Hello hungry people and welcome to Snack Situation. This is the show where Matt Wilson, that's me. And Marlene Thompson, that's me. We eat snacks and review them.
00:00:51
Speaker
Although, what we're talking about this time... Can I tell you about a snack I just ate? that you bought on the trip we're going be talking about? yeah Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Like right now? Yeah. Well, why don't you, know okay.
00:01:03
Speaker
Okay. I thought there was, i thought you're going to be like, no, wait. No, I'm saying go. I, okay yes. And well, yeah. ah

Pacific Northwest Adventures

00:01:10
Speaker
Okay. That's cute. So yeah we went to the Pacific Northwest where weed is legal and i ate half a real gummy.
00:01:20
Speaker
Yeah, we went to a shop in Seattle called, you remember what it was called? No. It was fancy, I thought.
00:01:32
Speaker
Yeah. You know why it was fancy? Because it was easy to buy. walked in, we walked out in what, 10 minutes? Yeah, yeah, yeah. But like, I mean, like.
00:01:45
Speaker
Compared to some of the other places we saw that were selling weed gummies and stuff, it seemed like upscale. Yeah, it seemed a lot ah it seemed legit.
00:01:57
Speaker
It was expensive. but It wasn't that expensive. What they had was pretty good. yeah ah Yeah, those were some like cherry gummies that actually taste okay.
00:02:11
Speaker
Compared to a lot of the stuff you can buy at... like Gas stations. CBD, or not CBD, but like the places that sell the... Delta 9 whatever. That stuff around here. Everything tastes like ash.
00:02:25
Speaker
Everything tastes like ass. And that too. Anyway, yes, this episode is about us and our trip to the Pacific Northwest. We went to Seattle and Portland. i tabled at, you can hear our, you can maybe hear our cat in the litter box right now, which is just a fact of life and you should live with it. I mean, it's a snack within itself.
00:02:47
Speaker
gross you're welcome i went to rose city comic-con and was there for three days uh tabling um so it was kind of a business trip and also because we were recording this podcast all of this food we're going to be talking about was part of the the business trip as well um in seattle we oh we lost a day in seattle because of well a canceled flight oh And like, here's the thing. First world problems, right?
00:03:16
Speaker
But I hate flying and I only had one Xanax. So I had to like split it between the trip. And this sounds like I like just take drugs all the time. i don't, but I, I mean, well, here's thing. I'm medicated.
00:03:31
Speaker
medicated. And like, who cares? But yeah, flying gives me intense anxiety and it's a panic disorder. It gives me a panic disorder. So that's anyway. don't have to fucking explain myself to you or anyone else.
00:03:46
Speaker
Anyway, so yeah, the flight gets canceled. And I'm like freaking out because they put us back on a flight that had not one stop. But what was it? Three stops. It was a three leg flight. yeah Yeah, it was a three leg flight and it was an overnight flight. yeah flight so oh yeah yeah So our original flight.
00:04:06
Speaker
was from Asheville to Dallas to Seattle. And the part... So I guess there was really bad weather in Dallas or something to that effect.
00:04:19
Speaker
And i our flight to Dallas got canceled, and then the flight from Dallas to Seattle also got canceled. So even if we had been able to get to Dallas, we'd have been stuck there. yeah um So we kind of got lucky in that regard.
00:04:32
Speaker
But our cat is going nuts. Eleanor. um She's getting more nuts and louder over time. you You're going to hear her more than you hear Harrison pretty soon.
00:04:43
Speaker
it's funny. But anyway, so that got canceled and it was just they were just like, we're going to rebook the flight. So we... Waited and got the rebooked flight, which went from Asheville to Miami.
00:04:57
Speaker
Stayed in Miami overnight. Then flew to Orlando. With no hotel. They didn't book as a hotel. No. The hotel would have been the like Panera Bread. with is At the airport. At the airport. Yeah.
00:05:09
Speaker
um then that Then the flight was to Orlando. Then it was from Orlando to Seattle. And rightly, Marlene was like, no, we're not doing that. Fuck yeah. I was like, we are driving to the airport.
00:05:21
Speaker
We are going to that front desk, and you're going to figure it out. And I did. What we got was a rebooked flight from Charlotte to Seattle, a direct flight, which meant we had to figure out a way to seatietle to Charlotte because we couldn't drive our car and park it because our flight back was to Asheville.
00:05:40
Speaker
So ah we got a Lyft ride that was $200. Wow. That's that story. So anyway, well no, wait, can I say one thing is that the Lyft driver was very nice.
00:05:51
Speaker
Uh, she was a woman. Um, she was like a petite woman who, uh, didn't talk the whole way, drove very, uh, mildly and well. And I literally, when I got in, I was like, hi, I'm Marley. And she went, okay.
00:06:06
Speaker
i'm pretty sure she was Italian. Uh, but she didn't talk the whole way. She was very nice. She stopped so I could pee. And she was like, okay, you go. Yeah. get um I don't know why I'm explaining this story, but anyway, yeah, that's what happened.
00:06:19
Speaker
We made it to Seattle is really the point.

Exploring Seattle's Cultural Spots

00:06:21
Speaker
We did. Our hotel was right downtown. ah We rented a car, and the are the the parking at this hotel was in like a lot across the street, not in a parking garage. As far as I can tell, Seattle doesn't really have parking garages.
00:06:38
Speaker
I don't think Seattle... has much of parking. Portland was full of parking garages. Yeah, that was fine. Seattle didn't seem to have any. so But anyway, we we parked in this like lot, and I was worried about the car the whole time we were there.
00:06:54
Speaker
We went to the Museum of Pop Culture, which was very fun, very cool. We saw some cool stuff. We saw Picard in Season 1, Star Trek The Next Generation uniform. We saw Geordi's visor. Yep.
00:07:08
Speaker
yep Oh, and we also saw Picard as the Borg. Like his Borg stuff. Like some of the Borg stuff he wore, yeah. yeah A lot of good Star Trek stuff at the Museum of Pop Culture.
00:07:20
Speaker
That same day, we also went to Pike's Place Market. um All I really ate there was... Well, no. Okay, so we went to this place called... What was it called? Hunters. It had like a... Hiroshki-Piroshki. Hiroshki-Piroshki, And they've sold... They had meat pockets. What was referred to as meat pockets. And I got the salmon. Like, it was like a salmon and chive. Like, it was so fucking good.
00:07:47
Speaker
It was like smoked salmon in this puff pastry with like... cream cheese and chives and it hot was hot as fuck it was so good and then then tried it i tried it i did not like it as much as you i loved it and i ate so much fish um and then i they were selling a you know that they have you've ever been it's just a market and they sell like fish stuff like that and they were selling uh raw scallops and i was like you better believe i'm getting one of those
00:08:18
Speaker
ah And it was maybe my favorite bite of the whole trip was a raw fucking scallop with some wasabi on it. And it was so good. Fresh. Fresh.
00:08:30
Speaker
It was amazing. The thing that I ate at Pike's Place. Well, also at Piroski Piroski, we got like a um cinnamon cardamom.
00:08:41
Speaker
Oh, yeah. That was really good, too. It was pretty good. I did. I didn't like it as much as I wanted to. liked it. would rather have rather it had just been a cinnamon bun.
00:08:53
Speaker
It was spice in a way I didn't i didn't love. but um I liked it. The quality of the food there was very good. I also got some um chicken skewers at a food truck, which were perfectly fine.
00:09:05
Speaker
Yeah, they were just fine. Perfectly fine chicken skewers. So that was our like one full day in Seattle, more or less. And then. The next day, we did the thing that we had planned to do for Snack Situation. to The pilgrimage.
00:09:20
Speaker
Which was make a pilgrimage. We drove. Well, first we drove to Snoqualmie, Washington. Snoqualmie Falls, which is beautiful, which is the waterfall from the opening credits of Twin Peaks. Yeah. Which it looks exactly like it.
00:09:37
Speaker
the hotel that. Was the Great Northern on the show. still there. still right there. um It's awesome and great. Yeah. then I will say that i I teared up a little bit.
00:09:48
Speaker
Then we went to the town of North Bend, which is very nearby, and made made our pilgrimage to what on Twin Peaks is called the Double R Diner.
00:10:01
Speaker
ah In reality, it's called Tweed's. weeds Tweed's. Tweed's Diner. But it used to be called Thompson's. Yes, that's right. um Which I think is pretty cool.
00:10:11
Speaker
Now, this place is very interesting. Ooh, I loved it. Now, first of all, the diner was used as a location, like, was actually a shooting location in Twin Peaks The Return. I went back and watched some scenes from Twin Peaks The Return.
00:10:30
Speaker
That is the diner. Like, that that is that diner on Twin Peaks The Return. Oh, what about the original one? I'm fairly sure that in the original Twin Peaks, that was a set.
00:10:42
Speaker
The double R was a set. But they used the actual diner. But they used the actual diner in Twin Peaks The Return. um Okay. Well... The set doesnt is bigger than that actual diner is.
00:10:54
Speaker
But in Twin Peaks The Return, it's definitely the diner. But in Twin Peaks The Return, it is modeled after that diner. Oh, and no it is They used the location. they they They shot there, from what I can tell. No, no. I'm sorry. I meant...
00:11:07
Speaker
Twin Peaks, the original. Twin Peaks, the original series. It's modeled after it, but it's different. um Also, the diner inside looks exactly like the diner in the video game, Alan Wake, um which is basically ah love letter to Twin Peaks already anyway. but Well, we had some. I had a really good tuna melt.
00:11:26
Speaker
Well, let let me let let me get before we get to the food, I want to talk about the experience of going there. This is a snack podcast. but But we're leading up to the food. Okay.
00:11:37
Speaker
So you get there. It's in this tiny little town. Like, North Bend is tiny. It is tiny. It's like a little mountain town. It's cute. It is cute, I will say. Like, we have a lot of little mountain towns around us here. Yeah, it almost reminded me a little bit of, like, Black Mountain or something.
00:11:53
Speaker
But the the the mountains there are way bigger than the mountains here. They're cool. They are cool. Um, we, we, you could, see you could see a ramp Mount Rainier on the drive from Seattle to Portland. It was really awesome. And I like when we got to Seattle or like even just driving in the like mountains of Washington, which is a beautiful, like literally probably the prettiest state I've ever seen, uh, or I've ever been to. uh,
00:12:20
Speaker
was like, I didn't want to be that person, but i was like, trees, trees, look at these trees, look at these motherfucking trees. Uh, so the, the, we, we got there to the diner and we, there was a line already.
00:12:38
Speaker
This was at like 1130 AM. <unk> There was a line already for, to get a seat and, We were told the wait was going to be like 35 to 40 minutes.
00:12:50
Speaker
But it was a thing where it was just like, we'll text you when the table is ready. and Yeah, clearly people people go there. like It's a staple in the the town, but also I think people like make a travel make it a travel destination because of Twin Peaks. So we said fine.
00:13:06
Speaker
We walked around. we We got a look at the stuff in in the town and and had a nice time.
00:13:15
Speaker
There are two kinds of people that go to Tweed's Diner. There are people who, like us, who are fans of Twin Peaks. You can kind of tell who they are.
00:13:27
Speaker
And they're there for that. And they're there to have that experience. Then there are the people who just happen to be in the town of North Bend on that day who just want to eat lunch somewhere.
00:13:38
Speaker
yeah Who are like, there's a diner where I can eat lunch. And they walk in and they're told that it's a 40-minute wait for a table. And they go, what? To a person. And we saw multiple people do that. Yeah.
00:13:49
Speaker
Or, you know, maybe they were just really impatient people. Maybe. Who, like, knew what it was, but they were like, I want my cherry pie now. Well, okay, so you got a tuna melt, which you liked. I got a burger that was a perfectly good... The fries were good, too.
00:14:06
Speaker
Diner burger. I thought the fries... Yeah, the fries were, like, excellent. They were, like, hand-cut fries. Yeah. Then we did the thing that you gotta do and The double R. Just get coffee. which we You had a cup of coffee.
00:14:21
Speaker
um but we And I will say that like diner coffee, usually i don't I don't put sugar in my coffee. I'm just a cream oat milk gal. But ah usually, if i if the coffee is like shitty at a diner, I'll usually get coffee, but i'll have to put sugar in it. This did not have to.
00:14:37
Speaker
That was a damn fine cup of coffee. I didn't get it. Black is midnight on Moonless Night, but... It was still pretty fucking good. Okay. So then we got a a piece of cherry pie with some some ice cream on top, which was just like... You mean a la mode?
00:14:54
Speaker
A la mode. Which was just like, you know, out of the machine soft serve, vanilla soft serve. But the pie was quite good.
00:15:06
Speaker
Yeah. People were... And i you didn't you read reviews and you said that like the po people were like, pie's not good. It was good. People on our Discord... On the War Rocket Ajax Discord.
00:15:17
Speaker
Mm-hmm. We're saying, oh, we gotta warn Matt that the pie at Tweeds is bad. Well, here's the thing. I know this is probably... Look, I'm, like, removed from this, from the Discord.
00:15:30
Speaker
But ah y'all are wrong. Well, here's the thing. A lot of those... The articles that got linked are from... 10... 8 to 10 years ago. Mm.
00:15:43
Speaker
ah
00:15:45
Speaker
My guess is that something has changed. they They've saddled up. In the time since. I don't know if it was a thing where they felt like they didn't have to be good right as Twin Peaks The Return was airing.
00:15:59
Speaker
but her Or like right before, or maybe Twin Peaks The Return got them to change because more people started going there. Or something. But clearly something changed. Because there's a photo in one of those articles. I can't remember...
00:16:14
Speaker
where the articles were, but there was a photo in one of those articles of the pie and it looked totally different. ah Like, I wouldn't say this pie was like life changing or anything, but it was good.
00:16:27
Speaker
It was good. I mean, it was a solid diner pie. Yeah. and like the mix of coffee and cherry pie a la mode really like not something that I would normally like typically get.
00:16:42
Speaker
Um, Because I'm not like usually a cherry pie person. But fuck, it's good. Yeah, it was tasty. Yeah. Just the combo of it. like the I couldn't say for sure if the cherry filling was like out of a can. I mean, who cares?
00:17:01
Speaker
It probably was. but the The pie crust was like well-made. um the The pie that was in the the article... I think it was up from like 2014.
00:17:13
Speaker
So it's been a long time. It's been a while. And they've clearly changed it since then. But the pie that they showed was like covered in like sugar crystals. Which was not what all the pie we got was like at all.
00:17:25
Speaker
Well, it was really good. it It was, it you know, we were very hungry. Maybe it was just the the experience of being there in the diner whatever. um but But to me, the pie was...
00:17:38
Speaker
And then we drove, I thought it was a shorter drive, but yeah, it's like three hours to Two a half. Yeah, to Portland. And that was really,
00:17:49
Speaker
Beautiful.

Discovering Portland's Culinary Scene

00:17:50
Speaker
Beautiful. Beautiful. um And yeah, turns out I really love Portland. so Yeah, our first stop in Portland was, you went to a thrift store or a resale store.
00:18:04
Speaker
I went to Powell's Books. Powell's Books was was great. Mm-hmm. And then I met you in Pal's Books. yeah i I will say that my little my little excursion of ah going to thrift store right beforehand, um I was like, I'm just going to take a gummy and see what happens.
00:18:19
Speaker
And um my purchases were very much inspired by ah that choice. So
00:18:29
Speaker
I got home and I was like, we'll make it work. Or back to the hotel room. Our hotel in Portland was very nice. Shout out to them. Hotel Lucia. yeah they were Yeah, it was a really nice hotel. Which is right downtown, more or less.
00:18:43
Speaker
um ah An easy walk to Powell's. They had a 5 p.m. happy hour every day where you could get a free beer or seltzer or root beer, I think, was the other option.
00:18:56
Speaker
um They had some free-to-play pinball machines downstairs, which was only it was only like two, but they were free-to-play. And the room was really great. Really nice.
00:19:09
Speaker
was really nice. Small bathroom, but otherwise nice. Let's see. what What food do we want to talk about in Portland?
00:19:20
Speaker
we went to We were recommended. we were Okay, we were told not to go to Voodoo Donuts, which we didn't do. No. Instead, we were recommended to go to a place not far from the convention center called Delicious Donuts. It was so good.
00:19:36
Speaker
They were very straightforward, just straight-up donuts. And the people that ran it were so nice. They were incredibly nice.
00:19:47
Speaker
there But there was just nothing like fancy or frilly about donuts. No, it was like donuts. But they were good donuts. They were good. They were colorful and and clearly like fun. It wasn't just like straightforward. Here's your old-fashioned. Go.
00:20:02
Speaker
but Yeah, yeah, yeah. if if like is It's a nice place. But like um what I mean is like, I don't know. There's a thing now where it feels like donuts have to like donut shops have to do something special or gourmet or whatever.
00:20:19
Speaker
Yeah. And that's not what they do there. They just make good, solid donuts. And like I just got like a regular glazed, which is like, look, I love a regular glazed donut.
00:20:34
Speaker
And it was real good. Oh, you're saying you're like a plain thing? Yeah. but it's not plain, but it is. It's got ah a lovely flavor.
00:20:47
Speaker
Yeah. not saying it's not a lovely flavor, but saying that it's like top tier. Look, I mean, you're talking to somebody who likes an old fashioned donut. I will say it is delicious. Yeah. But I got like a maple old fashioned donut and, um, like, uh, I call them Homer Simpson donuts, but like a strawberry donut with sprinkles on it. Yeah.
00:21:07
Speaker
yeah I ordered the Homer, the Homer donut, which was very tasty. Yeah. Um, Oh, and I also got a bagel. And then what did I do that day while you were at the convention center? Oh, I i think you went I did a lot. I went to Forest Park, park yeah which was really cool, and just to, like, go and be in nature, and don't know if you guys are fans of Twilight, but... It was very Twilight-y. very Twilight-y. And... ah Didn't see any sparkling vampires, but did see a huge ass slug. And I was like, i don't want to touch that. um But it was like a slug on steroids. Like you don't know the kind of um creatures or vegetation that grows in a place until you like go visit it. And like we live in a, in a rainforest climate here on the East coast and there, apparently the climate is very temperate, but the forest is just like so rich and green. And you mean and on the West coast, it's a rainforest climate.
00:22:05
Speaker
No, here. okay. um and oh And, you know, it's a temperate โ€“ it is a temperate climate in Portland. Yeah. They don't get a lot of โ€“ we get more snow than they do, which is like โ€“ Oh, yeah. you wouldn't think. But, yeah, just different.
00:22:20
Speaker
And then I'm trying to think what I โ€“ I don't think โ€“ it was one of those days where I was, like, walking everywhere, and then I went back to the hotel for a nap, and i was like, I didn't eat anything except that donut. Yeah. And that bagel. So then what did we do that night for food? Well, before we get to that, I do want to say that day while I was at the convention, a listener named Derek, shout out to Derek, brought me brought me donuts from a place called Doe Donuts.
00:22:50
Speaker
like the Like a female deer. D-O-E. Yeah. ah More donuts on that same day. um and those donuts were vegan. They were vegan and delicious.
00:23:01
Speaker
um ah little yeah Maybe they should have been called delicious donuts. Hey. um You could tell, I could tell, that they were a little different. um But they were quite quite good. But you didn't know they were vegan until somebody told you.
00:23:17
Speaker
I didn't. um I could tell that, but I could tell there was a slight taste difference. Like they were missing, like, I guess what they're missing is egg. Flavor. No, there was flavor. Like, the the the glazed... Sorry, vegans. I'm not trying... I like vegan food. I'm not trying to... I mean, I am kind trying to be a dick, but it's fine.
00:23:38
Speaker
Derek brought, like, a chocolate frosted, ah strawberry frosted, and then, like, a glazed that was, like, a vanilla bean glaze thing.
00:23:49
Speaker
oh And the the vanilla bean glaze was, like... Really tasty. Yeah. That is also the day I went and tried.
00:24:00
Speaker
but Actually, I went on two different days. I went and tried Burgerville, which is the local Portland fast food chain that um says that all of their ingredients are locally sourced.
00:24:16
Speaker
ah And the first day I went there, I just got like a regular burger combo. with fries. The fries were quite, were good.
00:24:27
Speaker
I, they were like better than regular fast food fries. The burger was just kind of like slightly better McDonald's. ah I was kind of amazed by how much it reminded me of McDonald's, the burger. That's so weird.
00:24:44
Speaker
Um, the second day I went there for lunch because it was the only real place in walking distance of the convention center that I could get to. um And I didn't want to eat the food in the convention center, which was mad expensive.
00:24:59
Speaker
That's a little gross, though.
00:25:02
Speaker
I got like chicken tenders, which were also fine. But I got a milkshake. And the milkshake was great. um The milkshake was top shelf.
00:25:15
Speaker
Good stuff. So if I can recommend recommend anything from Burgerville, it's ah just a chocolate shake. um like You could tell that it wasn't just like some goo that came out of a machine like some milkshakes are. Fast food milkshakes.
00:25:32
Speaker
cause It had clearly been mixed. but You could tell and looking at it. um so Oh, we went to a... um so's Just some other things for a Roundup. We went to this place called Broder, which is a Nordic breakfast.
00:25:45
Speaker
That was good. That was really, really tasty. um They had pancake balls. They had pancake balls. It was real good. um We went to another place called EEM, I guess, but it's um ah like Thai barbecue. Really good.
00:26:00
Speaker
Saw some friends. And then we went to another place called Oma's Hideaway, which is like Singaporean Malaysian food and cocktails. It was real good. um For pizza, we did pizza skulls.
00:26:12
Speaker
Is it a pizza skulls? I'm not exactly sure how to say it, but i will say that I have the little, uh, I have the Irish or the Scottish guy as the direction person. He's Irish.
00:26:23
Speaker
Okay. And, uh, he, uh, we put it in the rental car and it drove us and it was like a piss of skulls. And I was like, that's feels like you're mocking.
00:26:35
Speaker
Yes. It was really funny. Anyway. Um, what else did we do? Oh, we went to, pizza was very good. It was really, really good. It was one of like three different pizza meals we had in Portland, just because but pizza is everywhere. Pizza is everywhere. In Portland, especially.
00:26:55
Speaker
In Portland. The dream of pizza is everywhere in Portland. We went to breweries. We went to Grand Notion, which was really good. They had pizza there. Also had good pizza. I went to Grand Fur, which is a womanowned ah woman brewer, um like women uh, run brewery and, um, had a really, really good burger there.
00:27:16
Speaker
And then I went across the street and I honestly don't remember what, That wine bar was that I went to, but it was really good. And then we got pie at this place called Loretta Jeans.
00:27:27
Speaker
Yes. And that shit was out of this world. That was my favorite food on the whole trip. It was right. Pie at Loretta Jeans. Mine was the ribs at Oma's Hideaway. The ribs at Oma's Hideaway were also really good.
00:27:41
Speaker
um But... And the ribs at Eam, we got ribs at Eam also. They were very tasty. um But Loretta Jeans.
00:27:52
Speaker
Okay, so we go there. it's this beautiful It's this beautiful little pie shop on Hawthorne?
00:28:02
Speaker
No, it's not on Hawthorne. It's on Division. So we ah you get, like it's like a strawberry. I was a very intent on getting...
00:28:14

like a French silk or chocolate cream pie, but they didn't have any. I got like a strawberry short... They don't they didn't call it a strawberry shortcake. It was like its a strawberry short think it strawberry short pie. um But I just realized that. I was like, why is it just called strawberry short... I'm stupid. Okay.
00:28:29
Speaker
um It's fine. Yeah, so I got a strawberry shortcake pie. And it was goddamn good. It was tasty. I had a bite of it. It was good. But you got this... I got...
00:28:42
Speaker
A slice of chocolate chess pie, all a mode. Oh, my fucking God. It was like biting into what I assume, what anybody assumes heaven would be.
00:28:54
Speaker
Yeah. I think chess pie. That bite was like heaven. i think It was like God came down and blessed himself. I think chess pie in general is underrated.
00:29:06
Speaker
and Well, most of it is just chocolate. It's a chocolate pie. You can chess pies of all different kinds of flavors. Oh, well, the chocolate one is probably going to be the best one. the chocolate But that chocolate chess pie was... Great....really incredible. Yeah. um like Sort of had the flavor of a brownie, but like was clearly texturally pie.
00:29:27
Speaker
for And I want it again right now. Oh, and we also went to a place called ah Ranch Pizza... ah Because we went to the other brewery that we went to was Balearic?
00:29:43
Speaker
Balearic? Yeah, that sounds, it's probably close to that. That's the brewery and pizza place that was nearby Books with Pictures, which is where the convention after party was. Yeah, and they have, ah in that pizza place, they have a a pizza called ran is called Ranch Pizza.
00:30:02
Speaker
It's Detroit-style pizza. um And they give you a side of ranch with it. And honestly, look. I'm on East Coast through and through. Fucking Philly, New York style pizza all the way. Fold it.
00:30:15
Speaker
Eat it. That slice should not cost more than $1.75. But I'll tell you what. Detroit style pizza, you dip that sucker in some ranch. Some ranch.
00:30:26
Speaker
Some ranch. for And it's good. It's.
00:30:35
Speaker
great
00:30:38
Speaker
While we're listing off... I was like, we're just going to whisper the whole rest of the time. This is a ASMR podcast. You're going to listen to us dip pizza crust into ranch dressing, and we're going to eat it.
00:30:53
Speaker
you want to hear our cat clean it yourself? No, no, no. Don't do that.
00:30:59
Speaker
they was like She's been on the podcast enough already. No, she deserves to be on it more. She should be a host. the While we're mentioning places we ate in Portland, ah we should also... admit i forget i actually forget the name of it, but we went to like this little taqueria on the first night within walking distance of our hotel.
00:31:21
Speaker
Yeah, was pretty good. and It was pretty good. I would say Portland acquitted itself fairly well. for some like corner on the corner Mexican food.
00:31:35
Speaker
um Although they did not have queso. They had something called cheese. Like it was like chips and cheese. Yeah. But he was like, it's not like queso. He was like, it it's not queso. You know, if you want queso, don't get it. And I was like, okay. um Yeah. I walked away like,
00:31:56
Speaker
you know i think Seattle and Portland have the same kind of problem as far as a downtown area, which is um that the same thing with l LA. It's a really like heartbreaking houseless population. yeah and um yeah the the downtowns, I will say, if you've never been and are planning to go, they are just prepare yourself. It's it's sad. um However,
00:32:25
Speaker
the And we can talk about, look, you know my views on fucking gentrification and how we are such gentrifiers anyway. This is a snack podcast.
00:32:39
Speaker
Please cut this out cut this part out, Matt. Why? I don't think you say anything bad. Well, I don't think, I just don't think I'm being very eloquent saying it. No, I think you're right to point it out. ah it's it's It's a reality. I mean, it's it's true here in Asheville, too, but.
00:32:55
Speaker
Like, we can talk about all this really good food that we had. It was still um just kind of, like, overly, like, it yeah, it hit me in the face pretty hard. Yeah. um One last thing before we wrap up, and this I'm pivoting back to something frivolous after a serious topic.

Regional Soda Observations

00:33:14
Speaker
um So I went to the Pacific Northwest. I'd been there one once before. um You went to Seattle, right? In Seattle. But I really didn't get to go much of anywhere then, because ah that was for Emerald City Comic Con. And you went to...
00:33:31
Speaker
What did you say? Capitol Hill? That was the yes which neighborhood. we we Chris and i Chris Sims and I tried to go to a burger place called Dick's Drive-In.
00:33:42
Speaker
And we were told that we couldn't get a burger without mustard on it. I was then told... Did you tell him? Did you tell him? Did you tell him? You don't know Dick! Did you tell him that?
00:33:54
Speaker
i'm sure they would You don't know Dick! I'm sure they would really change their mind. They should. Hey, you you don't give me a burger with mustard on it or without mustard. Hey, you're a fucking Dick!
00:34:07
Speaker
um I was told after the fact that in the years since we went to Emerald City, Dick's Drive-In now offers just a plain burger, like a plain cheeseburger. And so we could have just put one there. They found out, they fucked around and found Dick!
00:34:22
Speaker
so Anyway, i didn't I don't think I investigated this when I was in Seattle before. i just like went to a bunch of coffee places and got coffee. And by the way, um the coffee up there is really good. Oh, is it
00:34:40
Speaker
Okay.
00:34:42
Speaker
No, it is really good. But what I wanted to investigate was I wanted to go to the Pacific Northwest and try whatever their local soda was.
00:34:55
Speaker
Because i had to I assumed that every part of the country has a local soda. Yep, ours was Kutstown. You have, like, yeah, like in in Philly, you have, like, local root beers and birch beers and stuff like that. in this part of the world, Philadelphia,
00:35:13
Speaker
North Carolina specifically. This part world! In this part of the country. in in i will say we are recording this kind of late, so our brains aren't working. In the Carolinas specifically, but the broader south, there's a lot of um regional sodas.
00:35:29
Speaker
Right here you can get Cheerwine and Sundrop and some other stuff. If you go to like Kentucky, Ohio, you're going to get ALA 1 and... and Which I just assume tastes like steak sauce.
00:35:44
Speaker
And big red when you get to the Midwest. and And Texas. And and like squirt is in the Midwest home and all of that.
00:35:56
Speaker
And I'm like, I i can't wait to to get to the Pacific Northwest and try their local soda that tastes like... Their the version of squirt. That tastes like boysenberry or whatever, right? And there's nothing.
00:36:08
Speaker
They have nothing. Well, they might, but maybe we just missed it. I went to multiple stores. I went to supermarkets. I went... When did you do this? I didn't go. Anytime you were shopping at some resale store or um I was just walking. like There were some mornings where I would just like go walk around town.
00:36:28
Speaker
I would go into like a bodega. I would go into the Safeway. I would go into like stores and I would look for the like local soda. like Anything that like seemed to be a local soda.
00:36:41
Speaker
Nothing. Ugh. I saw like a lot of kombucha. I saw a lot of like those like probiotic sodas, but I don't think those were local. So what I'm saying is, listen on it listeners in the Pacific Northwest.
00:36:56
Speaker
Get your squirt on. Get your squirt on and and invent a local soda for the Pacific Northwest. because there is and Call it squirt too. There a void that can be filled with And you can be the one to do it.
00:37:12
Speaker
aha We're counting on you, squirts. We're counting on you to make this happen. Don't let me down, squirts. like Pick a flavor that is like indicative of it's quite that region. is great Lingonberry or something.
00:37:29
Speaker
And make a delicious soda that then becomes like the soda of that region. Squirt. Because... I'm sorry. Because I think every region of the United States needs to have... Squirt.
00:37:44
Speaker
A regional soda that it can identify as their own. I identify as a squirter. Oh my god.
00:37:58
Speaker
