Introduction and Recent Activities
00:00:06
Speaker
Thanks for tuning in to the Loser Kid Pinball Podcast.
00:00:09
Speaker
We are on episode 23.
00:00:11
Speaker
With me, as always, my co-captain... Scott Larson.
00:00:15
Speaker
How have you been doing, my good sir?
00:00:17
Speaker
You know, it's been pretty busy, actually.
00:00:19
Speaker
I worked a lot last week.
00:00:20
Speaker
A lot of people had vacations, so I spent a lot of time at work.
00:00:24
Speaker
And now I am trying to recover, but I'm also going on a work trip tomorrow, so...
00:00:31
Speaker
That's very nice of your coworkers.
00:00:34
Speaker
Well, it is what it is.
00:00:37
Speaker
My business is open 24-7, so you always have to have coverage.
00:00:43
Speaker
Well, no, but you told me you were telling me this, though, last time it's it's the end of the year.
00:00:47
Speaker
So everyone's deductibles have pretty much been met.
00:00:49
Speaker
So everyone it's a free for all for like surgeries and stuff.
00:00:52
Speaker
So, yeah, a little bit.
00:00:54
Speaker
It's everybody's trying to to get in.
00:00:57
Speaker
I really get it from the from the patient standpoint.
00:01:00
Speaker
It just makes our job very busy this time of year.
00:01:04
Speaker
So what what about you?
00:01:05
Speaker
Anything anything new going and going on in Josh's life?
Thanksgiving Pinball Tales
00:01:10
Speaker
Um, we had Thanksgiving.
00:01:12
Speaker
Um, it was delightful.
00:01:14
Speaker
Uh, we hosted it at my house or our farmhouse.
00:01:17
Speaker
I know I call it my house, but anyhow, um, and you know, right before it was time to cut the Turkey, we're still waiting for people to show up.
00:01:26
Speaker
And so, you know what I decided to do?
00:01:28
Speaker
My attitude is, Hey, we're starting at three o'clock, cutting it and starting at three o'clock.
00:01:33
Speaker
See, I guess I'm a little more generous than that.
00:01:35
Speaker
I decided, Hey, I'm a cold hearted guy.
00:01:40
Speaker
I'm like, we're going to start a round of attack from Mars.
00:01:42
Speaker
So I started and my wife comes down and she's like, everyone's now here.
00:01:49
Speaker
We got to get this going.
00:01:49
Speaker
I'm like, I am just, I'm two seconds away from rule the universe.
00:01:53
Speaker
Just I've never been this close before.
00:01:55
Speaker
Please just give me just two minutes.
00:01:57
Speaker
I ended up obtaining it.
00:02:00
Speaker
I was like, holy crap.
00:02:03
Speaker
Everyone standing there kind of watched me and it was pretty intense having an audience.
00:02:07
Speaker
I was able to finally rule the universe.
00:02:09
Speaker
And so did they let a sparkler in your honor?
00:02:13
Speaker
They did not, but I got some pretty gnarly high fives.
00:02:15
Speaker
I was pretty proud of myself.
00:02:18
Speaker
So what's your next?
00:02:19
Speaker
What's your next goal?
00:02:22
Speaker
I want to get back to it again.
00:02:24
Speaker
Just it's ruled the universe.
00:02:26
Speaker
I thought it was kind of like, I don't know if you ever played World Cup soccer.
00:02:31
Speaker
I'm trying to think of a lot of the wizard modes are pretty much just like a multi-ball with endless shooting, which that's this case, but you actually have to obtain like 2 billion points to actually rule the universe.
00:02:48
Speaker
You don't have an unlimited ball save.
00:02:50
Speaker
It gives you a pretty generous one, but it's like spoiler alerts.
00:02:54
Speaker
I hope no one out there is like upset that I'm talking about this.
00:02:57
Speaker
You can fast forward 30 minutes if you don't want to hear about this.
00:03:02
Speaker
So, but I didn't, I didn't realize that it took, you had to get so many points.
00:03:07
Speaker
So it was really stressful when I was down to one ball, trying not to drain and get those last couple, uh, a hundred million points.
00:03:15
Speaker
And I was able to pull it off.
00:03:16
Speaker
It was pretty, it was pretty awesome.
00:03:18
Speaker
I'm ready to do it again.
00:03:21
Speaker
Well, and that's the, uh, that's the defining characteristic of a game, right?
00:03:25
Speaker
Is when you get to that thing or that whatever, then you want to do it again.
00:03:33
Speaker
And it was, it was awesome.
00:03:35
Speaker
Um, and then shortly thereafter, wait, the week before that, I don't know why my timelines messed up, but, uh, I was on head to head.
Guest Appearance on Head to Head Podcast
00:03:44
Speaker
So Martin randomly, uh, we were talking and a couple of days before the show and he tells me, Hey, by the way, Joe, isn't going to be here.
00:03:54
Speaker
Uh, I need someone to fill in.
00:03:55
Speaker
Will you just jump on with me?
00:03:57
Speaker
When, when do you want to do it?
00:03:58
Speaker
And he's like tomorrow.
00:04:03
Speaker
So we were on Wednesday because he'd asked me right before we started recording with Teolis.
00:04:06
Speaker
And I was like, sure.
00:04:08
Speaker
And then, yeah, we record with Teolis.
00:04:11
Speaker
And then I went on there with him.
00:04:14
Speaker
So, yeah, no, he's always fun to record with.
00:04:17
Speaker
That's the that's the main challenge with head to head right now with Joe being a.
00:04:22
Speaker
a highly ranked tournament player.
00:04:25
Speaker
He's going to be occupied most weekends going to these competitions.
00:04:29
Speaker
And so it is a little challenging to have a sustained podcast when you are recording on the weekends.
00:04:37
Speaker
Obviously, the competition is Joe's, it's his main focus.
00:04:42
Speaker
So I totally support him and going in and competing in these tournaments.
00:04:46
Speaker
But yeah, it does make it a little more challenging to continue to have the weekly format.
00:04:53
Speaker
It was, I don't know.
00:04:55
Speaker
It's kind of like being on our show.
00:04:58
Speaker
I'm going to tell you behind the scenes really quick about head to head.
00:05:01
Speaker
Martin is fantastic with his notes.
00:05:03
Speaker
Like, I don't know if you remember this, Scott, when we were on in March, but his notes are immaculate.
00:05:09
Speaker
He sends you like a page or two pages of notes and they're all like, I don't know, bullet point.
00:05:15
Speaker
Like they make ours look amazing.
00:05:18
Speaker
Well, well, he, he does a lot of research and he actually types up an agenda.
00:05:23
Speaker
And so, yes, it's, it's a lot more organized.
00:05:26
Speaker
We have a little more free flow approach to our podcast, but yeah.
00:05:31
Speaker
And, and Marty's hilarious.
00:05:33
Speaker
I wish I had his laugh.
00:05:34
Speaker
I wish I had his enthusiasm because it is very contagious.
00:05:38
Speaker
And so when you're with him, it certainly is a lot of fun.
00:05:40
Speaker
So yeah, I'm glad you had that chance.
00:05:42
Speaker
Well, and the nice part is too, is, is it's just highlights
Pinball Podcast Diversity and Passion
00:05:45
Speaker
It's not necessarily like in depth.
00:05:47
Speaker
It's just like, here's the headline, and then it's off the cuff from there.
00:05:51
Speaker
But still, it's amazing how much stuff.
00:05:55
Speaker
Well, he puts a lot of planning into it.
00:05:57
Speaker
And, man, I don't know how he does it every week.
00:05:59
Speaker
It is very impressive.
00:06:02
Speaker
I take my hat off to those guys that do the weekly.
00:06:08
Speaker
Look at This Week in Pinball and the stuff they do.
00:06:11
Speaker
And granted, Jeff Patterson feeds a lot to the podcast, but still,
00:06:16
Speaker
There's a lot that goes into that podcast.
00:06:18
Speaker
And I mean, even look at our friends over at poor man's podcast or poor man's pinball podcast.
00:06:23
Speaker
They do it twice a week.
00:06:24
Speaker
They do like their regular show in the middle of the week and then they do a, an effort Friday and they just, it's crazy.
00:06:31
Speaker
And I just, it blows my mind.
00:06:34
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:06:36
Speaker
Well, it really shows how even though this is amateur hour, we're all doing this for fun and very few of us are really making any money off this.
00:06:48
Speaker
It really shows that there's a lot of effort behind the scenes even to maintain something as fun as a podcast that we do.
00:06:55
Speaker
And there are people who do it even more.
00:06:57
Speaker
And you look at Special One Lit and all the stuff they do.
00:07:00
Speaker
And every single podcast, I can't name all the podcasts out there because there's so many of them.
00:07:06
Speaker
But really, people take it seriously and they put a lot of time and effort into something that's basically a side hobby.
00:07:13
Speaker
A side hobby from their normal hobby, which is pinball.
00:07:17
Speaker
Well, and, you know, I was listening to the Pinball Profile today with Jeff Teolis and he had Lauren Gray on who does the Backbox Pinball Podcast.
00:07:29
Speaker
And just like her, man, you can, her podcast oozes passion.
00:07:34
Speaker
And the reason she did it is because she wanted to hear more female competitors and female influences in the hobby.
00:07:40
Speaker
And that is great to me that I love when people shine different lights in the hobby.
00:07:45
Speaker
Cause there is a ton of people in this hobby that deserve to get a light shine on them.
00:07:51
Speaker
Um, the nice thing about the way that these podcasts are organically growing is that, um, it,
00:08:00
Speaker
There is always a risk in broadening the spectrum and increasing the diversity that in order to raise someone's voice, people tend to decrease or silence a majority voice or other ones to make room.
00:08:16
Speaker
The good news is that
00:08:18
Speaker
There doesn't seem to be a limit to how many seats are at the table.
00:08:21
Speaker
And so we don't have to pull seats at the table away in order to make room.
00:08:26
Speaker
The bottom line is the table is big enough for everybody.
00:08:28
Speaker
And so I love that there's all these different people who are coming to the table and really speaking out and showing the diversity in pinball because there's
00:08:38
Speaker
Again, I've said it many times before, that's what drew me to pinball is that it's this egalitarian, everybody is welcome, and we all have a common interest regardless of our diverse backgrounds.
00:08:53
Speaker
And like I said, there's a lot of unsung heroes in this hobby that definitely need some praises.
00:08:58
Speaker
I know a lot of people aren't doing this to get praise.
00:09:01
Speaker
But it's nice when people put a lot of effort in and you give them a slap on the back every once in a while.
00:09:07
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:09:09
Speaker
So there's a lot of people that earned it.
00:09:12
Speaker
I guess that pretty much wraps up my last week and your last week or last two weeks unless you got anything else for me.
00:09:17
Speaker
No, I think it's ready to sign off.
00:09:19
Speaker
Tune in to us next week.
00:09:22
Speaker
Yeah, our 10-minute podcast now.
00:09:26
Speaker
What do you want to talk about first?
00:09:27
Speaker
Well, let's move on to some news.
00:09:28
Speaker
Let's talk about what just got released.
00:09:30
Speaker
We're recording Wednesday evening, and there were some news released just a couple of hours ago.
00:09:37
Speaker
You want to talk about this?
00:09:39
Speaker
You know, go ahead.
00:09:40
Speaker
I want you to explore this and let's talk about it together.
00:09:44
Speaker
I found out because someone announced it.
00:09:48
Speaker
I was watching the Dead Flip stream and someone announced, hey, Spooky Pinball just announced Rick and Morty is their next game.
Rick and Morty Pinball Announcement
00:09:56
Speaker
And I'm like, that can't be right.
00:09:59
Speaker
And so I went on to, onto Twitter and I looked it up and sure enough, spooky has announced that Rick and Morty is our next game with the trailer teaser attached to the tweet.
00:10:11
Speaker
Um, a couple of things really quick.
00:10:14
Speaker
I thought it was very interesting that they released it like 10 minutes before closing.
00:10:22
Speaker
I guess I don't know if they're taking pre-orders right now, but they did mention in the video, there's going to be 750 of them.
00:10:29
Speaker
Um, but I thought, I thought that was interesting.
00:10:30
Speaker
Like, why don't you do at the beginning of the day?
00:10:35
Speaker
Hey, it's their company.
00:10:37
Speaker
They can do what they want.
00:10:38
Speaker
And we've been hearing Rick and Morty for a while.
00:10:40
Speaker
I don't fully get the theme.
00:10:42
Speaker
I honestly tried to watch it last night again.
00:10:45
Speaker
And I guess I'm just not like the family guy, American dad, Rick and Morty kind of guy.
00:10:51
Speaker
Like it just means too much.
00:10:54
Speaker
What are your thoughts, Scott?
00:10:57
Speaker
You know, it's it works really well with what Spooky is trying to do.
00:11:04
Speaker
I'm going to lump in a little bit of Adult Swim, or excuse me, Rick and Morty with all the Adult Swim shows.
00:11:11
Speaker
So if you look at all of them, they're all these niche shows, and in many ways, they're...
00:11:18
Speaker
they're making fun of, uh, of the cartoons that we grew up with.
00:11:24
Speaker
And so if you look at the cartoons like, you know, Johnny quest or Scooby-Doo or all these type of cartoons, if you look at the adult swim content, okay, now the, now the cartoons have grown up a little bit.
00:11:39
Speaker
They have, uh, certainly a more, um,
00:11:46
Speaker
There's certainly a lot of stuff that would be considered on the blue side, but they are, if you look at them all together, they all have something to offer.
00:11:57
Speaker
And they're all quite funny.
00:12:00
Speaker
One of the adult swim shows that I've seen a lot of is called venture brothers, which is basically a, a take on Johnny quest, which I thought was amazing growing up.
00:12:10
Speaker
But you watch it now and you find it hilarious.
00:12:14
Speaker
I've never been a huge Family Guy fan just because it seems that the humor is just a little too on the edge for me.
00:12:25
Speaker
But when I watch it, I certainly appreciate the density of jokes, how many jokes they're doing and how they set them up.
00:12:32
Speaker
And there's a lot of really funny stuff in there.
00:12:35
Speaker
So I totally understand why this would work well for pinball.
00:12:41
Speaker
I think it is a perfect option for a small company like spooky to take on.
00:12:48
Speaker
Also, if you have the Rick and Morty, it's, it's a little bit more of a scientist.
00:12:54
Speaker
So you can go with the spooky vibe.
00:12:58
Speaker
And it certainly is a license that can't have been that expensive.
00:13:02
Speaker
But there's enough fans out there that I think it will make actually a great option for it.
00:13:10
Speaker
It's along the lines of Simpsons and Futurama.
00:13:14
Speaker
Well, and I look at it this way.
00:13:15
Speaker
Honestly, I think it is a brilliant move for Spooky.
00:13:19
Speaker
I think 750 units...
00:13:23
Speaker
I guarantee by the end of tomorrow, well, I can't guarantee, I apologize.
00:13:26
Speaker
I would be shocked if by the end of the weekend that they weren't all sold out.
00:13:32
Speaker
People have been begging for this theme.
00:13:35
Speaker
This is, like I said, I watched it.
00:13:38
Speaker
I might need to give it just a little bit more.
00:13:39
Speaker
Like I said, I've only watched the first episode a couple times.
00:13:43
Speaker
And I think, may I need to give a little bit more of a chance, but...
00:13:47
Speaker
People love, love the show.
00:13:49
Speaker
I just, I think it's one of those games.
00:13:52
Speaker
Honestly, if it goes into your home and your friends come over and they see Rick and Morty, that's the first one they go to.
00:13:59
Speaker
Now, I agree that there's been a lot of talk about this.
00:14:03
Speaker
Do you think that there's 750 talk about this?
00:14:07
Speaker
Like people who are willing to put their money down for 750 of them.
00:14:11
Speaker
Really, it's a pretty niche title.
00:14:14
Speaker
And in pinball, we have talked at length that theme really does sell.
00:14:21
Speaker
And if you look at, let's just assume that there's 10,000 pinball machines made in a year and...
00:14:27
Speaker
Really, Stern has 80%, 85% of those pins.
00:14:32
Speaker
Do you really think that close to 10% of the market is going to want a Rick and Morty?
00:14:39
Speaker
I think there's people that have been salivating for this theme that just โ it's one of those ones.
00:14:45
Speaker
I think first off, a lot of people, if it doesn't sell out quickly, it's because they want to see the play field.
00:14:52
Speaker
I guess I can't write it off just yet as a solid win, but I think the theme goes a long way with this title.
00:15:01
Speaker
And if it's Scott DeNisi's next game, which I mean, what are we like, 95% for sure this is it?
00:15:06
Speaker
Because why would you announce something before Scott DeNisi's game that would come out after Scott DeNisi's game?
00:15:14
Speaker
then if it's got Scott Denise's charm mixed with this theme, I think it's a no brainer.
00:15:19
Speaker
I think 750 units, if priced right, go out the door with no problem.
00:15:27
Speaker
I think it will be, I think it'll still take about three weeks to really sell out.
00:15:36
Speaker
Still, three weeks is impressive, in my opinion.
00:15:41
Speaker
I don't think it's going to be a fly-off-the-shelf situation.
00:15:46
Speaker
The bottom line is this is a niche title.
00:15:48
Speaker
Yes, it's a theme.
00:15:50
Speaker
It's a known entity.
00:15:54
Speaker
It's a little bit like Primus where there are some really hardcore fans out there.
00:16:01
Speaker
And beyond that, are you going to get more?
00:16:04
Speaker
Admittedly, I was surprised that Iron Maiden sold as well as it did.
00:16:08
Speaker
I'm an Iron Maiden fan.
00:16:09
Speaker
I plan on having an Iron Maiden fan or a pin at some point in my house.
00:16:15
Speaker
Maybe when my kids are a little older.
00:16:17
Speaker
But I was a little surprised.
00:16:20
Speaker
Keith made an amazing game, an amazing shooter, and an amazing rule set.
00:16:23
Speaker
And so that certainly helped sell the game.
00:16:28
Speaker
But on theme alone, I don't know how much I'm jumping in on theme alone.
00:16:32
Speaker
Because there are some themes that I have liked the theme, but the flow of the game or just the interaction of the game, I decided I wasn't much of a fan of.
00:16:47
Speaker
So, I was, well, I grew up with Star Wars and I was planning on, everybody said that it was going to be a Star Wars pin coming out and I was planning on getting in on it.
00:17:00
Speaker
I actually had a down payment on an LE.
00:17:03
Speaker
And when it came out and I saw the playing of it and the flow of the game, I thought, you know, maybe this just isn't the way I would envision a Star Wars pen.
00:17:15
Speaker
Now, that's not saying it's a bad pen.
00:17:17
Speaker
What it's saying is that it didn't connect with me on a theme that I liked.
00:17:22
Speaker
I would say the same thing with a Rick and Morty theme that it still, uh, theme is good because it obviously starts entering you into that storyline, but you still have to like the way the game flows.
00:17:35
Speaker
Now his first game was great, but, uh, you know, let's, let's check out and see what his next game is going to be.
00:17:42
Speaker
Well, and I, I apologize.
Rick and Morty Pinball Speculation and Comparisons
00:17:44
Speaker
I cannot remember the podcast that was talking about this, but there was, uh,
00:17:47
Speaker
and maybe it was Jack Danger, but they were talking about how people have already been in there to play Scott Denise's game.
00:17:53
Speaker
They're loving it.
00:17:54
Speaker
There's new mechs in there that haven't necessarily been utilized this way before or seen this way.
00:18:01
Speaker
There's a lot of innovation in it.
00:18:03
Speaker
And granted, people can say what they want until we see the product.
00:18:09
Speaker
This is what we have to go off of.
00:18:11
Speaker
But I think there's a lot of content.
00:18:13
Speaker
Like I said, I've watched one episode of Rick and Morty.
00:18:17
Speaker
There's a pickle Rick.
00:18:18
Speaker
There's the me seek, the blue guys that, that there's a ton of them that for some odd reason, Rick wants Szechuan sauce.
00:18:26
Speaker
He wants McDonald's to bring it back.
00:18:28
Speaker
I mean, I've never seen the show in its entirety or past one episode, and I can name a handful of moments from that show.
00:18:38
Speaker
And that's just me.
00:18:39
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:18:39
Speaker
Like I just, there's a lot of memes.
00:18:42
Speaker
There's a lot of love for this, this title.
00:18:45
Speaker
I guess it depends where it lands age wise.
00:18:48
Speaker
Um, a lot of people I know that love Rick and Morty are younger age, like, um, mid twenties, uh, late twenties.
00:18:59
Speaker
I don't know what your, your demographic is.
00:19:01
Speaker
I would assume it's more of, uh, the people in their forties, um, when you're selling pinball machines.
00:19:09
Speaker
Well, when you're selling them, yes, but when you're playing them on location, you probably do want those things that are more relevant.
00:19:21
Speaker
I'm 45, but I guarantee that me looking at the Grammy nominations, I have no clue who any of these artists are.
00:19:30
Speaker
And that's just, that's just saying that I'm, you know, I have locked into that demographic of the 45 year old who buys eighties nostalgia themes.
00:19:40
Speaker
And if you want to broaden that beyond me, then you probably going to want to try some of these other themes.
00:19:49
Speaker
how many 20 something year olds are going to be interested in teenage mutantage turtles?
00:19:55
Speaker
Maybe, maybe not, but it's the same thing as Ghostbusters.
00:19:59
Speaker
Maybe I, Ghostbusters really, that was one of those major movies of the eighties that we grew up on.
00:20:05
Speaker
We saw it when we were, you know, teenagers or, or younger.
00:20:10
Speaker
And you're going to have to do the same thing to not let the, the 40 year old demographic demographic of pinball just die.
00:20:21
Speaker
Yeah, I just, from a standpoint right now, looking from the outside in, I think Spooky has a win on their hands regardless.
00:20:31
Speaker
I don't see them having a hard time selling these units.
00:20:37
Speaker
I really think there's a, there's a high demand.
00:20:40
Speaker
It's Rick and Morty and me is kind of in the same realm as Archer.
00:20:44
Speaker
I think it's that same kind of humor.
00:20:46
Speaker
And there's a lot of demand for Archer.
00:20:47
Speaker
Like I think people, when they got their hands on the Archer layout, uh, when Keith was taken around to the pinball shows, that's what kind of sold Iron Maiden.
00:20:56
Speaker
And so I don't know, man, I think it's a win.
00:20:58
Speaker
I think it's a home run regardless.
00:21:01
Speaker
It certainly is not a miss.
00:21:03
Speaker
There are some themes when people announce and you say, why?
00:21:08
Speaker
Why would you do that theme?
00:21:10
Speaker
When they announce rumored themes, some of them I think, yeah, I could totally see that.
00:21:14
Speaker
Others I think, why would you ever consider that?
00:21:17
Speaker
I totally see why they're doing this one.
00:21:20
Speaker
And it certainly has a lot of potential.
00:21:23
Speaker
Well, and honestly, we're going to have to see what 2020 holds.
00:21:27
Speaker
But if you were to take the, if you were to take theme Rick and Morty up against the other games that were released this year.
00:21:34
Speaker
So Martin, I did this on, on head to head.
00:21:37
Speaker
Um, so I know you're not a huge Rick and Morty fan, nor am I, but Rick and Morty versus monsters.
00:21:43
Speaker
What do you think wins there?
00:21:46
Speaker
I think it's different demographics.
00:21:50
Speaker
I don't see anybody really under 50 buying a Munsters.
00:21:55
Speaker
I remember the Munsters, but they were already in syndicated reruns when I was a kid.
00:22:01
Speaker
So when I saw Munsters, I thought, okay, I think Munsters is a fun shooting game.
00:22:08
Speaker
And if they end up doing a rule set that channels Iron Man, I think Munsters could have that second renaissance.
00:22:20
Speaker
But yeah, I'm in the donut hole of this one.
00:22:25
Speaker
I'm not really in the Munsters or the Rick and Morty demographic.
00:22:30
Speaker
You're like, I'll take the Jurassic park instead.
00:22:35
Speaker
And that is my, that is my wheelhouse.
00:22:37
Speaker
That's a, you know, early nineties.
00:22:41
Speaker
So here's my thing.
00:22:42
Speaker
I, like I said, I'm not a huge fan of Rick and Morty.
00:22:45
Speaker
I can see the humor being there.
00:22:46
Speaker
I can see him being made like a Simpsons pinball party.
00:22:49
Speaker
It could be really, really fun.
00:22:54
Speaker
I guess it all comes down to layout and whatnot.
00:22:57
Speaker
But what other were you comparing?
00:22:59
Speaker
What other were you, were you comparing all the different pins?
00:23:02
Speaker
I don't want to side rail.
00:23:06
Speaker
So I think Rick and Morty for me would win over Munsters.
00:23:09
Speaker
It would win over black night.
00:23:12
Speaker
It would win over a star Wars vault and the star Wars, the home pin.
00:23:22
Speaker
Until we see it, I can't really.
00:23:24
Speaker
It's Scott Denise.
00:23:26
Speaker
It's his sophomore attempt.
00:23:27
Speaker
So I want him to knock it out of the park.
00:23:32
Speaker
Scott Denise did it.
00:23:34
Speaker
He's up next to bat.
00:23:35
Speaker
And I can't wait to see what Eric has too.
00:23:37
Speaker
I'm rooting for these guys because I want these guys.
00:23:40
Speaker
The better their product is, the better it is for the hobby.
00:23:43
Speaker
And it pushes pinball forward.
00:23:45
Speaker
And I hope the best for all of them.
00:23:48
Speaker
It also depends on how they integrate the theme because just the theme alone is great to get you in the door.
00:23:57
Speaker
My friend had the LE Star Wars, and he sold it after a while because the quotes were repetitive.
00:24:08
Speaker
And so there wasn't the variation of call-outs.
00:24:11
Speaker
And so every time he felt that there were parts of the movie that he loved, but that were so repetitive by the call-outs, he decided to sell the game because he didn't want to get sick of those parts of the movie that he loved.
00:24:26
Speaker
So now I also understand Star Wars has three movies.
00:24:30
Speaker
That's all the quotes you get.
00:24:32
Speaker
Rick and Morty, you have an endless array of them.
00:24:35
Speaker
And if you get the voice actor to actually do the call outs like they did on Simpsons Pinball Party, then you can avoid those things.
00:24:43
Speaker
There's also a risk of having that clip, the video run montage that's
00:24:49
Speaker
That, you know, Guardians of the Galaxy suffered a little bit from.
00:24:52
Speaker
Monsters suffered a lot.
00:24:54
Speaker
I mean, how many times you're going to watch Grandpa walk over to the library book?
00:25:00
Speaker
So having that video asset, you need to find a creative way of still mixing it up.
00:25:07
Speaker
With Jurassic Park, that's one thing that's really great about the way they did it is that you're in the Jurassic Park world, but you're not just watching clip after clip.
00:25:16
Speaker
Well, that's that's one of the thing you bring up that I think is awesome.
00:25:19
Speaker
I'm hoping this is after watching the teaser trailer, they had the voices of Rick and Morty bantering back and forth on the video.
00:25:28
Speaker
And it was custom because they're talking about they're getting their own pinball machine.
00:25:33
Speaker
And so that's so great.
00:25:36
Speaker
If you can actually get that, that is so great because that's one of the major things that makes Simpsons Pinball Party great.
00:25:43
Speaker
There are still call outs that I hear in that game that I've never heard.
00:25:47
Speaker
I don't know about you, man, but I'm excited, ecstatic that I picked this Texas Pinball Festival go to.
00:25:54
Speaker
We've now got Rick and Morty.
00:25:56
Speaker
American Pinball just said game number three is going to be at TPF.
00:25:59
Speaker
We got Deep Root with at least... At least one game.
00:26:06
Speaker
And Stern's got to have one game out before then.
00:26:10
Speaker
So we could potentially see four new games for March, maybe even five.
00:26:17
Speaker
Well, I I'm, I'm excited too, because I'm going on as well.
00:26:21
Speaker
I'm not necessarily holding my breath because last Texas pinball festival was, um, I would say a little bit of a letdown because we had a lot of potential releases to the end of getting pushed back, but certainly the way it's looking right now, I'm buying my ticket.
00:26:37
Speaker
I've already bought mine.
00:26:38
Speaker
I've bought my flights.
00:26:39
Speaker
I've bought my, uh,
00:26:41
Speaker
My TPF tickets, they did a Black Friday sale.
00:26:45
Speaker
Yeah, they had like a 20 bucks off or something like that.
00:26:50
Speaker
But I got my weekend pass.
00:26:55
Speaker
Did you get us some press passes?
00:27:00
Speaker
So I talked to Robert about that and I guess they're going to explain the requirements in January.
00:27:08
Speaker
So I not requirements like they're going to put it out there for people that do want to go.
00:27:14
Speaker
But you'll have to meet a certain criteria, I think.
00:27:19
Speaker
So speaking of that limited edition Star Wars that your friend had that he got rid of.
00:27:26
Speaker
What do you think of all this hubbub about the Star Wars topper that finally released two years later after this game came out?
00:27:33
Speaker
Yeah, you know, I feel bad for Stern.
00:27:36
Speaker
I truly do, because this is a casualty of working with a major license.
00:27:46
Speaker
It took so long to get this thing out that how many games have we had since Star Wars?
00:27:55
Speaker
Steve Ritchie has already released another game that has a better topper with Black Knight.
00:28:03
Speaker
And so, yeah, it seems when you buy a game, typically you want to buy all the cool stuff at once.
00:28:13
Speaker
But Star Wars is how many releases back?
00:28:17
Speaker
It's four releases back or five releases back.
00:28:20
Speaker
And now you have this topper that...
00:28:26
Speaker
It feels a little bit like the, um, the Ghostbusters topper where I'm sure it's cool and I'm sure it integrates and I'm sure it tells things, but it's not really a topper that I would be that interested in.
00:28:40
Speaker
And considering the price is a little high.
00:28:43
Speaker
So if you're, if you're really into star Wars and you're really into the toppers, um, um,
00:28:50
Speaker
I, I would have been interested in something a little different.
00:28:54
Speaker
I, I appreciate that they did R2D2.
00:28:59
Speaker
I just wish he did a little bit more than have a light show and just spun a little bit.
00:29:04
Speaker
And that seems a little, that seems a little steep for $750.
00:29:09
Speaker
What do you think?
00:29:09
Speaker
If you had a star Wars pin, would you buy this?
Star Wars and Beatles Pinball Analysis
00:29:13
Speaker
If I had a star Wars pin, I,
00:29:16
Speaker
Honestly, I don't know.
00:29:18
Speaker
I mean, that price tag is pretty steep.
00:29:20
Speaker
You could buy almost a meteor for that price.
00:29:22
Speaker
I mean, here's the thing that bothers me.
00:29:26
Speaker
And it has nothing to do with the price because I don't own a Star Wars.
00:29:29
Speaker
I don't look to own a Star Wars.
00:29:33
Speaker
It's that word limited edition.
00:29:34
Speaker
I feel like the Princess Bride.
00:29:37
Speaker
You keep saying that word, and I don't think you know what that word means.
00:29:42
Speaker
Do you really think they would sell 750 of these anyway?
00:29:46
Speaker
Because I actually don't.
00:29:48
Speaker
They've only got 500.
00:29:49
Speaker
They've only got 500.
00:29:51
Speaker
Okay, well, I don't even think they'll sell 500 at that price.
00:29:54
Speaker
It just seems a little steep, and that we've moved on.
00:30:01
Speaker
The pinball attention window is so narrow that, okay, yes, they were able to resurrect some interest in the pin by having that retro comic book art package.
00:30:15
Speaker
So I can understand, okay, so they jazzed it up, they did a new art package, and they also have this topper that you could get.
00:30:27
Speaker
Maybe they'll sell all 500.
00:30:29
Speaker
And I really hope they do.
00:30:32
Speaker
I hope that it's a success.
00:30:34
Speaker
It seems that the timing, again, through no fault of their own, we all know that this was a hang-up with the licensor.
00:30:44
Speaker
Then I just don't see them making that many of them.
00:30:51
Speaker
But I also think...
00:30:53
Speaker
it's a different situation in yes, it's just a topper, but we're not talking like Beatles prices.
00:31:00
Speaker
I'm not talking like a Beatles topper, but like my, my point being is I don't see this having a rough time selling.
00:31:09
Speaker
If we're selling ridiculous amount or like the ghostbusters topper and the kiss topper for a ridiculous amount of money,
00:31:17
Speaker
I don't see this one being an issue per se.
00:31:22
Speaker
I think the issue is like when you have like the Beatles that only had
00:31:25
Speaker
a limited number of 1964 altogether, but the price was so high on them.
00:31:32
Speaker
People just couldn't just, they, people looking from the outside and didn't, couldn't justify the price for what's on the play field.
00:31:39
Speaker
And it's, it's a good game.
00:31:41
Speaker
Like there's nothing wrong with that.
00:31:43
Speaker
It's a great game, but are you going to, um, I, I would say that most people would look at that game and feel, um,
00:31:50
Speaker
Rightly or wrongly, they will feel that it's about a $5,800 game as opposed to $7,800 game.
00:31:59
Speaker
And they feel that it's a pro type game for a premium price.
00:32:05
Speaker
Now, whether or not that's justified, I'm not sure.
00:32:07
Speaker
We all know drop targets are expensive and they are full of those in that game and you are paying a premium price for the license.
00:32:15
Speaker
So just like a car, if you're willing to have the total package available,
00:32:20
Speaker
of the redesigned play field, which is superior to Sea Witch, and having that art package and having the theme integration, then sure, it's worth that.
00:32:30
Speaker
But you are paying a premium for it, just like Star Wars.
00:32:34
Speaker
Well, and in the case of Beatles, this is what I was going to say is distributors still have these.
00:32:40
Speaker
I know a couple of distributors you could call right now and buy Beatles.
00:32:43
Speaker
And if there's only 1,964 of these bad boys, then the price...
00:32:51
Speaker
isn't justifying the pin in my opinion.
00:32:53
Speaker
Stern knows how to do this a lot better than I do.
00:32:57
Speaker
They've been doing this a lot longer, but I feel like looking from the outside in, I've said that three or four times already, but I,
00:33:04
Speaker
It feels like we're trying to probe the market and see where we can kind of rest prices at.
00:33:12
Speaker
The last couple of years have been crazy between Supreme, which flew out the door, and no one thought it was going to sell any of them.
00:33:22
Speaker
Now, I don't think that's true.
00:33:24
Speaker
I think that people didn't think that pinball players would buy Supreme.
00:33:30
Speaker
Sorry, let me rephrase that.
00:33:32
Speaker
Yeah, but Supreme is a brand, and so they sold the name.
00:33:37
Speaker
And with Beatles, you know, this is one of those where...
00:33:42
Speaker
you are completely right, trying to find that where's the market.
00:33:45
Speaker
Because if you're selling something for $500 and you're making $100 on it, well, okay, so if you sold it for $450 and you sold more of them, so what's your profit on each pin versus the total amount you're selling?
00:34:04
Speaker
Is that going to be...
00:34:07
Speaker
Is that going to make up for what you do?
00:34:08
Speaker
I look at how many thousands of Metallica pins they made and the profit margin.
00:34:16
Speaker
They, I guarantee they made way more on Metallica than they did on Beatles, even though they probably were making more per machine on Beatles, but just look at the volume of Metallica's that moved out the door.
00:34:28
Speaker
You're going to make a whole lot more money on Metallica.
00:34:33
Speaker
I think that I'm not sure if there were cost constraints because going through Kapow, if it was more of a vanity project where we're doing a limited amount.
00:34:45
Speaker
And so maybe we can get more because of the limited nature of it.
00:34:51
Speaker
I wish there were more of them out there, but I agree with you.
00:34:55
Speaker
I think the market analysis was priced a little high for Beatles.
00:35:01
Speaker
Well, and this goes back to my point.
00:35:03
Speaker
Do you think that they had such a hit with Supreme?
00:35:05
Speaker
They're like, well, Supreme flew out the door.
00:35:07
Speaker
If we do a Beatles, everyone knows the Beatles.
00:35:10
Speaker
They love the Beatles.
00:35:12
Speaker
We won't have any issue selling this many.
00:35:16
Speaker
I just don't know.
00:35:18
Speaker
Yeah, Joe Kamikawa has been in the market for so long, then you're not going to hit a home run every time.
00:35:26
Speaker
And you're always going to try.
00:35:29
Speaker
I would say Beatles is probably a double.
00:35:32
Speaker
It's a great game and it's a great theme.
00:35:34
Speaker
And I find it very fun.
00:35:36
Speaker
I would love to have a Beatles downstairs.
00:35:39
Speaker
But I also, when I look at the price, I think, well, would I rather have Beatles or would I rather have something else?
00:35:46
Speaker
I think we've exhausted that one.
00:35:48
Speaker
I know that the topper discussion has been quite on fire on Pinside.
00:35:54
Speaker
And on all the other podcasts too.
00:35:56
Speaker
I felt like we had a little different take on it.
00:35:59
Speaker
Now, I really do like the topper and the licensed mods and these ways.
00:36:07
Speaker
Car companies have been doing this for years.
00:36:10
Speaker
Do you want the standard car?
00:36:11
Speaker
Or do you want the car with the purple foil on it?
00:36:15
Speaker
Or do you want the blinged out tires?
00:36:19
Speaker
if there's any way of capturing some of the market because we know all these mods have been going on anyway so why not get some actually licensed mods now as we know though the challenge when you have a topper from Star Wars
00:36:35
Speaker
Well, Lucasfilm is going to get their cut.
00:36:37
Speaker
And so that's going to be limited.
00:36:39
Speaker
You know, a lot of those toppers out there really are, are, are project, you know, they're, they're homebrew.
00:36:46
Speaker
And so they're not paying the licensing fee, whether or not they should, you know, they probably should, but.
00:36:52
Speaker
they're not paying it.
00:36:53
Speaker
And so every cool topper out there that is not sold through official avenues, add $200 to that because I guarantee I have a nice Simpsons pinball party topper downstairs that probably would have been $200 more if Fox got their cut of the Simpsons license.
00:37:17
Speaker
I just want to fire these off really quick.
00:37:20
Speaker
Franchi, congratulations along with Ed Van Der Veen and Dr. Pin for you guys' first episode of the Super Awesome Pinball Show.
00:37:27
Speaker
They want us to know it's not a podcast.
00:37:30
Speaker
And the quality does shine through.
00:37:34
Speaker
I wonder how they're going to be churning those out, if it's going to be a once a week thing.
00:37:38
Speaker
I didn't catch that.
00:37:40
Speaker
I only, I'm only halfway through the episode guys.
00:37:41
Speaker
I do apologize, but it was really good.
00:37:45
Speaker
Um, congratulations to Steve Bowden.
00:37:48
Speaker
That was awesome on slam tilt.
00:37:51
Speaker
You know, every time they come back, I'm just excited to hear one of their episodes.
00:37:55
Speaker
I'm glad to hear that they're doing great.
00:37:57
Speaker
And it was awesome to have Steven Bowden on there talking about, uh, the projects over at deep root with Raza and whatnot.
00:38:06
Speaker
Let's fire off this last thing, but I'm going to turn it over to Scott for this one.
Gene Cunningham and Big Bang Bar Revival
00:38:10
Speaker
So this is a melancholy habit trails to Gene Cunningham.
00:38:16
Speaker
If you have not read the write-up on the manufacturing of the Big Bang bar, you really need to go look at it.
00:38:26
Speaker
It's a fascinating piece.
00:38:28
Speaker
It's a journalist who actually got interested in
00:38:31
Speaker
in the manufacturing of Big Bang Bar after Capcom decided not to do it.
00:38:37
Speaker
And so it's the entire story of Gene buying Capcom, trying to resurrect this project pin that was never produced.
00:38:51
Speaker
The interesting thing about it is that at the end of his project, he actually went into debt to make these machines and he got them out to all these people who bought the machines, which is totally different than a lot of the people who got these machines.
00:39:09
Speaker
burned by other pre-order type models that we've seen in the last five years.
00:39:16
Speaker
This was one that he actually went through and he lost money on every single pin that he shipped out the door and it really affected his business.
00:39:25
Speaker
It's a fascinating story.
00:39:27
Speaker
I highly recommend looking at it.
00:39:29
Speaker
And it just gives a behind the scenes.
00:39:31
Speaker
Now, there's certainly the write-up was warts and all.
00:39:37
Speaker
And it talked about him as a man and his...
00:39:41
Speaker
the positive things about him and possibly the challenges of him and his interactions with people.
00:39:47
Speaker
But I totally recommend looking at it because, hey, you should know about it and a guarantee that Planetary Pinball is looking at making these things with Chicago Gaming Company and remaking Big Bang Bar.
00:40:02
Speaker
So it's just a fascinating period of pinball that you should be well aware of.
00:40:09
Speaker
I went back and read, read, reread the article.
00:40:12
Speaker
I'm going to link it in the show notes.
00:40:13
Speaker
It's called when pigs flew the story of, uh, Gene Cunningham and big bang bar.
00:40:19
Speaker
If I remember correctly, I know it starts out when pigs flew.
00:40:22
Speaker
Fantastic article.
00:40:24
Speaker
And it's interesting the depth this journalist went through because he couldn't get a hold of Gene Cunningham via email, via phone, anything like that.
00:40:34
Speaker
So he ended up flying out to Chicago and driving two hours north to get a hold of him on the hopes that he could even just run into the guy.
00:40:45
Speaker
It really is good.
00:40:46
Speaker
And I would dare say this is one of the reasons we saw a resurgence of pinball.
00:40:52
Speaker
Um, when this was all going down, it was in the mid two thousands.
00:40:56
Speaker
Um, this is one pinball was kind of a, it's low period.
00:41:00
Speaker
We weren't training out the fantastic games that we have nowadays.
00:41:04
Speaker
Um, and so Gene proved that you could make a game that not necessarily, um, he, he proved that you could make a game and, and still make the price tag be up around the $6,000 range.
00:41:21
Speaker
And people would want to buy it.
00:41:23
Speaker
And at that time, pinball machines were selling for $3,000, $3,500 at the door.
00:41:28
Speaker
So a lot of people thought it was crazy for even suggesting to buy a pin for double what it was worth.
00:41:33
Speaker
But they all sold.
00:41:35
Speaker
And he followed through.
00:41:36
Speaker
And it's an awesome story.
00:41:39
Speaker
He also ran into the challenge of...
00:41:42
Speaker
of being a boutique company and that one of the reasons why Stern can price their machines at the price they have is because it's a volume business.
00:41:54
Speaker
And so they may not make as much per game, but they're selling a lot of games.
00:41:58
Speaker
It's the Walmart model.
00:42:00
Speaker
It's the Amazon model.
00:42:01
Speaker
And whether or not you agree with it, they basically make their money in volume.
00:42:07
Speaker
And that was the challenge with him.
00:42:08
Speaker
It's pretty hard to make all that money back in the volume as Big Bang Bar.
00:42:13
Speaker
But it's sad to see you go, Gene.
00:42:15
Speaker
I really think you left a lasting impression on the hobby, even if people don't realize it or not.
00:42:20
Speaker
Moving on, let's talk some Twippies.
Community Engagement and Twippy Awards
00:42:23
Speaker
It is Twippy season.
00:42:24
Speaker
The pre-voting has begun.
00:42:27
Speaker
We have asked that if you are going to put people in categories,
00:42:31
Speaker
that you put us in your favorite podcast of the year and of rookie of the year.
00:42:36
Speaker
I really stress rookie of the year because I feel like we have a better chance at this than we do favorite podcast.
00:42:42
Speaker
So, well, yes, I, I, that's where if we have any shot, I would say rookie of the year.
00:42:48
Speaker
Hey, if you love us and you want us to vote for the favorite podcast, we will take the vote, but absolutely.
00:42:55
Speaker
And if not seriously, please go and submit whatever your passion is.
00:43:00
Speaker
And certainly find out, is it possible that Kaneda makes a three-time Twippy podcast of the year?
00:43:12
Speaker
It's basically a popularity contest.
00:43:13
Speaker
So whoever you like and whoever you love, and obviously whoever has the best hats, vote for them.
00:43:21
Speaker
Well, and here's the thing too is, so I don't know if you're watching dead flip, uh, tonight, but he's been joking.
00:43:28
Speaker
He should be in every category for the podcast or for the pinball stuff.
00:43:32
Speaker
Like the topper one, like he took a picture of himself on top of his break shot last night.
00:43:38
Speaker
I, I, I saw that picture and I was wondering what the context was.
00:43:42
Speaker
So he wants to be on every category.
00:43:44
Speaker
Well, I guess Jeff, our friend Jeff Patterson over at this week in pinball reached out to danger and
00:43:49
Speaker
And said, hey, buddy, you're getting so many votes in all the categories.
00:43:53
Speaker
We kind of need to back off for a second.
00:43:57
Speaker
It's pretty funny.
00:43:58
Speaker
But yes, absolutely.
00:44:00
Speaker
It's pretty funny.
00:44:02
Speaker
I can honestly see this happening with a couple different celebrities in the hobby that could get a lot of votes.
00:44:09
Speaker
Well, it's a popularity contest.
00:44:11
Speaker
It's the People's Choice Award.
00:44:12
Speaker
So there are obviously some mega โ there's pinball celebrities, pinball personalities that bring a lot of eyeballs to pinball.
00:44:24
Speaker
And I guarantee they're going to get the majority of the votes.
00:44:29
Speaker
So, you know, so what?
00:44:32
Speaker
So go ahead, have fun.
00:44:34
Speaker
It's not like they're making, they're making any money on it.
00:44:36
Speaker
It will be a fun show and it'll be fun to see who people vote for.
00:44:41
Speaker
And Hey, if you throw some votes our way, we appreciate it.
00:44:45
Speaker
Really appreciate it.
00:44:47
Speaker
I'm kind of at that point of, even if we just get nominated, I'll be pretty pleased as punch.
00:44:56
Speaker
I really don't expect to walk away with a twippy.
00:44:58
Speaker
And I know some people say, hey, it's just, it's really nothing.
00:45:02
Speaker
But in the hobby, it's really cool to-
00:45:05
Speaker
Yeah, it'd be cool to be recognized.
00:45:07
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:45:10
Speaker
So I wish the best of luck to the other people that are in all the other categories.
00:45:16
Speaker
I know that there's a lot of people asking for votes and it's just pre-voting.
00:45:22
Speaker
So we want to get in those categories and then we'll talk after the first of the year.
00:45:30
Speaker
But yeah, I'm pretty excited.
00:45:33
Speaker
A year ago, I was stoked for Head to Head and for Special Unlit and all those other guys and never even had a dream of being even considered for a Twippy.
00:45:49
Speaker
And now here we are a year later and we're in the talks of even just getting on the ballot where a year ago โ
00:45:56
Speaker
No one even know who we were.
00:45:58
Speaker
Well, a year ago, we didn't have a pinball podcast.
00:46:02
Speaker
It's all it takes, guys.
00:46:04
Speaker
Like, there you go.
00:46:05
Speaker
If you want to get involved somehow, you know, there's some on here that you could do, like your favorite IFPA players.
00:46:09
Speaker
So, yeah, exactly.
00:46:11
Speaker
So there's plenty of ways that you can get on this ballot.
00:46:15
Speaker
If you want a Twippy, don't let anyone stop you.
00:46:21
Speaker
So, Josh, we have one other thing that we are looking
Loser Kid Merchandise and Giveaways
00:46:25
Speaker
It is winter very strong here in Utah.
00:46:29
Speaker
And we know that the awesome Loser Kid Pinball podcast hats are not all weather options.
00:46:39
Speaker
And so, Josh, what do we have for our awesome fans this wintertime?
00:46:44
Speaker
So you got to give a little background.
00:46:48
Speaker
So, so the background is, um, uh, so Keith had mentioned about, uh, he posted something and I, I responded back and, and, uh, and someone mentioned, Hey, you guys just like Keith because of the hat.
00:47:03
Speaker
And he said, well, we're taking a break from the hat because it's more of a summer hat.
00:47:10
Speaker
So he said, you know, I said, well, yeah, I get it.
00:47:12
Speaker
It's a little cold here in Utah, too.
00:47:14
Speaker
And so he mentioned, he said, you need Loser Kid beanies.
00:47:18
Speaker
And so I said, challenge accepted.
00:47:20
Speaker
We are making Loser Kid beanies.
00:47:24
Speaker
We're going to have a few different options.
00:47:27
Speaker
We're going to have a few of the hipster cool ones that are close to the head.
00:47:32
Speaker
But we are doing a small run of love.
00:47:36
Speaker
limited edition and we truly mean limited edition in the true sense of the word old school stripes and pom-pom you know man and i think we're just going to a run of these we're not going to limit them so if someone wants on this train jump on the train but we're going to do it for a short amount of time because i don't see a reason for us to do beanies for a really long time okay it's not a limited edition it's a it's a small run it's a batch run so
00:48:04
Speaker
A small run of the new, they're the stripes and the pom poms.
00:48:08
Speaker
It's a limited edition in the JJP limited edition manner.
00:48:12
Speaker
We're limiting these to 10,000.
00:48:16
Speaker
We will not make more than 10,000 and they're not going to be.
00:48:20
Speaker
Until we decided we want to do them in blue and then we'll do another 10,000.
00:48:28
Speaker
I don't think they appreciate that.
00:48:31
Speaker
Hey, hey, it's all kidding.
00:48:33
Speaker
All in love, right?
00:48:34
Speaker
Hey, but yeah, we're just going to make these, you know, we're just having fun with these.
00:48:38
Speaker
And so if you're interested in a, in a hat, in a hat or a beanie or a beanie with a pom-pom,
00:48:48
Speaker
shoot Josh an email and we'll certainly get some sent out to you.
00:48:53
Speaker
Well, we'll have the samples in next week, if I remember correctly.
00:48:57
Speaker
I think they came in, the hats came in today.
00:49:00
Speaker
They're going to get them stitched.
00:49:01
Speaker
They should have them either by the end of the week or the beginning of next.
00:49:04
Speaker
As soon as we have them, we'll take some pictures.
00:49:06
Speaker
We'll put them up on the site, on Facebook and Pinside and in our Instagram.
00:49:10
Speaker
And if you want to get a hold of us on them, it's the usual Loser Kid Pinball Podcast at gmail.com.
00:49:16
Speaker
or just through Facebook.
00:49:17
Speaker
And we'll probably do them for a month or two.
00:49:21
Speaker
We'll probably even do them up to TPF.
00:49:24
Speaker
And so that way we can bring hats and beanies with us.
00:49:27
Speaker
If you don't want to pay the shipping cost, especially if you live in Canada or Australia or outside the States and you're coming to TPF, this would be a fantastic time.
00:49:36
Speaker
Please let us know if you want a hat because
00:49:39
Speaker
I want to get you guys one.
00:49:40
Speaker
I want to have enough for everyone that wants one down at TPF.
00:49:43
Speaker
And really, we, we really make nothing on the hats.
00:49:46
Speaker
So we're just doing this for fun.
00:49:47
Speaker
And we think that we, I do love every time I see pictures and I'm able to pick out a loser kid hat.
00:49:54
Speaker
So this is a lot of fun for us.
00:49:56
Speaker
So we, we hope you guys are having fun with it too.
00:49:59
Speaker
We should totally make like a wall of, of loser kid hat fame.
00:50:04
Speaker
Cause I think I've got a lot of the pictures.
00:50:07
Speaker
Yes, you should do that because there's no chance I'm ever going to find time to do that.
00:50:16
Speaker
And then one last thing.
00:50:17
Speaker
So did you listen to head to head?
00:50:21
Speaker
When I was on last week.
00:50:23
Speaker
So at the so at the end, we talked about, you know, we teamed up with Brad Hunter of Lit Frames and he's taking the five dollars off on top of the RE suite deal he has going on.
00:50:35
Speaker
But Brad also, I tease this on head to head.
00:50:39
Speaker
He wants to do a giveaway with us.
00:50:42
Speaker
And so Scott and Brad and I have been trying to figure out how to do this giveaway.
00:50:46
Speaker
I think we've landed on this.
00:50:48
Speaker
Should we, should we tell them first what it is?
00:50:50
Speaker
I think you should.
00:50:52
Speaker
So yeah, I actually, okay.
00:50:55
Speaker
I will preface this.
00:50:56
Speaker
I bought the, the limited edition.
00:51:01
Speaker
It's not translate.
00:51:02
Speaker
It's a, it's a, it's a back glass on plastic.
00:51:08
Speaker
Well, how would you call that?
00:51:10
Speaker
Anyway, so I have that and I have it framed and in one of Brad's frames.
00:51:15
Speaker
And it is really cool because you can cycle it.
00:51:19
Speaker
You can hit it on color cycle and it actually cycles through all the colors.
00:51:24
Speaker
And shockingly, different things jump out on it.
00:51:27
Speaker
I did not expect this.
00:51:29
Speaker
I thought it was going to be a little more of a...
00:51:32
Speaker
just a static frame, but with that color show, it is dynamic.
00:51:36
Speaker
And I love the monster bash, uh, translate that I have.
00:51:41
Speaker
It really is amazing.
00:51:43
Speaker
And so I love what he did.
00:51:45
Speaker
I actually went and I bought some from Brad and I have, uh, three different options now.
00:51:51
Speaker
Uh, so I can actually show different translates.
00:51:54
Speaker
So what does he have for this special giveaway, Josh?
00:51:59
Speaker
So for this special giveaway, uh,
00:52:01
Speaker
he did give us a truly limited edition product.
00:52:05
Speaker
He's not giving us one of his frames because that's what Martin was guessing last week.
00:52:09
Speaker
He's giving us a signed Christopher Franchi, Superman 78 translate.
00:52:17
Speaker
There's only 25 of these bad boys out there.
00:52:20
Speaker
And so he wants, he's doing as a holiday thing.
00:52:23
Speaker
He thinks, you know, we should all get in the holiday spirit and he wants someone to have a fantastic Christmas.
00:52:30
Speaker
So for the next two weeks,
00:52:32
Speaker
We're going to put up a post that will have the Superman translate on the post.
00:52:36
Speaker
It'll say probably like you can win me.
00:52:38
Speaker
Something like that will hammer out those details.
00:52:40
Speaker
But what we want you to do is to like the post, share the post, and to like our page.
00:52:48
Speaker
And we'll do that also on Facegram or Facegram.
00:52:51
Speaker
Facegram and InstaFace and the Twippies.
00:52:57
Speaker
So we're going to do it on Facebook and on Instagram.
00:53:01
Speaker
And you can do on both.
00:53:02
Speaker
Every time you click a like, every time you share, you get a, you get an entry into the giveaway.
00:53:10
Speaker
And so I know someone out there wants this.
00:53:14
Speaker
Like I said, we'll put a picture up of it.
00:53:16
Speaker
It's hard to see the signature because when they're lit up, I guess it's hard to see the signature.
00:53:21
Speaker
But we'll put a few posts up.
00:53:23
Speaker
So each post that you like and share will be an entry.
00:53:30
Speaker
It's impossible to multiple like the same posts.
00:53:32
Speaker
So that's why we will do multiple posts.
00:53:35
Speaker
But absolutely get the word out.
00:53:37
Speaker
We want to make sure everybody knows about these lit frames.
00:53:40
Speaker
Everybody knows about the options.
00:53:42
Speaker
And Josh and I aren't getting anything from this.
00:53:45
Speaker
We just want to promote awesome products in pinball.
00:53:48
Speaker
And this is a product that has blown my mind.
00:53:51
Speaker
So I'm excited to get out there.
00:53:55
Speaker
And I'd like to get one for myself too.
00:53:57
Speaker
I need to, I need to hit up the missus and say, Hey, you know what I want for Christmas is one of these lit frames.
00:54:05
Speaker
And so, yeah, we'll do that.
00:54:07
Speaker
And then if you're not on Facebook, if you're on Instagram, hit us up, we'll, we'll put you in for the drawing as well.
00:54:14
Speaker
And then in two weeks when we do our next recording, we will, we'll spin the wheel and we'll give out a Superman show.
00:54:23
Speaker
Um, I think this is for, uh, America only, but, uh, we can probably work with Brad if you're in Canada, if you're in Australia or whatnot.
00:54:33
Speaker
Um, I am pretty for sure.
00:54:34
Speaker
Brad's going to be at TPF.
00:54:36
Speaker
We can probably bring it with us there.
00:54:38
Speaker
Or if you're willing to pay for shipping, I mean, there's only 25 of these, like, I doubt we're going to hold back on if you want to take care of shipping, we will make sure you get it.
00:54:52
Speaker
Well, I think that pretty much wraps it up for everything we wanted to talk about.
00:54:56
Speaker
I'm looking forward to the end of the year, the end of the year wrap up.
00:55:01
Speaker
And do you have any bold predictions for the next end of the year?
00:55:06
Speaker
Josh, do you have any bold predictions for the next month?
00:55:09
Speaker
For the next month, Stranger Things gets revealed.
00:55:12
Speaker
Brian Eddy's the person doing it.
00:55:15
Speaker
And it rivals Jurassic Park for the year.
00:55:19
Speaker
My bold prediction is actually that they will not release it because I think Jurassic Park is selling so well that they are going to delay the release until they start winding down their production on Jurassic Park.
00:55:33
Speaker
You know, I could see it going either way.
00:55:36
Speaker
One quick thing before we leave.
00:55:37
Speaker
I want to, I didn't talk to Scott about this, so he's finding out right now.
Cactus Canyon Restoration Story
00:55:42
Speaker
I would like to showcase some of the stories in the hobby.
00:55:46
Speaker
There's some wonderful, cool stories out there.
00:55:50
Speaker
If you want to send us in one of your stories, we will read it out on air.
00:55:54
Speaker
We'll probably call it story time or something like that.
00:55:57
Speaker
But I would like to do a segment where we talk about the stories like and to preface this, the reason I'm bringing this up, we kind of talked about with this with Jeff Teolis, but I was at that tournament.
00:56:08
Speaker
It's been a month already, but I was sitting there and you don't see cactus canyons every day.
00:56:14
Speaker
And I had to ask the owner.
00:56:16
Speaker
where did you get a cactus Canyon?
00:56:18
Speaker
Cause he's been in it so long.
00:56:20
Speaker
He got it during the time that pinball machines were kind of fading away.
00:56:24
Speaker
And the gentleman's name is Artie or he said, well, it's a really interesting story.
00:56:30
Speaker
Um, I've, I've made friends with plenty of people in the hobby and I got a call one day and he said, I heard you want a cactus Canyon.
00:56:38
Speaker
Do you still want one?
00:56:39
Speaker
And Artie's like, yeah.
00:56:42
Speaker
So he's like, well, come down to the place.
00:56:44
Speaker
Here's the address.
00:56:45
Speaker
And we'll go take a look at it and see if you still want it.
00:56:47
Speaker
He's like, oh, I'll want it.
00:56:49
Speaker
And so they got down there.
00:56:51
Speaker
And he's like, there was still like smaller smoke coming off the building.
00:56:57
Speaker
And so they walked in through the front door and the whole place was pitch black.
00:57:02
Speaker
And the gentleman points to the corner and he says, there you go.
00:57:05
Speaker
And he says, there I go.
00:57:07
Speaker
And he's like, your pinball machine.
00:57:08
Speaker
It's right over there.
00:57:10
Speaker
And come to find out they had had a boiler fire inside this, uh, this bar, if I remember correctly, and black billowing smoke had covered the pinball machine.
00:57:22
Speaker
And so he's sitting there debating, is this really worth my time?
00:57:27
Speaker
Because at this point in time, parts were not being made.
00:57:30
Speaker
And so he's like, well, crap.
00:57:32
Speaker
Well, I guess he took off the back glass, saw that the circuit boards were fried.
00:57:38
Speaker
They were melted in the back glass.
00:57:40
Speaker
He's like, well, I can still, you know, there's other games I can rob circuit boards.
00:57:45
Speaker
That's not a big deal.
00:57:46
Speaker
He's like, if the play field is messed up, then I'm not even,
00:57:51
Speaker
Not even gonna touch it.
00:57:51
Speaker
That's how covered in black smoke this thing was.
00:57:54
Speaker
You couldn't even see through the glass to see the play field.
00:57:58
Speaker
So he took off the glass.
00:58:00
Speaker
kind of rubbed some of the soot off and inserts were perfect.
00:58:05
Speaker
And the play field was unscathed besides the scrubbing he would need to do.
00:58:10
Speaker
And so he said, I'll take it.
00:58:12
Speaker
He didn't tell me how much, but he packed it up that moment, got it home.
00:58:17
Speaker
And he said, it took a lot of scrubbing.
00:58:20
Speaker
You'd be shocked how caked on soot can get and how much elbow grease it takes to get off of a pinball machine.
00:58:28
Speaker
but it was really cool to be playing.
00:58:33
Speaker
It wasn't, that wasn't the exact cactus Canyon because we were at his friend Jeff's house, but it was really cool to know that someone with that much love and care in this hobby wanted to take a pinball machine that was near dead and bring it back to life.
00:58:48
Speaker
And so that's what we're looking for, that we're looking for, and it doesn't have to be stories like that.
00:58:52
Speaker
It could be just really cool pinball stories.
00:58:54
Speaker
It could be, you know,
00:58:56
Speaker
heart, heart jerkers, tear, where are they called tear jerkers?
00:59:01
Speaker
Um, just anything that you want to share that you feel like, Hey, this story really needs to be heard.
00:59:06
Speaker
We want to, we want to put it out there.
00:59:08
Speaker
So what are your thoughts?
00:59:08
Speaker
What do you think?
00:59:10
Speaker
That's cool thing, Scott.
00:59:11
Speaker
I, I think it's really cool.
00:59:12
Speaker
Um, I, I will say, I'm going to give a shout out to, uh, Tony Murphy.
00:59:17
Speaker
He, uh, he posted something that said he was, while he was traveling, he was just looking for a tournament to play in.
00:59:25
Speaker
And he ended up finding one in the suburbs and Roger Sharp was there.
00:59:32
Speaker
So again, just really cool stories like that, that we want to hear about, because those are the fun things in pinball.
00:59:40
Speaker
Well, it was funny.
00:59:40
Speaker
Someone reached out to me.
00:59:41
Speaker
They're like, have you ever ran into a pinball machine at a yard sale?
00:59:46
Speaker
And I said, no, but I ran into one at a Desert Industries.
00:59:49
Speaker
So outside of Utah.
00:59:51
Speaker
That's a thrift store.
00:59:52
Speaker
It's like Goodwill.
00:59:53
Speaker
It's like Goodwill.
00:59:54
Speaker
So outside of Utah, there's Goodwills.
00:59:56
Speaker
Inside Utah, they're called Desert Industries or DI for short is what we call them.
01:00:00
Speaker
I ran into a big game, Stern big game for 125 bucks.
01:00:03
Speaker
He's like, you've got to tell me the story.
01:00:05
Speaker
I'm like, dude, it's not that intense.
01:00:08
Speaker
It was already sold.
01:00:09
Speaker
The guy was coming back to pick it up.
01:00:10
Speaker
I begged the people just to sell it to me and I'd take it now.
01:00:13
Speaker
Oh, you're cold, man.
01:00:16
Speaker
Dude, you leave it, you leave the bounty.
01:00:19
Speaker
He paid the money.
01:00:19
Speaker
Man, you're cold, man.
01:00:21
Speaker
No, he hadn't paid the money.
01:00:26
Speaker
He would agree that he'd come back with the money and a vehicle to move the pinball machine.
01:00:30
Speaker
I got money right here, dude.
01:00:34
Speaker
Well, keep your eyes peeled out for those thrift store finds and go and put a down payment on Rick and Morty.
