Speaker: up everybody. Welcome back to the podcast tonight. Certified Jarvis. we're We're talking about the movie that. Somehow manages to be.
Speaker: long to two different holidays. Is it a Halloween movie? Is it a Christmas movie? We want your opinions. um And.
Speaker: So let's jump in.
Speaker: If that ain't nerves. Talking, I don't know what is. Barely looked into the camera when she did an intro. Um... But yeah. Welcome to the Certified Jarvis Podcast.
Speaker: That is Alyssa. I'm Stephen Jarvis. as Always. Today we are... debating. If. The Nightmare Before Christmas is... A Halloween?
Speaker: Or Christmas movie. Or if you can watch it. during both seasons and anyone that doesn't agree with that can. Kiss our ass. So yeah. This is a real question.
Speaker: Does everybody decorate a pumpkin? Or does everybody put up a Christmas tree? I think you can do both
Speaker: Thanks. this movie. Or you could do a cross. and you could do.
Speaker: Later, pumpkins. on the Christmas tree.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: um
Speaker: So yeah let's Jump in here.
Speaker: So what's what's your thoughts? Do you think it's... Halloween?
Speaker: or more Christmas. I think it's both I mean... It starts off as a Halloween movie. But then... When he goes to Christmas land or Christmas world, whatever the fuck it's called. it becomes a Christmas movie. Hell, they even have an Easter bunny in it.
Speaker: So maybe it's an Easter film. you know. like ah And that's the one thing. I think and think it was so.
Speaker: so minimal though in the movie that i I just really don't. see being able to classify it as that though. They kidnapped the fucking Easter Bunny. What else would you want to fucking classify it as?
Speaker: Christmas or Halloween.
Speaker: because that's the two worlds that they land in for the longest amount of time Yeah, and if they would have made fucking sequels, which I... i I don't know why Tim Burton didn't make more movies on this.
Speaker: I think that Jack Skellington, Sally. booggie Boogie boogie. All that. could have kept coming back for more movies.
Speaker: um You could add the nightmare before. Halloween you could add the nightmare before Easter, you could add the nightmare before Thanksgiving. and There's so many different ways they could have went with it. Um...
Speaker: Big. timeless movie i i don't care what anyone says nowadays it's it's a movie that I watch every Halloween and every Christmas. Yeah, definitely.
Speaker: you know, it's um Definitely one of those movies that. It... so It did. Scare the crap out of me as a kid.
Speaker: Because, I mean... some of the imagery in there was pretty spooky as a kid. I mean look at Jack Skellington. We'll look at like some of the other creatures too.
Speaker: Yeah, that too. And then the fucking mayor always... Yeah. With the flipping head. Yeah. Oh. But speaking of Jack Skellington.
Speaker: One thing that stuck out to me in the movie. is. How relatable. of a character he could be. Because can can you imagine?
Speaker: having the same job. every year. Except your job is literally to scare children. And.
Speaker: Just yearning for that.
Speaker: that out or that change. from from having to scare those children, especially because he is such a hot sauce. soft -hearted.
Speaker: guy. Which just doesn't make sense for.
Speaker: having that type of job. I guess that makes sense. Well, I mean, he he was getting bored of it. you know, and That's what... the whole movie's premise was about is that, you know,
Speaker: He... looked at himself as more than just the pumpkin king more than just a hollow a Halloween icon. He looked at himself as wanting to do more.
Speaker: And... that you know being the pumpkin king was great. probably the first couple hundred years but then he got to the point where he got lonely.
Speaker: you know. none of the townspeople saw that because He made sure of that. And the only person that truly knew how he felt was Sally.
Speaker: And... you know He also felt Sally's hurt. And. I think that's... something that really shows the movie's true colors is that you know hey you could be considered the great greatest whatever you want to be great at.
Speaker: but it's lonely at the top. and Right. Tim Burton. Really did. um Really did.
Speaker: do really great things with this movie. um this was also after him doing batman directing batman so i mean it It's Tim Burton at his finest.
Speaker: And of course, you have Danny Elfman doing the score and also being Jack Skellington in the movie. Yeah. And so it. kind of.
Speaker: Touching back to what you were saying. It's. It's not like he was trying to... Rune Christmas. He was just...
Speaker: trying to find something that would excite him again. Well, yeah, he was he was. He was trying to create Christmas in the way that he thought Christmas should be.
Speaker: Right. And when it didn't work... then Thank God. you know, there was still a santa claus to fall back on and...
Speaker: Kind of tell Jack Skellington like, hey, you know, you you're. You're a king. You're a god here. Like. Stay in that way. But don't.
Speaker: Get in my way or anything like that and and that's why this movie is an all -time classic for me because Honestly, it... It's.
Speaker: It's a person that lost his way. finds his way again. even at the expense of ruining another holiday. Just for...
Speaker: to see if he could be that. and you know, the one person that he truly should have listened to, Sally. was always there. um His dog Zero was always there.
Speaker: And I think. it. it came to that point where Jack. finally realized that he was alone. That Sally was there and that.
Speaker: You know. people truly did care. It's just, it takes you. a while to figure that out Because you.
Speaker: Really? want You really want to find yourself, but sometimes... we all destroy who we truly are. trying to find that person we want to be.
Speaker: Yeah. And so do you think... that Jack's excitement. made him a lovable character or maybe just a completely oblivious character.
Speaker: Well, I mean, it made him a lovable character. It's just the only bad thing was is that at the same time it made him dangerous because. yet again he He tried too hard.
Speaker: to always strive to be the greatest he could be. And. the moral of the story being you don't have to be that person anymore.
Speaker: Like, people will love you for who you truly are if you let them in. Right. And. So. I. I think that he is.
Speaker: A lovable character. but I think he was just... So in his way of. No one cares for me. i'm I need something different.
Speaker: that it almost does reach that oblivion.
Speaker: Yeah. I mean that. Heh. it It really does. do that. In the way that. A lot of. people.
Speaker: just don't understand. How? to go about that. Like, I mean, it was. it's one of those things where People.
Speaker: I think. Again, it's one of those things where you kind of Um... yeah you're You're trying to find your way.
Speaker: But yet. you don't know how to find that way. When? all that happens And. i think I think that's the true moral of the story.
Speaker: is that Jack Skellington. went above and beyond. to try and prove that he was something he wasn't.
Speaker: And. it It almost destroyed him. in that end. And I think that's what. the story. is about is that even when you think you're something you're not.
Speaker: Becoming that something is not more. important than being who you truly are. Right. It comes down to that. that saying of the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
Speaker: I mean, yeah.
Speaker: And so do you do you think this movie has... aged well or um
Speaker: Is some of the magic just... nostalgia. I think. both go hand in hand. I think it's... A tie.
Speaker: an all -time classic. Um... it's It's just something that...
Speaker: It's something that one day will go away. I think it will lose its luster one day. But at the same time, it's like it'll always be nostalgic for me. Just because.
Speaker: It was one of my favorite movies as a kid. And... it still kind is to this day it's just You look at it through the lens of. Jack.
Speaker: And you feel how he feels. Whereas as a kid, you're just... oh cool pretty colors amazing visuals you know all that shit But then... When you really get. to the point of the movie Is that.
Speaker: It's not. always just about. what you want to become it's not losing who you are when you become what you want to become. All right.
Speaker: And. all right i as well agree i think at some point Like every movie. it will find its It's way out.
Speaker: But unfortunately... Unfortunately, because I think that the movie just carries such a... a great message behind it.
Speaker: and
Speaker: I think it's a message that should be.
Speaker: should be learned by everybody. especially new generations. Wow.
Speaker: Because we're we're in a world where it's just.
Speaker: everybody all about themselves. and That's kind of where Jack goes. is
Speaker: he's looking for something for himself and not really paying attention to how it's affecting others around him.
Speaker: And then in the end. It is. brought to light to him that his actions. had consequences and He learned from that. and
Speaker: um
Speaker: That was my train of thought. Well, yeah, I mean, the moral of the story is is that you learn from that mistake You know, he he did make a huge mistake.
Speaker: trying to take over Christmas and trying to be Santa Claus. But. At the same time, when he finally realized it, it was like. Oh damn, you know, I need to save Christmas now, and I need to make Christmas...
Speaker: Better than... what it was. By saving Santa. and Heh. The Oogie Boogie. I love Oogie Boogie. um A really weird character, but...
Speaker: Also a funny one. Especially when he's shit -talking Santa. Yeah. That's pretty funny scene. Yeah. those Fucking three little brats.
Speaker: who Who would you say is your favorite character in the movie? Oh Jack Skellington.
Speaker: I. i think I would have to say Sally's my favorite. Why? Because you relate so much to her?
Speaker: No, I just have such a Big heart for her. and i feel for what she's gone through. Oh, I don't think we know what she gone through.
Speaker: Because, I mean, she's in stitches, so it kind of makes you wonder what happened to her in her real life before she died. Because cause those characters are dead. Great.
Speaker: you know, and I mean, they're There's so many theories on why she's stitched up like that. There's theories why. Um...
Speaker: Jack Skellington died. Or how he died. Um... there' There's theories on everything.
Speaker: Yeah. and And so we... being Jack is your favorite character. Would you? say that he is maybe just a misunderstood dreamer or more of a...
Speaker: walking disaster. Well, he's a dreamer. I mean... Excuse me. he He's one of those people that... which Nothing wrong with that.
Speaker: You know, that's... That's the one thing that most people, they dream of something in their life that, you know, they hope to achieve or that it's always just out of reach. and they hope to one day somehow achieve it.
Speaker: I mean... Hell, there's... There's times where I dream that I wake up in the morning one day and... You know, we're. were a success. With this podcast. And it's going to happen. It's just. It'll take time.
Speaker: You know, we're we're still growing. We're still learning. we're you know. Some of us are. you know. Looking at scripts. Len. you know they need to look just at the screen Maybe not. brush so much.
Speaker: I always rush. Fast talker. It's not the only thing she's fasting. But anyway. um We're not going there. story for a different day. um I...
Speaker: I think what really truly made this movie a classic is that. It is that. it's that Jack Skellington dreams of something different.
Speaker: And... It almost destroys them. Um... And... when he figures out what he truly wanted.
Speaker: was just to be loved. and to have someone.
Speaker: Yeah, but he he had he had Sally. And. I think he... just looked past her. He didn't know ah That she liked him. And she didn't know that he liked her.
Speaker: I mean, it's it's pretty self -explanatory in the beginning of the movie that... you know She really liked him and... he kind of He blew her off. A lot.
Speaker: But I think that's just... Him.
Speaker: trying not to get hurt. with someone that he probably truly does care about.
Speaker: I mean, being a pump being the pumpkin king, you know. it it It'd have to be a lonely... thing to be. Because, I mean... when he sings um his song You can.
Speaker: Feel the torment.
Speaker: And you can feel how. much pain it is. That, you know... He's raised rose to this high. honor of being the pumpkin king but yet
Speaker: He's not happy. he's He's miserable.
Speaker: And. he gets to that point where he wants to give someone else that. position. Just so then he doesn't have to be miserable. But then Sally kind of tells him like, hey.
Speaker: Look at who you are. And realize that you bring joy to millions of these people. in
Speaker: Pumpkin town or whatever the fuck it's called And... To realize that you don't need to be the pumpkin king to be a liked or to enjoy life.
Speaker: And that's why I think. Sally. is so integral. to Jack's story. Because without her... I...
Speaker: Who's to say that? Jack would have saved so Christmas and all that stuff. Right.
Speaker: And yeah that's partly why I think without sally i don't think the movie really would have done
Speaker: well, because I think She was. in the background almost an MVP. of the movie if that makes sense. Yeah.
Speaker: Oh, it does. It's just It's one of those things where...
Speaker: It's one of those things where it It takes a couple of watches to figure it out.
Speaker: And... I mean, there's times where like i I've told. you that I'm like, I still. haven't clearly gotten the message 100 % in the movie.
Speaker: but it's there. And, you know, you just. Again, you have to look inside yourself to find it. Right. Um.
Speaker: That's it. I also have to know What character? in the movie Would you? never want to encounter in real life.
Speaker: The mayor.
Speaker: I would say... probably um
Speaker: scientist isn't the right word. but the the one who is always pulling on. I'm Sally. Oh, the mad scientist. Yeah. I couldn't think of his name. he just seems like an unpleasant guy Yeah.
Speaker: Well, and... Again.
Speaker: I think that's what killed him too. Killed him. was that he wanted to understand things scientifically but yet One experiment he did killed him.
Speaker: Because. That guy was fucking all sorts of balls crazy. See ya. See you. He was.
Speaker: Right. 10 balls short of Same.
Speaker: Oh, actually, like let's up that to five. 500 bells. Peace.
Speaker: Oh.
Speaker: I just realized i I never told you. if I think of it's a Halloween or a Christmas movie. Hmm. Typical. Hmm. It happens.
Speaker: Oh.
Speaker: I don't know. I i always... i always struggle with it. Because there's times where I think, yeah, it really is more of a Halloween movie. But then there's times where I'm like. oh No, it It is still kind of a Christmas movie.
Speaker: Try both. I. That's why I... I have a hard time saying it's one or the other. I... It depends on what time of the season it is.
Speaker: That's like. people saying die hard isn't a christmas movie even though it happens on christmas Or... it There's a Christmas setting. or like Lethal Weapon, you know, people are like, oh, it's just an action movie. It's like, no, it's an action Christmas movie.
Speaker: Yeah. Bye. Um... Unless you got more you want to say, I think that's a good point to wrap it up.
Speaker: I think. i think that's about all i had to say i mean it was it's It's a short movie, so... Mm hmm. we We could talk the the movie to death. or um It's hard to debate when...
Speaker: we both are in agreement that
Speaker: It's technically both a Halloween and a Christmas movie. and
