We both were at Toronto prop expo today. Really awesome. Very awesome. What was your favorite thing today? oh Oh, okay. Well, that's, I'm trying to keep this brief.
00:00:14
Speaker
Um, that's a little hard to do. Uh, there was a girl there who worked on the anniversary episodes of Thunderbirds and had a lot of props and a lot of knowledge. And I spent so much time with her and she was absolutely incredible.
00:00:28
Speaker
Um, That was my favorite person. And I thought it was my favorite stuff until but I found the guy who had a prop from the black hole. Yeah. right Replica. Replica.
00:00:42
Speaker
Not for sale, of course. um But he had ah the Sentry Robot pistol. And he i said, you know, may I please... touch it yeah i'm like oh thank you so i took a picture i wanted to take a proper picture of me with it but i'm like no i this isn't the time or the place but i really wanted to and it's funny because everybody says oh i 3d printed that oh i 3d printed that i'm like yeah i get it but you live in that world i don't me you're all a little gods you know what was your favorite thing
00:01:13
Speaker
ah You know what? The Jason space doc and his amazing model kits of the Star Wars and Star Trek ships. Like yeah amazing so inspiring.
00:01:24
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. As a, as a fellow modeler. I don't even come close to that, but it was, it was really cool to see them up close. Yeah. His looked like props. Yeah, totally. Yeah. And when you add all those tiny lights and everything, it's just, it's a labor of love and it's so beautiful. And I hope he got a lot of attention today. Yeah. yeah This stuff was awesome. I have another question for you. All right. Did you enter any of the raffles?
00:01:47
Speaker
I did. i even bought more raffle tickets. ah What did you, what did you, well, you I, I didn't hear from anybody, so I don't think I won anything. does that mean they did it today? Yeah. The raffle was at three 30. I didn't hear anything either. Maybe they're doing it tomorrow.
00:02:02
Speaker
Yeah. We'll see. We'll see.
00:02:10
Speaker

So grab your honeycombs and your favorite Micronaut and sit back and enjoy.
00:02:29
Speaker
Okay, so we are back. And so we're going to start today's episode with Happy Shark Day. Ooh, baby shark. Doot, doot, doot, doot, doot. One of my favorite topics.
00:02:43
Speaker
I figured it would be. This is pretty cool. um So we're, we're today's the, the, is it today? Actually today? i think it is. No, no, it's not yesterday.
00:02:54
Speaker
and was yesterday. So a little bit behind the times. yeah I've had such a crazy week. I don't even know what day it is. Not to worry. So yesterday was the 50th anniversary of Jaws.
00:03:06
Speaker
Munch, munch, munch. Right? Yes. So both of us were way too young to have enjoyed Jaws in the theater. But when when did you finally actually first see it? ah I was thinking about that yesterday because i don't remember.
00:03:23
Speaker
What I do remember is my mom saw it at the drive-in and she was like, meh. And her mom wanted to see it. So she took her mom to see it in the theater. And that's when she freaked out because of course in the drive-in, the lighting is horrible, blah, blah, blah. But in the theater, she came home freaking out, you know? So I was kind like, oh no, that movie, that, that scary movie. Right.
00:03:47
Speaker
And I probably didn't see it until either it was on TV or VHS because I would have been too scared to see it. No, not VHS. That's too late. So it must have been on TV because by the time the fourth one rolled around, I was like ready, you know, and that's 87. We're already well into VHS at that point.
00:04:07
Speaker
Yeah, because the the it came out in VHS in 1980. So that's when I would have seen it It's just like, yeah how do you even begin?
00:04:18
Speaker
you know what I mean? i don't think I've ever heard anybody have an unkind word about that movie. You know, it's so perfect in so many ways and so many happy accidents that just make it an incredible film.
00:04:30
Speaker
um And I don't know if you want to touch on the sequels. We don't have to. Oh, yeah, absolutely. i'm I'm a fan of all of them. Yeah. And um but when I'm what I was going to say was, you know, like the direction, of course, is so killer in the first one.
00:04:44
Speaker
But it's funny because there's a couple of scenes in the second one that really are a tribute to the first film. And I just think like, good job on the second one, you know, the far from perfect. But there's some really nice, unrushed scenes, especially with Brody.
00:05:01
Speaker
where I'm like, it feels like a tribute to the first one. And I don't think, you know, they really get... Sorry, I can't speak poorly about any of them. I know people like to. But, you know, if you talk about the second one specifically, like, you know, I think it deserves a little bit of a nicer reception than it tends to get.
00:05:19
Speaker
But when you're a fan, of course, everything's perfect, right? Yeah, I mean, you're going to see it through those lenses for sure. Yeah. I remember... first all the talk about this when I was in junior high who and like all the older kids were like oh my god you know naked swimmer shark and I'm like oh my god this is absolutely terrifying my source of knowledge at the time was because I had a paper route was I would go through every single paper and read every movie ad
00:05:54
Speaker
Oh, yeah. yeah And Jaws was always like, you know, a half page and then it was a full page and it was like, you know, every day for weeks. And I'm like, this sounds like the best, most horrific movie ever.
00:06:09
Speaker
and i really I just was like, I was so wound up in it for the longest time. Of course, I was too young to see it. My parents were never going to go see that. oh That's funny. And so what did I do?
00:06:22
Speaker
i bought the making of Jaws book. Oh yeah, of course. And I lived for that book. Like I knew everything about Jaws. It was, it had a bunch of pictures in the inside.
00:06:35
Speaker
yeah of, you know, just some of the scenes, you know, the the mechanical shark hanging off over the water. And I just was just, wow, this book is just mind blowing. I can't wait to see this movie.
00:06:48
Speaker
I think everybody had that book, you know, like that's an interesting thing to touch on because I'll bet you it sold a ton. Oh, I'm sure it did. People reference it every now and then, like that's their Bible for, you know, becoming a director.
00:07:00
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, totally. Yeah. Yeah. So that was, that was my first exposure to it. And and I think I, so I probably saw it with friends when we would rent some VHS. Like I had a friend who had, you know, a VCR and a rich friend.
00:07:17
Speaker
What was it? Yeah. Oh yeah. They had money. They lived in Coquitlam. So they had money. They we would rent videos and yeah go to her place and stay up all night and watch these, these videos.
00:07:28
Speaker
I saw a lot of really scary movies. over that time period. Like Alien, same thing. I saw Alien that way. Yeah, that makes sense. But that was the first time I i saw Jaws, and I was just horrified.
00:07:39
Speaker
ah Even on a tiny screen, right? It's still effective. When I was a kid, I hadn't seen the movie yet, but my parents bought me this orange T-shirt that had the Jaws shark you know coming up, like the poster.
00:07:53
Speaker
But instead of it saying Jaws across the top, it had my name navy blue iron-on letters. And I loved that shirt, even though I had to see it. I love that shirt so much. And it's funny because I don't know why my parents got it, but it was super cool.
00:08:11
Speaker
And of course, in the 70s, it has to have the velvet lettering, right? Navy blue lettering on an orange shirt. um Just so awesome. Well, yeah, like what parents are not going to run out and buy a horror movie T-shirt for their, you know, pre-teens. And the funny thing is, I won't take us too far, but like the second one, i remember being in the car in the backseat, of course, and we were driving past a drive-in where the second one was playing.
00:08:36
Speaker
Yeah. And I'm staring out the window like in terror and it's the water skiing scene. And I'm just like the whole time I'm just staring and I can't look away and I'm just like, wow. you know, and that was the seventies. Like, like, like that was the first blockbuster. Was it not?
00:08:55
Speaker
i It certainly was a big one. I think so. I think it was like, you know, that was the start of the summer. the some Oh, yeah, yeah, for sure. And movies were such an event back then because everybody went, everybody saw it. And if you were lucky, you got to see it two or three more times, you know, before it disappeared.
00:09:14
Speaker
But just, you know, everybody was reading the book at the beach. Nobody was going in the water. you know, I was terrified. Like it terrified me. I was like, I can't go in a pool. i can't go in a bathtub.
00:09:25
Speaker
Can't go in the sink. I'm like, Nope. Turks. Nope. Nope. Nope. And I hadn't even seen it yet. You know, sink shark. but Yeah, exactly. he had Dixie cup. Nope. It's raining sharks. ah But just so terrifying, you know, but like even to this day, it's an amazing film.
00:09:44
Speaker
And I do love the second one. i appreciate the third one. is you know it is what it is and then the fourth one the fourth one for me is special because i didn't know it was coming out and i was working at the shepherd center and this is the summer of 87 and i went upstairs on a break to wh smith And just outside the store, they had one of those corrugate standees of like 20 copies of the novel for Jaws the Revenge. And I remember just standing there going, oh, my God, there's another movie coming. And I was so excited.
00:10:25
Speaker
And that moment, as silly as it sounds, I was just like I was thrilled. Like I remember it like yesterday. you know, I mean, here we go. And there's another one. And I have no issue with the fourth one. I can laugh at it.
00:10:38
Speaker
if I want, there's a lot of funny things in it if you're a fan, but it's just like, sorry, they all get a pass because they're Jaws. who you know i don't I don't even remember the plot of the fourth one.
00:10:51
Speaker
The fourth one is as Ellen, Ellen Brody. Oh, that's right. This time it's personal. It's personal. The shark was after Ellen specifically. Yes. And her family.
00:11:02
Speaker
Yes. Because, you know, that happens, right? But, like, it's fine. You know what he mean? and what's what's his name is in it? Oh, how could forget? One of the Monty Python guys.
00:11:13
Speaker
Eric? I don't remember. Oh, Michael Caine. Michael Caine. Oh, Michael Caine. Yes. Because he famously made it just for the money. you know Of course he did. He didn't want to be in it. he's i think I think it's something like, you know, I can buy my house or I can finish my house if I make this movie, you know, and that's why he did it. And I'm like, okay, you know, but it's a it's it's part of the family, you know.
00:11:40
Speaker
It's funny too. i just I just read a thing that said that basically Alien was pitched as Jaws in space. Oh, really? Maybe that's why it's so good. Right?
00:11:51
Speaker
See, I can handle those movies because they're science fiction. like I appreciate Jaws. We have sharks. But it's not a guy with an axe. It's not a guy with a gun. It's not a guy with a machete.
00:12:03
Speaker
You know what I mean? So I can handle alien horror. I can handle Jaws horror. You know what I mean? Although I get very upset when people get hurt in real life. Water. It's horrible, horrible, horrible. Oh, yeah.
00:12:14
Speaker
Especially when it's supposed to be so rare, but yet it still happens, right? Oh, it totally does happen. do and Have you got other movies that you love in the summertime? Like summertime type movies? Yeah, or just ones that you have to watch it's because it's summer.
00:12:30
Speaker
I don't know. i think I used to. I don't i don't really sort of reserve that anymore. i just i have movies I love and I'll watch them a million times. And they're usually, you know, like Star Wars or Star Trek.
00:12:43
Speaker
Talk about Star Wars. Two of the summer films, even though they're not summer films at all, but because they were always on TV when you're out of school and it's summertime, Logan's Run and The Fly. Yeah.
00:12:55
Speaker
They were always. And which one? The Fly, the original. Oh, The Fly. Yeah. Yeah, that was a good movie. They were always on in the summertime and that's when I would see them. So The Fly and Logan's Run to me are summer movies.
00:13:08
Speaker
You know what? i don't I don't think we spent a lot of time inside watching movies. Yeah. because we were always traveling in the summer, right? Oh, of course. We'd get thrown in the camper and they would just, you know, drive away somewhere.
00:13:20
Speaker
So we didn't spend a lot of time. I didn't have a lot of sort of summer movie time. As I got older and I was a teen, we would start to do things. I'd go to the drive-in. i love that. And then those were usually like, you know, cheap horror flakes of some some sort, like, you Piranha.
00:13:36
Speaker
Oh, Piranha. Good one. Yeah. Steven Spielberg actually declared that as the best of the Jaws ripoffs. Oh, that's funny. Yeah. But i yeah, I don't i don't think of of movies as being, I mean I think the only thing that kind of stuck out in my head was like, in things like Grease.
00:13:55
Speaker
Oh, for sure. Right. Another summer movie. Yeah. yeah ah Jurassic Park, all those. Yeah. Park films. Congo. I know you love Congo. Congo. Congo is a summer movie.
00:14:10
Speaker
And the parent trap. Okay, that's a good summer movie. But I can't watch that until kids are out of school. know what mean? really? Yeah. Like for me, it's like, I love the parent trap. We're talking about the original one, by the way. Yeah.
00:14:22
Speaker
But it's like, no, until the kids are out of school, I can't watch it because it's not, it doesn't work. They have to be out of school. Oh, that's so awesome. And do you like Back to the Beach? I don't remember.
00:14:32
Speaker
yes i did love back to the beach yeah yeah like gosh i think that was 87 as well or maybe it was 88 like so long ago it totally was so so let me ask you some questions um about we're gonna go i'm gonna go back to jaws because it's the birthday of jaws happy birthday birthday so yeah can you sing the happy birthday shark song No, I don't know that. No, and I don't think there is one. I only just heard Baby Shark the other day for the first time.
00:15:05
Speaker
And I didn't mind it. I get why people say like, oh, grates, you know, but like, oh, I don't know. I think it grates because their kids play it over and over and over again. Yeah. Like, whereas I don't have to hear that. but No, you do not.
00:15:18
Speaker
You can turn it off after the first. Yeah. The little bit that I got, I'm like, oh, that's cute. Yeah. Not after the A-M-A time. Okay, stop. um So ah did you know that Jaws actually won some Academy awards Probably for music. Am I right?
00:15:38
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Did it win other things? John Williams won for best score. As he should. Did it win for other things? Yeah. ah Film editing, actually. oh I was going to say, what about sound?
00:15:49
Speaker
Oh, editing, of course. That was that woman. Sound one well. Yeah. That woman, though I feel bad for not remembering her name. Like, she's a huge part of that film. Like, her and Spielberg just sat there. Oh, Verna.
00:15:59
Speaker
Verna Fields. Thank you. Yeah, editing together. You know what I mean? And like, like, a lot of credit has to go to her. Like she really babied that film, you know, baby film. No
00:16:13
Speaker
so more baby sharks. Sorry. Sorry. But they're so cute.
00:16:18
Speaker
ah It also won. Well, obviously John Williams won again, ah BAFTA award and then won golden globe and then won Grammy.
00:16:29
Speaker
Wow. Yeah. Melt those down. I mean, that soundtrack is iconic. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Like it had never been done. Right. like I there is a story about it being knocked off of something else. And I deliberately don't recall it because I don't really want to know.
00:16:47
Speaker
But, you know, there's there's no doubt. Right. Even what's his face doing the voiceover for the trailers. um Oh, who was it? You know what I'm talking about?
00:16:59
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know the name. It's the perfect it's the perfect <unk>s the perfect trailer. It's the perfect marketing. You know what i mean? that's And it's the perfect score, you know even when it's not the quote-unquote scary music.
00:17:10
Speaker
And it's just all that uplifting, happy you know music you know when they're on the water and stuff. It's just it's flawless, right? But that's what makes a good movie, where...
00:17:21
Speaker
whether you're conscious of it or not, the actors are superior. The music is superior. The editing is superior. The direction is superior. It's like, it's all just coming together and you're like, wow, that was really good. I'm like, yes, because so many factors made it that way. Right. Yeah. Yeah.
00:17:37
Speaker
I think what's important too with the, with the music is the music shouldn't be telling us how to feel. The music should be supporting how we feel. Totally. Totally. Right. And I think that was jarring or, you know, or you're so aware of it at that point.
00:17:53
Speaker
Yeah. I don't want to be aware of the music. I want the music to be part of the suspense or the, the excitement that I'm feeling in the film. Yeah. And, uh, that's kind of lost sometimes in, in today's films because they're so rushed and, and they,
00:18:06
Speaker
You know, they hire somebody who who doesn't necessarily have the experience to build on that story. And they're just like, yep, here's your soundtrack. you know Let's shoot it out the door. i buy so many soundtracks because i buy them really as just like a ah souvenir of of the show or the movie.
00:18:25
Speaker
And I do gay to get around to listening to them. And they're so bland. And they're it's such a ah repetitive thing. I'm like, is this the same soundtrack that this was? And this is the same as this?
00:18:36
Speaker
you know They're all the same. There's just nothing to them. And I appreciate that a lot of them now are just one soundtrack. artist sitting down you know and and doing their best but it's just like what's the last one you could really get excited about that you remember you know what I mean and I know there's themes like E.T. and ah Jurassic you know what I mean it's not something i want to listen to um but you know film scores just seem to just I don't know I don't notice them anymore yeah I think um
00:19:10
Speaker
I think the last major sort of soundtrack that I really, really loved was probably, ah the nightmare before Christmas, but also because it had so many amazing songs.
00:19:23
Speaker
Right. So, and that was a soundtrack that I was like, you know what, this is really special music. Like it it was really fun to listen to. Yeah, absolutely.
00:19:35
Speaker
So did you know, you probably know because you probably have it, but Jaws was first released on DVD in 2000. Yeah. seem right? Yeah, because I remember living downtown and I think I bought it at HMV.
00:19:50
Speaker
um I can see the cover and then it took a little while for the others to come out. Yeah. Yeah. You'd think they would have rushed that a little earlier, but... Right. Well, like well sorry, I'm thinking out loud here.
00:20:07
Speaker
um i got my player in 1999. Okay, I was going to say, is that because of that whole war between... What was it? um Oh, no, I'm thinking of Blu-ray.
00:20:18
Speaker
Yes, I know, the Blu-ray and the HD. Yeah, the Blu-ray and the HD. Yeah. Hmm. It's weird that they waited... But I guess that's about right. Well, yeah it sounds late, but i don't really think it is. i don't know if you remember when I bought my my DVD player and it was like $1,000 in 1999. Yeah. money And I said, like, do I get free movies with this? Do you remember that? because i was so like nobody's ever spent this much money on anything before right and i'm standing in the next store they're v vcr player yeah right on and i'm looking at the movies and i'm like what will i get austin powers what will i get because not much was out right you know but i thought well i'll be happy if they give me austin powers i don't know why i was thinking that i'm like do i get a free movie he's like no why would they give me a free movie i don't know why i thought that movies are 109 separately
00:21:09
Speaker
ah yeah exactly And it's just recorded from the VHS. And the funny thing is like in 99, I bought my DVD player exactly 10 years later. i bought my Blu-ray player exactly 10 years later. bought a 4k player. I'm like, that's really funny.
00:21:28
Speaker
So things like jaws I've owned on every format, except the, is it called video disc? You know, the RCA, the needle yeah one.
00:21:41
Speaker
Yeah. Spectra vision something. I can't remember. Anyway. That was the LaserDisc in the plastic box. Yeah. Yeah. yeah it was video deals yeah Yeah. I never had Jaws on that, but I certainly had on every other format going, you know.
00:21:56
Speaker
Well, in the first ever LaserDisc market in North America was the release of Jaws in 78. Really? Yeah. really yeah well well yeah i love those old commercials for the old players where everybody gathers around and you know and they watch like halloween you know and the the picture quality is horrible yeah exactly but ill but you can't tell because you're watching the commercial on your tv which is like you know 13 inches across into but eight pixels
00:22:28
Speaker
when the When those things first launched and my parents and I were in the States, I think we were somewhere in Pennsylvania, and i was in a record store, and here was this display with Planet of the Apes and Grease. And I just, you know, I'm looking at my dad and I'm like, we can watch these at home? Like my little brain was just like exploding You know, and that was that needle video disc. You know, i just I just couldn't I couldn't begin to even believe that you could watch something like that at home.
00:23:01
Speaker
And then, yeah, when BCRs came along, it was like, well, it can't afford it, but we would rent them. who Oh, yeah. Yeah, totally. Yeah. And what would you rent the black hole, please? Over and over and over.
00:23:13
Speaker
I'm sorry, that one came back worn out. Yeah, exactly. Cannot play any anymore. hmm. I don't even remember what I was watching. i think, like I said, like at my friends would, we would rent, you know, and watch, say up all night on Friday nights or Saturday nights and just watch, you know horror movies all the time.
00:23:31
Speaker
That's the thing, right? Like all my friends would have parties and they would rent BCRs and horror movies. And I think all those people that are, quote unquote addicted to VHS is, you know, the horror fans, I mean, is because that's how you watched it.
00:23:45
Speaker
And there was so much made for that market, you know what I mean? and it's still that way. Like, you know, man i like physical media every Tuesday, here's 10 more horror movies that are out today, you know? So i guess that's really one of the only ways people get to see things still who classic or independent, you know?
00:24:06
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. We also got to see the stage play. the shark is broken. hmm.
00:24:19
Speaker
And why are you saying it like that? No, because it's awesome that we got to see that. Some people know it was really cool. now I think it was in New York like ah a month ago. You know, and we saw it, what, two years ago? Yeah, it it's been traveling for sure.
00:24:33
Speaker
Yeah, just like the shark, especially in fourth one. Anyway, sorry. ah But yeah, that was wonderful. It was yeah well that was really cool. We saw that in Toronto. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. yeah Like, even though it's not the movie, it's like watching the movie in front of you, you know, really cool. well And it was just, it was such a cool thing. Like it was this, here's it and ah you know, a section of these actors lives.
00:24:59
Speaker
while they were waiting for the shark to get fixed so they could keep filming this movie. Yeah. Yeah. I get that. It drove everybody crazy, you know, and especially when you just think like this movie is going to be nothing and it's still sucking up my life.
00:25:15
Speaker
mean, what is the point of going on? Right. Never dreaming. It's going to be, huge forever oh yeah totally did you get to sorry go ahead did get to see the jaws ride at universal back in the day no i don't think i did i think it was broken when we were in oh no even that shark wasn't working yeah totally the shark was totally broken part one Yeah, no, it was not it was not running when I got to be there.
00:25:42
Speaker
We got to see it March of 1980. I only saw it once, but I did get to see it. And Japan still has it, of course. Of course. Yeah, yeah. They're very lucky.
00:25:55
Speaker
That's awesome.
00:25:58
Speaker
All right. So what else have we got here to talk about? jaws for birthday. ja is fifty birthday There was also a Jaws musical.
00:26:11
Speaker
Oh, really? Did you hear about that? No. So there was two musicals written. One was called Jaws the Musical, and the other one was called Giant Killer Shark the Musical. Okay. And funny enough, it premiered at the Toronto Fringe Festival.
00:26:26
Speaker
Oh. Yeah. Maybe I saw it. There's no way would passed that over. I probably did, you know. It was in 2006. Yeah.
00:26:37
Speaker
Yeah. That sounds about right. I probably saw it. Oh, dear. I feel bad for not remembering it. Uh-oh. have to go faithfully every year. There's no way I would have passed that up. But, oh, dear. I don't remember it.
00:26:50
Speaker
Uh-oh. You'll have to go look it up. Yeah. It was ah it was a musical composed by a Canadian yeah musician by the name of Sam Sutherland. And he ran it at the Toronto and the Winnipeg ah Fringe Festival.
00:27:02
Speaker
And it won best of the best. Got a five star rating. Wow. Well, good job. I did miss that one. And being the pop culture icon monster that it is, it also i just got a Lego release, which I think is really freaking cool.
00:27:22
Speaker
So is that because I've been confused. There's so many tribute things and so much CGI i things. Is it the boat and the shark? that what you're getting?
00:27:32
Speaker
And is it out to buy? Yeah, it came out last year. oh wow. Okay. yeah Yeah, it came out last year. um And it it's, yeah, where Bruce the shark is attacking ah the ship.
00:27:44
Speaker
And you get all three of the guys on the boat. How many shark dollars? It is a lot of shark dollars. I'm trying to remember because I think I just saw that one.
00:27:55
Speaker
Are you buying it right now? No.
00:28:01
Speaker
So he turned around and I thought he was grabbing his wallet so he could start ordering this Jaws shark. No, I'm grabbing my own little four-legged sharky here. Aww. Yeah, it's it's about a $200 set.
00:28:13
Speaker
is that Is that expensive for Lego? It's mid-range. It's not. No. I mean, the the average Lego sets, depending on what they are and the license that they are, they're usually under $100 around $100. Oh, okay. So a kind of that mid-range. Okay.
00:28:31
Speaker
And then 500 to 1,000 is the, out of this galaxy range. Is it, is the ship, well, is the boat, sorry. Is the boat like the full boat or is like a sinking version?
00:28:44
Speaker
It is the full boat. Full boat, yeah. but And the shark is just like right at the end of the boat, like ready to take a bite. Oh, cool, cool. Yeah. Yeah. And it comes on its own sort of like diorama thing too, which is really cool.
00:28:56
Speaker
wow. Are you scared of sharks? No. I don't like the idea of sharks. So when I was a kid, I did a lot of swimming and I think I just didn't like anything in the water. And it got to the point where I just got scared to go swimming.
00:29:12
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. um And it wasn't so much a shark thing. It was just any underwater creature because we did most of our swimming in lakes. So we weren't in the ocean as much. Right. Although I did probably worry about it, but I was just worried about anything grabbing me from underneath the water.
00:29:30
Speaker
Yeah, like I had no problem as a little, little kid, but as soon as Jaws came, it was like you had to drag me into the water, and I never wanted to not be able to touch the bottom yeah you know of the lake, and you know i'd want to be able to see at all times what's around me.
00:29:47
Speaker
Yeah. And like you could go out the the beach where our cottage was, you could go out really far, like way too far you know for a little kid to be like going out on his own, of course, but different times.
00:29:59
Speaker
and then I would remember this little Archie comic where they got attacked by a shark because they got stuck on. Yeah. yeah Yeah. Well, because everybody had to have a shark story back then. Right.
00:30:12
Speaker
They got stuck on a dune. You know, and I was like, oh, no, it's going to happen to me. It's going to happen to me.
00:30:20
Speaker
I was a ah snorkel and goggle kid. So I had fins and goggles and snorkels. I loved exploring. But like, once again, it was that thing where, you know, because I had goggles on, I could see what was happening.
00:30:34
Speaker
to me like See, that's scary. Well, yeah, still, but I was okay as long as I could see if there was a shark. I did i never liked muddy water or unclear water or water with grass or weeds in it. yeah That always freaked me out.
00:30:49
Speaker
And then i lost one of my fins in a lake that was so deep that when one of my flippers fell off, nobody was ever able to find it again. And I'm like, that is the deepest lake ever. And I am so terrified.
00:31:02
Speaker
Oh my gosh. Yeah. All the, all the big kids were diving like all day. It was like this game, like let's go get this kid's, you know, flipper. It sunk to the bottom. then All day they were diving and nobody could find my flipper. I'm like, that's it. Nobody came back again.
00:31:18
Speaker
Nope, that was it. Oh, scary. But then we had a pool and then we would play Jaws in the pool. Oh, that's probably dangerous too, though. You know, if you're the kind of kids who like drown drown or, drowner you know, it's like, oh, I guess more just about going into the water and scaring people by grabbing their legs.
00:31:37
Speaker
That's what I mean. It all seems like fun until until somebody gets their leg bitten off. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. but it wasn't real. It was just a game.
00:31:49
Speaker
That's true. All right. Here's, here's a, here's a trivia question for you. I got to find my stuff here. Oh, I think I lost them. The answer is Amity. It's always Amity. Fourth of July.
00:32:04
Speaker
okay i can't, I can't find my, yeah I'm just going to read a, um, trivia pursuit eighties for you then. How's that? Okay. Okay. Okay. What Star Wars spoof starred John Candy as Bartholomew?
00:32:20
Speaker
Spaceballs.
00:32:24
Speaker
That one is really, really special because Spaceballs is getting a sequel finally. hu Did you hear about that? Sorry, I should watch my action. You know what am, actually? I did enjoy Spaceballs. I love that kind of spoofy comedy.
00:32:41
Speaker
Oh, I do too, but I don't remember enjoying it but... see I did because I loved Star Wars so much. To me, I'm like, you know what? I get all the references and I love them and they made me laugh. oh now I'm a little nervous because everybody who is still alive is very old. Yeah.
00:32:58
Speaker
And I think um if what's his name doesn't hurry up and make this film, he's not going to make it. Oh, um, oh, isn't that sad? Uh, uh, oh my gosh, Mr. High Anxiety, right? Yeah, totally. Mel Brooks. oh Mel Brooks.
00:33:14
Speaker
Like seriously, the guy's what, in his like late 90s? He's got to hurry up. He is definitely older now. and Yeah, definitely Rick Moranis? Who else is in it? Yeah, Rick Moranis is coming back for it.
00:33:25
Speaker
Um, uh i can't remember anybody's name i'm so bad with anybody else i mean i can't think fast enough obviously well candy the guy who played um he kind played the sort of han solo character he's uh he's coming back with his son and okay so okay there we go so space or is it still next year i think they said yeah So we better give you a Oh, yeah, damn it.
00:33:56
Speaker
Give me that. one up. Give me that.
00:34:00
Speaker
Okay, here's here's a here's a theme related. Okay. What Steven Spielberg movie saw its two young stars, Dominique Dunn and Heather O'Rourke, die within six years of the film's release?
00:34:16
Speaker
I never know names, so that's not a clue for me. Is it E.T.? No. Okay. That gets you a buzzer.
00:34:28
Speaker
um I don't like that. Poltergeist. Oh, okay. Yeah, speaking of really good horror films, I enjoyed Poltergeist, but it was one of those ones that I saw at a friend's house on on VHS.
00:34:40
Speaker
We saw it in a hotel when we were traveling like as a family, and I just i had i heard the film, but I didn't watch it. That's awesome. it Are those child actors or adult actors that died shortly after?
00:34:55
Speaker
I think one was ah the woman who was saying, go into the light. Okay. And the other one was Carol Ann who went into the light. Oh, wow. Yeah. Well, she was warned. Oh, sorry. Sorry.
00:35:07
Speaker
Sorry. But she did it anyways. who who decline into ah Who declined the offer to direct the Star Wars film Return of the Jedi and instead went over and directed The Dead Zone?
00:35:20
Speaker
Oh, I wouldn't know. Did you see The Dead Zone? I can see the poster. i can see the No, I can see the logo, like the the movie logo. But no I didn't see it Good movie. I really enjoyed that one. Yeah. Yeah. Stephen King story.
00:35:37
Speaker
That was ah David Cronenberg. Oh, okay. I figured I would have an interesting answer, but. Yeah, that would, I think that we're Return of the Jedi probably would not really have been his style.
00:35:49
Speaker
Well, it still might've been better though. no, I totally agree. It might not have been a Muppet movie, but you know, yeah I don't know. It seems like it's a weird choice for him. Like, I don't hate the Ewoks. It's just not a great movie.
00:36:04
Speaker
ah Yeah, we'll get into that. That's an episode. Yeah, okay. Because I'm not a fan, so it doesn't have to appeal to me. but
00:36:15
Speaker
Okay. There is a good joke, though, about why did they have the the the princess dress ready at the end? Oh, why? They must have killed the previous woman wore it.
00:36:27
Speaker
They ate her. They definitely ate the previous princess. That's awesome. Well, that's all I got for you. I just wanted to celebrate Jaws.
00:36:38
Speaker
Well, yeah. Birthday of Jaws. Did you have shark cake today? No, that would have been nice. Yeah. Oh. so Some red velvet cake. Sorry, that makes me think about like ah those poor sharks that are killed in the ocean every day.
00:36:51
Speaker
No, don't say that. That's a horrible, horrible, horrible act. Like, ye any any cruelty to any animal, you know, but my God, you know, like to think that...
00:37:03
Speaker
they could be gone in our lifetime. he Just sad. Yeah, well, we've already wiped out, what, 40% of our animal population, so, you know. Crazy. Let's just go for 80.
00:37:16
Speaker
Did you see, was it called Sharkwater? No, that was a film, wasn't it? what's the What's the movie, the the the Toronto guy who did the documentary about how sharks really aren't going to bother you in the ocean?
00:37:30
Speaker
And his documentary, he was swimming with them at all times. And by the time it was over, I was a believer. I'm like, these sharks are never going to touch you. They don't care about you at all. And he just really wanted to debug that myth.
00:37:43
Speaker
What was it called? Blue water? What the heck was it called? and Blue water, white death? No, no, no, no. That's um that's an actual movie. But then he actually died in the ocean 10 later.
00:37:58
Speaker
What was that from a shark bite? I'm trying to remember. was hoping you might remember. He was a local guy. Anyway, it was, it was quite astonishing. Like, like, as I say, by the time that documentary was over, I'm like, yep.
00:38:10
Speaker
Sharks don't care about you at all. It was literally just diving like with them, like all around him and they couldn't care less. Yeah. you know So it was it was clear quite something. But then there's the tragedy of, well, you died in the ocean. Oh, God. Sorry. Yeah. Get out of the water, people.
00:38:28
Speaker
and That's like the yeah the guy who you know was living with the grizzlies. And did he die of? Yeah. And then a grizzly just came down and, yeah you know, ended him.
00:38:39
Speaker
So that's sad, right? It's sad. Totally. You know, you believe in something, but nature is nature. And, you know, you might think you've charmed them, you know, but they're animals, right?
00:38:53
Speaker
Is it called Sharkwater? Oh, maybe it was. A documentary. Rob Stewart. that He's trying to protect sharks. That's sounding right. There we go.
00:39:04
Speaker
Yeah. All right. so So here's your homework, listeners. Go and watch Sharkwater. Save some sharks. Yeah. Just don't swim with them. It's not really needed. Do you mind looking his cause of death?
00:39:17
Speaker
Yeah. Let's see if it's right here. i saw that AMC, which of course we don't have anymore. ah It won 31 awards. Yeah. Yeah. he um he died while he's making the sequel.
00:39:33
Speaker
Really? There was going to be a sequel. Yeah. He was doing a followup.
00:39:38
Speaker
Let's see if there's some, yeah, he was in Florida filming the sequel. um Then something happened. They went to try to get him. He was still in the water and then he just vanished. Yeah.
00:39:51
Speaker
yeah I remember his father having to address the media and it was so sad. well yeah, that would just be you know devastating for sure. yeah Oh, gosh.
00:40:03
Speaker
Forgive me, but I always say get out of the water, get out of the water. Yeah. You're not supposed to be in the water. Well, not that water. It's okay to go in your bathtub. Listeners. It's okay to take a shower. Please, please take your showers.
00:40:17
Speaker
Please. It's, it's okay to swim in your pool. Yes. Not, not a public pool. That's not safe. nice for sure Do i still water parkks here? ah like You mean like the kiddie parks with like spraying things?
00:40:33
Speaker
Yes, there are still water parks. is there okay right yeah Nothing I think in in our meated area, but for sure. We went to a water park in, I want to say Ottawa a few years ago. Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:40:46
Speaker
Yeah, it was fun. Cool. Awesome. Cool. Oh, and there and I think there's a water park at Canada's Wonderland. Is there? Okay. Yeah. Yeah, totally. All right. So, listeners, water parks are safe-ish.
00:41:00
Speaker
Your pool is safe. Your spa is safe. And your shower is safe. So please enjoy those things safely. Please don't play the shark song on repeat.
00:41:12
Speaker
Baby shark. Baby shark.
00:41:16
Speaker
Please don't. Don't break your brain. Yeah, that's ah that's all I've got for you today. And so now I'm going to hit the outro music and we are going to fade out.
