Personal Pregnancy Experiences and Challenges

00:01:06
Speaker
But if you're not following us on there, we have announced that we are having another baby, which is so exciting and such a big blessing. But going through the first trimester can definitely be a hard time. I'm not just talking about when you can rest all the time or when you're on holidays or when you're able to have a very different lifestyle. But for me, being super busy, running a successful naturopathic clinic and raising a family and trying to do all the things, it is very time consuming and takes a lot out of me. So there's some good ways that I can teach you that you can survive even when you've got a lot on your plate.
00:01:46
Speaker
But I'd say my little bean is definitely taking all of my supplements this pregnancy. even in the first trimester when I have felt like crap, because I know that it does make me feel better when I do take them. And it's obviously very important for Bub as well.
00:02:00
Speaker
So yeah, I very rarely missed any days, which I'm very proud of myself. That also might be a big bean, to be honest with you. And then I'd say my big bean, oh, probably nutrition this time around. Not that I've ever been terrible, but I just have noticed that I've really tried to focus on certain types of food that are going to support this pregnancy and the growth of this beautiful little baby.
00:02:21
Speaker
But yes, exciting times ahead. We're already very busy. This is baby number five, although we lost our beautiful little Winnie. So our fourth living baby. Obviously, I am still early days. I've just gotten into the second trimester, feeling like there are some days in there that I can actually...

Importance of Rest and Hormonal Changes in First Trimester

00:02:40
Speaker
breathe. So no better time than now to talk a little bit more about the first trimester and my top tips, especially coming from a fertility naturopath on how to survive the first trimester.
00:02:52
Speaker
You might've heard me mention rest is very important. and i want you to think of rest like it is part of your job i have actually been very good this time around at saying no to certain things and also in the afternoon if i don't have to do anything i will literally get into bed not in bed just sit up on the bed put my feet up and do my emails from bed and that is huge for me because that is not the norm but i know that my body is working so hard in this first trimester to grow this beautiful little baby. So number one is definitely rest.
00:03:28
Speaker
And you might need to schedule it in like me because there's so many reasons why you're so tired. But during the first trimester, your progesterone levels soar. They act as a natural sedation, believe it or not. Progesterone is beautiful and it works on so many different things. But your body's also diverting massive amounts of energy to build the placenta and get that prepped and ready.

Herbs, Sleep, and Stress Reduction During Pregnancy

00:03:50
Speaker
Also to regulate your blood sugar levels and increase your blood volume. which is up to 50% by the end of pregnancy. That is huge.
00:04:00
Speaker
Research actually shows that disturbed or shortened sleep in early pregnancy is linked to higher cortisol levels, which is our stress hormone, and more severe nausea and fatigue.
00:04:12
Speaker
If you have been lucky enough to go through pregnancy, you will understand and you've experienced the first trimester nausea and fatigue, you will ah absolutely understand how important that sleep is, but how disturbed it can be. I noticed that from an early...
00:04:31
Speaker
stage, I will get up and pee all through the night and it will be early on. Like I'm not even showing her anything yet, but it definitely feels like there's growing happening. There's swelling happening in the area. And it just feels like you can't hold onto as much as what you normally would. So definitely making sure that we are prioritizing sleep.
00:04:50
Speaker
obviously stress hormone working on our stress as well and supporting our nausea and fatigue. I've been lucky enough that I haven't really got a lot of fatigue in any of my pregnancies. Obviously there's a little bit more tiredness towards the end of pregnancy, but nothing like I need to be in bed for a whole trimester. But in many traditional systems, including Ayurvedic and Western herbal medicine, the first trimester is known as the nesting phase, which is so beautiful.
00:05:17
Speaker
where the mother actually conserves energy to allow the embryo to root. That is so beautiful to me that it just allows time for that embryo to start to develop. Your body is working so hard. It still has to keep you alive and get you to do all the things while also literally growing

Managing Nausea and Food Aversions with Diet

00:05:33
Speaker
a new human. So we have beautiful herbs in clinic, many that I've been leaning on, but obviously you need to have a consultation to make sure that you are getting the correct Advice and prescription for your case with some beautiful herbs, things like chamomile and perilla and some other lovely ones like withania are so supportive of our stress response, relaxation and our body and our nervous system as well. but
00:06:01
Speaker
It's also a great way to improve our sleep and yes, lower that cortisol. If you want to book an appointment, definitely reach out via DM or you can visit our website www.mungbeanhealth.com. So I want you to really take away that you are going to prioritize naps, dim the lights in the evening and have an early night and get off your phone.
00:06:22
Speaker
I know it's so hard and we doom scroll so much, but turn off your phone at 8.30pm nine o'clock, get yourself into bed. If you need to read a paperback book, go for it. Your body is literally constructing life, which is so amazing. So resting isn't lazy, which I wish that so many mums could hear this and probably something I can tell myself a lot of the time, but rest is not laziness, especially in the first trimester, anytime really. But in that first trimester, your body's doing so much. So don't let anyone tell you different.
00:06:54
Speaker
Now, how to survive the nausea and the food aversions. This is a big one because obviously it can be really debilitating for people. Obviously, there's different conditions like HG, which is different. It is like morning sickness on steroids where you're vomiting multiple times a day.
00:07:13
Speaker
Even some of my clients that have had HG, they start to think about the certain types of food and how that's going to feel on the way up because they know they're going to vomit that back up, which is absolutely heartbreaking to even be thinking like that.
00:07:26
Speaker
But it can lead to so many different mental health issues along the way as well. So, HG Mamas, you guys are amazing. I have had so many HG Mamas. And what I say with that is prioritize getting in early with naturopathic support because there's so much we can do to restore your nutrient levels before falling pregnant. And I have had multiple HG Mamas that have had HG pregnancies before me and then with me. And they've always said that when they've worked with me and with Mungbean Health, they've had better experiences in their pregnancy
00:08:00
Speaker
and less of the HG symptoms that are associated. So heaps we can do. But the nausea and food aversions, it's still unconfirmed exactly what it's from. They think maybe a genetic issue they've linked it to, but also obviously the hormones. So our rising HCG and estrogen, blood sugar fluctuations cause an issue.
00:08:24
Speaker
Also, we're a lot more sensitive with our smell and our taste. And you'll find if you have experienced any of that nausea or even without it with the food aversions, you will normally love a food. And then when you're actually going through pregnancy, you will hate it.
00:08:39
Speaker
And then usually you come back good afterwards, but it can take a little while. Like your favorite meal might not be your favorite meal anymore, but it's just all part of that process. Some women, there's some unicorns out there that don't get any nausea or sickness at all. I do experience morning sickness, which usually is in

Balancing Cravings with Nutritional Needs

00:08:56
Speaker
the morning actually for me, but not for everyone. Some women have all day sickness or they just have it in the evening, but I've got a lot of tools up my belt that I can actually support myself with, which I can definitely help you with as well. Mungbin, love helping.
00:09:11
Speaker
pregnant mamas, especially surviving that first trimester. Also gut health as well. So the gut actually slows down its motility and movement due to that hormone progesterone, which actually makes you feel fuller and more nauseated, unfortunately.
00:09:26
Speaker
There are a couple of little things you can do. So basics, you have to be very mindful. that there are a lot of studies coming out about B6, the unactivated form, causing issues like neuropathy. So I usually recommend only take that if your practitioner has prescribed it, and they should be giving you an activated form that's not going to have that issue.
00:09:45
Speaker
But there is a lot of women that find that is amazing for reducing nausea severity. But yes, make sure you get the right supervision for that one. ginger. Now, HG mummers will roll their eyes at ginger because obviously their condition is very different than morning sickness, but ginger's amazing.
00:10:04
Speaker
You can get it fresh, you can grate it, put it in teas or warm water, you can literally eat it, chunks of it if you like. You can grate it into food, cook with it, whatever that looks like. There's also capsules that you can get.
00:10:17
Speaker
We also use the capsules a lot to actually help it get down because some women just hate the taste, which is understandable. Everyone's different. But ginger's actually been shown in multiple different clinical trials to significantly reduce nausea and vomiting.
00:10:30
Speaker
It's also beautiful for our digestion and It's a warming herb. It's got so much more going for it. And ginger doesn't hurt. So you can definitely try that. We also have some beautiful herbs up our sleeve. One of them that I have been using so much of in a little beautiful blend, which is in a little drop. And I've just been dropping that on my tongue most mornings when I've been feeling nauseous. And it just takes away that vomit feeling, that nauseous feeling. In Western herbalism, ginger, peppermint, and spearmint have all been used for centuries to settle the stomach, while herbs like chamomile suit the digestive tract and anxiety associated with morning sickness.
00:11:05
Speaker
We also need to make sure that we are emptying the bowel every single day. I find women that are constipated from hormones, unfortunately, they usually are not actually passing through and clearing out those hormones, and they'll normally feel sicker.
00:11:19
Speaker
So very important for us to be working on that bowel, but we will work on that for you. Food-wise, really go with what you can, but small, frequent meals that are rich in protein and complex carbs help to actually stabilize our blood sugar. So that is very important for us.
00:11:36
Speaker
Cold fluids like lemon water or electrolyte-rich coconut water. or electrolyte drinks that are safe in pregnancy can be a bit easier to tolerate than just plain water.
00:11:47
Speaker
So definitely something that you can look into. You also want to with food, a focus on foods that you can eat, not necessarily what you should be eating. So as a naturopath, I recommend for you to be having a really diverse plate.
00:12:01
Speaker
In the first trimester, it doesn't always look like that, but you can still tick off some of the boxes. In early pregnancy especially, your body prioritizes protection and food aversions are nature's way of avoiding certain types of pathogens and toxins.
00:12:16
Speaker
Studies show that women with nausea tend to have lower miscarriage rates, likely due to higher hormone levels. But once your appetite returns, focus on nutrient densities.
00:12:28
Speaker
So what you can try and do is get in like folate rich foods. Think dark leafy greens, avocado, which I've been loving at the moment, lentils, asparagus as well. Some of you might turn up your nose to that at the moment, but just do your best.
00:12:44
Speaker
Iron rich foods. So like grass fed red meat, cooked lentils, pumpkin seeds, zinc, chickpeas, eggs, And then magnesium as well, very important. So nuts and seeds and leafy greens.
00:12:57
Speaker
Many traditions actually call this phase still that rooting phase. So favoring grounding foods like broths and slow cooked meats and cooked vegetables, so good. The slow cook was so good. I know it's hard when it's a bit warmer, but so good for that digestibility. Cold salads and raw foods are limited to protect digestion.
00:13:16
Speaker
This is, if you feel like salads and cold foods, go for it, please. But If you're only feeling like warming, easy, digestible food, then definitely opt for those. You really just need to try and pick nutrient-dense foods, but things that you can eat. Now, don't get me wrong. I have had a bowl of chips for dinner in the first trimester when that's the only thing that would go down. Heavy on the good quality salt, though.

Essential Nutrients and Supplements for Pregnancy

00:13:42
Speaker
Thankfully, my mother-in-law cooks some good potato chips just with potatoes. But honestly, ah would have had fries if I needed to. But obviously, we don't want that to be a long-term thing. We just want to be short just as, again, survival, essentially. Also, just circling back to the resting and the fatigue,
00:13:59
Speaker
really important that we work on your iron levels. I actually love working on iron levels prior to pregnancy because at times in the first trimester, when we're taking an iron supplement, it can actually make us feel a bit more nauseous, which we obviously want to avoid.
00:14:14
Speaker
So really just listening to your body and honoring your body and eating warm, simple and familiar foods that you know you enjoy. You also want to try and do some gentle movement. Now, this might be the last thing that you feel like doing, but getting yourself outside in the fresh air, light movement improves circulation, lymphatic flow and endorphin releases as well. This actually reduces stress and constipation, which is so common in that bloodstream.
00:14:39
Speaker
pregnancy because of our progesterone. So moderate exercise like walking or prenatal yoga, make sure that you're doing the right type, lowers rates of gestational diabetes and depression without increasing miscarriage risk, which is so amazing. Exercise is so important. Movement was seen as essential to prevent stagnation back in the day and it should still be now, especially in traditional naturopathic and Chinese medicine, gentle daily walking, stretching.
00:15:08
Speaker
People honestly forget how good just some stretching at home is. And breath work are really good to just support our overall pregnancy. So really making sure that we are aiming for 10 to 15,
00:15:20
Speaker
or 10 to 20 even minutes of gentle movement most days. Morning sunshine is also amazing. It helps with our vitamin D synthesis and really does support our circadian rhythm. So making sure you're getting outside in the morning light before it's too hot and let it touch your eyeballs.
00:15:36
Speaker
And that is just really supportive. Now, there are so many important key nutrients to focus on in the first trimester because, again, you're literally growing a human. It is so important.
00:15:49
Speaker
Actually, one that always is forgotten is calcium. You're literally growing a skeleton. You need lots of calcium and you still got to keep enough for yourself. So that is something that I'll often prescribe. Also, folate, activated form of our folic acid,
00:16:04
Speaker
is really important. As we know, folate, the activated form of folic acid, prevents neural tube defects, supports DNA synthesis. So even if you have been taking folic acid or methylated folate, 5-MTHFR, something like that, it's so important prior to if you can, but definitely in the first trimester and throughout pregnancy.
00:16:25
Speaker
But the neural tube actually closes in the first trimester. You can actually get this naturally though as well. I don't think that it is enough in the ah Western diet, but you can add this like on top of. So dark leafy greens, so liver, but I'd recommend making sure that you get that prescribed from your practitioner. It is really great for fertility and pregnancy vitality. We've also got our iron levels.
00:16:48
Speaker
So we want to support that red blood cell production for growing the blood volume. As I said, pretty much goes to an additional 50% by the end of pregnancy.
00:17:00
Speaker
They do say it doubles, but I know it's very high. We can actually get this through red meat, beetroot and molasses is used to actually build our blood.
00:17:13
Speaker
We've also got our omega-3s. Now I love our omega-3s. You can obviously get this through fish oil, eating it fresh, but also I prescribe this in clinic, but you have to get good quality fish oil.
00:17:27
Speaker
I cannot stress it enough. So how many women will get the crap stuff from the chemist and it's just not it. Unfortunately, a lot of the oil can already be rancid before it gets in the capsules, which is just ridiculous. You're spending your money.
00:17:39
Speaker
You want to be spending it on good quality supplements. That's why we only use certain practitioner only supplementation, but really good for supporting baby's brain development, eyes, nervous system development, as well as mom's hormone health and brain. We often use choline. It is so important for again, bub's brain development, mom as well. um So a really nice blend between the DHA and the choline is ideal. Which choline you can get from eggs, that's a good option.
00:18:08
Speaker
And eggs getting good pasteurized, free range, organic, biodynamic eggs is a good option. We've also got magnesium, really good for overall health, using over 300 functions in the body.
00:18:21
Speaker
So I guess we could say over 600 when you've got a growing human. Maybe not that many, but it has actually shown to ease nausea, support anxiety, muscle cramps, especially when used with B6. But again, only from your practitioner.
00:18:35
Speaker
Certain types of herbs are great here, but we do use supplementation for magnesium. Also really good quality. Dark chocolate is a good option and dark leafy greens. And then we've got probiotics, often overlooked in pregnancy.

Emotional Challenges and Mental Health Support During Pregnancy

00:18:49
Speaker
Honestly, we use specific strains that are great for mom and bum.
00:18:53
Speaker
You're growing an entire GIT or gastrointestinal system. You need enough of these good guys in there to give them a good support system, great for their immune system, and also for mom, can actually help to reduce gestational diabetes risk.
00:19:06
Speaker
So certain types of fermented foods you can enjoy, miso, keffiyeh, sauerkraut, all traditionally used for gut balance. And again, preconception is ideal. There's so many more nutrients that are really important as well. If you're low in iodine, we need enough of that. But I think if you're getting a good quality preconception, prenatal, it's going to cover a lot of that.
00:19:27
Speaker
Obviously, then we do testing with our clients to see, okay, there's other nutrient deficiencies here we need to work on like vitamin D. That's why I mentioned it's important to get yourself outside and get in the sun because really important for hormones and bub's development as well as mom's as well. And important for that thyroid.
00:19:43
Speaker
Bub uses ours. So we have to have our own thyroid use and also use it for bub for the first six to 12 weeks of the baby's life. So very important that we support that. And this is why we see a lot of women that will have thyroid issues postpartum, like postpartum thyroiditis, which can cause so many issues and just ruin your beautiful postpartum.
00:20:04
Speaker
So good to get a jump on it early. But if you do have postpartum thyroiditis, you've already got it. Don't stress. There's so much we can do to support you. Actually love supporting the thyroid. Then you've also got the emotional toll that it can play. Again, HG mamas are going to struggle.
00:20:18
Speaker
with their mental health. And a lot of women that have HG don't really know it in the first trimester, like especially if they haven't had a baby before, they usually just think this is what it's like with morning sickness, but it's not always the case. Unfortunately, that can bring up a lot of that anxiety and depressive feelings. If you are struggling with depression and you're having like low mood and you're really finding that you're not coping, please seek help.
00:20:45
Speaker
There are so many beautiful options out there. Obviously talk to your midwife, your care provider, your naturopath, but there's certain types of helplines as well, such as Panda, which is a great one, 1-300-726-306. Then you've Beyond Blue, 1-300-22-4636. And there's couple of others like Lifeline well, which 13-11-14. Okay.
00:21:05
Speaker
um and there's a couple of others like lifeline as well which is thirteen eleven fourteen If you are struggling, please do not hesitate to reach out to any of these beautiful support systems and get yourself set up on a mental health plan with the doctor, the GP, so that then you can get support with counselors or psychologists just to support you through.
00:21:27
Speaker
There's so much we can do naturally with herbs and nutrients to support you through. But yes, really important note there. Hormones like progesterone and estrogen alter our neurotransmitters, especially GABA and serotonin, which is our happy hormone, and GABA is our calming hormone, increasing emotional sensitivity.
00:21:45
Speaker
And let me tell you, when you're feeling like crap and you're struggling in the first trimester and there's still so much asked of you like whether that's your work whether that is your other kids you feel like you're letting everyone down please just know that you're not alone and you will get through this even for those in a hd pregnancy you will get through this it feels like you'll never get through it but you absolutely will mindfulness based stress reduction different types of programs in that in pregnancy have actually been shown to lower perceived stress and cortisol levels, which is so amazing. I love that.
00:22:18
Speaker
Also certain types of calming herbs and you can do a little bit of aromatherapy, but we also do internal herbs depending on the case and the person in front of me, but they can be used for that mind restlessness.
00:22:32
Speaker
Certain types of rituals like journaling and gentle breathing or breath work is a beautiful way to nurture the womb. And if you have unfortunately experienced loss before, whether that be pregnancy loss, like baby loss, infant loss, miscarriage, stillbirth, if you had to terminate for medical reasons, so many different ones here, chemical pregnancies, so many unfortunate loss scenarios.
00:22:58
Speaker
And if I haven't mentioned yours, it's still absolutely valid. then this makes the next pregnancy, like pregnancy after loss, so much harder. And I should actually do an episode on this because I've been through it. This will be my second time going through pregnancy after loss. And it is a lot. And naturally the anxiety rises, whether it's debilitating or not, it still can be there.
00:23:21
Speaker
i have had two pregnancies prior to loss. And now this is my second one post loss. And Yes, it was very different prior to loss going through pregnancy. And your mind can spiral. You can get those anxiety spirals. So making sure that we're reaching out for help when we need it. Obviously, my clinic deals with a lot of loss and a lot of moms that come to us when they have experienced loss.
00:23:45
Speaker
So it's nothing new to us. And we know we have lots of tools in our tool belt of how we can help you. But there are some amazing little ways that we can really create micro moments of peace throughout the day. So deep breathing before bed. Or one thing I like to say to my clients is get yourself outside in nature, stare at a tree, take a couple of deep breaths. It's amazing how much that supports our nervous system. Also things like gentle prenatal yoga or Pilates, or even having a bath, not too hot.
00:24:15
Speaker
and having some beautiful lavender oil or putting some lavender oil on the shower floor. Be careful not to slip, but that is another beautiful option of just really being mindful. The journaling is lovely here and gentle breathing, but really just like leaning into yourself and just knowing I can do hard things. Affirmations are beautiful. I can do hard things.
00:24:36
Speaker
I will get through this. This too shall pass. Just like when we're having contractions, we know that we can get through it and we will

Naturopathic Support and Personalized Health Guidance

00:24:44
Speaker
get through it. So definitely booking early support is very important, even in preconception care. That is ideal. Early care can reduce pregnancy complications and actually improve outcomes.
00:24:56
Speaker
So research shows women supported by certain type of multidisciplinary practices and teams, GP, midwife, naturopath,
00:25:08
Speaker
have lower rates of anxiety and improved nutrient status. As I said, so many women will experience a pregnancy before they come to see us. And then when they see us, they feel so much better. Like I have so many moms that'll like, I can't believe I can feel this good postpartum. Last time I was in a heap, I was a mess.
00:25:28
Speaker
And now I am bouncing around and I feel like I could have a thousand babies. So it is really beautiful when we get to see that. Also, having that beautiful naturopathic approach and that naturopathic support is so amazing because we actually support you through each trimester. So once you fall pregnant, a lot of women will see us for preconception, but once you fall pregnant, that is not the time to quit naturopathy. You're actually to support yourself throughout.
00:25:53
Speaker
If you've just started and you want to fall pregnant, amazing. That's a huge part of it. We also want to maintain that healthy pregnancy and we want to support you throughout each trimester. um So continue throughout each trimester because nutrients change.
00:26:06
Speaker
We'll do testing to make sure that we're on top of everything for you. It's all about foundation building, balancing blood sugar, addressing nausea, supporting the thyroid, as I said, and adrenal health.
00:26:17
Speaker
and any other things that pop up throughout. You might see something like, for instance, in my first trimester, I actually had a hematoma. i actually have had this for my last two pregnancies, actually.
00:26:28
Speaker
Funnily enough, only after loss, which is interesting. They said that sometimes that can happen if there is a bit of a scar tissue or something on the side where the placenta starts to grow, something like this.
00:26:40
Speaker
And I have been able to dissolve it both times in the first trimester. When it does stay, that's when it becomes a part of the problem. So many things we can do. And then obviously when we do start to get closer to the end, we can prepare you for labor. It's actually my favorite consultation to have. Preparing you for labor, getting you ready to go through birth again or for the first time, making you feel empowered and ready and just allowing you to have that beautiful experience.
00:27:07
Speaker
And then on the other side, that early postpartum, supporting your breastfeeding journey. It's so beautiful. It's actually my favorite thing. And I still get goosebumps over supporting women through this. You don't have to wait to feel awful. A lot of women just come and see us and they're like, I feel like absolute crap.
00:27:23
Speaker
Can you help? Yes. You don't have to be feeling like crap to come and see us. Reach out early for that beautiful personalized guidance. Everyone's different. You and your baby are different than everyone else. So we need to support you on that journey. And it's all going to be very individualized after your consultation.
00:27:38
Speaker
And if you haven't been to a naturopath before, amazing. Please reach out. We'd love to walk you through it. We love seeing you for whether it's you're already pregnant and initial consultation, ah we have some great preconception bundles on our website that you can package together some testing and consults and supplements as well. So there's a couple of different options there.
00:27:58
Speaker
