Sing along if you know the words. One, two, three, it's time for animation, deliberation, a conversation and a celebration of our favorite action animated series. Yeah. Yeah. Hello. Oh, I thought you were doing the intros.
00:01:04
Speaker
No, I just want to do the first thing. Oh, OK. Gotcha. OK.
Pixar's Signature Blend of Humor and Emotion
00:01:07
Speaker
Welcome back to Animation Deliberation, the podcast that takes action animation and cartoons seriously, but not too seriously. I am J. Scottie St. Clair.
00:01:17
Speaker
I swear, not taking this seriously. Well, it's fitting, you know. Pixar has a way of tugging at the heartstrings, but I'd say it's a little more lighthearted and you get more laughs out of it than the content we typically cover maybe outside of, like, MODOK. Is your heartstring on your back that makes you say things you're not supposed to be like Woody?
00:01:44
Speaker
There's a snake in my boots. There's a podcast in your ears. There's a review for you to read.
00:01:59
Speaker
But seriously, we do have a five-star review. We had our month-long review contest in which we had a winner announced, PurpleLama63, hit up the guys at the Marvel Cinematic Universe podcast for that. But let's get into one of the five-star reviews we got for animation deliberation. Zuhair, do you have one selected for us?
00:02:21
Speaker
Yes, from Cody Guf. We got a five star review saying, I'm an adult that loves animation and this is the perfect podcast to feel justified in my love. I'm enjoying listening to the Young Justice episodes and it, ah, excuse me. I'm enjoying listening to the Young Justice episodes as I'm rewatching to gear up for season four. Thank you for joining us on that venture and thank you for taking your pride in how wonderful animated content is.
00:02:47
Speaker
Yeah. Cody, you are the man. And I can say that with the utmost confidence because you told us you are an adult. So it is factual. You are the man.
New Perspective on Buzz Lightyear
00:02:57
Speaker
Thanks for that stellar review.
00:03:00
Speaker
Okay, so we're going to be covering our initial impressions, our reactions to the very first teaser trailer for Pixar's light year. We're basically taking the character of Buzz Lightyear. We know in the Toy Story films, he is a very popular action figure that has an entire franchise that surrounds him. So this is going to be taking a look at the man that inspired the action figure.
00:03:27
Speaker
as well as the franchise and I'll go ahead and say I remember seeing Toy Story in theaters back in like 1995. So Toy Story has been one of those franchises that's been near and dear to me for a long time. So I actually recall there was a previous effort
00:03:43
Speaker
to explain Buzz Lightyear's background. And that was in a cartoon that came out in like 1999, 2000 called Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. They did a whole direct to home video, and then a short lived animated series. So it looks like this is taking that and throwing all that out the window and forging ahead with a new origin, but had to mention that. Yeah, you can, you can ask my mom, I've
00:04:09
Speaker
Worn out the VHS with the amount of times I have watched this movie on loop. I Love it extensively. I was really excited when they were when they announced that they were doing something with lightyear I was intrigued when they picked Chris Evans for it and like Jay Scott. He mentioned that the Buzz Lightyear star command I Remember really enjoying the show. I remember absolutely loving the movie The movie was really good because it was just so intense like right out the gate so
00:04:37
Speaker
If I love that movie in 2000, I don't know how I'm not going to love this movie. Like just from the I'm just going to go right
Animation Comparisons: Lightyear vs. Star Wars
00:04:45
Speaker
into it. Like from this teaser, like I don't need to see any more. I want to go straight to the movie. It is so, so, so detailed. Like it could be real life with giving the the source material
00:05:01
Speaker
design. It's a healthy hybrid of both. Everything that we loved about Bad Batch, how it honored the Clone Wars style, but it was just so realistic and so detailed. And it looks stunning. And speaking of Star Wars, it has Star Wars vibes. There's one scene where they look like they're on Dagobah and they look like they're in Coruscant, but them traveling through space and the ships and the emotion and
00:05:25
Speaker
just looks like this is going to be very well rounded as Pixar is. It looks like there's going to be good story, good comedy, good emotion and heart and action.
00:05:40
Speaker
I was looking forward to watching it when they announced it. I did not expect to be this engrossed to the fact that I saw it. This is what got me out of bed yesterday. I was just so exhausted. I passed through so many alarms. I picked up my phone. I saw Lightyear Trail. I was like, all right, cool. Watched it. I have a three-hour time difference from J. Scottie.
00:06:04
Speaker
I was like, I don't care if you're asleep. I don't care if this wakes you up. I was like, we need to do a reaction video. I don't know why I'm so into this, but oh my God, am I sold like it looks so, so, so, so good. Yeah, I'm right there with you. It was a like a minute and 30 second teaser, but I 100% agreed. I don't need to see any more. I am fully on board for this. I think the bad batch comparisons are very apt just in terms of like the fidelity and the quality of these renders and the designs like
00:06:34
Speaker
you're saying it all looks like it could be real life outside of like the cartoony features in the face and whatnot the rest of it like the fabrics and the different materials as you're looking at the interior of the ship and just the way the light hits his visor and everything it's so visceral and the world feels lived in and the other comparisons just to star wars like i feel like it is embracing like the best like
00:06:57
Speaker
science fiction adventure movies we've already gotten. It made me think of Luke Skywalker on Tatooine when we get that opening shot showing the desert facility where they're doing this test flight. It actually even reminded me of the 2009 Star Trek where the young James Kirk is out there in the desert looking at the enterprise being built off in the shipyards. It felt a lot like that.
00:07:24
Speaker
It starts off, I think the trailer did an excellent job because it starts off very grounded and reality based and it seems like just a pilot conducting this test flight, but when he gets on the other side of that, that's where you get to start to see the more galactic and cosmic things like he has encounters with aliens. It looks like there might be some time travel elements, which it makes sense why they cast Chris Evans.
00:07:48
Speaker
He's got some experience doing that kind of thing. But yeah, I'm super excited. And when you get the reveal of the classic suit that he wears with the green on the chest plate and the wing suit and just seeing that adapted for an actual functional suit and seeing all the different components was like, oh, so, so good. I can't wait to see him suit up.
00:08:13
Speaker
I'm actually trying to find his quote. Ah, all right. So one of the posts that went up is, the phrase a dream comes true gets thrown around a lot, but I've never meant it more in my life. Evan said in his own statement, anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep.
00:08:37
Speaker
I can't believe I get to be a part of Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else. Watching them work is nothing
Chris Evans and His Role in Lightyear
00:08:46
Speaker
short of magic. I pinch myself every day. This is the guy who got to play Captain America. Yeah. And this guy that people are spooning over left and right is talking about how much he loves animation and how much it means to him.
00:09:07
Speaker
I can't even like respond to that like that is amazing that is so amazing because like this type of constant yeah excuse me this type of content
00:09:24
Speaker
gets talked down on so much because it's animated, but like, look who's vouching for it right now. Captain America himself. He's 40. Yeah, I think Pixar, as opposed to some other studios and animated properties, they exist outside of that a little bit. They are kind of like, pretty much everybody loves Pixar unless, you know,
00:09:52
Speaker
there's something wrong with you. I'm kidding. I know there are people out there, as far as too cutesy for, but by and large, Pixar tends to speak to the masses. And yeah, I agree with everything you're saying about Chris Evans. We saw his level of commitment and how he just truly embodied
00:10:09
Speaker
the role of Captain America. And that's kind of the reason that he had to step away from the role is because he was so committed to it. It takes a toll on your body having to stay in that kind of shape. So it is nice. I know he's voiced his desire to kind of be behind the camera a little bit more and involved in more of the filmmaking. So it is really refreshing to hear that he has such a passion for animation and that we can continue to get great performances from him, even if they are just vocal performances. There are a lot of reasons that you don't
00:10:37
Speaker
pick Tin Allen to come back, not to be Aegist or anything like that, but just he's been voicing, you know, the toy version of Buzz for so long, it only kind of makes sense that as we step outside of that version of the character, we really embrace like a
00:10:57
Speaker
an actual man like and in this trailer it does make me wonder what kind of story we're going to get in terms of like heartbreak and what his purpose is because I think of the one shot where he's like looking out the window and there's like rain on the window but the shirt that he's wearing says property of star command and
00:11:13
Speaker
I think that's why they pick a guy like Chris Evans. He's got that experience being this man that's struggling with what his
Exploring Buzz Lightyear's Character Depth
00:11:20
Speaker
destiny is. And when you've got like a name like Captain America, Steve Rogers, or Buzz Lightyear that's larger than life, what does the man with the actual feelings and emotions behind that, how does he deal with that? That's some of the stuff that gets me really excited. Of course, I'm super excited for the action as well. It looks insane.
00:11:39
Speaker
Yeah, this this really is a different story. And while you can't replace Tim Allen, this isn't the same Buzz Lightyear and it deserves a different set of emotions.
00:11:58
Speaker
a different profile, a different build that we need to experience for the first time. There's a lot that we love about Buzz Lightyear, but this is not going to be that same Buzz Lightyear. This truly is something new. And they're definitely embracing all the best things about it. And I hope we do get to see a lot of what we love about that short-lived series in the movie.
00:12:29
Speaker
again like I was excited that Chris Evans was doing it because Chris Evans was doing it and even though he didn't have any dialogue in this trailer like even his grunts and jumps and squeals and stuff like I was sold with that alone
00:12:44
Speaker
Yeah, I think it's and of course, I don't know what it is with Disney with not letting Chris Evans like save the most popular catch phrases in the world. Yeah. It took us 10 years to hear. I mentioned Semple and now who knows how long it's going to take to hear to infinity and beyond. We got A and B. Somebody joked in the Stranded Panda chat saying Cowabunga is probably going to be the next one if he plays Michelangelo. But well, he actually he was in one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies, the animated one that came out in 2008.
00:13:12
Speaker
Fantastic. He didn't play a turtle. I think he was Casey Jones in that one. Actually, no, he might have been a turtle, but anyway, not to get too in the weeds on that one. I'm sold in his performance and then his tweet, it hit me in the feels. I'm ecstatic. I can't wait for this.
00:13:35
Speaker
Yeah, I'll be excited to see what's through lines from the animated series and series as well as the movie that they choose to take with them as well as the Toy Story films. The one nod that I picked up on is they show the crystalline fuel source for the test flight there. And there was a line of dialogue in Toy Story like Buzz is like, oh, are you still using fossil fuels or have you discovered crystalline fuel or what have you?
00:14:04
Speaker
Spoilers for Toy Story, I imagine everybody's probably seen at this point in time, but even in Toy Story 2, they do the whole fully leaning into Star Wars. They make it seem like Emperor Zurg, who is Buzz Lightyear's arch nemesis, that he is very much like Darth Vader. It's like, you killed my father. No, Buzz, I am your father. No. I don't think they're going to do those things, but it might be interesting to see why that was misconstrued that way.
00:14:33
Speaker
I don't know if I want to see Zerg in this first one, because I feel like they're going to do multiple. But if they do, I kind of want it to be like Vader in Rogue One, or Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy, where they have just of a menacing appearance to establish the character for future projects. I'd be OK with that. I do think he's going to appear just based on this trailer, though. There was a moment where you saw a door start to open. I don't want him to be the main villain.
00:15:01
Speaker
Okay, I don't want to be the main villain. I want him to be referenced and have some dialogue But I don't know if I want them to interact at all and I don't want him to be the main villain I want that to be like a later thing
00:15:14
Speaker
Okay, well, I'd be open to that. We can get a rogues gallery for Buzz going. I don't know if I have anything else to say about the minute and 30 long teaser trailer. I'm definitely excited, but I know we've got some feedback, so if you're ready to start addressing some of that, I'm ready. I know, I'm gonna cry. That's the last thing I'll say. Yeah, it does seem like it's setting it up for potential heartbreak and tugging of heartstrings again.
00:15:43
Speaker
Yeah, we had a few lengthy emails. So thank you so much, everybody who wrote in. And thank you for each for the first time we got someone send a voice memo in. So we're going to play that for you.
00:15:58
Speaker
Hi, my name is Arish, and I am submitting my reaction to the new light year, Buzz Lightyear movie. Okay, just to preface, I saw the trailer three times, basically the teaser trailer, I guess. I didn't watch any breakdowns, nor did I like read about it or anything like that. So I'm like completely fresh. This is like basically the first experience that I've had.
00:16:25
Speaker
So the first thing I thought was OMG Chris Evans is in space again. I could not help but make a bunch of Marvel slash Avengers connections. So I'll definitely share a couple of those but OMG is in space again. And at the end they left us hanging again so instead of staying to infinity and beyond.
00:16:48
Speaker
he didn't say the beyond part, just like he didn't say the assemble part of Avengers Assemble. I don't know, it makes me think that maybe this is not the only lightyear movie that we're gonna get. Maybe they're trying to hint at the fact that there will be multiple because, you know, he said Avengers in Ultron but then didn't say Assemble till many movies later in Endgame. So who knows? Also, I think Disney knows what they're doing with Chris Evans because the man killed it. He's so good at it. Okay, so now for the actual trailer.
00:17:18
Speaker
Um, this is a totally different vibe than Toy Story because I feel like a lot of us, especially those of us who grew up with Toy Story, um, and now since then they made like a Toy Story 4, which is newer than the first Toy Story. It's, it's totally different. Like I honestly, if I'd never seen Toy Story, I wouldn't have recognized
00:17:43
Speaker
Buzz Lightyear as an action figure. And I don't even think in Toy Story he really was an action figure. He felt like a toy. So this is basically an origin story, which is obvious. But it kind of was a little confusing because I have always thought of Buzz Lightyear as a toy. But it's definitely refreshing to be like, oh, there's the story behind the man.
Listener Feedback: Lightyear vs. Toy Story
00:18:12
Speaker
In reality, I haven't seen Toy Story in a really long time, so I don't remember what he said about his life, but it's interesting. In general, though, it looks very beautiful. I love all of the space imagery, all of the scenes, and everything is very bright and fresh, except for when he's in actual space, I guess, when they show that little
00:18:38
Speaker
camp type of thing that he's living in if like that's not earth or if it's an older slash newer version of earth that was really like orangish and brownish so i was interested in seeing like what that um distinction is going to be like because like this is a teaser trailer like there were barely any words spoken um
00:19:01
Speaker
Also, they gave a lot of importance to his iconic Buzz Lightyear suit by having that scene where he enters to it. Again, iconic suits, I guess for Simmons, again, Disney really knows what they're doing with him. I'm curious to see who the villains are going to be. Is it going to be people on Earth, or is it going to be aliens in space, or is it going to be different planets?
00:19:27
Speaker
Or is there no villain? Is this just like Buzz Lightyear trying to find himself in this program? It seems like he's a part of either a group or a program because there is someone else who is wearing the same suit, the same iconic Buzz Lightyear suit. So is it a group? Is it an army? What are they fighting? That's all of the questions that I have.
00:19:47
Speaker
Also, are they on Earth? Like, is this Earth? Are they going to Earth? Are they trying to find a new place to live? Are they escaping something? I don't know. Lots of questions. And then, who else is in this movie? I was very curious, since there was only a couple words spoken. But regardless of, I'm very excited. I hope that this was helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions. Okay, thanks. Bye. That was awesome. Yeah.
00:20:13
Speaker
Yeah, great feedback. I feel like there were some similar sentiments that echoed of what we said. But one of the main things that stuck out to me is when she mentioned the lack of spoken dialogue there, there was actually only one word uttered by Chris Evans. He didn't even say the to infinity part. All he says is and. And. Other character, she says to infinity.
00:20:36
Speaker
Yeah, I'll be curious to see those questions she brought up. Is it Earth that they're going back to? He does do that whole kind of reminiscent of Interstellar, where he kind of slingshots around the sun. And it seems like when he comes back around the other side, the terrain has changed significantly, which I think she referred to when she was talking about some of those brown and orange hues. But outside of that, yeah, it remains to see what kind of threat they're going to be facing if it's
00:21:05
Speaker
a mission to find a new home planet or resources to make Earth more sustainable or an outside force. Yeah, we'll have to wait and see.
00:21:17
Speaker
Yeah, because in Toy Story, he has the dialogue of, you know, I seem to be on a planet with no intelligent life. So at that point, it's like, does he know he's on Earth or oh my god, just looked over and realized there's a Buzz Lightyear figure on my Funko shelf. Nice. Sorry, I just had to point that out.
00:21:38
Speaker
Is he aware of Earth? Does he know of Earth? Is this Earth and then trying to find something else? Or is it just a desert planet that they're operating out of? So that is a big question of like, is Earth even a factor? Is it like Star Wars where it's like, there's human looking creatures, but they're not earthlings per se. When she mentioned like, who is the villain?
00:22:04
Speaker
That made me start to wonder because I already said that I don't really want Zurg to be the villain, but like I'm wondering if he's like. Like a cadet trying to prove himself. Like if there was a situation where like other space Rangers got caught up in something while exploring a planet and then he had to like take over. Or he like took it upon his own hands, which is why like we don't see him in a suit, but he's like looking at the suit.
00:22:35
Speaker
Hmm. Yeah, I'm not sure it like, like I said I have strong vibes of like time travel things so I wonder if it's one of those situations where like everybody else that was like in his training facility like they've already gone on and he was kind of like the one entrusted to
00:22:52
Speaker
be the last one to go and kind of make sure things at the facility were maintained. And he does the final flight out there to catch up with the rest of the team. And when he gets to the final destination, maybe things didn't go as expected. That's kind of what I'm extrapolating at this point in time, but there's really not a lot to go off of. I think they're all good questions.
00:23:14
Speaker
I know it's a Pixar movie, but they could get some good horror vibes or something like that too. Just going missing. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. And we get the one little alien tentacle, which his reaction to is pretty shocked. So it seemed it kind of, I get the vibe that it's his first exposure to alien species. So that's what's making me think that he is coming from earth.
00:23:36
Speaker
Yeah, could just be an Earth like planet. Yeah, do we want to move on to the next piece of feedback? Yes. Thank you so much for sending in your voice. It was awesome being able to hear the excitement and enthusiasm as we're portraying as well. Thank you so much. Yeah, I encourage other listeners. Yeah, feel free to submit your
00:23:56
Speaker
extended feedback via voicemail. Next one, Erica Donaldson. Thank you so much for writing in. She says, Hey guys, the trailer was visually aesthetic. I'm a huge nerd for the progress that Pixar has made over the years and light years, no disappointment to see where they were back in the late eighties up to 1995 and how far the quality has come since this is mind boggling.
00:24:20
Speaker
I'm so much more excited than I thought I would be and I'm genuinely ecstatic to see a story about the man that inspired the cartoon and toy.
00:24:31
Speaker
Yeah, it really is cool because I was just kind of IMDb the first Toy Story and was just looking at like the clips, just the little screencaps compared to like how detailed Lightyear is.
Pixar's Evolution in Animation
00:24:46
Speaker
Oh, yeah. It truly is a world of a difference. Like to see something that we grew up with, you know, that we recollect in our earliest memories at our age and to have an upgraded version of it is just wild.
00:25:01
Speaker
Yeah, I'm kind of wanting to like do an edit now. I want to take that clip from the 1999 film where Woody's kind of berating him like, you are a toy. And then just kind of cut to like the Chris Adams was like, he was like, clearly not a toy. He's a man like he said he was. No, but it is just like everything you're both speaking to Erica as well as yourself. Just the fact that like, who would have thought that a
00:25:31
Speaker
computer animated film about toys that the, not even the arguably the main character, the secondary toy in that toy story would go on to create such a, just a visually stunning piece of work just in this trailer. Like we're oohing and awwing over it. And just to think of it's humble beginnings is pretty impressive. And I kind of chuckled to myself, but it's a fun world we live in.
00:26:04
Speaker
Man, Chris Evans was like 10, 15 when this came out? Sounds about right. Wow. Wow. Time is weird. Yeah, yeah. There's no way he could have known when he went to go see that movie, when he eventually saw it. All right, we have some more feedback, as I understand.
00:26:33
Speaker
Yeah, next one is from Yoda Hugh. I don't know why I said it like that. It needed to be said like that. Hello, cellmates. This trailer, with the exception of Buzz themselves, looks brilliant. I don't know. I needed an origin story of Buzz Lightyear until now. What does the big red button do? It looks different. Buzz's face looks weird, but I think it's more realistic looking style of the animation against a classic Toy Story style.
00:26:59
Speaker
Chris Evans is going to be great in this role. It's basically Captain America IN SPACE! Much love, guys. YodaHoo, aka James, aka SirCheesyBeans.
00:27:10
Speaker
the cheesy beans as a new moniker I wasn't aware of. I feel like James said what we've all been kind of skirting around with all these comparisons to Captain America, but it really does feel like Captain America in space in a lot of ways. So with the character model, it is
00:27:37
Speaker
It works for me, but the first time you do get that reveal of the full body, it is just kind of interesting to see these unrealistic proportions just manufactured to such a high level of detail. There is just a second of adjustment, but it's impressive the level of detail they've gotten just with the hair and just the texture to the skin. It's unbelievable.
00:28:04
Speaker
I don't know if you saw the abomination that I posted yesterday, but it's Buzz Lightyear's head on Chris Evans' characters from Knives Out when he's wearing that nice sweater sitting in the booth, but off of his fingers like a mini mule. That looks so ridiculous, but made me laugh so hard when I saw that yesterday. That's funny. That's funny.
00:28:31
Speaker
Well, I mean, there's so many people that are like, what did they do to Chris's face? I'm like, nothing. It's Buzz Lightyear. It's not Chris Evans. Like, sure, they put like his eyes and his charisma in there. Like, you got to be true to the character. Yeah. Yeah. My character's got a big face. Get over it.
00:28:49
Speaker
But it is interesting even though he like clearly it is Buzz Lightyear's face. It is interesting like how much of like Chris Evans and Cap like they were able to like infuse just in the eyes and then the hair. Right? Yes. I love it so much. Yeah. It never clicked to me like how much Buzz's head was covered. Like I was wondering why I was so fixated on his hair. I was like was he bald before? Like why am I why am I so focused on his hair right now? And then it clicked to me that
00:29:19
Speaker
His head's actually covered. He's got that purple flight cap on pretty much at all times. In regards to the button, the button before made his face shield go down, but I don't think it's a button anymore because in a battle sequence you could accidentally hit that and then you would start suffocating. So I feel like it actually is a push and turn mechanism more than it is. Because it looks like there's a little bit of a knob on it.
00:29:44
Speaker
Hmm like it looks like it's turnable. So I'm wondering if it's like to actually like push and turn for like a full oxygen seal That's that's gonna be my guess for it. Yeah, I could stand a reason or Was the was the button exclusively for his visor? I'm trying to remember what the like the action on his wings work as I remember his wings had like a retractable action one
00:30:09
Speaker
So I'm looking at the toy right now. He's got a red button on his left chest and three buttons on the right. And I think one of the other ones was for the wings. If I'm not mistaken, it was the big red one that was his visor. Okay. Well.
00:30:28
Speaker
Either way, I do think there'll be logical explanations for every piece that we see on there. And I have to imagine when he finally does take flight for the first time, it's going to be a pretty epic and impactful moment in the film. Oh, the big red button on the left would deploy his wings in jetpack. The show is never consistent with the three buttons on the right, but it was portrayed as toggling between radio channels. Okay. My mistake.
00:30:58
Speaker
No worries, no worries. Do we have some additional feedback to address? Yeah, we got two more. Okay. I'm gonna take a sip of water for Mr. Andrew Rogers over here.

I don't know why he was shy and not sending me a voice message. I asked him to, but no. We love having Andrew on the show. I like teasing him too, so thank you so much for this wordy feedback. All right. Hey, y'all. Here's my lightyear trailer, lightyear teaser trailer, instant reaction for you guys.
00:31:39
Speaker
Altogether, I am both more excited for this and yet still a bit perplexed as to where this is going. I wasn't sure of the specifics of the movie beyond that it was going to be the backstory of the man they based the toy on, and this trailer doesn't do too much to clear that up. That said, however, this trailer is absolutely stunning. The animation is the classic strength that Pixar has always shown to us, and it looks just beautiful. The outer space, ships, and equipment all looking amazing.
00:32:08
Speaker
while still keeping to the cartoony look that I grew up loving. In addition, watching this and seeing the detail of skies, backgrounds, planets, and every piece of both metal and cloth is just a testament to the level of detail that Disney has put into this one.
00:32:23
Speaker
The only thing I know will take getting used to is the fact that Buzz isn't plastic and is instead a real person, but they still did a really good job with his and all the designs around him, especially knowing that they had to work backward up, but it did have a lot of serious tone but
00:32:41
Speaker
Excuse me. I did have a lot of serious tone to it between the music, lighting, and lack of dialogue. Again, no complaints about the style as it was beautiful to say and the way it looks reminds me of serious space movies like Interstellar or Martian. The look at futuristic robots and spacecraft seems fun and leaves me hopeful that they will lean into the comedy of the characters and figures
Chris Evans' Impact on Buzz Lightyear's Character
00:33:06
Speaker
cross that we get from the characters from the past that I love, maybe even some mention of the characters from the 2000 Buzz Lightyear of Star Command TV series, but I will settle for Little Green Men and or Evil Emperor Zerk.
00:33:18
Speaker
I am excited and hope that they make this another Pixar knockout as they add to the Toy Story saga, but I'm coming out of this with a few expectations as I went in to let them surprise me as opposed to being let down with too much childhood fantasy. This is especially true knowing that the huge shoes Chris Evans is having to fill, and hope that the spirit of the character isn't too far off from the toy version of history.
00:33:44
Speaker
Regardless, I know that animation deliberation will have a field day talking about how amazing this movie will look as I don't think I can say enough how it is looking like it will arguably be one of Pixar's most artful and mosaic movies yet. Can't wait to hear both of you. Excuse me, I cannot read today. Can't wait to hear both of you think about this as well as the Panda community as a whole. Cheers from your resident anime enthusiasts, Andrew Rogers.
00:34:13
Speaker
Yeah. Andrew has a profound appreciation and a ability to pick up on small details. So, um, yeah, he should have, uh, had the encouragement to, to call in and, and voices his thoughts, uh, vocally, but nice to get that, that lengthy piece of, uh, feedback there. And yeah, I can't agree more. It looks like it's going to be definitely a,
00:34:43
Speaker
I'm struggling on exactly how I want to say this because Pixar has already garnered quite a bit of acclaim for themselves. They've, you know, won numerous awards and they're always in awards discussion when the award season rolls around. But this one really seems like it has the opportunity to just attract like almost an entirely different fan base, I feel.
00:35:07
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, I feel like in regards to design like Zootopia, actually, no, that's more Disney than Pixar. Oh, that's Disney animation. Yeah. Yeah. But Zootopia as Disney kind of set a standard for like the level of detail that animation could be with them like actually making like every individual hair follicle on every animal.
00:35:30
Speaker
And this is fully embraced that and more like this is really meeting the line between fantasy animation and real life detail. Yeah. And it is it really, really is going to raise the bar like with how much we praise Bad Batch for the level of detail that that got. I think more people are going to have an appreciation for what
00:36:01
Speaker
animation can do once they watch this film. Yeah, yeah. And I like the comparisons Andrew made to like Interstellar and The Martian. Like I mentioned Interstellar myself, but The Martian didn't really come to mind, but I think that's a really good one. And I think in terms of like the story that it decides to tackle, like it has to know its audience base. Yeah, everybody is going to go see Lightyear, but I think they know that their target audience were probably people that saw
00:36:29
Speaker
Toy story when they were very young and they've like grown up with this character And so as they've grown up with this character and this characters finally be being portrayed in a more realistic light It's ready for that mature tone and we've kind of talked about like thinking what the story is gonna be about and suspecting that the heartbreak is gonna be there but I think it may it may have like a story that resonates just as much as like something like interstellar or the Martian so I'm hopeful and here's the thing
00:36:58
Speaker
It's the people that watch the original that's going to be the primary demographic. They're going to be taking their kids. Of course. It's just wild to imagine like.
00:37:15
Speaker
There is a stereotype with adults that don't want to watch animated stuff. So it's like, how much do parents interact with their kids on the content that they're consuming, right? On the cartoons and stuff that they're watching. It's like, yeah, my kids watching Paw Patrol and this and that. They know of it. They watch some of it. But to actually watch this as a kid,
00:37:40
Speaker
and then take your kid and both of you guys have the same like being on the same wavelength of like how amazing this is it's just so beautiful yeah in that regard it could be star wars for a whole new generation yeah all right well i think we said we have one more final piece of feedback one more let's do it from Courtney O'Brien
00:38:08
Speaker
Hey Zoo and Jay Scotty, thought I would share my thoughts on the Lightyear trailer. From the first shot, this film looks set to deliver a visually beautiful offering. We only got a snippet, I can't wait to see how creative they get here. I am really keen to see this other version of Earth, with Star Command being the likely NASA stand-in of the world. I wonder when this will be set, as far as a Toy Story timeline goes, or if they will retcon and ignore it altogether.
00:38:36
Speaker
I like that Buzz looks like the Buzz we know, but a more human version of him. Familiar, but a more mature aspect. They've nailed that. Prepare for my awkward thirst when cat voice confuses me into finding Buzz attractive. Please send vocal feedback for that.
00:38:58
Speaker
that's funny continuing from my understanding this character is the inspiration for the toy buzz from toy story while lightyear will be its own film i hope that there is room to expand on the world we've only seen from so far from andy's and his toys perspective we love our continuity in world building i'm also hoping for a few callbacks pizza planet a planet of pizza
00:39:23
Speaker
References to Toy Buzz's weapons buttons and seeing them in real life. Maybe Real Buzz has a favorite toy as a child. Here's hoping they get the balance right. I'm definitely super excited to see Lightyear and I didn't realize how nostalgic I was for the Toy Story franchise. Got me feeling all the things. Thanks for reading this. Keep up the great work you're doing. I'm enjoying receiving my animation education and a lot of laughs along the way. Much love, Courtney Obie.
00:39:53
Speaker
Thank you so much, Courtney. Courtney is one of the, I don't wanna play favorites or anything like that, but she is really just a great panda. She's very active in the community and always has a kind word and thoughtful take on whatever content's being covered. So definitely appreciate you. And she's actually bringing up some points that I think are pretty unique that we haven't heard in any of the other feedback. We all just kind of are operating with the assumption that, yeah, it's gonna pick up
00:40:21
Speaker
right with what we know with Toy Story, but I guess there is the possibility they might just throw that out the window and it's just like, hey, we know Lightyear exists, just take that with a grain of salt and this is more loosely based on that. I guess that's entirely possible, they might want more creative freedom.
00:40:41
Speaker
Yeah, I like that perspective that they're just kind of taking the general character of Buzz, but like his early stages, I like that she thinks it's on Earth and it's going to be like a NASA type thing.
Future Possibilities for Lightyear Series
00:40:55
Speaker
I'm thinking the the Star Trek movie trilogy where they're just kind of like exploring planets, but not supposed to intrude in any way.
00:41:07
Speaker
I would love to see a planet that's just pizza, that'd be beautiful. And yes, as MCU fans, we love our continuity. I personally feel like, I'm kind of speaking for you, that we want this to be a bigger thing, not just a one-off. They could easily make something off of this and they could build on it and have more characters and more world building for us to care for. And I'm all for it.
00:41:34
Speaker
Yeah, I know. Likewise, I think there are a lot of different opportunities on the subject of pizza planet. I would absolutely love that as well. And if we could get some reference to the claw in some capacity, just even if it's just on earth, just doing something basic. Yeah, that'd be great. But in terms of just like the potential. Talking about MCU cannon and spinning it out, I'm taking that
00:41:59
Speaker
and doubling it up with some of the things she's talking about in terms of other references to Toy Story. I don't know if this is something I want necessarily, but as much as a post-credit scene could lean more into what's going on with Zerg or even show those little three-eyed aliens that talked about the claw, what if the post-credit scene is just Woody? And we get to see that Woody is getting his own realistic Western.
00:42:28
Speaker
Right? Yeah. Yeah, could be. Can Robert Downey Jr. play him? Might as well, right, at this point. Honestly, it would be Chris Pratt. You think? I think Chris Pratt would make a great Woody. I'm not mad at it. He was in the Magnus Vincent 7, right?
00:42:55
Speaker
Like just picture him saying, reach for the stars. Well, he was playing Mario, so he's going to get a lot of experience voicing different types of characters. So yeah, maybe Woody's his next role. Will he do good at it? Remains to be seen.
00:43:15
Speaker
Now, if y'all wouldn't mind, send in an email of which MCU character you'd want to play. Woody, I'd love to hear what you guys have to say for that. Yeah. Likewise. Likewise. Maybe Buzz had a favorite toy as a child. That's intriguing. Like there was a toy that was just a robot or Slinky or something like that. But like, that'd be cool to see. Yeah. Not bad. Not bad.
00:43:43
Speaker
Or I'm actually now I'm getting like really crazy in the weeds here, but I'm thinking back on Andy. Like we always saw his mom. Did we ever see his dad? No. What if his dad is Buzz Lightyear? That's why his dad's gone. His dad had to go on a flight mission and he. Chris Evans is his dad. I don't know. Yeah, not very likely, but like I said, he could have been an astronaut in some sense.
00:44:10
Speaker
Yes, yes. But I do think just tying it back to some of the other points Courtney brought up as well as yourself, comparing it to NASA as well as the early days of Star Trek and the Federation, I think that's where my mind is leaning as well.
Speculative Plot Elements: Time Travel and Beyond
00:44:26
Speaker
Talking about that time travel again, I really think what's going to happen is there is a
00:44:31
Speaker
team like earth might be in dire straits like looking for some kind of resource or alternative or what so they send one by one or in groups of whatever these Rangers to the future and then buzz will be the last one to go and when he gets to the future it's going to be a very different future than what he expects and like everyone's already interacting in a much more galactic capacity but just my my speculation
00:45:02
Speaker
I just had an epiphany. Oh, yeah. Yeah. When I said that his dad was probably an astronaut or something like that. It reminded me that Buzz Aldrin is an astronaut. Buzz Lightyear is named after him. 28 years later. I understand.
00:45:24
Speaker
It's all good. It's all I like to live in my little childish world. Like those who don't know, who don't know me, like I get very enveloped in like what I'm watching. So stuff like this, like really goes over my head because I don't know if I'm just like so stressed out with like life as it is that when I get really invested in something like I'm just locked in things, things like this will go over my head if it's like intruding like what I meant to be focusing on.
00:45:54
Speaker
No, I don't think that's the biggest flub in the world. So I wouldn't sweat it. Yeah. That being said, I think we're all very excited for this thing. And, uh, did we get, I need to look back at the trailer. Did it say when to expect this thing? 2022 summer 2022. So sooner rather than later, yeah. We'll probably be getting, uh, I imagine probably around the super bowl, they'll probably do something a little more.
00:46:24
Speaker
Robust. Oh yeah, maybe. And on the, on the cast of IMDB, Chris Evans was the only one that's on there. Okay. Yeah. So we're going to get some revelations. We had that friend that he did the fist bump with, and then just in the montage there, I remember seeing somebody that looked like they were more of like a ranking military officer that might have not been a fan of buzzes, but it's kind of hard to tell with the very little context we got.
00:46:51
Speaker
In the Daegaba looking world, he had a little droid next to him too. I wonder if he's going to actually have dialogue. If we're having like our own version of C3PO or K2SO. Yeah. Yeah. Could be. Could be.
00:47:12
Speaker
All righty, well, I think that's everything I've got to say. So once again, thanks to everybody that was kind enough to take the time to submit your feedback. We will certainly look forward to discussing more of Lightyear in the infinity and beyond. That wasn't as smooth as I wanted it to be.
00:47:37
Speaker
Well enough from my friend. So yeah, keep tuning in. That's T-O-O-N-I-N. Stay well.
