Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of the daily Manchester United podcast. I'm your host and only attendee on this podcast following the two on victory against Palace at the weekend early kickoff on on Sunday in Sellers Park 12 o'clock. I mean Definitely one for the for the early risers on a Sunday. Not used to a kickoff time like that. But um yeah, sunny, sunny morning, sunny afternoon in ah in South London. So it was.
00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And yeah, I mean, it wasn't pretty, but we came away with the three points and definitely got ourselves back on track from a points perspective and going back up the table again after a pretty dismal performance against Everton in the previous game in the Premier League.

Lineup Critique and First Half Challenges

00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Definitely happy to to see us get three points in that one. But as I mentioned, still an awful, an awful lot to do, an awful lot to improve on. And definitely wasn't convincing.
00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
im Not convincing at all, I suppose. And I wasn't too inspired by the lineup. I mean, we had Jaro, De Ligt, Shaw on a back line. We'll speak about Jaro a bit later on. But then we had Ahmad on right wing back who...
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Ahmad and Bomo have a good kind of relationship on the right-hand side, so wasn't too disappointed with that. But then, look, we have Dalo starting in left wing back again, and we saw just the...
00:01:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
the lack of ability really on that left-hand side when he came on against Everton. And it's similar enough during the game against Palace at the weekend, you know, anytime it comes down the left-hand side, we just don't look threatening at all. It's slow. It's lethargic.
00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's no appetite to take anyone on because, you know, you have to come back inside and and lay it off and go around the horseshoe again. So um yeah, it wasn't the most inspiring um choice on the left-hand side. And then we had Mason Mount, Mbwemo and Xerxi up top as well. And to be honest, the first half, it was tough going. It was tough going from a United perspective. Palace were very good, created an awful lot of chances. Sar was dangerous in behind. Mateta had a good few chances as well. um And eventually that chance came and Jaro just got caught completely on the wrong side.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
and was a bit clumsy, to be honest, and just kind of clattered into the back of Mateta. um And it was a clear penalty. There was no no arguments or or no kind of excuse at all for it, really. It was just he got caught and he nibbled at Mateta, and it was definitely a clear penalty. So Mateta stepped up and and absolutely buried it, but did notice that he he clipped it off his left foot and before the ball actually went into the net. So rightly so, it was called back.
00:03:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mateta then stuck it into the other corner and sent him on the wrong way again. So, you know, it wasn't looking good, to be honest. There was very, very little sign of any sort of good patterns of play from United at all in the first half. I mean, I spoke about Dallo going forward, but the only time we actually looked threatening was from a long throwing from Dallo and hoping for flick-ons and and getting a couple of opportunities. And Casemiro had a good opportunity just a few minutes into the game, but yeah, it was, uh, it was a pretty, pretty dismal first half and and it was, it was not looking good at all. Um,
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know We just couldn't seem to get any rhythm into the game at all. ah Xerxes, the ball was kind of bouncing off him. It wasn't really able to hold it up too well. um Like I mentioned, the left-hand side is just quite dead and and slow, so we weren't going to create anything on that side. and And anything positive that was going to happen was going to be through Bruno and Mbwemo on that right-hand side and hoped that we were going to create something out of nothing, really. Yeah.
00:04:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
and it was, it was difficult. and And at that stage, you know, watching the game, I didn't really have too much hope for the second half. It was, it was a pretty tough watch. And, uh, you can imagine that the tension and the pressure was really, really building up on, on Ruben Amram there going into halftime and, uh, and things needed to change. I mean, we spoke an awful lot about,
00:04:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Everton game and going down to 10 men go everything, going down to 10 men, you know, 20 minutes into the game and just the structure of the team never changed. The mentality of the team never changed. And, uh,
00:04:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
we ended up not being able to create enough and didn't get a goal. And, you know, you were kind of concerned about this, you know, because Palace are a better team than Everton really, and have been stretched, I suppose, with the European football over the last while, but definitely have a lot of quality on the pitch and the midfield as well with...
00:05:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
with Wharton and Kamada, two really, really good technically players, and they were bossing the midfield in that first half, and it wasn't looking good. um But thankfully, there was a reaction in the second half, and definitely not a sustainable way to play and to go about our matches, but there was a reaction definitely, which was which was a positive take out of it.

Second Half Turnaround

So we'll take a quick break there, and we'll be back with a bit more analysis from the second half at Sellers Park.

We mentioned that we needed a reaction in the second half and to be fair, we definitely did did get that. um you know the The actual standard of play hadn't improved that much, but at least we had a little bit of and ingenuity from from Bruno from a free kick, clipped it into that near post for Xerxes to run onto he took it really well got across the the defender took it on his chest waited for it to come down and then buried it with his left foot straight into the far bottom corner and it was a great strike normally you see a lot of strikers you know rush that shot and look to get it away a bit earlier but he did kind of he did take his time with it and did get it into the far corner and was ah it was an excellent finish and i was really happy for him you know I thought
00:07:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
he He kind of suits this system well when we have a very attacking number 10s who will go in behind. So you know if we had Mbwemo, if we had Cunha, who would you know be willing runners in behind when Xerxes comes short, I think he's a good enough ball player to to link up play really well. He can be a good target man with the ball at his feet for Bruno to kind of fizz it in. And then we have the number 10s playing off him. So there's a lot of kind of positives that Xerxes has, but he hasn't started an awful lot of games. When he has played, all of his appearances have been mainly off the bench. So...
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's been difficult difficult for him to get any sort of rhythm at all. and Playing Hoyland was the preferred striker last year. Sesco has been the preferred striker this year. Mason Mount, Cunha, they've all been preferred over Xerxe. So to get you know two two games in a row of of starting, um hopefully he can find a bit of rhythm. But I was really happy for him. um And you could see just a bit more confidence running through his veins then after that goal.
00:08:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it kind of lifted the whole team as well. um They were chasing down a lot harder. They were being a bit more um cohesive in their press. um just a like Just a lift of energy all around, really, and which was really positive to see. But it shouldn't take you know a goal to lift us like that. It it should be from the start, and and we shouldn't even be falling behind in these situations. We should be able to have that mentality from the start of the match and and be able to maintain it throughout. But...
00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just where we're out where we' we are at at the moment. I don't think we can ask for too much else. The quality it is not there, obviously. and The system is still up for judgment, whether we're getting the best out of the players or whether the system works a lot of the time. um But then, once again, we get another free kick. A quick bit of thinking from Bruno,
00:09:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Crystal Palace are all over the place in terms of their their wall setup and Henderson is still trying to sort it out a quick layoff to Mount and I don't even think Mount was expected he kind of had a jolt to run onto it and then struck it decently and it was an incredible strike if if Henderson was kind of more prepared he probably would have saved it but I think just catching the wall off guard catching Henderson off guard a bit it snuck into that into that bottom left hand corner and there we are 63 minutes gone And then we're kind of hoping, OK, hopefully we don't just sit back and try and hold it. Hopefully we can kind of maintain a bit of possession and and keep the ball a bit and try and see this game out. And we had a couple of you know positives. We had Martinez come on for Luke Shaw, really filling in at that left um left of the back three, which I think will be kind of a a mainstay in there now. So happy to see him back after a long And doubt of injury. Obviously, Masrawi came on for Yaro as well, um just straight after the the first goal. So Yaro wasn't the best day at the office for him, but Masrawi, very um competent player coming in there in the back three as well.
00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we had kind of late substitutions from Dargu and Menuh just to kind of see out the game. But, um you know, there was a couple of kind of half chances from Palace towards the end. um We didn't create much else either, I suppose. But it was one of those kind of ugly matches that...
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
We were delighted to come out three points, but yeah, it it's definitely not a sustainable way to win matches. And I'm not sure of how much United really did well in that game. ah So I wouldn't be taking an awful lot of

Match Conclusion and Reflections

00:10:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
positives out of it. But I suppose the mentality to come back into it and and to try and get the team back on track again and get a couple of goals when you're not playing well.
00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's always important to do that moving back up the table as well. Um, it's not the worst thing in the world, but yeah, like I said, things are going to have to, going to have to continuously improve here because at the moment that, uh, yeah, it's, it's not been great. It's not been great. And, uh, I think it's pretty clear that the things definitely need to improve. And, you know, we, we thought we were on a bit of a run there,
00:11:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
for a while where we had that kind of five unbeaten and then, you know, the big setback against Everton to bounce back. It's good. You know, we're back up into seventh place, um, you know, tied on points with Liverpool, one point behind Brighton and Sunderland, two points behind, uh, or three points behind Aston Villa and Chelsea, you know, the, the, the league is so tight. Um,
00:11:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there's a great opportunity for us to kind of kick on here, but it's it just everyone's been dropping points. Like, it's just so tight in amongst that. And if you do get a bit of a run of games together or victories, it could be really, really effective for us. But um yeah, let's just see what happens. And and hopefully we can kind of kind of continue that and and kick on from there. But Yeah, that's a bit of a reaction from the game. Obviously, we have another Premier League game coming up at the weekend. We'll be able to have some more podcasts this week to try and get a bit of a run up to that game. And yeah, I'm sure we'll have some predictions in there as well. So as always, thank you very much for listening.
