Introduction to Solarpreneur Podcast

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fail.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you how to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.
00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solopreneur, you might ask?
00:00:33
Speaker
A solopreneur is a new breed of solopro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery, and you are about to become one.

Health Challenges in Solar Industry

00:00:41
Speaker
Hey, what's up, solopreneurs?
00:00:42
Speaker
Today we're going to talk about how to make door knocking healthy again, how to make solar healthy again.
00:00:48
Speaker
Hey, if you're listening to this at the time of the recording, you know Trump just got elected.
00:00:53
Speaker
Let's go, baby.
00:00:54
Speaker
And...
00:00:56
Speaker
you know, love him or hate him.
00:00:58
Speaker
It was a landslide victory, but he recently, I guess, named Robert Kennedy Jr. as his guy over health, I think over secretary of the health department.
00:01:08
Speaker
If you've been listening to it, the whole motto was make America healthy again.
00:01:12
Speaker
So it just got me thinking so many solar guys are not healthy.
00:01:17
Speaker
So many guys are just grinding, not taking care of the body the way they should.

Sales Industry Habits and Health

00:01:21
Speaker
So today we're going to talk about how can we make solar healthy again.
00:01:25
Speaker
Hey, let's get into it.
00:01:25
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:01:26
Speaker
We're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and have a much better time in the solar industry.
00:01:33
Speaker
Hope you're closing lots of deals.
00:01:35
Speaker
Hope you're having lots of success and hope you are...
00:01:38
Speaker
getting used to selling in the dark, knocking doors in the dark, if you're knocking doors.
00:01:43
Speaker
And making that adjustment was a little bit tough for me, just getting used to being out there in the dark, addressing people's concerns that I'm out when it's past dark.
00:01:52
Speaker
But hey, we're getting it done.
00:01:53
Speaker
And we'll probably do extra episodes on that.
00:01:56
Speaker
We might do some content on working in the dark.
00:02:00
Speaker
But today it's going to be all about how can we be healthier as a solar industry.
00:02:06
Speaker
And so my first experience to the whole door to door industry in general came in 2012.
00:02:14
Speaker
Many, you know, I started in pest control and I got out there.
00:02:17
Speaker
I was 18 years old at the time.
00:02:19
Speaker
18, I think you kind of eat whatever.
00:02:23
Speaker
You're not too concerned about the health.
00:02:25
Speaker
I could pound whatever food, really cheeseburgers and wouldn't affect me too much.
00:02:31
Speaker
But I just saw the culture of pest control.
00:02:34
Speaker
Guys were grinding for a summer.
00:02:36
Speaker
I think it came down to like two schools of thought where there were two different types of people.
00:02:40
Speaker
There were guys that would just like constantly eat junk all day long, go to the gas station, get candy, fast food.
00:02:48
Speaker
I was selling in Texas.
00:02:49
Speaker
We had this place.
00:02:50
Speaker
It was like a pizza buffet called CC's Pizza Pizza.
00:02:54
Speaker
Shout out to my Texas people.
00:02:56
Speaker
You probably have seen those around.
00:02:57
Speaker
I think they're still around.
00:02:58
Speaker
And it was like, I think it was like five or six bucks at the time for just all you can eat pizza.
00:03:04
Speaker
So we would just pound pizza, just stuff ourselves because that was our one meal.
00:03:09
Speaker
And then we'd go back out, hit the doors.
00:03:12
Speaker
We'd come back, we'd eat frozen burritos.
00:03:14
Speaker
We'd eat more frozen pizza.
00:03:16
Speaker
And that's just how it went.
00:03:18
Speaker
And definitely gained weight over the summer.
00:03:21
Speaker
You know, didn't feel great looking back.
00:03:24
Speaker
And, you know, combine that with the extreme intake of energy drinks, caffeine, guys just down in coffees.
00:03:31
Speaker
Yeah, it gets a little out of control.
00:03:33
Speaker
So hopefully if you're listening to this, hopefully you're a little bit better than I was when I first started.
00:03:38
Speaker
But I have learned some lessons over time.

Establishing Healthy Habits

00:03:40
Speaker
And I think part of it is as you get older, not so young anymore, 31 right now.
00:03:45
Speaker
And so as you get older, you start to notice that, hey, if I eat like three frozen pizzas tonight, I'm going to feel super bloated.
00:03:53
Speaker
I'm going to feel terrible in the morning.
00:03:55
Speaker
I'm going to be on the toilet half the morning.
00:03:58
Speaker
Probably not a good idea.
00:04:00
Speaker
It wasn't necessarily like that when I was younger.
00:04:02
Speaker
So if you are a younger guy or gal listening to this podcast, then just know maybe you can treat your body that way right now, but it's going to change quickly.
00:04:13
Speaker
And I would recommend just start to get some good habits in place right now.
00:04:17
Speaker
And just to preface this before we get into a few points here, I'm no health expert.
00:04:23
Speaker
We probably should bring on some health experts.
00:04:26
Speaker
But I've talked to guys that are super healthy.
00:04:29
Speaker
I've tried quite a few diets myself, done a lot of workout plans.
00:04:34
Speaker
And so I consider myself, I would say, above average healthy person, no expert.
00:04:40
Speaker
But I want to share some things that I've learned over time just being in door-to-door
00:04:45
Speaker
mistakes I've made, lessons I've learned.
00:04:48
Speaker
So let's get into a few different points

Sleep and Performance Tips

00:04:51
Speaker
here.
00:04:51
Speaker
Okay.
00:04:51
Speaker
And so the first one is just stick to a schedule as much as you can for sleep.
00:04:58
Speaker
And especially, you know, as you're younger, this is another thing.
00:05:01
Speaker
A lot of people, they're out partying on the weekends.
00:05:04
Speaker
They're pulling all-nighters, you know, Saturday, Sunday.
00:05:07
Speaker
You come buying alcohol in there.
00:05:09
Speaker
It's just a recipe for disaster.
00:05:11
Speaker
Okay, so cut out the alcohol.
00:05:13
Speaker
Cut out the partying.
00:05:15
Speaker
If you're going to be in door-to-door in solar to last, you need to embrace the weekends.
00:05:20
Speaker
And I would just cut out all partying, all alcohol, really, if you're going to be in this career, in this industry.
00:05:27
Speaker
But if you are doing that, it's like you need to shift your schedule.
00:05:31
Speaker
The weekends, those are our prime times, right?
00:05:34
Speaker
Friday, Saturday, I take Sunday off, but some guys work Sunday.
00:05:39
Speaker
These are when people are home.
00:05:40
Speaker
It's when people are out and about.
00:05:43
Speaker
It's when you should be catching people and it's when you should be having the most appointments with homeowners, right?
00:05:48
Speaker
Because they're actually home.
00:05:50
Speaker
But if you're staying up all night, if you're partying, it's not going to be great.
00:05:54
Speaker
Okay.
00:05:54
Speaker
Either you're not going to be working as much as you should on the weekends or you're
00:05:59
Speaker
just going to feel terrible on appointments.
00:06:01
Speaker
You're not going to be able to close deals as effectively

Energy Management for Sales Reps

00:06:04
Speaker
otherwise.
00:06:04
Speaker
So point number one is just cut that crap out.
00:06:07
Speaker
Stop the partying.
00:06:08
Speaker
Stop the alcohol.
00:06:11
Speaker
Stop going out on the weekends.
00:06:13
Speaker
Like, you know, it's okay here and there, but don't be pulling the all-nighters.
00:06:17
Speaker
And if you are going to go out or whatever, it's like,
00:06:20
Speaker
You know, this is the life you got to embrace.
00:06:22
Speaker
Do it during the week as much as possible.
00:06:25
Speaker
Hey, I would shift it to guys are going to take time off.
00:06:28
Speaker
Take, I don't know, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, one of those days off.
00:06:31
Speaker
But weekends, you got to embrace them.
00:06:33
Speaker
Okay.
00:06:34
Speaker
And then stick to a schedule for sleep.
00:06:36
Speaker
Right.
00:06:37
Speaker
So if you're going to stay up later, I what I've learned is don't don't deviate from your typical sleep schedule by more than like an hour if you can, because it's just going to mess with things where it's going to take longer to recover.
00:06:51
Speaker
So try as much as you can.
00:06:52
Speaker
Stick within an hour of your regular sleep schedule.
00:06:56
Speaker
Point number two, limit the caffeine.
00:06:59
Speaker
Hey, when I, you know, got into solar too, in the beginning, we would have guys passing out energy drinks, passing out coffees, passing out Adderall.
00:07:11
Speaker
Hey, Adderall was like, you know, there's still teams I hear about where it's like, they're like, everyone's on Adderall.
00:07:18
Speaker
So, so it's not going to be sustainable long term.
00:07:22
Speaker
It's one thing if you actually have ADD, most of us, and a lot of sales guys, we got ADHD.
00:07:28
Speaker
And so Adderall is kind of like a lot of guys do it in solar.
00:07:31
Speaker
But so many people I started in solar and it's like so many people on my team.
00:07:36
Speaker
I remember looking back, they couldn't even sell if they didn't have an energy drink in Adderall.
00:07:41
Speaker
They couldn't sell.
00:07:43
Speaker
And I think it was this like mental balk they put on themselves that they needed those things.
00:07:47
Speaker
They had to have them and they became almost dependent on them.
00:07:51
Speaker
So I don't do any energy drink occasionally.
00:07:55
Speaker
I would say maybe once every two, three weeks max.
00:08:00
Speaker
So it's like the point is just do it in moderation.
00:08:04
Speaker
Don't become dependent on this stuff.
00:08:06
Speaker
I do not think that you should have to have an energy drink to go out and sell.
00:08:10
Speaker
If you're tired, then there's this crazy thing you can do.
00:08:14
Speaker
And this might be controversial for some of you.
00:08:17
Speaker
But you can take, it's called a nap, right?
00:08:20
Speaker
Take a nap.

Introduction to SolarScout App

00:08:22
Speaker
So some of you already know that I run my own door-to-door sales team here in San Diego.
00:08:27
Speaker
And as we were gearing up for the summer, I realized if we do the same thing we always did, we're going to get the same results.
00:08:33
Speaker
But if I want to increase my deal flow, I need to do something different to get an advantage.
00:08:38
Speaker
Then we discovered an app called Solar Scout.
00:08:41
Speaker
But it's not a door knocking app.
00:08:42
Speaker
It's a data platform that shows us who is likely to go solar in our market.
00:08:47
Speaker
It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later canceled the deal, who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood.
00:08:56
Speaker
It's been working for a lot of teams across the country, and now I'm on board too.
00:09:01
Speaker
I'm going to be one of the first to use SolarScout in San Diego, so I decided to partner up.
00:09:05
Speaker
But I told them, hey, I'm going to talk about SolarScout on my show.
00:09:08
Speaker
You need to give my listeners a great deal, and they did.
00:09:11
Speaker
So go to solarscout.app forward slash Taylor and book a demo with them, and you'll get 10% off your first month when you sign up.
00:09:21
Speaker
That's solarscout.app forward slash Taylor.
00:09:24
Speaker
Okay, back to the show.
00:09:27
Speaker
And some sales managers might be listening to this and be like, dude, that's crazy.
00:09:33
Speaker
Don't be telling my guys to nap.
00:09:35
Speaker
But you can take a nap in your car.

Hydration Tips for Sales Reps

00:09:38
Speaker
And I was hesitant to even bring this point up.
00:09:42
Speaker
But one of what I consider the top dudes in the industry, Ryan Allen, buddy of mine,
00:09:50
Speaker
makes over a million a year, just self-gens, I think does about 200 installs a year, self-gen.
00:09:58
Speaker
One of the top guys, he tells me he takes naps all the time in his car.
00:10:03
Speaker
He'll pull over, take a little snooze, get back at it.
00:10:06
Speaker
Yeah, I'm not saying sleep half the day.
00:10:07
Speaker
I'm not saying stay up all night, then nap in your car half the day.
00:10:12
Speaker
But if you're tired,
00:10:14
Speaker
yeah, just pull over, lean the seat back.
00:10:17
Speaker
I've taken naps in some crazy places and yeah, occasionally you'll get some crazy neighbor clinking at the door wondering what you're doing, but
00:10:26
Speaker
Most of the time, nothing's going to happen.
00:10:27
Speaker
All right.
00:10:29
Speaker
And so we got two, three other points here.
00:10:31
Speaker
Make sure you stay till the end.
00:10:33
Speaker
The last one you probably haven't heard of and a little bit interesting.
00:10:36
Speaker
So you're going to like it.
00:10:38
Speaker
But the last three points here is number three, stay hydrated.
00:10:43
Speaker
This one's a sleeper.
00:10:45
Speaker
Like so many people, they're not staying hydrated or they are drinking energy drinks.
00:10:50
Speaker
They're drinking soda, whatever.
00:10:51
Speaker
They're not hydrating themselves.
00:10:54
Speaker
And if you're not hydrated, you're fatigued, you're getting headaches, you're not thinking clearly, just so many things can be traced back to being dehydrated.
00:11:04
Speaker
And the first thing I think, if I'm tired, if I have a headache, I would say 90 plus percent of the time, it's because I haven't drank enough water.
00:11:13
Speaker
And this is something that took me a long time to learn.
00:11:15
Speaker
You ask anyone that's roomed with me in college.
00:11:19
Speaker
And the joke was I would wake up in college, the house we were sharing, we were sharing a house.
00:11:25
Speaker
This was back in 2012.
00:11:27
Speaker
And I would, I would pee and my pee would come out like practically neon, just like so dark, so neonish just because I was not drinking coffee.
00:11:39
Speaker
water at all.
00:11:40
Speaker
And I remember one time one of my roommates saw, I don't know if I forgot to flush the toilet or whatever.
00:11:46
Speaker
And he was like literally concerned because my pee was so dark.
00:11:50
Speaker
He's like, dude, do you ever drink water?
00:11:52
Speaker
I'm like, uh, no.
00:11:54
Speaker
And this time I didn't carry around water bottles.
00:11:56
Speaker
It's just like, I'd walk around the college campus and
00:11:59
Speaker
maybe drink at a drinking fountain every once in a while, but that was it.
00:12:03
Speaker
So I think the biggest secret for this is just carry around a water bottle, right?
00:12:08
Speaker
Get yourself one of those insulated bottles.
00:12:10
Speaker
You can get the knockoff brand off Amazon, super cheap.
00:12:14
Speaker
You can get the Stanley cups, whatever.
00:12:16
Speaker
Get something that you feel good about carrying around.
00:12:19
Speaker
carry it around, keep it cool.
00:12:21
Speaker
You can put some little drink mixes, whatever you need to in there, but just stay hydrated.
00:12:26
Speaker
If you carry around the bottle, you're probably going to drink it.
00:12:28
Speaker
So that's the secret.
00:12:30
Speaker
Number three, stay hydrated.

Healthy Snacking Strategies

00:12:32
Speaker
Hey, and then the last few things on here just goes without saying, but don't be eating junk food all day.
00:12:40
Speaker
Don't be eating fast food all day.
00:12:42
Speaker
I would recommend getting like a snack bin.
00:12:45
Speaker
I think I've done a few episodes on this about some of my favorite snacks for door knockers for solar guys.
00:12:51
Speaker
But just get some healthy snacks, put them in your car.
00:12:54
Speaker
Then you don't have to be running the gas station.
00:12:57
Speaker
Taylor McCarthy, he always talks about getting like a big cooler drinks he puts in his car.
00:13:02
Speaker
Yeah, you can do that.
00:13:03
Speaker
You can get put stuff in there, keep your food, food cool, but just get snacks.
00:13:08
Speaker
You know, I get like the hard boiled eggs.
00:13:10
Speaker
You can get a bunch of these at Costco, like the big packs of hard boiled eggs, the beef jerky, the protein bars, the protein shakes, so many different healthy, high protein options.
00:13:21
Speaker
It's going to keep you high, full.
00:13:24
Speaker
It's going to keep your, your muscles growing.
00:13:26
Speaker
It's going to keep you looking good out there.
00:13:29
Speaker
help you stay confident.
00:13:30
Speaker
So get you some healthy snacks, put it in the car, share it with your setters, tell your setters or other people on your team, stop buying that crap, those candy bars at the gas station, save some money, just buy in bulk, get those healthy snacks.
00:13:45
Speaker
A few of my favorite protein bars, you got the Built Bars, super delicious, I think better than most candy bars.
00:13:54
Speaker
Another one is the Bear Bells protein.
00:13:56
Speaker
I think that's how you say it.
00:13:57
Speaker
Bear Bells protein bars.
00:13:59
Speaker
These things so good.
00:14:00
Speaker
So tasty.
00:14:01
Speaker
And I'm not positive what's in them.
00:14:03
Speaker
So someone could fact check me on this.
00:14:05
Speaker
Maybe there's some stuff that isn't the greatest.
00:14:07
Speaker
They taste good.
00:14:08
Speaker
They taste like pure candy, but very delicious protein bars.
00:14:12
Speaker
And Costco, you can get those ones aren't as tasty, but they're a little bit more economical.
00:14:18
Speaker
Save you some money if you want to go to Costco.
00:14:21
Speaker
So yeah, get stuff like that.
00:14:23
Speaker
Stay satiated, stay hydrated.
00:14:26
Speaker
You're going to be feeling great as you are out there knocking doors.
00:14:30
Speaker
You're going to be less tired and you're going to have more energy to get after it.
00:14:33
Speaker
Okay.
00:14:34
Speaker
And then this is the last point that probably most people have not heard of.
00:14:37
Speaker
Yeah.

Personalized Health Testing

00:14:38
Speaker
I did one of these, I think it was like three years ago.
00:14:42
Speaker
And my buddy, Mikey Lucas actually introduced me to these.
00:14:45
Speaker
Shout out to Mikey.
00:14:47
Speaker
But he had me take, it's called a Viome test.
00:14:51
Speaker
And this is one of those things where you, they ship you a little box in the box.
00:14:56
Speaker
They have you take, it's like a poop sample.
00:14:59
Speaker
You scoop a little piece of your poop, you send it back.
00:15:02
Speaker
They do this analysis based on like your gut health and things you should not be putting in your body.
00:15:07
Speaker
And it's actually pretty shocking.
00:15:09
Speaker
They send you back this whole detailed report of foods you should stay away from, foods you should try to consume more than others.
00:15:19
Speaker
foods that you should eat in moderation.
00:15:20
Speaker
And for me, I was super surprised by the results because even things that I thought were healthy, it's like for me, came back, I should not be eating.
00:15:31
Speaker
You know, broccoli was one of them.
00:15:33
Speaker
Eggs were another one that said specifically egg yolks that I should limit, not eat very much of.
00:15:41
Speaker
I think there's asparagus, I think was another one that I was supposed to limit.
00:15:46
Speaker
Brussels sprouts said I should avoid.
00:15:48
Speaker
So just based on your gut health, there's different things.
00:15:52
Speaker
If you want to take one of these tests, I think they're like 100 bucks or so.
00:15:56
Speaker
But you can take one of these biome tests and it will tell you things that you should avoid, things that you should consume more of, things that you should eat in moderation.
00:16:05
Speaker
So that's another little hack there.
00:16:07
Speaker
Consider taking one of those tests.
00:16:09
Speaker
Okay, so we're all about staying healthy.
00:16:12
Speaker
We're all about doing what we can to improve our performance.
00:16:16
Speaker
And most of that starts with how we're treating our bodies.

Connection Between Health and Sales

00:16:20
Speaker
If you're putting low grade fuel in the body, then it's going to be tough to get good results.
00:16:26
Speaker
So this is, I think, a thing that a lot of guys don't think about.
00:16:29
Speaker
It's like if we want better results, it's more than just learning cell skills.
00:16:34
Speaker
It's more than just learning how to maintain a good mental positive state.
00:16:38
Speaker
But a big part of this is we got to treat our bodies right and we got to make solar healthy again.
00:16:45
Speaker
Okay, so share this episode.
00:16:46
Speaker
Help me make solar healthy again.
00:16:49
Speaker
Help me make door knocking healthy again.
00:16:52
Speaker
Let's all do what we can to just treat our bodies better.
00:16:56
Speaker
And I just think, you know, I'm like a, I would say decently in shape guy.
00:17:01
Speaker
I worked out every day.
00:17:03
Speaker
Um, try to do cardio at least like three times a week.
00:17:07
Speaker
I do jujitsu.
00:17:08
Speaker
So I was, and I'm knocking doors.
00:17:10
Speaker
I would say I'm pretty active.
00:17:11
Speaker
Right.
00:17:12
Speaker
Um, but I just think of myself, like I get fatigued out there on the, on doors.
00:17:17
Speaker
Um, if I go like a four hour stretch, I'm, um, maybe I'm not conditioned.
00:17:22
Speaker
as much as I need to be right now, but I am feeling a little bit tired by the end of that.
00:17:26
Speaker
So I just think other people that don't treat their bodies well, that they're super overweight.
00:17:32
Speaker
I'm thinking, how do they do this job?
00:17:33
Speaker
Because myself, decent lean shape person, I get exhausted.
00:17:39
Speaker
Hey, so let's all treat our bodies better.
00:17:42
Speaker
Let's do what we can to spread this message.
00:17:45
Speaker
So please share it.
00:17:46
Speaker
Let me know what you think of this or if you guys have any other biohacks, anything that helps you stay healthy and alert and just feeling better on the doors.
