Introduction to Episode 60

00:00:01
Speaker
Hello, and welcome to episode number something. I don't even know what it is. I'm hurrying. Let look. Let me look. What is it? JustShillin.com. Hey, go to JustShillin.com everything you might need. It's episode number 60 of Just Shillin. It's a special episode.

Theme: Oscars Best Picture Nominees

00:00:15
Speaker
It's a it's a it's a special episode with a theme.
00:00:18
Speaker
um And for that theme, I brought in a very special guest who I'll mention in just a second. But first, I'll talk about the theme. The theme is Best Picture nominees for this year's Oscars.
00:00:33
Speaker
Do I watch the Oscars? No, I don't. But do I like, do Madison and I like to watch the the Best Picture nominees each year? Yeah. Why? ah i don't know. Because its it makes us feel more something, i don't know, cultured, like we're expanding our horizons, watching movies we wouldn't normally seen, but i don't know.

Guest Introduction: Ed Bossa

00:00:52
Speaker
But to help me talk about that um is ah somebody I consider a very good friend, fellow crafter. He's on the wrong coast, but we won't hold that against him.
00:01:06
Speaker
Ed Bossa from the Scruffy's. Hey, cause someone's on the wrong coast. No, Tahoe's beautiful, man. I'm pretty jealous of Tahoe.
00:01:18
Speaker
Not gonna

Plans to Watch Nominees

00:01:19
Speaker
lie. if you if you If you weren't in Maine, I feel like I could give you, i would give you more like gruff, bi but Maine's pretty cool. i'm I'm a fan. Yeah, Maine's awesome. It's laid back. Not a lot of people.
00:01:33
Speaker
Slower than the rest, you know. It's not like New York City where everything's so fast. It's very green. yeah Very green and lively. Yeah, man. like I put the call. I know I talked about it.
00:01:46
Speaker
Like, I kind of got the idea. if i've had the idea for a while, but it's always like, yeah yeah like they they make the announcements for who the Best Picture nominees are.
00:01:58
Speaker
And then it's like, oh, shit, I got to watch like 10 movies. Maybe I've seen one or two. And so then it's like, I really don't want to talk about it with myself. That's kind of, that's boring. And Madison has zero interest in being anywhere close to a microphone.
00:02:12
Speaker
ah So it's like, all right, can I con one of my friends into at least watching a couple? um Maybe we get like the the the the the ones that they at least know. But luckily, you du you've you've gone like the extra mile. And I think you've currently seen.
00:02:32
Speaker
ah half a movie more than I

Cultural Enrichment Through Films

00:02:34
Speaker
have off the list. And so that is and that's in a crazy short amount of time. So yeah kudos to you. When you pitched it to me, I was like, ah this sounds cool.
00:02:44
Speaker
i'm gonna I should culture myself. I should watch these things. Other years, like past years, Oscars would happen. I'd be like, fuck, i got it i got I should probably see one of those movies or whatever. i See the one that won. And then like months later, I'll end up seeing it. And be like, oh, I should have seen it sooner or something.
00:03:01
Speaker
But this this makes me like...
00:03:05
Speaker
get cultured, see it, and be like, see what they're seeing and why it was nominated or what I think is why it was nominated. well but And then you get to be disappointed when they announce the winners and like, cause I feel like I'm that every year. i'm like, that makes zero sense. I don't understand. Cause I'm not, I'm not a film person. Like maybe I'm like, I, I like movies. I like films, but I don't consider myself of someone who's taken a film class and can speak intelligently about it.
00:03:36
Speaker
Um, yeah, me neither. It's not, it's mostly vibes. You know, it's vibes and that looks pretty. And then trying to bolt extra feelings on top of it. um And hopefully, hopefully that makes it more relatable to the people who probably listen to this, our friends who have varying degrees of of of a film knowledge. because

Watching Without Prior Knowledge

00:04:00
Speaker
that's Because I think at the end of the day, it's not about trying to pick, for me at least, like pick the best film, but it's trying to like expand the
00:04:09
Speaker
what I've seen. So then I can appreciate the stuff I do love more. And also just, especially when we do it so in such a tight constraint, it's like, if I would have watched one movie six months ago or 10 months ago versus doing a so many of them in a short amount of time, it's like, you really start to notice the differences, uh, in things, but All that. Yeah, it's... At least I sit in a bubble of like, I only want to watch sci-fi and fantasy, so I'm going to watch Tron and Star Wars and... Same.
00:04:47
Speaker
But like this this this expands our horizons, like you were saying.

Listing Best Picture Nominees

00:04:52
Speaker
because i because i mean I'll be honest. It's not something I... there's We always get to that tail end of that list or some of these movies where I'm like, I really do not want to watch this.
00:04:59
Speaker
And like one of them specifically... that we'll talk about in a minute is one that I like, we watched it last night and it was one of those ones where i'm like, cause I don't really, she will not read anything about him ahead of time. And I'll roughly know, unless it's been in like big pop culture, like I'm not like digging into the details or looking at reviews ahead of time. But just from what I did know about this movie, I'm like, I am not looking forward to this. And it was just like,
00:05:28
Speaker
It was a surprise. I'll leave it at that for now. We can we can discuss it more in a second. but I'm going to preface this because you said that. One, two, three, four, five of the movies I watched without really knowing what it was about.
00:05:48
Speaker
I like maybe had a slight inkling, but not really knowing what it was about. And I really like doing that now that I've done it. And it reminds me of when I saw The Matrix. Because I had no idea what was it about what it was about when I went to theater. And it blew my mind.
00:06:04
Speaker
And it it does help. I like it. yeah it's like it's Sometimes it's sometimes it's um impossible. Like for like f one like I wonder what F1's about. it's like That's not... yeah Frankenstein. What's that about? yeah yeah what What could it possibly be? But like beyond that, like there's some of these where i hadn't I'd never even heard of them beforehand. or um yeah but But with that...
00:06:28
Speaker
like let's i'll I'll go through the list because i ah I'm trying to keep it a spoiler free as long as I can to try to maybe entice people first and then go through each one.

Spoiler-Free Discussion Plans

00:06:39
Speaker
so So there's 10 nominees this year. um That number fluctuates depending on the year, depending on how many Netflix gets in. but so Usually it's somewhere between like 8 and 12. There's a nice middle ground this year. We got we have Begonia.
00:06:55
Speaker
We have F1. Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Train Dreams.
00:07:10
Speaker
Those are in alphabetical order. I just now realized that. um Yeah, so there's 10 of them. And I think most of them are they are available right now except for, so like I have not seen um Marty Supreme,
00:07:27
Speaker
Or The Secret Agent. I think Marty Supreme becomes available digitally next week. So hopefully we'll be able to finish that. And Secret Agent is just almost three hours long. So I haven't. that's It's just we haven't gotten around to it yet. So we're not going to discuss all of them today.
00:07:41
Speaker
We'll discuss as many as we can, as many as we've both seen. um And go from there.

Debating The Rise of Skywalker

00:07:46
Speaker
And maybe maybe we'll maybe you'll do a supplemental in a couple weeks right before right before the the awards just to see if any of our feelings have changed. Because I do i know I'm personally guilty of every movie is a 9 or a 10 within the first 48 hours of me watching it.
00:08:03
Speaker
It's like, just I really enjoyed that. That was fantastic. It's just like Rise of Skywalker, right? I'm kidding. but that's a That's a good segue because I know you talked about what you had you had thoughts. So let's lead yeah let's lead with what you what your thoughts were on The Rise of Skywalker. I'm curious. I listened to your last was episode. Great episode, by the way. Thank you.

Comparing Star Wars Films

00:08:25
Speaker
The Rise of Skywalker was a contention of mine in my head because
00:08:34
Speaker
what i i like value my first opinions after I see the movie. Because after The Force Awakens, sorry for people that love that movie, I was not impressed.
00:08:47
Speaker
I was like, this feels like a new hope. like i was just when When they did the trench run near the end, I was like, fuck this. yeah But ah I still like it, obviously, in Star Wars.
00:09:00
Speaker
the Last Jedi love. Rise of Skywalker, I walked out of, and i liked it for some reason. I remember coming out of I think, and I know why, I know why.
00:09:11
Speaker
It's because they tried to answer questions. Because the first two movies set up so many questions. And you're like, what the fuck are you doing? You like you have like 800 characters now, and you have no origins like for some of them, and you're like, questions. Just questions everywhere. And then Rise Skywalker comes in, and it's like,
00:09:30
Speaker
oh, this is what Snoke origin, yeah like this is the clone tanks and stuff and blah, blah, blah. i was like, oh, finally, they're like telling us some shit. Not that that needs to happen, you know, like previous Star Wars was all done in books and shit, but I applauded the Rise of Skywalker for that and I think that pushed me towards liking it at first.
00:09:53
Speaker
Then I started thinking about like the Star Destroyers and that just, I didn't really love that at all, but Overall, that was i just wanted to say that I came out of the movie theater liking it more than I did walking out of the theater of The Force Awakens.
00:10:09
Speaker
Sorry. Hey, Dan... And if that hurts and if that hurt somebody's feelings, then maybe, you know, it's just... it doesn't it shouldn't Don't let that change your opinion. Like, I i enjoyed Force Awakens, but I understand where you're coming from. Like, it is the same movie. Yes, I know that the Daisy Ridley filter, like, is an automatic plus 10 to everything for me, personally. And that's yeah that's my own bias. um You're right, her outfit is good, by the way.
00:10:39
Speaker
And Rise Skywalker, dude, I know. Like, Jimmy Christensen. Like it's it's a, it's a lea problem for me. White outfits. Leia's hot white outfit is awesome too. So I don't Padme and her white outfit, something about it.
00:10:53
Speaker
It was life-changing Padme's. And I mean, I know I'm of a, so of a certain age, so it's like I can't speak to, to, to lay and Carrie Fisher, but I, I get the sentiment that some of our friends talk about with that when it's like, Oh no, Padme,
00:11:08
Speaker
vivid I remember vividly coming out of um like Attack of the Clones or

Nostalgia and Story Coherence

00:11:16
Speaker
The Phantom Menace and like walking with my buddy to Books and Million next door to the movie theater and being like,
00:11:22
Speaker
You think they have any picture books for Star Wars? Like already? Like right now? know the movie just came out. yeah Do you think there's... like I just need to like... This was back before like we had cell phones in our hands. and it's like I don't have time to go home and get on the internet and like wait for interlaced photos to like slowly load. ah like I need to like... Man, being being like ah a young kid is a wild time. And I don't miss it and I don't envy it. But...
00:11:52
Speaker
Shout out to all the yeah all them going through it right now. oo Best of luck. But yeah. I just wanted to mention that because you had talked about it. so Yeah, dude. that's so i mean How do you feel about it now? Are do are you still in the same... Digging it?
00:12:07
Speaker
digging it Without overthinking it. I still don't want it for its attempt to explain things. um
00:12:15
Speaker
I like most of it, I think. I don't... ah The Star Destroyer thing really throws me off like by You don't have to have that many. you don't have to and don't i don't know. Like the four billion Star Destroyers? It was over the top to me. and i they didn't have to do that, and that kind of pissed me off. But I love at the end when you know all the citizens come together and they have all their ships and they come in and help like with Lando in the lead. like That always goosebumps.
00:12:45
Speaker
um But yeah, overall the movie...

Creative CGI Choices in Star Wars

00:12:52
Speaker
I don't know. Like, when's the last time I saw it, right? Like, a while. yeah Same with Force Awakens, though. Time's flying, man. It's 2026. Woo-hoo-hoo.
00:13:03
Speaker
I'll watch The Last Jedi over both of them, though. Like, no if if if I'm like, I want to sit down and watch a sequel movie, it'll be The Last Jedi. you You gave your hot take, I'll give mine. The Last Jedi's my favorite Star Wars movie. Right. As of right now. Like,
00:13:20
Speaker
Overall? or like yeah like all time i think oh yeah okay but you Yeah. It's currently my it's currently my favorite. now It's wild, wild stuff. um When you talk about the Star Destroyers and the good guys coming in at the end, like it gives you goosebumps. but then I always laugh at that part now because I'm like...
00:13:40
Speaker
I try to picture, like, what was it like being, like, the the art crew and people, the CGI guys working on it? Like, I just picture there's a slider, like, that controls the number of, like, elements. Like, okay, with over here, it's like, we have three Star Destroyers, and you slowly drag it, and the guy's, like, looking over his shoulders, how many do we want? It's like, let's go all the way. Just go all the way right. just It's like, and there's just, like, all of sudden, there's a billion Star Destroyers. It's like, you don't think that's too many? It's like, no, i think that looks good. Like, I think...
00:14:07
Speaker
Then we don't have to render stars in the background. It's just all Star

Oscar Film Discussion Plans

00:14:10
Speaker
Destroyers. Same thing happened at the end where it's like, how many how many ships should come to the rescue? It's like, i think how far right how far does that slider go to the right? Just go all the way.
00:14:21
Speaker
and not Not to make this a Rise of Skywalker podcast, but I think J.J. did it to himself when he made Starkiller Base so powerful.
00:14:32
Speaker
like If you think of what it did, like destroyed an entire system or more than one system. i consume It consumed a sun. we The beams came out and then like went and then split into other beams. And i was like, what the fuck is this? I was like, don't It was super ridiculous and also super ridiculous and super powerful. But then why do you beat that? Oh, let's have like a million star destroyers with, with planet destroying capability.
00:14:59
Speaker
Let's go to a planet where there's we're nobody can find, but then we'll still hide all of these Star Destroyers under the ground. so no one So that way, if case somebody does find this planet, they won't find the billions of Star Destroyers.
00:15:17
Speaker
Under the surface. of Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. it's There's a lot of things I think JJ shot himself in the foot with in The Force Awakens. That's just my opinion. I think he went more towards nostalgia and it hurt him in the long run.
00:15:30
Speaker
the sea let's The whole trilogy in the long run. Oh, for sure. It's bored, like plot over story. yeah Anyways.
00:15:41
Speaker
yeah rolling into the, rolling into the Oscar noms. All right. So we're not, I don't think there's any way for us to talk about these without, like, I'm going to try not to go into too many, too many.
00:15:54
Speaker
Like, I think it's going to be a boilable If you don't want to get spoiled, maybe I'll try to like, for each one, we'll try to be like, We can talk about a high level and they'll be like, all right, then I'll try to put chapter. How about chapter markers? We'll talk about it lightly and then we'll be like spoilers going forward. Skip to the next, the next chapter. If you don't want to hear about anything bad or spoilery about this movie, but I just want about cars. So,
00:16:22
Speaker
Yes. Go ahead. Go ahead. Spoiler alert. I just want to preface that all these movies, every single one of them, the acting is superb. Like, it is there's a reason they were nominated.
00:16:34
Speaker
So, like, I said I didn't like it, it probably leans more towards, like, plot and stuff because it was executed well for what it was. That's why it was nominated.
00:16:46
Speaker
Directing, acting, writing, awesomeness. like a billion A million percent. and And i'll also, like so I have like scores for each one of them. And just to be clear, i am not rating these with these scores of like what I would give them on Letterboxd or IMDb. It's really just in reference to each other in short. Yeah.
00:17:10
Speaker
in in in a short time frame and like do did i enjoy it and what i and i also have like what i recommend our friends to watch it like is it one you need to go go watch like before the Oscars. um So some of them may sound critical, but it's really, they are all phenomenal movies so far that I've seen.
00:17:33
Speaker
Like, do I have nitpicks? Yeah. Do i things that i wish I would just see differently? Of course. But if I didn't, what would we talk about? So. Exactly. Can't just go, can't go through and be like, this was 10, 10 out of 10.
00:17:45
Speaker
Great. Next one. 10 out of 10.
00:17:50
Speaker
okay
