Speaker: I actually can't control myself if it's around. love so much. have the same problem. It's so good. And then when the season's over, like I'm out of it. Like I don't want it anymore because I like binge it.

Speaker: It's yeah like an unhealthy obsession. Welcome to Three Little Fishes. We're three sisters who grew up in the Midwest together, but have since spread across the country. Speaker: So let's jump in.

Speaker: What's up, fishes? What's up, fishes? ah Good to see you. Hi, everybody. Kathy, it's your birthday week. You've made it around the sun another year. Hello! Hello!

Speaker: I know. I can't believe it. i don't know what's happened. I i mean, honestly, i don't think I've ever met anybody who loves their birthday as much as you. So I love this for you. i hope you have like a whole month of celebrating. Well, I have to say I'm a little bit worried because I don't know.

Speaker: I feel like summer just kind of like flew by and now it's October and I'm like, what? But yeah. I normally play a lot of golf in the summer, but I didn't play hardly they any golf.

Speaker: And I was invited, and this has been a recurring event okay every year on my birthday. okay i get invited to this golf club to play with my friends.

Speaker: And i have not been playing. And so I'm going to play so badly tomorrow. And I'm feeling stressed about it. You are such our father. I mean, listening to you tell the story and like you're not leaning into the fact that you're playing golf on your birthday week, which is your favorite things. Which is your favorite things. Yeah, but you're like, oh my gosh, I'm going to play terribly. This is awful. I'm gonna make a fool of myself.

Speaker: I mean, lady, just enjoy yourself. like just I normally was like a half full person, but like literally my golf game is not like you have.

Speaker: I don't know. I got it. They're not going to kick you out. They're not going to get it. I mean, golf is so hard. And if you aren't playing consistently, which you have not been doing, you don't feel like you're putting your best foot forward. But the good news is these are your friends. They're tried and trues.

Speaker: that It's going to be fine. Even if you like duff constantly, it's it's not going to matter. Just. yeah Have a beer and relax. It should be. I mean, it's all about celebrating you, which is all going to be fine. It's all going to be fine. Yeah. All right. We'll enjoy it. On today's show, you guys, we are going to talk about fishes bitching.

Speaker: yay or nay, and what's for dinner. But before we get into it, I just want to remind everybody to please rate, review, and follow, and invite your favorite fishes to jump in and join the conversation. Also, I would love it if you all would find the subscribe button and hit that subscribe, and we're, invite your friends to hit that subscribe button so we can grow and have more fishes join in We're fun.

Speaker: Tell all your friends. All right, y'all. Fish bitching. Well, I can just tell you one little thing that I'm going to bitch about, and I don't know if anybody else is caring about it, but gas prices for us um to fill up my car today was over $6 a gallon, and that is just for regular gas. It's not even for, like, fancy gas.

Speaker: It's just basic gas. Yeah. Like, what's a lot the H? I hear you. I actually had i have a Suburban, which is a huge vehicle, And the other day, i think I spent $120. And twenty dollars and i was like, my. I have a big car, too. Where am I driving? It's brutal. like Right.

Speaker: Yeah. It's brutal. it I get you, Nancy. It's terrible. Yeah, it's not great. It's not great. it's It's a lot. There's a lot of money being like lost out there. I'm nothing fun. Like I have to be able to, have to get from point A to point B. and you know what I actually think about, because I don't know if you guys do, but I think about people who live out here who work paycheck to paycheck and have to drive to work.

Speaker: And I don't know how they're doing it. Like with, with these prices, I really don't. It's terrible. Well, I mean, when we lived in Chicagoland, a lot of that was like taxes, like they,

Speaker: You know, it wasn't so much the gas that was expensive. it was all the taxes that got attached to everything. But like I have my electrician here today doing some things for me. And he lives like an hour away and drives south to get to me. oh I can't even imagine how much money it costs him to get from all his jobs.

Speaker: And we don't have like a huge tax bill. thing with our gas here, but yeah, it's not just a lot tax anymore. It's a lot of gas. Like it's everywhere. Yeah. It's really, you know, bad, bad. Yeah.

Speaker: yeah I'll tell you what else I have on my mind. Y'all is we have, i have a very good friend right now who is going through a divorce and I got together with some of my girlfriends and we were talking and it's super sad. Divorce is hard. It's sometimes a necessary thing, but what I don't understand is, is how people can be so hateful for to each other when they used to like love each other. like yeah What is happening? like This woman had your children. like Don't want to be married, that's fine. But like don't be a bad human being. like now I don't understand it. Divorce is terrible.

Speaker: I'm so sorry. That is stinky. I have somebody going through a divorce too. and it's also it's it is very hard to see people recognize like it's so hurtful to have somebody not care about you anymore. I mean, it's but beyond like getting divorced. It's like, yeah, you've gotten to a point where you just don't care how they are as a human and you're willing to to sacrifice all those years and time and all the Well, i think it comes down to money, unfortunately. Yeah, a lot of it does, sadly.

Speaker: Like people being greedy, you mean? and Yeah. Like, she's not going to get all my money. Yeah. yeah Well, it's our money until we're divorced. It's our money. Right. um I just think it's just... I feel like people just generally are not treating each other well. Like, even, like, going into, like, parking lots these days, people, like, honking and being rude. It's like... I yeah i actually don't get that either. i'm like...

Speaker: Okay, I was here before you. i should get that spot. Like, what are you doing? yeah I mean, I don't know. Common sense and just decency sometimes with people. yeah I don't know what's going on. Give everybody a little grace. My gosh.

Speaker: I can tell you what's annoying me right now is my son always drives our car and then he leaves the garage door open. And like now is the time where all the leaves... They blow into our garage. So when he leaves it open, I have a garage full of leaves. And I'm like. Yeah.

Speaker: And you live in an area where you have a lot of mature trees and they are dropping because it's fall y'all and they all get in there. I know we have that too. We keep our garage for clothes. I'm like, and then the crusty little things come in the house because everyone steps on them.

Speaker: And then it's annoying. Yeah. Well, the leaves get attached to my dog's like withers, and they bring them into the house, and then they leave them everywhere.

Speaker: And I'm like, that and the muddy paws. Like, come on. Stop it. It's terrible. we I don't know what's happening in your area, but in...

Speaker: My area in Philadelphia, it has been raining, honestly, for three weeks. I mean, I'm not kidding. like Yeah. Send some of that my way.

Speaker: Muddy pommas have been in my house constantly. I'm just like... We're complaining about like muddy paws and rain and I feel like we are living literally on the sun. i know. It is so hot here. Like even like in Malibu, it's 103 degrees. It's October. Really? Like, yeah. I mean, you guys, it is unprecedented, this heat.

Speaker: And honestly, it's making me cranky. It's been going on and it won't stop. which We typically don't talk about weather here, but it's like... I mean, I don't know it's exciting, but yeah. I don't know if it's the change. It making you cranky. is. I will say, I agree. You are a little crabby lately. And I don't know if it's the change or the heat, but I am sweating all the time. All the time. It's so weird because you're having a heat wave, but I feel like we're having rain cold spell, which is making me crazy because I'm like, it's not wintertime yet.

Speaker: I'm not ready. I mean, I'm not... I mean, I'm not a scientist, but like, I don't know. Maybe there's something to this global warming. I don't know. Like it seems like it's out of source. What I'm hearing is everybody needs to move to Nashville because our weather is very temperate.

Speaker: Nancy, we need to swap. I need to live in California and you need to live here. yeah I mean, I don't like, I don't mind the change. I don't mind having to put on a coat. I love it. not watching the Like was watching the bears game over the weekend and I would have died to want to put on a sweatshirt and cozy up and like watch it. But instead I'm like, what is the most least amount of clothes I can wear? Can I run around in my underwear? Is that appropriate?

Speaker: No, says yeah a company that's not appropriate. That's the one thing about fall I do not like. I do not like layering. I hate putting on the layers. i like I'm like the snowman. i'm like I hate feeling like I'm like puffy.

Speaker: And then you like, I don't, I don't like it at all. Well, that's like the fall trend this year. Like you don't want to be, layers you don't want to layers, but like it is layers, but they're like lean layers. Right. And isn't like the skinny jean back, which i who, and again, who thinks the skinny jean is a good idea? i don't, I do not like it. i like, I could live in like a bell bottom and be super happy. The skinny jeans. So wore a skinny jean last night, actually. I went to a concert and I wore a skinny jean. I thought it was cute. with a But like were you like having to suck it in and like... Well, just because it's a skinny jean doesn't mean it doesn't fit you. Like, no. My skinny jeans I can barely get on. Honestly, i can barely get them on. I'm like, i got to throw those away.

Speaker: yeah I mean, I don't like to feel like – I just don't like it to have that straight of a look. My body is not straight, and I just – I don't have long legs.

Speaker: I don't know if he knows about me, but they're very short, and my waist is short. We don't really either, Nancy. We got to cut the bad jean.

Speaker: i mean, not to brag, but my legs are long, and my I loved my skinny jeans last night. So, I mean, don't know. I'm just saying. You're like the perfect height and the perfect leg length. We got this. Oh my God. I guess the first gets all of it and we just get the rest. Yeah. You guys chomped. Kathy got the next best and then I got like the leftovers.

Speaker: This is crazy talk. You know what I don't like about this time of year is that the days are getting shorter. Yeah, I don't like that either. Our son is home for fall break and he actually brought this up to me. He's like, you know, I wanted to play golf and I want to do 18 holes. But a lot of the courses, like if you try and get a tee time after three o'clock, they won't let you play 18. They'll only let you play nine because it's getting the days are shorter. I know. So I hate the days are shorter. Yeah. Had to go to a different course than he normally goes.

Speaker: And I was like, yeah, I've noticed that like the days are shorter. And then pretty soon in the morning, I'm going to wake up and it's going to be dark out. Yeah. Which is a drag. It already was dark this morning for me. i was like, don't like it.

Speaker: It's fall y'all. All the bad stuff and all the bad stuff. So you guys thought that it would be fun to play a game yay or nay. and kind of lean into fall because we were kind of complaining and bitching earlier about some stuff that's annoying us. And then some of that fell into the fall and then we're like, oh, do we like that? Do we agree with what's great? So we thought we'd play this game called yay or nay.

Speaker: Yeah, you guys, are all of our listeners will get to know kind of what we think about some of these fall ideas. All right, y'all, let's jump in. So I think I'm kicking this off with, um I'm gonna do the first couple of questions. so ladies, should pumpkin spice be in all things fall?

Speaker: And i think I think Linda will say yes and Nancy will say yes. Oh, yay. Nay.

Speaker: I'm nay. What? Nancy, i I'm so surprised by that. No, I do not believe it belongs in everything. i think it's i think it's just, you know, in ah and yeah it doesn't belong in everything. Like maybe in a little bit of a pie or something, but no. yeah I don't want it in my coffee. I don't want it in my ice cream. I don't want it in a stuffing. Oh, okay. No. That's a hard, hard no.

Speaker: Huh, yeah. right, next question. Do you like candy corn, yay or nay? I think Nancy's nay because she doesn't like artificial stuff.

Speaker: I think Linda's a yay. I'm also a yay.

Speaker: Okay, so funny about this is you two lived together for years. so i I yeah word smes i love it. I love it. I love it very much. And I like it. i even put it with some nuts, like roasted nuts sometimes in a little dish.

Speaker: I actually can't control myself if it's around. I have the same problem. It's so good. And then when the season's over, like I'm out of it. Like I don't want it anymore because I like binge it. It's like ah a unhealthy obsession.

Speaker: You know, my husband buys like the cheap candy corn, which is so... It's not Brock's. And I'm like, Peter, stop buying this. Like, this is... kind good I mean, not to throw Peter under on the bus, but he also buys you the generic butterscotch candy. I know. You can't do that either. It's got to be the Brock's.

Speaker: No go. Yeah. Oh, that's funny. Next question. Yeah. Kathy, I'm a little worried for you. How well do you know me I should know you better. Well, I guess, I mean, that's what I'm hearing. Stop. Okay.

Speaker: Carving pumpkins worth the mess. I think you both will say yay Yay. Love carving pumpkins. Good job, Candy. Okay. Thank you.

Speaker: God. You know what I even do? Sometimes Johanna loves to paint the pumpkins. And sometimes we even, we do carving and painting. That tracks. double mess. Yes.

Speaker: And you got to like scoop out the seeds and roast them and all the things. Like that's just like. I don't do that. I don't roast them. It's too much. love roasting. Me too. Okay. i don't mean last My last question, ladies.

Speaker: Going to a haunted house. Yay or nay? i think Linda is Nancy's nay. Nay. Nay.

Speaker: may nay Oh, got a mocha.

Speaker: I don't like to be scared. Like I don't watch any scary movies. I don't want to go to the haunted house. that is not true What does she like?

Speaker: What does she watch as scary? I don't watch scary movies. Okay, when you have a tornado, you watch the tornado movies. Twisters? That's not scary. That's not a scary movie. That is scary.

Speaker: It is not. Yes, it is. But I don't watch like Friday, what's Friday the 13th or the screams or the like Freddy Krueger, what's that? Okay. I don't watch any of that stuff. All right. so i I don't like it.

Speaker: Okay. I maybe got 50% maybe. Yeah. I mean, I think that was pretty good. Okay. I'm going to give it a try. So girls, yay or nay, do you go to a football game when it's 80 degrees or more?

Speaker: I'm going to guess Kathy's going to say yes. And Nancy's going to say no. So I do, it is a yay, but I have a caveat because i mean i plan' if I'm going to a football game, I've planned for it. And so I'm looking forward to this outing, but I probably am bitching and letting people know yeah that's too happy that that I'm that I'm sweating here in the sun. Okay, I'm not bitching, I'm happy. Yay.

Speaker: you know, I have somebody who goes to the University of Tennessee and they had a big game. And one of my really good friends was planning on going, but it was hot that day. And she was like, it's too hot. I can't go to football when it's hot.

Speaker: So she didn't go. So it made me think of that. Okay. And if you're in the change, I'm just going to say this. Like, who's that comedian that always talks about the change? I mean, I think that there's something to it. If you're constantly running hot, it's not enjoyable. I get it. Everything kind of sucks. Yeah. Okay, so um would you, yay or nay, would you share your last apple cider donut?

Speaker: I'm going to say you're both going to say yay but you're going to say you won half of it. yeah nice yes ah come I might not even make you like, give me half. I might just, you might not make us share. Oh, that's sweet.

Speaker: Okay. Yay or nay matching Halloween costumes. I'm going to say, Kathy's going to say yay. And Nancy's going to say nay.

Speaker: So. Yay. i kind of like yay. Because don't love to dress up in general. Yeah. So if I have like somebody I'm doing it with, it's more fun for me to do it, to have that like support.

Speaker: I get that. I mean, one year, we always try and coordinate. Coordinate. But we were like Pokemon, like family. Oh, yeah. So we all like matched. So yeah, we definitely have done it.

Speaker: I love it. That's so cute. Okay. Last one. um Do you start eating different foods in October than you do the rest of the year? Yay or nay?

Speaker: I'm going to say Nancy is nay. Kathy is yay.

Speaker: No. Nay. Yeah. I'm a yay. Because I think for me, like it I'll eat like more soups and like stews and like more.

Speaker: um party stuff in the winter. <unk> i think it's my Midwestern roots. I just really want it. like I love chili and I feel like football season has started and I really want to make chili it's too hot.

Speaker: But I feel like I said nay for you because you eat chili all summer long and your family gets mad at you. no I don't. I want you to make it. I want to make it. Okay, so you just talk about it all the time and you don't it. love it.

Speaker: I do love it. i do love it. I stand corrected. What do I know? Yeah, i mean, we don't really start eating differently probably till like November or December. Yeah.

Speaker: got You know what, Linda? i do I don't typically make chili in the summer. i definitely don't, but I probably did. i do like one-pot meal, so I can see why you thought that. like I love the one-pot meals. Yeah, one-pot meal is good. Yeah, yeah I get it.

Speaker: Yeah. All right, you guys. I'm going to try a couple for you. um Should Halloween candy... halloween candy be sorted after you trick or treat before you let the kids dive into it.

Speaker: You wanna check it for like, you know. Razors. Yes. Yeah. ya Cause I, have name I'm inbred to this. Cause our parents did this to our candy. So I probably would look at it just to make sure things look, yeah, pathetic before.

Speaker: I always did that with the kids. think I always said to the kids, as you're sorting through, just like pay attention. If something's ripped, don't eat it. Yeah. i did I didn't go through it with them. Right. I just was like, you know, if it's torn, like don't eat it.

Speaker: Like it got dirt in there or something. so You know, it's super interesting. i now to this day, i still, I'm sure i will sort through Johanna's.

Speaker: candy when she comes home just because I'm psycho in that way. Like, I don't really think there's going to be a razor blade in there, but there is something weird that we go to strangers house and take food from them of people we have, we don't know.

Speaker: Like it's still a weird thing, no? Right. I mean, it's a very weird tradition if you think about it, but, um you know, i just, but yeah it's so fun and it is a weird tradition, but I just, I mean, like I said, I just always said to the kids, like, pay attention. If it's ripped, don't eat it. Like it's, that would be silly. Right.

Speaker: um All right. Yay or nay. Would you do a corn maze if you knew you were going to get lost?

Speaker: Yay. Nay. no I don't want to be lost. I would have like full-fledged anxiety attack.

Speaker: Oh my gosh, Kathy, that is so funny to me. i Kathy would like climb up on it. She would like look over and she'd figure it out.

Speaker: And then she would climb back down. She'd be like, I made She'd probably want to get lost really anyway because she doesn't really move the direction. that's true. You're not really lost. You might have taken a little detour.

Speaker: hu know What I would like to see is like if they did an adult corn maze and like a kid corn maze. So like if the adult corn maze, I took you in sections and you like made it to like a little appetizer and then you made it to like a little cocktail. That would like I could get on board with. But just to like walk into a maze that's big and I could get lost for a day. Like that's a no for me.

Speaker: There's no incentive. It's like you're like a little mouse. Here's the little treat. need the treat. Dangle that treat in front of me. I'm in Just to get lost, i'm out.

Speaker: Oh, my gosh. We are so funny and weird. All right, y'all. That was pretty fun. Before we do What's for Dinner, can we do like a little something special?

Speaker: that okay? Yes. So Kathy kind of said it's her birthday week and Nancy and I just have like a little tiny jingle for her to celebrate her birthday. take it away, Nance.

Speaker: All right. Happy birthday, Kathy, dear. Three little fishes cheer loud and clear. Lake days, fishing, sun and fun.

Speaker: But dress up time, you're number one. Our friend, our sister, our confidant, you make life a little more fun. So blow out your candles and make a wish. We're so glad you're one of our fish.

Speaker: Happy birthday, Kathy. And many more. We you have great birthday week. Thank you. glad that you were born. You make the world a little better. So happy.

Speaker: You guys are so nice. i love you too So nice. um So it's your birthday week and you get to cook dinner. what are you going to make? You're in charge.

Speaker: you Tell us about it. I was just kind of thinking i do like bakes, like making it easy on nights that you're super busy and that kind of thing. And I came across, because it is fall, y'all, a pumpkin pasta bake from all recipes. And I actually made it yesterday.

Speaker: and it's a pretty easy recipe. it It's rotini pasta and Italian sausage and... just some different herbs and spices and things and some whipping cream. And it made a nice sauce.

Speaker: And it was easy. so is it canned pumpkin or chopped pumpkin? Yeah, it's pumpkin puree. And it wasn't really pumpkin-y.

Speaker: I was worried there would be a lot of pumpkin, like spice, which I don't really like. but I was just going to say, I'm fascinated with this pick for so many levels, like so many reasons. Like number one, I didn't know you liked pumpkin. Number two, it's a casserole, which means you have to put in lots of things.

Speaker: I don't like pumpkin, but I was like, I'm going try it. Because i had read on one of the reviews, it didn't taste like pumpkin. So that's why I said, I'm i'm ah i'm in. I'm trying it. Okay. Give it a try. so We had a ah salad as a side and then Italian bread.

Speaker: And my husband was like, I really didn't say a whole lot about it because I was like, I wanted to kind of see what he thought of it. Yeah. And um he gave it a seven and a half.

Speaker: Okay. he He doesn't really like casseroles. that's like his He doesn't really like them. Yeah. But I actually thought it was pretty good. i would have given it probably an eight.

Speaker: Okay. Like, you know, it wasn't like hands down, like this is the best I've ever had, but it was like hearty. i enjoyed the sausage in it. Yeah. It was, um,

Speaker: It was pretty, and it also had bacon in it, which made it have a little bit extra flavor. Like smoky. Yeah, it was hearty. And i I felt like after I ate it, I was full and I was happy. So I was like, this is a good fall meal.

Speaker: Well, when you said you were doing this, you sent the recipe to us, and I haven't made it yet, honestly, but... I always think of pumpkin as being something sweet, not necessarily savory, but it is a squash and butternut squash is very sweet. So I can understand it probably, if you're not putting in like cinnamon, it's probably... a good substitute for like... what it would I think the sweet in the pumpkin outweighs because it has some pepper flakes and things in it, the spice.

Speaker: So it kind of like blends it all together. So yeah like I don't think it was too spicy. Like the kids wouldn't like it. Like it it seemed like it was just meal. Would you didn't make it again? Yeah, I probably would. I'm not sure I'm going to try that, to be honest, because we're not a casserole family. But you are making me wonder, like since you you're kind of selling it, that it turned out and everybody kind of ate it. Well, it's it's a nice dish to make because it makes a lot. It's like you're having some guests over or yeah you have several. And it's different. Yeah.

Speaker: people to feed like and it's just trenches and it's hearty and it's and that's not an expensive meal to make you know a can of pumpkin and pasta and cream I yeah that's not expensive i mean honestly you could probably make it vegan too you could probably leave out like the sausage and the bacon if you wanted to you could put probably chicken in it you could probably do ground beef in it if you didn't want to do sausage like you could probably do whatever you want Yeah, I like it. All right. It'd probably be fine.

Speaker: so Yeah, it sounds more nutritious than the pumpkin bread with icing that I made with my pumpkin puree this weekend. Yeah. But pumpkin, right, is what's, like, it's really good for you, right? Like, what does it do? Like, anti-flamphory, like...

Speaker: It's got a lot of vitamins in it, I think. yeah And then they also like, sometimes they give it to the dogs. Like if they've got upset tummies. Yeah, you give it to your dog. Yeah. So, I mean, there's a lot of good things about squash this time of year.

Speaker: You need a pumpkin. It's a fall year-all recipe. the pe That's why we for it. It's a fall year-all. Yeah, I love it. And if you need a pumpkin fix, maybe this would be a good one to try. I like it. All right.

Speaker: Thanks, Kath. Yep. Well, we want to thank you for listening to our podcast and letting us sisters jump into your day. Please make sure to follow, rate, and review us. We love your feedback.
