Speaker: And I tell you what I'm excited about that um lands tonight is nobody wants the season three. I did not. I love season one. Me too. struggled a little bit with season z two. Me too. And I feel like they're going to get their leggings back again for season three.
Speaker: Their leggings. Their leggings, their footing, their footing back. Is that the thing?
Speaker: Welcome to Three Little Fishes. We're three sisters who grew up in the Midwest together, but have since spread across the country. I live in Los Angeles. I'm in Nashville. And I live in Philadelphia. We are all married with children, have all had careers, but now we stay at home with our families. Join us as we share secrets and stories about being women, wives, and mothers. We welcome you to laugh along, learn something new, reach out, and join our conversation.
Speaker: So let's jump in. What's up, fishes? What's up, fishes? What's up? Hey, girls. Good to see you Okay, so I brushed my hair today or washed my hair today. I'm not totally ready.
Speaker: But tonight, I get to go see Sting in concert. He is playing at The Truth, which is this new venue here in Nashville. It's in the Wedgwood Houston neighborhood. It's very, very cool. A friend of mine went to his show last night and said he, of course, is amazing. And then last night, he also was on Broadway and he went to Robert's Western World, which is like this iconic little dive bar that has very authentic like country western music. And he was there having a beer.
Speaker: So, I mean, I love this from him. I cannot wait to go It's going to be so fun. that's so fun. I know. going to be good. I'm a real fan. Police, Sting, whatever. Yes, all of it. I'm in. Oh, but let me tell you, like, we knew we were going to do this, and we had our daughter over with her roommate on Sunday,
Speaker: And we were telling her we were going to And she was like, oh, that sounds fun. And I said, do you know who Sting is? now ah are you serious? Well, she would know if you played a song.
Speaker: So she did know like one song. i was like, you don't know the police? She was like, no. And her roommate was like, no, I've never heard of them. So we did play them a song and they were like, okay, I kind of know that song, but I'm not. gosh I was like, oh my God, we failed some way. Like, how do you not know who this thing is? i know that's a tragedy. ah Haven't they seen Footloose?
Speaker: ah You know, they make that reference, Kathy, in Kathy's favorite movie. He's like, don't you know Police? He's like, I see them behind you. so anyway, I'll let you guys know. But um my friend saw him last night said it was an amazing show. So I'm excited. no well um I'm jealous. That sounds like a lot of fun. I am too. Like a good date night.
Speaker: That sounds nice. It's date night. Yeah. And fun. Like And fun. on A fun date night. Yeah. I mean, they're all fun, but like... They're all, I just want to get that in there. They're all fun, honey. They're all fun. no um Okay. On today's show, we're going to talk about what's the buzz, um nice versus kind, and what's for dinner. But before we get into it, I just want to remind you guys to please hit that subscribe button.
Speaker: We're trying to get our podcast to grow and we would love it for you to hit that button and invite your favorite fishes to jump in and join our conversation. Thank All right, what's the buzz?
Speaker: Well, I think big news happening that I feel like I wanna talk about is Christina Applegate. You know, for years she was diagnosed with MS. And she's just now coming out saying that she has been misdiagnosed.
Speaker: She does not have MS, but they don't know what's wrong with her. She's still having all these health issues where she can't work, she can't walk well. she's mess. She really has affected her life.
Speaker: Physically. What do you guys think about this news? I think this is ah crazy news to me. um First of all, she was diagnosed, I believe, in 21.
Speaker: so they've been treating her for five years for this. And she hasn't gotten any better. In fact, she stated in an article that she's worse.
Speaker: yeah Yeah. Which ah could be malpractice maybe. Yeah. But I guess her doctor was like, congratulations, you don't have MS. But then she's like, well what is wrong with me? She's like, I feel i feel worse because yeah I don't have a yeah reason why I feel so bad, you know? Right, right, right.
Speaker: And- I don't know. i i feel so bad for her. I do too. I think that this is a tragedy, actually. Because then you you kind of like, I would think if I were her, like, okay, we've been treating something that I don't have. What if we figured out what I do have and they treated it and I maybe wouldn't be in a wheelchair half the time or in pain or I mean, i i just... Well, it's It's an autoimmune disease, right? and we have we And we have that in our family. And i think what I don't understand is, like, she shes lives in a city where we have great medical facilities. And I think because of her being an actress, like, I would think her healthcare care would insurance would cut be...
Speaker: pretty good. So it's really scary. Like top notch. So it's very they missed this. I mean, she has to go to a top notch doctor to get yeah top notch care. i You know, I think um MS is a very tricky thing to diagnose though, because it doesn't have a blood test or it's not an easy way to diagnose it. So it's like, you know, you throw all these tests in a big bin and then you come out with like, it looks like a dog. It sounds like a dog. It must be a dog. I don't know how they figured out that it wasn't a dog.
Speaker: Well, there are markers in your blood, and then they take your lumbar punch and look at your spinal fluid. i mean, there ah and then there's other imaging and things like that.
Speaker: So there must be some things in her history that align, but I don't know. It's kind of, to me, it's... I'm like shocked by it, but she she must have something maybe related or something. Adjacent. Hopefully they figure it out and get her on a course of treatment that will well you know improve her quality of life.
Speaker: Like healthcare care is It is, I think, hard, right? To diagnose things accurately. Like, for instance, like, I don't know guys, if you saw in the news too, like Jalen Hurts, the quarterback for the Eagles. I did see that. Has a blood clot in his calf. He got like cleated by one of the other players. And now and now they said that he's got the clots in his lungs.
Speaker: yeah And now is like not going to be able to play. and they're like, you know, is this really true what's going on? Or did someone misdiagnose him?
Speaker: you know, yeah or are people lying to us? Like, i i don't know what's going on, but that seems serious. all my clos are serious yeah I mean, I think there's a lot of layers to it. I mean I think we could tumble down into the healthcare system and how it works and These two situations we're talking about with people who theoretically have resources, like good resources at their fingertips. Think about the people that don't.
Speaker: And I don't know. And it also like gets me into this whole thing of this assault on our medicine, scientific research. Like, i mean, it's this whole thing of, I don't know, we need to be doing better. Like it feels like in this day and age, like we should have more answers than not.
Speaker: Yeah. And it's just- Well, hopefully both of these people will get the correct diagnosis and the best care they can find and get treated and start feeling better. Yeah. So, yeah, we don't have the answers, but we're thinking about them.
Speaker: Yeah. Just kind of crazy. Just crazy. It's totally crazy. um All right. So something very like not heavy, not heavy is some fun TV is back. yeah So we are huge fans of The Diplomat. The Diplomat is back. Yes. But do not tell me if you've watched it yet, though, because I haven't seen an episode. I have watched it. I'm not going to tell you about it, but I did watch.
Speaker: Yeah. Hang on. It's good.
Speaker: I mean, I think storyline is like... humming along. It's good. I mean, I love Keri Russell's character. i think I've told you guys this before. I love how she is so quick and she's so smart. And so I'm like, I wish yeah my brain worked like that in real life. I realize she's playing a character, but she still has to like get it all out. But sometimes she does stick her foot in her mouth. I mean, she's not always like super smooth. Yeah. yeah I mean, she's good. It just makes her a little human. The character, a little human. Don't we all do that? Yeah. Yeah. um And I tell you what I'm excited about that um lands tonight is nobody wants the season three. I did not. I love season one. Me too. struggled a little bit with season two. And I feel like they're going to get their leggings back again for season three. Yeah.
Speaker: Their leggings. Their leggings, their footing, their footing back. Is that the same? Is that the same? Yeah, I mean, I feel the same way. I thought it was like season one was great. Season two was fine. So I will give season three a chance and see. Hopefully it'll be good I saw like a little clip of it and I think she might be moving in with him. it should be interesting.
Speaker: I'm here for it. I'm here for it. All right, you guys, I'm also going to confess that I did watch a movie by myself. Like I, I don't know where everybody was, but I was just like looking for something on TV and I went to, um i found Love Hypothesis. Have you guys seen this on TV? Okay, I actually watched this too. No. yeah Yeah. Okay, I absolutely loved it. I thought it was so light and so just, you know, easy to watch. And I love that they made the main character love interest cute and smart and kind.
Speaker: I thought it was pretty cute. What do you think? thought it was predictable and a little bit boring. Like Lily Reinhart is so cute, but... um Yeah, I mean, it's not something I would watch again. thought it was fine. Agree to disagree. thought it was adorable. You're wrong. And then Slow Horses. Kathy, you've gotten Kathy into Slow Horses, right? Oh, my God. It's so good. My husband and I are watching this show together, and he's like, do not watch it without me. No. No. But when you find something you can watch together, right? It's like kind of precious, at least for us. really like it. And actually, Small Horses is continuing. Like the writing is just smart and the acting is like top notch. it got renewed for another season?
Speaker: Well, this season is six that just dropped. So um I don't know if season seven is coming or not, but like six very good seasons consistently, in my opinion. It's a really well done show. Gary Oldman is hilarious. He's hilarious. He's very talented. Yeah. He's kind of gross, but he's good. hes wrote His character is like kind of gross, but also like...
Speaker: Smushy in some way. Like it's just good. Watch it. If you haven't watched Slow Horses, check it out. she I think it's on um Apple TV. yeah Okay. And then Kristen Bell kind of was making the news um talking about an experience she had flying. Right, Linda? Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. so I saw her doing an interview. um ah She was doing a podcast with this guy um who has written like these self-help books and she is a self-proclaimed like people pleaser. And she says how she is really trying to break this cycle because it's sort of a detriment to her that she's always trying to like go above, like she doesn't want people to be upset with her. And the incidents was like, she was on a plane. She asked for coffee with a little bit of cream the flight attendant gave her like cream with a little bit of coffee and she choked it down instead of like asking for a different one And then she got up and was like, could I have a cup of coffee with just like a little bit of cream? And they did it again.
Speaker: and she, in her head, she, you know, she's an actress. So she plays this thing where she's like, Do I say something? Do I not say something? i don't want to hurt her feelings. She's got so many people. I'm not sure, but I can't choke this down again, blah, blah, blah. And so she ends up getting a cup of coffee that she actually can choke down, you know, enjoy. but she said this is like a lifelong struggle for her, um trying to be true to herself, but like also she doesn't want people to be upset with her.
Speaker: So her kindness is too much. And she's trying to set up boundaries for herself. I struggle with this too sometimes when I'm ordering something and I don't like it, but it's like even a cup of coffee now is not inexpensive. So it's like, I don't want to pretend like something's good.
Speaker: and is it bad to say, i don't love this. Could I have it this way instead? I struggle with that too. Are you going to spit in it? Like, I'm not trying to be mean, but this, I don't want this. Right. yeah Right.
Speaker: but It is, it it is a tricky thing. It's a simple example, but it is, I also struggle with that. It's like, be polite no matter what. And so like Matthew McConaughey was kind of in a different way.
Speaker: i can't believe I'm talking about Matthew McConaughey, but I am. But he is like all over lately talking about things. And one of his things that he's talking about is... um talking about, i don't want to raise, uh, what'd he say? I don't want, what's his thing? I don't, his thing is he makes a distinction. He wrote like a book of poems and prayers. I think it's called like the nice guy versus the good man.
Speaker: Right. And he's like, nice guys are passive. I want to instill people to be good men and like have values have set boundaries fight for what's right.
Speaker: He also is very much like invest in yourself, practice grace and kindness, self-forgiveness.
Speaker: um He's like, you know, you're going to have days that you have like green, yellow, red lights of like things in your life that are, you know, good, middle, terrible. And like, how do you navigate all those things? And he,
Speaker: he has It's like a whole mantra of like how he lives. it's pretty like cool I think it's actually very cool to like if you dive into it, like how you know to make the most of every day.
Speaker: And he says, like when you're in those red life moments, which I think we all have, I have them. like you want to just It's a screeching halt moment. And you're like, what do I do?
Speaker: And he's like, you know, you have to just like persist and keep your head down and like move through it. And maybe sometimes you can see it, sometimes you don't, but all red lights turn into green eventually. So he's all like about positive, like force, which I like, you know, because life can be a downer sometimes, right?
Speaker: But I think it's even deeper than that. Like, I think he's saying, you know, it's not enough to just be You know, I'm not interested in just raising and nice guy. I'm interested in raising a good man.
Speaker: Like, and we need to think about that. Those two, those two things are different, which kind of got us thinking about we're like, we're, I'm raising girls, you're raising kids. But it got me thinking about particularly my daughter. Like I kind of want to do something similar of, you know, nice versus kind.
Speaker: Right. Yeah. So that's, so that kind of got us thinking about how is that, how can we raise our kids to be kind?
Speaker: Sometimes you're nice, but how do we raise them to be kind and take a stand and kind of like, like Kristen Bell, like it's okay to ask for something that's not working for you. It's okay to want to enjoy something that you're asking for, even if it's a, even if somebody is, if it's a service being provided to you. Mm-hmm.
Speaker: So let's jump in. So I feel like I am a people pleaser. Like I don't like confrontation a lot of times, but sometimes I can do it.
Speaker: i Like, I don't have a problem. Like if my food is bad to be like, I don't really like this or yeah like, maybe could you cook this a little bit more? But there are times I do have a hard time like saying, what's on my mind because I don't like to rock the boat.
Speaker: But then there are times that I can like, You had an example, I think, of like someone has food in their teeth. And I'm like, I always tell people when they have food in their teeth. I too. I think that's kind. don't want you to be embarrassed. Like this whole, like two hours we're at this party because you have like this black thing on your front, you know, central. So, um but like, you know, i need to be better about maybe...
Speaker: you know, saying more than I do. But at the same time, it's like, I don't want to hurt someone's feelings either, you know? And that's where I struggle, I think.
Speaker: It is hard. i agree. i mean, my politeness, it comes a little easier for me than kind. I'd like to think that I'm kind, but like polite is just like basic social standards, in my opinion, right? And it starts young. Like we ask our children to share. We ask them to be, you know, thoughtful. We ask them to...
Speaker: you know, do learn these set standards of life. And it's hard for them because children are generous, but they're also selfish little beasts. And then they like grow and you kind of want them to learn to be ah a polite person.
Speaker: But the kindness thing is something i think, you know, kind of evolves over time because you have to learn to set boundaries and be courageous. And that is hard. I mean, it's hard for me. I know. i Like being kind is...
Speaker: polite plus, in my opinion. So like kind of being polite and nice is just like the basics. But being kind is also like being all that, but then like also being courageous with like your feelings and your heart and your boundaries for yourself. And that for me can be very hard. I don't always...
Speaker: you know, want to be telling people how I really, really feel because it might hurt their feelings. And that's not necessarily good for me. it's maybe good for them, not good for me. I have some friends who are so good at it. They'll be like, we'll be out having drinks or something. We'll be doing something.
Speaker: And if somebody says something snarky or does something, I have some friends that will call them out right then. And they'll be like, what are you talking about? That's not nice. And the person will be like, either accept it or say, well, that's not what I meant or okay. you know But I'm not good about that. I have to work on that because I do feel like as an adult, I should be able to manage my feelings. Well, I think, I think you're making a, like a point of like, nice is just, is just basics, right? It's just everyday politeness, right? Like yeah we do need that in our world, like just to interact just in general. yeah But for me and how I think about kindness is, it's about genuine care, empathy, wanting, wanting what is good for somebody,
Speaker: even when it takes some courage for me to acknowledge that, right? Or take some effort. yeah Right? Like that's kind of what you're saying. Like hard. It can't, it's harder. It's a different litmus test. It's harder. Like, yeah. You know, like, you know, is it kind to tell a friend a white lie about something?
Speaker: i mean, you know, we talk about that in our house a lot. Like, I don't want to hurt somebody's feelings. I don't know if I really want to go there. But i you know, but it's nice that they asked me and we, i always try to leave from a place of kindness of that. i want people to tell me how they're feeling and what they want.
Speaker: So it's like, you know what, thank you for inviting me to this. This is not my thing. um But thank you for asking me. And, you know, maybe we can get together another time.
Speaker: But how would you feel if you invited like you were having a party and somebody was like, you know what, thanks for inviting me, but your dog drives me crazy and I can't be around your dog. So I'm going to say no.
Speaker: I think that's okay. I think it's okay to set boundaries of like, maybe you know maybe you don't like dogs. Maybe you're allergic to dogs. You're not saying that they're not welcome, but you know they're saying I want to calm only if I can do...
Speaker: and Only if I can X, Y, Z. And that's not totally fair. So I think it's sometimes it's it's kind to be included. I want you to be here. But I also have my own values, my own things.
Speaker: And I don't want to have to cave to make you comfortable. Yeah. Like that's not that's not fair. So, okay, it's not going work this time, but let's find another time. i can come to your house or we can meet out it we can meet out somewhere for a couple hours.
Speaker: Yeah. um But I think having somebody come and bring their dog and then it go crazy and you have a terrible time, they have a terrible time because you're trying they can tell you're unhappy.
Speaker: I think that just sets everybody up for a bad time. Yeah. maybe you think that I think there are other times where it's okay to not be kind to somebody and set some boundaries. Like if you are around somebody that just sucks the life out of you, like they only want to talk about themselves. They only, they're just like takers. i i I've sort of like limited my time with a few people like that recently because in my adult life, I am trying to like keep my circle a little smaller than it was when I was younger because I just don't have the energy for it anymore, to be totally honest. yeah But if there are people that constantly just want to ask my energy, you know, they want to get advice, that like they're just usurping my whatever,
Speaker: which I guess in some ways is flattering, but it just, I leave feeling exhausted. So I just limit that now as an adult, because it's not good for me to, you know, cause I take on your problems and I don't, I don't mind helping every once a while, but that can't be the focus of our friendship.
Speaker: I mean, yeah, kindness is, you know, it takes a lot of courage. I think there are people that you could be kind to and be like very, very truthful and give them tough love.
Speaker: But I think there are other friends or family members that tough love may not work. Yeah. Right. And I think that's like where the hardship is for me. Cause there's a fine line, I think. Yeah, there is.
Speaker: I think so too. And especially like, you know, with our immediate family, you know, I think what people, i will say something.
Speaker: i think what people in the world don't always understand is no matter who you are, no matter what your relationship is, you can't say whatever you want to them.
Speaker: without there being a possible consequence. So yeah you can't say mean things to people and not have a consequence. So kindness with especially your inner circle is so important because that really maintains your deep well relationship.
Speaker: I think you have to have empathy. Like you can't, like you said, say whatever you want just because It's the truth. Like yeah you have, you still have to have empathy for people. And I think in a clever way, what Matthew McConaughey is trying to say and what Kristen Bell is trying to say is there is a line between you being kind,
Speaker: ah and being thoughtful about other people, but also like knowing your own compass and you get to you get to decide what is right for you.
Speaker: And it's okay to be able to set boundaries of being like, you know what? I don't love this. And yeah i have dear yeah i have to I have to be uncomfortable with saying to somebody, you know what? I don't agree with you on that.
Speaker: That wasn't how... I don't like how you just treated that person or I don't like how you just treated me or i don't like how the situation was handled. And it's okay to stand up when it's uncomfortable.
Speaker: Like, you don't have to be cruel. Cruel and cruel and mean or kindness are not the same thing. Just because you have... stand up for yourself or do the right thing doesn't mean you're being cruel. yeah And that's what I'm trying to teach Johanna. It's like toxic friendships, somebody who's constantly looking out for themselves and never looking out for you and you just going along with it just because you don't want to rock the boat is not kindness. That's not a that's not a good friendship.
Speaker: And that's not a way I want her to live her life. yeah And I think that that's it. And I think that what they're trying to say is we need to be doing more of that, of being, having a compass and being able to like,
Speaker: be on the right path with ourselves instead of just looking away and being like, whatever, it's fine. It's fine. Bless your heart. It's fine. Don't you worry about it. No good. you know So it's a tricky thing. And I think it's just kind of a clever way, or at least i thought when we started talking about this, to maybe just be talking about it more. Yeah. I mean, it's huge. it It's so pervasive too. Just...
Speaker: you know, within your very tight friendships, your family, and then also your acquaintances. I mean, it's, I recently just had somebody that was really unkind to somebody that i care about deeply and I'm done. Like, I'm not talking to you anymore. Well, I mean. You're mean and I don't want to mean person in my life. Yeah. Yeah. I mean.
Speaker: You know. It is what it is. But then I had this like really sweet, I had some friends over this weekend and one of them just sent me text saying, can I stop over? I have something for you. And she brought me over a fresh baked loaf of sourdough as a thank you for having everybody over.
Speaker: nice. Oh, that's so nice. How sweet is that? Yeah. I was like, oh well, especially she knows how to get to you because you love food. I love food. This is the, like, that's the doorway to my heart.
Speaker: um You know, and it's interesting too, right? Because I think also it got me thinking another big point of this is, and you talk about even our immediate family is that we don't always agree, right? um like I think I saw a lot of that. We did it like vacations this summer and it's like you having conversations and just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean i'm I'm not being kind to you or I'm not listening to what you say. But I have, my ideals may be a little bit different than yours, but that's okay, right? I think the trick is to be able to have your own
Speaker: ideas of right and wrong and be able to be like, okay, I don't totally see that way, but you get to you. I see that you see it this way and be able to kind of take that in and not judge me or cut me off because I don't see everything exactly how you are.
Speaker: That's being kind in my opinion. And that's what I feel like you know, truthfully, I feel like we all could use a little bit more of is a little bit more of that. yeah And I think that's why they're talking about this. I'm being completely honest. It is hard. I mean, and they're both grownups. So, i mean, they're both like working on it still, like we're all a work in progress. And I think that's okay. It's good to be mindful that you're yeah trying to grow and be more complete as ah human and whatever that looks like for you.
Speaker: Yeah, I think brett practicing grace, I think, is like a good term. You know, give people the benefit of the doubt. And, you know everybody has their own opinions.
Speaker: But let's practice being nicer. Or kinder kinder to people. kinder You know what I kind of say to Johanna sometimes? I'm like, you know, Linda, you're pretty good about this too, but Kathy does it in a different way that I've always been in awe of. of like She definitely practices kindness. I don't think she would identify it. like She would identify herself as kind.
Speaker: But Kathy is like i like, she has this this row this arrow, and this is what she wants to do. And she'll just look at you, and she'll just, you know,
Speaker: okay i Like, okay, I hear what you're saying. And then she just... You know, she does it how she wants. You think you've had this enlightened conversation you're all around the same page. And then she's like, nope, that that is not good for me. That is not what I I'm not doing that. and I'm not going to get in a debate with you about it. I told you how I feel and now just going to go my own way. And she does it in such a way that you're like...
Speaker: Wait, what happened here? Yeah, and it's and it's done, right? It's okay, you do you. Girl, you belong in the South. I mean- Well, I never realized- The steel magnolia thing real. But I don't like confrontation, so I guess maybe that's why. i just, I hear you, but- I don't love it either, but I feel like if I don't say it out loud, sometimes it I feel like I'm stuffing down my feelings and it doesn't and it I don't like how that feels. So I wish that I had a little bit more mix of like Kathy where I'm like, I hear you. It's fine, but I'm not changing my principles, but I'm going to do it how I want. But with me, I'm like, no, and this is why I'm not doing it this way.
Speaker: You know, I don't think I'm unkind about it, but I do feel like I have to talk it out to death. So I i don't know if that's the better way either. i don't know. You talker. You are. You are a talker.
Speaker: know. I know. I know that. I mean, you always know where you stand. mean. Which is good. And you are a kind human. And I think, you know. You both are. We all are. Little tiny things you can do out there in the world is like, oh like hold doors open. Say thank you. Smile. like Well, that feels like people have basic niceness. That's just being nice. Yeah.
Speaker: I think people in general are kind. It's just sometimes people lose their way and they have to I don't know, maybe some people are lost forever.
Speaker: Like we'll always be Our values are there, but people definitely have to start thinking about how they're treating people. Cause I think some people are definitely not kind and definitely fake nice, which is not a good good thing.
Speaker: No, I agree. I think what we can do is like, like I, Johanna and I talk about this lot. we talk about this with Riley. It's like, I think we can just start with ourselves and, and just lead with by example.
Speaker: And like, you hold your own principles. Yes, like that. Hold your own principles. And you know, that's all you can do. And maybe that will, you know, keep the ball rolling for the next person that somebody has interaction with. I love that. Be like, be courageous about living your life, you know? Be courageous.
Speaker: Yes. Yeah, you can do it. Yes. yeah um I just wanted to just like, and but then we'll like definitely move on and um I just wanted to mention that like as we talked about like the difference of kindness, like the big thing that I wrote down was just to think about kindness isn't always saying the right thing or making everyone happy. Sometimes it's telling the truth with compassion.
Speaker: Sometimes it's setting a boundary. Sometimes it's showing up for someone when it's inconvenient. And sometimes kindness means allowing yourself to be the person who's not going to please everybody. And I think just to end on that note, I think it's okay to remember that.
Speaker: We don't always have to people please. That's exactly right. And it doesn't make you a bad person. it makes you a kind person for yourself. For yourself, yourself yeah. and for the And even the person you're interacting with because you're not you're being truthful. Right. I like it.
Speaker: Anyway, I think it's something ah it's an interesting conversation and something to maybe keep keep talking about.
Speaker: All right, you guys, what's for dinner? Okay, so I have dinner this week. So I don't know if our listeners know this about me, but I love to watch a cooking show. Like I've been doing it for as long as cooking shows have been out. My husband always shakes his head like, why, you know, do you do this?
Speaker: But my, like, I've been obsessed with Mary Berry for like the last year. And for those of you that don't know, I think she's in her early 90s now. She has all these cooking shows. She's been cooking for like 60 years.
Speaker: and I don't know how you find these people either. Like, I had never even heard of Mary Berry. Oh, God. I love her. know? Kathy, you watch cooking shows like a hundred does? I did not know Mary Berry. And then you said that to me. And I was like, oh, she is cute. She's a doll. She's so adorable. But anyway, I love it because, you know, she lives in the UK. And so she makes very, you know, British food, which I don't always eat here. So anyway, this week, we're doing a little spin on Mary Berry's Irish stew. And, um,
Speaker: I made it over the weekend and it's super simple. I made it with beef. She makes hers with lamb and it's just simply browning your beef that has been coated in flour in a big casserole, taking the beef out, adding onions and carrots, and then putting everything back in pouring over beef broth, and then slicing potatoes and making a pretty little pattern on top and popping it in the oven for a couple hours. And it comes out very tender and flavorful. There's some thyme and a couple bay leaves, salt pepper. I mean, that's it. It's super basic. It's very like economical because you use like a chuck roast. So it's not like an expensive cut of meat, but because you braise it for so long, it just falls apart. It's very tender. And I served it this weekend to my daughter and her roommate, my husband and I. And they liked it so much that we did have some leftovers and I sent it with her and they ate it for lunch the next day. So that's nice try it out. It's very simple. It's going to be in the show notes.
Speaker: you know An inexpensive meal for your family. One pot meal, basically. might do that. I'm having some girlfriends over on Saturday. Maybe I'll try it. Yeah, it's super easy. Sounds good.
Speaker: Yeah. A nice joy meal. Yeah. With some, with some bread, some bread and a side salad. That's how I served it. And it was great. So, you know what we just made, and I should have taken a picture of it for you guys is, you know, we went apple picking and I just made homemade strudel.
Speaker: Oh, yes it was delicious. And that would pair really nicely with, it would, i made ah apple crisp dessert. Yeah. Although I'm saying this to Kathy and I'm looking at her face and she's like, I don't like cooked fruit.
Speaker: just like, nope, I'm out. You lost me with the cooked apples. I know. Everyone's like... How can you not like apple pie or strudel? But I don't.
Speaker: I do like it when the apples are cut and they're coated in the cinnamon sugar. i like eating oats raw. Okay. Okay. I just don't like it. You and Riley have very similar tastes that way.
Speaker: He is the same. Like he likes to help make the strudel because you have to stretch it Stretch out the dough, yeah. I should put it online when we make it sometimes so you guys can see it gets like really paper thin. So you have to really stretch it. Yeah. So he likes that part, but he won't eat it.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. Oh gosh. More for me. i don't know. It's a texture. It must be a texture thing. I don't know. I mean, I think you guys are crazy, but you do you. And I mean that in the most kind way. Yeah.
Speaker: yeah Happy cooking. Happy eating. i won't take offense to that. Yeah. I meant it nice. I promise. Okay. Well, we want to thank you for listening to our podcast and letting us sisters jump into your day. Please make sure to follow, rate, and review us.
