Iain hosts Michael to discuss deadline day, which started with the news that Isak had been sold and ended with the uncertainty of an uncompleted Wissa Sign Sheet.

The lads discuss Will Osula's short-lived sale to Frankfurt, snigger at the non-completion of Guehi to the Bindippers, and look at one or two other interesting deadline day moves.

Introduction: Meet the Hosts and Guest

00:00:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to The Daily Newcastle. My name is Ian Mackay. I'm your host tonight. I'm joined by the font of all knowledge, football related, because he's printed some lists of Mr. Michael Grameslaw.

Deadline Day Chaos and Deal Dynamics

00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael, have you got exhausted trying to follow what's going on this deadline day?
00:00:36
Michael Grahamslaw
I have, mate. It's one of those. I'm not used to Newcastle United being busy on deadline day. You'd think we'd ah we sold a mediocre Swedish striker or something. um I say mediocre. He is probably one of the best in the world. I'm just having a laugh. But yeah, it's been a busy day.
00:00:52
Michael Grahamslaw
um Some news that we were expecting. Some news that we definitely weren't expecting and then didn't come to fruition, which we'll talk about a bit later. ah But yeah, it's it's been a bit of an exhausting day. I'm kind of glad it was over at seven o'clock.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, officially over at 7 o'clock.

Isak's Record Sale Debate

00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, they've all got the um additional two hours if they've submitted a deal sheet in before 7 o'clock to get through till 9 to get their paperwork in.
00:01:16
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there might be one or two surprises waiting for us by the time we've finished recording and go back to check what we missed while we're talking.
00:01:26
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:01:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know you're not going to miss anything. You've got all your video video printers going as we speak. But yes, so it's deadline day. and Part one, we can't really start this deadline day without focusing first on news I woke up to this morning, because I went to bed quite early last night.
00:01:44
Michael Grahamslaw
Sim.
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Alexander Isaac sold to Liverpool for £125 million, billion pounds ah new British transfer record. um But ah so many questions arising from that, Michael.
00:02:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Have we given him away too cheap? Have we started looking really ridiculous because we said we wouldn't sell for less than 150 and fifty and up with two strikers in? Did they cave?
00:02:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
What your thoughts on Isaac's sale?
00:02:17
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, i think it's one of those where I woke up to it as you did as well. And I'll be honest, when I saw it, I was... I was quite furious because we didn't have Johan Wisser in the door. that looked That looked like it wasn't going to happen, to be honest. The quote at the start of the day was £65 million for him. And I'm thinking, there's no way on earth we're paying that.
00:02:38
Michael Grahamslaw
And then you see we're buying them for, well, Liverpool are buying Isaac for £125. What happened to £150 or bust? We've just all of a sudden got down to deadline day and gone.
00:02:50
Michael Grahamslaw
Actually, yeah, you know what?
00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:02:51
Michael Grahamslaw
You can have them for a cut price deal because we can't really be bothered to deal with them anymore. And it's a real shame that it's 125 and not a bit more. um boat It's also one of those where it probably did need to happen.

Impact of Isak's Departure on Newcastle

00:03:07
Michael Grahamslaw
And I think this transfer window has probably done us a lot of harm, despite on paper not being you know that bad. Because Seshko, Eketike, obviously I wasn't privy to many of the negotiations before those two, but those two negotiations played out in public.
00:03:26
Michael Grahamslaw
And it was, right, we want this amount, right, we'll offer it. And then the amount goes up and up and up. It was like Mark last year. And what I think this has kind of shown that if you're patient in negotiations with Newcastle, Newcastle will fold.
00:03:44
Michael Grahamslaw
And that's something that for me... I'm really not comfortable with. Shesko, who we're going to pay more than Man United. Why are we paying more than the asking price?
00:03:56
Michael Grahamslaw
It's something that even then, it didn't really make that much sense. I guess we were just hoping, oh, they've accepted Man Utd's bid.
00:04:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you're right. You're right.
00:04:04
Michael Grahamslaw
If we offer more, maybe they reject Man Utd's bid, something like that. And it it kind of just feels like, I'm not going to say amateurish because I don't think it is that, but I think it's they've realised that we need to do something a little bit extra to get players to Newcastle.
00:04:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:04:22
Michael Grahamslaw
And because of the severity of the Alexander Rezac situation, we've been desperate and we've played our cards. We've basically shown both of our cards in blackjack before the big dealer even knows he's up card.
00:04:34
Michael Grahamslaw
So it's it's one of those where we've been in a bit of trouble. I haven't really liked the window at all because of that, but it's over. We're in a decent place now, but I think there will be teams, in if we go for anyone in January,
00:04:50
Michael Grahamslaw
there will be teams that think we can have Newcastle's pants down here. And based off this window, they might be right.
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I think I hear what you're saying, of course. I do. I was surprised that it was 1-2-5. I heard 1-30 at the same time. I don't know if there's some add-ons that will take it to that. and
00:05:06
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But let's go for 1-2-5. That seems to be what everybody is settling on. It did look a little bit like we had caved. I was thinking, oh, well, that's good because it must be sure that they must be sure that they're getting a second striker in. So I was taking a bit of a positive spin on that.
00:05:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Although you're absolutely right, when you when you then looked at the detail, it didn't look like Strand-Larsen or Wisser was going to be a economically available, shall we call it.
00:05:22
Michael Grahamslaw
Makes sense, yeah.
00:05:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We will get on to Johan Wisser in a minute or two. um I think I'm going to have a much bigger podcast discussion tomorrow about the overall transfer window, which
00:05:34
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:05:46
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:05:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
When we do the pluses and minuses, I think we're going to conclude that we actually had a really quite a good window.

Newcastle's Transfer Strategy: Successes and Concerns

00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it was a window that we went through without a sporting director and without a chief executive.
00:06:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think maybe the lack of that sort of nows, professional nows at the top, is perhaps why our cards have been a little bit publicly played or we've showed our hand too soon.
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we were shopping in the wrong market, Michael, to start with. It's no good us going after strikers that we know that Chelsea or Liverpool or Man United are going to want if we don't have to.
00:06:20
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah?
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, they kept very quiet about Valtimada and it was Bayern Munich being tight that meant that they missed out.
00:06:33
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:06:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But again, it's it's ah it's the stealth approach that works for us. and But Isaac's gone. I think it's good that that draws a line. We don't have to try and reintegrate him or have that.
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
bloody turning up for training at four o'clock on his own for the next four months, which would have just been an absolute soul-destroying nightmare to watch.
00:06:54
Michael Grahamslaw
It would have been a pain.
00:06:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it can't be good for the morale of the team.
00:06:56
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:06:59
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:06:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the morale of the team will be lifted when they see German wonder kid and the Premier League striker who scored more non-penalty goals last season than anybody else.
00:07:00
Michael Grahamslaw
would agree.
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
That will lift the team. Johan Wisser. um johann wisser Similar situation to Isak really, particularly when he issued his statement last night, but chairre which we discussed was a little bit more detail about having written assurances that they were going to let him go.
00:07:23
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:07:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
But still is still not the right way of leaving. We we all wish that we could have signed somebody like Eze, who tonked in a goal, unfortunately disallowed, 10 minutes before he went off for his medical Arsenal.
00:07:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:45
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, you know, it's not a perfect world. What do you think about the WISA deal at 55 mil? I think we have overpaid a little bit, but then circumstances dictate, don't they?
00:07:56
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, 100% correct. I think when you sit there and it's the desperation stage, which Newcastle have been in, it makes people do strange things. Personally, ah feel like it would have been too much of a risk to wait until January eight to make this deal happen, even if who you were saving 25 million because we've already lost...
00:08:18
Michael Grahamslaw
I don't want to say seven points because there's no there's no guarantee we won every game, but we've dropped seven points, five of which I think we would have had if we had top-level striker.
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:08:28
Michael Grahamslaw
Because I think we do beat Aston Villa. I think we do beat Leeds. And I think... the way Liverpool played, there was a good chance we'd get a draw.
00:08:39
Michael Grahamslaw
I wouldn't have said beat them. I think as soon as you take the lead against Liverpool, they're a different beast. We have a striker up front. It's if, buts, maybes. I think that's pretty much the the side of things. you know So we've already lost, in my opinion, five points in three games from that.
00:08:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:08:55
Michael Grahamslaw
And I think you look at that five points, that's the difference in some seasons between Champions League and not qualifying for, well, the Europa League. you know You'd be in the conference, maybe not even in Europe at all, particularly if that goes on for, what, four months.
00:09:09
Michael Grahamslaw
So I think Wissett will end up paying for himself, or at least the extra. um I do think it's a great signing. I am completely with you with the way he went again about things. um It's almost bad for football that we've made the signing.
00:09:25
Michael Grahamslaw
And I really don't agree with the way he conducted himself.
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:09:28
Michael Grahamslaw
um What I would love is for him to come in and for Eddie Howe to sit him down and go, that but you can't do that here, by the way. ah You pull anything like that with us, you're out the door straight away and you won't be going to a better club.
00:09:41
Michael Grahamslaw
You'll be going to a club that's maybe a feeder club. Tell you what, we'll send you to somewhere in the championship and you can let them see your talents. Because as far as I'm concerned, players shouldn't be able to do that. Izak did it to us.
00:09:56
Michael Grahamslaw
Visser has done it to Brentford. And, you know, maybe we're in a better position um overall. We've definitely not got the best striker in the world right now, but Brentford are a team that's crippled because of that scenario.
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
know
00:10:09
Michael Grahamslaw
And ah it's disgusting to see, even though we're on the the benefit of it this time. But you don't like to see it, do you?
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, Michael, just before we go to our first break, let me reassure you, by the way, if you're worried you about us having dropped seven points because we took one point from the away match at Villa and the home match with Liverpool last year.
00:10:32
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh, yes.
00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And whilst we beat all of the promoted teams, we got a draw at Leeds. So we're only two points behind where we were last year. So i think we I think there's still plenty of time for us to make that up and be challenging for ah Champions League spot this year.
00:10:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
So don't worry. Words well spoken about Wissler. Of course, we wish him all the best now he's with us. We want him to score. We want him to beat last year's 19 non-penalty goal total, at least.
00:11:02
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:11:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, it does leave a little bit of a bad taste. I guess once he's got the black and white shirt on and he scored twice, that we will that will be the yeah ah mouthwash. That means we haven't got that bad taste in our mouth anymore.
00:11:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it'll keep coming back when we see Izak scoring for Liverpool, no doubt.
00:11:16
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:11:21
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:11:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, that's those two. Both deals done. and quite early in the transfer window. There was a lot of other shenanigans going on, and we'll get onto that in part two.

Newcastle's Squad Needs and Potential Solutions

00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Meanwhile...
00:12:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And let's talk more soccer, Michael. What was going on this afternoon?
00:12:32
Michael Grahamslaw
Please, no.
00:12:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
and We thought our deals had been done. We got our striker in. Still plenty of the transfer window open. kind of half hoping that there might have been a sneaky little loan deal for a midfield player maybe.
00:12:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
There were one or two rumours to that end, but nothing appeared like Suddenly, on the wire, misfiring centre forward.
00:12:47
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:12:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if he's played enough to even call him that, because he really just made his... He started his first game against Leeds, didn't he?
00:13:05
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:13:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But um William Asula, who is a great dancer, and a fabulous influence within the dressing room, but hasn't done very much on the pitch for us.
00:13:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
he was He was going for 30 million to Frankfurt.
00:13:22
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where did that come from?
00:13:23
Michael Grahamslaw
Insane.
00:13:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where did that come from? i mean, i've I've got to add that just as we were going to record, um the news came through that that deal has fallen through. So apparently because we need to retain him as cover for Wisser and Volta Marder.
00:13:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:13:42
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I have a sneaking suspicion that that means that there was going to be a sneaky loan deal for a striker and that we could send Asula away, but sell him for 30 million because that is, what, 20 million profit?
00:13:57
Michael Grahamslaw
Insanity. Yeah.
00:13:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um or Or even send him out on loan because he was going to be surplus to requirements and then suddenly he wasn't. So I wonder if it will emerge. What do you think? Do you think we had ah another striker coming in on loan and it's fallen through?
00:14:12
Michael Grahamslaw
I think I think maybe the plan was to... I don't think we had another sign lined up just from the lack of talk from anywhere about another striker.
00:14:24
Michael Grahamslaw
I feel like those kind of things, usually you see one or two roomers and even if it's an untrustworthy sources, you still get excited on deadline day. But what I did see a few hours ago, and it's why I said to you beforehand I need to check the Azula deal before we go on, um was because I'd seen that the £30 million
00:14:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:14:44
Michael Grahamslaw
um At around, what I think it was 2 o'clock, it started talking about Asula going for £30 million. and And then by 5, 6 o'clock, I'd seen that Eintracht Frankfurt were going to loan him for the season.
00:14:56
Michael Grahamslaw
with the option to buy for 30 million um at the end.
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
right
00:15:00
Michael Grahamslaw
And I was thinking, you know what? That makes a lot more sense because they need a backup striker themselves. They signed Burkhardt from Mainz, great striker, but they need a backup.
00:15:10
Michael Grahamslaw
30 million if Osula plays how he does for Denmark.
00:15:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just as little So, what else? What else?
00:15:14
Michael Grahamslaw
well, the under-21s of Denmark, it's a decent deal.
00:15:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
What What
00:15:16
Michael Grahamslaw
If he plays like he does for us, well, they just wouldn't activate it. um But then i was seeing more and more that that just wasn't the case at all in the end. And what I think happened was I think we were willing to let Asula go on a loan where we could recall him at any time.
00:15:33
Michael Grahamslaw
So if Volta Marder gets injured um or just doesn't fit the bill, we can say, right, actually, we want him back and we want him back now.
00:15:44
Michael Grahamslaw
And they would have to go through with it. a bit like m Chelsea have done with Boiko U in Sunderland. um I think it was something like that. But in the end, apparently we just need him too much, which I'll be honest, at...
00:15:58
Michael Grahamslaw
was it 10 past eight and still not seeing the, uh, the Whistler deal complete. It's making me a little bit shaky.
00:16:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
if we
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have submitted the deal sheet for WISA.
00:16:10
Michael Grahamslaw
The deal sheet. Yeah.
00:16:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you you were reassuring me that it was definitely going to go through just a little while ago, Michael. So maybe I've got false confidence that it's going to happen. But you don't put a deal sheet through for it to fall, do you?
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's done his medical. There's nothing going to trip us up on that.
00:16:26
Michael Grahamslaw
Unless you're Liverpool.
00:16:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we will come on to one or two other business today in three. So what about this? clubs business to today um in part three
00:16:35
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
what about this additional full-back maybe that we could have had on loan that I know you had your eye on or an additional midfield player. Now, Fratezi was talked about for several weeks.
00:16:52
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think we are we've got enough strength to take on the Champions League?
00:16:58
Michael Grahamslaw
I think it's it's one of those where... Yeah, i definitely wanted another i definitely wanted either another full-back in or a creative midfielder because I think when you when you watch the Leeds game, it's abundantly clear that when we're missing that sort of James Madison-style player who just can get in between the lines, play that little through ball.
00:17:17
Michael Grahamslaw
And Bruno did it a couple of times in that first half and it was it was fantastic.
00:17:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:17:22
Michael Grahamslaw
um Didn't lead to anything, unfortunately, because you know we had a striker who's a right-winger, really, in my mind. um But I think it was one of those where a creative midfielder has been on the cards for years and it hasn't happened. So ah can't see be I can't see why it would have been done on a deadline day.
00:17:40
Michael Grahamslaw
think it would have been something would have tried to do earlier. And then after Matt Target went on loan to Middlesbrough, I was almost certain that we'd bring in a ah young fullback. um A left-back in particular.
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Me too.
00:17:51
Michael Grahamslaw
i know we yeah I know we've got Dan Byrne, Kieran Trippi, Artino Liveramento that can all cover, but Lewis Hall is our only real left-back. And Alex Murphy, I guess, is maybe an option there as well.
00:18:05
Michael Grahamslaw
ah Leo Sahar's on the right side, so maybe if we needed to, he could come in on the right. Same with harris Harrison Ashby. But they're not really at the level you'd want. so I was kind of hoping that someone somewhere...
00:18:19
Michael Grahamslaw
ah maybe in sort of the German league or something like that, we'd have a ah left back. We could loan for a season, something like that. Because if Lewis Hall gets injured, we're not in trouble, but then we don't have a, we don't have a left back.
00:18:33
Michael Grahamslaw
And I know Tino's better on the left than he is on the right, but there is one day where that will change. Yeah.
00:18:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. To be fair though, what you've just said has what you've just said has encouraged me if Howe is thinking that Alec Murphy on the left and Leo Sahar can step in for the handful of games they may need to step in for, um then I'm pleased he thinks they're good enough to do that and he doesn't have to plug any gaps.
00:18:55
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:19:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
we might We might find out that that's different when it comes to January and that we've got full-backs on our shopping list. Because to be fair, Trippier needs replacing at the end of this season at the very latest anyway.
00:19:09
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah. 100%.
00:19:14
Michael Grahamslaw
hundred percent
00:19:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah you know I mean, he's an amazing athlete that keeps going, but he is getting on to the veteran stage now um And, you know, you've got to you've got to have somebody understudying and replacing um him.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know that's meant to be Tino, but he could be a left back now.
00:19:33
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:19:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've got to have somebody to come through and and be be well-versed on what's going on before Trippier switches across into coaching. and Anything else that we could have got? I mean, I just thought Kobe Maynou was available for for a great price and he's a superb player and he's that number 10 even though Man U don't use about it I think he would have been a super buy
00:19:57
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.

Liverpool's Missed Opportunities and Defensive Weaknesses

00:20:00
Michael Grahamslaw
I think it's one of those, though, where Man United, I don't think, will ever... massive ever At least for the next five or so years. i don't think they'll try it I don't think they'll accept selling to Newcastle United because a player like Kobe Maynou has the potential to do so much.
00:20:17
Michael Grahamslaw
And I think in Maynou's mind, he does want to stay at Man United, but Amorim doesn't want to play him. So I think when he's put that loan request in, he's gone, right, this idiot isn't going to be here in a year.
00:20:31
Michael Grahamslaw
Send me out on loan for a year and then... when he's when he's gone, I'll come back and I'll be as just as good for you as I was before.
00:20:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah be hoping Ten Hag comes back because Ten Hag loved Meirnu didn't he
00:20:44
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, it's it I mean, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ten Hag all ah sacked within the same three days.
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah the dream team the dream team yes excellent
00:20:51
Michael Grahamslaw
Man, you're getting the band back together.
00:20:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look, let's ah let's pause there and we'll have a little bit of a look around one or two of the deals that have gone through for other clubs or not in part three. If you could give us the... yeah ah I'll tell you what, Michael, I'll give you this and then you can come in afterwards and do the Zencastr advert. Are you ready?
00:21:13
Michael Grahamslaw
I'm ready.
00:21:27

Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent. Thank you very much, Michael. Now, I want to dive straight in to have a little bit of a smirk at the smug bin dippers who are going to banter us for the rest of our lives about getting Alexander Rezac on the cheap.
00:21:55
Michael Grahamslaw
No worries.
00:22:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But their dream transfer window also included picking up future England captain Mark Gahey from Crystal Palace at a knockdown 35 million.
00:22:10
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's be honest, that probably by half of him when we were trying to get him last summer.

Aston Villa's Transfer Moves

00:22:26
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, not even that.
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But apparently, apparently, that deal has not gone through. Now, you've got a little bit more information on that because that just happened as we were coming to air.
00:22:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's the story?
00:22:38
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah. Yeah, so Liverpool had basically made contact with Palace a little while ago. um The deal was basically all going through. Very similar to the Alexander-Rizak deal.
00:22:49
Michael Grahamslaw
But Crystal Palace wanted to keep Marquette. Marquette reacted to the this the deal in a perfect way, kept on playing, scored a beautiful goal against Aston Villa.
00:23:00
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah. professionalism love to see it from the Crystal Palace lads and it looked like both of them were going to get that move ah but when Crystal Palace have tried to sign Eagle from Brighton be honest there's not a lot of players who've gone from Brighton to Crystal Palace and
00:23:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:17
Michael Grahamslaw
And for good reason. They've got a little rivalry going on there for those that don't follow football in the South.
00:23:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh
00:23:23
Michael Grahamslaw
um But it's actually come out that Ego has decided to go to West Ham United instead and play under Graham Potter. um Maybe he just watched the game at the weekend and not the abysmal performance against Sunderland or Chelsea.
00:23:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
but but
00:23:36
Michael Grahamslaw
But basically Crystal Palace couldn't get a replacement in.
00:23:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:23:40
Michael Grahamslaw
And although Liverpool put the deal sheet in at 7 o'clock, which tells you Liverpool still thought the deal was going to go ahead, Crystal Palace at 8 o'clock said, yeah, it's not happening anymore and pulled the plug.
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:23:51
Michael Grahamslaw
So Liverpool stuck with us three centre-backs, Van Dijk, Canadi and Gomez. And considering Gomez is, well, more crocked than Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock,
00:24:04
Michael Grahamslaw
They're pretty much down to two centre-backs for the next four months, which could be very interesting.
00:24:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I said to you, it's not just an Achilles heel, that Liverpool defence. It's an Achilles leg, really. I know they're absolutely superb array of talent in midfield and going forward.
00:24:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they've just added the best striker in the world to that.
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they're going to have to work quite hard if they need to score four or five every game because they're letting and three or four in. I mean, they let two in against Newcastle with 10 men. and We haven't scored against anybody else this season.
00:24:25
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:24:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, ah yeah, I'm I'm hoping that's what's going to trip them up because we don't want we don't want some teams spending over £400 million in one transfer window when

Nicolas Jackson and Volta Marder Transfer Sagas

00:24:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
they're champions already, steamrolling their way through to the title.
00:24:48
Michael Grahamslaw
No.
00:24:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
want some competition in there. Now, tell me, what's happened at Villa?
00:24:55
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:24:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were after Harvey Barnes, what's he called?
00:25:01
Michael Grahamslaw
How are we, Alias?
00:25:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Liverpool Harvey, Harvey Elliott. And there were were they they were sniffing after Jadon Sancho as well.
00:25:03
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:25:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Has that gone through?
00:25:08
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, so as it stands, they've put deal sheets for both players. It's interesting that um the Elliott one hasn't been confirmed yet because I was saying around 6, 7 o'clock that everything was pretty much done deal there.
00:25:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:25:24
Michael Grahamslaw
and With Sancho, it's a bit more of an interesting one because obviously Villa's biggest issue PSR-wise has been wages... in comparison to revenue.
00:25:34
Michael Grahamslaw
Now, the two loan deals they did last year, Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford, they were the deals that were supposed to get them into the Champions League and get that extra commercial income. So the fact that Jadon Sancho is on almost, well, pretty much the same amount as Marcus Rashford, and they're still making that deal, is um it's quite a concerning one, I think, if you're an Aston Villa fan. But at the same time,
00:25:59
Michael Grahamslaw
they've not ah They haven't scored a goal this year. they've they've been apps what the season They've been absolutely abysmal.
00:26:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:26:05
Michael Grahamslaw
So it looks like both deals are going to go through. I do really like the Harvey Elliott sale. I don't know about you, but I actually would have quite liked him in the deal for Izak if we could have got 110 plus Elliott.
00:26:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Me too.
00:26:16
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah. Yeah. harvielliot
00:26:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've mentioned that to that deal since we started talking about at the beginning of August. that was That was an obvious thing to include.
00:26:24
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah
00:26:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
To get us up to, so we got 150 million to us, but then Liverpool didn't have to go far over 100, really. and But yeah, good luck for them. They'll be good at Aston Villa, actually. And they do need something. Let's face it. They're one of the three teams that have started the Premier League worse than we have.
00:26:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they did look abject playing against us, but they were really dreadful against Crystal Palace.
00:26:45
Michael Grahamslaw
Insanity.
00:26:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Clueless.
00:26:50
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:26:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they have aspirations for Champions League.
00:26:52
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, 100%. Yeah.
00:26:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, got change.
00:26:55
Michael Grahamslaw
yeah and And then another deal which we actually spoke about this morning. and um Joe asked us, who what do we think would be chanting at the end of the day? We're Sarah Larson.
00:27:06
Michael Grahamslaw
And I actually said, I've got a really bad feeling it's going to be Jackson. Yeah. um And we're like, oh, no, it won't happen. As I said, the Chelsea's only issue is the fact there's not a permanent deal in there.
00:27:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow.
00:27:19
Michael Grahamslaw
And now I've got a i've got a ah got no information about this up except from what's already been in the press. um But Jackson was arguably a really good, well, a really solid option for Newcastle. It's not one fans would have wanted us to make, but it was a 15 million pound loan, well, million euros, should I say, loan fee which Fabrizio Romano counted 4 million is heavy.
00:27:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
i
00:27:44
Michael Grahamslaw
So I can only imagine what that is. And then another 55 million on top. So Nicholas Jackson would have ended up costing us 70 million euros, um which, you know, isn't that much more than Visser.
00:27:56
Michael Grahamslaw
But that was a deal that looked like it could have been on the cards at some point ah today if Bayern didn't come in for a second bid. But I think we're all very happy that that hasn't happened.
00:28:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And have Byung come in for a second bid.
00:28:10
Michael Grahamslaw
He is officially at Bayern now, yes. ah So Bayern Munich will be paying a total of £70 million for Nicolas Jackson.
00:28:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:28:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Blimey. Because it looked yesterday, when that was because he was in Munich and then got told to come back, wasn't he, when De Laat picked up the injury, I thought they were going to keep him.
00:28:24
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:28:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they have actually been able to work something out. Probably a clever ruse to winkle a little bit more money out of Bayern Munich, I would have thought.
00:28:33
Michael Grahamslaw
Potentially, yeah.
00:28:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, what's the one out of the blue that surprised you the most today?
00:28:39
Michael Grahamslaw
um To be honest, it's it hasn't. so The one that surprised me the most was Kolo Mawani's loan to ah Tottenham because I actually thought he was one that yeah he was one that could have ended up with us and because the Juventus deal fell through.
00:28:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Me too. Me too.
00:28:56
Michael Grahamslaw
Lewis Openda has now gone to Juventus. And then Kolo Mawani, you're sitting there and going, right, we've already got Volta Madre. if we just need a year until we can get you on Wisser on a free, let's bring in Kolo Mawani for a year on a loan.
00:29:12
Michael Grahamslaw
um But I think Tottenham have offered a a fee at the end of it. We wouldn't have. And to be honest, I do think you on Wisser is the better player. So that' that's, that's the one for me. You were saying the same. Would you have liked Kolo Mawani at Newcastle?
00:29:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know loads about him, but I know i mean i know he looked... i've seen them I've seen the reels on YouTube when he was touted as ah an alternative to Sesko and Eketike when we missed out on those two, and he looked he looked fine.
00:29:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
He looked good. But then instead of Vlavic, I really like the look of him.
00:29:45
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:29:47
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:29:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But I guess by that stage, ah you know, we talked already earlier in the window about Valtimada. And it just looked for so long as though Bayern Munich were going to have him when they finally agreed money.
00:30:00
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah.
00:30:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I'm delighted.
00:30:00
Michael Grahamslaw
felt like it was a done deal.
00:30:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I am absolutely delighted that we've gone in there and put the cash down and have got him. Because i think I think he might be the most exciting transfer of the transfer window. I could be biased.
00:30:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think Newcastle bringing him to the Premier League
00:30:14
Michael Grahamslaw
Mm-hmm.
00:30:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And seeing what what does sound what does Kev call him? Or Berber Crouch, he calls him, because he's got the toucher Berbertov and he's as tall as Peter Crouch.
00:30:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think that might be I think that might be one of the most exciting signings that but we've had in this whole transfer window.
00:30:38
Michael Grahamslaw
Yeah, he's a very unique player. like It's very rare you see players who are 6'4", 6'6", who have such a good touch and are good dribblers. Let's be honest, Peter Crouch, in regards to first touch, he was very good.
00:30:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:30:52
Michael Grahamslaw
But if you asked him, a run of the man... it was never happening, let's be honest. and Well, the what we see what you see from Wiltomar, it looks like he can beat three or four players and still progress with the ball. So it's I'm really excited by that, but I am so happy we got Johan Wisser in. And I'll be honest,
00:31:10
Michael Grahamslaw
when When the 55 million first came through, 50 plus five, I was a little concerned we'd overpaid. And then there's ah there's a wonderful compilation on YouTube, Welcome to Newcastle, Johan Wisser.
00:31:22
Michael Grahamslaw
I watched that and then I went, you know what? I'm happy with this. Somehow you've you've completely you've made me feel fine about it.
00:31:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:28
Michael Grahamslaw
um and I looked at last these goals last season. A lot of them are tap-ins. But what I will say about that is those tap-ins, Stryker's instinct, you can see it from a mile off.
00:31:40
Michael Grahamslaw
When the ball's in the air, he knows where the knock-on's going to be instead of a Sula, who I do like, but will just run towards the ball. um And that's what I think that's what we've been missing. And I think Johan Wisser is going to be one of the signings of the transfer window for me, 100%.
00:31:55
Michael Grahamslaw
No?
00:31:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, that's excellent, Michael. What a place to stop. Both

Conclusion and Upcoming Analysis

00:32:01
Michael Grahamslaw
no
00:32:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
you and I combined have got Visser and Volta Marder as the two most exciting transfers of this window.
00:32:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who... Can you remember that Swedish fella that used to play up front for us? I can't remember his name now.
00:32:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Let's get...
00:32:14
Michael Grahamslaw
No.
00:32:15
Michael Grahamslaw
No. Johnny, no, he was Danish.
00:32:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:17
Michael Grahamslaw
I was going say Johnny L. Thomason, but no.
00:32:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, no, I can't remember now.
00:32:20
Michael Grahamslaw
Oh.
00:32:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Can't remember.
00:32:22
Michael Grahamslaw
Shefke Koochee? No, he was Finnish.
00:32:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway...
00:32:25
Michael Grahamslaw
We'll think of him someday.
00:32:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. So that is the ah transfer deadline day, which isn't quite finished. ah It's 8.30 now, so there's still another half an hour for some some major surprise to go through on a deal sheet.
00:32:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But hopefully we've encapsulated what happened for Newcastle um and had a chance to have a little bit of a laugh at Liverpool as well. So that can't be too bad.
00:32:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much indeed for going through this with me, Michael.
00:32:52
Michael Grahamslaw
Of course.
00:32:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
and We will be back again tomorrow. with a more in-depth look at the transfer window from Newcastle's point of view. And we shall see you all then.
