Preview: Sounders vs Real Salt Lake

00:01:41
Speaker
Welcome back to another episode of Nos Adientes on the Sounder Heart Podcast Network. We are, the Sounders will be playing Real Salt Lake on Saturday. And to help me get a preview of RSL is friend of the show, friend of the the pod, friend of the website, Matt Montgomery of Wasatch Soccer Sentinel.
00:02:03
Speaker
How's it going, Matt? Good. I'm glad to be friend twice there. feel very privileged to be here. Three times. Podcast and website. i Show and podcast got same thing. Yeah, good point. fair us Synonymous.
00:02:18
Speaker
I did not sleep enough last night. Slept on a toddler's floor. not ideal. But you know you know how it goes. Oh, I know how it goes. I definitely know how it goes. I...
00:02:29
Speaker
i and and you're and you you know you don't you don't gotta... a Who knows when that'll end? Who knows when that'll end? Just so you know. i love it. I remember once, not to not to get too ah too far down this road, but I remember once when our daughter was probably five, her oldest daughter was five, her preschool teacher, and she was at the time, she was very much interested in sleeping on her bed.
00:02:56
Speaker
And her preschool teacher said, you know, someday they'll grow out of this and you'll miss it. And I looked her in the eye and I said, I really doubt that. And I have not missed it. I'll be honest with you. i have not missed my daughter's. i I guess it's nice every now and then, but I do not miss having to sleep in the same bed as my kids. Yeah.
00:03:16
Speaker
Yeah, I get him. So anyway, good talking to you, Matt. All right. So ah RSL, it's funny. This is, as you know, as you are very well aware, the Sounders have not won a regular season game at ah what we're now calling America First Field. Worst name in all of professional sport, by the way.
00:03:35
Speaker
I call it Real Salt Lake Stadium. Good. Thank you. Yeah. I i i don't think, well i don't even know why I said it out loud. It's the worst. It is an absolutely... Horrible name, by the way.
00:03:47
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, it's a credit named after the credit union. do you think the credit union got the name? I'm not going to speculate on air about that. all know.
00:03:57
Speaker
We all know. Anyway, Sounders have not won at this godforsaken stadium since to the in the regular season since 2011. It's like been 15 years, 14 years. Is that the last time?
00:04:11
Speaker
Cause i only, Yeah. yeah I wrote my match preview for Wasatch soccer today. and you thought that can't be right. No, I, instead of like actually looking anything up, I just talked about that match.
00:04:23
Speaker
And like the players I remember from both sides, like Freddie Montero and Lamar Nagel and Mario Gonzalez and yeah yas Alonso and Brad Evans and Casey Keller. oh yeah. And then of course, you know, 10 of RSL's 11 starters were, you know, club legends and Javier Morales was injured. and It was,
00:04:41
Speaker
It was a fun reflection because that was, I think, the first RSL home loss I wrote about when I started logging back into 2011. Yeah, because the hadn't lost in like three years. It was a long time, yeah.
00:04:54
Speaker
It was very depressing. It was like a 30-something game unbeaten streak at home, I believe. That game snapped. Yeah, i yeah. I don't know why for this match preview I spent like 800 words reflecting on that and 400 words talking about the game, but...
00:05:09
Speaker
you know, but mind of a blogger. Well, I'll tell you, this is the reason why I think you're thinking it is because deep down, you know that it has to end someday. And looking at the injury list, it would seem like maybe this is the, this is the week where that could end.
00:05:24
Speaker
The ah RSL injury list does not look so hot. Does it? um I mean, not for me, although I suspect you're salivating. I mean, i don't know if i ever salivated an ah RSL game on the road, but this does... It just feels like this is... This has to end. This madness has to end.
00:05:43
Speaker
Yeah, it's it's ah it's an interesting thing. ah Last game, there were like 10 injuries, 10 players out. ah This time, it's easing slightly.
00:05:55
Speaker
ah we may have a couple of returns. We may have a couple more absences. DeAndre Yedlin is out. ah So no... You know, former club meet up there, no reunion. And we might have Lucas Engel in the lineup for the first time since coming over from Cincinnati. But no Diego Luna, almost certainly no Victor Oletunji.
00:06:19
Speaker
And then our we've got three new guys who I'd love to see play a match. Yeah. But not likely to see them start here.

Real Salt Lake's Roster Challenges

00:06:29
Speaker
And so, okay, tell let's talk about these three new guys. j are They are, are they arriving late because of injury or because of paperwork or what's going on there?
00:06:39
Speaker
Yeah. So the the three in question are Morgan Gavogi, Wanma, Sanabria, and I think it's Stein or Steen. I'm going to say Stein, but I'm probably wrong. Spearings.
00:06:50
Speaker
And all three were delayed for visa reasons. now Juan Jose a Arias is also out. He also had visa problems, but it sounds like he may also just be injured and has been injured for some time.
00:07:06
Speaker
So that's... Not ideal. But certainly those those first three, out for visa reasons, haven't been involved in full training, variously involved in and preseason matches, although ah now not under their names, under like cry list number name.
00:07:27
Speaker
Although if if you see photos from the games, and their names out are on their know their their names are on the black or on the back of their I don't know. It's kind of weird. I'm glad I don't have to deal with that.
00:07:40
Speaker
A funny aside today, you know, the MLS roster profiles came out. Oh, yeah And there was not one, not two, but three Sounders extensions that had been previously unannounced on the on on this roster profile.
00:07:54
Speaker
I pointed it out and mysteriously all three got removed. ah So that was just kind of funny that it's like, why are you? What is the what is the cloak and dagger stuff here? Why are we like, come on?
00:08:06
Speaker
it's It's the MLS way now. And it's very strange to me because i think you build better fan experiences ah when information is available.
00:08:18
Speaker
I mean, it seems like the whole point of this, of releasing the roster profiles is to make this information available. And it then it feels very counterintuitive to then pull the information back when it is like, I have to assume that if it was in the MLS release, that this has already been approved by MLS and that this is not some rogue agent within the Sounders of publishing this information. that That may be too strong an assumption, though. You you never know with MLS. No, you're right. You're right.
00:08:44
Speaker
You're absolutely right. You're, you're absolutely right. It's probably is too strong of an assumption. So maybe it is, maybe that is why, but ah anyway, ah well, what what can you tell us about RSL? You know, like there has been at times at times last year, it looked like they had sort of started to like Pablo Mastrani had started to, to figure things out a little bit and then they ended up finishing ninth.
00:09:07
Speaker
Yeah. And, and then they kind of went through a rebuild this off season, right? Yeah. Kind of. um the the Yeah, the weird thing is, so number of players departed um and they they were all like I think RSL fans were roundly pleased to see these players depart. So when you see Diego Gonsalves leaving, who was a designated player, nobody's really sad about that. Sure.
00:09:34
Speaker
um Big underperformer. ah he He's the big one. I'm just looking at my list. ah Lachlan Brooke left. Didn't know. heard them Yeah. Rightly so. It came from the A-League and RSL thought he was going to be ready for MLS. And like, turns out maybe the A-League isn't.
00:09:58
Speaker
as good as MLS these days, which is great, right? That is great. It is. It's funny not to get too far down this, this path, but you know, I recently was talking to a Sounders personnel, uh, employee, someone who works in their front office. Yeah. And he was telling me he went and watched a Spanish Siri, uh, uh, like ah a third division game in Spain.
00:10:23
Speaker
And because he wanted to get a sense of, Yeah, exactly. i don't and he wants to get a sense of like, what level, what level is this? Because yeah, they had sort of been pitched some players from this league.
00:10:35
Speaker
And he came when he's like, it might be USL, maybe USL championship at best. Yeah. And I think one of the things that, has changed a lot over the years is MLS has probably steadily upgraded its, its, its, its reach into, you know, being close to a top 10 league in the world.
00:10:59
Speaker
But that also means, Yeah. And, but what it also means is that it's harder to scout from leagues that are below that. Right. Because it's like, are these players even like they may be dominating.
00:11:10
Speaker
mean, we see players doing well, even in, in the English championship who you they come to MLS and you're like, Oh, uh, maybe that wasn't as much of a trend that the game does not translate quite as well, but don't know. I've got a great example of that with real salt Lake. So we signed Morgan Giavogi from, uh, longs.
00:11:31
Speaker
I never know how how to pronounce the S in French, but if it's long or longs, like, yeah, or if it's like somewhere between those French is weird. He scored one goal and in the latest campaign for them.
00:11:48
Speaker
And then scored six goals in the campaign previously on loan or transferred to, ah and he's on loan to St. Paulie. um Scored six goals in 25 games.
00:12:00
Speaker
It's not a great outlay for for a striker, right? No. you You want to see these players scoring with more frequency. And the the golden rule is what? Like one every other game is a yeah a good mark. And we've seen over and over that It's extremely rare for a player to suddenly have ah you know and a breakout season 27 years in MLS even.
00:12:23
Speaker
in mlas even So, and and then before that, he had 15 goals in the twenty twenty two twenty three campaign, but he was playing for Paris FC in League Two.
00:12:37
Speaker
hu I don't think MLS is as good as League Two. or is so ah Sorry, I don't think League Two is as good as and MLS. Certainly not as competitive. The high end is probably higher, right? The yeah teams are looking toward promotion. The low end is certainly lower.
00:12:52
Speaker
And you probably get more exciting young talent getting scooped out of these teams than that last. But other than that, we've got this player who is like the bulk of his goals all came not at the top division in his nation. I'm like, does does that translate?
00:13:12
Speaker
i don't think so, but I'd love to be wrong. Yeah, ah you know, and again, I've kind of told the story a few times now, but I happen to go to a game in the English Championship.
00:13:22
Speaker
The Champo, yeah. The Champo, as as I call it, as I've heard it called. Although someone insisted to me no one calls it that, but I've never heard it. But I saw you post about it on Blue Sky. Oh, you got me. I thought that was great.
00:13:36
Speaker
Yeah, well, anyway. Yeah. So i was just, i was a little, i wouldn't say shocked, but I was, I was struck by you know, this, these were two sort of mid table-ish teams.
00:13:48
Speaker
yeah And there was maybe at most one player on the field who I thought, oh yeah, he could, he could be a, a player in MLS. And i thought honestly, like every sounder starter would be and like ah easy starter for either one of these teams.
00:14:02
Speaker
And I was not necessarily expecting that to be the case. ah And granted it was a small sample, but sure I'm just looking at the, the, the the skill on display. was not blowing me away.
00:14:13
Speaker
Yeah. I guess I just bring this up because I think it makes it harder. You don't think they could do it on a rainy night in Seattle then? I don't know. I don't. I don't. ah But anyway, ah what what is your vibe on on We also like has, you know, it's still this is still Kurt Schmid's team, right? Very much. He's been with the team, what, since 2020. Yeah.
00:14:38
Speaker
yeah Having come over from Miami. And I i know Siggy Schmid is a ah legend in Seattle. I i want to emphasize like none of this is about Siggy Schmid. Um, not taken that way. Don't worry. Good. Um, so there's there's the conspiracy minded part of me that sees him come, you know, leave into Miami and,
00:14:59
Speaker
Right before they're slapped with some big fines for cheating on the roster. Right. He comes over here and unscathed by that, I suppose.
00:15:11
Speaker
And I'm not supposing that he's cheating on the roster here, but like to be clear. But I think we've seen is that he's not great at roster building. ah that We got a ah big payout from Andres Gomez and a big payout from Fidel Barajas.
00:15:28
Speaker
And we immediately squandered all of that. I think we have one player left that we signed with the money that and that we got from those two deals.
00:15:40
Speaker
i think it totaled like somewhere between eight and 10 million. maybe it's a little more, but, uh, didn't you also sell Chicho Arango around the same time? Yeah. Although that is a whole nother story. Right. And I'm, I was, I, of course I've heard plenty of rumors and i don't know if you've heard rumors and I can tell you rumors later, but not, not on pod. Certainly.
00:16:03
Speaker
Um, that that made me pleased that he was, that he was sold. Yeah. Um, and that, that's a disappointing thing. And I certainly don't hold anyone at the club to account for his departure.
00:16:15
Speaker
Do I think he probably should have departed earlier? Definitely. Okay. and okay
00:16:22

Sounder at Heart has been around in one form or another since 2009. In 2026, though, we make a pretty significant evolution when we

A Q&A with Brian Schmetzer. A column by G. Willow Wilson. And photographs by Noah Reif, Max Aquino, Mike Russell, and Jane Gershowitz.

00:18:20
Speaker
Yeah, but point being that they have not really been able to replenish the roster. I know. yeah And they also, and the obviously the timing of a lot of those moves wasn't great either. Cause if I remember correctly,
00:18:32
Speaker
this was This all sort of happened when RSL was flying high in 2020, in the first half of 2024. Chicho Arango looked like he was you know on a on an MVP caliber season. I realized he wasn't he wasn't transferred, but he got hurt.
00:18:47
Speaker
I think he got hurt. I was not, he was suspended for unspended. Yes, that's right. Okay. And, but they, transfer they, they transferred out Andres Gomez and then they just, they kind of fell apart it in the second half of the season. And, and it seems like they haven't fully recovered from that.
00:19:03
Speaker
Yeah. I think what we saw was those two were carrying the team. And certainly like Chicho Arango didn't score a goal or he I think he scored one goal after that.
00:19:14
Speaker
He was on pace to beat ah RSL's you know all-time leading goal scorer in a single season, Alvaro Sabrillo, who you will remember from his beautiful heel flick goal in the 2011 playoffs.
00:19:28
Speaker
If you want me to send you a video of that, I will. No, you don't need to do that. You should really don't. All right. I'm good. You remember it then. Good. um I've struck it from my memory, but I appreciate you bringing it up anyway. You're welcome. I mean, I already talked about that Lamar Nagel goal. So yeah, fair enough. Fair. fairlan Fair place. So, you know, he did not perform after his suspension. Yeah.
00:19:52
Speaker
And we can speculate on the reasons. I don't think we need to, but ah it was clear there non-playing concerns and they impacted his performance.
00:20:04
Speaker
The departure of Andres Gomez, of course, also impacted everyone's performance. And now he's ah playing in, I believe, Brazil. So he, I don't know, was that a great move for him at the time?
00:20:19
Speaker
i hope he got paid. that's That's kind of what I hope he got out of it. Right. Because I don't think it has led to, it didn't lead to a a stellar career in Europe, right? No. And that's an interesting thing that we could talk hours about a different time, right?
00:20:35
Speaker
um The interesting thing about the way Schmidt has built this roster is that it's it's all... Well, I guess the other thing we should talk about is Pablo Master Randy now is on his third set of assistant coaches since joining the team.
00:20:50
Speaker
And that to me is surprising at worst, troubling at best. And we're now seeing that the team is going with a three-man back line with two wingbacks.
00:21:08
Speaker
Well, okay. let Actually, let me let me just stop you right there. When I was looking at this lineup, it struck me that there was one natural center back in that three man back line. Right. When you said when there were wingbacks, but Deandre Yedlin and, uh, Sam junk, what are playing as center backs who, and they have been wingbacks at points in their career.
00:21:32
Speaker
Like, so you're saying that they have four wingbacks really, right? well they're not playing as wingbacks. If you look at the positional chart in the opener, he was playing as a center back. Um,
00:21:45
Speaker
Right. Okay. Which I thought was ah an odd choice. um Now he's injured, so maybe that had some... um Maybe there's an injury incoming. You never know with those things, right? You often see players dip in performance before an injury. Because the universe has a way of doing that, which is...
00:22:03
Speaker
I don't know. I kind of wish i knew more about those things. I'm kind of glad I don't. um But then, you know, the the weird thing is our wing, so one wing back on the left kind of just played as a slightly attacking left back. And that's Alex Katranas, who last year played as a very, very attacking fullback.
00:22:21
Speaker
I'm like, it was bombing up the wing. We didn't see that at all. And then the one that that kills me was Xavier Gozo ah was put at right wing back. And he, so I've never seen this before, but his positional chart, the average position, completely overlapped with DeAndre Yedlund's.
00:22:43
Speaker
At like this weird right center back, wide center back role. And obviously like that's an average of position and I get that, but he played a very defensive game. And he was a breakout attacking player last year.
00:22:54
Speaker
Right. ah Ah, you got me complaining about RSL. This is... this is not great so what you're saying is that so even as someone who really consumed the game yeah and me looking at this as on a spread on on a static right on a chart you're saying it's as weird as it looked yeah it was um and it was very defensive uh you had five like permanent defenders and i just like i don't I don't get putting one of your best attackers at wingback when he's 18, 19 and likely going to Europe in the summer.
00:23:36
Speaker
i don't know. So all that to say, like, is this a great roster? I don't think so. Maybe these additions help push it over the edge, but like there's not a natural right wing back among them.
00:23:48
Speaker
We have a natural left wing back now, and maybe we'll play our left wing back on the right and do something inverted. or over complicated. I love inverted wing backs to be clear. Like I love it when your fullback steps inside in the attack. I think that's just fun. Yeah.
00:24:05
Speaker
I also love a player bombing up the wing. So I'm, I don't know. yeah It's always fun when you see a player someplace where you're not quite expecting to see them. Right. Yeah. Yeah. um But when that's Deandre, yeah, then at right center back, it is not fun.
00:24:19
Speaker
It's just kind of depressing. You know, okay. Well, since and I realized DeAndre is not going to play in this game and yeah we're, we're big fans of DeAndre here, but yeah I'm just, I am watching him from afar.
00:24:32
Speaker
I have been struck by a player who has clearly clearly an amazing athlete, a pretty skilled player. He has close to 100 national team caps, a ton of Premier League experience. He's played in a bunch of big... He played in Champions League.
00:24:48
Speaker
This a guy who's been there and done that. He's played the World Cup. Yeah, he's the guy's done everything. And yet, there's something... odd about his actual stats in that this is a player who seemingly and made a career out of being like a wingback, yeah but yet has really no has has never really put up any sort of attacking numbers. Yeah.
00:25:11
Speaker
What is DeAndre Yedlin's? where where do He's 32 now. Yeah. where Where do, like, what how does he, what what kind of, what do you see in him right now? ah Right now? I have no idea. Honestly, he played seven matches last year. Excuse me. um I forgot he had a goal, which I'm gonna have to go look that up.
00:25:36
Speaker
And then played one match at right center back. And I wonder, like, what's the what's the intention behind having him on the roster if you're going to take a player with that attacking quality and put him central?
00:25:54
Speaker
Right. Put him defensive. And I also, like, I want to give him room to transition in his career, right? Maybe his his pace is probably going a little bit. um oh my god i'm putting up i'm just looking at his assist canada their mls assists but four assists for miami 22 three for cincinnati in 24 like those aren't ter over and five are yeah for another four for cincinnati in 25 those are those are good numbers right not great know hes he's put up some decent ah assist numbers you're right
00:26:27
Speaker
But and I don't know. i'm I'm hopeful that we can ask, you know, answer that question later in the year, because right now it's just kind of a mystery.
00:26:38
Speaker
Yeah, it is. it's it's isn't yeah And I have to, I guess I should correct myself. He actually did. He never played in Champions League. He did play in Europa League. He has a of Premier League. They're basically the same thing,
00:26:49
Speaker
They're basically the same thing, exactly. Yeah, you know, that's making me think that maybe that good old Obed Vargas may have been the first sounder to play in Champions League.
00:27:04
Speaker
All right. I should have made more note of that. But ah you can go. You can go back now and just write. I can go back and say, hey, I just discovered this. Put it in the magazine. Magazines don't have to be timely.
00:27:16
Speaker
They do not. They do not. Well, Matt, I got to say, i i don't know if people realize this or not, but you have been instrumental in helping get Sounder at Heart off the ground as an independent operation.
