Labor Day and End of Summer Chat

00:01:26
Speaker
Hey, what's going on? What's going on? Not much, man, not much. How's week? Doing good. Labor Day week, end of summer, you slowing down at work yet? or Probably not. no Probably not. A couple weeks after Labor Day, usually.
00:01:40
Speaker
yeah the yeah tour season starts to slow down a little bit. Yeah, yeah.

Unusual Products: KFC-flavored Jelly Beans

00:01:45
Speaker
We're going to start off the week this week with a quick fat fuck.
00:02:03
Speaker
Just one thing i want to talk about. I saw this and I have to talk about it. Okay. Jelly beans coming out, KFC flavored. Fried chicken, sweet corn, and gravy.
00:02:18
Speaker
Reminds me a lot of those Jelly Bellies that used to come out with the Harry Potter ones. going to say the Harry Potter ones, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Did want to mention that. Fucking weird. But, yeah, that's all I had for for that this week. um Okay. Okay.

Highlighting Marvel's Greatest Comics

00:02:33
Speaker
But it is beginning of the month and we do have a show and tell.
00:02:40
Speaker
So many geeky things that we could pull off from the shell. We've been collecting shit for years now we're ripping it out.
00:02:52
Speaker
So it's time to showcase all the money that we wasted well.
00:03:05
Speaker
go first I bought this book last month. i haven't read it yet, but each page is the Marvel Comics greatest comics 100 100 comics essential 100 essential comics nice um and each page I think believe it starts in the 1930s the first human torch comic book and it goes all the way up to modern day And each page, I'll try to find one real quick here.
00:03:30
Speaker
like This is the Human Tours from 1939. It'll break down the whole entire origin of the comic and what it meant the but it meant to the comic world and everything. It's really cool.
00:03:41
Speaker
And of course, 100 comics. There's quite a few in there. Quite a few like iconic ones going all the way back to the debut of Iron Man and all that.

The Question Character in Watchmen

00:03:50
Speaker
Nice. Well, mine's kind of a sign to the movie you we're going to talk about.
00:03:55
Speaker
I actually have two. Ooh, yeah. I saw you got those. I got the question omnibus, which, of course, is what we're going to be talking Watchmen, which is who Rorschach is based off of.
00:04:09
Speaker
Yep. And I fucking love this character. He's probably... i say if I were to make a Mount Rushmore of comic characters to read, it would be Batman, Superman, Green Arrow, and The Question.
00:04:23
Speaker
um It's like it's ripped straight out of a... ah a detective movie. It's, it's great. It feels like a Fincher movie every time you read it. Um, really enjoyed this comics. Um, if you've never read a Question, I highly recommend it It's, he's fucking awesome.
00:04:37
Speaker
Love it. Nice. Nice. Um, I have not read it. But we are going to talking about The Watchmen in a little bit, and I know there's deep lore in DC Comics for that.

Dexter Resurrection Finale Review

00:04:48
Speaker
But until then, let's talk about what we watched this week.
00:04:51
Speaker
ah There was a finale today. There was. watched the finale of the first season of Dexter Resurrection. Uh, first of all, last episode, I think it's a week later, we can talk about it. Batista died.
00:05:07
Speaker
and this is kind of him trying to cover up the body and cover up the crime scene. Also going after Prater, who is, uh, Peter Dinklage. um And that's exactly what happens. And he ends getting him on his table. Actually, it ends up being in Prater's trophy room.
00:05:24
Speaker
And stabs him right in the heart. Kills him. um Him and Harrison, in one of the first finales where they don't have a fight and he ends up dying.
00:05:35
Speaker
Dexter actually survives. Escapes on Prater's yacht, reminiscent of when Dexter used to have his boat and go out in the to a Miami Harbor. He goes out into New York Harbor dispose of the body parts right in front of the Statue of Liberty. i thought that was a great touch.
00:05:49
Speaker
um and they find And then he gets the cops on the trail to find Prater's big, huge trophy room of all the serial killers, and they realize... There's some crazy shit going on here.
00:06:01
Speaker
Yep. But before he leaves, Prater has file cabinets filled with a bunch of different serial killers, including ones that he brings to his parties, including ah Eric Stonestreet's character, who He takes the file folder for him as well because we speculated that he's goingnna have to go after him eventually he can finish and finish the job.
00:06:25
Speaker
He has, i believe, five or six in ah in a duffel bag on this yacht setting up what is probably going to be season two of this show of him going across America killing serial killers that are left over in this file cabinet that he took with him. Yeah.
00:06:44
Speaker
Yeah, it was a great finale. Very good, yes. Yeah, very, very good show altogether. And, yeah, good to see this. it It kind of sucks. We talked about it last week, but Origins was canceled. So this is the one and only Dexter on Paramount now, on Showtime.
00:07:00
Speaker
Dexter Original Sin has been canceled. There's a petition going online with, like, 80,000 signatures, I believe, at them at the moment. Because a lot of people think it was done prematurely after the merger with Skydance and all that shit.
00:07:16
Speaker
But we do have Dexter Resurrection. No word on the season two yet. But when they did talk about canning origin, original sin, um they did set that say that they were very proud of what what Resurrection was doing.
00:07:30
Speaker
And to the point where it sounded like they had more faith in the Michael C. Hall series. Yeah, it seemed like it was like a one or the other type situation. Yep, yep.
00:07:41
Speaker
So. Yeah, so we will begin hopefully be getting another season. We'll we'll but talk about it. we'll We'll talk about it on this show when we find out for sure. But, um yeah, another episode.

Alien Earth Episode Review

00:07:52
Speaker
This episode of Alien Earth this week was great.
00:07:55
Speaker
no It was a flashback episode 17 days before the ship crashed on the Earth in first episode. um And it's it's basically a shot-for-shot remake of the first Alien, but the Ripley character being this black guy that's been kind of like the bad guy throughout the first few episodes.
00:08:14
Speaker
um He has become, you kind of get his idea of why he was stealing all the specimens, why he was stealing the alien, and how he knew all about the xenomorphs and all that. Got an idea of what was going on, and why he was doing all that.
00:08:30
Speaker
um And I wrote in the notes it's probably better than half of the other alien content that has been on screen. And that includes all these shitty movies, too.
00:08:40
Speaker
But just it was just a great, like, paying homage. Of course, there's a lot of... They took, from what I read, um they took the blueprints of the first alien movie of the ship. What was it called? The Nostromo? Rostroano? Whatever the hell it's called. Yeah, something like that.
00:08:55
Speaker
They took the blueprints of that ship, did a a ah remake of the whole entire ship from from hull to hull, and did the hallways, did the the rooms, everything the same as the first movie.
00:09:08
Speaker
And they just told them to run amok in there with the Xenomorph chasing them around, um and all the other aliens, Vespans, that they captured as well. But yeah, it was a great, probably the best episode of the series so far. This was episode 5, so I believe...
00:09:21
Speaker
i think there's eight episodes, maybe ten. I can't remember how many episodes. I think it's eight. Is there eight? So, yeah, we're a little bit more than halfway now. So, yeah, it was it was really good. I can't wait for to see the next episode on Tuesday.

Peacemaker Episode Analysis

00:09:33
Speaker
um And episode three of Peacemaker. This is the one that everybody who's seen the... the The previews before the show came out saw the first five episodes said, yeah, this is a good one. This is a good action, and it was.
00:09:47
Speaker
Within the first one minute of the show, yeah you get the biggest spoiler of the series so far, which we speculated last week that the episode was, i can't remember what was called, something, two Ricks or something, I can't remember.
00:10:00
Speaker
Thinking, well, there's already Rick Sr. Is there talking about another Rick Sr.? No. They were talking, spoiler, about Rick Flagg Jr., Joel Kinnaman coming back to reprise his role from the Suicide Squad.
00:10:16
Speaker
um And he was fucking around with Harcourt before the suicide before James Gunn's Suicide Squad. That was a flashback the beginning of the episode started with.
00:10:27
Speaker
um He was in bed with Harcourt. um Cheating on his girlfriend at the time. Hardcore actually mentions to him, you should be really be with June.
00:10:38
Speaker
June is June Moon, who plays, who is the Enchantress, and the DCEU's Suicide Squad from 2016. So, I wanted to, I know you've probably been on the internet today.
00:10:52
Speaker
How is the internet taking that David Ayer's Suicide Squad is actually part of canon of this show? It's kind of a mess. It's kind of a mess. With even in the podcast yeah Even in the podcast that James Gunn was like, yeah, I kind of created a mess tonight. Because, yeah, David Ayer's Suicide Squad potentially is canon.
00:11:16
Speaker
Is it possible that we'll see enchantment in this episode? This brought up um a lot of stuff. um One of which being... um So obviously everyone knows the release the air cut, which is direct lead-in to Zack Snyder's Justice League.
00:11:32
Speaker
Right. So how is that going to play out if they ever release it? Um... Yeah, it's kind of a mess. um A lot of people think they'll just recast um June um for the series and for the DCU.
00:11:45
Speaker
um But i wonder if, because Rick Flag has that line about um if he has interdimensional whatever in his house, then he has to be arrested. What if he finds out that he can technically bring his son back through a different dimension?
00:11:59
Speaker
um Will he sweep everything under the rug? um I don't know, but this episode was fantastic. Probably the best of the season so far. Yeah, so far. um Peacemaker goes into this new universe it finds out that he's famous, that he's in love with hardcore. Hardcore's in love with him over there.
00:12:19
Speaker
Going around, solving all these bomb bombers coming in. and and pretty much Pretty much everything he doesn't have in his own universe. Yes, cleaning up shop. quote-unquote best dimension ever.
00:12:34
Speaker
um And at the end of the episode, um sets up what's going happen next episode, Argus in the current, in the real universe, DCU, um know that that Chris has gone into this pocket dimension.
00:12:49
Speaker
And they can't find him and they are going to Chris's house with an army of people, agents, to try to stop not only Chris but Eagly And you see the Eagle Hunter, played by Michael Rooker, as part of this party.
00:13:06
Speaker
And you also see a returning judo master from the first season, a little short green guy, who when Economos opens up the van and sees him sitting in the van, he's like, what the fuck?
00:13:18
Speaker
So that's going to be hilarious between that and Titties. You find out that she survived. I fucking love Titties. Tim Meadows, by the way. Yeah. Not in this episode a lot, but the very end of this episode showed up and it was just great.
00:13:32
Speaker
um Yeah. Great show. Great episode. Two more episodes of what's been previewed to the press. And then we're we're in... a new territory where there's no spoilers, nobody knows anything, and it'll be great.

The Paper Discussion

00:13:48
Speaker
um And surprisingly, nothing about this leaked. I mean, we talked about it just because we knew that in this universe, it's possible. that anything Anything, anybody could have survived this, this died in the Suicide Squad.
00:13:59
Speaker
Now, all the way back to David Ayer's Suicide Squad, there's so much that could be opened up, because really the only scene in that movie that that wouldn't be canon is the bat Ben Affleck scene, yep and the Flash scene, and those are the two that were in that movie. Everything else could be possibly canon, and those characters could come back.
00:14:18
Speaker
um yeah And we also, the other the other hanging chat here is we haven't seen any creature commandos, we haven't seen anything so far, and we haven't seen too many Superman characters yet either, besides who's been on screen so far, but um yeah we There's a lot of possibilities in the last three episodes of who could show up, what could what could debut.
00:14:38
Speaker
We've already speculated could be Blue Beetle. We speculated probably Superman. It could be Wild Shot in the Dark. It could be a debut of a Batman character of some sort. But we'll have to wait and see. So, yeah, great show.
00:14:52
Speaker
I watched the whole entire series of of Wednesday, Season 2, Part 2. It came out on the 3rd on Netflix. um It's really good. I love this show.
00:15:03
Speaker
ah Not a real spoiler, but I will say um what they did with Thing in the last episode was fantastic. kind of a little Kind of a little glimpse of how Thing was created.
00:15:15
Speaker
um Yeah, i don't want to get too much. If anybody wants to watch this show, it's great. It's on Netflix. First two parts. First part came out like a month ago. ah and the four episodes The final four episodes came out this week. was really good. and So, yeah, the other show that I watched this week, um I was kind of hesitant on it because, I mean, I love The Office so much. And I did finish all ten episodes. The the Paper.
00:15:40
Speaker
A sort of semi-follow-up to The Office. um The first episode tackles what happened to Dunder Mifflin. um they go to They go to the building where Dunder Mifflin was. It has since been shut down since 2019, right before the pandemic.
00:15:55
Speaker
And Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration, is still in the building. The documentary crew goes in, talks to him. And talks about well who bought out the who bought out the Dunder Mifflin. um Is it still, is it they still have a parent company? And they do.
00:16:09
Speaker
And their parent company is a toilet toilet paper company who actually owns a newspaper company as well. And that's where the documentary crew end up going in Toledo, Ohio um and following this whole entire cast of characters.
00:16:23
Speaker
um and Oscar and a few other people were offered roles from Dunder Mifflin. If you come to this place in Toledo, um you'll have a job available and Oscar is the only one that took it. so Oscar from the original series of The Office is in this show because of that.
00:16:37
Speaker
so I liked how they explained that. um Ned, who is a main character played by Donald Gleeson. He's been in a lot of stuff. He started off, I remember him in Harry Potter. was in that time machine, About Time I think it's called. It's really, really good.
00:16:51
Speaker
Where he goes into a closet and he can kind of like rewind time in little increments. i thought that was a really good show. Or a little movie. ah The rest of the cast is growing on me. There's only one there's one foreign lady that's kind of out of it. The girl in the red in the poster there, but um Overall, it's a decent show, and it was picked up for a second season this week before the show even aired on Peacock.
00:17:16
Speaker
um This is on Peacock if you want to watch it all 10 episodes. um Good follow-up to The Office. The last episode leads off with a kind of a cliffhanger or something that should have happened in The Office where Jim and Pam got together. Something happened in this episode kind of reminiscent of that in the first season, so Didn't have to wait three seasons for that. um But yeah, pretty good show on Peacock you want to watch that.
00:17:38
Speaker
um I know you watched a movie before we get into the big review, the big revisit this week. I know you watched the brand new I Know What You Did last summer. Boy, boy.
00:17:50
Speaker
I've heard mixed to bad things about it, and I'm pretty sure you have some thoughts as well.
00:17:57
Speaker
This movie was awful. Yeah, um that's what I heard. It was fucking terrible. um Just nonsensical shit. like um The first one kind of has like a ah place in its history. is like That's when a lot of teen stuff was coming out. and um The revival of like the teen horror stuff.
00:18:15
Speaker
um The first two kind of work. I mean, they don't age very well, but they worked back in 97 and 98 or whenever they came out. But yeah, this movie was just fucking terrible.
00:18:26
Speaker
Yeah. um yeah I gave it a half star on Letterboxd. Wow. The half stars on Letterboxd for me are grimaces, so that's pretty close to a grimace for me. Yeah.
00:18:37
Speaker
Yeah, I was going to watch it, but and when you when I saw your review online, i was like, yeah, I'm not even picking that up. but That's a waste of my time this week. I'd rather watch all of Wednesday. um Yeah. So, yeah. ah Well, you came up with this idea.

Watchmen Movie Development

00:18:50
Speaker
We'll it a synopsis of now. we're goingnna talk about the comic book later on but we are going to talk about the movie the zachander movie came out two thousand and nine um we're going to talk about the origin of the a little bit when the col book but we'll talk we'll give it a little brief synopsis of the comic book origin now um In the 80s, Alan Moore um was given the task to write this com this comic series um on characters that DC had just won, or just owned just got the ownership of.
00:19:26
Speaker
oh Like you mentioned, The Question was one of them. There's a few other ones. ah um Instead of taking those characters and... making comics of them, he actually took those characters and rewrote them.
00:19:39
Speaker
um And that's what ended up becoming the Watchmen and the story of the Watchmen becoming like an alternate history of the world. Kind of like what happens if the Cold War had superheroes. What would happen?
00:19:51
Speaker
um It's been in development, Hal, since the 80s. Since 1987 to 2005. Moving around from Century Fox, Universal Pictures... Revolution Studios, Paramount Pictures, all were hired at one point to produce this film.
00:20:07
Speaker
um Director terran karenta Terry Gillian from Monty Python um deemed the film unfilmable. um David Hayter, Darren Aronofsky, Paul Greengrass were all attached at some point. Michael Bay considered it.
00:20:22
Speaker
ah Tim bur Burton even showed interest, but ultimately he turned it down. um After all of that, in 2005, DC Comics just decided to do it under their parent company, Warner Bros., and i hired on Zack Snyder to do the directing duties.
00:20:40
Speaker
um Because of this, ah Fox had all the rights up to them. Fox sued Warner Bros. for this, um for not buying them out in the 90s for the rights they initially had.
00:20:51
Speaker
um And they settled it before this film got released, so the edge actually Fox has a portion of the growth for this movie as well. um Creator Dave Gibbons became an advisor on on this on Snyder's film, but Alan Moore refused to have any anything attached to his name about this film, or any pretty much anything that he's done.
00:21:10
Speaker
um well I saw this quote, i think it was on Wikipedia, I saw it, of Alan Moore talking about his work being turned into a comic book movie, saying, there are things that we did with Watchmen that could only work in a comic, and we're and we're indeed designed to show off things that other media can't. So in other words, ah we wrote for a comic book, that's what we wanted our story to be.
00:21:31
Speaker
um We didn't think it could be a movie because that's what we specifically wrote it for in the comic book style. um And he's had that stance ever since then, still to this day, for all of his work. um And the watchman The Watchman is the biggest part of that.
00:21:46
Speaker
kind of he's He's talked shit about The Watchman and other stuff that's been adapted of his work since then. um Directed by Zack Snyder. um Music by Tyler Bates, who's worked with Zack in everything.
00:21:58
Speaker
um Written by David Ayer, X-Men, X-Men 2, and Alexei Tese, I don't know how to say his name, um who did the Wu-Tang in American Saga, which I know you loved that show when it came out. He was a co-writer of this as well.
00:22:12
Speaker
um The cast of this movie. Zack Snyder originally wanted Thomas Jane. ah He declined to be... Early on, he declined... um Due to having a busy set schedule. This is the time when he was doing all the HBO shows and everything he was doing.
00:22:26
Speaker
um But the show is, the movie is basically um superheroes, like I said, in the Cold War era. um And way, way back. And the first group of so superheroes you meet are the Minutemen.
00:22:42
Speaker
Set way, way back in the 50s and 60s. And that's them right there. um Right front and center, leaning down, is The Comedian, which we'll talk about more in a minute. ah Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
00:22:54
Speaker
um Carlo Gagino as Sally Jupiter, Silk Spectre, the first one. um Originally, i mean we're talking all the way back in the 80s, we were talking about um who was considered for all of these roles we're going talk about here. But considered for the role for the first Silk Spectre, Liv Tyler.
00:23:11
Speaker
Jimmy Lee Curtis, Ann Margaret, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Moinota Ryder, and Sigourney Weaver. they We're going to talk all the way back to the 80s. I could see some of these in their prime in the 80s, early 90s, coming in and and being considered for for this role.
00:23:27
Speaker
um There is a documentary, I forgot to watch it, i was going to watch it for today. There's documentary a documentary, a mockumentary, that came out right around the time Zack's movie came out, um to Under the Hood, which is the book that the character, the owl, the first owl wrote.
00:23:43
Speaker
um And it's a mockumentary about the book and the history of this Minutemen group. um And I meant to watch it. I forgot to. I think I sent the link to you. but Maybe we'll talk about it before the end of the month. But there is a mockumentary and a whole 40-minute mockumentary about this whole history of this group in the picture here.
00:24:01
Speaker
um This group gets dis sp is disbanded by different means of death and and retirement and everything else, which is basically what the movie is about. Jackie Earl Harrelly's character of Rorschach.
00:24:15
Speaker
You meet him in the first scene of this movie after the after the comedian dies. um He's on the hunt to find out why all of these superheroes are have kind of vanished from the world.
00:24:28
Speaker
um talking about some of them being killed, some of them being murdered, some of them just retiring, some of them going into a mental hospital. um There's a whole bunch of stuff he talks about. um Unlike other principal actors, Haley had read the comics as a kid, as a young adult, and was keen to pursue the role of Rorschach when he heard that he had become kind of a fan favorite among fans.
00:24:48
Speaker
um eli s like ah eli yeah Eli Snyder, Zack Snyder's son, played a younger Walter Kovacs who was Rorschach when he was younger. um Joining the cast, Patrick Wilson as Daniel, Night Owl 2.
00:25:03
Speaker
um Originally, we're talking all the way back to the 80s, Kevin Costner, Christopher Walken, and Richard Gere were all considered for this part. John Cusack was a huge fan of this comic book.
00:25:14
Speaker
um Also pitched his name in the hat, but ultimately when the when the movie went into production, Patrick Wilson was hired. Love Patrick Wilson. We talk about him all the time. um Of course, recently he's been in The Conjuring. Yep.
00:25:27
Speaker
yeah Aquaman, yeah. Matthew Good as Adrian. Ozymandias, spoiler, kind of the villain of this this piece. um Snyder literally wanted Jude Law, um who was a fan of the character but felt good when he met him, when he saw his audition, felt he was more sleek, more of a German Superman look that fit more of the Ozymandias character, who is kind of a German Superman.
00:25:56
Speaker
um Tom Cruise also interested in the part. Zack Snyder revealed that recently. um Actually met with him, but Snyder felt he was more interested in playing the role role of Rorschach, um who had already been cast as Jackie jackie Earl Haley.
00:26:10
Speaker
um Malin Ackerman, who's been in a bunch of stuff. She was in that movie with um but ah Ben Stiller. I can't remember what it's called. It was it was a funny comedy movie. um But she played Silk Spectre 2, the daughter of the first Silk Spectre.
00:26:23
Speaker
um And she's her role originally could have been Hilary Swank, Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz, Jennifer Conley, Mila Djokovic, Jessica Alba. All were considered at one point.
00:26:37
Speaker
um And the main character of this movie that everybody remembers is a big blue superhero-powered, over-superpowered character of Doctor Manhattan, played by Billy Crudup.
00:26:49
Speaker
At this point, Billy Crudup's biggest role was probably almost famous. um Yeah, probably. He was the lead he was a lead of that of the band. um Only member of this movie that really has genuine superpowers.
00:27:04
Speaker
Making him a god among men. um And they definitely proved that in this movie. Role was offered to Keanu Reeves. Keanu Reeves turned it down. Would have been a weird, different movie for sure. um Scenes of note.
00:27:18
Speaker
um First of all, the opening of this movie with the comedian...

Watchmen Opening Scene Analysis

00:27:23
Speaker
It's a great visual. You already get what this movie is going to be. This is Zack Snyder before everybody knew what Zack Snyder really was all about.
00:27:30
Speaker
The slow-mo, the fighting style, the just the way just the way he shoots and the way, the way you know, Zack Snyder style now. And this is kind the first glimpse a lot fans. think this was the the first movie that was marketed with him as a visual mastermind, I believe, because this was coming off of 300.
00:27:50
Speaker
So I think that was the movie where they started doing all the slow-mo and then they started saying he was a visual mastermind during the promotion of this movie. And casting Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the comedian.
00:28:04
Speaker
Yep. Every scene that he's in in this movie, he steals. And he turned it down at first. Yeah, he did. Because you not fact he died in the opening scene. Yes, he read the script, found out within the first few pages, like, why did you give me this? why He's telling alllan telling his agents, why did you give me this script?
00:28:20
Speaker
um and Just keep reading, just keep reading. You're throughout. You're in you're in flashbacks throughout. and Sure enough, he wrote he read it and he loved it and became part of it. um My favorite part of this movie, my one of my favorite scenes in a lot of movies um is the whole opening credits during where they're playing it with Times They Are Changing, the Bob Dylan song.
00:28:45
Speaker
At the time... I don't think I'd ever heard that song before. I think it may have been the first time I ever heard it. It wasn't really popular for us. um And that's the first time I'd ever heard it really in mainstream.
00:28:57
Speaker
I've heard it ever ever ever since then. but um But yeah, it's just telling the history of the Minutemen and what happened to them. Um, by the way, there's a minute man and here's the watchman. Now, um, the, the, the team kind of evolved and Mr. Manhattan, right there, Dr. Manhattan, right there, all blue and bright. And of course, the God among men, but yeah, the times they are changing. One of my favorite pieces of music ever put into a movie, just the way that you utilize that to show that how the times were changing from one superhero group, the minute men turning into the watchman.
00:29:30
Speaker
Um, Every scene with Rorschach in this, Rorschach is on the far right there. Rorschach has this mask reminiscent of inkblots for the inkblot test that changes. Yeah, the Rorschach test. and The Rorschach test.
00:29:43
Speaker
um Rorschach, every scene with Rorschach in this movie is great. Jackie Earl Haley, perfect casting for this. When he goes into the prison and he and he's there and all of these villains are there and know that he know his secret identity now.
00:29:58
Speaker
And he tells them, you think that I was put in here for you, or they were I was put in here protect, I can't remember the line, i wish I put it in there.
00:30:09
Speaker
But, I can't remember the line, i wish I put it in here. but um And then he goes after all the inmates in the in the cafeteria, was great. with the They think I'm locked in here with me, but they're locked, no, they think I'm locked in here with them, but they're really locked in here with me, is that the one you're talking about? That's what I'm thinking of, I couldn't remember off the top of my head.
00:30:27
Speaker
um And every scene with Dr. Manhattan in this movie, every scene, even with his gigantic dong, is perfect. um Dr. Manhattan has every single superpower rolled into one.
00:30:40
Speaker
He is definitely like the super god, super level human, superhuman superhero of all superheroes. Um, and him and the comedian flashback in Vietnam when he's taking, taking over all the Viet Cong, um, annihilating the whole entire war.
00:31:01
Speaker
Um. His origin story, when you see Dr. Manhattan's origin story, was great. Pretty much every scene with Dr. Manhattan was great in this movie.

Ozymandias as Watchmen’s Antagonist

00:31:10
Speaker
um And the very, very final fight, and when you find out Ozymandias is a bad guy, that whole entire thing, and the nuclear war that happened 30 minutes before, where the nuclear bombs that had gone already gone off and they realized they were it was too late.
00:31:24
Speaker
um I know that was all changed. I know in the comic book it's a giant squid. We'll get into that at the end of the month. yeah um But... Yeah. Overall, i thought I think this movie's great. I've loved it since it came There is kind of a mixed audience for it just because of the how they changed the comic book a lot.
00:31:44
Speaker
um and how the like for For example, Osmantius looks like something out of a 1990s Joel Schumacher Batman movie. Zack Snyder did that purposely.
00:31:57
Speaker
He wanted him to look like Batman and Robin. He wanted him to be the the kind of what the character would look like to the world after he revealed himself. As a superhero.
00:32:08
Speaker
And he's also a billionaire, kind of like Batman. He's got millions millions and billions of dollars. And what would happen if that character became kind of a bad guy? He's super smart, too.
00:32:21
Speaker
Budget for this movie, $150 $180 made million worldwide. hundred and seven of that in north america so kind of considered a failure however This became a cult movie.
00:32:36
Speaker
And all when it came out on DVD, it made some of the most money a DVD had ever made. I believe the total in 2022, up to 2022, was like $125 million in just DVD sales and digital sales alone.
00:32:50
Speaker
And, yeah, it's a great visually stunning movie. I'm not 100% sure if this movie's in 4K yet. Do you know if it is? Yeah, I got the 4K, and I was going

Ultimate Cut of Watchmen Review

00:32:59
Speaker
talk about that. um So I got the And the only the only version of this that's actually on a 4K disc, because you get the Blu-ray, which has the normal TG-actical, and it has the director's cut.
00:33:13
Speaker
The Ultimate Cut is the only version you can watch on the 4K disc. Yes. So I watched The Ultimate Cut. Have you seen the Ultimate Cut? or you've just direct watch The whole reason this came up is six months ago. I watched the Ultimate Cut for the first time.
00:33:27
Speaker
Okay. You told me to wait until we'll talk about it long term now because of the anniversary. That's why it came up. Jesus Christ. Yeah. um It's long. And it's got these like weird cartoons. Yeah. They put the animation of the ship stuff in there that was part of the comic book.
00:33:42
Speaker
Yes. um It was just weird. It was too drawn out. But I'm glad I finally watched that. um Actually, I think I bought the 4K after we were talking about the Ultimate Cut um briefly.
00:33:53
Speaker
But yeah um yeah, the Ultimate Cut's very long. um But I do love this movie a lot. Me too. It was the first Blu-ray ever watched, which you let me borrow, um when I got a Blu-ray player back in whatever that was, 2010, 2009, 2010 probably. like yeah um So yeah, I really enjoyed this movie. Love it.
00:34:11
Speaker
Yeah, me too. And we have three more weeks. very different. It's very different. It's very different of other comic book movies at the time. mean, at this point, and we hadn't had an Avengers movie at this point.
00:34:23
Speaker
yeah The DC Universe really only had the Dark Knight. Superman was missing. there was Smallville was still on television. So there there it was kind of like a pivot point for Marvel and everybody else at the time.
00:34:36
Speaker
um This is definitely one of those movies. We talk about the influence of what movies do for her for movies later on, and this is definitely an influence for what you would see later on in comic book movies. um And we have three more things we're goingnna talk about.
00:34:48
Speaker
I don't remember the timeline, but we are going to talk about the series in a couple weeks. um We're going to talk about the comic book, The Watchmen, probably the last week. Give me time to read it.
00:35:00
Speaker
And Doomsday Clock, which is a s sequel that came out, I believe, four years ago, five years ago. um It's basically where Dr. Manhattan goes into the DC Universe and he has a big huge knockdown drag fight with Superman.
00:35:14
Speaker
um And what's the other thing? Oh, we're gonna also, I think, believe next week. ah We're going to talk about DC Animated came out with a two-part watch movie that that came out a couple years ago.
00:35:26
Speaker
And we are going to talk about that. We're going watch that this weekend this week. And we'll talk about that next week. That's what it was. I can't remember what we're talking about next week. But, yep. um Well, until then, let's get into some news.

Marvel Zombies Animated Series Preview

00:35:44
Speaker
And it's not a news time. Let's try it around i Got some good trailers this week. First trailer was the trailer for Marvel Zombies, the animated show, um coming out on Disney Plus on September 24th. R-rated, rated MA, swearing, blood.
00:36:03
Speaker
um spider-man chopping off heads of zombies um the reason why this show was made is because all of the legacy characters would have had to be paid millions and millions of dollars but when they're zombies they don't talk so uh they brought in all of the newer marvel marvel characters from like thunderbolts and shang chi and brought them in to be the ones to fight all of the Marvel zombies to save on the budget.
00:36:30
Speaker
Four episodes all come out on September 24th. We'll talk about that when it comes out. um the We talked about it last week, but we did get a trailer 28 years late later, The Bone Temple. We got some new pictures as well, new new glimpses of what this movie is all about.
00:36:47
Speaker
Haven't seen Cillian Murphy yet, but we did see kind of a continuation of what what we saw in the in the first 28 years later. And we see pretty much all the characters that were introduced in that, and the big alpha zombie coming back too.
00:37:04
Speaker
Yeah, looks good. Coming out January 16th. Got a new trailer for Margot Robbie and Jacob Alardi's Weathering Heights. I know this is based off a book set in the olden days. Comes out Valentine's Day 2026. I believe this is the first time I've ever seen Jacob Alardi with a British accent in a movie. I've heard him in interviews and stuff, but first time I've seen it.
00:37:27
Speaker
um So yeah, the guy who did, what's the movie that Jacob was in? Saltburn did this movie. Yep. Okay. His follow-up. I loved Saltburn. know much I love that movie? Yeah, haven't seen it yet. So I'll be watching this.
00:37:40
Speaker
Yeah, I haven't seen it yet. um This trailer was awesome. Monster. Yes. We talked about it last week, the Ed Gain story. um Pretty much the origin of every horror movie you can think of, from Texas Chainsaw. Pretty much.
00:37:54
Speaker
Silence of the Lambs. All the classics. All the classic killing movies. All started with the real guy. This is a story about him. Charlie Hunnam playing him. Which is funny, because he only killed two people.
00:38:07
Speaker
Yep. That's the funniest thing, is like Ed Gain only killed two people. Yep. When I saw the side-by-side of Ed Gain and him, number one, yeah look at and look identical. Number two, I have seen that picture of Ed Gain before. He's just such an iconic person. I just didn't know who he was. I've seen that picture before in history books or something. Yeah, he just looks like a hick.
00:38:28
Speaker
Yeah, he looks like a hick right out of, yeah. he looks like He looks like the average person that lived in, like, Wisconsin in the Yeah. yep Like that you would think of, you know? And finally this week, came out yesterday, because it's it's at ah it's own up in Canada, they're previewing it, but John Candy, I Like Me, directed by Colin Hanks, produced by Ryan

John Candy Documentary Preview

00:38:48
Speaker
Reynolds. of ryan reynolds ah ah We got a date for coming out on Prime on October 10th, and we saw the first trailer for it, and it looks great.
00:38:56
Speaker
And I cannot wait for this. um Love documentaries. Love John Candy. Yeah, I just cannot wait for that. so ah Box Office last week. Weapons won first place. $10 million. Not huge.
00:39:08
Speaker
End of summer. Jaws 50. Second place. $8.1 million. And the new Darren Aronofsky Caught Stealing went for third place for $7.8 million. Amazon.
00:39:19
Speaker
um amazon Ending their Prime shared shipping. um I had no idea this was a thing that you could share your shipping to people outside your home.
00:39:29
Speaker
Other than sending packages while they're ending it. So now that you know that, October 1st, you cannot do it. um I've sent people packages before, family members and so forth, but I've never like shared it with anybody. so and i don't know how that worked. but yeah They're ending that basically because they want people to pay for Prime.
00:39:49
Speaker
This all has to do with streaming. They want people to share, not be sharing their Prime membership anymore. They want individuals to be paying the $14.99 a month if you didn't buy the annual for for Amazon Prime.
00:40:02
Speaker
So, yeah. um Walmart taking action. um They're kind of taking on Amazon Prime um with a video ah video offering now for a video subscription choices.
00:40:15
Speaker
um I believe we get i get my Paramount Plus through mus fur through Walmart Plus. I get that for free throughout the year. They're giving you an option for not only Paramount Plus, but you can choose between that or Peacock.
00:40:29
Speaker
And I believe you can switch back and forth every six months or something like that. I can't remember what the timeline was. But, yeah, I mean, i've like to have I like Paramount better than Peacock.
00:40:39
Speaker
um There is some, like, like the paper is on Peacock. Ted is on Peacock. There is some good stuff. Exclusives. We talked about it before. ah Psych, The Office, whatever. yeah um So, yeah, they kind of have their thing going.
00:40:52
Speaker
AEW announced that their all-out pay-per-view coming out on Saturday, September 20th is going to be the very first exclusive pay-per-view to be airing on HBO Max.
00:41:03
Speaker
Now you're saying, wow, they're taking the WWE model. They're going on there, you're getting pay-per-views on HBO Max. Well, hold the brakes. For $39.99 extra on top of the subscription price you're already paying for HBO Max.
00:41:18
Speaker
um You're getting a $10 savings to watch an AEW pay-per-view on something you already paid for. um I think they missed the mark on this one. If it was a little bit higher of a discount, maybe, but...
00:41:29
Speaker
um Yeah, I don't i don't know. $10 discount for something you already are are watching on HBO Max. Kind of a slippery slope of what cable used to be. We want say that streaming is turning into cable.
00:41:41
Speaker
um This is the first example of that. um And anti-piracy. going after Stream East. Basically what this was was live sports. You could watch everything from the UFC. The reason the reason why Stream East was always favored is, well, one, it was the first one for a long time that you could actually use your phone for.
00:42:02
Speaker
lot of them wouldn't work on your phone, like VIP Box wouldn't work on your phone for the longest time. And second, you could watch up to four games on the same screen. So it was very big amongst college kids who were in fantasy leagues.
00:42:14
Speaker
Okay, I can see that. Well, it went under. Yeah, well, I noticed. Not that I've ever used it or anything. I deleted it from my phone this week. I don't think I've ever opened it.
00:42:25
Speaker
um But out of Egypt, a whole bunch of stuff. They arrested like three or four people, confiscated millions of dollars, um computers, credit cards, completely closed down. So there's...
00:42:41
Speaker
Piracy is becoming a becoming a war on piracy and streaming helps that in a way. um All the streamers were kind of in the forefront of this as well. I think they teamed up with with Amazon and Netflix and everywhere, kind of team up with this coalition that was going after um all these bad guys.
00:43:00
Speaker
Speaking of which, so I logged into HBO to watch Peacemaker last night. ah got a nice little message on the screen that says, you may not be using an account that's within your home. Please sign up for your own. and I said, well, yes, I'm obviously not using my own account. And no, I will not sign up for it.
00:43:16
Speaker
Really? I was wondering when that was going to happen. Me too. So eventually I will getting my own HBO, which is fine. Yep. Because how much is HBO? It's like $25?
00:43:28
Speaker
I have no idea. I get it for free with AT&T, I don't know. Okay, I think it's something like that. But yeah, i mean HBO is the one that's worth paying over $20 for me if I'm going to have to pay for $20 for a streaming service.
00:43:41
Speaker
Eventually, that they're going to coming after that. where where you get like When I get HBO for free, they're going to be coming after that where they're not going to want to be doing that anymore. I think AT&T owned HBO back in the day. That's why it happened.
00:43:55
Speaker
They don't anymore. Which is why i thought they can't I thought they would have already canceled it, but the the deal must have gone for a certain amount of time. At the time, they said for life. I remember signing up for it. it said you get h yeah HBO for a life.
00:44:09
Speaker
So, yeah, we'll see we'll see how that turns out later on. But, yeah. um Speaking of HBO, they changed their name of t six TV channels. um HBO 2 becomes HBO Hits. HBO Signature becomes HBO Drama.
00:44:22
Speaker
HBO Zone becomes HBO Movies. ah More Max becomes Cinemax Hits. And Action Max becomes act Cinemax Action. So, yeah, they're just changing names. if you have If you have cable, you know all about how different there are different versions of HBO on there. This is basically what that is.
00:44:40
Speaker
um Announced yesterday, Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson have reached agreement for a fight. What do you think about that? I mean, that's kind of weird that they agreed to that at their age. Mike Tyson raised like...
00:44:52
Speaker
Bro weighs like 100 pounds more than him or something like that. yeah um Interesting. Interesting, yeah. Okay.
00:45:03
Speaker
Yeah, weird. ah Bad news. We talked about it last week, how excited we are for the movies coming out this year. Mortal Kombat 2 has now been moved.
00:45:15
Speaker
It was supposed to come out of October of this year. Now it's coming out next summer, a May 15th of 2026. We did get a new poster for I believe I have it here.
00:45:28
Speaker
um the
00:45:33
Speaker
um so yeah ah Live action Street Fighter movie um has a date in October 16th of 2026. um and Paramount Legendary signed a new three year deal for global distribution.
00:45:46
Speaker
Announced all the cast as well, so that's exciting. of Julia Garner confirms that she's set to portray Madonna in an upcoming biopic. um She looks exactly like Madonna in the early 80s, so I can see that.
00:45:58
Speaker
We've got a new look at Oscar Isaac in the Frankenstein movie, Guillermo del Toro. Cannot wait for that. Comes out on Netflix, I believe, in a month and a half. ah Two months, maybe.
00:46:10
Speaker
um New look at Christy, starring Sidney Sweeney, about the boxer ah boxer christ named Christy. I can't remember her name. so new new no looks aren New looks at her. um Scrubs reboot bringing back pretty much the whole entire cast. The last person that was a holdout was John C. McGinley who was in Office Space. was going to say, what are the bobs?
00:46:31
Speaker
One of the Bobson office space. yeah Coming back is Dr. Cox. um Cary Elwes. i going to be Going to be becoming the president in a very young Frankenstein pilot on FX.
00:46:45
Speaker
Mel Brooks in charge of this. Cary Elwes teaming up with Mel Brooks again. He was, in court of course, in Robin Hood Men in Tights. So, yeah. Exciting. um netflix no wasn't Netflix. It was Paramount.
00:47:00
Speaker
announced ah call a call of duty movie in the works um gonna be under our paramount skydance um the only thing i heard about this other than it becoming a fact was um spielberg wanted this movie and almost had the movie uh but he wanted full creative control and and everything for the movie and paramount was like no that's not happening um So yeah, they and ended up going with Paramount Skydance for the

Tron Movie Marketing Strategy

00:47:28
Speaker
movie. So we'll see. Call of Duty, big, huge franchise in the game world.
00:47:31
Speaker
We'll see that see if that translates into the movie world or not. um Got some brand new posters for Tron Aries. Why are they using Mr. Beast in the marketing for this movie now? I saw that today. Did you see that today? I saw that today, yeah.
00:47:45
Speaker
I mean, um not for nothing. I mean, Mr. Beast is like you know successful, I suppose, if you want to consider him successful. I'd say he's successful. It's a movie. He's a success. Slightly. He's success. um But he's also, um people think he's kind of a douchebag.
00:47:59
Speaker
He is. Especially people that you'd want to market this movie to, which is kind of weird. Yeah. But, yeah. Yeah, we'll see. um There is a popcorn bucket coming out for Tron as well, a three d light cycle that does light up.
00:48:14
Speaker
ah Just regular but pop but but buckets there, cups, and everything coming out for this movie. So, um... comes out October 10th, so a month from now. So i cannot wait for that. Got a brand new poster. I thought we were beginning the trailer this week, but we didn't, for Wake Up Dead. Yeah. Sequel to Knives Out.
00:48:28
Speaker
Comes out at Netflix on December 12th. Are you going to theaters to see this with you? If you are, yeah. If you are, I'll go. Yeah. these These movies are so much better in theater.
00:48:39
Speaker
Yeah. it Definitely will go. Also coming out, Avatar. ah The Way of Water coming out for one week only. Coming back to three d um also coming out it uh returning to theaters the end of this month 9 24 for the preview for the new series it welcome to dairy so uh yeah uh the it's the the time of uh because they're making a lot of money just just movies are being re-released uh like crazy right now uh they're joining the top of the box office for a reason because people want to see big movies back on the screen so
00:49:12
Speaker
Exciting. um We also got Welcome to Dairy. Don't look at that yet. Wrong picture. Welcome to Dairy coming out October 26th on HBO Max.
00:49:23
Speaker
It's going to be premiering, so we cannot wait for that. ah Phoebe Waller-Bridge is going to be the creator, writer, and exclusive executive producer for the Laura Croft movie on, I believe, Amazon...
00:49:37
Speaker
I don't know where that's going. think I think it is Amazon. Sophie Turner from Game of Thrones has joined the cast. She's going playing Lara Croft. So, um yeah, interesting.
00:49:48
Speaker
That movie, that franchise has been resurrected so many times. What's her name from... Alex Machina played her recently. Of course... Alicia Valcander, whatever name is. They were supposed to do like two or three movies, I believe, with her, and they just it didn't make any money, so they didn't... they didn't make um The Muppet Show being rebooted reportedly. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg in charge of that.
00:50:11
Speaker
um No official word on that, but there's been some rumblings. um And the cast of SNL has been shaken up. um This is the first time I've actually known two people in the in the ensemble that have been added this year.
00:50:25
Speaker
Cam Peterson, Cam Patterson, I mean He's been on Kill Tony, viral comic, and Veronica Soazowska. don't know her lot how to say her last name, but um she was recently in Tire. She played Shane's girlfriend. Oh, yes. That's why she looks familiar. Okay. yeah and And, of course, ah yeah, I think this starts in the new season it starts the end of the month, so there may be some more changes that haven't been announced yet.
00:50:51
Speaker
So I'll have to wait and see. But Saturday Night Live in their 51st season. So... We'll have to wait to see how that turns out. Joining the cast of Harry Potter, the new series, joining the cast, joining Harry Potter again, Warwick Davis' is press Professor Flitwick.
00:51:09
Speaker
He was in all the Harry Potter movies, now playing the same exact role in the series. um And some other maybe familiar characters you've seen here and there, some kids joining the cast as well. So, yeah.
00:51:20
Speaker
Um...
00:51:23
Speaker
Coming out on PS5, PC, and Xbox, a special edition First Light 007 coming out. um And now it comes with a replica gun with bullets. Doesn't work.
00:51:35
Speaker
So for $300, I don't know if a gun doesn't work, do you really want it as a display piece? I mean, if you have the money, why not? I mean, yeah it's going to go on the shelf anyways. I mean, what's the difference in buying that and buying a Hutt toy?
00:51:49
Speaker
Right, yeah, you're right. Yeah, you're right. But yeah, does come up with the game and everything else, so. Yeah, plus you get the game. Give us some swag. Swag. Stuff we all get.
00:52:02
Speaker
Come on, son. You know what that's right. We got some pop figures to talk about. We got some pop figures from Nosferatu, ah pop figures from Mortal Kombat, and we got a Rorschach.
00:52:12
Speaker
ah Speaking of the Watchmen, all and announced this week. um That was basically it. Not a lot of swag this week. ah Tom Holland talks about making Spider-Man a brand new day.
00:52:24
Speaker
ah Quote, I have been actively sifting through the internet. Well, that's a bad idea. And trying to best understand what it is that the fans want from spidermant from a Spider-Man movie. And that's been my driving force in these pitch meetings. so in other words...
00:52:36
Speaker
Going through all the posts and what we want. We want Venom. We want this. We want that. We want Spider-Man. and and We want um Mary Jane. We want we want a whole bunch of stuff. This is what he's looking through. And he's actually going into the producers and fighting for it. So we'll see what shows up in Brand New Day, if that if that helps or not. but yeah um I saw this fan casting and I and i love i love her in...
00:53:01
Speaker
in Wow, it's blanking me. Oh my god. Sandman on Netflix. She played she played Death.
00:53:13
