Speaker: Welcome to Three Little Fishes. We're three sisters who grew up in the Midwest together, but have since spread across the country. i live in Los Angeles. I'm in Nashville. And I live in Philadelphia. We are all married with children, have all had careers, but now we stay at home with our families. Join us as we share secrets and stories about being women, wives and mothers. We welcome you to laugh along, learn something new, reach out and join our conversation.

Speaker: So let's jump in.

Speaker: What's up, fishes? what's What's up girls? Good to see you. So you guys, there's been some crazy things happening in ah out with the celebrities. Like it's been kind of a lot of sadness. Sad stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Like, so I feel like we have to mention um Presley Gerber, who is Cindy Crawford's son, just passed away, they suspect from a drug overdose 27. I'm like in shock about that.

Speaker: Oh my gosh. And I feel so like crushed for this family because I have read that they He's been struggling with addiction for about 10 years and they've really been trying to be supportive. And he's been in rehab a couple of times and they've kept it very private, but also been very loving and supportive. And I just think as a parent, it's like,

Speaker: You did all the right things. It's not your fault. Right. I even read you are I read something that I think he said even that he thought that this was his last time in rehab. Like he was kind of like on the up, which is even more sad because. i know You know, why? do you know Well, I think that that's the really create the hard thing about addiction. Right. And when you're doing like hard drugs is you never know what's going to be unlocked in your brain. Right. I always say this. And like, you don't know if you're that person that you've unlocked a door or opened a window that you just can't ever shut.

Speaker: And you just don't know you're that person until you try the drug. So that's why we're always like, don't try them. Right. Because you just don't know. Well, you don't know what will happen. I mean, yeah. yeah It's like it's so scary. And speaking of drug overdose, Hayden Penitres, her cosmetology report just came back. And it is confirmed. It was fentanyl.

Speaker: Yeah, it's sad. You just don't know what stuff's laced with as well. That's what the problem is, right? it's terrible. It's terrible. It's my worst fear. Yeah, mine too. Like if somebody being slipped something or taking something and not realizing You know, we keep telling our kids like, do not do drugs. I mean, we've told them this since they were like itty bitty. Do not smoke and do not do drugs. I don't care. Right.

Speaker: I guess we we're like, we don't care if you drink, which maybe is not a good thing either, but I'm like, I would prefer you to do that versus doing drugs. I feel the same way because it's regulated. Like, you know, what's in the alcohol, you don't know what's in anything else. And that's what I keep trying to tell my kids.

Speaker: I mean, right I don't know. I just feel like I have to say this. like Alcohol can also be very dangerous. So that can also get you in a lot of trouble. Of course. And you can become addicted to it. So we're not saying, do alcohol. You'll be cool. We're not saying that. No, no, no. Right. That's not what we're saying. Right. It's all bad. It's bad for you.

Speaker: And then Dunkin' Sheik. I know. Passed away, the musician. And it kind of rocked our house here. He's only, what, 57? Yeah, 56 or 57. He had that big hit, barely breathing, which I won't sing for everybody, but like go back and listen to it. It was such a hit. um yeah But yeah, it's super, super sad. um There's been some a good things happening. like Well, i have well one more one more thing I just want to mention is you guys know the comedian Carrot Top? Yeah. He is hospitalized in Las Vegas for

Speaker: Um, they are saying they're suspecting a suicidal attempt and it's also coming out that maybe he has been, he tried it because he was being extorted for money in regards to some sex tape. We don't know if that's true or not, but how it's all just so terrible. Yeah.

Speaker: So hopefully he recovers and nobody's trying to extort money from him. That's terrible. Yeah. But yeah, onto some happier news. We are a little behind the announcement of this, but um Lady Gaga just had her first baby. Yep. Congratulations.

Speaker: And so, and Millie Brown and Jake. Jake. Bon Jovi. Yeah. They just adopted their second baby. So that's kind of exciting. I've watched Jake and Billy kind of like through the media a little bit. And they're so adorable. Like they have this big farm and all these animals and she like,

Speaker: loves the idea of having these adoptive children and offering them this like wonderful life. And, yeah you know, her in-laws are amazing and always over. And I just think it's adorable. So she's so, they're so young to do all this, but I just feel like they are, you know, grabbing life by the throat and having a big time with it. So it's so fun to see.

Speaker: Yeah. Lucky kids. Yeah. Lucky kids for sure. um Okay. And then, What has been making, i don't know if you guys have had a lot of talk in your house or with your friends, but Sydney Sweeney is back in the news for her advertisement um for online betting. where she's basically naked and she's just covered by balls.

Speaker: um Sports balls. this Sports balls. And she's really... Balls, yes. I should say sports balls. Let's clarify.

Speaker: um And you know, it's selling, you know, sports betting and you know, she's just out there and she's like, people have been outraged about this advertised or this campaign.

Speaker: um And I thought that maybe this would be something to talk about, but before we get into it, I just want to remind everybody to please hit that subscribe button and please join our podcast. And we're trying to get our podcast to grow. We would love it for you to invite your favorite fishes to also jump in and join our conversation and hit that subscribe button.

Speaker: Fill out the form. It's easy. Yep. Let's jump in. Scythi Sweeney is killing it. Not only in the movies business, but just like she's probably making way more money doing advertising.

Speaker: So she did like that gene um advertisement last year and now she's doing this. I mean, good for her in a way. Like she, I heard she got some equity in this Novig company that she's promoting. And I mean, you know, I was thinking about it cause we were, we knew we were going to talk about this topic and I'm like,

Speaker: So she is very appealing. Like she has huge boobs and she's, you know, got a great body. i mean, I don't think she's that pretty, honestly. i don't know what the big deal is about her, but...

Speaker: Her banging body, her banging and big boobs body. Yeah. Good for her though. i mean, yeah you know, if you've got it, like that's what you do. Like, I mean, if this was a man, i was just thinking about this.

Speaker: If this is a man who is gorgeous, all the women would be flocking him if he was doing the advertisement for whatever. Yeah. You know, that we like, you know what I'm saying? So it's no different except that it is promoting gambling, which, you know, I don't love, but you know, sex does. So I think that that's, but I think that that's my rub. I think what got me thinking about this is listen, cash in, this is when you're making your money. You're not going always look this way. You, yeah you do have a gorgeous body. I totally get it. My problem with it is it's not about women's sports. This had nothing to do with women's sports.

Speaker: So you're saying that because there was some comments from women athletes suggesting that she is somehow taking away from their... Right.

Speaker: I mean, do do people bet on women's sports as much as they bet on men's sports, I wonder? I don't know. I don't know. But I don't think it had to do with taking away from women's sports. I think that there is a... Demeaning women sexually? Like, that that she's just like this sexual being instead of... Well, they're saying that you're demeaning women in sports. Their argument is had being naked on a basketball hoop with, you know...

Speaker: Basketball, you know, covering your boobs is, you know, hurting, you know, women's basketball because they you're sexualizing them. And I don't think they're trying to sexualize women in sports or degrade women in sports. This particular ad, this particular ad was trying to sell sex and it was trying to sell betting.

Speaker: And that's what I have. I have a problem with this online betting and trying to grab the youth, our young men. And, you know, for this betting, it's everywhere. Like we were watching football over the weekend with our son and the amount of gaming,

Speaker: advertisements that that came up about online betting, it was ridiculous. I felt like it was like every other ad and it comes up on other social feeds. You know, it's just constant of make this bet, make this parlay. I'm going to give you free money for you to have this free bet.

Speaker: It's just very, it's constantly like poking them on the shoulder to be like, try this, do this, do this. Nothing's going to happen to you. It's harmless. Right. I don't know if that's true. i think, i mean, what do you guys think? Do you think it's great to see all these online buddy ads and targeting our young men, particularly like we have young boys, like that's what these ads are targeting specifically.

Speaker: i mean, I don't know if they're targeting young people more than they're targeting any other man. i think they're targeting men because men probably gamble more than women. I mean, i don't love gambling just in general. I've worked too hard for my money. i do not find it relaxing or fun or energizing to go to Vegas or gamble. i just It's just not my thing. I don't like it. I want to keep my money.

Speaker: But I do know like our son has done some online bets. I don't think he does a lot of it because he doesn't have any extra money. But I don't know that these, I don't know in particular this like Sydney Sweeney ad. I don't know that it's necessarily targeting younger men. I think it's targeting men in general.

Speaker: Men love to watch beautiful women. I notice more like the Kevin Hart like ads are out there for draft cakes or you know there's a lot of advertising because I think these companies are trying to capture this new market because it's just now becoming legal. I don't know how we've gotten to this place where we have legal gambling that's available 24 hours a day. So I think to me, that's the bigger problem is access.

Speaker: Well, the Supreme Court, you have the Supreme Court to thank for that because in 2018, they made the decision to expand or to make it legal. And I think it's like in over 30 states now that it's legalized.

Speaker: Yeah. um So I don't understand that either. I'm not sure why the Supreme Court thought that that was a great idea. i haven't like dug into the thought process on that. But I think for me,

Speaker: the we haven't caught up to the technology and i think you just alluded to it like it we have smartphones in our hands all the time our kids have had them they're growing up with them they've had them in their hands forever so it like they get these advertisements when they're gaming they have when they're looking on their instagram like all this all the advertising that comes up and their their frontal lobe has not been developed yet. So it's just like they're being taught for this instant gratification of like, try it, take a hit, see what happens.

Speaker: And I think it's a hidden risk for these young boys that they're going to try it, try it, try it. And then before you know it, they can be in a lot of trouble. Yeah. I mean, this Novig company, i kind of, I looked up some of the data, 72% of

Speaker: of males are looking at this sports betting site. Yeah. 72% are males. So that's a huge number of men.

Speaker: And that's why Sydney Sweeney is on there because men are gravitate to women and she looks good. And if you look at their ad on, I looked up their ad on the smartphone and it's like, she's in her underwear at the top. And then you kind of scroll down and she's even, you want to see what else she's not wearing, you know? Right. Yeah. It keeps you on that site longer.

Speaker: And then maybe you'll do something because you like what you're looking at. And maybe you'll come back to it because you it's appealing to have a gorgeous woman on this site, whereas some other sites may not have those, right?

Speaker: so So, I mean, it's like excel right it's a marketing it's a marketing ploy to get them to like, or want to look at it. For sure. i think the I think the question I'm trying to ask is,

Speaker: I think this is a bigger issue than the marketing is brilliant. Like they've had a lot. Nobody knew who this Novik was it no is it novi no no was but noveig before this ad. Nobody knew who they were. They were just launching. So like for an advertisement standpoint, like they hit a home run, right? Everybody's talking about it. Like left like whatever side you're on you're they're talking about it and everybody knows who they are.

Speaker: So from that standpoint, it's brilliant. Brilliant for Cindy Sweeney. Like she's making hay when the sun is shining. People want to pay her money to do this ad. No problem. Like I'll do it.

Speaker: So my problem isn't with that. My problem is, is that we're glorifying gambling and online and making it so accessible. And not, I just don't think that we're catching up with the technology. And my concern is the addiction with gambling and how dangerous it is and why we are making it seem like this is no big deal. It's like, go get a Coke, go get a Coke. This is no big deal. You know how like all these people are advertising Gatorade. This will make you, this will, you know, help you when you're playing your sports.

Speaker: I just don't understand why we're glorifying gaming so much and not only glorifying it, but we're making it so easy. Like we have the frictionless apps. We have the instant wagers. We have the push notifications. Like back in the day, you used to have to physically go somewhere to place the bet. Right.

Speaker: Right. And now there just seems to be no guardrails. They don't care who's seen it. And as soon as people can legally do it, they want them to be all in on this. And they keep saying, like, sometimes they'll have an add on from somebody to say, please gain responsibly. But it's very you don't see very many of those. And I'm wondering, do you want people to gain responsibly? I'm not sure. Yeah, I mean, I think um the responsible gaming council I saw said 10% of young men show signs of gambling disorder.

Speaker: So we definitely need to watch our young population. And I mean, I think even my boys have done online gambling, and I know some of their friends have done it and they I think it's a great when it's a win, but I also know that they've had losses and, you know, those losses add up and then they end up in debt and, you know, it kind of tumbles, right? It's, I think,

Speaker: In my household, we definitely have had a discussion about gambling and like what it means. And, you know, you can't gamble stuff you don't have. So I think people need to have conversations about it because it is, i think, not going away specifically because it's available all the time now.

Speaker: Well, it's interesting. i ah I asked a friend of mine who... is like a semi-professional gambler. And he said he doesn't like online gambling at all because of that reason. Like the access is, it to him, it should be sort of an event. It shouldn't be this every, you know, moment of the day accessible type of thing. i think you're right, Nancy, there isn't a lot of guardrails up I do feel like vices have always been advertised sexually. i mean, look back on cigarettes, look at all the alcohol, like there's a lot

Speaker: that is just sort of like how we advertise these sort of vices. Yeah. I think, you know, it's, it definitely, we could be in a danger zone very quickly with this because you can get around some of the stop gaps, you know, electronically and, yeah you know, people are smart and they can find the back doors and figure out how to like maneuver. And I think,

Speaker: you know You're right. i you know i kind of pulled my son who's in who's like 20. I pulled his friends like, do you guys like online gambling, blah, blah, blah. And they all, I think, have dabbled in it.

Speaker: But they all have said it's not something they do regularly because they don't have extra money. right And I think that's the healthy thing to do is if you want to have an source of entertainment and you have an extra $50 in your pocket that you just don't care if you lose, okay, that's fine.

Speaker: But you have to be like very responsible about how you do this source of entertainment. It cannot be like your job to gamble because then you're going down a rabbit hole, You know, I think I've said it before, like we've opened this genie bottle. There's no getting the genie back in the bottle. We just have to figure out how to educate and limit and figure out how to get some guardrails in place so that people aren't, you know losing everything and ending up on the streets because it could happen easily.

Speaker: Well, and I think by the time people sometimes realize that their problem or people around them realize that somebody's having a problem, it's too late. because they've been suffering in silence, like, right. It's like, you're doing it in a, behind closed doors. It's not like watching somebody drink or be on drugs. You can physically see the effects of what's happening.

Speaker: And I think that that makes this even a crazier addiction. i think this is a problem for a lot of this like younger generation. You know, if you are not getting out in person and engaging with other people, your peer groups, and you are isolating yourself, that opens the door for all kinds of problems. So, you know, I think...

Speaker: Technology has been an amazing thing for everyone. i mean, the world is at our fingertips, but the world is at our fingertips and you really don't have to leave your house to have access to the world anymore. And I don't know that that's a healthy way to live your life. So I think some of the things as parents we can do is the second those kids get a phone, i mean, we talk about it, like don't take pictures of yourself and send them.

Speaker: Don't say anything in a text you wouldn't tell somebody in person. Don't be buying things online unless you've gotten permission. Don't give out your personal information. Don't tell people where you live. Like there's a whole gamut of safety. and I think this is another layer of that, that, you know, all we can do is talk about it until we're blue in the face and hope and pray that our kids and our young adults and our adults, you know,

Speaker: Don't make a catastrophic mistake and bet the firm that they don't own. Right. I actually feel comforted because I did talk to my college child over the weekend about this topic.

Speaker: And I said, are you like more apt to use this Novig app? gambling site because you saw Sydney Sweeney.

Speaker: He's like, well, I mean, she is attractive mom. was whatever. But he's like, no, he's like, I'm not going to gamble just because she's on it.

Speaker: And I was like, okay, I feel like that's a healthy, that was like a healthy response. So, I mean, hopefully he's more um on top of it as far as the limits go, because you have to have limits. Yeah, um you do. I mean, I had the same conversation. i was with my 20 year old this weekend and I asked the same question and he looked at me like I had two heads. He was like, I'm not influenced by that stuff. He's like, you know, gambling, maybe it can be fun. I don't really do it because I don't have extra money.

Speaker: um I'm not influenced by Sidney Sweeney at all. He's like, is it a little amoral? i kind of do feel that way. But, you know, people get to do whatever they want. Right.

Speaker: I also was slightly encouraged. I don't know. I don't know why they have that center and other, you know, I just don't know. And the reality is we've talked about addiction in this way too. It's like a lot of times you don't know what's going to trigger your stuff inside your own head. That's exactly true. Right.

Speaker: So you do have to be cautious and, you know, young adults are not cautious, especially young men. I mean, they're the risk takers in the world, which is amazing, powerful superpower, but also like one of the scariest things as a parent to step back and watch because they make mistakes and they take risks that, you know, people in our generation do not do.

Speaker: And you just hope and pray. It's not going to be like cataclysmic. i mean And not only that, but they also have this thing wired in them like the youth don't do. Like I am smart and I'm going to outsmart a system.

Speaker: And I think in particular, when you're talking about gambling, the house always wins. Like for sure. Yeah. You know what i mean? And so there's no like getting around that. That hasn't changed. And I think even now with all the systems in place, it's, it's, it's,

Speaker: it's favoring the house more than it's favoring us more than ever. Right. um It's a source of entertainment, not income. Yeah. Gambling is a source of entertainment, not income. Everybody hear us. do you like did do hear Did you hear any of like any of the these kids, friends talk about or or anybody around you? Like, have you heard people say, oh, gosh, I know somebody who's gotten in trouble like Yeah, so I sent a group text to some of jack my son's friends and one of them came back and said, I used to do it, but then and I did have some big wins, but then I also lost everything too. So he's like, I don't really do it. He goes, i I do know a couple of people who have lost more than they should have. And so, you know, it's easy to get into trouble with it. So you have to really be careful. And he's like, I just don't do it anymore.

Speaker: So I thought that was sort of insightful and smart to recognize. Like you can get in trouble pretty quick. I think my children's friends have gotten into trouble a little bit, like owing people money and things like that at and that at a young age. So you definitely can get into trouble.

Speaker: And just something I'm just going quickly mention, then we can move on, is like for when you're talking about addiction for me, like as I'm talking about mental health, It's a perfect storm, in my opinion, about all this gambling stuff and how it's so pervasive.

Speaker: um It's always accessible. It offers instant reward or losses. It encourages chasing losses, a hallmark of addictive behavior. And it also lacks the natural stopping points of traditional gaming environments, which is what your friend Linda was saying. that you have to physically show up to place. So I don't know. I just think it's something that we need to be talking more of. Like, again, I don't, for me, it was less about Sydney Sweeney than it is about this like hard advertisement for these gaming people.

Speaker: And I think it's really dangerous. And you know, um Scott Galloway really is talking about this too, a lot. He's an and NYU professor. He has podcasts and he's really worried about men, young men in particular. And he's had a lot to say about this too.

Speaker: He's an interesting, if you're looking for more, Yeah, man. People talking about this. I think gone are the days that you, like, just go to the Vegas trip and hang out with, like, see the crazy shows and all the strippers and gamble and, like, you're like, oh, my God, I got to get out of here. And then yeah then you go home.

Speaker: But, like, yeah now. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas is no longer the case, right? Yeah, Vegas is now in your living room, in your bedroom. It's everywhere you are. so I mean, I just think, yeah, it's scary. I mean, it's potentially very scary. People have to have inner self-control.

Speaker: I do hear you, Nancy, where you're, you know, people get to live their life however they want. They, know, if you want to buy something that's bad for you, like, go for it. Like, that's your choice. But I do think, you know, there is...

Speaker: an element of online gambling that is potentially very dangerous. And we need to, as parents, really keep bringing it up and reminding you don't have extra money.

Speaker: Right. I don't have extra money. and I don't either. That is like, woohoo, like let's have a big time with it. No, that's not yours. No. i agree. We have to keep talking and educating and just keep having these open dialogues, I think is the best what we can do right now to combat it. Like that's all we have, right? That's all we have. Yeah. We can talk until we're blue in the face. I mean, some of the kids will listen, some won't. And that's, I, again, it's like, that's why I think about like Cindy Crawford and her family and losing their son.

Speaker: I'm sure like everything I've read is they, they tried to do everything right and it still went sideways. Yeah. So that's the sad thing about life is you can do everything right.

Speaker: and it still can go sideways, but you got to keep trying and just keep dripping on all the kids and start early. Yeah. Yep. So good luck out there. All right, guys, what's for dinner?

Speaker: Okay. So I have this really good friend that is just like this master chef, but I used to ask her every day, like, what are you making for dinner? What's for dinner? What's for dinner? And one time she said, honey chicken. And I was like,

Speaker: okay, what's honey chicken? You're like, that sounds really interesting. know. It's actually so delicious and so crazy simple. And I remember she was like, we have baseball tonight and just doing honey chicken. And I was like, okay, talk to me talk me through this. So I'm going to tell you, it's so easy. You just take some chicken breast, you dice it up, you pan cook it, And then I use like a little glass measuring cup and I do half soy sauce, half honey, and you mix it together and you pour it into the hot pan with the chicken and it bubbles up and it makes this yummy sauce. And I just do the chicken with the sauce over some cooked rice.

Speaker: if I'm being fancy, I will add vegetables to it or I'll add like, you know, some fresh ginger or whatever, but a lot of times, yeah, I mean, you know, when you're, when you're being a fast dinner, this is like a quick dinner. It comes together in like 15 minutes. Like,

Speaker: I wouldn't always, but like I'll do a side salad or I'll do broccoli or I'll roast something or whatever. So you can make it your own, but the basic is soy sauce, honey mixed together, poured over cooked chopped chicken, poured over rice, and you're good. So we'll put the recipe in the show notes. This is like one of those dinners that's like sweet and um salty together, and it comes together so fast. but That sounds good.

Speaker: It sounds really good. My people, I think, would really like that. And I love that it sounds it's like one pot, basically. Yeah, it's so easy. And it comes together super quick. um I mean, I use chicken breast, but if you wanted to use thighs, like do whatever works for you. But that's the basic premise of it. And then...

Speaker: You know, if you want to, you could add a pinch of cayenne or some crushed pepper flakes. My husband can't have anything spicy, so I leave it out. But you can zhuzh it however you want. My Hannah feels the same way. If she sees even a pepper on there, she's like, did you put the spice on this?

Speaker: Yes. I'm like, yes, I did. They're buddies in that way. Um, so this podcast, I feel like was a little heavier today. Like we started kind of with some heavier stuff.

Speaker: And because it started heavy, I forgot to tell you guys something that you might find funny. So we ended up going to friends house for a little so celebratory dinner on Saturday, they were celebrating some good news at their house.

Speaker: And we get there and there's the my friend is like, oh, did I tell you that we got guinea pigs? She's and I was like, no, you didn't. And so Johanna's like, guinea pigs?

Speaker: Woo! No, I need three. So, you know, so they, I love this for them. ah They have two They have two. One of them is Gus Gus. And I can't remember what the other name was. Oh, how cute is that name? Oh my God. And they are in love with these guinea pigs and they rescued these guinea pigs, which I didn't know that was a thing that you could rescue guinea pigs. And Johanna is holding one of these guinea pigs in her lap and she's beaming. She's like, you guys need one. You need one.

Speaker: She's like, mom. oh my gosh, we've got to get one of these. And I was like, my friends were laughing at me because I was like, with all sincerity, I'm like, I do not want to hold that. And our family is complete.

Speaker: That's what Linda, you you were ringing through my head when you're like, our family's complete. We're done. Well, you did have gerbils, remember? you probably, that would be up your alley, wouldn't it, Nancy?

Speaker: No, I didn't have gerbils. I had hamsters that Nancy killed. Oh, hamsters. Okay, Nancy did not kill them. They killed themselves. Okay, I'm not going have debate with you. You let them go on the ceiling. Yes, not on purpose. If Linda wasn't so mean and would let me pet one, it would never have happened to begin with. They wouldn't have gotten out. They wouldn't have gotten in the ceiling. And it wouldn't have been a disaster. You like them. my God.

Speaker: I think, I mean, if you got a guinea pig, I can only imagine what your Maine Coon cat would to it. Oh God. That would be terrible. That would be terrible.

Speaker: Yeah. i mean, it would be horrific. And if the cat didn't get to them, your black lab would get to them. And then you've got like a crime scene to clean up. Ew.

Speaker: I mean, on all levels, my family's complete on all levels. So congratulations to my friends. just got their guinea pigs. They're adorable.

Speaker: Okay. We don't want a crime scene happening. No, no crime scene. Well, we want to thank you for listening to our podcast and letting us sister jump into your day. Please make sure to follow, rate, and review us. We definitely want your feedback.

Speaker: We hope you all have a great weekend. Sisters out.
