Podcast Introduction and Jujutsu Kaisen Overview

On another exciting episode of the Animation Deliberation Podcast, our favorite sorcerers are back as we are talking Season 2, Episode 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Hidden Inventory. Right after these ads, we have no control over. Sing along if you know the words. One, two, three, it's time for animation, deliberation, a conversation, and a celebration of a favorite action animated series, yeah.
00:00:25
Speaker
Welcome back to another episode of Animation Deliberation, the podcast where we take action animation and cartoons seriously, but not too seriously. I'm your host Suhara Lee, and we are very, very, very excited to talk some Jujutsu Kaisen. This is a show that I finally got to watch for the first time binge at all last year because somebody had told me to
00:00:45
Speaker
go with them to the theater to watch the movie and boy am I glad that I did. This is excellent storytelling, excellent animation, probably the closest thing to Team 7 and Naruto that we've gotten since Naruto. And lord knows I'm excited to just talk about season 2.
00:01:01
Speaker
As you guys have noticed, I'm the only one here today meaning I have no notes. I have no script I'm just gonna be all over the place and that's just what happens when I'm by myself.

Character Confusion and Introductions

00:01:11
Speaker
So Take that for what it is a lot of people have been Texting me about how they've been confused with this first episode a lot of them did not know that there was going to be this venture back in time and
00:01:27
Speaker
But that's what we're getting. It's 2006. Satoro Gojo. The story is kind of like based around when he was a second year student at Jiu Jitsu High.
00:01:37
Speaker
And I will admit that even though I did have the time to not have the time made the time, there was very inconvenient times that I was rewatching this. But in my rewatch, there was like one or two people that I didn't quite notice or recognize. I know when we were first speculating about the season when we saw the characters for the first time, I didn't recognize Shoko. So we thought that there was just some
00:02:05
Speaker
you know mystery character that was part of this team and then you wonder like we're getting to see what happened between Gojo and Gato and I thought that she was like some sort of like collateral damage in their spats but turns out that she's a character that is alive and well and active in our current season so
00:02:26
Speaker
That was the only one that I kind of need some clarification on and for those of you who did not get a chance to rewatch season one or the film Jujutsu Kaisen Zero before going into this season, that was one of the characters. I'll go through the other ones that we got to see.
00:02:42
Speaker
Obviously, Saturo Gojo we mentioned, Suguro Ghetto. I think the movie was the first time that we got to see him in action. It was the first time like really, you know, flexing his powers. And I really want to I'm glad that they're doing these first five episodes as his flashback because there's a lot of mystery about him and where he stands. And we got a good peek of that in the movie, which was like
00:03:12
Speaker
season one was current events and then the movie was in the past and then now we're even going further in the past so it's like lay all of this stuff out so that when we hit this 18 episode streak of current events we kind of have like all of the framework
00:03:32
Speaker
One of the reasons I was happy that I did get to watch the movie because it was a prequel movie is that they talk about the events of this movie very heavily in season one. So even from like the first two or three episodes when they mentioned like that event and that night and that fight.
00:03:49
Speaker
I already knew what was going on and I understood the characters they were talking about because I had the movie to preface and that's why I always tell people that if they're trying to get into the show, the movie actually is a good way to start it and see if that's something that intrigues you because it definitely did intrigue me. And then I watched the show. Now I love the show. All right. So, Utahime, I think it's Iori, we'll just call it Utahime, was one that took me a minute to register.
00:04:17
Speaker
It was interesting that we started off the show with her and her maybe being on a mission together. This is one that we haven't seen too much action in, but it was kind of fun just seeing her as the noob and being tutored and trying to figure some stuff out in her early days as being a jujitsu sorcerer with how much Gojo picks on her in season one. It was great to see like just kind of how far back this teasing really goes.
00:04:44
Speaker
We talked about Shoko already. She is actually the school doctor. She's the one who was operating on Itadori's corpse when Sukuna ripped his heart out. So we've seen her a lot. And like I said, we know she's alive and well. Mei-mei is the one that is very money obsessed. She was just kind of chilling and being mentor.
00:05:08
Speaker
in this first episode but in the actual season she's the one that has the huge braid that goes in front of her face and then we have Masamichi Yaga who is in current events the principal but he was Gojo's teacher at the time of this episode so those are the characters that we have that we've seen before and this episode was very

Plot Deep Dive: Haunted House Investigation

00:05:32
Speaker
foundation building it was just setting the premise of what's going on and what the world is like and what we're expecting and towards the end of the episode we start to get um
00:05:46
Speaker
enough of a cliffhanger to just kind of show it's like, all right, it's all business from here because they kind of gave us the framework of what the story is going to be, what they're going for, what the objective is. And now it's just straight into action from there. So as for every episode, I would just give you the plot in case you haven't watched it in a couple of days and you need a little refresher.
00:06:04
Speaker
In the past, the younger utahime and meime are assigned to investigate a haunted house that many people have gone missing from. While inspecting inside, the two realize they are trapped in an endless hallway as a result of the cursed spirit. Before they can plan their escape, second year students Satoru Gojo and Suguro Geto and Shoko Irae arrive with the former two easily disposing of the building and curse. Due to neglecting an open curtain,
00:06:29
Speaker
They are reprimanded by Principal Yaga Jujutsuhai. After Gojo and Geito have a disagreement about the relationship between sorcerers and non-sorcerers, they are assigned a job courtesy of Master Tengen. Every 500 years to counteract his immortality-cursed technique to prevent him from evolving beyond that of a human, Tengen merges himself with the being known as a Plasma Star Vessel. Gojo and Geito are hired to protect the vessel,
00:06:56
Speaker
a girl named Rico Amanai, who is being targeted by two groups. The cursed user sucked Q and the religious group Time Vessel Association. In route to Rico's, Gojo and Geito are attacked by members of Q with the latter saving Rico.
00:07:13
Speaker
Meanwhile, due to not having the strength to fight the Time Vessel Association hires someone to kill Riko, Toji Zenin now goes by his wife's maiden name, Fushiguro. So that is another character that we have been hearing a lot about within the Zenin clan and someone who left and this is Megumi Fushiguro's father. So that's like
00:07:36
Speaker
even more backstory. It's like what happened with him? Why did he leave? How did he leave? How did all that stuff break down? Like it's really cool how they're adding lore within their storytelling to just make us really intrigued with
00:07:48
Speaker
the people that are being introduced and just wanted to know more and more about them. So hopefully these, it's a lot to ask for for four episodes, but I hope the four episodes like really expand on that. And if not, I'd be amazed if the 18 episode stretch of what is being known as the Shibuya incident, manga, readers, I
00:08:11
Speaker
been told that you guys are excited. As usual, we try to keep everything anime stuff here. I've been tempted to read ahead because I just really want to know. But for the sake of the show and sake of this podcast, I want you guys to have my genuine responses. So we're sticking anime only. I'm really excited for this. There's been a lot of hype about this arc and I want to see what the hype is about. Let's see.
00:08:38
Speaker
I know I was going somewhere with that when I derailed and have no idea where it was now. I am excited for these characters. I'm excited for the storytelling. I'm excited for all this action. It's going to look so dope.
00:08:49
Speaker
I still can't stop thinking about the fight between Gojo and the chef looking dude. Just how well the choreography and how smooth the fight scene and everything was in that. So being able to see that with more characters. They did such a fantastic job with season one. I don't see them digressing from this. But in regards to the animation, this is where

Animation Styles and Viewing Experience

00:09:16
Speaker
I'm starting to not know how I feel about Mappa because season one was very consistent season two is very consistent in their artwork and fluid motions and this and that but like they did a lot it looked like it was switching animation styles every scene and sometimes multiple times within the scene and I try not to get too lost on that like sometimes if it's just something
00:09:42
Speaker
kind of like relevant to what's going on so it's like a lot of time when there's an insane action scene they kind of like killed the shading a little bit just to focus on the movements but like they they did a lot of different things in this one episode and I kind of hope that this isn't something that they consistently do going forward like stick with how they had it in season one because that clean design is honestly what I'm here for and every now and then like for a set design if you want to go a little crazy that's that's fine but I think map is doing a little
00:10:13
Speaker
too much and it's starting to make me a little dizzy. So I'm hoping this was just an episode one thing and they don't get too carried away. I'm curious to hear your guys' thoughts on that. Did you like it? Did you not like it? Was it too much? Did you not even notice it? Because sometimes that could be important too. Like I said, I like to get lost in the storytelling. But this episode, that definitely like kind of pulled me out of it a little bit.
00:10:41
Speaker
I'm not sure if I have too much to add to this. There's just a lot of anticipation, a lot of excitement. Episodes are dropping every Thursday and all these animes decided to come out like roughly around the same time, which honestly, I'm not complaining.
00:10:56
Speaker
Outside of anime, we have Secret of Asian on Wednesdays, then Jujutsu Kaisen on Thursday, then Roni Kenshin on Friday, and then Bleach Thousand Years of Blood War on Saturday. So it's like, we are not short of any content.

Upcoming Content and Listener Engagement

00:11:10
Speaker
The new Superman series, I think that drops on weekends as well. It's on Adult Swim on one night and then hits Max, just Max, not HBO Max, just Max.
00:11:21
Speaker
the next day and there's been a lot of good reviews for the first episode I'm gonna go check it out hopefully tonight if not tomorrow but
00:11:32
Speaker
I've been hearing good things, little snippets I've seen, it looks really good, so it's just exciting to have this much animated content, so I'd love to hear what you guys are excited about, whether it is just a show, whether it is stuff outside of anime, and you know, just kind of like hearing from you guys, even the live action stuff, like what are you guys into, what are you guys excited to listen to? So things like the
00:11:57
Speaker
the announcement of like how these episodes are breaking effort to do two guys and we try to throw news like that on uh this week on animation episodes we don't do it every week but when we do have enough of a build up we try to hit all these stories we try to hit your feedback and we try to tell you guys the things that we're excited about so please join us there please keep listening to the episodes leave those five star reviews when you can because it definitely helps us out leave a review
00:12:21
Speaker
And just keep telling us how much you love us because we never get tired of hearing it. So with that, be sure to tune in next time. That's T-W-O-N-I-N. And as always, stay well.
