kayak: That's quite a race.
Chris: Welcome back to the Mythic Giraffe Podcast. I'm Chris.
kayak: And I'm a bemused Ron.
Chris: ah ah So it works again.
kayak: So random.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I have an opening statement.
Chris: Uh oh.
kayak: It's an opening statement I've made before. I think movies. I think the movie industry is dead.
Chris: oh
kayak: I think it's currently on. the last bits of life support, but it's dead.
Chris: What? what has driven this nail in the coffin.
kayak: Look. Be honest.
Chris: yeah
kayak: besides the latest Spider -Man movie.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Did anybody care about a single movie that came out this year?
Chris: i There are people that care about the Odyssey. and Stuff.
kayak: i mean Sure.
Chris: But it's just...
kayak: I guess.
Chris: Maybe, yeah. I don't...
kayak: It doesn't feel like it made any impact at all.
Chris: know
Chris: No. wow
kayak: Like. Can you even remember that there was a Star Wars movie this year?
Chris: with Oh yeah, there was. I was like, wait, no there wasn't.
kayak: Mm -hmm.
Chris: Now see? Yeah. Yeah, I'll just prove your point with that one
kayak: I just feel like people are so...
kayak: burnt out. the the Because I talked to my friends about it. who I have a friend who goes and sees every Marvel movie still. And I'm like, it's just because. Do you like them?
kayak: or do you go because, oh, the new newest Marvel movie's out and I have to go look at it?
Chris: hu
kayak: And that's what it feels like. It's not like you care.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: you just Now you're invested in this thing and you have to keep going. Which is fine. It generates money for... Marvel I guess.
Chris: Does it though? I don't know what their return is on that.
kayak: I have no idea.
Chris: A movie.
kayak: I think. play side
Chris: and That's the other thing, though. Movie theaters are so expensive that... Ugh.
kayak: And they're so crappy.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: It is inverse. It is. except for maybe an airplane. It is the thing you spend the most money on for the worst experience.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, because I mean...
kayak: Airplane has got to be number one.
Chris: Yeah, the seats aren't super comfortable. it's it's either ah too quiet in some spots too loud in other spots
kayak: Sticky. On the floor.
Chris: You don't. Ah, God, yeah. you don't get to sit right you know where you want in the middle of the theater in the middle of the screen unless you know you Pick out your tickets early.
kayak: mm -hmm
kayak: Well, the...
Chris: come
kayak: The. bougie theater by us that used to be the bougie like you go in there all the seats are cracked
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And it's like...
Chris: Mm -hmm.
kayak: Why? Why would I give you money?
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: if you're not even willing to to invest that money back in your business to make the
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Seats comfortable.
Chris: Right.
kayak: oh This one's for the thing.
Chris: and popcorn is like the lowest of tier snack foods
kayak: It's... the bottom of the barrel. It's legitimately the cheapest thing that people pay. premium prices for. It costs nothing to make popcorn.
Chris: Bye.
kayak: It's a byproduct of real corn.
Chris: It just... Yeah. Yeah. and you're also You're sitting in a theater with a bunch of strangers, so... they're breathing. coughing
kayak: Donald Jones.
Chris: Crying, screaming. Oh, my God. ah
kayak: Talking.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: it's It's the worst experience that you pay.
Chris: Mm hmm. Yeah.
kayak: seemingly an enormous amount of money for.
Chris: Right. Yeah. And if you got a P in the middle of it, oh, guess what? You're just going to miss part of the movie.
kayak: Yeah. Yeah. Also true. And somehow. And yet somehow, I should say, and yet somehow... Would you go to rent these movies now? It's... ridiculously at of expensive.
kayak: it's
Chris: Yeah, what was it it wasn't too long ago
kayak: $22 or something to rent movies on Amazon now.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Thanks.
Chris: Well, I guess it like the newer ones.
kayak: That's crazy. Crazy.
Chris: Yeah, but usually on Amazon, like there was something. I can't remember what it was we were going to watch, but it was like rent. for twelve dollars buy for 15. i was like
kayak: Right.
Chris: I might as well buy it.
kayak: But even still, like...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: $12 to rent a movie that cost them... Probably nothing.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: you know
Chris: ah Yeah, I don't know how that works, though. They gotta, like... I dunno, buy licensing and stuff, don't they?
kayak: um yeah I mean, I guess, I assume, but...
Chris: Yeah, I usually just wait for it to come free
kayak: Right. Well, that's what I do now because I'm just too...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I'm too brown on the system.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: To care. End. Even movies that I sometimes feel like oh, I want to support that company like They did it. a ah new super troopers and i was like oh i should probably support those guys i like their comedy But I'm not paying.
Chris: Is that the broken lizard or whatever?
kayak: Yeah, broken lizard. I'm not paying. 60 bucks? It's probably 60 bucks to get the movies for just two people.
Chris: oh yeah once you fight yeah Yeah, because tickets are probably... Twenty...
kayak: Tickets are... 20 to 25.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Probably. Depending on the the showing.
Chris: Yeah. Right.
kayak: Then... God help if you get a soda.
Chris: Oh my gosh.
kayak: You know.
Chris: Yeah, that's it. which this is a site hinted to this that ties into this. Peace. charge you a convenience fee. for buying your tickets online.
kayak: Mm hmm.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Yeah. So the the thing that costs them the least amount of money, as in they don't have to employ an employee to deal with me.
Chris: Right.
kayak: I have to pay more money for.
Chris: Yeah. Yep.
kayak: That makes sense.
Chris: Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah, total sense, yeah.
kayak: Tell you, it's the thing you pay.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: The most money for the crappiest experience. besides besides airlines because boy
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Airlines suck.
Chris: Mm hmm. Yeah, mate. Yeah. Sarah was flying home last weekend. And she got stuck in Charlotte, which i I feel like Charlotte is the airport that everybody gets stuck in.
kayak: i've never been there
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. But it's... Yeah, she was like, yeah. Well, first flying. out. She flew out of Salisbury. And she was like, yeah, flight's delayed. I was like, oh, yeah? I was like, is there a problem with the plane? She was like, no, just no plane here.
Chris: What? Oh, that's... That's kind of a big deal.
kayak: And it is nice at Salisbury because you look out at the runway and be like... Well. There are no planes, therefore my plane is not here. You go to Philadelphia airport, you can't identify which your plane is.
Chris: Right. Yeah. Yeah, but yeah, then you get on the plane and then you've got to... jockey for position for putting your bag overhead and
kayak: It's terrible.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: When we went to Seattle... Oh. I was telling my wife, i'm like we're just going to take one bag. We were paying. Premium prices for first class tickets so that we can have.
Chris: Nice.
kayak: guaranteed which is this is crazy you have to pay first class prices to guarantee a slot in the overhead.
Chris: what
kayak: Because otherwise you get no, over there's no guarantee of overhead slot.
Chris: How did...
kayak: And it's like... that I was like, I don't care about checking our bags going there But on the way back, I don't want to have to wait. Fairbanks.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Right, so we're just gonna take one bag if it's never had and do that
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: make Make sacrifices in our life. it was easy for me
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Okay. you know. And it was like, it's awful that you have to go through this. And and everybody's banging your bags around trying to squeeze their extra.
Chris: ah
kayak: God damn it, people.
Chris: Yeah. yeah And the the things that people carry on with them.
kayak: I need... Two things. A Kindle? And or ah a long book. I usually take my candle because it's just...
Chris: yeah Yeah.
kayak: you know, space efficient.
Chris: Right.
kayak: And... A pair of headphones on my phone. That's it
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: I don't need a special neck pillow.
Chris: oh yeah these people they have their neck pillow and then they're bringing out their crochet and
kayak: Yeah. No.
Chris: a
kayak: Go to sleep.
Chris: yeah Yeah.
kayak: It's bonkers.
Chris: well i've talked to some people who They will take their carry on. but they contact wherever they're staying. and a FedEx.
kayak: i heard Yeah, I've heard that too.
Chris: Third. their luggage.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: yeah So.
kayak: Which just shows you how bad the airlines are.
Chris: Oh yeah. Yeah.
kayak: You don't trust them. Oh, my brother. When we were coming back from Seattle. They lost their bags.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: They had a... they had a service that took their bags from the ship to the to the airport and somewhere between those two agencies They lost their bags.
Chris: yeah How does that happen in this day and age?
kayak: How does it happen when Amazon can send me... Three packages within 25 minutes.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: but An airline can't keep track of a bag with a... a tag on it
Chris: Yeah. yeah That has to be scanned at every step it goes.
kayak: Uh huh. Yeah.
Chris: yeah
kayak: it's Bonkers. Yeah.
Chris: m
kayak: I mean... I do remember the time when Salisbury airport, they called the fire department and I had to like pull all the people's bags off their plane. While they were still on the plane. And I was like.
Chris: Wait, you had to pull the bags?
kayak: Oh I've never told this story?
Chris: No!
kayak: Oh, so yeah we get called to the airport. This is after they got the fire department.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: So the fire department called for us to come out and respond.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And for some whatever they said. Only got... Engine 1. They didn't get anybody else. So I don't remember what how it happened that we got dispatched. Maybe they called the AC phone. I can't remember.
Chris: i'm sure it was nothing on our dispatch center
kayak: Yeah. So we get out there. And... They're like. The pilot. Accidentally, Paul, we think... accidentally pulled the extinguishing system in the luggage.
kayak: part of the plane. I said, okay.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: What do you want me to do?
Chris: Great!
kayak: Well, can you... Go in there and you know make sure the environment's clear. so we can put workers in there. I'm like, all right what's in there? What's what's the exclusion?
Chris: yeah what Yeah, what's...
kayak: I don't I don't...
Chris: What's the dangerous thing that you might be going into?
kayak: Right, I don't. know what your plane is and they're like well we don't know i said well why don't you call the maintenance guy for this plane
Chris: yeah
kayak: Well, he's not here.
Chris: Yeah. Oh, it's all um it's all ball bearings now, Ron.
kayak: You're a It's all ball bearings. You're a company that has airports across the nation. I'm sure somebody is at work that works on this plane.
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: Call that guy.
Chris: um americaica Well, let me Google it real quick.
kayak: Do it. But when I got there... All the people are on the plane staring at me, pulling up in the engine. of this airplane and there's already the arf truck and i'm like can we get the people off the plane
Chris: oh
kayak: That's probably not the thing that makes them feel good
Chris: Gosh. Right.
kayak: Right now. That's... Let's get them off the plane. Well, we're worried there's a hazardous material on the plane. Seems like a good reason to maybe get them off the plane.
Chris: Yeah.
Chris: Nick. Yeah. Folks, just stay in your house. Don't go in the basement. We think there's something deadly in the basement. Just don't go down there.
kayak: Well, then they would...
Chris: We're going to go check it out.
kayak: We...
Chris: Wait.
kayak: we we did we put meters in them playing everything We had to meet and this guy talk and I was like, all right, I guess.
Chris: yeah
kayak: it seems safe to me and then they said okay can you certify us to fly i said no
Chris: yeah
Chris: Can you certify?
kayak: said what are you talking about they're like well we need you to certify that it's safe to fly i said
Chris: Huh.
Chris: No.
kayak: I don't know dick about planes. What are you talking about?
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Could you imagine? The plane goes down.
Chris: Oh my...
kayak: Lieutenant Ron Wismer was the last person to certify it to fly.
Chris: Yeah, you're... Kicked back and...
kayak: I'm in my great Kleiner.
Chris: Station one. Yeah.
kayak: FAA cops show up, busting down the door. What did you do?
Chris: ah
kayak: I'm gonna join a hot dog! It was fine.
Chris: Dot 8!
kayak: sure was Crazy!
Chris: certified help.
kayak: Yeah, I was literally like you guys need to call your maintenance people. That's who works on this plane
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Not me.
Chris: Huh.
kayak: I don't work for the FAA. I don't know anything about the FAA.
Chris: Right.
kayak: I know that it's the FAA. That's it. Let's see.
Chris: yeah
kayak: And airplane go fly. Woo.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: That's it.
Chris: through some form of magic and physics i don't know which is more
kayak: Yeah. it was It was a crazy day. That was like the craziest one of the craziest calls I think I've ever been on.
Chris: oh my gosh
kayak: And the pilots kept looking at me. I'm like. Bud. This is so far out of what I do.
Chris: ah
kayak: I guess it just shows you how...
Chris: I can check your blood pressure.
kayak: Like, is your blood sugar good? I can check that. but i guess that just shows you how trusted the fire department is.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: But they were just like... well you're a firefighter i'm like Yeah?
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: What are we doing here?
Chris: ah and But you know, there are some knuckleheads out there like, yeah, sure. I'll sign off.
kayak: Yeah, 100%. 100%.
Chris: yeah Yeah.
kayak: Was it convenient for me?
Chris: yeah
kayak: Check. You're good. See you, buddy.
Chris: ah
kayak: bogers Well, then they were like.
Chris: ah
kayak: You're like the hazmat guy. I'm like, yeah, okay. Wait a second. this
Chris: But still.
kayak: but Not a thing.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: Don't work on airplanes.
Chris: Right. Yeah.
kayak: Barely.
Chris: If anything, they should have called our logistics guy.
kayak: Yeah, he's on airplanes every freaking day.
Chris: yeah but i'm say He could hook up his little... you know diagnostic computer.
Chris: Yeah. well i mean if this was a f -150 It's running a little rich, but I don't know.
Chris: ah
kayak: I...
Chris: yeah
kayak: I do remember that because I was like... I think. I mean I don't know. I would assume you need your working fire extinguishing system to work. Hello. Not my thing.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Well, that's the same thing happened at the baseball stadium. That's why the guy at the baseball stadium still hates me.
Chris: but
kayak: They had a They have a sprinkler system that runs under the... First, peace. Bleachers.
Chris: but Okay.
kayak: And the system went down. And I said, well do you have a game tonight yeah we have a game in like an hour i said
Chris: No you don't.
kayak: but You might not be having a game in an hour and they're like you can't tell us we can't have a game in an hour. I said, Yeah. Yeah, again.
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: And I said. I'm not the one who told you you have to have the sprinkler system. But I know that once they tell you you have to have this ringer system, it needs to be working.
Chris: Right.
kayak: And he was like. you you we We'll just... if if there's a fire people will they'll go out to the field i said that That's not a...
Chris: That's not how it works.
kayak: It's not how it works, bud I said Lieutenant Ron Wismer is not going to be the one that signed off on. Game goes on. fire department watches as 80 people die that's not that's not how this goes
Chris: Yeah. Right.
kayak: To this day, he hates me.
Chris: Yeah. Huh.
kayak: Hates me.
Chris: Wow.
kayak: Cuz I think he just thought I was gonna be like Cool. Go ahead.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Peace out.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: He was like, no, we we have to have a game. I said. You have an hour to fix the sprinkler system.
Chris: no Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: That's what ah That's what I would advise you.
Chris: Yeah. Call the Sprinkler Company.
kayak: You better call them and tell them to come out here quick.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: But he really thought I was gonna be like no you're good
Chris: I don't understand people
kayak: Well... There's two things at play That's what's down there. You got the good old boy.
Chris: a
kayak: Come on, man.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: No. That's definitely a thing.
Chris: Oh yeah.
kayak: Okay.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And then I think... Just so many people have no integrity. to stand up and say no.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Because if you look if you watch
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: or read about disasters.
Chris: Mm hmm.
kayak: So many of them is because nobody would stand up and say. Wait a second.
Chris: Exactly.
kayak: What are we doing here?
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah, time out. Let's... think about this
kayak: And I think about that all the time on my job.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: Like, I'm not going to be the one to be like, yeah, it's cool.
Chris: Yeah. Right.
kayak: Good. You know, I explain to people that I don't design sprinkler systems. I don't even know the fire code. I just know that if it's there it has to work.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: That's it. End of story. Well, the fire marshal says...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: i well Call him.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I'm sure her answer at 3 o 'clock in the morning.
Chris: Yeah, very happily.
kayak: Yeah, we went to the... Infamous nursing home.
Chris: um
kayak: in our first do. and their shrinker system wasn't working and they were like, well, what are we going to do? I said, you're going to do Firewatch. And it's all five buildings.
Chris: e
kayak: And they're like, what? I said. You're going to walk this building every 15 minutes.
Chris: Eh?
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: every part of this building, every 15 minutes. Until it works.
Chris: Mm hmm.
kayak: What?
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: It'll be fine. i said No.
Chris: No. No.
kayak: No, it won't.
Chris: no yeah Especially since they have people who cannot safely self -extricate.
kayak: Yeah. You have old people in this building who can't get out.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Oh, my. gosh that's probably what they did they just strapped a bunch of gopros to and opened up the compass unit.
kayak: we We have a theory about that facility. They just it just came out this morning and I thought it was brilliant. I think they have A vacuum tube system?
Chris: Mmm.
kayak: And any patient anywhere in the complex gets immediately shipped to the compass system. compass unit and then they call that one and said they're at the compass unit because
Chris: ah Yeah.
kayak: It feels like we've taken out all of the patients in the complex unit by factors of 12.
Chris: Have you started marking their ears?
kayak: Oh, we should tattoo them.
Chris: That was like a tag. but
kayak: Oh, well. Amen.
Chris: You're good.
kayak: Okay, I got you this week. Yeah.
Chris: Yeah. Yes. You go there.
kayak: It's crazy.
Chris: That one's got a tag.
kayak: Yeah, that was gonna tag they've been marked It's like a goose.
Chris: yeah
kayak: You got to call DNR now.
Chris: yes ah are he was at dnr shows up what are we supposed to do the fire department said you're in charge
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Ugh.
kayak: Sounds good to me.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Let those guys just figure it out.
Chris: Yeah.
Chris: ah What are you doing to his ear? Oh, I'm just checking his trigger.
kayak: it's like It's a Dexcom. It's a new kind of Dexcom we got. Go Conk.
Chris: ah
kayak: This one's got eight tags on them.
Chris: ah Donnie accidentally gets tagged.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, I think movies. but
Chris: So what's the last movie you rented?
kayak: Oh. Well, technically, the last movie I rented was Clerks.
Chris: um
kayak: Because the kids on my shift had never seen Clerks.
Chris: So... Okay.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: The last new movie I rented?
kayak: I think the last movie I saw in the theaters was... The first of the dunes.
Chris: m
kayak: I couldn't tell you last new movie I rented.
Chris: ah Yeah. Yeah, I don't know when the last one was. We did watch the Masters of the Universe movie the other night.
kayak: Was it good?
Chris: It wasn't bad.
kayak: That's fun.
Chris: Peace. dumb, campy... fun. i would Again. I'm glad I didn't go to the theaters to see it, but.
kayak: Great.
Chris: I had fun.
kayak: I think that's still the problem with movies is... Half of them are not worth it.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, that's a big thing.
kayak: Probably even more than that.
Chris: Yeah. And you can't trust reviews.
kayak: No.
Chris: So.
kayak: Go on.
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: Everybody's. Review is bought.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: i that Yeah.
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: but I would say...
kayak: The last three movies and... ah The last three movies I saw were... The... First the dunes Wasn't very good. The...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: ah Napoleon movie, the Ridley Scott Napoleon movie, which is...
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: Really bad.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And then maybe Star Wars.
Chris: ah
kayak: That might be the last movie I've seen in theater.
Chris: ah Sure. Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: None of them were worth it.
Chris: Yeah. yet Yeah, my wife, she loves going to the movies. I just... Don't.
kayak: What's weird is we're the generation, right? Where?
Chris: That's what our parents would do. They would drop us off here. Here's 10 bucks. Go see a movie and wander around the mall.
kayak: Mm hmm.
Chris: We'll pick you up in four hours.
kayak: yeah yeah You know what? It's weird. the thats I say all this. but the last movies I've actually seen. are all older movies.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Because we had that charity that's, I think, supposedly running again.
Chris: Oh. Yeah.
kayak: We're seeing old movies. And it was fun. But I already knew what the movie was.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: So I'm... Like yeah, I'm gonna go watch smoking the band in the movie theater cool
Chris: Right.
kayak: I know I'm already going to enjoy it.
Chris: Yeah Yeah.
kayak: you know But...
kayak: Other than that, I don't know what I'm going to spend. Real money on movies.
Chris: Right. Can you imagine if they did some of the stuff they used to do, like Clue, where there were three different endings?
kayak: Yeah, people lose their mind.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: What? And like now. It just feels like if a movie doesn't make a billion dollars, then the movie theater is not interested in it.
Chris: Well, yeah, it's because people are paid out the wazoo, so...
kayak: Sure, but if you don't...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: You're not going to see those good movies anymore. A clue would never get made now.
Chris: Oh yeah, no. No. No. Well, unless it's like something... Straight to... amazon or netflix or something and even then it's kind of hit and miss
kayak: sure
kayak: but it wouldn't be made as a theatrical release.
Chris: Yeah. No. Wow. That's it.
kayak: All right.
Chris: messaging with a couple folks this morning and you know about the Blade Runner 2099. 2049 was such a bad movie. I was like, it wasn't a bad movie.
kayak: It was not a good, but it was a good movie.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: It wasn't. I don't think it well received.
Chris: Right. Yeah.
kayak: Didn't make enough money is what I would say.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. I was like, okay, and this is 50 years. past it so yeah let's let's see
kayak: It's a... It's also a weird series It's very niche
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I feel like...
Chris: keep The thing is, these guys. and get they like you know cyberpunk So I would think they would like it. So.
kayak: Like I love Blade Runner and I really actually enjoyed.
Chris: Um.
kayak: But... The 2029 version. I thought they were both good. But.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I would say it's a hard series to sell to people Like I would never be like Let's watch Blade Runner with somebody who's never seen it.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, I guess so.
kayak: It's a weird movie.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: And you'd be like, whoa. Is there a book? you'd be like Sort of.
Chris: Even weirder.
kayak: I want to know more.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Yeah, that's kind of the problem.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: what ah How do you answer these questions?
Chris: You don't.
kayak: I don't doubt?
Chris: Here's my friend Google and YouTube.
kayak: You're going to watch.
Chris: Here's some theories.
kayak: You watch a bunch of people talk about theories about it, but...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
kayak: Well that was a side tangent. i can move off topic
Chris: Sure, topic one.
kayak: sort of ah So this is a weird random topic.
Chris: yes
kayak: That I just... It came out of the the other day. So... One of my favorite movies, now that we're talking about movies. of all time. is the disney Disney King Arthur movie.
Chris: Yes.
kayak: It's one of the greatest animated movies.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, sword in the stone.
kayak: Sword and Stone, it's one of the greatest.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: anime movies ever made. I i would... All right. and it's not very popular i don't think
Chris: And that's because people are dumb.
kayak: I think it's because... Well, they call it the Silver Age, right? of Disney.
Chris: Oh yeah.
kayak: And... It's R? generation because i don't know what movie That's a good question. When did that movie come out?
Chris: Oh, they have come out in the 60s. in it.
kayak: I don't know. I'm sure it didn't come out in my house. Lifetime.
Chris: yeah
kayak: this Sword. 1953.
Chris: Uh, 1960. Yeah, 63.
kayak: Yeah. But it's such a good movie. Anyways. with The greatest part of that movie is which part?
Chris: The Wizard Battle.
kayak: No. it's this like That's the second greatest part. That's the best. Part of the movie, but the part of the movie that you want to think about the most And it would be a good question for this topic. Podcast would be.
Chris: The squirrel love.
kayak: Bingo -ish.
Chris: e
kayak: when he turns it all the animals for you know, education.
Chris: Yeah. Right. Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: So the question becomes...
Chris: oh

Chris: Yeah.
kayak: animal body.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Gotta watch out for orcas.
Chris: Well, I'm not I'm not talking like a... uh what you call it a sea otter i'm talking about just a river otter
kayak: Oh, he's going to be a river otter. Okay.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, don't have to worry about it. And not like over in like... egypt or something where you gotta worry about like crocodiles and stuff just
kayak: Now you're going to be like a regular otter. You're going to be like one of the Amazonian otters. It's like giant.
Chris: No. Yeah, because they see, then the Amazon you've got to worry about. crocodiles and piranhas and

kayak: They got little people hands.
Chris: Yeah. Not Jimothy, but...
kayak: What?
Chris: You've never heard of Jimothy the raccoon?

Chris: But yeah, they can, yeah. Take a hit.
kayak: I don't think they can, I think they're just so fast that they can't be hit. Apparently cats are like that too. I saw a video of like a cat staring down a cobra.
Chris: Really?
kayak: Like, just cats are... able to kill cobras because they're so quick
Chris: Interesting.

Chris: can you imagine that like he takes a girl on a date or something she's like oh let's bring the you know oh you know
kayak: That kid's like...
kayak: Get her bear spray.
Chris: Yeah, well yeah We can take this to go. No, we can't. They can smell it.

Chris: yeah
kayak: So 12 feet
Chris: yeah bigin
kayak: This is a big one.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah. and yeah definitely not an insect
kayak: now what's the point of losing like you live for like
Chris: there
kayak: Three minutes, and then you know all you're doing is annoying me
Chris: There are some insects that are cool, like praying mantis.
kayak: and Unless you're the male praying mantis.
Chris: Oh yeah.

Chris: Yeah, they're crazy looking.
Chris: yeah
kayak: Hamels. My eggs.
Chris: It's just them and it could...
kayak: Oh, all monotremes.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah, but there's only like three monotremes.
kayak: Well, there's the short -beaked echidna, the platypus, the eastern long -beaked echidna. the Attenborough's Long Beach Echidna and the Western Long Beach Echidna. Hmm.
Chris: Yeah. Key characteristics there, Egg Lang. They have no nipples.
kayak: I've got notes.
Chris: Female monotremes do not have teats, instead they secrete milk through special patches or pores on their skin.
kayak: Weird.
Chris: No teeth. Um... Oh. They have a cloaca. Much like a reptile. A single rear opening used for waste and reproduction.
Chris: And they have electroreception.
kayak: Well, evolution's kind of bullshit, right?
Chris: Yeah, yeah, it's gotta be.
kayak: that
Chris: Oh, and male platypus. platypi have venomous ankle spurs
kayak: They do have venomous. Spurs, yeah.
Chris: god It's crazy.
kayak: Yeah. ah The more I like. Listen to scientists explain, like... long -term evolution i'm like this is all made up Everything you said. I... ah Believe in evolution.
kayak: in my heart of hearts. But man it feels like bullshit.
Chris: Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah. Right. Yeah, you see some of these things, you're like, how? How how how have you made it this far?
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: How'd you get a beak? Weird freak.
Chris: Yeah. yeah that's Crazy.
kayak: Doesn't make any sense.
Chris: and yeah Yeah, and what – oh, just because the males have spurs? Huh? Hmm. That's got to be something like... it's from another planet or a dimension or something that somehow it got gated over here and it just
kayak: Man.
Chris: Kept on going.
kayak: ah Those babies are pretty cute though.
Chris: Oh yeah.
kayak: Hmm.
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: Fuckin'...

kayak: No, the ossuary. You know what it's called?
Chris: Oh yeah. Yeah. There's the, but there's also, Oh, the shoe bill. or something like that stone
kayak: Cassowary.
Chris: Yeah. But the way there's also the stone bill or shoe bill or something. When it clacks, it it like roars. It is terrifying. So Castle Warriors. It's like as close as you want to get to a dinosaur.
kayak: I don't want to get anywhere close to a dinosaur, honestly.
Chris: i ah Yeah. Yeah. well since we uh both used the internet just then to uh figure things out uh my topic was uh Has the internet made us idiots?
kayak: Yes.
Chris: Okay.
kayak: thanks ah Full on stop, fullontop yes.
Chris: m
kayak: I thought... man I thought...
Chris: yeah
kayak: In my heart of hearts, it was going to make us smarter.
Chris: yeah
kayak: It... exposed us to our greatest weakness, I think.
Chris: Yet that we'll believe anything?
kayak: Because a great... That is a weakness, but that's not our greatestziest our greatest weakness. The greatest weakness about the internet is the laziness.
Chris: Oh yeah.
kayak: Oh, well I saw this. here therefore i don't have to do any more research it's done
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And that is the...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: scary, terrifying part of the internet.
Chris: Mm -hmm
kayak: slash AI, slash all of this stuff.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, because there's those memes, but it's true. like you know Yeah. Kids and nowadays are like, pfft. There is no way that you wrote a 10 -page paper.
Chris: on your own. in a library Take care. Yeah, I did. and I took handwritten notes and then I typed it.
kayak: Right. I had to read a book.
Chris: and cross -reference
kayak: And then read another book.
Chris: to make sure the first book was right.
kayak: to Right. I had to read sources and check my sources. Yeah, that was a thing.
Chris: Gosh.
kayak: And man, the internet has...
Chris: gosh
kayak: And I'm
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: slightly guilty of myself because Things that I'm...
Chris: yeah
kayak: peripherally. interested in.
Chris: Mm hmm.
kayak: I won't. do more research than just like oh i'll look at the wikipedia page and
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Sometimes I'll check a source on my Wikipedia page, but usually I don't.
Chris: Right. Yeah.
kayak: Um... But usually it's not a thing. really into it's more like oh Who are the sons of William the Conqueror? Let me just...
Chris: Yeah, something like that.
kayak: Welcome. Right. But. Yeah, it's, uh...
Chris: okay Yeah. Which you could totally throw that ah algorithm off. you could make your own
kayak: Oh.
Chris: answer to that and just set up a bot that like you know clicks it or selects it or whatever all the time so it gets pushed higher and higher
kayak: 100%. Adieu. You could change.
Chris: and
kayak: All of. human knowledge with just that stuff that's the scary part of ai right like like people can use this to just
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: Erase information.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: End.
Chris: Yes.
kayak: Yes. Kids. Like I saw the thing where People are complaining because all these kids are using AI to write their papers in college. And I have a friend who's a professor in college and he's like, yeah, it's a real problem.
Chris: Right.
kayak: i'm like Yeah, but it's the problem that they're... just going through the motions of going to college.
Chris: Yeah, that's...
kayak: right because like
Chris: Well, yeah I think so, yeah.
kayak: They're not.
Chris: the whole college thing is so disenchanted.
kayak: Oh, well it's become... i don't oh man i have to i might get fired for some of the things i say about college in a second but It's become such a scam.
Chris: Now.
kayak: that we've led ourselves to believe that doing online courses where you learn nothing counts for something. Right. like Peace.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: it's a scam. you know. You and I have both attended. traditional universities.
Chris: Correct.
kayak: Right, we have...
Chris: Yep.
kayak: We have both done that. and i see real And I've talked to my friend about it. I'm like, I saw real benefit in what I got out of that. It taught me how to think. Thought I'd do research.
kayak: All of those cool things I got out of it. But he didn't give me a job.
Chris: No.
kayak: It didn't make me better at my job. At all. Um, And I don't think the people that are clicking through these online courses are getting anything out of it other than. They did it.
kayak: Sorry.
Chris: no No, you're you're right.
kayak: People. can get out of it. If you put effort into it. You can get effort stuff out of it. But most of you are just like clicking through. I mean, I helped. a former deputy chief do his homework because he Didn't want to do it.
Chris: Well, yeah. Yeah.
kayak: So what benefit did he get out of that? that interaction. Nothing.
Chris: Oh, yeah. No, he was just checking the box.
kayak: We're just checking boxes. And that's where it becomes a problem.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: When we're just checking boxes, and that's become a lot of... Let's be very clear. The American experience is. just check the boxes. We got problems.
kayak: Education shouldn't be about checking boxes.
Chris: Mm -hmm.
kayak: Education should be about expanding who you are. and Learning new things.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Expanding your passion for things.
Chris: Right. Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: it's It's not.
Chris: Well, did you hear about the... ah History teacher. at Alchem State University in Mississippi. How he... tricked. tricked his students.
kayak: Is this the wipe?
Chris: Yeah, he white ink to put.
kayak: Lettering 1.
Chris: uh place the word madagascar somewhere in the response in a way that makes no sense 32 of 35 students managed to shoehorn a mention of the African Nile Nation into their essays, which was supposed to be about the Industrial Revolution.
Chris: It's just... Yeah.
kayak: Well in
Chris: Well, I mean... End. The... i got thinking about this the other day because i was listening to a podcast and They were talking about... One of their friends, they were going to split at Airbnb and it was like.
Chris: 1700 bucks. and they're like yeah i use chat gpt and it said we each need to pay 340 or whatever he's like That's math. Why did you use ChatGPT to do math?
kayak: You have a calculator on your phone, for God's sakes.
Chris: Right.
kayak: We have made that.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: It's easy.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: as as much As we grew up. You'll never have a calculator, so you'll have to learn this stuff.
Chris: Oh my gosh, yeah. Yeah.
kayak: And now they have a calculator and they can't even use that.
Chris: Hmm. Right.
kayak: Instead of teaching...
Chris: Yeah, because schools aren't teaching times tables.
kayak: to Right, instead of what? Or just teach them how to use calculators.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: teach Teach them.
Chris: Right.
kayak: with My wife and I.
Chris: Yeah, teach the tool that you have.
kayak: right My wife and I talk about it all the time. Well, not all the time, but... and were We don't have kids, so we have less stake in the whole situation. I think a lot of the stuff the problem in schools is they're not teaching practical shit anymore.
Chris: No, no, not at all.
kayak: Yeah. and Look, even when I went to college. 20 years ago. That's all. 25 years ago. um You had to take classes that...
kayak: you didn't care about.
Chris: Right.
kayak: Right, we... I'm sure it was saying for you you had to take some bullshit philosophy class you didn't care about And you just.
Chris: Yep. Exactly.
kayak: Check the, but which was. was my complaint about College of the Top. I'm in here.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: not doing the stuff that I'm passionate about.
Chris: Right.
kayak: Learning crap I don't care about. Check -in boxes. Now... It's just get the kid through the school. and be done with them.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And it's no bueno.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: I can't.
Chris: What's like there was. Good.
kayak: As I just say, I can't blame the kids.
Chris: um Yeah, but it's also, wait. Yeah, it's the teachers and it's also the parents.
kayak: Oh, it's 99 % the parents, 1 % teachers.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Right? 99%.
Chris: Yeah. There was some school, it's an elementary school, I think. um And they just raised holy hell because. or some of the parents notice that.
Chris: They... had to pay this extra money for this like workbook to go um to go along with this the school year or whatever. And the teacher, quote unquote, makes it every year.
Chris: Well, they were looking through it and there's like things that are misspelled. There's the map of the United States that has like none of the states right.
kayak: Nice.
Chris: It's like. kansas city kansas city or something and ill -innocuous and like
kayak: Oh my god.
Chris: yeah all this stuff and they chat gpt the or you know ai the entire workbook Yeah, and it's like wait we paid you To. give us this study reference that you just Faked?
Chris: So.
kayak: I... And this is my... I could probably get crucified. I have a friend who is a teacher. Good friend. Close friend. And I think about the teachers who made an impact on my life.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: and how much they seem to care about it.
Chris: Right.
kayak: And how much she does not care about it.
Chris: ah Yeah.
kayak: And I don't know if that's... burnout from the system and, you know, what... Because now, like... I feel like and this is just again outside looking in. The teachers and I was... what can we do the system.
kayak: Like if you were a history teacher, that's because you were really passionate about being a history teacher. And that's all you did.
Chris: Right.
kayak: You taught a through history until you were like, I'm done.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I'm retiring.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Right.
Chris: Yeah, until you became history.
kayak: yeah Right, so you begin. She's like, I get bounced around. I get moved schools.
Chris: Yeah, that's...
kayak: I don't.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: you know I'm not teaching the same thing I wanted to teach. So why would she be passionate about it? Because...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: It's not what she's passionate about teaching.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: you know And it's such a hard.
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: Job now?
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that'd be like my daughter who... is going to college for music education if she got a job and they're like cool tomorrow you're teaching chemistry
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: ah
kayak: Well...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: You know... Deputy Chief. We're getting to the point where we're facing crises where people...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: We're going to be positions and they're not passionate about those positions.
Chris: no
kayak: Right, so what do you do? You move them around.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: You know, you put people in positions that you know they're not. as good at.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, now I get that.
kayak: you know That's what the the schools are facing.
Chris: Yeah. Well, yeah Yeah. because they don't have people knocking down the doors to be teachers.
kayak: Man, why would you want to be a teacher these days?
Chris: Alright. Yeah.
kayak: What are you paying?
Chris: Yeah, I think what fixes that is robots.
kayak: Good. Clearly.
kayak: Clearly robots fix the problem. Well, but but
kayak: I've always had this weird... theory about education. That. Bye about. Seventh grade. you know if you want to go to college or not.
Chris: Yeah, you should.
kayak: Right.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Like you're...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: You're... You've developed. the Self. motivation to... Because I feel like I learned a lot more. outside of school than I ever learned in school.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Right. And if you're not one of those people, then you're not really going to do well in the academic environment.
Chris: Right.
kayak: So why does the system set up? that you're going to be taught the same way the kid who's going to college is set up.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Right. I think the system is. Bonkers broken.
Chris: yeah Yeah. in a lot of different ways. and i mean well It. Like high school has changed so much. I mean. I mean my senior year. I think. I think I only needed English to graduate or whatever.
Chris: But like I had to take other classes just to fill the day out.
kayak: Sure, yeah
Chris: Um. but My... Well, my youngest, who is a junior. Thanks. Two classes in the morning. at the high school oh my gosh there's trouble afoot And then...
kayak: Here's our attack.
Chris: Um, She goes to Warwick for the rest of the day.
kayak: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's... Well, and like... I hear... Again, I'm around a lot of parents. you know how They only care if their kid gets into the vote deck anymore because...
kayak: Who cares about high school anymore? Amen.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: you know and which is a very different than it was when we were in school.
Chris: Right.
kayak: Like... I'm not proud of this, but we kind of all look down on the kids who are vo -tech.
Chris: Oh yeah.
kayak: You know. ah You know, us honors kids nerds, we're all like, oh, you're not going to tackle? Are you learning a stupid trade?
Chris: Yeah. Right. what That's like when well when I was in... Was it? was it middle school or freshman year or whatever, when, you know, you Did the... You got to try the Votek classes.
Chris: I came home and I...
kayak: So we didn't have that.
Chris: and i was like yeah i think i would want to go to vo -tech you know for either construction or mechanics or something and i was told you're too smart for that don't do that
kayak: Straight. Great.
Chris: Okay.
kayak: And now you look back and you're like, man, if I had just been a welder for like the last 25 years. I'd be living in a mansion right now.
Chris: yeah
kayak: You know.
Chris: Yeah!
kayak: Well, it's... it's We are such a weird... spot because our parents had a Roadmap.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Right? Like... My grandparents fought in the wars. They came out and they were like, okay, we're gonna get either going to get educations or we're going to start businesses. Our kids are going to go to college. They're going to get jobs. as bankers or whatever.
kayak: you know it's It's a... Guaranteed step. so then we
Chris: Right. Yeah.
kayak: We grew up in this world of, okay, well you have to go to college because that's the system.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And it. Didn't work.
Chris: Right. Yeah.
kayak: you know. I was telling somebody.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, go to college and all will be well with the rest of your career.
kayak: Yeah. Yeah, I mean My friend who's an academic, I think, who's... ah he's a history professor at a pretty major university and I was like I was telling him I said, you know, I have a degree.
kayak: from a state university in history, and it's worth nothing. He's like, yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I said, that's a problem.
Chris: Mm hmm. Yeah. Yeah. yeah because yeah we were told yeah this is your golden ticket you'll be able to write your you know do whatever you want
kayak: I can...
kayak: Right. You can get whatever job you ever dream because you have a degree. No.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I cannot.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: He's like, well, yeah, if you want to get a job in history, you got to get a master's and then a doctorate. I said.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: No.
Chris: Yeah. Ah.
kayak: That wasn't the deal I was promised.
Chris: Right, yeah. Up there. That's their time down here. This is our time
kayak: I heard that, yeah. and it's like so i don't want to blame the kids Because like they're a product of their environment.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And I think our generation who are now raising these kids.
Chris: Great.
kayak: are so burnt out against the system that
Chris: Oh yeah.
kayak: Like...
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: We don't know what to do.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: You know... i I'm good. My cousin comes to me for advice. She's a millennial. She comes to me advice for advice. I'm like, I don't know what to tell you.
Chris: Right.
kayak: Who's in the military? I don't know.
Chris: Yes, yes.
kayak: like yeah
Chris: Huh.
kayak: Go be a firefighter. I don't know. that That's the only thing I can tell you
Chris: Yeah, yeah Yeah.
kayak: The end. my friend's kid who Are they zillennials now? Whatever they are.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: you know he's in high school And he's like, oh, you know, we really wanted to do this. I'm like that. That's not going to be a thing.
Chris: Right. Yeah.
kayak: What do you mean you want him to do this? Like. That job's gone, bruh.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: you You might as well be saying, hey, I want my kid to work on...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Horse harnesses.
Chris: ah Ah. Yeah. Well, I mean, that Yeah. Let's all hold. topic for a whole nother day but when people the more i've thought about it when people are like you know these damn millennials or like whatever they're lazy and this and that i'm like are they or do they just see things a different way than we do and we probably should think about things a little bit differently like priorities
kayak: yeah No, they're smarter than we are.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: They don't take our bullshit.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: But yeah. I totally have that. experience as a supervisor of millennials at work. like
Chris: Mm hmm.
kayak: They are not impressed with our bullshit and like
Chris: Mm -hmm
kayak: The stuff that we agree with, like... or we'd agree with it we don't we don't agree with it we bought into Oh.
Chris: Right. Hmm. Yeah.
kayak: I have to be loyal to the department. I have to be loyal to the company that because they'll reward me.
Chris: Mm hmm.
kayak: They don't buy into any of that shit because you know what? It's not true.
Chris: Yeah, they've seen that it isn't.
kayak: Right. You know, we... You and I are perfect examples right we we have Given our loyalty to a city that has shat on us for 20 plus years.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: They're not going to put up with that.
Chris: Right.
kayak: And when we say they're lazy. No. They're just not going to put up with the bullshit.
Chris: Right yeah.
kayak: you know ah And I. Think about... There we go. They're not wrong.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: No. They are as handy as...
kayak: An upside down plunger, because they have no ability to do anything.
Chris: a no -armed man. Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: But which is a problem.
Chris: Great. Yeah, it is.
kayak: You know.
Chris: that Yeah, definitely. But again... It's... it's a product of their environment
kayak: Oh, yeah, it's 100 % our fault.
Chris: Because... Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah, they were never told, you know. that There was. I was talking to somebody. There was... this class. one class at one high school in the county. And it was, you know, like real world 101.
Chris: And I was like, oh, so does everybody take this? I don't know. It's just some kids. I'm like, no, no, every kid should take this because it was like.
kayak: of me
Chris: This is what a checking account is. This is how you balance a check. but This is how you you know figure out your finances. This is how you change a tire. This is how you tie a tie.
kayak: Mm hmm.
Chris: You know, dumb stuff like that.
kayak: What's weird?
Chris: Like yesterday we... ah My daughter... My youngest had Homecoming. And I overheard one of the other young ladies when they were trying to put the boutonnieres. on the guys. Well, I watched a couple TikToks to how to do this.
kayak: yeah that That is the part that worries me the most. Is they're unwilling to figure anything out?
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: They have no curiosity because they're just like, oh, well I'll just go to the Internet and it'll show me how to do it. It's like.
Chris: Right.
kayak: Where I grew up. You had to figure it out. You know. it's it's
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Weirdly go back.
Chris: my uncle dropped a non -working chainsaw in front of me and said figure it out
kayak: What? Well, that's also the problem though, is. our parents generation were just like Eh. You'll figure it out.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: with no we had no instruction booklet So we did figure it out, which was great.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: or Some of us. Some of us didn't figure it at all and you know didn't make it through It was just.
Chris: right
kayak: Part of the deal. you know.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: and But now these kids, they they don't have any, because then we were like, well, we're not going to do that to this generation. We're going to teach them everything.
Chris: Great.
kayak: We gave them the internet.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And now they're like, they can't figure anything out.
Chris: Right.
kayak: you know. It's... it's it's it's a weird thing
Chris: Mm hmm.
kayak: The thing that drives me that's the most is they don't know how to get anywhere.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. yeah you tell them like directions they're like okay christopher columbus Yeah.
kayak: No, not even that. Like. like They'll say like, well, how do I get to the mall? You've been there a hundred times.
Chris: Yeah. Go North.
kayak: What do you mean? Like I. legitimately think if I took to the millennials from my shift and said okay i want you to not use your phone and get to dover delaware they would drive into the ocean.
Chris: Oh, my. Bye.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: No, one into the ocean, one into the bay.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I... Like I don't think they would be able to do it.
Chris: Ah. Yeah.
kayak: Like i I'll... I'll give you $100 if you meet me in Dover, Delaware. And I will give you your phones back.
Chris: Yeah. Right.
kayak: You have to get there.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: they couldn't do it
Chris: Yeah. Uhhh...
kayak: I legitimately think they couldn't do it.
Chris: Even when... If they just drove in our city. There are signs that say Dover this way.
kayak: This time. Bye. I know. I still think they couldn't do it
Chris: Ugh. yeah No, I agree. Oh gosh. gosh Ha. Yeah.
kayak: you know. God help if you're like, I need you to get to Wilmington and go to First Street.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Like they would never figure it out.
Chris: Yeah.
Chris: Huh. Yeah.
kayak: That is one thing that... day Like, if the GPS system goes down, they are screwed.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And I'm going to tell you folks. You're screwed if you call 911 and the GPS system's not working.
Chris: Oh my gosh, yes. Yeah.
kayak: They're 100 % relying on GPS. And we all are retiring.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: The ones who know the city.
Chris: Hmm.
kayak: We're all retiring. And if you live on something that's not 13 or 50, you're screwed.
Chris: god
Chris: Can you imagine that? Like, that happens. They're calling up all the retirees.
kayak: Yeah. Could you guys... Come in here. We don't know where Nice Place is, and there's a fire blazing.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Oh, fucks.
Chris: God. Can you imagine? that That'd be like us calling like Roger.
kayak: Right.
kayak: But they never had to learn.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: you know They never got pushed to learn things, so they just rely on GPS.
Chris: Yeah. Right.
kayak: They've had it their whole lives.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Whereas we always... Feel like. Oh, this shit can go away. Right.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: We're always thinking that this thing could go away. and
Chris: Right.
kayak: That's not how they think.
Chris: Yeah, it's like the... ah Like when the hospital... had their quote unquote power failure or whatever it was. And, you know, we're like scrambling. It's cool. pencil and paper we'll figure this out we've done this before
kayak: Right.
Chris: But... Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: they think they
Chris: Yeah, now.
kayak: They haven't, well. I like the day we had 150 calls in one shift and people are like well how do we where do we go i'm like We're just gonna... we're just going to go to the addresses
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Well, how do we know where to go? We need to know addresses.
Chris: Yeah, yeah
kayak: We...
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: We figured this out. We'll handle it. Good.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: When we're gone? That will be gone. We will be the last. people. Fu - My generation of firefighters, when they're gone from the department.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: We were the last ones who know where anything is.
Chris: Yeah. god i'm gonna put a map book in the museum
kayak: You should.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I think two things.
Chris: you think about it i mean we walk past it now and there's like you know the old box alarm tokens and everything. and like Look at that old stuff. They're going to be doing saying the same thing about us.
kayak: Oh yeah. Yeah. Oh, there was on a out a firehouse firefighter Reddit the other day that was like a... bailout kit and some guy was like can anybody identify this because nobody in my fire department knows what it is like That's a bailout kit from like...
kayak: the 2000s
Chris: Oh my gosh.
kayak: that's like What? Nobody in your whole fire department could figure something out from the 2000s? What the...
Chris: Mmm.
kayak: Hell. Then you think, oh, God. Oh no.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
kayak: I always said the thing that should have been in the museum was the ceiling fan from the basement of 16.
Chris: No, that should have been sent off to like. NASA to... research.
kayak: Yeah, build real rocket ships out of this thing
Chris: Yeah. I mean, when it... we first turned it on it was a little hit and miss but once it got going it didn't stop
kayak: Ever.
Chris: Easy way to.
kayak: That and the the air conditioner from the bunk room.
Chris: Oh yeah.
kayak: Not the air conditioner from the chief's office because that had an unfortunate accident.
Chris: No.
Chris: Oh, God.
kayak: I was. I was telling that story at work and they were like.
Chris: That one. Yeah.
kayak: What do you mean you had to take the air conditioner out? I said, yeah, we had to air conditioner out.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: I'm like, well, how would you do that? i'm like Well, better than I did it.
Chris: ah Because wasn't that one of the ones you had to like... run the wire through the sill and then rewire it. first.
kayak: No.
Chris: No.
kayak: No, I don't think so. I think we just had a...
Chris: Ah.
kayak: Grab it real quick.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And I didn't grab it as quick as I could have.
Chris: ah
kayak: I could have killed somebody that day.
Chris: yeah
kayak: like Legitimately, if someone was underneath that thing, it would they would have died.
Chris: Oh yeah, easily.
Chris: yeah No, not in Salisbury.
kayak: Moving back. That's all.
Chris: No, it's also where it would have been like something like it would have like cut their pinky toe off or something it would have been something stupid
kayak: That's fair. That's fair.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: wow
kayak: Yeah, we used to like replace the screens. I remember i came to work one day and they're like all right we're replacing screens on the on the station.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: And I'll click. all Alright. how do you do this? And they're like, Here you go. Figure it out. I'm like.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: Cool.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: If you did that to the kids I work with, they would.
kayak: I'm not sure they'd ever figure it out.
Chris: yeah Ugh, they just said they're crying.
kayak: Well first off, they'd have to find a window that opens in the Salisbury Fire Department.
Chris: Well, yeah.
kayak: You can't have any windows in our stations, for God's sakes.
Chris: Yes.
Chris: me so much
kayak: It's... right we have
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: One window in station one that you can open
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: One.
Chris: Everybody huddles around it.
kayak: Yeah. It's crazy.
Chris: Uh, yeah. Yeah.
kayak: Well, now we' now we're now we're really old, man.
Chris: Yeah.
kayak: We're just bitching about kids.
Chris: wow
kayak: Kids these days.
Chris: Kids. The screen doors. uh, Well folks, I hope you... Figure out what kind of animal you want to be. and Yeah, don't use the internet.
kayak: Just learn to do some things on your own.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, think of one task you could do and Learn how to do it.
kayak: Just... um Just... break things a couple times. That you'll figure out. Not to break them anymore.
Chris: Exactly.
kayak: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah. Ah. Take care, folks.
kayak: Peace, folks.
