Chris: ah Welcome back to the Mythic Giraffe Podcast. I'm Chris.
outofideas: I'm Ross.
Chris: Why? It worked for like three episodes. Why?
outofideas: Yeah, I don't know. i this
Chris: ah It's trying to break me. a yeah It doesn't take much at this point.
outofideas: That's true.
Chris: Yeah, evidently it's nice and dry up where you are. and ah Rain in.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: It's great down here.
Chris: Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah yeah.
outofideas: Like this.
Chris: Flooding, all kinds of fun stuff here.
outofideas: I don't know I really hope it didn't get to Denton because I gotta be in Denton tomorrow for a bike race.
Chris: No. it was all like... Seaford and South.
outofideas: Okay.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: because uh Yeah, it's an offer of bike racing.
Chris: Oh.
outofideas: Super rainy, that'd be bad.
Chris: I've seen some of these videos of like the... I guess it's the Red Bull. courses that they do through the woods and stuff.
outofideas: Oh yeah, those guys are nuts.
Chris: Oh my gosh, it's like a... Two inch wide.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: track that they're on.
outofideas: but Especially when they're on like the top of like mountains And they're like, oh, that's slightly wider than my tire, which is 38 millimeters.
Chris: Yeah.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: No thank you.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah, I'm not doing that.
Chris: Yeah, that's 3 .8 centimeters.
outofideas: Good job.
Chris: Yep.
outofideas: Good job, American.
Chris: ah
outofideas: So I have a small minor rant. Which...
Chris: Okay.
outofideas: has affected my life for the last month. so My wife and I... but you My wife and I have... Always complain. that our backyard is like It's... Full sun.
outofideas: so it's
Chris: h
outofideas: brutal to be out there.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: You can't ever release it out there. And then you get the mosquitoes. so like it's hard to fire bits. during the fall so we're like all right fine we're gonna break down we're gonna buy a gazebo
Chris: Okay.
outofideas: We have a We have a slate fire pit area. it's very nice not super nice but it's nice enough
Chris: Yeah. That's it. Sounds delightful.
outofideas: But. We were like, oh, we're going to put a... get one of these. Like post gazebo, so it's not like it's not gonna floor That's be important to this conversation in a second.
Chris: um
outofideas: So... you know We order a nice kit. build on our thing and we're out there measuring for a couple days like well you know maybe we go 12 by 12 you know So we're like, ah. 10 by 10. There's only two of us that's going to do everything we need.
outofideas: 10 by 10, which means what? What shape? is 10 by 10.
Chris: That's a rectangle
outofideas: What?
Chris: Actually no, a square. That's a square.
outofideas: it It's a square. Right? 10 by 10 means it should be the same width and length. so It arrives. We start. building the stupid thing.
outofideas: And about halfway through the build... Because you could we had to get to a point where. We needed people to help us hold it up, which was a big pain in the ass. Um, we realized It's not square.
outofideas: And we've built it.
Chris: ah
outofideas: They're facing the wrong way.
Chris: What do you mean it's not square?
outofideas: It's not square. In fact, halfway through the directions, it's like, and and then you should be working off the short side. And I said, there shouldn't. be a short ride. It's a square. It's a 10 by 10
Chris: Square.
outofideas: Kiss you, bub. It's a... What? Yes.
Chris: What?
outofideas: So.
Chris: so i mean Does the picture look like a square?
outofideas: I mean, yeah.
Chris: okay
outofideas: But boy, I can tell you when you get it all set up, when it's done. You can tell it's not square.
outofideas: So I... Yeah, I tried to have my my brother. was trapping my bike off today for this race tomorrow these i was like can you help me try to rotate this thing and we couldn't get it rotated Because it's heavy as hell.
outofideas: So yeah. but i And also... I don't know. what spider monkeys they think people are to build this thing. Because...
outofideas: Like you'd get... Halfway through instructions, be like, okay, now reach up. Ten and a half feet and Screw this bolt in with an allen key. It's like, put my hands don't read.
outofideas: What the?
Chris: ah yeah You have to have Doc Ock arms.
outofideas: yeah You have to have Doc Argos. There's a roof in the way. It's like, why didn't you make me do this before the roof was put on you? Maniacs? so it took me way too long to build it it's like we watched a video the guy's like well you know it'll take you about four hours it took us three weeks
Chris: Do you think that your wife was videoing this just to... Bye.
outofideas: No, because she was raging longer more than I was, probably.
Chris: Post. oh okay okay all right
outofideas: Yeah. Yeah.
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: So.
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: That was my adventure over the summer was building this gazebo. And it was been a pain in the butt. Well, at least we got it centered now, so it's better.
Chris: Okay.
outofideas: was We set it up and it was like, this is not square. it Reticulous.
Chris: Hmm. And that was the short side facing. The West? yeah
outofideas: ah
Chris: ah
outofideas: Now... I have the short sides facing the north, which is actually what I don't want.
Chris: m
outofideas: I want short sides facing the south. The West. It's annoying.
Chris: a
outofideas: Yeah. Yeah. Kiss.
Chris: I'm only halfway through the instructions. Well, now that you're working off the short side.
outofideas: ah A hundred percent. Because it... as we get to the You don't really notice it while you're putting it up.
Chris: ah
outofideas: until you get to like the roof braces
Chris: but yeah Hmm.
outofideas: Because the roof. the the four posts for the roof, they're all the same size.
Chris: oh
outofideas: But then all of a sudden you're like. You look at them and they're like. There's a... There's a fucking short side of this.
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: So 10 by 10 apparently doesn't mean 10 by 10.
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: in all.
Chris: So is it like 11 by or 12 by eight or something weird?
outofideas: I think it's like 11 bytes. 10. Or something weird. It's weird. Yeah. I've not measured it. because I'm just angry at it.
Chris: but yeah
outofideas: But it looks very nice.
Chris: Okay.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah, that's a stop.
outofideas: That's a step.
Chris: Yeah, I figured you're just going to put the, you know. Mr. Burns. dish that follows the sun in the backyard and just keeps it.
outofideas: Yeah. quite bad.
Chris: ah
outofideas: I don't have that kind of money.
outofideas: Just need a place that I can go out there and... not being direct sunlight. Because it's brutal back there.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And it also means that my grass has to be cut. Twice a week right now.
Chris: yeah Yeah, the grass has been ridiculous.
outofideas: It's it's almost September. I'm cutting my grass twice a week. I'm usually down to like once every other week at this point
Chris: Mm hmm.
outofideas: It's crazy
Chris: well i mean the good thing is weather's evening out there's no fluctuations everything's normal
outofideas: Ugh. Was that?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: What's going on?
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. yeah i mean salisbury who historically hasn't had major issues shouldn't have flooding today Again. And oh my gosh.
outofideas: Not after one.
Chris: emergency vehicle. I'm in an emergency vehicle with my lights on and my arrow board pointing to the road I want you to go on instead of around me into the puddle of death.
Chris: Do you A, take a right and go around me, or B, just drive straight through?
outofideas: I'm just gonna go straight through it. What would you know?
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Well I have.
Chris: Especially in your small Honda Civic.
outofideas: I have a concern. Because.
Chris: a
outofideas: our brand new rescue truck that we got as i'm being introduce introduced the vehicle the person introducing it says oh don't worry guys the air intake on this is really high so you can just drive us through high waters
Chris: Yeah.
Chris: What?
outofideas: We...
Chris: No.
outofideas: What? No.
Chris: No.
outofideas: this is not a flood response vehicle we're not taking our two million dollar rescue truck and driving it through
Chris: Huh.
outofideas: floodwaters.
Chris: ah
outofideas: It is not built for that. That is not what we're doing.
Chris: ah the
outofideas: It's probably a good idea for us to get pickup trucks built for that.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: you know, as things get better.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: for more flooding down there.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I... It's not good enough.
Chris: Fanboot. Let's just get a fan boot.
outofideas: This is going to be a horrible.
Chris: I mean we've got at least one person who's trained on it already.
outofideas: Yeah. Yeah.
Chris: ahhhhhh Uh huh. What's like the new rescue truck? I don't... I don't understand the manufacturer how they originally planned for people to check the fluids.
outofideas: I don't. i I went off about this rescue truck yesterday. i
Chris: I don't understand why it's like, oh, yeah, you would just slide this tray out, put somebody on it, slide them in. They would check the stuff. Then you take them back out. No.
outofideas: Insane. Insane. And then. they were complaining about the the ac in the back and i said
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: How did that get through the manufacturer?
Chris: a
outofideas: that That should be their job. Too good. and and and my assistant she was like what's my fault because i said The problem is that... Pierce. is allowing you people to make decisions that...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: That should not be a question. There should be no question.
Chris: Right. Hmm.
outofideas: It should be.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: AC works in the back. The radios have power in the back of this thing. by standard.
Chris: right Yeah.
outofideas: like There should be some engineer who should have been like... Are these guys sure they want it to have no heat and AC in the back of this vehicle?
Chris: he he Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah. All right, guys.
Chris: Well, I think part of it is is just... Not everything has to be super customized.
outofideas: Right, exactly. That is my... One of my biggest gripes with the fire service, there should be...
Chris: ha Yeah.
outofideas: you want to there's two rescue trucks you can buy you get a walk -in or a non -walk -in there's
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Three engines you could buy. There's a long body. a short city body or, you know. That's it.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: The customization is we'll put your name on it.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: and Because I was...
Chris: ah You know what? We'll we' paint it a different color.
outofideas: Sure. We'll pay whatever color you want. That's your customization.
Chris: ah Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah, it was. saying that in front of one of the younger sergeants this morning. and you know He's one of those people who's... Well, we like to just... You shouldn't be designing. every johnny comes up and says i've got the greatest design for an engine no you don't
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: It's the same freaking engine that everybody else got. who's just
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You just spent an extra. six months with engineering for no reason.
Chris: and $600 ,000.
outofideas: you get six hundred thousand just If it was... there are three engines that this company makes you buy one of the three you stick your stickers on it
Chris: Mhm.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: that's It's like the... crazy. I remember when we did the hazmat.
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: And. I didn't get brought in until the last. moment of that process.
Chris: well that makes sense
outofideas: Which makes tons of sense, right?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: But.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: And the the only conversation that I was involved in was the lighting. And I said, I don't. Why am I here?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And they were like, oh yeah
Chris: Like... Let's go blink, blink, cool.
outofideas: Right. And they were like, well, you have to understand that there's a Maryland exemption to the to the. I said, why is there a Maryland exemption to emergency vehicles lights? Whatever the nation says emergency vehicles light should be.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: That's what we use.
Chris: Right!
outofideas: Well, we like it this way. Shut up.
Chris: Ah.
outofideas: If DOT says this is what all emergency lights in the country are going to be.
Chris: Yeah. Hmm.
outofideas: Why is there a Maryland exemption to that?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Shut up your face.
Chris: Yeah, I don't... i don't get it.
outofideas: it's
Chris: Yeah. oh yeah look at this this puts out so many lumens and it blinks twice as fast as that one Who cares?
outofideas: Nuts.
outofideas: I remember this is. Going back 20... Five years now. The volunteer house I started at. They bought an ambulance. And they were... We were so, you know... so happy to customize the same ones End. We were able to do this with the lights. of oa They put the lights the flashing white lights at drivers.
outofideas: height in a car ah ah car so that they They got.
Chris: Yeah. That makes sense.
outofideas: so many complaints because they were blinding drivers on the road when they would pull up next to them at like intersections, the lights were blinding the drivers.
Chris: It was also how they did a community epilepsy test.
outofideas: Yeah.
outofideas: yeah Yeah, which is, that's, oh, that guy's got a seizure.
Chris: Huh.
outofideas: Stop him.
outofideas: but but That's my point.
Chris: ah
outofideas: That's my argument about this whole thing.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: It's like, you're not an engineer. You don't design fire trucks for a living.
Chris: Right.
outofideas: I don't go to the guy at Subaru and be like, can you change how this... this wheel well sets.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: That's... Stupid.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Every Tom, Dick, and Harry has an opinion about crap that they shouldn't be involved in.
Chris: right
outofideas: And... My chief is one of the ones who's... worse about it. Because he knows just enough to be dangerous. Well, we got this transmission. i i whenever whatever the expert at pierce says is the transmission for this truck That's what I want.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: That's all I care about.
Chris: Yeah. yeah It's like when you buy a vehicle. Okay. Are you going to tow things? Yes or no? yes okay well then you have these options of axle and these options of motors Which would you like combination wise?
outofideas: Right.
outofideas: Right.
Chris: I want this one, this one. Those don't go together. OK, well, I guess I'll take A and Z. Yep. There you go.
outofideas: Yeah. Do you want the tote packets or not?
Chris: Not, oh, we're we're going to well we'll configure it in a way that, no.
outofideas: Yeah, it's...
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: It's a nutso system.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: I also think the giant risk is a giant waste of money. But that's all. We're going to move on from that.
Chris: ah
outofideas: I just... I just. umm I'm blown away by... How nonchalantly we act on people's money. That's not our money. It's...
outofideas: Crazy. I just... Could have bought five ambulances. Remember when Hamilton's were like... $70 ,000.
Chris: Oh my gosh, yeah.
outofideas: What are they now?
Chris: ridiculous.
outofideas: 300?
Chris: Oh, probably four or five now.
outofideas: Oh my... God.
Chris: Yeah, because again, there's one company that's doing it all.
outofideas: yeah Yeah, that's true. We should just go back to... Cadillacs. We should all get outbacks and just put searchers in the back.
Chris: Well, no, the new rescue truck. That's what that slide out is. You put a cod in there.
outofideas: Oh, okay. That's good.
Chris: Oh my gosh.
outofideas: That would be...
Chris: Yeah. Can you imagine the...
outofideas: frightening.
Chris: claustrophobia.
outofideas: Don't worry, sir. We're gonna save you. You slide out this morgue tray, put a person on there, slide on back in, close the door.
Chris: Thanks.
Chris: See you in 10 minutes.
outofideas: but
Chris: okay
outofideas: Oh my god. That would be awful.
Chris: ah ah
outofideas: Yeah, the the moment they told me about that. that you know That's how it was going to go. like There is no... chance in the world that you wouldn't lock the person in there.
Chris: right
outofideas: Yeah. That is never going to happen.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And then I guarantee you.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: The next headline is. Fire department kills rookie because they fret forget he's in compartment A and go on a call.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Right.
Chris: Yeah, unfortunately, yeah. Yeah. Driving down the road. What's that knocking? i fuck Probably something in the tire.
outofideas: Yeah. ah
Chris: Uh...
outofideas: Who thought that was a good idea? was
Chris: ah
outofideas: Bonkers. Fuckers.
Chris: But this is also the same. company that the Cab tilt on the... passenger side. You can't see the cab tilt.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: That's like... How did... i I'm not the smartest man on earth, but... that's That doesn't. Yeah. That doesn't add up.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: Sigh.
outofideas: all right
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I actually don't know why we got away from And this is just... Me, but why don't we why did get we get away from automatic cab? locks Why is it back to manual bars?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Did that just seem like we're... We're risking things for no good reason?
Chris: ah Yeah, yeah.
outofideas: Just to me. I'm just done firing.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. wow
outofideas: it won't affect me i'll probably never ride that rescue truck
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: they were They were like, make sure you drive it because, you know. You gotta drive, I said. The chances of me driving that rescue truck are not nil. but pretty close to nil.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: oh
Chris: yeah I was like, do you want me to practice driving it to Atlantic?
outofideas: Right. Yeah.
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: Yeah, I drive with a brush truck
Chris: Mm -hmm.
outofideas: and sadly that's pretty much it every once in a while I make Megan drive the... the ambulance to the hospital and I get to run. Drive the fire truck like a big man.
Chris: and wo Meep, meep. Bye.
outofideas: Yeah. I... legitimately I We had some priority call and Emily's in the back, you know, the direction and she's like, I just need a driver.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: I said, all right, I'll drive. And we got to the hospital, and she's like, you really had fun driving to the hospital. I said, it was the greatest thing I've done. Probably two years. It was just driving there.
Chris: ah
outofideas: It was the hospital. Like a bat out of hell.
Chris: Ah.
outofideas: They don't get to do it anymore.
Chris: Yeah, yeah.
outofideas: Oops. That was...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Hitting the power call, living the life.
Chris: Yep.
outofideas: When the...
Chris: yep
outofideas: You know.
Chris: Hmm. Get there. or The stretcher's upside down. The paramedic's hanging from the bar.
outofideas: A hundred percent.
Chris: Ugh.
outofideas: She's like... I was like, railroad tracks! oh yeah
Chris: ah ah i say Did you see the pile of stuff they took off the old rescue?
outofideas: Oh yeah. I saw.
Chris: did you so Did you see the wooden Henley boards?
outofideas: No, I didn't see. We we still had one of the healing boards there.
Chris: Yeah, there were two of them.
outofideas: Oh my god.
Chris: Yeah. And. Ahem. How do you spell region?
outofideas: R E G I O N
Chris: Oh no, no, no. It's R -E -I -G -O -N.
outofideas: That's raining.
Chris: Both of them had Regan. Oh, no.
outofideas: Oh God.
Chris: I was like, oh gosh. And of course, but one of the younger guys on a shift. Quit. I wouldn't backboard. What was that? Back in the 70s, I said you shut your mouth.
outofideas: Well... The worst part. So... They... they put the new strap system on the The Stokes Basket at Station 2. And Emily's explaining to me. I said, oh, you mean spider straps. She's like, what?
outofideas: I said those are just spider straps. That's what... spider straps are.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Again, we pretend like we've invented something new and we just invented something we already had.
Chris: Oh yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Just... aerp a surplus cycle.
Chris: Oh yeah. Yeah. but it's Yeah, 10 years from now. people are going to reinvent the seller nozzles.
outofideas: Yeah. Backboards are my number two thing that pisses me off in the fire service.
Chris: well we don't really use them anymore so
outofideas: And the data says we should never use them and never should have used them at the first place.
Chris: Yeah. Ahem.
outofideas: And yet we still put them in our units and still put them on our protocols for reasons.
Chris: Okay. you Hmm. yeah
outofideas: We had a call. It was last year sometime. And the paramedic looked at me and said, we should we should put this guy on a backboard. I said.
Chris: why
outofideas: Why? Well, he's got a back injury
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: And the backboard does what for that? Because I know if I throw my back out, the thing that really makes me feel good is a hard plastic. board that has no clinical
Chris: Yeah. right
outofideas: proven
outofideas: anything that works for me.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: In fact, the only thing that has been clinically proven at Backboard is it makes patient outcomes. worse.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Ow.
Chris: It's okay if you're putting somebody on it for like 30 seconds to get them from point A to point B and then taking them off.
outofideas: If I have to move a patient... But even still, I usually if you i don't.
Chris: It reaves.
outofideas: Get a resleeve.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: But. if there are the weird situations where it's just easier to slide them on a backboard to move them Cool.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And get him the heck off that board.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Every time. It drives me.
Chris: Yeah, oh, yeah it's
outofideas: Bonkers.
Chris: Yeah. But remember, we used to everybody.
outofideas: Everyone.
Chris: Everybody. Oh what's that? You're in a... two mile an hour accident in the Acme parking lot.
outofideas: What?
Chris: Here's your backboard.
outofideas: What drives me? You and I are all of the same. Well, I mean, you're older than me. but We're of the same generation of fire and EMS.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: we spend So... many years. If you move this car... Every patient will die.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: If your hands don't hold this person's neck. Perfectly tight like the...
Chris: Yep.
outofideas: Fists of a vice.
Chris: Ugh.
outofideas: This patient will die.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And all of that. was based on Nothing. There was a
Chris: welcome
outofideas: There was no data. There was no. Clinical studies, it was all... Bullshit.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And we drilled it. so I mean, just think about... When you went to EMT class in the... Wow. I went early 2000s. I don't know if you went in the 90s or not.
Chris: Late 90s.
outofideas: Right. they they you are you are to be a rigid
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: block with your arms on the person's head grabbing them like a melon that you want to break
Chris: um Yeah. Yeah.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: And...
Chris: Yeah. yeah yeah to the point where if you have to sneeze or anything someone has to do that for you
outofideas: ted who
outofideas: Right. You're gonna kill them. Right. Right. You're going to kill this patient if you even...
Chris: ah
outofideas: flinch your your hands.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And it was all bullshit.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: It was...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: all. Bullshit.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I remember like, you know, practicing backboarding people where you don't move the hands until the last moment.
Chris: Mm hmm.
outofideas: And it was.
Chris: Yep.
outofideas: All crap.
Chris: Yep.
outofideas: And it drives me...
Chris: We got a log roll. i All right, the person at the head has to count.
outofideas: Right.
Chris: One, two, three, roll.
outofideas: Right.
Chris: One, two, three, back.
outofideas: Sleep. ah You're going to seesaw the motion up to the board.
Chris: Oh. Oh my gosh. yeah Yeah, you can't just move them up. You have to move them. I had a... up and over twice yeah oh my gosh
outofideas: And it was all bullshit. It was...
Chris: Down over up.
outofideas: It drives me. insane to think back on my career about how big a deal we made that and we would
Chris: ah yeah oh yeah
outofideas: And then we were just as guilty because we would drill it into the people we were training.
Chris: Oh yeah.
outofideas: You know.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: This is how you backboard someone. this is you
Chris: You remember when we took the skills weekend and they wanted us to put the scoop stretcher on a Henley board.
outofideas: Make sure it's... Yeah.
Chris: I was like, What?!
outofideas: I. and it's all it was all based off one dude in the 70s who's like i think these things might do something
Chris: ah
Chris: yeah Yeah. Yep.
outofideas: And that's it.
Chris: Yeah. Good old Jim Henley.
outofideas: Okay. ran It's. And like. Though. The backboard room in the ER was to be a...
Chris: ah
outofideas: giant and mess of plastic waste.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And he was all...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Focus. It drives me.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: a it's It's the number two thing that drives me nuts and in the fire service. Because at least we've finally done something about it.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: The number one thing is epi, and we still haven't done anything about it.
Chris: Yeah, I mean we've backed it down but yeah
outofideas: If I take one more class where a doctor stands up and says, epi is poison and you guys are killing patients with it. I don't know what I'm gonna do.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Because again...
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: No data.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: It's just... We think this thing might do something.
Chris: Mm hmm.
outofideas: do it Yeah, you give enough happy to a table, that table will dance.
Chris: Oh yeah.
outofideas: The table's not going to come alive afterwards.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: It's just going to dance for a little bit.
Chris: Yeah. maybe early on to increase the excitability.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: yeah But again, it's I'm talking like in the first five minutes.
outofideas: The...
outofideas: There is.
Chris: And we're not there in that time.
outofideas: Right. the the The only data I've ever seen is.
Chris: Ahem.
outofideas: Except for pediatrics.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You know, one dose to a pediatric early in the in arrest probably has effect. And if you're on a patient within like. Two minutes. and get that epi in which no one can do
Chris: yeah
Chris: Yeah. well that's why we're going to start putting pericardial epi in all the aeds
outofideas: You're right.
Chris: What's that?
outofideas: was
Chris: It'll be between the pads. So you put the pad on, put the pad on, hit the button, and it sets a plunger down. click on
outofideas: Well, there are... are
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: em at Departmental yeah EMS class last month. was some guy from Michigan saying, we're faster at giving epi than anybody else. We're definitely getting it within 10 minutes of patient contact.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: our patient uh incident No you're not.
Chris: No.
outofideas: You don't have teleporters.
Chris: No. Yeah.
outofideas: most of us don't
Chris: Or do they?
outofideas: Most of us don't get dispatched and on scene. And we're in a...
Chris: Mm hmm.
outofideas: We're in a tight urban area.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I need to put outside of that. You're going to be 15 minutes before you even think about giving a person an epi.
Chris: oh yeah Yeah.
outofideas: Good luck. What are you giving it, IN? Which... You're not getting an epi.
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: Five minutes. it's not happening
Chris: Oh, it's Bluetooth.
outofideas: Right.
Chris: through the 911 call.
outofideas: Right, right, right.
Chris: Mm hmm.
outofideas: right
Chris: it sets out a frequency that stimulates the kidneys to increase the adrenaline. Yeah.
outofideas: I actually heard what they're doing is They're dispatchers. tell the patient over the phone or the the call over the phone to give the patient an IV and then give epi over the phone.
Chris: Yeah. ah yeah
outofideas: Yeah, that'll fix it.
Chris: yeah yeah
outofideas: Hmm.
outofideas: Not so.
Chris: Mm -hmm
outofideas: Yeah, it just drives me.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: God bless you.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: What are you...
Chris: Well...
outofideas: Very good.
Chris: Topic one.
outofideas: Ready to move on to topic one?
Chris: Sure.
outofideas: Yeah, so topic one. as my wife is going to be hearing it over and she's going to hit me afterwards. Where? Does the line between preparedness And nut barnus. End.
outofideas: Peace.
Chris: bunker.
outofideas: that is But it feels like it's before Bunker.
Chris: Yeah, maybe.
outofideas: you know Like... My wife. is is She's very nervous about the world. Which...
Chris: yeah
outofideas: is Perfectly.
Chris: Oh, yeah, I mean, that's... rational right now.
outofideas: Perfect. we're fully rational right now and she she wants to have. Some. You know. Survival food and things that you know gets the food slice by goes down and all this which seems rational
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: But then I told her I was the The conversation had we had the other day was, But where's the line?
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Right. She was talking about some people are caning water. in case the water system goes and i said That seems crazy.
Chris: What?
Chris: Yeah, no you just boil water.
outofideas: What's that? So she's like, well we should buy some of these life straws so that we can get water. I said, no, you just. boil water. Those things are for when you can't boil water.
Chris: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Well, how are we going to boil water?
Chris: Now, I mean, i so i still keep I still have a...
outofideas: i think
Chris: Iodine. tab kit, but... Yeah.
outofideas: Sure. Baby. Go pull out the water.
Chris: but that But that's just from like a leftover from camping eons ago.
outofideas: Go to sleep.
outofideas: Right. Just boil the water.
Chris: Yeah!
outofideas: you're If you're in your house...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Boil water.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And she said, well, how do we do that?
Chris: Well, again, we proved you proved that the best survival technique...
outofideas: i said
Chris: or tool is a partner with a lid.
outofideas: That's mine.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Still, to this day, my favorite.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: a pile of lead is boiling water is more important than anything else you could do
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: So... but you know I will. This is not. She's not. this but you know some of these preppers are like i've got this and you know i can survive eight months off the grid And then what?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You know, if the system has collapsed to the point where we're eight months in. What do you do on 9? than my ninth month.
Chris: yeah Yeah. Yeah, that's great that you have all that, but hopefully... You've also got to plan, you know. probably within that first month of starting, okay, well, this is what we're going to have to plant.
Chris: and you know
outofideas: Right. But... Like if the apocalypse happens. your toilet paper that once it's gone you can get a new one
Chris: Oh yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Right. Good.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You gotta have a better plan than just I stockpile a bunch of toilet paper.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: you know
Chris: yeah that's one of those silly things the stockpile i could see like you know keeping enough so okay we get a storm and the power goes out for a couple days or whatever But...
outofideas: Yeah, that's right. I've told her like, Hey.
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: dried beans having wood you know so that you know we have a wood stove and yeah you know you can just boil water over a campfire, you have those options.
Chris: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah. Hmm. yeah
outofideas: you know.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Knowing where there's... water supply near you is a big thing. you know. And we have. been talking to her about like you know setting up the RV so that In case of real emergency, we can...
outofideas: be out of here. and
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: you know, survive comfortably in the RV for a few days.
Chris: Yeah. yeah
outofideas: You know. I would say. ah Two weeks.
Chris: Mm -hmm.
outofideas: Would be my line.
Chris: Yeah. That sounds rational.
outofideas: If you're planning for... Anything more than two weeks inside the United States.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I don't know what you... Gonna get out of that.
Chris: Yeah. Um...
outofideas: you know.
Chris: I mean, you're. donating a lot of money to these
outofideas: Wow.
Chris: Prepper sites.
outofideas: That's... that's it's a hit It's a very big industry.
Chris: Yeah. Oh yeah.
outofideas: You know.
Chris: yeah that's like i like i've seen a couple of these reels And... um It's like... Yeah, you know, I'm prepared in case the things go downhill i've got my garden in the backyard so when everything goes to shit i've got two tomatoes and a cucumber to eat
outofideas: Right. which is real good for about a week.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You know. Or. I mean... Your garden's real good. for maybe a month.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Because it's only going to grow for about a month and then...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Then what?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah, I mean...
Chris: Oh, side tangent to that.
outofideas: Okay.
Chris: Have you heard? Of. seed library.
outofideas: Yes.
Chris: Really? I'd never heard of it before. My wife's
outofideas: You've never heard of the seed library?
Chris: Yeah, my wife said that... um There. when she was a Girl Scout leader or whatever, they had they had the little... liket little libraries that people could. you know go get stuff from and they're going to use the leftover they had like three or four leftover they're going to convert them to seed libraries and put throughout the neighborhoods
outofideas: well i've part of it in a much More sinister way, I guess. That's just another way because I'm not I'm not left -handed but
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Uh,
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: i've heard of like the seed library basically that you know.
Chris: oh yeah it's got a copy of everything or whatever.
outofideas: Like... right and there was there was talk one time of like putting on the moon
Chris: Mmm.
outofideas: So that, you know, it's it's there. And it's... Preserved. Um, Yeah, mean no, that's a great. idea like You should have. we We talked about.
outofideas: Yeah, you should have a garden in your house nowadays because you can't trust the food supply.
Chris: oh my
outofideas: Look at all of the things that have been.
Chris: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Recalled this year.
Chris: Oh my gosh. Yeah. What's it?
outofideas: Yeah, absolutely.
Chris: I mean, beef. it's the one of the latest ones
outofideas: Good luck eating d beef right now.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: i told I was talking to my dietician about it. and I was like... It's very hard to eat healthy vegetables right now because... What is safe?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: and yeah you're safe if you can if you you can source local products that you know are grown local, but you can't even do that with farmer's records. Sometimes they just go to BJ's and... Take the labels off.
Chris: Yeah. yeah
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: you know and in She was like, well, you know, if you if you cook, we were talking specifically about lettuce you know if you cook the lettuce up to 170 degrees it kills all this stuff i said What am I eating, lettuce soup?
outofideas: what what
Chris: o Yeah, will no one wants to eat wilty lettuce.
outofideas: What the... Nobody wants hot lettuce.
Chris: Oh, God, that's like I was so disappointed. I got a. I got some kind of sand. It was like a panini. and i didn't read it and it had lettuce in it i was like oh this is just gross slimy green.
outofideas: Oh, thank you.
outofideas: If... if If my burger has lettuce and it sits... for more than three minutes. I'm not eating that burger. Because I don't want my burger to be that lettuce, you know, wilty and gross.
Chris: Buh Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah. Yeah, like we I mean i've We talked about it. having a vegetable garden with you know kale or some sort of leafy green and some vegetables and i said those don't i'm on board with that i don't think that's crazy pepper i think that's actually
Chris: mm -hmm
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Smart.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: no Grow your own vegetables. Can them. store them. But you're not. you're probably not going to be able to grow enough for you to survive off of it a year.
Chris: No.
outofideas: you know.
Chris: Unless you've got... Like... a couple acres just for that.
outofideas: Right. Yeah, I don't have enough land.
Chris: Yes.
outofideas: I don't have hectares enough land.
Chris: ah The old hectare.
outofideas: Yeah. But I always think about like the first aid side of it. That's because my brain goes to the first like.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: We do live in a hurricane risk area, not high risk.
Chris: Yeah. yeah
outofideas: you know, having a good first aid kit that's ready to go.
Chris: Mm hmm.
outofideas: And unfortunately... it Just my personal view, you can't buy a good varsity kit. You have to make it yourself.
Chris: yeah Yeah, because they put garbage in there you don't need.
outofideas: they put garbage in there they don't need and the stuff you do need they leave completely out
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: you know. And...
Chris: Ooh burn ointment, throw that it away.
outofideas: Yeah, so, well... I've been teaching. CPR for Girl Scout troops for years now. It's pretty much the only place I teach CPR now. and the first aid section they always laugh because i'm like all right bring your first aid kits out here and i just take and throw away almost 90 % of their first aid kits.
Chris: Mm hmm.
outofideas: And they're like, what do we need? we need antibiotic cream i said
Chris: Nope.
outofideas: So. You're going to put that kit in your car. and it's not temperature controlled you have no idea when that stuff goes bad
Chris: Yep. yep
outofideas: It's no good to you. we need We need Advil, okay? Well, if you're going to take that Advil out every... you know six months and replace it
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Cool.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Otherwise. It's no good.
Chris: Hmm. Yeah.
outofideas: You know. And the the one... Troop leader. She kind of went off on me because I taught the girls. tourniquets.
Chris: Mm -hmm.
outofideas: And she's like, how dare you teach kids tourniquets? I said. tourniquets are first aid.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I think it's our basic first aid now.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And they were perfect basically, by the way, they were basic turn. First day when I was in Boy Scouts.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You're dead. 80s and 90s. right it's not they didn't go away
Chris: Now.
outofideas: It's just now that we... we just finally recognize oh yeah these things are probably more important than we thought
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You know. So, you know, I tell them. I take their kids. I literally give them lists. It's because they the one troop this year, they were going to...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: The Ozarks for a week.
Chris: Hmm. oh Yeah
outofideas: i said that's pretty. serious snap mountains here are the things you have to take i want you to take mylar blankets i want you to take
Chris: a
outofideas: you know. waterproof first aid kits with bubble and i just gave them lifts
Chris: yeah Yeah, cravats and 5x9s, not...
outofideas: That's five by nines.
Chris: Tape -en!
outofideas: i said if you want to spend a little extra money a sam splint is not a bad thing to have
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You know. Bye. c Cravats and tape. We'll do the job. And they'd always laugh because I'm like.
Chris: huh
outofideas: Don't even buy yourself medical tape, just buy duct tape.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: It's gonna suck coming off. but it's going to do the job while you're ah hiking.
Chris: Yes.
outofideas: You know.
Chris: And you can use it for other things.
outofideas: You can use it for other things. that's what i tell them all the time and like look at stuff that's gonna last forever
Chris: a
outofideas: Sit because your kids hopefully never used.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: But when you need it.
Chris: Yep.
outofideas: You need it quick.
Chris: yeahp Yeah, you don't want to open it up and moths fly out of it.
outofideas: Yeah, and and A.
Chris: Huh.
outofideas: They had. The one. Troop. we had this conversation and i'd look this is My opinion this is not the opinion of the Mythograph podcast incorporated in any way. shape or form. And I'm sure you might have a different opinion.
outofideas: I said, don't put rubber gloves in your kit. Your vinyl glove.
Chris: Oh, no. Yeah, don't put gloves on there.
outofideas: And they're like, well, what about, I said. They're they're like, you know, PSI.
outofideas: Unfortunately. You're going to have to take the risk because.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: You put that glove in a... Un... temperature controlled area and it's going to deteriorate and then it's worse than having no glove
Chris: Mm -hmm. Yeah.
outofideas: Just have nothing.
Chris: Yeah, as long as you're not licking your hand afterward, you're fine.
outofideas: Bye -bye. I had that conversation with somebody that worked the other day. I said, you know, and and Not that that's right. But we didn't use to put gloves on every - Call.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You know.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Just kind of. played about a year.
Chris: Mm hmm. Yeah.
outofideas: You had gloves with you, and if you had, oh, oh, nasty patient. The club's on. Yeah.
Chris: Yep.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: yeah like any anytime i went to start an iv i always put gloves on
outofideas: Sure. Yeah.
Chris: But... Yeah. Yeah. oh i gotta take your blood pressure I don't need to put gloves on for that
outofideas: and Yeah, I don't need gloves for that. Yeah, exactly.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: and then they because they always laugh at me because i wear shorts all the time of words and they're like well what if you get blood in your on your legs i said well i'd rather have it on my legs than on my pants that then keeps the blood against my legs
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Those pants don't do anything.
Chris: Yes. the They do the first two shifts you have them.
outofideas: To keep blood off of you.
outofideas: ah Sure.
Chris: But after that, yeah, any repellent is gone.
outofideas: Maybe. Yeah. as soon as you watch them it's the
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: That doesn't exist anymore.
Chris: But just don't wash your pants.
outofideas: We could just...
Chris: Just kidding.
outofideas: Never watch your pants, folks.
Chris: It just put a wreck in for...
outofideas: That's the real... opinion of the Music Drive Podcast Incorporated.
Chris: yeah put it
outofideas: Don't wash your pants.
Chris: Yeah, just put a rec in every shift.
outofideas: Do you remember like... Again, we're of the same generation.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Early 2000. These boots have... Bloodborne pathogen protection in them!
Chris: Oh my gosh, yes.
outofideas: And now we're all walking around in hey dudes and sneakers.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I remember buying EMS boots because they were like, these ones are they've got the special liner for.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Bloodborne Pathogen Protection.
Chris: Yep.
outofideas: What do y 'all have so open sores on your feet all the time?
Chris: Right.
outofideas: What's going on with you people? and then you're just walking around in gallons of blood what's going on
Chris: Ugh. ah
outofideas: Yeah. Yeah.
Chris: yeah Yeah, but at the time, we're like, oh, yeah, we'll buy that.
outofideas: Nope. Yeah, at that time we were like, oh yeah, we need that.
Chris: Yeah, right. There you go. Just give me two pairs.
outofideas: Yeah. The $400 pop.
Chris: ah
outofideas: I'll take two.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah, I do.
Chris: yeah yeah the same boot they sell it to john q public it's a 50 pair of boots
outofideas: Oh, yeah. 100%.
Chris: Yeah, you put fire EMS police on it.
outofideas: As soon as they...
Chris: sh
outofideas: As soon as you said it's Bates... fire ems it was like that's 400 right there
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. Yep. Yeah.
outofideas: You saw it in Gauls. It's like...
Chris: Oh gosh. Yeah.
outofideas: yeah i You know, one of the things that drives me nuts about first aid kits is I look all the time. is
Chris: Mm hmm.
outofideas: Just the bag themselves are bad.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Just. I literally. Tell the troop leaders. Go get a vacuum sealer. Make up your kit. and vacuum seal it in ah in a plastic bag. And they're like, what? I'm like.
outofideas: It's waterproof. it's weatherproof it'll do everything you need to do and it costs you
Chris: Yeah. Yep.
outofideas: Five cents.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You know, do you want to borrow my vacuum sealer?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Cool.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah, that'll be $10.
outofideas: Yeah. Right. yeah mean It would be nice to have a super nice waterproof zippered bag, but...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I don't think so Good luck finding something cheap.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: You know? Yeah, that's just my view on preparedness. It's it's good to be prepared.
Chris: Right.
outofideas: You know.
Chris: what's like these people that are like oh i've got you know
outofideas: We'll...
Chris: 5 ,000 rounds of ammunition
outofideas: right
Chris: Cool.
outofideas: but Well... I used to work for a man who told me. i've got ah I've got enough guns. that the government would have to bring a tank at me and i said You only have two hands.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: What the hell do you need more guns for?
Chris: right Right.
outofideas: What? What good does that do you? I guess. or i Or the one maniac who... I have to specially reinforce the... floor in my house because my ammo safe is too large.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: What?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: What's going on in this world
Chris: Yeah. Enjoy your time on the FBI watch list.
outofideas: Right. yeah That person is for sure on an ATF watch list.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: For sure.
Chris: Yeah. Oh yeah.
outofideas: yeah
Chris: Ah.
outofideas: So my wife and I are doing the balance right now. What to be prepared.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Dry beans.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Canned vegetables.
Chris: Mm hmm.
outofideas: I... Pretty good.
Chris: What's like the people that like stockpile gasoline it's like cool gas goes bad and like what three months.
outofideas: Yeah. And that's good. And I think it's even quicker if you put it in those plastic jugs.
Chris: Hell yeah.
outofideas: It's really... Yeah. What are you doing here?
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: No, I think diesel fuel. will It's a lot longer, but... Still not. years.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: Oh, no, I had to always tell her, like... bicycles are the way of of the apocalypse.
Chris: Mm -hmm
outofideas: like if
Chris: There.
outofideas: Everything goes down. Peace. A bicycle is easily maintained and...
Chris: hu
outofideas: Just use that forever.
Chris: Because you don't have to feed it like a horse.
outofideas: That's true. That's true.
Chris: And it won't try to kill you.
outofideas: But you can eat it. Well, sometimes I do. Amen.
Chris: Yeah, well. Yeah.
outofideas: You can't eat the bicycle. Can't eat the horse.
Chris: hi Wahh! Well, we're going to find that out soon in America.
outofideas: Right.
Chris: Yes.
outofideas: Let's leave that out of our list of things we don't talk about anymore.
Chris: Yeah. yeah, yeah.
outofideas: I guess go on the topic too.
Chris: Sure, topic two.
outofideas: I hope it's all about horse meat.
Chris: Yes it is. No. um I was thinking about this the other day. i'll listen I can't remember. they were Somebody who was talking about, like... I don't know, close -up magic tricks or something. what What ha - What happened to magic tricks?
Chris: Because I feel like like growing up, there was you know like David Copperfield. and all that kind of stuff and then yeah a few years ago as well like chris angel and the other people but is it because cell phones are everywhere now that we prove that a lot of this is tokus or hokum or what
outofideas: Well, I hope.
Chris: see
outofideas: We all realized it was always hokum.
Chris: You don't. No. David Copperfield moved the Statue of Liberty.
outofideas: What?
outofideas: Hmm.
outofideas: Starting to worry about you.
Chris: But remember, they were like those there were those giant TV specials and...
outofideas: Oh, yeah. I remember remember the ah behind the magic one where the guy wore the mask.
Chris: Yeah.
Chris: Oh yeah.
outofideas: and want to give away secrets of the magic
Chris: Oh yeah, because they were going to track him down.
outofideas: clubs, all that crap. Bruh, of course they were. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because the scariest people in the world are stage magicians. of
Chris: Siegfried and Roy.
outofideas: Right. Yeah. ah Come on. um Yeah, I I think maybe it's just... Why would you care about?
outofideas: a magic show now when you can just watch whatever you want on AI.
Chris: Yeah. I guess. But like as a kid, did you have a magic kit?
outofideas: Never.
Chris: Really?
outofideas: I've never... cared about magic tricks.
Chris: Oh, man. Yeah, I had the magic kit. and
outofideas: Yeah, it was never on my list of things I cared about.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I guess because...
Chris: Huh.
outofideas: I'm just... A grump?
Chris: um Maybe.
outofideas: And I don't see the joy in things.
Chris: I don't know.
Chris: she a Little eight -year -old Ron.
outofideas: yeah
Chris: Meh.
outofideas: well's like It just never impressed me. Like the first time my grandfather, like. Pulled a quarter on my ear. I was like, yeah, it's behind your finger. Just a little what? My God, he goes... It's not impressive to me.
outofideas: yeah I know where my nose is.
Chris: ah
outofideas: It's on my face.
Chris: oh god I was terrified for 30 years that I'd lost my nose.
outofideas: Yeah, I just I don't I think.
Chris: ah Huh.
outofideas: I'm sure there's still, I mean. It's still around.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I guess I couldn't tell you the last time I've seen. Somebody doing a magic trick near me.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Or like a magic show.
Chris: what if
outofideas: advertised. Near me. I guess.
Chris: See.
outofideas: I'm sure Penn & Teller still do things, right? at They're still out there.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: just
Chris: Yeah. yeah Uh, Oh my gosh. So I typed in. to Google. a Magic Shop Near Me.
outofideas: Okay.
Chris: the closest The Magic Warehouse. Let's see. This is in. Where is it?
outofideas: So. Location that cannot be disclosed. do this.
Chris: That's what I... Yeah, it's just got a phone number.
outofideas: Look. Thanks.
Chris: ah Oh, here we go. ah Hunt Valley, Maryland.
outofideas: I don't even know where that is.
Chris: don't either
outofideas: I don't think that's close.
Chris: Yeah. No. No, it can't be.
outofideas: The first are the fact that the word valleys in it. I don't think that's close to the score
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah. i
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I don't. I couldn't tell you if there's a magic shop near me. i'm sure there is i mean i live near philly so i'm sure there's one in Philadelphia.

outofideas: Maybe it's Harry Potter's fault.
Chris: Maybe. Bastard.
outofideas: Because all these kids grew up like...
Chris: Mm hmm.
outofideas: Wanting wizards, not... guys and top Guys. Top code. Stop having some creeps.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: pulling bunnies out of they wanted like
outofideas: Side tangent to this. I just had this weird... thought earlier today, which... Kind of sort of applies to this. I get it. Reels all the time. like of Warhammer 40k. Clearly AI generated Warhammer 40k stuff. and now i'm getting like star wars ones
Chris: Oh, yeah.
outofideas: I'm all about it, bro.
Chris: Yeah, some of them are really good.
outofideas: Some of them are amazing.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I'm like... a What?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Why not? i Can I just watch this as a movie?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Make this as a thing.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And it's like We're living in the world where I get... That's why I don't care about him. I just i could see... I want to see Star Wars and I could see. People who care about Star Wars making Star Wars stuff.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: I don't care about some dude like, oh, it's the Ace of Spades.
outofideas: Cool.
Chris: Yeah. Well, if I go to the the magic warehouse. ah The categories are beginner magic.
outofideas: Okay, sure.
Chris: card tricks.
outofideas: Sure. Sure.
Chris: Close up. coin tricks Dove magic. I like that doves have their own field. Escapes. fire magic.
Chris: Kids show magic. Mentalism.
outofideas: Girl.
Chris: parlor magic, rope magic, and stage magic.
outofideas: Oh, man.
outofideas: Did you also think that magicians... All feel a little skeevy. Just a little bit.
Chris: ah Maybe?
outofideas: Like it's a con. Great.
Chris: Yeah. Oh yeah.
outofideas: It's all a con and and I guess One of the things, I mean, I listen to Penn. Gillette's podcast for a few years. And one of the things I appreciated about him was he was always like, this is.
outofideas: This is entertainment. This is magic. This is fake. you know be upfront about it, but the musicians are like, no, this is real.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Like the Criss Angel, like, I really do it. and you're not Really doing that, bud.
Chris: Oh yeah.
outofideas: Yeah. You know. Stop pretending like it's ah it's a cool thing you're doing, but it's not real. You know.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I think that's the pro - Maybe the problem is as a species. People used magic to con too many people. Over the years.
outofideas: Over the generations, you know.
Chris: Could be. Yeah.
outofideas: And now... in a world where a little more skeptical and agnostic. It's not. It just doesn't have the appeal anymore.
Chris: yeah Maybe... Oh, here's one in Rockville. Mac. Maximum Magic Shop.
outofideas: Maximum ah to the max.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Um, Couldn't tell you where Rockville is either.
Chris: but It's right outside of... DC. David Riegel's locking dollar -sized copper and silver set. Okay.
outofideas: I don't know David Regal is.
Chris: I don't know what that is. Hmm. Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah. I mean I think it's like I've seen the... the card artistry things where people just like shuffle cards in beautiful ways and it makes it looks cool it's like a it's a skill it's a hand skill
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: It's cool looking.
Chris: We could join the magician directory. All you have to do is put someone's email in here and you can join their mailing list.
outofideas: Good.
Chris: I wonder who I could sign up.
outofideas: Um,
Chris: for
outofideas: Get some people at work. You could do that too.
Chris: ah Well, the former deputy chief I know his personal email now.
outofideas: There you go
Chris: That would be great.
outofideas: That would be good. I just... Yeah.
Chris: Oh.
outofideas: We could shoot.
Chris: Oh, sir.
outofideas: Like. If you had your choice right now... If I paid for it, would you go to a magic show?
Chris: Um,
Chris: like ah Like a stage show?
outofideas: Like somebody's like. Coming to the Civic Center is...
Chris: Ugh.
outofideas: Wizzo, the great magician.
Chris: Maybe?
outofideas: Would you?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Man, I really think I would.
Chris: yeah See him pull all the scarves out? stuff.
Chris: Ah.
outofideas: I don't know that I would go to that show.
Chris: May I ask for a... You know, the... person from the audience who obviously was not placed there.
outofideas: right
Chris: You know? Yeah.
outofideas: Clearly wasn't placed there.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I... I am. Yeah, I don't think I would go to that because I just... I don't know. that Again, I think I'm just too much of a skeptic. I also don't really like going to like stand -up comedian shows.
outofideas: Um, Because I don't find them as funny as... i don I don't like this weird... This weird crowd thing where everybody's supposed to be in on it.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And I'm not in on it. I don't know why. i'm just not like i don't get it It's not my thing. Hmm.
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: Well, now I want to make sure Wizzo... the great stage musician shows up to the Civic Center.
Chris: but Yeah, yeah
outofideas: i'm gonna start this is where i'm secretly starting my magic career Today.
Chris: Oh. I like this. is magic real no supernatural supernatural magic that breaks the law of physics does not exist in a scientific in a scientifically verifiable way well doesn't that Just prove that it's not.
Chris: scientifically verifiable, so it's magic.
outofideas: Bye -bye.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: The only magic is the magic of our hearts.
Chris: Ooh. Yeah. yeah
outofideas: That's a... Yeah. I don't know, it just always feels... skeevy to me
Chris: Yeah. I can see that.
outofideas: But... You know. If you enjoy it. You wouldn't watch it twice.
Chris: No, no, no
outofideas: Right.
Chris: Yeah, that's like a one and done thing.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: but The number two response is magic real in the Bible.
outofideas: Okay. I'm not touching that one right now.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: I got you. I got comments about that offline.
Chris: Let's... Let's take this fictional book and talk, it yeah.
outofideas: Well, you did it, so.
Chris: Yeah, yeah.
outofideas: Does David Copperfield still do shows?
Chris: Ah. um i don't know
outofideas: Because, boy, he got. I could tell you the Statue of Liberty thing was like in the 90s and it hasn't done anything since that I know of.
Chris: a copper field whose real name is David Seth Kotkin.
Chris: Huh.
outofideas: Basically why he changes the cover film.
Chris: Well, see, now we know his real name. Yeah. Curse me.
Chris: American illusionist and stage magician who some consider the greatest magician of all time.
outofideas: I thought that was Harry Houdini.
Chris: that's yeah receip Was Harry just an escape artist?
outofideas: I think he's both. I mean, what's... the What's the difference between an illusionist and a skateboarder when it comes to a magician? Now we're like... weighing in on
Chris: Ooh. David Copperfield is no longer performing regular live shows. He officially ended his 25 -year residency at the MGM Grand in Vegas April 30th of this year.
outofideas: Ah, we just missed it.
Chris: um
outofideas: Damn.
Chris: He had did mention though that he plans to work on a new large -scale project. Hmm, what could he be making to disappear this time?
outofideas: I guess the only thing I would think of, like, Vegas would be the only place I'd be like, I guess I'd go to a magic show because it's Vegas.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Right.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: When I was in Vegas, I did not go to any magic shows.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I was too busy.
Chris: There were no card tricks
outofideas: uh
outofideas: Only the card tricks where I made money off of casinos.
Chris: Hmm. Hmm.
outofideas: Yeah. no i
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: yeah
outofideas: I'm not a live show guy. at all it drives my knife my wife a little nuts i think
Chris: yeah
outofideas: Because I don't. like I don't enjoy going to live bands.
Chris: Well, I think a lot of it's because of all the people there.
outofideas: That's... part of it.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: But like...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah. like
Chris: yeah It's the people.
outofideas: Sitting in a concert hall for three hours listening to music does not sound fun to me.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Right.
Chris: Wait, and yeah, it's like...
outofideas: like
Chris: yeah do you Do you stand up and, like... yeah Do you tap your feet? to you. I don't know
outofideas: I stand there with my arms folded.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: have with my head down, with my chin in my chest.
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: All the time.
Chris: Yeah, the people that sing along and dance. and
outofideas: Right, but that's even worse to me because I'm not here to listen to you sing.
Chris: Right.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: Or the people that... video the whole thing.
outofideas: Yeah. Yes, the side change and tell you this like I was thinking about that the other day you'll never have Music, like we had music.
outofideas: in the 90s and two thousand early 2000s, right? like albums that are like set up as albums
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: So I bet now.
outofideas: bands or artists, they just put out their pop hits and that's it.
Chris: Mm hmm. Yeah.
outofideas: they don't put this thing as a b -side song because Who's listening to that song?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: How would you even listen to that song? Like you would not. even be able to have access. or for I guess. I don't know. too. More than. three songs from a band anymore.
Chris: let's see Are B -side songs still a thing? Yeah. Yeah, they're largely gone because everything's streamed.
outofideas: Yeah, I mean, I just...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: They stream. we livedve We had the best set, right? We had... we had Albums were still cool and we got the perfect timing of music videos.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And now that's all gone.
Chris: Yep.
outofideas: Like.
Chris: yeah and first song that was played on mtv
outofideas: Never do we see him again.
outofideas: The first song we did on radio a MTV was rate Video Killed the Radio Star by The Bengals.
Chris: correct
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: yep Yeah.
outofideas: And the album or the video kind of sucks.
Chris: Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. but that was the thing like i was explaining to my daughter um There was this country artist she was talking about. I was like, yeah, I was like his music videos. They were like. five or six of them, and they told a story, but they all wove together. She's like, get the hell out of here. I said, look it up on YouTube. It's a thing.
outofideas: Yeah, because Music videos were a -
Chris: Hmm.
outofideas: A huge thing.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I mean... To what? To me. watching mtv was how you found new artists then you went and bought their albums.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You know.
Chris: Or at least the single.
outofideas: um
Chris: And the single always had... A side B on it that had something else.
outofideas: I'm not... sure I ever bought any singles.
Chris: Really?
outofideas: I wasn't into it.
Chris: have
outofideas: Cause like.
Chris: Hi.
outofideas: I like it. One of my favorite albums was Tool Sober.
Chris: m
outofideas: I'd like. you have to own the CD to realize there's 99 blank tracks on that. and then there's a ah random bonus song at the end.
Chris: oh ah Yep.
outofideas: Right? like
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: okay Hey.
Chris: Yeah, and that was the thing. Some of the bonus songs... We're alike. you just waited a little bit and they played other ones were just tied into the last song it was yeah Ah.
outofideas: okay
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And now it's... it's
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: It's gone.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: You hear like...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: the same three songs from every band.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: And...
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: That's it.
Chris: Hmm. Yeah. Yeah, Columbia House.
outofideas: Yeah.
Chris: god day
outofideas: I'm pretty sure they're still coming after me for money.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: I got those 10 CDs, though.
Chris: yeah yeah We'll give you these 32 cassettes. Yeah. i remember you like going through checking and you're like you know you've run out after like the sixth one you're like i don't know uh uh meatloaf sure
outofideas: Or even like... records We still have a record store in town.
Chris: m
outofideas: I'm sure it's just a... place to sell pot. But.
Chris: Yeah, yeah
outofideas: Like. You can go to record stores now would be weird. You know. I know that the hipster thing now is to buy vinyl albums of stuff, but...
Chris: Ugh. Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah. By the way, final thoughts.
Chris: Oh, yeah, because it sounds so good on vinyl.
outofideas: Talk.
Chris: No, it doesn't.
outofideas: It's...
Chris: No it doesn't.
outofideas: So there. Let me tell you people. If you're listening to this. right now, if you still got this far. vinyl sucks there's a reason The first thing we got away from was vinyl.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: Because it was such a pain in the butt.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. Now eight track. There was a medium.
outofideas: There was a medium.
Chris: Columbia House exists right now, but it is permanently shutting down and stopping new orders on September 15th.
outofideas: Oh. On the 14th, we should order a bunch of shit.
Chris: Oh my god.
outofideas: What are they going to do? We can come after you.
Chris: ah
outofideas: They're gone.
Chris: Yeah, but I don't have a CD player.
outofideas: Oh, that's fair.
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: I don't even have... Oh. Yeah, I don't know that I have a way to play a CD.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Oh yeah, I don't...
Chris: i think we probably have a dvd player somewhere buried away
outofideas: I still have a DVD player. in the fact that i have an Xbox that plays DVDs.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Yeah. Yeah. um I do not.
Chris: But yeah, my laptop doesn't have a CD drive.
outofideas: Oh, God no.
Chris: I could play it at work ah
outofideas: I still have my binder of CDs somewhere. I don't know where it is, but...
Chris: Oh yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: I still have a binder.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Oh. But yeah, I don't. I don't know. There's no way.
Chris: Well, yeah, because when the world goes to shit, you can use those as frisbees.
outofideas: I just don't.
outofideas: Well, I'm gonna sharpen the edges and Odd jobs on the people.
Chris: Yeah. Or will that be the new currency?
Chris: ah
outofideas: I thought it was bottle caps. for
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: inexplicable reasons.
Chris: ah Yeah. Yeah.

Chris: ah I have this copy. Karma Chameleon. You can have everything in the store.
outofideas: Again, how would you play it?
Chris: Yeah.
outofideas: but Good girl, Lydia.
Chris: Yeah.

Chris: Micah.
outofideas: A record player play manually.
Chris: oh Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: Right. you You could spin the needle. and play the music.
Chris: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, because even a cassette, you couldn't.

Chris: Yeah. Yeah.
outofideas: It has to read it.
Chris: God. and once it came out you had to sit there with your pencil and
outofideas: Oh god. I would just throw them away.
Chris: Really?
outofideas: I literally just chucked him. I was so...
Chris: Ah.
outofideas: over it after then at the end because my uh my one car my volkswagen fox would just eat cassettes all the time
Chris: god
Chris: ah That's the worst.
outofideas: All right. and then i was just like now i'm done and then i bought a A CD man. Back when it was, you know. And I taped it to my dashboard and I just played CDs that way.
Chris: Yeah. This one has a five secondon second skip protector.
outofideas: here Mm hmm.
