In this episode I sit down with an amazing man who has done so much for the Mohawk Territory and the Indigenous people of Canada. Fighting for their rights and freedoms that were taken away from them.
He was on the south shores of Montreal on the Kahnawake, Mohawk Reserve. When he was 17 he had made up his mind that he was going to go south of the border to join the US Marines, in South Carolina. He was immersed into a society that was totally racist, but did not experience any racism himself in the Marines. He travelled all over the world with this job.
After 3 years of being in the Marines, he left and came back home to Montreal and enrolled at Dawson College, then went on to Concordia University, where he studied history and philosophy, and political science where he also got his PHD. From 1993-2109 he was a university professor at both Concordia and the University of Victoria out on Vancouver Island. He ran masters and PHD programs they are mostly on militant and indigenous politics.
We dive deep into decolonization and colonization, and how he is fighting to get their rights back from the Canadian government and to get their governments back to the way they used to be.
He is now a political activist as well as an author who has written a few books. You can follow him and his journey on Instagram @taiaiake
He now talks with Indigenous leaders from across the nation trying to restore their governments on the reserves to the way they used to be.
The intro song is provided by recording artist John Maksym it is his single "Blink Now", you can stream the song over on Spotify or Apple Music, or you can follow him and his journey over on IG @johnmaksymmusic
