The Blade's Edge: Hello one and all and welcome back to Blade's Edge, a D&D actual play podcast where we are currently running through Curse of Strahd.
The Blade's Edge: If you were with us last time, pretty exciting ep. We finally figured out the Mad Mage's true identity. Venificus Ridley Valentine, a um somebody who served apprentice of Mordenkainen, legendary mage, and of Azephia Stardock, another legendary mage.
The Blade's Edge: um We also found Jimothy. We finally found him. He is on Lake Luna.
Kyle: My boy.
The Blade's Edge: He has been, it turns out, ah forming some sort of bond and relationship with a creature, an alien-like creature that both um Dasan and Stalvodok, Vesrak and Stalvodok, saw underneath the lake.
The Blade's Edge: ah That seems to be very powerful. it seems like him and this creature have some sort of ah mutual agreement, bond, <unk> etc. um But before we get into all that, I just want to take a quick moment here to shout out some patrons. The Blade's Edge: Valerius Moonstone, at least, this was a big ah hook for Valerius Moonstone for coming into the fogs as werewolves for kidnapping children from the school that he taught at.
The Blade's Edge: Now, while Valerius might have died, his memory lives on through you guys. And ah while Jimothy is no longer a child, you do see this... you know, sort of 70 something year old Triton, ah red robes, blue skin, ears that look like fins, ah dark green hair, has invited you into his town.
The Blade's Edge: You see that nobody else lives here. It is just Jimothy, Yock Sizzler, the guy underneath the water um ah that you guys fought to get here.
The Blade's Edge: And, ah you know, every now and then you'll see a fish, a very weird looking fish pop out of the water and like walk onto land with like legs and come and like grab something out of a hut and then walk back and like dive in the water.
Trevor: ah I was thinking like instant evolution. Like he grows legs, then immediately a torso with arms.
The Blade's Edge: Yeah.
Trevor: Holy shit.
Kyle Beams: I don't know if any of our listeners has have ever watched the anime Gintama, but there's a character named Elizabeth that is essentially like a mascot chicken, and it looks like a chicken, but it's just got a guy inside it, pulls up its legs, or its um outfit, and it's just got big hairy legs, and the fish just walks up like that and goes back in the water.
The Blade's Edge: Yeah, grab something.
Trevor: That's so funny.
Kyle Beams: Ha ha ha ha.
The Blade's Edge: um he would have been able to ferry across your horse if you'd like to sawn.
Vesz'rak: Yes, please.
The Blade's Edge: Nice. ah he He sort of yeah brings over a makeshift, you know, just piece of wood that sort of floats that can hold some weight that he's used and ah brings you guys into his town. You guys spend about an hour short resting and chatting with Jimothy as he says. um Oh, hey, so it's a lot. You guys you guys know who I am.
Vesz'rak: My god, we finally found him.
Kyle: You've been missing for so long.
Vesz'rak: that's like good i I go back to the beginning of my notebook.
The Blade's Edge: What do you mean? I've been missing for so long. I've been here on Lake Luna for like 30 years.
Vesz'rak: Jimothy, you stopped coming to class. You were kidnapped.
The Blade's Edge: Oh.
Vesz'rak: Valerius Moonstone, Mommy Knight, the werewolves.
The Blade's Edge: Like.
The Blade's Edge: Bobby dad and that I don't know, but Valerius Moonstone, that was my teacher.
Trevor: Mommy night.
The Blade's Edge: How do you know my teacher?
Vesz'rak: i he We came here 70 plus years ago to get you.
Trevor: As much as I like the idea of Anabi still being out on the lake just fucking waiting. Like in the rain.
Vesz'rak: okay.
Trevor: ah i' say he's up here.

The Blade's Edge: um Whoa. ah you you You guys came here 70 years ago to find me, and you're just now finding me?
Vesz'rak: look okay

Trevor: Well, your old teacher did die.
Vesz'rak: I died. Valerius died.
Trevor: Yeah. So.

Vesz'rak: yeah he died, like, right away.
Trevor: Yeah, he's dead.
The Blade's Edge: No. Right away, you said.
Vesz'rak: yeah like, right away.
Trevor: Pretty fast.
The Blade's Edge: Jesus Well, i've lost thanks for this backhanded thing there, Mr.
Trevor: Yeah. He got walloped. He was a teacher.
Vesz'rak: Yeah.
Kyle Beams: Also, my observation is that it's been 70 years and no one else has come looking for you.
Trevor: He wasn't really cut out for this.
Kyle Beams: You should be appreciative.
The Blade's Edge: Robot, but I've been doing just fine on my own, thank you very much. I don't necessarily need your rescuing,
Trevor: Random question.
The Blade's Edge: but
Trevor: I've got a question for you. What, why were you kidnapped by werewolves? Is that how you were taken here?
The Blade's Edge: Yeah, I was.
Vesz'rak: Bye, Mommy Night.
Trevor: What happened? What did, did they hurt you or?
The Blade's Edge: Bobby Knight, that's new to me. Bobby Knight's new to me.
Vesz'rak: it Well, the other colloquial term is Mother Night, but with that I don't think she goes by that anymore.
The Blade's Edge: they Oh, yes. Mother Night. That I know. Mother Night. That is i mean it's not anybody that I've ever met. But so the werewolves. Yeah, they they were kidnapping children and they were bringing them here. And some children were being sacrificed to Strahd.
The Blade's Edge: Some children were being like um sold to the Vistani.
Vesz'rak: yeah that's bad.
The Blade's Edge: Yeah, really bad.
Trevor: Oh, God damn.
The Blade's Edge: Some kids were being ah like raised here. Some kids were being turned into werewolves to join their clan. ah For me, they were going to sacrifice me. I was of them that was going to be sacrificed. But I i felt something. They were going to drown me in the lake, Lake Luna. And i I felt something, a presence And I called out and I asked for help. And that is how I met Yacht Sizzler.
The Blade's Edge: And um we've been working together ever since. I've done a bit of traveling before i sort of settled down here on the lake. I have spent kind of most my life trying to get out of here.
The Blade's Edge: or figure a way out of here, whether it's, you know, it could be for me or it could be for, you know, people down the road. But see that shipped out there i've actually ah um i i build ah ship a ship to sail the mists.
Vesz'rak: ah can How? How are you going to sail that nobody can leave?
The Blade's Edge: There are ways to leave. There are people who can leave, and I believe that we can – that there's a way that would be a yox sizzler put our hands together. ah We could do it. And listen, I don't mind getting my hands dirty.
The Blade's Edge: you know i mean I'm not afraid of hard work. In fact, I prefer it. So if there's ah if there's a task at hand, I'm down to do it.
Vesz'rak: Yeah, I get that.
The Blade's Edge: It's just got to be perfect. It has to be perfect. It has to be perfect.
Trevor: Respect.
The Blade's Edge: It has to be exactly perfect. It can't be anything off perfect.
Trevor: Yeah.
Vesz'rak: and I get it. Hey.
The Blade's Edge: Everything has to be perfect.
Trevor: And who else could who else could do it?
Vesz'rak: Look, I, so it ha, yeah, it's gotta be you.
Trevor: It's got to be you.
Vesz'rak: Nobody else. Yeah, exactly.
The Blade's Edge: has to be an eye and it has to be perfect and I can I think I can do it I mean muddied waters muddied water always clears the away in time you know they say hey so yeah it's and if it's not perfect I won't try it you know maybe which is why I haven't tried it yet and I keep working on it but it's gonna be perfect
Trevor: Fuck yeah.
Vesz'rak: Right, right, right.
Trevor: Same, same.
Vesz'rak: So, okay, so let me get, so you don't want to go back home or you do want to go back home?
The Blade's Edge: I think... i'd like to i'd like the ah I'd like the option. I mean, at this point, what, my parents back home are probably dead.
Vesz'rak: I get it.
Vesz'rak: Your teacher's dead.
The Blade's Edge: by fred My my teachers dead, as you've said. Yes, that's very sad. Valerius Boots, don't pour one out. ob Yeah, i mean, I... i I wish to craft this boat to sail through the most dangerous of storms, to sail through the most dangerous of mists, to to give people a sense of hope and salvation. This is a pretty dark and dreary place, and you know I found my my friendship here with Yachs Sizzler.
The Blade's Edge: Yeah, you know it's just me and Yachs Sizzler, two for 20.
Vesz'rak: well well if you're trying to ah two ah Well, if you're trying to bring people hope and salvation, I mean, what better group to help you know help you out than, you know, and I kind of like tap my shield with the sun sword and be like, let's end her, right? I mean, that's what everyone seems to be gravitating towards, right?
The Blade's Edge: Not from my experience, no.
Vesz'rak: Oh, okay.
The Blade's Edge: No. No, not not really. No. If anything, that Mother Night you said, Mommy Night, I don't know that one. But it's it's kind of catching on. Romain Persuasion Check.

The Blade's Edge: Yeah.

The Blade's Edge: You've kind of got to think for this. This Lathander guy you're pitching me, I'm not really feeling that as much. Kind of stuffy. It's like on a shield. It's like battle. It's like it's giving war and desperate times and like blah, blah, blah. On this Mommy Knight, on the other hand, like you've got a good thing going here with the branding.
Vesz'rak: Yeah, yeah.
The Blade's Edge: Like Mommy Knight, that's got something going to it. The werewolves worship Mommy Knight, not me so much, but I'm okay. Me and Yoxus have a good thing going here. I actually owe Yoxisler my life. So I, I, I, my, my work, my life's work is in servitude to, to, to building the ship, uh, and to Yoxisler, you know, I, I, I repair broken things, uh, to redeem what's, what's been broken in me, you know?
Vesz'rak: I get that.
Trevor: Jesus Christ did.
Kyle: Bars.
Vesz'rak: Some people, yeah.
Kyle: Bars.
Vesz'rak: Some people lean on technology, others, their faith in Lathander or Mommy Knight or Spider Mommy or whoever. ah Huh?
The Blade's Edge: That sounds like three different things going on in your head. So I'm confused. So which one of those three is do you, is your kind of thing?
Vesz'rak: What do you mean? I just said, I said one thing.
Trevor: like
The Blade's Edge: Right, okay.
Vesz'rak: i said Lathander. What did you hear?
The Blade's Edge: Right. Oh, no, nothing. Nothing, yeah.
Vesz'rak: Okay.
The Blade's Edge: Um...
Vesz'rak: Uh, so where's what's your first destination after you get the ship all built?
The Blade's Edge: I would probably go home. I would probably go home first and just sort of touch base in the real world, be at Yacht Zizzler, set up a home base for me and Yacht Zizzler in the real world, and then maybe establish a link and start trying to ferry people ah that ah that get trapped here back home if that's something possible that I could do.
Vesz'rak: Uh
Vesz'rak: huh.
The Blade's Edge: ah you know i'm I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed with my boat. What can I say?
Vesz'rak: Yeah, what is, what's the name of the boat?
The Blade's Edge: Yeah. And why has to be perfect, right?
Vesz'rak: It has to be perfect, that's the name of the boat.

Vesz'rak: Okay. ah What Yawk Sizzler? What does Sizzlers get out of this?
The Blade's Edge: ah Well, companionship, you know, me and Yak Sizzler, we share a link, you know, and we share knowledge. Yak Sizzler, I know if I know there's one thing I know about Yak, he loves to read.
Kyle: Yuck.
The Blade's Edge: Yak loves to read. Yak loves to learn. And I'm of a similar mind. So he's always looking for information and stuff. And I'm trying to build my boat. You know, it's got to be perfect.
Kyle Beams: Suddenly all Frenchmen just got terrifying to me because they're all, instead of being Jacques, they're Jacques.
Trevor: They are here.
Kyle Beams: Jacques Pepin, legendary chef of the underworld.
Kyle: Yucky way.
Kyle: um I have a question for Jimothy.
The Blade's Edge: Yeah.
Kyle: Do you know about Strahd?
The Blade's Edge: Of course. Who doesn't? I mean, he rules Barovia, right?
Kyle: What do you, uh, he does rule Barovia. What think you think he's good good ruler
The Blade's Edge: um No. No, definitely not. I mean, it's evident, right? I mean, the people hate him and it's, it's all, it's all death and despair here. There's just, you know, the Vestadier serve him and then the werewolves serve him. And then there's those, those evil druids that used to be around that, you know, ah aren't really around as much anymore used to serve him, but just sort of like, you know, if you serve him, life's okay. And if you don't serve him, life sucks. And, you know, best case scenario, life is okay.
The Blade's Edge: You know what I mean?
Trevor: you
The Blade's Edge: So obviously he's not, he's not very good. He's, He's been obsessed with, you know, he so he's constantly trying to find ah this woman, you know.
Kyle: yeah well we definitely don't serve him as a matter of fact we want him gone
The Blade's Edge: Oh, right on, right on. That sounds great.
Vesz'rak: Yeah, how would you... So let me pitch let's pitch a job proposal, Sharks.
Vesz'rak: What if there was a way to make the mistravels easier for you and Yock Sizzler?
The Blade's Edge: Yeah, I mean, there could be, we're interested in that. I mean, Yach's talking to me right now my head. he's He's letting me know that he's saying in Strahd, obviously, if you guys attacked Strahd's castle or if you were trying to overthrow Strahd, there's obviously going to be knowledge in there, ah information that could help us traverse the mists.
Vesz'rak: What's he saying? Yeah.
The Blade's Edge: And if we were if we were able to get access to that information, I could finish, it has to be perfect.
Vesz'rak: Uh-huh.
The Blade's Edge: And I could take you guys out of here unless any of your souls are stuck here. already if your soul is stuck here.
Vesz'rak: Yeah. I don't think any of our souls are stuck here That sounds like a plan.
The Blade's Edge: Make a deception check.
Vesz'rak: No, no. Yeah, I think that all sounds good.
Trevor: Oh.
Vesz'rak: 18. 18. eighteen
The Blade's Edge: That sounds great. ah That would be great.
Kyle: Mm-hmm.
The Blade's Edge: If you guys did that, we would be able to get information. So you'd get us the information. With that information, we'd be able to use the boat to help ah you guys leave Varovia.
Vesz'rak: What about like, what if the people of Vallaki wanted to leave Barovia? Would you also help them get out?
The Blade's Edge: It depends, right? Because some people aren't real. Has nobody told you that yet?
Vesz'rak: That's offensive, but What do
Trevor: but
The Blade's Edge: Is that news to you?
Vesz'rak: but you mean they aren't real?
The Blade's Edge: This place is like... I've seen it. I've been here long enough to see it. Me and Yach both. This place is like... It resets. People that die come back.
The Blade's Edge: But when they come back, now they're not alive anymore, but they're here. They're like images of their former selves, so they can't leave. They can't be saved. Very few people are originals, original copies.
The Blade's Edge: Obviously, there are those that are originals that could leave and traverse the mists of Astani do it all the time.
Vesz'rak: Thank you.
The Blade's Edge: The werewolves do it. There are certain people, the Old Mist Inquisitors or the the the ah Keepers of the Feather, can do it, but a lot of normal people you see on the street, it's just, they're echoes of a former life, of a former self.
Kyle Beams: Yeah, and you see Doc nodding his head.
Trevor: okay
Kyle Beams: I'm like, I don't know what version I am.
Trevor: What, uh, how often does that happen?
The Blade's Edge: I don't, honestly, I don't know. I think it's just like, when somebody dies, I think if you die here, your soul is trapped here.
Trevor: You die for real.
The Blade's Edge: So if you die, if you die in Barovia, you eventually have another life. Almost like reincarnation in way, because it's not like you live the exact same life, but you're almost reincarnated as somebody else, but you're stuck.
The Blade's Edge: Then that version of yourself can't leave.
Vesz'rak: So I feel like what we're getting at is you would.
The Blade's Edge: Why? none of you have died here, right?
Vesz'rak: No, of course not.
The Blade's Edge: can make another deception check.
Vesz'rak: Of course not.
Kyle: I stand there and I look down and I kind of just like tighten my grip on my axe.
Vesz'rak: Nat 20.
Kyle: Oh my god, dude.

The Blade's Edge: He goes, well, yeah, it's there. You're you're you're born into a new body. That's why Strahd, his whole thing is about finding his first love, Tatiana.
Vesz'rak: Yeah.
Trevor: Buss it down.
The Blade's Edge: But Tatiana Tatiana died.
Vesz'rak: Right.
The Blade's Edge: So have you heard about him like pining after some sort of any eddie sort of female around here?
Kyle Beams: We sure have. Well, I guess ah ah Doc doesn't know that.
The Blade's Edge: Yeah, what's her name? but
Kyle Beams: the rest of the group does.
The Blade's Edge: Oh.
Vesz'rak: ah Not Ezmeral, the fuck. Hold on, hold on, hold on.
Kyle Beams: Ilyana?
Vesz'rak: I'm in my notes.
The Blade's Edge: Irina?
Vesz'rak: I think
Kyle Beams: Irina, yeah.
The Blade's Edge: Right, well this Irina, I'm sure, is, he's, he thinks Irina is Tatiana reincarnated. Which Irina would have no knowledge of, but it could be true.
The Blade's Edge: Right? His former love, his former bride, I think he has a sense for these sorts of things. But, so, I wouldn't be able to take, like you like you said, this the town of Wallachie out of here, because some people cannot leave.
Vesz'rak: i think
Vesz'rak: Yeah, that's a tragedy. But for the rest of us who could leave...
The Blade's Edge: Right, for all of us, everybody standing here.
Vesz'rak: and Yeah, everyone that's standing here could leave. Yeah.
The Blade's Edge: Right, us, this guy, Venificus, and also Yach, yeah, we could all leave.
Vesz'rak: Yeah.
Vesz'rak: um
The Blade's Edge: Philip and Sila, too.
Vesz'rak: What if we smuggled Irina out? Then what? you think Strahd just finds somebody new or do you think he comes after her?
The Blade's Edge: um Well, she can't leave, right? i mean, if she's Tatiana reincarnated, she wouldn't be able to leave.
Vesz'rak: Oh, right. Sorry. This whole thing.
The Blade's Edge: Right.
Vesz'rak: It's so foreign to me dying and coming back.
The Blade's Edge: I think the only thing, if you're trying to, right, no, me too, i have no idea.
Vesz'rak: It's like, I got it.
Trevor: He's
The Blade's Edge: If you're trying to save this woman, though, it sounds like, then it would align back with the goals of defeating Strahd and then letting me and Yacht look at his books and stuff in his library.
Vesz'rak: Right. So if we.
The Blade's Edge: Hey, do you have that you're getting rid of? Any of you guys? you need to offer a person?
Vesz'rak: it like for free.
The Blade's Edge: Yeah, just like I think you're you're getting rid of.
Kyle Beams: Yeah, I open up my chest cavity and a couple of different like bolts and screws and shit come out and I pull out like two daggers.
The Blade's Edge: oh yeah.
The Blade's Edge: Are you getting of those?
Kyle Beams: Yeah, you can have them.
The Blade's Edge: ah Yeah, you never know what so might be useful. Let me grab those.
Kyle Beams: Sure, yeah.
The Blade's Edge: Okay. He tosses them into this massive bin that's maybe right over here. I'll draw on the map. I drew it in black, but can still see I can change it here.
Kyle Beams: Two daggers, some nuts and some bolts.
The Blade's Edge: Yeah, he drives, he throws it in this massive bin that's just full of like the most random shit. Even like, there's like kelp. There's like kelp. There's like dirt. ah Now there's two daggers sitting on top.
Kyle Beams: Taco Bell Diablo sauce packet.
The Blade's Edge: Yeah, and he just goes, yeah, if you never know. but I might need it for, it has to perfect, so you never know.
Vesz'rak: So if we went to war with Strahd, could we count on you guys to be an ally?
The Blade's Edge: let me Let me talk with Yak. I mean, obviously we have a vested interest in doing that, but war, that is it. are Our deal is you defeat Straub, we get you out of here.
The Blade's Edge: But if you want us, Yak's telling me that if you want our help in defeating him, because he can sort of like raise armies of undead and skeletons and whatever.
The Blade's Edge: ah If you want our help, we need knowledge.
The Blade's Edge: He's already seen his, and he points at Bash. But Yach would need to look at all of your minds.
Vesz'rak: Ahhhh!
Kyle Beams: I would offer mine willingly having gazed at this thing and finding it to be the most like terrifyingly hilarious thing, knowing that there are things far more crazy than werewolves and vampires that were my, my main prey. Now I know there's other things out there.
The Blade's Edge: i completely agree. I mean, that's why me and Yox is our boys. I think the unknown, you know, my whole life has been decay and despair and evil ah that I meet somebody who is just other.
The Blade's Edge: You know, but that's what Yox says if you want our help. ah The fight. Hey, listen, I've been known to do a little. Yeah, yeah.
Kyle Beams: Yeah, I'm into it.
Vesz'rak: Yeah, what do you got?
The Blade's Edge: Well,
Vesz'rak: Show me. You do it.
Kyle Beams: i id let I'd let him let him feel me up.
The Blade's Edge: but I'm talking about me.
Trevor: Well,
The Blade's Edge: I can do a little kick. Yeah, I'm not sure. I don't want fill you up.

Kyle Beams: Yeah, that's what I thought was that Yach would want to gaze into whatever is in my mind.

Vesz'rak: Yeah, I don't think he'll like it either.
The Blade's Edge: But Yach will know.
Vesz'rak: That's the problem.

The Blade's Edge: Right. I mean, yeah, you said three things then you said you said one. So, like, I fully understand.

The Blade's Edge: So it's not like a ship that goes on water. It can go on water.

The Blade's Edge: Right. But it's got this Eldritch airy where can fly. And then we're trying to instill some inhibitors here where when you go into the mist, a lot of times it just pops you right back out. Or when you go into the mists, you can't necessarily decide where it is you're going. like So we're sort of combining some technology of like teleportation circles and broom stone, which is sort of this, and it can make it ship stuff fly and sort of all this elder stuff. We just are missing a couple of key runes, which I think that he might have in his ah study. Once we get those runes that I think we can choose where we go.
The Blade's Edge: And then it's simple as that. Simple as pie. Hopefully there's no mist pirates out there. But ah yeah, that's pretty much it.

The Blade's Edge: ah The ground falls away into a sea of fog and then the the lake. um Ahead through the wind through the wind and snow, as it's snowing this morning, you see a high wall of black stone lined with spikes and topped by statues of demonic vultures with horned heads.
The Blade's Edge: Set in the center of the wall is a closed iron portcullis, behind which burns a curtain of green flame. On the other side of the dark wall, Gripping the mountain's edge is a guard tower of white stone topped by golden statues of mighty warriors.
The Blade's Edge: I've put all of that in loot and info. If you'd like to read it, I'll bet you guys have come to the pass to a gate.
The Blade's Edge: That then leads up the mountain.
Vesz'rak: Open sesame.
Kyle Beams: Okay. Open sesame. Green flame.

The Blade's Edge: and gate house The gatehouse portcullis is 30 feet high. The adjoining walls next to it are 20 feet high, lined with stone spikes.
Kyle Beams: Oh, interesting. Ground falls away into a sea of fog. Wind and snow, high black stone. Can I do like a perception check on the demonic vulture statues?

The Blade's Edge: um Yeah, they're kind of like um long necked, big feathery wings, sort of taloned hands and feet, ah long neck with like a, you know, a large head with a beak and a mouth open with some spikes in their mouth. The spikes sort of around the head, the eyes are wide.
The Blade's Edge: It's like a very large sort of winged beast a statue.
Kyle Beams: Interesting. I haven't seen one of those before.

The Blade's Edge: um As you get to here, this is the Western Arch. As you approach this bridge, the snowy pass comes to a gorge spanned by a stone bridge. So this bridge is hanging 500 feet over water.
The Blade's Edge: So this this this these arrows are meant to tell you that this is the hill down here. And it's 500 feet down to the gorge over here. As you get to here and you look back, it's 1,000 feet up.
The Blade's Edge: ah You look back like behind you now and you can go, okay, we could go up a thousand feet climbing this place. We could pass over this, but this is 500 feet over water, this bridge.

The Blade's Edge: um The stone bridge at each end of the bridge is a 30-foot tall, 30-foot wide stone arch. Atop each one of these are two statues of armored knights on horseback with lances charging towards one another.
