like one, so they will be first to depart at 11 23pm, but they decide to wait a little bit because they want to team up with Frank and Margarita and Bill and Joe, because apparently Frank likes Joe and Bill now, even though he hated them last episode. Yeah. I mean, he probably can tell that they're good travelers and that they're a strong team. So yeah, somebody good to make an alliance with. Yeah. But I think it's a good idea.

I mean, this is only the first season of the show, so everything is so new to all of them. And for them to know that it would be a good idea to make an alliance with some people, it's pretty smart. And yeah, I feel like they picked Joe and Bill as like the strongest team. I mean, the first three teams are very strong starting from the beginning, but I think it's interesting how they decided to wait. They all left 12 hours after they checked in at the mat from the first episode. And Phil was very,

But all the people at the front of the pack, the Alliance, Margarita told them that she had seen a sign down the road for a museum. And so they all thought that she knew where she was going and they all decided to jump in a bunch of trucks or cars and make their way to where she said she saw a sign. So anyways, Margarita kind of goes, oh well, I thought I saw a sign. I thought I saw a sign. And they get a couple of hours. They drove for like two hours in one direction. They're like, okay, well maybe we need to turn back. They look at the clue again and they realize that it's probably right under their noses is what they said. They said it's right under our nose in the village. So they have to backtrack like two hours. But they still get there first, like before any of the other teams

Yeah, so they must have been really far ahead. Yeah. Of all the other ones. They probably lost three or four hours. They do find the museum and they find the next, what do they call it? Root marker. The next clue, which is a detour. And they can choose between near or far. So the detour is to photograph African wildlife.

in the near challenge, they can photograph three easy to find species. No, three hard to find species. Oh, but it's closer. Yes. Okay. Yeah. And the far is they can photograph, they have to drive further away, but they only have to photograph one elephant. That's easy to find. Yeah. And it says that that far one is like 90 kilometers away.

Yeah, I don't know. That's the thing I was thinking in this episode. It would probably be a good idea to learn the conversion of miles and kilometers if you're going to be on the show. Yes. Because I don't know that at all. I have no idea. All I think is like, okay, 5K is 3 miles. But to convert that to 90, I don't even know. Yeah. I guess I could figure it out, but... So what would you do if this was us on the race?

Um, I think if I heard 90 kilometers, I probably would pick near because they're going to be in trucks. Like I said, I don't know if they know this when they first read the clue, but the trucks that they're in have like professional drivers and stuff for the park. Yeah. But anyways, I probably would pick near just because 90 kilometers seems really far. And that's like a lot of chances to get lost. And taking pictures of three animals really doesn't sound that much harder than one. Yeah.

So yeah, I would pick near for sure, too. Yeah. So the people at this front of the pack, they all pick near. And then some other teams start getting to the starting line after their 12 hour mandatory rest. And they open the fast forward. And this time it says the fast forward is down the rapids of the Zambezi River. And Pat and Brenda decide to go for it.

So they just put the fast forwards in the clues. Yeah, this confuses me a lot because it doesn't seem like everybody even reads a fast forward or it's kind of like they just feature the person that's going to go for the fast forward. Yeah. They did the fast forward weird in this season and it's still confusing me. We're only on episode two. I'm still confused by the fast forward.
Journey to Paris and Airport Drama

But yeah, Pat and Brenda choose it. So they have to go down these rapids and stuff.

And they get it. They make the pass forward work. They get it. And nobody else. There was no competition. Nobody else even tried to go for it. The thing that I noticed in this episode is that the editing is kind of weird in the show. There's so much less music and sound effects and stuff in this season than in recent seasons. I don't know if I noticed that. It's weirdly quiet sometimes when they're doing stuff.

Yeah, a lot of things have changed from that season to now. So another team that arrives at the starting line of the day are Dave and Margaretta. And they ask some people in the village and they find out right away that they only have to just walk to the museum. They say it's about a 10 minute walk. So because like the sun is coming up. So the first few teams left in the middle of the night, like at midnight.

I'm skeptical of Dave's decision, but it wasn't a bad decision. They get there about the same time. But Dave was telling everyone at the back of the pack where the museum was. He's like, well, they told us it was just a tenant walk down here. Everybody gets there at the same time. He just should have said anything. He should have just said, oh yeah, we're just going to go find our car. Let everybody think that they should keep going. I don't know. They seem too nice for that, though. Yeah.

But all the teams choose the near challenge. Nobody chooses far. So, and they all seem to not really have a hard time finding the three species and nobody really struggles with this challenge. They enjoyed it and they had a good time and they had like fun out there, but nobody had like a real struggle. After they took their pictures, they take the photographs back to the village chief and did the tribal ceremony. I think those are so cool. Those are like some of my favorite parts of the race.

when they get to do something that's local, but if you just go as a tourist, you don't really get to do. Some of the teams seem to really be appreciating it, and some of them didn't really seem to care. Yeah, they just want to get it over with. But so they turn in their photos that they just took, and the chief hands them back a little statuette of the Eiffel Tower, and they immediately know that their next place to go is Paris, France.

And Joe and Bill look so happy. Yeah. Because we talked about this in the last episode. They lived in Paris for a couple of years. So I wonder if the route was already laid out before they got the teams. And then they're like, oh, these people lived in Paris.

Or if they had picked the teams and then laid out the route, I mean like, okay, we got to send them everybody to Paris because we know that Joe and Bill have an advantage. I don't know. Because, yeah, being the first season, they probably were like, let's pick a few places that everybody knows on the season, like Zambezi or whatever they were, Songhui, just barely. This was, okay, so we have to rewind to the fast forward, which is kind of like an oxymoron, I feel like, but when Pat and Brenda get their clue, and they're in Africa, and it says, head to your pit stop in Paris. Yeah, I was like, what? That was really weird. Okay, we're going to a whole other country. Yeah, it was kind of weird, but they all head to the airport and try to book flights to Paris, and it does not go well.

No, everybody, almost everybody really struggles. And there's a lot of drama and a lot of tears at the airport. I wonder what airport they're at. It doesn't really specify what airport they leave from or where they're at. But yeah, there's a lot of struggle here. Leslie, I think it's Leslie. Is she the blonde one? Leslie goes up to a ticket counter.

And Amy kind of follows her up and Leslie says, she's not with me and like puts her hand in Amy's face. And that really made Amy mad. Yeah. She freaks out and she just can't stop talking about it. And Paul is like, well then punch her in the face, punch in the jaw. It's like, what is, what do they think she's going to do in the middle of this airport? A and she, they would be like kicked off the race if they physically assaulted another team. Yeah.

Just try to act tough, I guess. But why would Leslie try and help them get a ticket? It's the race. So she was like, they're not with us. And she puts her hand up in her face. And she's dead not like that. Amy definitely overreacted. And she was crying. But then the ticket agent came and was like, there's no need. Yeah. She says, relax. You don't have to be upset.

to Amy and Amy. Yeah, she gives Amy tickets. And it's really funny to see all these other people are trying to find tickets on the phones in the airport instead of like online or stuff like that. People using phones and stuff. And Emily is upset because she says that her flight leaves in only 11 minutes and they haven't even gone through customs yet. And she doesn't think they're going to make it. And everybody is like freaking out. This was right before 9 11. So like this episode aired.

I can't remember if it was a week before or a week after 9-11. I think the first episode aired the week before and then there was like two weeks off and this episode aired a couple weeks after. Okay. So yeah, like, yeah, airports were very different. You could get through customs in 11 minutes and still make your flight. Yeah. When she says he leaves in 11 minutes, but they make it. They don't miss her flight. Pat and Brenda also, even though they had to fast forward and got there way before the other teams, they also struggled.

I think working together on certain tasks is a good idea or I don't know. I think that some teams just seem to get along better than others. And yeah, they do help each other on tasks and stuff. I think it's a good idea to form alliances be the first couple episodes. But after that, I think alliances can be a hinder to people or get them in trouble. Have you watched the latest season? I haven't yet. Okay. There's like, it's all about the Alliance, the mind five.

So all of our avid race fans that are watching this from the beginning, but have also seen season 32, the last season, you'll know what I'm talking about. I can't wait. I have a few seasons to go. No, I've watched like most of the seasons. I just haven't watched like the most recent five seasons, I think, but yeah. So this alliance quickly falls apart. And that's okay. I think, I think they all just kind of work.

You have been. Yeah, I have been there twice. And it is probably one of my favorite places I've ever been. It is one of the places where I've been where I'm actually like I could see myself living here. I loved it there. So I went when I was 16 in high school with a school tour kind of thing, like an educational tour. And then I went again in 2017 with my boyfriend at the time and got engaged there. It was very romantic.

But I love it. I love it. Um, I love all the history. I mean, it's amazing and it's amazing how old that city is compared to where we live or like our country. Yeah. Just like the history there is churches and everything is just like so much history. So when they were here, it was really fun to see places that they've been that I've been to. You got to go back up. What are you doing?

Yeah, and it put a target on their backs and made everybody not like them, and it was just kind of shady.

So, Paul and Amy have to get out and they get in another taxi and Amy is really upset and she's crying, which I would be really upset too. It isn't as big a deal because there are other taxis and stuff and they found one pretty quickly, but that's just so frustrating.

So she's really upset and Paul is just like, okay, let's go home. Let's just go home. Let's book our ticket to New York. Let's go home. She's like, I'm just upset. And he's like, well, you can't do this without me. And if you keep acting like this, then I'm not going to be here. I'm like, oh my gosh, that is not as a board of teammate. Yeah, I did not like his reaction. But they end up getting to the Eiffel Tower before Kim and Leslie get there anyways. So

Yes. And Paul chooses to do the detour and he goes up and he struggles up there finding stuff and he gets mad and he's like kicking the walls and throwing the telescope around and it almost hit him in the head. And I wish it would have. Yeah. It spins around like almost wax him in the back of the head. And he was just getting mad at Amy for being dramatic and upset and emotional. And he's all dramatic and emotional. Yeah. He's so annoying, but he has a really hard time finding it.

It's really annoying.

But meanwhile, there's some teams checking in at the mat. Bill and Joe get their bill slips on the mat because it's kind of rainy and wet. I think we should keep count of how many mat slips there are. Because I feel like it happens a lot. One. First one, Joe and Bill. How embarrassing. I know. I would die if I slipped on national TV like that. You probably just got to let things go because there's probably a lot of embarrassing moments for these teams. Yeah.

Yeah, it is kind of confusing. So we have Karen and Lenny who are at Notre Dame.

Yeah, I think that would be one of the hardest things about the race is feeling so much frustration. Like if your teammate messed up, but not wanting them to feel bad because it's not like they did it on purpose. And then if you're the teammate that messes up and then you feel so bad for ruining it for both of you. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, so they make their way back and he goes back up. By the time he gets back, there's a few other teams that are there at the same time. Emily is up there and she's like trying to find

a telescope to look through, and she's like, oh, I need 10 francs. And she looks up at this group of men standing up at the level above her. She's like, can I have 10 francs? And they all are like, yes. And they throw money at her. Sometimes it really is an advantage to be a cute girl in this race. Yeah. And so she is looking through the telescope, and Lenny's there. And they kind of help each other. Or she sees it. She's like, Lenny, look.

At this point, they know that they're pretty far back in the race. Cause I don't know if either of them have like seen Kim and Leslie and know that they're behind them or close to behind them. The first episode I liked her, this team came in Leslie and this episode just, they really wrote me the wrong way. Well, Kim, not necessarily Leslie. She just kind of stood back and let Leslie.

People don't know how to pack on this season. Everything is so unknown. People wearing jeans. Yeah. Nobody's matching. It's very, yeah, it is kind of funny. Very new to everyone. They are both now married and have like two or three kids each and they seem really happy and they have lovely families and I'm happy for them and I hope they're not stealing taxis anymore from people. I hope. Or haggling with the taxi drivers. You could have lost a million dollars, ladies. I know. 30 francs or a million dollars. Yeah. I don't know if they would have won, but you know. But of all the teams, they weren't my favorites, so I'm not too sad to see them go.

David Margaretta. I love Drew and Kevin. Yeah, Drew and Kevin are really entertaining. Yeah, I think those are my top three as well. Karen and Lenny, I just feel bad for them.
