Yeah, we're not going to drink any Kool-Aid or anything, or Flavor-Aid, but... I gotta to love it. Well, today I have quite an interesting story for you.

Speaker: I'm so excited. I have to give a trigger warning at the top ah that this does have some child assault.

Speaker: So... But it's one that everyone's kind of heard of. So I think we're all kind of indoctrinated. But when I say the name Mary Kay Letourneau to you, what does that bring up?

Speaker: Oh, my gosh. Yes. No, everything. i feel so. the Yeah. I remember hearing about this when I was younger, like in the paper or something, because, yes, like we've discussed, I was a paper reading child. Yes. um But then a couple of years ago, I think I was at like a family barbecue and my sister's really into true crime. So is my aunt. And they brought it up and we all did a deep dive into it.

Speaker: Yes. and So I have brought that here today because I was searching through kind of just weird cases and the name Mary Kay Letourneau came up and I was like, why does that name sound familiar?

Speaker: It was, I remember this was such a huge deal when I was like in sixth grade, everyone was talking about it. Everyone was up in arms. And then all of a sudden I started reading through it my gosh, all of these like core memories of me sitting down and watching like Como 4 News and this being like one of the headlines.

Speaker: ah It's just crazy. Yes. So we're going to go into it. Okay. i did And if you have any tidbits that I left out, please feel free to jump Will do. Will do.

Speaker: All right. So Mary Letourneau was born Mary Catherine Schmitz in 1962 in Tustin, California, which is an interesting name.

Speaker: Her parents were John G. Schmitz and I don't know why I have to say it like that. And Mary E. Schmitz. I feel like it, like, John... Was it... was it the John G. Schmitz. John Jacob Jingleheimer. Jingleheimer Schmidt.

Speaker: but His name is not my name, too. But she grew up as the third of seven children, which is... That's a lot of kids. That's a lot of kids, yeah. Yeah. And she was the first daughter... She was the first daughter in this family, and then they were also... Grew up very, very strict Roman Catholic. Okay. Okay.

Speaker: Not really sure what that means. Do you have a differentiation between Catholic, Roman Catholic? That's the same thing. Roman Catholic. It's it's all this like Catholicism in general. Thank you. So her father, John Schmitz, was a college professor um and he taught political science.

Speaker: And he was also a very prominent far right politician. Oh, interesting. Who actually served as California state senator, U.S. congressman, and even ran for U.S. presidency on the as ah an American independent party in 1972. Whoa, I didn't know any of that.

Speaker: Yes. So very much. he was Also, he was really big on this family values and like um nuclear families and women have their place in the home and men go out and make the money type of a situation, which is great.

Speaker: Yeah, interesting turn to the fence there. Yes. And her father's political and political career and public standing were permanently up upended, though. So in 1982, it came out that he actually fathered two children outside of wedlock or outside of his marriage with a former college student.

Speaker: Oh, yes. So I just want to foreshadowing. Yeah. I just want to circle back on this. So her father, who's very much like preaching, don't ever cheat on your wife, like Roman Catholic values, like all of these very conservative viewpoints, falls in love with one of his college students, has two kids with her, keeps it secrets yeah keeps keeps it secret for many, many years until accidentally the wife finds out.

Speaker: He had two kids with her? Dos. I feel like that makes it so much worse. It's not an accident if there's two. exactly Exactly. Yes. It is not an accident.

Speaker: So, yeah, so he had this extramarital affair. And then Mary Kay's mother was a former chemist. So she had ah a very large career in the college space as well. But when she married John, Mary Kay's father, she turned into a home, like a homemaker, not a homewrecker, a homemaker.

Speaker: And she hard leaned into anti-feminist activism. So she's campaigning against equal rights in the 1970s, which is crazy to me. Yeah. um And just overall, she was kind of a woman. a woman is to stay in the home and be like barefoot pregnant in the kitchen making dinner. And that is their role. And they should have nothing outside of that. They don't need their own bank account. Like that was very much her vibe.

Speaker: can't relate. I really like my own bank account. I can only relate on my really bad days where I'm like, I want my husband to just do everything and yeah I can sleep and not um not do chores, not to do anything at home. And he's not really on board with that. So I think I'd rather go to work. awkward Yes. Yes. I'm... Yeah, I just... I don't know if I could... It would be a very boring life to me.

Speaker: Oh, 100%. But some people, you know, love it. And i I'm very happy for them. But that doesn't mean that other people should not... Just mind your business. Like whatever makes you happy, do it. That's where I'm at. um So one thing to know is that her Mary Kay Letourneau's mother was quite cold And a lot of people say the reason why her father fell in love with this. Actually, they quite frankly, they're blaming the mother for she's so cold that the father had to step out of the household with one of his students, have two children with her because he was, you know, he had to seek affection elsewhere.

Speaker: ah I'm rolling my eyes so hard right now. Yeah, and I'm i'm just saying i get that divorce is a sin in the Roman Catholic eyes, but I feel like also grooming your student, having two kids with them while you're married to someone else is also a sin. Just get divorced.

Speaker: Yes. Just get divorced, man. Yes. it's also reported that when Letourneau was very young, um seven years old, her older brother, trigger warning, began fondling her. So this is all alleged. This is coming from Letourneau. It hasn't been proven. But she said that this did happen. and She attempted to downplay it because she didn't want, because again, she grew up in this very religious household. And when stuff like that happens, it's not that, oh, this boy is doing something inappropriate. It's, oh, this girl is leading them on type of a situation. yeah And so she was trying to downplay it and she was having a pretty rough time with it.

Speaker: And then a few years later, when she was 11 years old, her three-year-old brother, Phillip, drowned in the family's swimming pool. Oh my God. Apparently she was supposed to be watching him.

Speaker: It's like, jury is out because she was thinking that her mother was watching him. Her mother was thinking that she was watching him. And unfortunately, this tragedy just kind of happened. But Letourneau believed for the rest of her days that...

Speaker: this incident was like the last rift with her parents. And she said at 11 years old, after this incident happened, they no longer felt like someone that she could go to And that it was very, the the house turned like really, really emotionless, very, very cold. And there was just this understanding that she had killed her brother, even though she did It was an accident.

Speaker: Yeah. so um Mary gets out of the house and when she's 18. She ends up going to Arizona State University. This is where she meets Steve Letourneau at a party.

Speaker: So her first husband. The two are married in 1984 and have to drop out of college soon after they get married because they find out that Mary is pregnant with their first child.

Speaker: By 1989, the couple had had four children together. However, their married life was plagued by pretty intense conflict. They had a lot of financial troubles. Just four kids in general is very tough.

Speaker: Also, if you don't have a college degree, sometimes your job opportunities don't provide the most wallet-fulfilling jobs. So they're just having some financial trouble. Also, it's rumored that Steve had a lot of infidelity.

Speaker: But Mary again bringing that that religious views into her marriage she didn't want to get divorced so she kind of just put up with it. And eventually they actually moved out of Arizona when Steve took a job in Seattle. And so ah the family relocated and that is when Mary Kay began taking evening classes at Seattle University to finish her education.

Speaker: Okay. which is how she's became an elementary school teacher. So she's going to school to be a college or not a college. She's going to school to be an elementary school teacher. And she starts at Shorewood elementary school in Beery in Washington.

Speaker: Okay. So now we're going go over to Billy Falau. um He grew up in the white center neighborhood In Burien, Burien, just outside of Burien, right? Burien, West Seattle, kind of. yeah Yeah. was part of a a pretty poor household, for lack of a better word. They were struggling pretty intensely. His father was married five times and 18 children.

Speaker: 18? 18, across those five. So, Vili himself had four other siblings. So, there's five kids in a household. The mom isn't getting a lot of child support. She's having to work a lot of hours. She's working at a bakery. She worked overnights and then also had kind of a day job situation as well. So, she's out of the household a lot.

Speaker: Mm-hmm. um leaving billy kind of up to his own doings she did have her grandfather babysit billy and the other kids and unfortunately this was not the best person to leave children with because he would often put on porno and explicit movies in front of the kids and they would all watch it together oh my god which i can imagine is not great yeah There was also a lot of food instability and a lot of just bill instability in the household. And, you know, that can, that can really drive a lot of trauma when you're young and not really knowing, you know, where your next meal is coming from or like being exposed to this kind of material at such a young age can really mess with your mind a little bit. And I think that maybe left him open to some things that unfortunately will, as we get through the story, you'll kind of connect the dots, but yeah,

Speaker: At Shorewood Elementary, which is where Villy actually ended up going to school. Okay. Villy first encountered Mary Kay when he was at the Shorewood Elementary School, and he was an eight-year-old second grader in 1991.

Speaker: So he was put in her class in 1991. as a second grader. And that is when Mary Kay learned that he actually had a a pretty good talent for drawing and she became kind of close to him, but not, not super close. She also knew his other siblings that were going to this school as well. So she was aware of the family, but she also saw that Billy was maybe an exceptional out of the bunch, or she just had an affinity with him. Hmm.

Speaker: Then a couple years passed, and it's now 1995. And this is when Vili is 12 years old and is put into Letourneau's sixth grade class.

Speaker: So she's officially his teacher again. So they met first when he was eight years old, and now he's 12 and in her sixth grade class. He became the favorite student. You know those teachers that would always have that favorite student? and their Yeah.

Speaker: They always get the praise, and they get the special attention. Well, this... definitely is what happened to Billy. Mary Kay noted that he was an excellent drawer. He improved since he was eight years old. And so she bought him special school supplies.

Speaker: She also allowed him to spend his recess in class where she would give him extra attention and drawing lessons. And they were just spending a lot of time together before school, after school, during lunch,

Speaker: And other people started to kind of notice this as well. And I think this dynamic kind of opened up a lot of psychological manipulation by Mary because I think they're starting to get like a little too close. And because Vili's mother was working so much and Mary Kay's a teacher, the mother is having some sort of like There's a little bit of respect there, right?

Speaker: You're a teacher. You're taking an interest in my son. Of course, like you're also trusted. i mean, teachers are some of the most trusted people in the world. So she's not thinking too much in it. And when Mary started inviting Vili on family vacations and to have like dinner at her house with her husband and her children, the mom is not thinking...

Speaker: anything weird's going on she's just thinking oh this teacher sees that i'm you know struggling and could use some help and she's trying to give my son like a better life so she's on board with this i feel like the part that sticks with me is that if this story had gone differently yes we would be thinking of her as such a saint you know like taking in this kid helping him out like and like just that divergence makes my skin crawl and like, don't know, erodes so much trust in the system and in people that like probably really do want to good do good things for kids. 100%. And it's just, yeah, it's really sad and a little heartbreaking, especially because it could have gone that way and she chose to do something else. yeah

Speaker: What's crazy is that when they would go on family vacations and they would have these dinners, Mary's oldest son is two years younger than Billy. Oh my God.

Speaker: So that's exciting. And so as time is going on, the two are getting more and more close and they're, she's often having him over for dinner there. She's also driving around him around late at night, which I'm like, okay, where is your husband? Where is his mother? What is, why is no one sounding alarms? understand. That's definitely the line. Like having him over for dinner is one thing. Driving him around unsupervised late at night. Yeah. That's a whole thing.

Speaker: Yeah. Like, what are you guys doing for hours? Like, I'm going to need you guys to, yeah, stop immediately. So at one point, this is where ah a turn kind of happened. Villy found a cheap sterling silver ring on the street on the way to school.

Speaker: He brings it to Letourneau and he asks her to marry him. So this 12 year old boy asks this 34 year old woman, will you marry me? And instead of saying like, no, that's a little weird. Let's put a boundary up. She says, of course, she takes off her wedding ring, her real, real wedding ring.

Speaker: And she puts on the cheap silver and she wears it for the rest of the day. What? Yeah. Yep. ah In fact, she only wore that street find found ring in class and pretty much exclusively unless she was going to be around her husband, which is when she put her real wedding ring back on.

Speaker: I didn't know about that. That yes makes my skin crawl. After this, Vili is starting to think, oh, we are going to get married. I'm like really falling in love with her. She is also playing into that. They're writing love letters back and forth.

Speaker: Yeah, he's 12. Yes. And the relationship soon escalated where now they're kissing after school. There's some physical intimacy shortly before Billy turned 13. I think it was like a couple of weeks before he turned 13.

Speaker: He was at Letourneau's house. Her husband left for work and her other kids were sleeping. I would like to know why Billy is awake her other kids are sleeping and why he's there then. But her her kids are sleeping and that is when they have their first sexual encounter.

Speaker: So as time goes on, there's this one kind of critical moment where... Vili's mom is is really exhausted from working long overnight shifts at the bakery. Again, she's she's kind of absent, not on purpose, but because she has to pay the bills and you know keep her family a roof over her family's head. She's also trusting that Mary Kay is is taking care of her son. She's a respected educator.

Speaker: no alarm bells are sounding because she's really just trusting that she this this woman has the her son's best interests. However...

Speaker: The illicit nature of the affair broke wide open on June 18th, 1996, which is when the police discovered Letourneau and Ville parked in a car together outside of a marina.

Speaker: Apparently what happened is that they were in this marina and there was some motion in the ocean of the car, you will. Somebody called the cops. The cops show up and...

Speaker: Billy stays in the back seat and pretends to be asleep. And Mary Kay jumps into the front seat and is like doing up her pants or whatever. And they're they both lie about their names and their ages. So, you know, they knew something was wrong because there was no reason why you would have done that if you there's no reason you would have lied if you didn't think this was wrong.

Speaker: So the officers are very suspect because they see that this is a young boy and they they don't think that he's telling the truth. So they bought brought both Billy and Mary Kay back to the police station.

Speaker: They call Billy's mother, but she defends. At this point, she's defending Mary Kay saying, no, no, this is a trusted teacher teacher. There's no issue with them being out together. In fact, I allowed this.

Speaker: There was nothing going on. That's silly. Just drop it. So the police do drop it. So then after this altercation, Mary Kay's husband is a little suspicious. He's like, why are you spending so much time alone with this kid? What is going on?

Speaker: His suspicions are growing. And eventually it's he confirms his suspicions when he discovers a note that was written by Mary Kay to Vili, like essentially saying she's his wife. And like, it's just a very explicit love letter. my God.

Speaker: On uncovering the affair, Steve became physically abusive towards Letourneau. Both Steve and Letourneau's mother urged her to terminate. Oh, and at this point, I forgot to tell you, she's pregnant.

Speaker: Mary Kay is pregnant with Billy's baby. Oh, no. Oh, no. This is when this love letter comes out. This is when um there's like this physical altercation between Steve and Mary Kay. And...

Speaker: everyone's like Steve and his mother saying you have to terminate this pregnancy. You cannot go through with this. This is crazy to be having a 13 year old. Cause he's 13 at this point, a 13 year old's child.

Speaker: Um,

Speaker: They're trying to keep this all in-house. They're not actually, like Steve and his and his wife are not trying to to talk about this outside of the family. But unfortunately, one of Steve's relatives, not unfortunately, thankfully, one of Steve's relatives calls Child Protective Services and the school district to let them know what's going on.

Speaker: While being clued questioned by police, Villy just confirms their relationship. And in March 1997, Letourneau is arrested for child rape. While awaiting trial, she gives birth to the first child that she has with Billy.

Speaker: And in her initial court appearance and plea bargain, she faced lesser charges and avoided a heavy prison sentence because she essentially she pled guilty. She pled guilty. They gave her six years, but they said she only had to go to a treatment center for six months and then she would be on probation. What?

Speaker: because she's an quote unquote excellent candidate to be rehabilitated from predatory behaviors. So they're saying all you have to do is go to this treatment center for six months and don't contact this kid.

Speaker: Don't contact this kid. Leave him alone. Go to treatment center and you're good.

Speaker: She's like, yes, I've done something horrible. Please like in her remarks to the judge, she's like, please help us help us all. Also the way she talks, she talks like a baby. Have you ever heard her talk?

Speaker: It's watched some videos of her. I can't quite get a scope on it, but it's like, she's, she talks like a child, like a baby. And it's very, it's, it's, it's an odd speech pattern too. um And so she avoids this heavy prison sentence. She goes into the rehab center for, for six months. Her husband, Steve ah divorces her, of course, and gets full custody of, of the, the other four children that she has with him. And they move to Alaska to avoid,

Speaker: Yeah. All of this. While she's in this rehabilitation center, Billy kind of really just goes a little downhill. There's allegedly a lot of drug use that he's doing. He's also very upset. Like he goes into a deep, deep depression.

Speaker: and Later, he says that the drug use and the depression wasn't because of what happened between him and Mary. It was actually because the press were making him feel like he did something wrong, but he's like in love with this woman.

Speaker: And so he's trying to say that is the reason of for the depression and the drug use, not Mary Kay and his relationship. Okay. I just want to put that out there. So Mary Kay gets out of treatment center. It's been after six months. And it's very short-lived because quickly, I'm talking within weeks, she violates the no-contact orders and continues to meet secretly with Vili. Oh, my In fact, she is so blatant about it, they are caught because they are the police found them together in a parked car a block away from her house.

Speaker: Oh my God, you're... I mean, at this point, just yeah just go inside. ah Like, you're not even trying to to hide it. It's it's crazy. um This time, the legal system... And when when the judge saw her come back into the courtroom, because it's the same judge that gave her the plea deal, she was like, what are you doing?

Speaker: Just 89 months. Go away. Like, which is also a very light sentence for child sexual assault. um two times How many years is that? Six, I think.

Speaker: Six-ish. So... Oh, and by the way, she's also pregnant again. How old first Second time by Vili. At this point, the baby is like two.

Speaker: So it's not funny. So she gets six months. She gets out. She's only out for a couple months. She already gets pregnant. She gets pregnant for a second time. She gets sent to prison, has the baby in prison.

Speaker: So now they have two kids together. And ah she's she serves her sentence. She gets out. And when she gets out, Vili is officially 21 years old.

Speaker: Vili and her have still been in contact. Well, they haven't been legally, but allegedly they'd still be in been in contact. And when she gets out in 2004, since he's 21, he goes to court to have the no contact order lifted so that they can be together.

Speaker: And what's even crazier is that his mother was like pro this. What? She's like, you can't, you shouldn't penalize my grandchildren because they're, because this is love. Like she was pro, she said, Mary, you know, paid her debt to to to society. And if her son wants to be with her, he should be able to.

Speaker: So the courts are saying, man, this guy's 21. They can get together. So they lift the no contact order. In May 2005, Letourneau and Villy are married.

Speaker: Highly public marriage. God.

Speaker: Villy is at this time working as a DJ and the couple are raising their two daughters, Audrey and Georgia together. And they end up staying together for 14 of marriage. 14? 14 years. fourteen fourteen years um so So she's known him since he was eight years old?

Speaker: Yes. They've been together since he was 12. Ugh. ah Jessie, I can't. That's so gross. Yes. After 14 years of marriage, though, it was clear that something or something deteriorated because in 2019, Villy legally filed for separation.

Speaker: and i think that's when I heard about this case come back up. Yeah. like Yeah. Yeah, he filed for separation. They never fully got divorced, but he did file for separation. He moved to California. um and But shortly after he moves to California, they get separated. Letourneau is diagnosed with stage four colon cancer.

Speaker: The first person she calls is Billy saying, hey, like you're my person. i would love it if you could come up here. And he actually comes back up and becomes her full time caregiver and cares her for her until she passed away in July 2020 at the age of 58. Oh, my God.

Speaker: She also left the majority of her estate to him and It's very clear when you watch videos after the fact. like i just He was on Dr. Oz, which is a weird show for him to be on, but that's fine. He is very emotional. And you can tell that he loved her very much.

Speaker: And he also was like in this interview stating how much... she meant to him and and he doesn't, he doesn't blame his like depression and drug use or anything on her. It really was that they had a love story. They were very much in love and that the media saying how disgusting it was for them to be together really was like what led to their ultimate separation, um like 14 years later.

Speaker: But as of today, yeah, I don't know. As of today, Vili is maintains a pretty quiet and private life. He doesn't want to be in the public spotlight. He is a father to three daughters. So he had ah a third daughter um who wasn't with, it wasn't with Letourneau, it was with somebody else. And so he's raising his two daughters. One of his daughters just well ah gave him a granddaughter. So they're all kind of together.

Speaker: But that is the end of my story for you. That is wild. i'm I'm looking at photos of them now and it I don't know. Something about it is so eerie because especially when he's older, they like it doesn't look like there's an age gap. Like he looks older for his age. She looks young for hers. Like if you just looked from the outside, they look like this like nice couple, this happy family.

Speaker: and you wouldn't just wouldn't know that he's was groomed by her essentially. So you should watch some of the pictures I think are heavily edited because some of I did watch.

Speaker: She does look great for her age. I will say she is a very beautiful woman. Yeah. She's gorgeous. I will say he also i don't want to say he looks old for his age, but he does look pretty mature. but when she was like the last video that they did with some Australian network, she, she looks not old, but, but there's a clear difference between their ages in that particular video. Also, she acts, she's, she, she acts pretty bizarre, very bizarre. Ah, oh yes. But she did have like the full support of his family that once she got out of prison the last time, like they, the family just open arms,

Speaker: was okay with it. That makes no sense to me. i don't i don't, it doesn't, it doesn't, but I'm also like, I mean, 14 years is not an insignificant amount of time to be with someone. Yeah.

Speaker: I don't know. It's just, it's, I just remember this case in particular, like gripping, gripping society. And in fact, a lot of the resources I found were like people magazine and those kinds of, do you remember when people and all that used to be like very big source of, yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: um just It's very uncomfortable. like Clearly there was some love there, but it's also like, okay, how much of that is love and how much of that is you guys like trying to force it because of all this negative press and you're like, no, we need to prove yeah something.

Speaker: ah I mean, I know that there are relationships with large age differences that work, but wait until you're both adults. There's no reason to have that kind of contact with a child.

Speaker: That's disgusting. I don't know. At 34,

Speaker: At 34, I look at boys that are 12 and they smell. They don't take care of themselves. they're They're wildly immature. Like, ah like, how do you find? especially But then when I listen to her talk, she also has this like immaturity about her.

Speaker: But he's two, he's only two years older than her son. That's the weirdest part to me. Like, how do you not view this child as like an extension of your family or like another son something like that, you know?

Speaker: And I just want to know all those nights you were making dinner, were you trying to make like an extra special dinner? Cause he was there and you were like trying to like show off for your crush. Oh, i don't put that thought on my head. Can you imagine being the husband where like she's been playing in your face this whole time and she's actually been like wildly inappropriate with a 12-year-old?

Speaker: Can you imagine her kids like having to go to school after that? There was a couple pictures of her with her original four children like visiting her while she was in prison.

Speaker: So I'm guessing... i don't know what that has to be like. i That would be... I think both Mary Kay and Steve, the the only thing that they really agreed on throughout this whole debacle was that their kids shouldn't be here. So they did send their kids originally to Washington, D.C. And then the father, Steve, eventually took them to Alaska so they could like stay out of the public eye.

Speaker: But it would be really difficult because this was everywhere. oh This was on. all Yeah. Yeah. Like, you're not getting away from it. Your kids are going to see this. Yeah, well, and you have the last name, Latorno. Like, no, it was, like, worldwide or s countrywide. It was. like it it was worldwide. Like, it it took... Because she... I think part of it is she's a very beautiful woman.

Speaker: She... And... I mean, a lot of times, I think you you think of teachers, like, teacher relationships that come out as, like, inappropriate are usually, like, a man and his students. Yeah. Or maybe we're just, like...

Speaker: primed to think that but I mean look at her father there was nothing that happened to him yeah and he had two kids with his student I don't know it's a weird it's a weird case i don't like it yeah well that's it that's it today guys that's it for today's dive into the dark corners of the Pacific Northwest if you love the stories or shivered a little be sure to subscribe and follow so you don't miss what's lurking beneath the evergreens next time Thanks for joining us on Beneath the Evergreens.
