A light just blinked at me twice. Now, Here is the complication. There are freaking wicked lightning bugs out right now up here this time of year.

And if you think you're so smart, oh, um I would immediately know a lightning bug from like a UFO. Yeah, you know what? They're all over the place. Some of them, my dad is an entomologist and he told me this means something, but I forget what.

Some fly low to the ground. Others fly high up at like above the treetops. I'm looking at one right now doing that. So, you know, against the dark sky, it's blinking. i mean, what, you know, it takes a minute sometimes.

so ah So I live in Boston, Massachusetts with my wife and our three-month-old daughter. And our landlord, we've been there five years.

Our landlord is suddenly trying to kick us out. Like, pronto. And we've tried to kind of negotiate. The guy lives upstairs. The guy lives there. He's met our baby.

Then, I'll tell you one more that they did. I'll tell you one more. They said that they were going to offer us a new lease starting in like a week. And they said um it was going to include a rent increase of, drumroll now,

And, you know, ah enough about that, but I will, I just want to say for anybody out there who is experiencing or has experienced, you know housing insecurity, and that is so many Americans, right? That's so many of us actually least experience housing insecurity so easily, you know?

um Anyway, I just want to say, boy, I feel for you. uh, I just hope you and i and all of us can do our best to use the resources available to us.

And often there are resources and that might include your community, your family, your friends who might even just have advice, you know, um, Yeah, hopefully we can all just ah do our best to protect our families and stand up for ourselves.

It's insane to me that we live in the richest country in the world and huge percent of us live with no real security in our housing.

Tenant Challenges in Massachusetts

you know what? Let me say one more thing about this. Let me just go on a little rant. Because I said I live in Massachusetts. And when you say you live in Massachusetts, people inevitably... Or at least, I don't know, maybe Massachusetts people, i don't know, go like, oh Massachusetts has really, really good land. Like, the law is really in favor of the tenants in Massachusetts.

Look... As I will explain it in a second, Massachusetts does have better than average ah tenant protections. But the idea is that like even in you know liberal Massachusetts, like, oh, the landlord can hardly do anything.

No, the landlord can raise your rent by $10 million every year. every year If he wants to. There's no restriction on that. he just One year, he has to you you get to pay whatever you had to pay when you signed the lease.

I don't know if you've heard this already, but the Wall Street Journal has put out, i think, still just one of ah an apparent series of articles sort of kind of trying to debunk the whole UFO thing. It's fascinating. I've got a lot to say about it.
