embark on an adventure with states of discovery where education and curiosity about the world collide.
00:00:23
Speaker
Welcome to the very first episode of States of Discovery, a brand new podcast by Only In Your State.

How 'States of Discovery' differs from previous podcasts

00:00:30
Speaker
You likely are already familiar with our podcast, Not Your Average Bucket List, which was all about uncovering hidden gems and unique places across the US. This podcast is going to be a bit different.

Hosts as learning companions

00:00:43
Speaker
Yeah, so going forward, together we're going to be learning companions, but also knowledge guides, so which I know, surprising, right? um But we're wanting to explore the nooks and crannies of a America through a myriad of topics. And you know whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or you just love a good story, I think we're going to have something special for you.
00:01:05
Speaker
I'm really excited about this particular show because ah Sarah and I are very much learners. We love to gain knowledge. We love to learn about things. And also, we love to share our knowledge. So essentially, Sarah, from your perspective, what do you think our listeners can expect from States of Discovery? Why should they tune in?

Topics of exploration

00:01:31
Speaker
Well, aside from our sparkling personalities, in each episode, we're going to focus on a different topic. So from van living to the best corn dogs in the United States to maybe the dangers of rip currents, we're going to be crafting a journey of discovery for our listeners. And so we're going to discuss history. We're going to feature interviews with locals and experts and just really so much more. We're going to bring an insider's perspective to these episodes
00:01:58
Speaker
as well as some fun trivia about really exciting state topics. And I don't know if I've talked about it before, but as someone on a high school trivia bowl, I'm pretty excited about that part. Excuse me? How have we gotten this move right past that? Okay, stay tuned for a whole episode about High School Trivia Bowl because, wow, I got to dive into

Journey to the Wisconsin State Fair

00:02:21
Speaker
that. ah but um So what's really exciting is we are officially kicking this show off with a bang. Our very first episode is a big one because Sarah and I are actually traveling to Wisconsin to participate in one of the coolest state fairs in the country, the Wisconsin State Fair.
00:02:41
Speaker
Oh my gosh, I cannot wait. We're going to be there in person to experience the fair firsthand. I don't know about you, but I've never been to a state fair. Never, ever in my life. Okay, yes even better. I'm so excited. um We're going to be interviewing locals and fair representatives and learning a ton with boots on the ground experiences and maybe winning some cool prizes. I don't know. I was, you know, I meant to ask you, I know we've talked about before roller coasters and all that fun stuff, but I'm assuming we're going to go on some rides, we're going to play some games, we're going to meet some locals, all the okay, cool. Excellent. Okay. I think what's really neat too about this particular episode about the state fair is that we're going to dive into a lot of quirky traditions that really make
00:03:30
Speaker
ah the state fairs across the US, so special. We also have a ton of fun facts that you might not know. For instance, I didn't know this one, but did you know that Wisconsin is home to the world's largest musky fish? No, no, really. Yeah. Yeah. And so what's cool is we're going to have a lot of, we're going to speak to a lot of locals in the agriculture division. They have bunny hopping, which is, I guess, a ah very cool contest that you have leashed bunnies hopping around, my gosh i'm so excited you know, parkour bunny style, uh, which I think is, yeah, very neat.
00:04:11
Speaker
Yeah, and also maybe that's not so surprising about the word world's largest musky because I know we did talk about sturgeon bay. Yeah. And sturgeons, which are giant. Yeah. Horrifying. I mean, that's just for me, but that's a personal take. don't don't you know Don't judge me on that. but In addition to that, like did you know that the Wisconsin State Fair is famous for its cream puffs? and Maybe I should say it's famous for cream puffs, capital C, capital P. It is a big deal. and I've never had a cream puff. also This is going to be so many firsts for me. I'm so excited. The cream puffs, that dates back to 1924. This year marks its centennial celebration.
00:04:57
Speaker
Yeah, that's wild. they have a they I read they have a cream puff pavilion, yeah which is like just imagine a thing of dreams. ah If you ever read that that book, Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs, I'm just picturing like one giant cream puff as a structure that you walk into and just scoop food out of. I will say if you're in the Milwaukee area, or if you're traveling to the Milwaukee area, you can come find us actually, because we're going to be near the Cream Puff Pavilion.

State fairs as cultural hubs

00:05:26
Speaker
I love that. Just a fun scavenger hunt if you're looking for only in your state. That would be great. Yes, memorize these faces. But also, I think what's really cool, the fairgrounds itself are home to the Milwaukee Mile, which is the oldest continuously operating speedway in the entire world.
00:05:44
Speaker
like How cool is that? I mean, so so many firsts, so many important things, so many cream puffs. And not only that, but you know I think this is a great way to really tee off this season for States of discussion Discovery because we're going to be taking you on a journey with us and it's going to be inspirational and educational And ah hopefully it inspires you to do the things we're talking about, like go to a state fair, go to the Wisconsin state fair. This is going to be so much fun. Yeah. And the fair. So we're going to have a whole episode about the fair. We're going to tell you everything. um But we're also going to be there for the beginning. It runs for two full weeks. So we're going to be there in the beginning. But you'll have plenty of time after the episode comes out to go. We haven't even been there yet. And we're already encouraging people. Go check it out. There's concerts. there's
00:06:36
Speaker
like these incredible foodie competitions that is like blowing my mind with these foods like these creations that chefs are coming out with to win an award and it's like the most random combinations but it's like delicious I don't yeah And I hope that your little vegan heart will find something to eat. Fingers crossed. So many potatoes. They're going to be a potato or two that you can partake in. Oh, for sure. anyway those ah What is it? The tornado potatoes? A little spiral. sparos Yes. Keeping my eye out for that.
00:07:09
Speaker
You should check out the 2024 Wisconsin State Fair schedule. You're not kidding. It is jam-packed and there's going to be like a lot of really cool people on the main stages, but there are so many stages throughout the fairgrounds that you're going to have so much to do. It's going to be great.

Mission to celebrate American diversity

00:07:24
Speaker
Yeah. That's the cool thing about a state fair is that not only is it a really good representation of culture for that particular state, but it's like nonstop itinerary of things to do. So even if you're just walking around with with no destination in mind, you're going to come across games and rides and yeah businesses and culture that's just like, you know, packed with Wisconsin fun. And on top of that, there's just like music and locals and community spirit families having fun. I mean, it's just, yeah, I'm really excited that this is our first episode for this particular show.
00:08:04
Speaker
Me too. I think it's a great way to to kick things off. And I think we're going to have a lot of fun. We're going to learn a lot. And I really do hope that it's going to inspire us for the rest of the season to maybe provide our listeners with something a little bit more to ah to chew on. Yeah, definitely. I do think, ah so States of Discovery, we're not throwing all travel out the window because that is the bulk of what we do here at Only In Your State. It's just basically states of so discovery is going to be about celebrating the richness and diversity of our country one story at a time. And ah we can't do it without our listeners input, their stories. We'd love to have people on. We're going to have interviews with experts.
00:08:46
Speaker
um all that fun stuff and so we would like to make sure that you subscribe to the podcast follow along whatever listening platform you prefer it's just going to be this really fun audio adventure that you know we hope to inspire people and teach them some new things but we're also going to be learning at the same time which i think is a lot of fun Yeah, and I'm glad you mentioned um you know interviewing experts, but also locals. So you know our first episode is all about Wisconsin and the Wisconsin State Fair. And I'm really hoping that we can chat to some of the fairgoers and locals and just learn more about this incredible state. And you know trust us, you don't want to miss it. So mark your calendars and get ready to discover the extraordinary and the ordinary and all in between with States of Discovery.
