Joel Embiid's Season-Ending Decision

00:00:00
Speaker
Joel Embiid is officially out for the entire season because of that lingering left knee issue and I think that's the best move right now for him in his career. Today I'm running my mouth about Embiid's past injuries, what this means for the 76ers and my predictions on what's next for Joel.

76ers' Struggles and Injury Challenges

00:00:33
Speaker
Let's start off the episode by just acknowledging that this season has been an absolute train wreck for the 76ers.
00:00:39
Speaker
They're currently sitting at 12th in the West with a record of 20 and 38. The two things, in my opinion, that have kind of thrown their season into a tailspin is Embiid's lingering injuries as well as Paul George's early preseason injury. They really didn't start off on a good foot. So to gain that momentum after this time, you start to gain those losses and continue to lose. Also, Embiid has been managing this knee injury all season. So this isn't something that just happened in a game and now the 76ers are having to adjust to something. No, Embiid has been with this injury going in and out of availability, saying he wasn't going to do back-to-backs and all these things, just on many restrictions because of this lingering

Should 76ers Rest Embiid for Future Stability?

injury. So at this point, I think it's good for the 76ers to just adjust
00:01:29
Speaker
cut the cord on it and decide what the next treatment steps are that are better for him to get more out of him in the future. There are 24 games left and the 76ers are not going to be contenders. So they might as well just let him rest, sit, get the treatment that he needs and reformulate a plan that's not centered around Embiid because they can't afford for these things to keep happening.

Embiid's Olympic Decision: Wise or Risky?

00:01:52
Speaker
My question is, why was he playing at the Olympics? He should have been shut down that time, got the surgery that he needed and came back after the all-star break of this year. We've seen what's happened with Jared Vanderbilt and people who are managing this and have to miss almost two seasons.
00:02:07
Speaker
But playing in the Olympics and then coming back injured just doesn't make any sense for

Embiid's Injury Timeline: A Persistent Plague

00:02:13
Speaker
me. But before I get ahead of myself, let's go through a timeline of Joel Embiid's injuries. I think that'll change your mind on a lot of this.
00:02:20
Speaker
All right let's talk about his rookie season. 2014 broke his foot, had to miss the entire rookie season. Finally debuted in 2016 and played 31 games, tore his meniscus, and was shut down for the season. 2017 left eye orbital fracture from an elbow to the face, had to miss some time leading up to the playoffs.
00:02:43
Speaker
2018, he missed a lot of games leading up to the playoffs because of left knee soreness. So again, this whole time he's managing this left knee issue. In the 2019 season, he had a left hand ligament tear as well as a shoulder sprain. 2020, he had a bone bruise from landing on a dunk and had to miss 10 games as well as missing games leading up to the playoffs because of a non-COVID illness.
00:03:09
Speaker
In the 2021 season, he fractured the other side of his face, his right eye, tried to play with a mask, but of course it still affected him. He also was playing through a torn ligament in his right thumb.
00:03:21
Speaker
In 2022, he sprained his right knee, missed game four of the playoffs, and was playing compromise moving forward throughout the rest of the series. And in 2023 season, torn left meniscus required a surgery. So we're talking about multiple surgeries for this same knee over and over

76ers' Rebuilding Strategy Without Embiid

00:03:39
Speaker
again. And I just broke that down to y'all.
00:03:41
Speaker
And now here we are in 2025 with this same injury. He's out for the season. Now, I'm not one to just throw people away because they're injured. No, I think he needs to get on some kind of treatment plan. We saw how long Lonzo Ball sat out, right?
00:03:58
Speaker
Do something like that because what's happening is the 76ers entire franchise is now tired, tied up in the saga of this knee. Very similar to the Kawhi Leonard situation where they just know that his knee is injured and they try to do what they can.
00:04:14
Speaker
But when you get down to the stretch and you need one of your best players for a playoff push, you're constantly behind because they're managing their issues.
00:04:27
Speaker
It's time for the 76ers to figure out a plan for their franchise moving forward that's not centered around

Who Can Lead 76ers' Future: Maxey or Oubre?

00:04:34
Speaker
Joel Embiid. And I think they've got a great core. Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain when he's back, he's also injured as a rookie in the his first season. I expect him to make a full recovery. I don't think he has the same back story with all of these injuries.
00:04:50
Speaker
But you got Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain. I think PG should stay put and just focus on the game. I think he can finish out his basketball days in Philly. He can be very effective there. Yabo Sele has been playing well. That was a great pickup for them.
00:05:05
Speaker
So things can be trending up for so of the 76ers, including Kelly Oubre. My bad. Forgot about him. He's been getting better every year. So things can be trending up, but I think it's just time for the 76ers to not let him be go, but figure out another option

Longer Recovery for Embiid: A Prudent Choice?

00:05:22
Speaker
one. Build out another way to to keep their offense and their defense effective when you're MVP, when you're past MVP candidate. is not available to contribute to the team. It's a lot.
00:05:36
Speaker
Let me know what y'all think in the comments. I don't think the man should retire, but he definitely should sit out as long as he need to. Maybe come back after All-Star break next season. Let me know what y'all think in the comments.
