NCAA and NBA Season Highlights

The NCAA champions have been crowned. For the first time in a very long time, I don't got to worry about the Lakers in the play-in. The hardest job in America right now is an NBA coach, and I've got some way too early WNBA draft

Speaker
March Madness was crazy, but it's finally come to an end. April showers bring May flowers, and we gonna see how the WNBA flourishes from some of the things that happened in April leading up into the beginning of the season in May.

00:01:02
Speaker
Let's jump into today's episode. Let's talk about the NCAA championship games. I've been going through my bracket on here. Y'all know it fell apart and it fell apart all the way into the end.
00:01:15
Speaker
I had South Carolina winning. I haven't even logged back into the app, y'all. That's how bad. Even my second chance bracket was wrong because I really thought the South Carolina girls were going to be able to pull it together and they just couldn't make it happen.
00:01:27
Speaker
Paige Beckers and the UConn Huskies. have won their thirteenth championship in school history. That's kind of insane. Gino has been doing his thing. Sarah Strong, Paige, and AZ Fudd were the big three that could not be stopped at all by SC.
00:01:47
Speaker
Unfortunately, we saw a lot of memes of Dawn Staley on the sidelines going crazy, and that was all of us. That was, luckily I ain't put no money on the game. I thought I was going to get in the prize picks and make a couple

Spotlight on Future WNBA Stars

00:01:57
Speaker
picks. I'm glad I didn't because the game did not turn out any way that I thought it would.
00:02:03
Speaker
The score was y'all. That's crazy, especially for South Carolina because they're not used to losing at all. But by a deficit like that, never.
00:02:14
Speaker
Sarah Strong had 24 points and 15 rebounds. I was just listening to Cheryl Swoops and Jordan Ligon talking about it on their podcast. And it's everybody think that Sarah is up next, man, for a freshman to be dropping that. I did think that um on on ah the South Carolina side, Joyce would have stepped up a little bit. They freshman would have.
00:02:35
Speaker
But the off offensive UConn was just too much for South Carolina. Everything was falling for the UConn Huskies. It's hard to play like that when it's so many rainmakers.
00:02:47
Speaker
AZ Fudd also scored 24 points and got most outstanding player for the entire tournament. Paige Becker gets to end her WNBA season. Paige Becker scores 17 points and gets to end her NCAA season on a high note.
00:03:04
Speaker
She was already projected to be the number one draft pick ever. pick in the upcoming WNBA draft. But man, this really is the cherry on top. We all were rooting for Paige because she's really had some hard times with the injury and they lost.
00:03:22
Speaker
So we wanted to see Paige get a ring before she left and we got it. So big shouts out to the UConn Huskies. And also they had a really sweet um thing for Gigi up there too, because this would have been her freshman season.
00:03:35
Speaker
And she was all about UConn. And it's just feels like the divine intervention that they will win this year.

NBA Playoffs and Lakers' Challenges

00:03:40
Speaker
Let's move on to the men's tournament. Now I'm to real. I didn't watch none of the games. I just watched de finish the last one.
00:03:45
Speaker
And you know why i watched it? Because I was on a plane and there was nothing else to watch. It it was a four-hour miserable ride. And I was like, you know what I'm going to I'm a pay for Wi-Fi and I'm a watch this men's game. it ended up being a really good game.
00:03:57
Speaker
The Florida Gators were taking on the Houston Cougars, and I was rooting for Houston. i had I didn't watch the games, but I knew the stories behind the teams. I have followed pretty much. You know sports in a style, how y'all probably watch sports, right? You know a little bit about it. You're trying to support, do your thing.
00:04:13
Speaker
Houston had it the whole game. I'm like, dang, Clayton Jr., everybody keep talking about him, but he really doing nothing here. What's happening? Houston just poorly executed the end. I've never seen a game so poorly executed at the end. Their coach was dumbfounded.
00:04:29
Speaker
And mind you, he like 71. Why would y'all lose? This man, done built this program. The the the practice footage dropped. These boys are dogs. And also, they were talking about how old they are. But in NCAA terms, listen, age ain't nothing but a number.
00:04:46
Speaker
Period. Houston should have won that game, but they just had poor execution, bad fouls, and missed so many shots. It's like... They were great defensively, but their offense just wasn't where it's at. The easy shots around the rim, the free throws. It's like, dude, you really needed every point to count in order to win, and they lost by such a close deficit.
00:05:06
Speaker
The game ended 65-63 in favor of the Florida Gators, and they are now national champions. The third in their program history. Now that March Madness has wrapped up, it's almost time for the playoffs, and usually at this point of the season, I don't pretty damn stressed because the Lakers in the play-in they battling for seventh or eighth seed or something crazy like that but this year we are comfortably chilling and there is like a four-way tie in the west for the fourth seed it's crazy I think last night Denver actually secured that but I'm excited that we already know that the playoffs are secured and we can just focus on enjoying great basketball
00:05:47
Speaker
One thing about, uh, the playoffs that I don't know how it's going to land is these problems with the refs. Okay. We saw last night in the rematch against OKC, the Lakers are playing OKC and Luca got tossed in the fourth quarter in a very close game for, um, allegedly cursing at the ref, but everybody on the court said he was chirping back at the fan. And even since then, the fan has come out and told exactly what he said.
00:06:16
Speaker
The refs at some point need to have some kind of accountability because this is making the game unbearable. The game was close the whole time. And after Luka got tossed, it was the Shea show because everybody was scared to foul. The game was already kind of off kilter then.
00:06:31
Speaker
So him hitting eight points for scoring an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter. like the refs handed y'all this game. Y'all was literally, Vanderbilt had them in the clamps, the whole team.
00:06:44
Speaker
So I'm just annoyed. I do get annoyed with how much Luka talks to the fans or the the the refs or whatever it is. But again, free speech for the the athletes. They should be able to trash talk and do all of that. But it just gets to a point where it's disruptive.
00:06:58
Speaker
Not saying this specific instance was Lucas fault, but at this point, they're targeting him and they're picking on him. So if you know that going into it, I just don't understand why you continue to egg on these people who are going to penalize your whole team and just not you.
00:07:14
Speaker
So we'll see how the Lakers are going to fare in the playoffs. I I think we're making it to the Western Conference Finals and the game that we saw last night with the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Los Angeles Lakers will be our Western Conference Finals matchup.
00:07:30
Speaker
ah but My bracket was pretty wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm right about that. And a lot of different sports analysts are saying that they are going to see that. But we will see. Excited for the playoffs to start in two more weeks. The Lakers are playing again tonight. They had a back to back win.
00:07:44
Speaker
But Luka will be home playing Dallas. I'll cover it in the next episode. Or, you know, if y'all are following and subscribing, I might drop an ad hoc episode just to talk about it depending on how exciting the game is.
00:07:57
Speaker
I'm hoping Luka drops 77 for his jersey number, but we shall see. The head coach of the Denver Nuggets, Mike Malone, has been terminated. And if you follow the show, you know I don't like Mike Malone.
00:08:09
Speaker
and And I don't believe he deserves this at all. To get your team to the playoffs, not one season, not two seasons, and then won a championship the first In franchise history and to be fired before the playoffs, there must have been something brewing in that locker room. There must have been something happening in the organization that we all have no idea about because I can't understand why any organization would terminate a coach so close to the playoffs.
00:08:37
Speaker
Are you going to do better without him? Is the team going to wrap it? Was he? Did he say something to Jokic? You trying to, I don't know. I feel like the the general public needs a better explanation because Mike Malone and their GM got fired. So it seems like they're cleaning house.
00:08:52
Speaker
But with the season so close to end, couldn't you wait until after

Coaching Changes in the NBA

00:08:56
Speaker
the playoffs? Like, why was this so pressing? I'm not sure, but it's hard to keep a job as an NBA coach. And Ty Lue was talking about it because a reporter asked him about it. And he said that coaches get paid the big bucks because they know that this is a job with high turnover.
00:09:14
Speaker
And if the team starts losing, it's your fault. You will be fired. So they know what risk they're going into. But that risk and that reward of winning It's actually better than the the fear of getting fired in the middle of the season or a team moving on from you. But I don't know what the Nuggets are going to do. In my opinion, this move, unless they start playing really good, Jamal mur Murray is also not playing ah right now coming off of, but I think he has an ankle injury.
00:09:41
Speaker
they this pretty much throws them out of playoff contention. The Clippers are probably going to pass them now that Mike Malone's coaching isn't present. He was holding the players accountable.
00:09:51
Speaker
And I think that's something that they're really going to miss. So I don't know what's in the cards for Denver, but Mike Malone, even though he's annoying and said a lot against the Lakers, he didn't deserve

WNBA Draft Prospects and Strategies

00:10:01
Speaker
this. Let me know what y'all think about the coaches and the high turnover rate in the NBA down in the comments.
00:10:07
Speaker
All y'all, let's go through the athletics mock draft, and I'm going to talk about whether I agree or disagree. Now, i could pick a lot of different sports outlets to look at, but the athletic is really, really accurate. Also, I know Sabrina over there, so...
00:10:23
Speaker
I know that there' there's accurate reporting and people who are actually watching women's basketball on there. it's It's my trusted source. So let's jump into it. Paige Becker's going to the Dallas Wings is absolutely going to happen.
00:10:35
Speaker
The Dallas Wings has ah have already sold out their season tickets for this year. And fans kind of knew that. Paige would be going there. Again, Kurt Miller, who used to be the coach of the Sparks, one of my favorite coaches. I really enjoy covering him for years. He's now the GM of the Dallas Wings.
00:10:54
Speaker
There's no way, no way they're not picking Paige first. I'm not sure how she's going play with Arike. They got a lot of different people on their squad. They did lose Sato to Phoenix, but I'm excited to see what the Dallas Wings are going to do. They're going to be a young team mixed with some veterans.
00:11:12
Speaker
um who Who else is there? Dijonette Carrington, Nelissa Smith. oh They got Ty Harris, too. So it's there's a lot of people there. I'm excited to see practically how this turns out for Dallas.
00:11:25
Speaker
They will have a new coach. They got a new GM and they got a whole bunch of players. So, of course, number one going to Dallas. The Seattle Storm have um are the second pick, Dominique Malonga.
00:11:38
Speaker
ah Sorry, lady. I am not familiar with your game, so we just going to trust them. Now, Sonia Citron going to the, um I want to call them the Wizards, but it's the Mystics. My bad, y'all.
00:11:48
Speaker
Sonia, they got three picks. So let's just talk about the Mystics. The Mystics be having all the picks and be fumbling all of the rookies. I don't know what they be doing, but they got the third and fourth pick.
00:11:59
Speaker
And then Kiki Iriafen from USC is slated to go to the Valkyrie. I think that's a good move for the Valkyrie because she is a Southern Californian. She played at Stanford. She played at USC. She's got a lot of fans here in California.
00:12:13
Speaker
So I think that would be good for their franchise to kind of bring over some of those fans to watch her as a freshman. And she can ball. She can ball. Come on, let's go. um, Sanaya Rivers to the Mystics.
00:12:26
Speaker
I, I, I'm not going to comment on the Mystics. I don't know their strategy. I'm not sure if they have a coach and GM, they fired all those people. Um, I need to really catch up on my Mystics, but my biggest thing with them is they always fumble it and end up at the bottom somehow. So we'll see how that goes.
00:12:39
Speaker
Number seven and eight pick go to the Connecticut sun. They need these players because they have let all their players go. They rebuild it. And now Marina Mabry has requested a trade. So they're going to lose, not Marina Mabry, I'm sorry. ah No, that is Marina Mabry. Yeah, because she went over there and then they lost everybody.
00:12:57
Speaker
Dewana Bonner is now in Indiana. Alyssa Thomas is now in Phoenix. So I'm excited to see how they rebuild their team with a new coach because their coach also went to to the Indiana Fever.
00:13:08
Speaker
Let's move on to the Sparks with the number nine pick, Serena Sundell. I would prefer that they pick Tahina Pow Pow. And I'm not sure if she actually declared for the draft yet, but we shouldn't let Pow Pow go to Chicago in the 10th spot because she can shoot lights out. We just lost Lexi Brown, which was another three-point shooter that we had that was kind of that spot-up shooter.
00:13:34
Speaker
And I think Tahina Pow Pow... would really fit in with the the Sparks' tempo, their pace, ah ah getting assists from Odyssey Sims, and all these different different scenarios and ways. I think we need a solid three-point shooter. We don't have Zia Cook.
00:13:50
Speaker
We don't have Lexi Brown. And those were the two that we kind of had in that the younger class who were percolated. So I'm excited to see how this is. Number 11 to the Minnesota Lynx, Georgia Amore and... um 12, Dallas got another pick.
00:14:05
Speaker
Rhea Marshall. Here's the thing. I want to see if these people, and it's so funny, Sabrina Merchant actually picked these. So I trust Sabrina, okay? I'm shocked she doesn't think Tahina Pop-Out should be picked first, but I would personally pick Tahina Pop-Out. That's the only disagreement I have with you, s Sabrina, is...
00:14:25
Speaker
Tahina Pau Pau needs to be in L.A. Her fan base is phenomenal. She's a perfect Hollywood kind of player. I'm excited to see Anissa Morrow take on a take on new roles in um Connecticut because she's been a leader for so long at LSU.
00:14:41
Speaker
And maybe she'll find her way back to playing with Angel Reese. back in Chicago. We'll see. That's ah that's another team that's rebuilding. So I'm excited about the draft. I will be here live for the draft right here on my YouTube channel. So make sure you like, share, subscribe, all the things, y'all.
