Angel McCoughtry, Hamby & Barker Interviews, ROY Race & NBA Finals Heat Check | The Post Up

The Post Up with DJ Tricey Trice
Avatar
15 Plays14 days ago

On this episode of The Post Up, I spent time with the legend Angel McCoughtry to talk about life after hoops and building media lanes for Black women.  I also sat down with Dearica Hamby for an exclusive interview about staying locked in when the season doesn’t start how you want it to — and had a real convo with Rookie Sarah Ashlee Barker about toughness, confidence, and making her mark in the league.

We’re breaking down why Kiki Iriafen is dominating the Rookie of the Year race, my Top 2 WNBA teams right now, and where things stand in the NBA Finals as it all starts to heat up.

📢 I’m also going LIVE next week with Nick Hamilton and Sabreena Merchant right here on YouTube. If you miss it, don’t worry — I’ll drop the full audio in the podcast feed too.

🎧 Like, comment, and subscribe — we’re running our mouths about everything that matters in hoops.

Introduction and Show Overview

00:00:00
Speaker
This is The Post Up with DJ Treacy Trece. I'm running my mouth on everything hot in sports, news, drama, and whatever is blowing up the timeline. Let's get into it.
00:00:14
Speaker
What's going on, y'all? It's DJ Treacy Trease, and welcome back to a brand new episode of The Post-Up. I know I'm in a different spot. That's because I am out in the streets this summertime, y'all. I am having a good time doing different things.
00:00:27
Speaker
So I'm just not at the crib right now. I'm at the studio in Fanity TV, where y'all see me do LA Sparks Weekly all the time. This background is one of the sets that they have. So if you are looking for a place to record your podcast, you know, hit up my homies at Infantity TV.

Running Events and Marathon Experiences

00:00:41
Speaker
Just to give you a quick life update, man, I've been going through so many good things, right? I got this Nike chain on. You see me laced out in Nike gear. I just ran a Nike After Dark Marathon, my first 13.1 in my life, y'all. And it was insane just to be for real.
00:00:57
Speaker
um The first 11 and a half miles i was cruising, I was running at a 15-mile pace, which I'm not ashamed about. If you ain't ever ran long distance or you ain't never put some miles together and kept your feet moving in continuous motion, especially in the streets,
00:01:13
Speaker
then you you you can't judge me with this. The time doesn't matter. The distance matters. And we were running through Englewood, which if you are from l L.A. or familiar with the landscape of L.A., I mean, it's so many hills.
00:01:24
Speaker
It's up, it's down. It was about 60 degrees outside. We started an hour late, so it's supposed to start at 6.30. It started at 7.30. So it's late at night. You're training for this running. I'm just proud of myself for finishing it. Nike gave us some cool chains instead of medals, which I've been rocking all week.
00:01:40
Speaker
I still got my running shoes on as well as I'm running a 5K this weekend. I don't know what's going on with me. It's not like I'm obsessed with running, but I signed up for all of these things thinking that they were at different times and they just were all together. So I will be running another 3.1 this weekend, hoping to PR myself. but That's just what's happening on a personal tip and why you don't see me in my studio.

LA Sparks Updates and Interviews

00:02:02
Speaker
The LA Sparks also play earlier tonight. I'm recording this tonight. It'll come out tomorrow, but ah it's Wednesday when I'm recording this. We just beat the Las Vegas Aces, so there's a lot of things going on.
00:02:14
Speaker
If you've been following my show, you know that the WNBA season is in full effect. In the first 14 days, we had about 9 to 11 games, not only just with the Sparks, but with all the WNBA teams that I'm recapping and giving you the power rankings on. So I got a lot going on with that.
00:02:32
Speaker
Um, on Thursday of this week, which is the day you'll be watching this, I will be live with Nick Hamilton from iHeart to talk about his WNBA playoff contenders. And Friday, I will be live with s Sabrina Merchant from The Athletic to talk about where the WNBA season is right now. She is one of the four, uh, the writers, the journalists who are in the forefront of WNBA predictions, things that are happening in W, um, player matchups, all the WNBA news. So I'll be asking her some good technical questions.
00:03:02
Speaker
So you might want to keep it locked right here on my YouTube channel where I am always running my mouth about sports. If this is your first time here, don't make it your last. Go ahead and hit subscribe and follow. Make sure you share this with one of your friends who love to talk about sports. I got everything sports news right here on my channel.
00:03:20
Speaker
Y'all, I can't make up some of the cool stuff that's been happening to me with the L.A. Sparks Weekly team. Just here recently, I promise you, this is how exactly how this story started, so I'm going to tell you how it happened.
00:03:31
Speaker
I'm riding down Crenshaw on a beautiful afternoon, going to pick up some pasta from this new fire pasta spot that I had picked up off DoorDash. Friends recommended it, highly recommended it. So I'm pulling in and I'm parking in my phone ring and it's a number that don't know. So I'm like, who is this? I answer. You know how to call, take a little bit to connect when you're doing the car play.
00:03:50
Speaker
So it took a little bit to connect and I'm like, who is this? She like, is this DJ? It's Angel. And I'm like, yo, Angel McCautry, WNBA legend, hit me up seven times all defensively.
00:04:01
Speaker
Team six-time WNBA All-Star, five-time WNBA first-team All-Selection, I believe. Those stats might be a little wrong, but um' they're mostly right. um So Angel McCautry, Atlanta Dream Legend, hit me up and wanted to come on the LA Sparks Weekly Show. She guested on the show. She spent the entire day with us as media.
00:04:19
Speaker
She got there before the game. I came to pick her up at the gate, got her her press pass. We talked a lot about her movie that she had going on, a lot of producer stuff, things that she had working on. And um honestly, I think y'all, we about to be friends. It's crazy how I asked just for more friends looking to expand my network and WNBA legends are on my phone. So keep it locked here. Me and Angel are actually planning a special vlog for the post-up.
00:04:46
Speaker
Next week, because I'm a regular person, right? Y'all see me, I hoop a little bit. I'm not no great hooper. I ain't even an LA fitness great hooper. For real, I'm recreationally hooping. So she is going to take me through what a real workout from a WNBA player who is looking to get back in the league. She is currently out of the league, but she is still a free agent. She can play for a WNBA team whenever that happens.
00:05:07
Speaker
So I'm personally excited. I haven't ever been through a WNBA workout, and I want to know what it's like to go through a WNBA workout. So big shout-outs out to Angel McCautry, friend of the show. Shout-outs out to everything that you did, sis, for LA Sparks Weekly and the things that we're going to do in the future. I'm excited for you to be on the post-up.

Game Analysis: LA Sparks vs. Atlanta Dream

00:05:25
Speaker
What's going on LA Sparks Weekly? You already know me as DJ Treacy Treese and today is a special ever episode of LA Sparks Weekly. The Sparks are playing Atlanta Dream and I have an Atlanta Dream legend, Angel McCauhtry with What up, what up?
00:05:37
Speaker
We here. What's up LA? Welcome to the show girl. Thanks so much for tapping in with us. Let's talk about the game a little bit. What are you seeing so far in the game that that stands out to you? um I think the Sparks are aggressive on offense.
00:05:50
Speaker
They just got to get a little more aggressive on the defensive end, talk a little bit more, and get some stops, and they can get rolling. There you go. How does it feel watching your Atlanta Dream play here in L.A.?
00:06:02
Speaker
I'm 50-50, you know, been an Atlanta dream for so long. And obviously I live here in l L.A. now, so I'm a fan of both. I love that you're a fan of both and women's basketball in general. We'll talk a little bit later after the game. But real quick, what's our prediction?
00:06:17
Speaker
Who do you think is going to be your player at a game? I'm like Azrae Stevens on the Sparks, and I think that she's a player of game.
00:06:28
Speaker
All right, all right. Hey, LA Sparks Weekly, you heard it here first. I didn't even talk to Angel. We on the same page. Azrae Stevens, we'll look out for it. Keep it locked here on LA Sparks Weekly. My l LA Sparks are looking good, y'all. A lot of people are saying that we are on the losing streak currently at 4-7, but that don't matter to me because I have toxic positivity.
00:06:49
Speaker
Again, D'Erika Hamby has been leading the charge. Kelsey Plum has also been having a phenomenal season so far. Honestly, it's Azarek. It's Kelsey Plum and it's D'Erika Hamby who are leading the charge for the LA Sparks.
00:07:01
Speaker
I had an opportunity to talk to D'Erika Hamby about where the season started and how she feels about refocusing. going drop that video right here. Let's check it out. What's going on LA Sparks Weekly? It's DJ Tracy Tracy. You already know I'm here with D'Erika Hamby. So D'Erika, the season hasn't started off like we thought it would start off. You talked about in the press conference. You're a vet here.
00:07:22
Speaker
Talk about how you refocus your mentality and continue to go on in the season. WHAT THINK ABOUT IT'S LONG SEASON. WE PLAY EVERY COUPLE DAYS RIGHT NOW. IT'S LIKE OUR FAVORITE CURRENTLY ON OUR ROSTER BUT IT'S THE SAME FOR OTHER TEAMS AS WELL. YOU HAVE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR OPPORTUNITIES.
00:07:37
Speaker
okay AND PLAYING AGAINST THE MERCURY TODAY, KALANI BROWN, THEY'VE GOT some NEW PEOPLE ON THE TEAM. elizabeth thomas is out but can you talk about how this team is a little bit different than any other matchups you've had um
00:07:50
Speaker
I would say they aren't like their roster is structured around like superstars, so to say. They have a ton of role players that are doing their job really well and taking advantage of their opportunities, just shooting open shots and feeding off of Alyssa and Tatu creating.
00:08:05
Speaker
So kind of similar to like the Minnesota offense, I think they're similar. Okay, and final question. Coach talked a lot about, like, getting the energy up and making sure that, you know, we start off early. Is that the game plan today? How's the locker room feeling? I mean, that's every game that is supposed to be the plan to have a sense urgency all four quarters, but especially start of the game, especially start of the third. So each game we're taking little bits and learning from it and just got to continue to put it together.
00:08:27
Speaker
Thank you so much for taking some time out. The one thing that I love about working with D'Erika Hamby is that, or not working with, but like covering D'Erika Hamby is she is so positive. She never gets too high, never gets too low. She always keeps her eye focused on the game.
00:08:42
Speaker
And it's just taking it one game at a time. She's that positive force, that motor that's always going to keep moving, even if the game is not going your way. So there'll be good days. There'll be bad days. but she is always going to give you her best 40 minutes when she is on the floor. So big shouts out to De'Arica Hamby for always just keeping the Sparks level, being that vet, being linked up with her old team aide, ah Kelsey Plum, who they won some championships with in Las Vegas with the Aces, and they're coming to rekindle the fire right here in l L.A.

Rookie Spotlight and Team Dynamics

00:09:13
Speaker
Another l L.A. player that I want to talk about and I had an opportunity to interview was Sarah Ashley Barker. She is a rookie um who has come out of Alabama.
00:09:24
Speaker
And she is playing lights out, y'all. She is aggressive. She got a black eye. She got thrown into the lineup a little bit quicker because Rekia Jackson and Ray Burrell were out at the same time. So we experienced hardship early.
00:09:36
Speaker
Sarah Ashley has waited for her number to be called. It has continued to perform. I am excited for this rookie to grow with the spark. She's very grounded. And just recently KP laced her out with some Sabrina's.
00:09:50
Speaker
She was talking about how hard it was to move from college to come to l LA training campus short. She's, she's doing all these things and she only had a couple of pair of shoes. Well, she leaned on her vet, Kelsey plum who called up Sabrina and ask you to send her some exclusive colorways of the s Sabrina's. Here's what Sarah Ashley had to say about that interaction with Kelsey plum.
00:10:11
Speaker
WE SEE YOU BE HANGING OUT WITH KP. SHE GOT YOU LACED WITH SOME SABRINAS. HOW ARE THOSE SHOES AND like HOW DOES IT FEEL TO now BE PLUGGED INTO THE W? yeah no IT FEELS AMAZING. I HAVE THE WHITE ONES ON. right now so I'M WEARING THEM TONIGHT. um yeah it's just awesome kpe's awesome just being able to have great bets YOU KNOW, THAT HELP LEAD ME and AND HELP, YOU KNOW, WANT ME TO GET BETTER AND and GIVE ME ANY ADVICE that THAT THEY'RE WILLING TO GIVE. BUT SHE'S ALSO JUST SUCH A GREAT PERSON AS WELL. SO IT'S NOT EVEN ABOUT THE BASKETBALL. IT'S it's JUST WHO SHE IS TOO. BUT THEN YOU TALK ABOUT OTHER VETS ON OUR TEAM LIKE D'ERICA, ZEE, LIKE, I MEAN, THEY'VE JUST BEEN JUST AS GREAT TOO. AND I'M JUST VERY BLESSED TO BE ON A TEAM THAT HAS SUCH GREAT VETS LIKE K.P., ZEE, AND D'ERICA.
00:10:53
Speaker
Awesome. l LA Sparks Weekly fans, you've heard it from the rook. We are talking WNBA power rankings. I'm going just be real with you. All the toxic positivity in the world couldn't keep me away from the truth that the Minnesota Lynx and the New York Liberty are more than likely going back to the finals again.
00:11:11
Speaker
That's saying that if their players aren't injured, if things don't go sideways, but I think new you i know the Lynx just got their first ale today.
00:11:23
Speaker
New York hasn't lost at all. Adding Natasha Cloud to that New York Liberty roster, I don't know why they would give up Sloot for Cloud. Cloud is like 1,000% more aggressive than Sloot on everything.
00:11:36
Speaker
Also, while I'm talking about Sloot, Prayers up for Courtney Vander Sloot of the Chicago Sky now. She just moved into their all-time scoring, um number one top spot there, but she tore her ACL. So big prayers out to Sloot.
00:11:50
Speaker
um Speedy recovery. I hope she gets to come back. I know she's at the tail end of her career, but we don't want to see people go out like that. But going back to the topic we were talking about, the Minnesota Lynx, the New York Liberty are strong. These are two teams that Didn't have a whole lot of roster turnover. They're coming back with the same aggression that they played with last year.
00:12:08
Speaker
I'm excited to see them play. I'm hoping some other team is that X factor, but it's looking like those teams are lights out, going to be the WNBA teams that are in the finals. Two early predictions. I'm going to ask s Sabrina Merchant about that as well as Nick Hamilton later on in my live streams this week on my channel.

NBA Finals and Social Media Engagement

00:12:26
Speaker
Finally, let's talk the MNBA. For those of y'all who are up on the social media term, that's just a regular NBA, but the girls call it the MNBA because we the W, so why y'all can't be the M?
00:12:40
Speaker
Anyway, the NBA Finals are heating up. Game three just ah concluded today, and the Oklahoma City Thunder are up to one against the Pacers. I still...
00:12:52
Speaker
I am believing what I believe about the Pacers. I think they're going to choke. I don't think they're gonna be able to close the deal. The Oklahoma City Thunder have been a better team this entire time. What a way for Shea Gildress Alexander to end his ah MVP run of a season with winning all of everything and capping it off with the NBA championship.
00:13:13
Speaker
I know my hometown, lot of everybody in Indianapolis is hoping that the Pacers will be able to close the deal, but I don't see it happening. I'm going to you call me here if you want to. I know. I should be ashamed because I'm from Indiana and I don't believe believe in the Pacers, but I'm not a ashamed.
00:13:28
Speaker
I don't care. I think the old Oklahoma City Thunder have earned it this entire season. This is their year, and this young team has grown together to create something special to bring Oklahoma City, their very first NBA title.
00:13:43
Speaker
Let me know what y'all think in the comments on that. I'm excited to see how my audience is divided on Pacers versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.
00:13:54
Speaker
