Introduction and Manager Series Conclusion

00:00:09
Zak
Hello and welcome to the Daily Southampton part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. I am your host, Zach and Goe Finch, and today I am joined by, as ever, my co-host Gregory Elliott. How you doing, mate?
00:00:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm doing good, mate. I'm doing very good.
00:00:25
Zak
Wonderful.

Sports Teams and Coaching Staff Choices

00:00:26
Zak
So, um obviously, my manager profile series is kind of dead in the water because we assigned a new manager.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:00:35
Zak
so
00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. It's a great episode to revisit. A big shout out to your Will Still profile, ah which was a fantastic learning experience for me. It got me excited and hopeful that he was our new manager.
00:00:46
Zak
Good.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And now here we are.
00:00:48
Zak
Good. I see it's doing bits, which is nice.

Paul Trollope's Career Overview

00:00:51
Zak
um So today I thought in lieu of the fact we have a new manager is that the way that sports is kind of doing things, as you probably noticed is via...
00:01:02
Zak
um ah sort of Rather than letting him bring in his own team, which he which is what usually a manager does, they're they're sort of doing interviews for the coaching staff. One of those interviews was for his assistant manager.
00:01:13
Zak
So rather than being a sort of known entity that you'd expect him to bring with himself, like a cost to a new job, ah instead we've ended up with ah Paul Trollope. Now, what do you know about him, Greg? Greg?
00:01:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know that he can his most recent job was at Luton, right?
00:01:30
Zak
Correct. He was a joint assistant manager at Luton, but we'll we'll get back to that.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Unfortunately, that ends the knowledge.
00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's as far as it goes.
00:01:37
Zak
That's not a bad thing.
00:01:39
Zak
It means that this episode is slightly more interesting for you. And so it's so it ah it's probably a bit longer, might be a longer one than I expected, mainly because there's there's a lot of information.
00:01:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't wait.
00:01:49
Zak
um Because ah Paul is 53, so he's been around in football a quite a long time. In contrast to a lot of the other both appointments and like signings we've sort of looked at and made, ah he's he's actually sort of ah and say an elder statesman, you know, we've still got people like paul like Neil Warnock knocking around, right? so But he's been in the game long enough to have the experience that will be useful in our upcoming season.
00:02:17
Zak
So he's nicknamed Trolls by some and was unfortunate enough to be born in Swindon. I'm not even going to pretend that's not a dig at Swindon. I hate your roundabouts. Uh-huh. ah to
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Magic Roundabout is an amazing play sack and it is the only interesting thing to do in Swindon so
00:02:30
Zak
ah hu
00:02:33
Zak
Uh-huh. He played as a midfielder and has been in the football, signing his first professional contract in 1989. So he was with Swindon Town before then, for two years as a trainee.
00:02:46
Zak
um Didn't really get a look in though, but made his first proper first team appearance in 1992, where he joined Torquay United on loan. Over three-year period on loan there and joining, he had 96 appearances, 16 goals, before eventually joining Derby on loan, making three appearances and scoring once.
00:03:09
Zak
He did eventually get a transfer to Derby, though, in 1995 until 1997, where he made appearances and two goals. He had two loan spells in 1996, though, which so I'm guessing is second season, where he went to both Grimsby and Crystal Palace.
00:03:26
Zak
And then 1997, he went over to Fulham. for what was probably the longest period of time he had in a job, when he was a player, where he played 78 times and scored five goals.
00:03:42
Zak
But that all ended in 2002, and he left for Coventry City, where he made six appearances, a very short-lived spell before moving to Northampton Town, where he ended up making 84 appearances, scoring eight goals, and leaving in 2004 to his final destination of his playing career,
00:03:58
Zak
which was Bristol Rovers, where he scored he scored twice in 30 appearances. So he's had a yeah had a pretty extensive playing career, right?
00:04:09
Zak
From 1992 right through to 2005. You know, that's thats pretty good running.
00:04:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
a lot of experience at the high maybe not all consistently at the highest level but at a high level
00:04:15
Zak
Yes, yes.
00:04:19
Zak
But also it's complete contrast to write like Will Steele, who has basically just been in coaching for a vast majority of his life and coached in completely different areas and coached in completely different places.
00:04:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:04:30
Zak
ah you know So you've you've got a lot of good experience there. from sort of And when we get into his managerial record, you'll start to understand probably why they've they've been quite happy to sort of bring him in.
00:04:42
Zak
But obviously, he he also managed a few international caps. I think he add he managed nine in total for Wales. So he is a Wales national player. And he goes on to later coach them. I'll talk about that slightly later. So very, very experienced player at lower

Trollope's Coaching Journey

00:04:57
Zak
leagues.
00:04:58
Zak
During his second season at Bristol Rovers, he actually took care took charge as caretaker manager, which is what started his managerial career.
00:05:09
Zak
ah He was made first team coach in November 2025 2025 alongside a director of football. So he's also literally worked in the same sort of style of things that we do from an early age. Because obviously, bear in mind, there's always a debate whether or not a director of football is needed.
00:05:28
Zak
And he was there from 2005 through to 2011. So he had long time Bristol Rovers took charge of 275 matches over six-year period. He won 104 games. drew 63 and 108. So averaged 1.36 points game during this short stint.
00:05:41
Zak
over that six year period he won a hundred and four games he drew sixty three and lost a hundred and eight so he averaged um well sorry a averaged one point three six points ah game during this shortte um However, he was eventually let go in December 2010 as Bristol Rovers were in the League One relegation zone.
00:05:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Quite impressive.
00:06:05
Zak
But we'll get into what refer to as the Chris Hewton part of his career. After a word from our partners at Bionique.
00:06:56
Zak
And we are back. Right, Greg, check-in time. So, how do you feel? Because obviously, what you've learned now is he has quite an extensive period as a player. He also managed, you know, five or six years at one club as a manager, which is almost unheard of in this day and age. um A bit more normalised, sort of, at the time.
00:07:15
Zak
But yeah, I kind of think that it's crazy for someone to have that level of stability anywhere, quite frankly.
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:07:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's good. It's a good sign. And it you know it should ease the concerns of anyone saying ah that Will Steele is inexperienced or too young or has no experience in the English game.
00:07:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because now he has that wealth of experience to lean on and to sort of meld with. And I know we were saying at the start that it's sort of unusual for a manager not to bring in his own sort of coaching team, but let's not forget realistically that, you know, a large part of Will Steele's coaching team at his former club were his brothers.
00:07:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's not it's not coming at it from the same mentality of building up a... a team of varying experience that can help put the pieces together.
00:08:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, if Spores wants to create the, you know, the Avengers of the coaching world for football, great, let's do it.
00:08:16
Zak
Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at. and like we we had it We've had it where a manager brings in his entire team and they're all stuck rigidly to one type of football and refuse to move. And there was no sort of word in the year that maybe it's not the right thing to do or anything like that. or and And we've seen how it ends up, and I think that this is one of the reasons why they kind of want to avoid that going forward. And I'm kind of all right with that. Or alternatively, if things don't work out or somebody gets poached or anything like that happens, it won't result in the entire sort of deck of house of cards collapsing, right?
00:08:50
Zak
Because that is also a big fear. And we already had that happen with our previous director of football, right? So, yeah, I can understand why
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly. And and you you you know you pointed out his lengthy tenure at a single location. um you know that's That's two sides of that coin.
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not only is that that he's doing a good enough job to remain in that position, that's showing loyalty and not using it as a stepping stone onto greater things.
00:09:16
Zak
Mm-hmm.
00:09:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you know there's there's every possibility that that might be how we'll still see Southamptons. And don't know if anyone would potentially blame him for that when you look at some of our past track

Coaching Successes and Agency

00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
records. I mean, all of our managers in the previous season are in the Champions League. And, you know, Pochettino, Koeman, their introduction to the managerial world of the English game was through us. So that's a positive in the line of his attitude for me.
00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know not' not saying that we're still is going to abandon shit immediately but it's is coming together as you know completing the the pieces of the puzzle that we want right
00:10:00
Zak
Yeah. Right. So getting back to it, oh we we now join ah Trolls, so as he likes to be called, or at least he's been nicknamed, on his return to management.
00:10:13
Zak
And this time he returns as an assistant. So he you know that that also shows sort of the level of adaptability and not having a level of arrogance to understand when you want to be in charge of a football club, when you want to help one out, right? Like a lot, you don't usually see that when someone's been an assistant, they struggle to go back, right?
00:10:32
Zak
Thinking of certain of Mr. Roll. Don't want to upset too many people there, but like, you know, sometimes it's okay to accept that.
00:10:41
Zak
ah different type of job and it's not necessarily a step down when you can provide something that that person needs so he joined him a championship club Birmingham City in July 2011
00:10:54
Zak
And when Hewton left for Norwich at the end of that season June 2012, he also went with him. So on that, not using it as a stepping stone, yes and no, but I feel like this is more that he was becoming an established piece of staff with Chris Hewton.
00:11:12
Zak
So obviously when he got sort moved, he moved with him.
00:11:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, this becomes, as we head more into the era where managers take their staff with them,
00:11:19
Zak
Correct. So he stayed with him until 2014 and he left when Hewton was dismissed from Norwich in July 2014. Had a bit of a break, you know, sort of your standard six months, but in February 2015,
00:11:36
Zak
He went on to join Cardiff City as an assistant to Russell Slade. And it was around that time as well, he also took up a role coaching with the Wales national team, which I think is interesting because that shows that he's also got not only international experience, but international coaching experience, as well as coaching at lower leagues.
00:11:56
Zak
as well as coaching at higher leagues and sort of, you know, being there when sort of promotions of stuff have happened. So i thought that was sort of interesting. He then um got the role of man as manager, succeeding Russell Slade, because Russell Slade eventually moved into the head of football role.
00:12:16
Zak
um He was there for two weeks, though. So, his second spell of management wasn't really too good, though. He managed 12 full games in charge of Cardiff City.
00:12:27
Zak
He lost 8, drew 8 and won 2. So, sorry. was October 2016. lost eight drew to one two and was dismissed in october twenty sixteenth
00:12:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that's better odd statistics than hu either of our managers last season.
00:12:39
Zak
so
00:12:43
Zak
but This is also true, um but it's one of those things where also it shows you sort of the harsh reality of how football can be. But also the fact that, like, it's kind of bad that we kept the manager for so long. When we look at that, and you're like, yeah, those are pretty bad stats. We're like, wait, both of our managers only had a win under their belt.
00:13:01
Zak
Like a singular win.
00:13:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:03
Zak
It's very, very depressing. So obviously in November, but he did what he was always going to do, which is go back to Chris Hewitt. And he joined him as a assistant manager of Brighton in November 2016.
00:13:16
Zak
And that is where he remained um until May 2019, where he also departed alongside Hewton after he was dismissed from the role and joined him again for his next role at Nottingham Forest in October 2020. So we're catching up real quick, Greg.
00:13:33
Zak
with sort of where we are today. And it's it's, it's kind of crazy that obviously all of this happened over that sort of 10 year period, but he went over to Brighton during a a good time to be at Brighton. Uh, and then obviously once he was left, obviously I said, joined Nottingham forest alongside Hewton.
00:13:50
Zak
Um, But he was dismissed from his role in October 2020 alongside his boss after Forrest managed one point in their first seven matches of the twenty one twenty two season, which wasn't ideal.
00:14:05
Zak
um So, you know, managed sort of a season there, but the beginning of the next season took a bit of a tumble, which seemed to sort of be what was happening with Hewton a little bit. And then obviously that led him to his break. He took a little bit a break again, but this is the role he was in before he's gone on to join us, which you said you knew him from, which is Luton Town.
00:14:29
Zak
So he joined Luton Town in November, 2022, joining former Wales teammate, Rob Edwards, on she as you, as you probably aware of who Rob Edwards is at this point in the role of joint assistant manager, which is a strange role that I've never really heard of before, yeah,
00:14:44
Zak
Hey, it worked out pretty well for them. Alongside Richie Kyle. He was at lo Luton right up until January this year, ah where obviously he left after taking over as caretaker manager for, I want to say, four days after Rob Edwards was dis dismissed.
00:15:01
Zak
He was in charge of one game, which he lost. But let's face it, we've seen what happened with Luton.
00:15:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well...
00:15:07
Zak
It's not really...
00:15:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Fascinating that he was in at Luton at such an up and down time, right?
00:15:08
Zak
Yeah.
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he was there for the promotion and the Premier League season where they gave it good go and then for most of the downfall last season, so...
00:15:13
Zak
Yes.
00:15:23
Zak
So he was with Luton and Brighton as they got promoted.
00:15:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Awesome.
00:15:26
Zak
Now, obviously, one of those teams' fortunes have ended up being far more successful than the others, but ah he was quoted by Luton as actually helping mastermind their promotion to the Premier League in 2023 alongside his counterpart, Richie Kywell.
00:15:43
Zak
So... you know that Obviously, no club's going to speak ill when anybody leaves them. They're always going to speak nicely. um But you don't have to say those things. You've seen it before where people have fallen out and they just say, this person has departed.
00:15:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's high praise.
00:15:57
Zak
yeah.
00:15:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, that's high praise. High praise. ah For a big like historical promotion in that club's history as well, right?
00:16:01
Zak
so
00:16:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's not like not a small feat.
00:16:05
Zak
yeah
00:16:08
Zak
No, getting getting looted to the Premier League. you know we We all kind of thought it was crazy. And as we pointed out, when Nathan Jones disappeared and we didn't really expect him to expect them to come back, right ah he dragged along James Bree to the Premier League.
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah know
00:16:25
Zak
And then James Priest saw the championship the year that Newton didn't. So I think, you know, you've been to their stadium. You've seen how small the town is realistically in comparison. i think that, you know, regardless of the position there and now, it required must have required something special.
00:16:41
Zak
And now part of that something special is going to be joining us with significantly more resources um and, you know, trying to create a newer team.
00:16:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:16:51
Zak
So I've got some other points and some bits and pieces, which I'll talk about.

Strategic Team Building in Football

00:16:55
Zak
After a word from our partners at Zencaster.
00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network

Global Sports Podcast Network
If you're ready to tell your story, check out the link in the show description to learn more about Zencastr.
00:17:23
Zak
Thank you, Greg. So we are back. And one of the things I always want to talk about, Greg, as you know, one of my weird favourite fun facts is to dig into what agency they're part of.
00:17:36
Zak
And this one this one doesn't disappoint.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:17:38
Zak
So he is part of Distinct Football. That's the of the agency. ah They are yeah not a big agency, Greg. um They previously had Liam Rossini, manager who we've done a profile as well, when he was playing.
00:17:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
it Okay.
00:17:55
Zak
So not now, but when he was playing. As a player, they had him.
00:17:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Interesting.
00:17:59
Zak
They currently only have one player that isn't retired, and that's Julien Yan, who plays for Shanghai Port. So a Chinese national player.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:18:08
Zak
So, yeah, exactly. Stay with me here because it gets weirder. Coaches-wise, one of which is Ian Walker. He is a goalkeeper coach at Shanghai Port. So I think where he's employed there, you know, that explains why, you know, there's another player who's part of this.
00:18:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:25
Zak
And then Kit Simmons is another coach from the Welsh national team who was at one point a coach for Hebei FC. within So within the Chinese League again, and the only other person that's part of this network is a guy called Damien Matthew, ah who was most recently the assistant manager to Michael Bielup Rangers in 2022.
00:18:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:18:48
Zak
So I have feeling ah had a feeling there that it's like his mate who worked at like the Welsh National League was like, yeah, I've got a pretty good agency. And he signed up with them.
00:19:00
Zak
But the agency doesn't really seem to like be huge. And for some reason has a really distinct presence in China. So maybe at one point it was bigger. But the fact that its list has players that played previously...
00:19:12
Zak
slightly bizarre. It's a strange one. It's not like all the other ones. I was really hoping we'd have some weird, tenuous connections like we usually do, but no.
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:20
Zak
i actually even, i ended up looking them up um because I was that convinced that this is some sort of scam. But they are registered with and the company's house since 1985. Distinct Football Limited is a real company led by Oriol Palladino since 1985.
00:19:37
Zak
There is a website for distinct management ah which also has like, I want to say like sports personalities. You go onto the website, Greg, and there's a splash screen, right? That shows the logo.
00:19:49
Zak
And the only thing on the, on the website is, a is a button for email and you click that and it's like contact them about joining the network. Absolutely nothing.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sounds like 1985 company to me, right?
00:19:58
Zak
I've seen, Right, is that it sounds like someone said we needed a website, so they spun up a website in 1990, and they just keep rebranding the same website with a slightly better homepage every year since then.
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great. Yeah. That's fine. i mean I mean, as a semi successful assistant manager at this level and moving up and successful promotions.
00:20:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is a big agency really what you require? Probably not. So I'm sure it does the job.
00:20:27
Zak
No, probably not. as As I said, it kills off the fun part where you can get really tenuous links to like a Saints under-21 player from 20 years ago. ah you know or like or like how it's the you know the Echo literally managed to make an article about Aldi Mohamed moving to the UAE team because Gabby Adini's there.
00:20:46
Zak
LAUGHTER but Like that's that's a whole article because of the fact that they finished they tie those two little links together. ah But for me, obviously, like, you know, as as disappointing as that that was or the rabbit hole I fell into when I started to try to figure out how many of these companies are real.
00:20:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Look.
00:21:02
Zak
So the episode for itself for another time, it's something that whilst it might not be flashy and it might be the most exciting thing in the world, it shows you that they are trying to build something.
00:21:13
Zak
And I think that that is the most important thing.
00:21:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:21:15
Zak
And that is what we need and stability and like laying the groundwork.
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
look
00:21:19
Zak
And there is a lot of effort and work going into who is being chosen, the reasons they're being chosen. It it isn't a scattergun approach. It's not let's call up our mate that we had in our book, who's also from the same country as us, who probably could do a job here.
00:21:35
Zak
And that's what happened.
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Last year, last season, we were calling out for football brains and football experience.
00:21:35
Zak
We saw what happened with that.
00:21:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the fact that you have filled 23 minutes of this episode with this man's ah playing and professional managing history.
00:21:50
Zak
Basically just how he's played and just what he's managed.
00:21:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
shows that this man is football through and through ah if you don't get more of a footballing brain, right? say
00:22:01
Zak
That's the thing.
