Defining a Solopreneur
00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solopreneur, you might ask? A solopreneur is a new breed of solopro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery, and you are about to become one. What's going on, solopreneurs? Today, we're going to be talking about the importance of the process.
The Sales Process and Perseverance
00:00:46
Speaker
Most reps overestimate what they can accomplish in a year and underestimate what they can accomplish in five. You've probably heard that before. We're going to dive deep on that today. Welcome to the podcast. My name is Taylor Armstrong. We're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and have a much better time in the solar industry. Hope you're doing awesome and gearing up for the summer. Hope you're building some massive momentum wherever you may be right now. We are tuning in. My ah kid broke and the mic I usually use. We're using the handheld mic today. so hopefully there's not a massive difference in the sound quality.
00:01:19
Speaker
But we're still coming at you No excuses. And even though my kid, you know, got the mic here, he broke. ah throws it around, breaks it, still got to show up. And so today just wanted to do this podcast. I've been re-listening to um John Maxwell's book, 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Definitely recommend it. He's got to update a version that has a lot of you know modern ah scenarios, a lot of applicable things that we've all gone through. So ah go check out that book if you want to dive even deeper on this. I was listening to this chapter, I believe it's chapter...
00:01:54
Speaker
Three. Let's see. The law of process is chapter three. And he states the key message of it is leadership develops daily and not in
Lessons from Teddy Roosevelt
00:02:04
Speaker
a day. So such a powerful principle because there are so many people that give up in solar before they've gone through the process.
00:02:12
Speaker
We've all heard trust the process. You got to pay your dues. You got to show up. But are you actually doing this as it relates to leadership, as it relates to your solar cells ability? So I want you to listen the story of Teddy Roosevelt. He talks about Roosevelt in this book. Pretty cool. I actually never heard about this. But ah you think of Teddy Roosevelt when he was a president.
00:02:34
Speaker
um He's known as one of the ah best presidents ever. Right. And he's known one as someone that was just, ah you know, John Maxwell tells the story of he brought in some dignitary from some other country, was taking him out horseback riding. And then there was a place they couldn't cross. It's like a river or something. And he pulls this dignitary off and he's like, we're swimming across the river.
00:02:56
Speaker
And you just think of this guy that's just wild. um He's present. He's an older guy at that point. And he's swimming across rivers trying to get dignitaries to do the same. But what you didn't know about this guy, at least I didn't, is that when ah Teddy Roosevelt was a kid, he was just a sick kid.
00:03:14
Speaker
He was sick all the time. he had severe asthma. He was ah physically frail, was just a little pipsqueak to transform into the president, into someone that was, you know, there's stories of him boxing, wrestling, just a beast of a guy physically. What Teddy Roosevelt did, he decided he was going to transform himself from this frail little kid and he was going to manifest what he wanted to become. he ended up being all the things that his dad said he wasn't. is um You know, the story goes, his dad would tell him growing up, you have the mind being out of the body.
00:03:46
Speaker
And, you know, hearing that from from your parents probably a tough thing to hear. And so um just a pretty cool story. Maxwell tells in the book of how he challenged himself. He started lifting the weights.
00:03:58
Speaker
He started exercising, boxing,
The Importance of Continuous Learning
00:04:01
Speaker
all this stuff. And he became example of an outdoorsman, a soldier, governor, all those things. Extremely powerful president. And so we can apply that in today's solar cells environment because a lot of us listening, we haven't hit our potential. We haven't reached what we are meant to become. And the way we do that is we follow the law of the process. And especially as it relates to leadership, the second you stop learning, you start digressing. There is something I learned from Taylor McCarthy. There is no
00:04:33
Speaker
staying level, right? You're either improving or you're getting worse. And so especially as it relates to leadership, if you are leading reps and they don't see you constantly trying to make improvements, if you think you've hit a a cap in what you can learn, if you think you've arrived, that's when you start digressing. Because in this job, there's no arrival point. The best leaders, it doesn't matter how much they know, it doesn't matter how many cells they've glows that doesn't not matter how many recruits they've got under them, they're always learning.
00:05:02
Speaker
And if you are trying to lead an organization, and your reps, the people that follow you see that you've stopped learning that you stopped trying, which I think they can find out pretty quick. You I've heard stories of teams where you get these regional managers, they don't even sell themselves anymore. And they come in and try to run trainings and inspire
Leadership Through Example
00:05:20
Speaker
people. I think people can see through that, right? People can notice when you stop learning, when you stop the law of process. So something you should ask yourself this week, what process are you following to uplevel your solar cell skills? What process are you following to uplevel your leadership skills?
00:05:38
Speaker
Are you showing up? Are you learning every day? Are you someone that you're trying to lead others even when you don't when you don't have a title? And maybe you're not even a manager yet.
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
00:05:49
Speaker
But if you try to show up and follow the process, trust the law of the process, and do the things before maybe you've arrived, then that's when you're going to see more growth than any other time. you know, I was just doing a podcast today, where it'll be, it's going to be ah published soon with ah my buddy,
00:06:08
Speaker
and Jonathan, it's the Go Green podcast and go check it out. But ah yeah, he was he was asking me what's contributed to my growth and leadership, and just growth in solar cells. And that's one of the biggest points you guys will hear it.
00:06:22
Speaker
Most of podcasts when it's released. Yeah, I mentioned that podcast, that's one of the biggest contributors that I've seen in my success is just doing the thing before I arrived. Before I started doing this podcast,
00:06:35
Speaker
I hated being on camera. I hated recording myself, but I showed up, did it anyways. I'm not the one that's the most qualified to record a podcast. There's people that have closed more deals than me. There's people that have grown much larger organizations.
00:06:48
Speaker
So what right do I have to be recording a podcast? I can easily justify things. And I think we all do that. We all get the imposter syndrome. But the point is, are we following our own process? Are we going are we doing the hard things?
00:07:02
Speaker
Are we doing the things that that voice in our head tells us not to do and we do it anyways? Because if you are, and then you're probably taking a step in the right direction. So ask yourself this week, what have you done to improve your process? Are you following this law of the process in your leadership in developing your sales abilities?
00:07:20
Speaker
And what can you do to help up level yourself this week, this month, this quarter? How can you have a better process to always be
Engaging the Audience
00:07:28
Speaker
improved? So I challenge you guys to think about that today. go check out that book if you want to dive a little bit deeper. But just got me thinking as I was listening to that one of my favorites, Laws of Leadership. So we'll probably go through through some of the other ones. Go check out the book.

00:07:58
Speaker
So hope you crush it this week. I love you. and we'll see you on the next episode. So some of you already know that I run my own door-to-door sales team here in San Diego. And as we are gearing up for the summer, I realized if we do the same thing we always did, we're going to get the same results. But if I want to increase my deal flow, I need to do something different to get an advantage. Then we discovered an app called Solar Scout.
00:08:21
Speaker
But it's not a door-knocking app. It's a data platform that shows us who is likely to go solar in our market. It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later canceled the deal, who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood.
00:08:37
Speaker
It's been working for a lot of teams across the country and now I'm on board too. I'm going to be one of the first to use SolarScout in San Diego so I decided to partner up. But I told them, hey, I'm going to talk about SolarScout on my show, you need to give my listeners a great deal. And they did.
