Taylor's transformation from $50 to 150 deals

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.

Podcast's mission for solar professionals

00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you how to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro and closing more deals.

00:00:33
Speaker
A Solarpreneur is a new breed of Solar Pro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one.

Teamwork story: Wife's cleaning competition

00:02:13
Speaker
So we're going to jump in to the episode and I've got something, a little tool I've been using.
00:02:18
Speaker
I actually just started it the past couple weeks and it has been just a game changer in my productivity.
00:02:25
Speaker
So we're going to be talking about that tool.
00:02:27
Speaker
If you struggle with being productive,
00:02:29
Speaker
Okay, this can apply on the doors or even just as you're doing follow-ups in the morning or whatever you're doing in your business, even just being productive, doing stuff around the house.
00:02:40
Speaker
Maybe you're trying to read your, I don't know, self-development book, your Think and Grow Rich, your Psychology of Selling by Brian Tracy, your Closer Survival Guide, whatever book you're reading.
00:02:53
Speaker
Maybe you struggle with
00:02:54
Speaker
just going through routines.
00:02:56
Speaker
If any of that is tough, or if you have ADD like myself, then this episode, this tool is going to be for you.
00:03:03
Speaker
It's going to help you tremendously, help me a ton.
00:03:06
Speaker
So I'm going to tell you about it.
00:03:07
Speaker
But before we get into that tool, I'm going to
00:03:11
Speaker
I just want to tell a little story.
00:03:12
Speaker
Don't worry, this story has to do with the tool that I'm about to drop to y'all here.
00:03:18
Speaker
But the story is this.
00:03:20
Speaker
I was out knocking today, went out, started hitting the doors.
00:03:26
Speaker
And came home and I have two kids now, as I think I've mentioned in previous episodes.
00:03:34
Speaker
Got two kids, got a two-year-old, got a two-month-old.
00:03:39
Speaker
And they just destroy our place.
00:03:42
Speaker
Yeah, we're in a two-bedroom apartment right now.
00:03:44
Speaker
They destroy our place.
00:03:46
Speaker
We, you know, we leave them alone for 10 minutes.
00:03:50
Speaker
The room is destroyed.
00:03:52
Speaker
So it's not easy to keep this place clean around here.
00:03:55
Speaker
We get, you know, people to come help us clean sometimes, try to utilize that.
00:04:00
Speaker
So we're not cleaning nonstop.
00:04:02
Speaker
But today I came back and the house was clean.
00:04:06
Speaker
It was spotless.
00:04:07
Speaker
I'm like, wow, what changed around here?
00:04:11
Speaker
And my wife, she does an awesome job taking care of the kids, cleaning up.
00:04:16
Speaker
So usually the house is, you know, picked up when I get back.
00:04:19
Speaker
She tries to keep up with it.
00:04:21
Speaker
But today when I got back, it was spotless.
00:04:24
Speaker
I'm like, wow, what is going on today?
00:04:27
Speaker
How is it so clean around here?
00:04:30
Speaker
And she told me this, that today she decided to do a clean-a-thon with her sister who is in Utah.
00:04:39
Speaker
So they get on Skype, FaceTime, whatever.
00:04:42
Speaker
And they have a video.
00:04:43
Speaker
They're on video.
00:04:44
Speaker
They're chatting.
00:04:45
Speaker
They said, hey, let's just clean the whole time while we're chatting, doing our video conference.
00:04:50
Speaker
Let's clean the whole time.
00:04:51
Speaker
They made it a competition.
00:04:54
Speaker
And she was like cleaning like a mad lady.
00:04:56
Speaker
Just, I guess they bet like, I don't know, a smoothie or something on it.
00:05:02
Speaker
Five bucks to the winner.
00:05:03
Speaker
Whoever could clean the most rooms or, I don't know, pick up.
00:05:06
Speaker
They made some sort of point system or something.
00:05:10
Speaker
But the point is, she made it a competition and she did a video call.
00:05:15
Speaker
So she was literally cleaning the exact same time as her sister.
00:05:21
Speaker
So why do I bring this up?
00:05:23
Speaker
And why did she get so much done?
00:05:26
Speaker
I think she got so much done because, number one, she made it a competition.
00:05:30
Speaker
But number two, she was doing it with a teammate.
00:05:34
Speaker
She was out there doing, had a common goal of cleaning something, and she got it done.
00:05:39
Speaker
And I got to thinking, wow, that is not that much different than what we're trying to do with solar.
00:05:47
Speaker
For me, if I can be around a team, if I can be out there knocking on doors, if I can be out there closing deals and I know that I have a team behind me, I know that people are doing the same thing as me.

Importance of teamwork in sales

00:06:00
Speaker
It helps me so much.
00:06:01
Speaker
So for those that are out there lone wolfing it,
00:06:05
Speaker
that are, you know, starting your coming.
00:06:08
Speaker
I know people have teams they bring in in their companies.
00:06:11
Speaker
I know some guys though, they just try to go out and lone wolf it, go knock their own doors and not really be part of a team.
00:06:20
Speaker
And it's extremely difficult when you do that.
00:06:24
Speaker
So that's why I mentioned that story is because I think any of the great people in this industry, they have some type of team, some type of accountability.
00:06:34
Speaker
And I've noticed that I will go some weeks where I don't really try to work with anyone.
00:06:39
Speaker
I try to be more independent.
00:06:41
Speaker
Just try to go do my own thing.
00:06:43
Speaker
But my weeks when I do the best, what do I do?
00:06:47
Speaker
I try and get someone behind me.
00:06:49
Speaker
I try and take someone out on the doors with me to train.
00:06:53
Speaker
I try to have someone going out to a similar area.
00:06:56
Speaker
And it's not just me that talks about this.
00:07:00
Speaker
Mike O'Donnell, who is probably the greatest in the industry,
00:07:05
Speaker
He's talked about it several times to where he, every time he goes out and knocks, he has someone meet him at a Starbucks and they go out right after that.
00:07:12
Speaker
Because guess what?
00:07:14
Speaker
If you have someone meeting up with you, if you have someone that is anxious to get trained out there, it's going to do two things.
00:07:21
Speaker
It's going to make you want to, you know, push through objections, want to present at a high level because you got to impress the new guy, right?
00:07:30
Speaker
And number two, it's going to hold you accountable.
00:07:32
Speaker
It's going to get you out there.
00:07:35
Speaker
So if you struggle with that at all, this is what's been helping me.
00:07:39
Speaker
Just get someone out there.
00:07:41
Speaker
And guess what?
00:07:41
Speaker
They don't have to be from your same company.
00:07:43
Speaker
They don't have to be.
00:07:47
Speaker
They can be from your company.
00:07:48
Speaker
Great.
00:07:48
Speaker
Go train a new guy.
00:07:49
Speaker
But even if, let's say, you just came in as a rep, your company expects you to just go out by yourself and
00:07:57
Speaker
Head out in the neighborhood.
00:07:58
Speaker
Do what Michael O'Donnell does.
00:08:00
Speaker
Just pay your nephew, pay your cousin, pay someone from your church, whatever.
00:08:06
Speaker
Buy him a drink and say, hey, I'll buy you a drink.
00:08:08
Speaker
I'll pay you 20 bucks.
00:08:10
Speaker
Come out and just, you know, check out the doors.
00:08:13
Speaker
Come out and knock with me.
00:08:15
Speaker
You don't have to say anything, but just come follow me around the neighborhood.
00:08:18
Speaker
How's that for accountability?
00:08:20
Speaker
Right.
00:08:22
Speaker
So just something that has helped me tremendously get someone out there.
00:08:26
Speaker
And if you are in the San Diego area, if you want to go hit some doors.
00:08:30
Speaker
Then shoot me a message.
00:08:33
Speaker
Always down to knock with people I've knocked with, you know, people from different companies.
00:08:39
Speaker
And, you know, sometimes I have more time than others, but shoot me a message.
00:08:42
Speaker
If you're down here, we'd love to go, you know, knock with some people, train.
00:08:47
Speaker
Okay.
00:08:48
Speaker
And don't let it become a distraction.
00:08:49
Speaker
Make sure you're hanging around the right people.
00:08:52
Speaker
Go train someone.
00:08:53
Speaker
Right.
00:08:53
Speaker
But don't get with someone who's going to distract you and, you know, just want to waste time out there or
00:09:01
Speaker
or not hit doors the whole time, take a bunch of breaks, make sure you're getting someone that will hold you accountable, and that you're actually working because that can drag you down fast if you're not careful.
00:09:11
Speaker
Okay, so just a little tip of the day.
00:09:15
Speaker
And now,
00:09:16
Speaker
Here's the tool you should

Introducing Focusmate for productivity

00:09:18
Speaker
all be using.
00:09:18
Speaker
Okay.
00:09:20
Speaker
And I just started this using, using this a couple of weeks ago and it blew my mind because it's exactly in line with what we're talking about here.
00:09:29
Speaker
So the tool is this, it's called focus mate.
00:09:32
Speaker
And what it does, it pairs you with someone.
00:09:36
Speaker
Um, it's a video conference call basically.
00:09:39
Speaker
And what it does, it pairs you with someone who has, um, who wants to be accountable for
00:09:46
Speaker
And puts you in sort of like a virtual office space where you have to work together at the same time.
00:09:52
Speaker
And what's so cool about it is you do 50 minute sessions.
00:09:55
Speaker
Again, it's free, by the way, depending on how much you use it.
00:10:00
Speaker
I think it's five bucks a month.
00:10:02
Speaker
So dirt cheap.
00:10:04
Speaker
If you want to use it unlimited, but it's free, you can do, I think three sessions a week for free.
00:10:11
Speaker
And it'll pair you with just someone random or you can set up sessions with, you know, with someone who also has an account on the website.
00:10:22
Speaker
So we'll put this in the show notes.
00:10:24
Speaker
But if you are struggling with your productivity just in general,
00:10:28
Speaker
then go give this a shot.
00:10:30
Speaker
It's going to pair you with someone random.
00:10:32
Speaker
You start out, it's a video call, and you just say what you're going to get accomplished during that session.
00:10:38
Speaker
You can choose either 25 minute or a 50 minute session, and then you get to work.
00:10:44
Speaker
So you take a minute or two, say what your goal is during the session, and then you're on screen the whole time.
00:10:49
Speaker
You can, you know, mute yourself if you're making noise.
00:10:53
Speaker
But you're staring at this person and they're working on the video.
00:10:57
Speaker
And if they see that you're messing around or whatever, I mean, they're probably going to not say anything, but...
00:11:04
Speaker
you're just going to be held accountable because someone is staring at you the whole time on your computer or phone, whatever you're using it on.
00:11:11
Speaker
And they're seeing what you're doing.
00:11:13
Speaker
So if you're not working, if you're not doing what you said you're going to do, you're going to look kind of like an idiot at the end because at the end it beeps after 50 minutes and then you have to say exactly what you accomplished during that session.
00:11:28
Speaker
So it could be used for a lot of things.
00:11:29
Speaker
I've been using it just working on podcasts, working on follow ups, working on online lead forms.
00:11:38
Speaker
I'm creating just working on social media content.
00:11:43
Speaker
I've been using it for stuff like that, but I think it could be used on the doors.
00:11:48
Speaker
So it would be sweet.
00:11:50
Speaker
I'm thinking maybe I'll create like a door to door version of this.
00:11:53
Speaker
Don't steal my idea.
00:11:55
Speaker
But if you are struggling with any type of productivity, any type of accountability, try this out because it just takes a concept that I know for sure works.
00:12:05
Speaker
If you're around someone, you're going to be more productive.
00:12:09
Speaker
If you guys are both working, someone's staring at you, if you're saying what you got done, then it's going to help you a lot.
00:12:17
Speaker
So I noticed a huge difference.
00:12:19
Speaker
I got more done in these 50 minutes than probably would have taken me two, maybe three hours to accomplish what I was getting done during this 50 minute session.
00:12:30
Speaker
So go download that.
00:12:32
Speaker
Give it a shot or you don't need to download it.
00:12:34
Speaker
Just go to the website.
00:12:36
Speaker
I'm not sure if there's an app.
00:12:38
Speaker
I've just been using it on desktop here.
00:12:42
Speaker
Try it out.
00:12:43
Speaker
And then if you're struggling with just accountability or, you know, motivation, make sure you have a team behind you.
00:12:50
Speaker
Okay.
00:12:51
Speaker
And that's why we created Soul Society as well to help you have a team of people behind you.
00:12:57
Speaker
So go check out Soul Society.
00:12:58
Speaker
That is our training platform.
00:13:01
Speaker
And the idea behind it is that we're trying to create a community of professionals that can hold each other accountable and maximize our time in the solar industry.
00:13:12
Speaker
So I hope that helps.
00:13:13
Speaker
Let me know what you thought of that.
00:13:15
Speaker
And don't forget, tune in next Tuesday.
00:13:18
Speaker
We'll be dropping fresh new content.
00:13:21
Speaker
And then we've got tons of guests upcoming.
00:13:24
Speaker
So send this to someone that could use help with their productivity or that has ADD or that can just not focus.
00:13:32
Speaker
I think it's going to help them out a ton.
