Trista's Swimrun Journey

00:01:09
Speaker
Welcome floppy fish sticks here which we are very excited to join us on this episode today a little bit about trista you guys are new to swimrun you may not have met her yet but you will and if you guys have been in swimrun for a bit y'all know who trista is uh she's an amazing amazing athlete mentor in the sport She's completed in Ottolo Worlds, Rockman Swim Run, Orcas, Casco Bay, just to name a few. She's definitely well-traveled swim runner, and we are very excited to have her as one of our best friends in swim run. She was the person who answered all of our questions when we first started racing, even lent us some gear when we started out. And we are just so thankful to have her in the sport here and as a mentor.
00:02:05
Speaker
Thanks, Sarah. That was really sweet. Yeah. We're happy to be here. We're super excited. And we are so excited that you guys are starting this podcast. Like, that's really exciting news. So, yeah, thanks for having us. It's awesome having you guys. I mean, Addie is just as much of a baddie as her mom, too. she's A young athlete kind of starting out. You do a little bit of everything, I've heard, but you also are like...
00:02:31
Speaker
absolutely killing it on the volleyball court right now and you guys competed together as floppy fish sticks and Austin is it twice now Yeah, this was our second year. Yeah. Oh my gosh, that's incredible.
00:02:45
Speaker
Well, I got, okay, so I guess we'll do what every good podcaster does. Tell

Transition from Ironman to Swimrun

00:02:49
Speaker
me a little bit about yourself and i guess like what you guys' is athletic background looks like. Addie, I know you're about to turn 12, so your your list is a little bit shorter than mom's, but I know that you do some incredible things as well. So yeah, tell us a little bit about yourselves. Yeah.
00:03:07
Speaker
Yeah, so you want me to go first, Adi? Yeah. and So I... found swimrun in probably like 2018, 2017 maybe. I'm sure everyone knows Amy Bush, my regular partner. We were both in the and the throes of Ironman training. When we learned of swimrun, we heard of this sport that was happening and it was a partner sport and there was one in North Carolina that we kind of had our eye on that we really were interested in. And I think both of us like immediately once we thought like who would do this with us, it was just a no-brainer that we thought of each other. and so Amy and i got into it you know it was we We said that we had to finish training for Ironman and complete the race that we were training for before we could start swimrun. even though we had first heard of North Carolina first, our our first race was actually Lake like James that we did together. And i think before we even actually raced, we were hooked from the very beginning. Like we had so much fun. it was it was new to both of us us, of course, but trail running was really new to me. I had mostly been on the road and i didn't really love running so much. I really liked the idea of like pushing myself and finding challenges and doing them with friends but i didn't really learn of trail running i got into swim run it was just something fun and different and new and very very opposite of ironman training you know it it just felt like very freeing and so i think once amy and i really started doing those races
00:04:40
Speaker
We kind of just went all in like very shortly after our first one, we just kind of said goodbye to triathlon. And, and probably, you know, more hello to trail running.

Swimrun Adventures and Family Bonding

00:04:51
Speaker
God, when I found trail running, it was like, it was like a whole new love. It's like night and day. It really Yeah, it really is. whole new world opened up for me. Yeah, so that's that's kind of how I got started. Amy and I did probably, i don't know, every race we could.
00:05:09
Speaker
We just started researching it and you know started reaching out to everyone that we knew that knew anything about it and just kind of fumbled our way through the first few years. i was going to few races. little than that. We still fumble our way through everything. Yeah.
00:05:27
Speaker
Oh, that's awesome. Addie, how did I mean, how did you get into swim run? How did your mom convince you to do it? I mean, has volleyball helped you at all? I kind of got more into volleyball, like, after i started doing swim and stuff. Okay.
00:05:45
Speaker
My mom would kind of like take me to the lake and we would just swim and like run and have fika and like, it was really fun. yeah But never- That's part of swim run. That's really fun. Yeah. It was fika.
00:06:02
Speaker
Yeah, like in the early days, we would go to the lake together and I would pull her in like an inner tube behind me. She was so young that i didn't I didn't trust her to be without like a life jacket. she was probably like three i would put her in and really what sealed the deal was like i would give her snacks so she would snack in the inner tube as i pulled her in the water and then when we got to shore we would have the fika together we would eat some snacks and play around in the water like near the shore a bit and then get back into the raft and swim some more that was really how it started
00:06:36
Speaker
and then like we actually started like Doing, like, jogging outside on Lake Lanier and, like, getting in the water together. and then we did Austin together. Twice. That's awesome.
00:06:56
Speaker
Yeah, what was the, I mean, what was the first time, like, where you're like, I want to do this and race it with mom?
00:07:04
Speaker
I don't remember. it like yeah i think you, like... talked to me about Austin was like, it's a really good race. Is that the mom voice? Yeah. perfect yeah yeah Yeah, I think I always made it just real chill. Like she has always been a swimmer. Like she was able to swim across the pool by herself at like the age of three, like super young. She's always been really confident and comfortable in the water, but she never swam competitively. She was on summer leagues and both my kids, I was like, you know, this swimming is a life skill that you need to have. So we we definitely did swim lessons and they did like summer league swim teams.
00:07:46
Speaker
And so she never competed in in swimming. she Like her mom, she's not a huge fan of running. She's a great runner. She is a great runner. Super speedy.
00:07:58
Speaker
but Bad stamina. Doesn't like to do it forever. But yeah, so that was the the main goal. I knew it wasn't something that she was going to be competitive in. and want to go really hard. She is competitive, but with swim running, it was just more about really spending time together and just having fun with it. So it just kind of came organically and came naturally. We would always just go out and have fun in the forest together. And then finally I was like, Hey, would you want to do a race? Because Previously, you know, before a couple years ago, we didn't have the experience distance in the US. It wasn't until Attila came over into the US and offered the experience distance. Before that, there wasn't really any format that would I would feel okay with her racing in. But when the experience opened, I was like, ooh.

Training Techniques and Gear Choices

00:08:48
Speaker
o o you're like that's it right there that's perfect yeah that's right so yeah I just continued to make it about more about the fika and just hanging out and spending time together like we would get in the pool and do like a kick set and just like talk about our day instead of it being you know about like like really We gotta go first! Go first. We stop, watch out. Yeah, right?
00:09:18
Speaker
I love that it's like the team aspect for you guys formed so organically at such a young age with Addy as well. And just it was always about being outside in nature together and spending that time connecting more than it was about a goal of how fast we could get or any of that stuff. That's so easy to get wrapped up in sometimes with sports.
00:09:43
Speaker
It really is. And like I said, she is a competitive person. And so I didn't really want it to be about that because swimrun has never been about that for me, you know, and I wanted her to, to see swimrun kind of like through my eyes and see like the joy in it and how fun it is. And the fact that it is a partner sport, you know, sets it apart, I think from a lot of sports. And even though she plays volleyball, she's on a team. it It's like a major your team sport. it's a man you Yeah. You need like one or two people that like,
00:10:12
Speaker
pop that ball back over the net.
00:10:16
Speaker
yeah Yeah. But you know, swimmer's it's unique in that it's just a two person team and nothing that she was doing really would offer that. So I kind of wanted to make sure that, you know, she experienced it kind of very similarly to how I did because I loved it, you know, and I wanted her To to see the same so see the same way. It's funny, though. We went with Pierce, my son, we went out a couple times. And when it was just Addie and I, it was very chill. But what i noticed is when Pierce, her brother, would come along. it was a bit competitive Wait, Pierce like swam with us? Yeah, yeah, I remember him. that must have been like when I was younger. You would not do that.
00:10:59
Speaker
I mean, yeah, the sibling, the sibling thing comes out like, I mean, I can, I don't know, Addy, like when you're with your brother, like I'm with my sister, like it is game on. I will win everything.
00:11:12
Speaker
Right. there Something about that brings out the competitive side. Oh, absolutely. i mean, you can't let your sibling win. You obviously have to win Clearly, though he's like four years older and a male. this they also had an older brother and it was, or I still have an older brother, but I grew up with that same mindset because he was like four years older than I was. And so I was constantly trying to like,
00:11:42
Speaker
yeah like keep up and compete it was very different yeah yeah makes you feisty it does yeah scrappy That's awesome. Oh my gosh. Well, okay. Well, I mean, obviously like Trissy, you're a little taller than Addy. Has that like, have you? What? Wait, Addy, did you grow since the last time I saw you?
00:12:04
Speaker
She's like, I'm like obviously 15 feet taller than her. one I was like, girl, have we got a girl's skirt the last time? if I am barefoot and she has shoes on. We are almost even. Okay. door day it's crazy it's crazy oh my gosh all right well you'll i was gonna say height might be a challenge but obviously not oh my gosh addy girl i'm used to racing with a short partner so wow love you baby that's great so the uh yeah height difference
00:12:45
Speaker
isn't a factor in the race technique at all. because so it's really not. No. Yeah. Do you guys use the same tether that the Adorkables use or do you guys have your own tether?
00:12:58
Speaker
We have our own tether. Oh yeah. I'm pretty sure because Amy's in charge of our tether. So she would have that. I think we created... Our own, our tether is a little bit thicker. i think that it depends on your partner and who you're racing with.
00:13:16
Speaker
I just got side eyes from Maddie. Yeah, ours is her swim speed, she's very confident and comfortable in the water, but she doesn't spend a lot of time training. And especially in November when Austin is she's usually like out of volleyball season so she hasn't had a lot of time in the pool there's a lot of pulling on my part when i partner yeah so the tether with her and i needs to be a little bit thicker that it doesn't stretch as much so yeah we have our own tether she has um has
00:13:50
Speaker
her own pool boy even. Nice. Yeah. The first year at Austin, we I had bought her this like kickboard that also acted as a pool boy. Like you could use it both ways. I don't know if you've seen this before, but it's really slim. And you can either put it between your legs or you can put it out in front of you. And I thought it might be a really good option in a race situation, especially at I don't think I liked it that much. Yeah. I was thinking, my my thought was like at Austin, the swims are really long. You know, the the two swims in the experience race are are both like 900 meters.
00:14:21
Speaker
And I wanted her, like if she got tired, I wanted her to be able to just like chill. So I was thinking she had a kickboard, she could just put her arms out and, and just kind of float behind me with her head out of water. so we practiced it with, with that, for a bit, but yeah, she didn't like it. She wanted the real deal. So we got her the kill small so that she has that now. Yeah. yeah Oh, that's perfect. I, you got your own paddles too.
00:14:47
Speaker
I, I don't think I have my own. And if I did, i probably wouldn't use them because I think it does make you faster.
00:14:56
Speaker
and like, I think that's the point of it. But like, don't know, it tires me out more because like, I'm not used to using them. Yeah. And we wouldn't just like pull them out of the blue and then like,
00:15:08
Speaker
start using them right yeah yeah so she started without the paddles and then we did try to start incorporating them and yeah to your point I think if you practiced with them it would probably be better but it was i think they were too big for her and her stroke rate just went way down and I could literally you could you could feel that you're like we are dragging fully dragging right right so yeah we just set her up with uh the pool boy without the paddles yeah and that seems to work yeah

Race Traditions and Community Spirit

00:15:37
Speaker
Perfect. nice I think that's a good piece of advice, though, for people who are just starting swim run for their first time and maybe jumped into an experience race, but hadn't had a lot of time to practice with paddles and don't know that feeling and the strength that's required to pull with a set of paddles.
00:15:59
Speaker
Right. Yeah. It's not like, you know, cookie cutter for everybody. You got to. And that's really what I like about swimmer is that you can you can do it however you want. Like it there's really obviously there's the the setup that most people use that works for most people. But yeah, the fun is like figuring out what works for you.
00:16:19
Speaker
Mm hmm. And now we've realized what works for Addy is also all of mom's gear. She's big enough now to, the first year we raised Austin, she was in the Art Junior Corp, like the kid size wetsuits.
00:16:32
Speaker
But now she's big enough to fit into mine. She can fit into my wetsuits. She can fit into my Adidas Terexes. Oh my gosh. It actually works. That's convenient. It really is. And now when she buys me shoes, she makes sure that she likes them too. that is That's a good mom right there. Yeah, because it probably will go to that person.
00:16:57
Speaker
Like the best duo right there too with with gear. Love that. mean know It really does justify the the extra money if I know two people can wear it, you know? Yeah.
00:17:10
Speaker
Yeah, the first year we did Austin, she had, i think, probably whatever kid-sized trail shoes were available, which were fine. Of course, they worked just fine. But, yeah, she definitely leveled up this year when she was in my Adidas.
00:17:23
Speaker
did Did they feel better? Did you feel faster, Adi? don't know. You're like, I ran and I survived.
00:17:34
Speaker
That's right. Yeah.
00:17:40
Speaker
That's incredible. Well, maybe we'll put some lightning little flames on the on the back of the the next pair of shoes so you look super fast. She did at one point wear the Skechers light up shoes. had I had a pair too, and I want a pair as an adult now. Like, wear my trail light up shoes.
00:17:58
Speaker
Yeah. Literally. Like I have a video of her swim running in the special light up shoes. It's adorable. a tiny little baby pull boy. What? Oh my gosh. All right. Well, we we're definitely going to have to see that. Addy. I'm so sorry. We're going to have to watch that.
00:18:13
Speaker
I'll send you over. Oh my gosh. Okay. Well, so i mean, I guess besides the light up shoes, do you guys have any like grip like top moments training together? Besides obviously Addy. I mean, personally, my favorite was was a snack time in the back of the inner tube.
00:18:28
Speaker
please Do you guys have any other favorite memories racing or even training together? don't know. When we went on Austin together, that was definitely a great memory for both of us. But I have some really good memories of us when we just went out on the lake together and we were come back to the car and it would be all like stinky and disgusting but it was just so fun the lake smell yeah oh the lake smell the lake smell are you guys smelling the lake smell right now just saying it it's coming back i think one of my favorite memories is the first year we did austin so okay
00:19:15
Speaker
When Amy and I went to Worlds a couple of years ago, after the second cutoff, there is a swing set at one of the- Oh yeah, I forgot about that. And Amy and I had, you know, we're racing against the cutoffs and we did make them and- I don't even know how don't even know how it happened, but we saw the swing set and we were still tethered in the middle of this you know really hard course. And we went over to the swings and we did at least a couple swings and it was super fun. It was one of my favorite memories that Amy and I have together. And since then, we've had a lot of American teams also do the swings and it's been captured during the race and it's just been fun. And then in Austin the first year, Listen, we had a great race, Addy and I did, but there were some times in that race that, I mean, i there might've been. I was like crashing out. Yeah. There were some hard moments.
00:20:08
Speaker
And after this, the first swim there, when you go through like the camp there, there is a playground and it has a swing set. And I looked at Addy, I was like, Hey, we got to go swing. And she was like, mom, we're in the middle of a race. We can't just go swing. And I'm like, Oh yeah, we can. The heck we can't. Do you know who you're racing with? That's right.
00:20:32
Speaker
The queen of the swings. So we did, we stopped mid-race. We went off course a little bit and did our little swings and, That was probably, that was a great memory for me just because it was so, it was something so special between Amy and I and then, again, that the floppy fish sticks got to do it too. Also, the newer, how do I word that?
00:20:53
Speaker
the The second time we did Austin, aka the last time. Well, and not not the last time. Yeah, the previous time we did last time.
00:21:02
Speaker
Not going to be the last time, right? yeah. Around that area, we didn't swing this time. like i don't... Oh, whatever. We, like, passed it. We didn't swing. And then...
00:21:16
Speaker
and We saw this lady walking, and, like, we chatted with her for a second when we were, like, dragging. She was just a spectator, right? like Yeah, like, she wasn't racing. She was just, like... I don't know what she was doing, but... She, like, gave us... She, like, complimented us, and she was, like, keep going, yay. And she, like... She thought... My mom was my sister.
00:21:39
Speaker
That's compliment, Trista. I love that lady. Whoever you are out there, you're my favorite person ever. That was a super boost in the middle of my years.
00:21:55
Speaker
I love that. That's a good memory. Yeah. That's incredible. I mean, Sarah and I did pass the swings and I did give her a look and I was like, do we do it?
00:22:06
Speaker
I think like at that point when we both were like, Maybe. We were, like, way past it. We're, like, next year. So. We did it the first year. We did. Yes. We did.
00:22:17
Speaker
Well, I mean, we we had to follow Sue and Trista and Amy. Like, every single time I see a swing, I literally think of Trista and Amy. Like, it's, like, it's, like, adorkable. It's got to swing. Like, if you're so if you're not swinging, like, you're not having fun, obviously. like And if you're not having fun, what's the point, right? Exactly. Yeah. It makes me, like, slow down and think. a little bit more and make sure I'm thoroughly enjoying my experiences when I am racing and I see a swing or I'm just out and about and I'm like I should be like a kid right now and just go for a swing because life is good and a swing makes it even better that's right oh yeah yeah I think we should put some rope swings on the next course
00:23:00
Speaker
whatever i don't know what i mean maybe orcas there's a lot of trees there austin we could probably find a tree that do we need a rope swing at austin though we have the cliff jump which is i know well what if we have a cliff jump and a rope swing like double whammy i think actually orcas has that i feel like there's like an old decrepit rope i don't i don't know if i trust that though We might need an updated rope on that tree. Yeah, maybe so. We'll bring it wellll bring an extra tether.
00:23:33
Speaker
okay and extra tether next time and we'll mid-race just put it up. I think that would work, right? i think I know a person who's good with trees. Tree stuff. Sarah?
00:23:46
Speaker
Sarah, do you know how to climb some trees? Yeah, it could totally bring a rope that we could swing off of. See, now we're talking. There we go. now the This is now a requirement for every swim run race is a rope swing. We're declaring it.

Engaging Families in Swimrun

00:24:01
Speaker
Yeah, there is a cliff jump or rope swing. Like, either one. There's a swing at Rockman. Have you seen it? Yes, I actually got to do it. Sarah has to still go back and do it. But there is a swing, can confirm. Kate and I did swing on the swings.
00:24:15
Speaker
There is probably a a swing on every course. You just got to find it. just got That's a good point. Yeah. We just got to be more observant. That's right. Seek out the swings. We're going to start counting lengths of swim runs in amount of swings instead of dogs. That's going to be harder. I know. and you're You're asking my brain to do a lot, Sarah.
00:24:40
Speaker
I don't know if anybody else knows that. I count if when in doubt, like I'm i'm having a rough race, Sarah has to pull me out. I start counting dogs. Like i'm like, oh, that's one run seven dogs long.
00:24:52
Speaker
That one, eight dogs. Seven dogs long. Yeah. That's a pretty good hack. sure what if What if you like pass a dog park, though? That's 12 dogs long, Addy.
00:25:04
Speaker
We're looping all them in. Dogs are no dogs at the dog park. It's 12 dogs long. bottom and I a lot of training runs too, man. I just start counting the dogs and it's the best because you just, you just pay attention to the dogs and they're so cute. So how can you not?
00:25:24
Speaker
That is a solid strategy. Right. For sure. Do you guys have any strategies that you use? With team floppy fish sticks when you guys are in a rut or not not having a ton of energy?
00:25:40
Speaker
Like a go-to?
00:25:43
Speaker
I think just keeping it light. Yeah. I think that was really the importance of the swinging in the first year in Austin because I felt like even though I told Addison over and over, this is for fun. Like, I do this for fun. I don't care about place. I don't care about time.
00:25:59
Speaker
i don't I was still crushing out. Yeah. I don't think she really understood. Like, because it's a race and, you know. I wasn't really upset about, like, placing, I think. I was just upset that, like, it was not I was not having fun. And I was like How much longer is this? And like running in a wetsuit was really, even though she'd done it a lot in practice in Georgia, it's a lot colder. yeah And I think in the race, like she got into the race situation where she's running and you're going faster and you know, there's all the people around you and everything else. And I think she was like overheating and just really uncomfortable. Yeah.
00:26:39
Speaker
Yeah. I think it was just like, just talk, talking to each other, checking in and like making sure like you know, like we can walk. Like, this is fun. Like, let's go swing. That's how little I care about time replacement or anything else. Like really what I'm here for is just like to have fun. So we, we sing a lot.
00:26:57
Speaker
The first year at Austin, when we hit the trails, it was, it was all Hamilton. She just recited. alton the patty That is the best musical to sing. Oh yeah. I endorse that.
00:27:12
Speaker
Yeah. I think I got to like, I got like three songs in at least, right? I mean, we that's impressive. Like if you can sing this well and all of those words, like you're not going fast enough.
00:27:27
Speaker
So you can pick it up a whole little I was like holding my best. Like rapping.
00:27:35
Speaker
And those songs have a lot of rapping too. Again, I'm impressed. Same. I'm also impressed. But yeah, singing is singing is definitely a go-to. What did we sing this year, Austin?
00:27:48
Speaker
I think I did do some Hamilton. Oh, I think so. good. Just because, like, it was funny. I was, like, singing. Carry on the tradition. Yeah, honestly. At this point, now every year you have to sing at least minimum one Hamilton song on the trail.
00:28:04
Speaker
Oh, that. It's funny though, racing with Addy, like you do have to deploy different like techniques, you know, and strategies than I would with Amy, like, yeah very much more like, in protection mode with, with Addy, obviously she's my daughter and she's young. And so making sure that she's like safe and happy, it's, it's definitely different than racing, like with, you know, normal partner. Mm-hmm.
00:28:30
Speaker
I'm like a cheesecake. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. You expound on your cheesecake. Yeah. Because Because you got to keep cheesecake safe.
00:28:42
Speaker
And like it can't mold and it can't get squished. I mean, you're really not wrong. i mean you' your i'm not wrong
00:28:55
Speaker
Okay, so protect your children like cheesecakes. I mean,

cheesecake is delicious, so it should be protected. You're right. Yeah. Perfect. Oh my gosh. i that's that's We just started this podcast, but that's a top moment right there. love that. Oh my gosh.
00:29:23
Speaker
Might have to be a new team name. i love that oh my god be a new team name Protect the cheesecake. Oh, my God. That's amazing. the Okay. So, I mean, like, besides protecting the cheesecake, what advice do you guys give as, like, either other parents or mother-daughter duos are looking at swimrun, either older mother-daughter duos or younger mother-daughter duos, looking at the experience? Like, what advice do you guys have for people kind of wanting to get their kids in or at even, like, wanting to be a part of this?
00:30:01
Speaker
it. Go for it? I love it. Oh, yeah. Go for it. I say just, like, especially if you have, a like, a younger kid, not, like,
00:30:17
Speaker
And someone's that and someone's that someone that's new to swimrun, like, don't focus on, like, we have to win. We have to train. er I guess if the kid wants to do that, then yeah. But don't, like, push them to do that kind of thing. and Like, make it a fun experience.
00:30:37
Speaker
Not, like, not another, like, you have to be the best. Yeah. Yeah, I think you don't have to overthink it.
00:30:47
Speaker
So many times people are like, oh, my kid isn't old enough to swim. And I'm like, well, you don't have they don't have to swim. Like, you know, Addy and I did. We went in the inner tube and and you know I pulled her behind me for the longest time. So you know same thing with with my son Pierce. like He went in there too? Yeah. Yeah. Remember I used to pull you guys on the standup paddleboard they would both sit on the paddleboard and I would pull them. So just incorporating them into the workouts because it's hard. you know It's hard as a parent like to get all the workouts in when you are a busy mom.
00:31:24
Speaker
or busy parent, take them with you. I think it's good for them to see what you do when you're not there. i think it's something fun to share. i remember when i I have one of my fondest memories of Addy was like trail running in a skirt and teaching her about the blazes. Oh, I loved that. yeah I'd be like, look, it's a blaze. And she has all these videos of me like yapping about the blazes and I sound like a chipmunk. And all of them
00:31:56
Speaker
But it was fun. Like I made it into a game, you know, like, oh, where's the next one? Where are we going to go now? Can you find it? And, you know, to keep them busy and engaged. But yeah, there definitely is. i know that there are kids out there that are super competitive and want to do this because they're competitive. So that is something different. And if your kid is into that, definitely foster that and encourage that because there is room for that, right, to be competitive in the sport. But if they're not into that, just do it as something fun. Yeah.
00:32:27
Speaker
It's great exercise. It's great mood boost just to get outside and spend time in nature. Yeah, it's a lot of fun. Oh, yeah. I love that.
00:32:38
Speaker
That's great advice. Oh, what i was gonna say, though, was like, yeah, don't don't overthink it. Like for kids that are little, a just the simple act of standing on the shore and walking into water with your shoes on. Most kids like find that really funny because. So many times all they hear their parents say is don't get your shoes wet. Don't get your shoes wet. And then they get to go into the water with their shoes on and they just think that it's like, what? Super

Reflections and Future Aspirations

00:33:03
Speaker
fun. So little things like that, you know, they don't have to go swimming, but let them get wet and then go on a run, you know, or a walk or a hike or whatever. Just something might like really simple. You don't have to take them on, you know, across the lake. It was it was quite a while before we actually crossed the lake. We would spend time in the water along the shore. And then one day Addy's like, I want to cross the lake.
00:33:28
Speaker
It was a big deal. And get them really funny, cool socks to put under their wet shoes. That is very good advice.
00:33:39
Speaker
We did have matching. that Our first matching socks was of Amy's dog, Ada. oh That's awesome. Yeah. So we put Ada's face on our socks.
00:33:52
Speaker
Made it fun. Yeah. Do you have any favorite pairs of socks, either matching or not matching, that you love to wear? I have Hamilton socks, but my favorite ones are either these really stupid looking ones that I got from my uncle Thomas and they're rainbow. They have his face plastered on him and they say, you're a winner. Don't ask how I got them. It's a long story. That's amazing. And then i I think I raced with those once, like when we went out together on the lake. And then i also have these ones that are green and they have like mushrooms on them, I'm pretty sure. Did I wear those to Austin? think wore those this year, yeah. Yeah.
00:34:39
Speaker
Trista, do you have any favorite socks? Every sock is my favorite sock. I like socks. I really love matching socks. yeah It doesn't, yeah, anything loud and obnoxious.
00:34:53
Speaker
There's this girl at my school. She always has like, she always has really cool outfits, but she always has like the most ridiculous socks underneath them. Like, I think she has ones of Cheetos, like different chip brands, different food brands. It's so funny. You need to get Viv some Frito socks. I love you. Give me the Fritos or the Cheetos. I am down for that. Like those, nothing like a good bag of Fritos or Cheetos after you swim or run or any of that in the above. yeah Yeah. Socks are fun because like, you know, again, it doesn't have to be serious, right? Like just keep it fun.
00:35:32
Speaker
Yeah. And it's like the one piece of kit that I feel like you can really personalize. Right. Yeah. They're fun. Yeah, I know. Definitely. and Also, you can also see each other on the course. Like if one of us is running up like super fast or feeling like a fast day, like you can still see that person on the course or even in race pictures.
00:35:53
Speaker
You're like, those those are my socks right there. Fun socks. Yeah, the photos are the easiest. You're going through all the hundreds of like, you know, but what are they called?
00:36:05
Speaker
The little pictures? Yeah. Raise pictures? Raise photos? Photographs? What? Thumbnails. Thumbnails. There we go. like Pictures?
00:36:20
Speaker
And you can instantly like see the socks. it's it's There you go. I was like, we're all saying pictures. There are pictures. That is a good hack, though.
00:36:32
Speaker
Yeah, so if you want to find yourself on the thumbnail, wear fun socks. we Here we are, folks.
00:36:40
Speaker
Do you guys, like, have, like you guys gave some really great advice, but is there anything, like, that swim run or even racing together has, like, taught you guys about, like, what you, like, want to take forward? Or, like, Addy, like, had did swim run teach you anything, like,
00:37:02
Speaker
Can I go? Yeah. I have one. Yeah. I think after the first year we did Austin, Addy was like, that was so fun. I want to do it again next year. And I want to do it better. Yeah. want to do it faster. And I was like, great. Well, we have to train.
00:37:20
Speaker
Exactly. and I did not really train. I don't like training. Yeah. And so she did the same thing this year after the race. She was like, I want to do better. I want to do better. I want to go faster next year. And I said the same thing. Well,
00:37:36
Speaker
You got to do the work. And so I think that's the biggest takeaway is like, it' it's not going to come easy. Like sure, you can do it. And I highly recommend doing it. It's it for, especially for Addison with her focus on volleyball. I'm not going to, even though she should be running more than she is, I'm not going to force her to do that. But if she does want better results, then she has to put in the work. And I think that is a good life lesson sure. Yeah.
00:38:03
Speaker
A big takeaway. But she hasn't trained since Austin. so I mean, volleyball helps with like running and the stand stamina and stuff, kind of. And the strength.
00:38:14
Speaker
Yeah. But I have not done like any swimming. Yeah, swimming's harder. yeah To get the pool time and be on a team. and Yeah, yeah that's yeah. It takes a little bit more commitment. And and that's that's and i don't like it I don't like being on the team.
00:38:33
Speaker
this one team yeah I love my volleyball team though. But the swim team, it's not, like, a team. It's not a team. You just, just like, go separately. like Yeah, understand that.
00:38:46
Speaker
What part of it is team? It's just, like, you put your scores together, right? Yeah, you put your scores together. And then I guess, like, just showing up to swim meets, like, with other people that, like, you train with.
00:39:01
Speaker
But I totally understand the like outside of the pool versus like on the court like it's a it's a different kind of aspect team wise like i mean the swim run you get to talk to your teammate just like you do on the volleyball court and so in this on the swim team on the in the pool you you're all out of breath so you can't even talk to each other yeah and underwater yep oh it's so fun
00:39:26
Speaker
yep fine Well, are there any swim run races this year or in the future, I guess, that you guys are thinking about doing as a team as well?
00:39:39
Speaker
You know, one of the things I was really looking forward to this year at Austin was a lot of other kids racing. So we had Lexa and her son that raced, which is the same age as Addy. And then Cara and her daughter were going to race along with Wendy and her daughter. And because of the government shutdown and the flights it got all messed up, Cara and Wendy were unable to make it. And that was a huge bummer. So I i love that Addison was there to race with Lexa's kid. And that was really cool. But yeah,
00:40:10
Speaker
I was sad that, you know, there weren't, there was half as many kids as we had planned. Yeah. And so there's been some conversation about maybe making it out to Folsom because they have a shorter race.
00:40:22
Speaker
or maybe, you know, if it's not Folsom, another race where we can get all the kids together and have that fun race experience. Definitely want to do it again. Austin is like a staple and that's easy. And one of the things that add you you didn't mention it, but I think one of the things she really liked about Austin this year was like being part of the gang. This year while I was working the race, she had a lot of time to hang out with just people in the community, like our friends. Right. And she was treated like one of, one of the grownups and a friend and she got to hang out with everyone and experience that whole like community aspect, which she really, really liked. yeah.
00:40:58
Speaker
yeah mom had to stay at the I still don't know what it's called but the big like indoor area with all the tables at Austin she had to stay over there and like do all this work stuff and blah so I went over to some of her friend's house and There were like eight people there. Yeah, you got to hang with us. It was awesome. Yeah. Yeah. She loved it. It was so fun.
00:41:27
Speaker
Yeah, she really enjoyed that. So certainly I think we'll do Austin again. i don't know, maybe a full sum. Maybe she'll come with me internationally. Like Khan is really one that's like on my list. I would love, love, love, love love to do that one. it's like the warm water and you know, she's, she's studying French. So I feel like that would be. Perfect. Adi will be able to translate for all of us then. Exactly. Yeah. So maybe, i don't know. We'll see.
00:41:58
Speaker
Adi, are there any races that you get a, that you are like, maybe like, Ooh, that looks fun I don't know. i don't really look into it because i don't I don't know where and I haven't really asked about it or talked about it. got you But I think think you've been like scoping out some different things. Yeah. so You could search it up.
00:42:22
Speaker
You could if there's anything that you're interested in. Yeah. Oh, that's so cool. Okay, so besides volleyball, Addy, one last question. Are there any other sports, or even Trista too, are there any sports that you guys want to get more into or even try dabble in?
00:42:40
Speaker
I've tried like a lot of sports. Addison's done every sport, imagine. Every single one. I'll give list. But volleyball, like I tried it for a week, like this weird summer camp. Okay. And I stuck with basketball for a bit, but that was only because, like, I was told to. I didn't really like it.
00:42:59
Speaker
And I tried volleyball for, like, a week, and I didn't really stick to it. But then, like, a year later, i think, I did the
00:43:11
Speaker
So the middle school has this team and then... It's like a high school feeder team. Yeah. It's like junior grads. It's like junior high team. And I did that.
00:43:24
Speaker
And then I think I did club... or Yeah, so I did a year of that, and it's like a month or two. It's not really long. But I think that got me into it more. And then I did club for a year, did the junior glads again, and now I'm on my second year of club.
00:43:44
Speaker
And I'm loving and so Yeah, you're killing it. She's into, she's, she's learning guitar and she does that. She's quite the artist. She's always creating things. And so she does that, but like, there's really not outside volleyball and school. There's, that's pretty much it. So yeah, yeah I think volleyball is where we've landed.
00:44:10
Speaker
Yeah. That's awesome. Well, we're very excited to watch your journey in both volleyball and swim run. Because it sounds like you guys will keep on swimming and yeah running as long as you can.
00:44:27
Speaker
Heck yeah. Oh, yeah. That's the goal. Love that. like But, like, you're reaching grandma age. Like, what am I going to do? so
00:44:44
Speaker
I mean, Addy, you can just said trade up partners. I think that's how that works. Wow. You know, yeah. Once you're faster than me, then you can train me out. yeah Trista's going be swim running for a long time yet, so I'd watch out. That's right. And let's not talking talk about being a grandma anytime soon. but Yeah, that means a whole other thing. Not yet. Dang, I just got roasted by my 11-year-old. Oh, man.
00:45:17
Speaker
oh man I'm dead. Well, thank you guys so much for joining us and coming on the podcast and sharing a little bit about your story. Before we end, is there any other like pieces of advice or tidbits or really anything that you and Addy want to share?
00:45:41
Speaker
just do it. Yeah, like if you're looking into swimrun or like you've heard about it, like look more into it and like train for it and get into it because think it is a really great community and a really good sport and it's so much fun so oh that literally just warms my heart hearing you say that okay mom are you gonna start crying again
00:46:12
Speaker
yeah
00:46:15
Speaker
exactly I couldn't have said it better myself. That's great advice. I love that. You guys have been awesome. I absolutely adore both of you and I love seeing you guys at races and if we don't see you, we get to like FaceTime you guys. so That's right.
00:46:34
Speaker
it always Thank you guys for having us on. I'm so excited for for your podcast. I think it's just I can't wait to see what you guys do. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
00:46:45
Speaker
Thanks, guys. Awesome. Well, we love you all and we will see you next time on the pod.
