Are mythical creatures REAALLY mythical?  Guest: Tyler Callaby

Transcript

Speaker: Hello and welcome to Wild Theories.

Speaker: I'm your host Alex.

Speaker: And I'm Joe.

Speaker: Also your host for the uninitiated, Wild Theories' toes align between somewhat informational and somewhat game show.

Speaker: The concept is actually pretty simple.

Speaker: Each episode is focused on a specific subject.

Speaker: We're going to keep going where each host will bring forth an interesting theory or story relating to that subject.

Speaker: Each episode will also feature a guest whose job it is to decide at the end of this, which one of us supplied the most entertaining foog for thought.

Speaker: Fog for thought.

Speaker: I love it.

Speaker: And the winner will get to decide the topic for the next episode.

Speaker: Today we are talking about mythical creatures.

Speaker: Are we?

Speaker: We are.

Speaker: But are they real?

Speaker: Is any of this real?

Speaker: Who knows?

Speaker: Am I real?

Speaker: episode's over guys.

Speaker: Go home.

Speaker: Oh wait, you're probably already home listening to it.

Speaker: The winner will get to decide the topic for the next episode.

Speaker: So today we have our friend Tyler.

Speaker: I know I said that really weirdly.

Speaker: He's like Tyler.

Speaker: He's a mythical creature.

Speaker: I am.

Speaker: Can I confirm?

Speaker: Our own resident gnome.

Speaker: I was going to say.

Speaker: Leprechaun or gnome, yeah, sorry.

Speaker: Do you know Ginger?

Speaker: Or Irish?

Speaker: Or anything remotely related to a leprechaun?

Speaker: Tyler, if you had to be a mythical creature, what would you be?

Speaker: That's actually a good question.

Speaker: I'd have to be a fairy.

Speaker: Any specific reason why, or just why not?

Speaker: You'd get to hang out with Tinkerbell.

Speaker: I mean, fair enough.

Speaker: Fair enough.

Speaker: That's it?

Speaker: Just hang out?

Speaker: That's it.

Speaker: What about all the magical abilities that fairies have?

Speaker: I mean, besides flying, what else do they get?

Speaker: Do they get much magic?

Speaker: Fairy dust.

Speaker: They're just tiny little creatures that can fly around and piss everyone off.

Speaker: Wait, but don't you like... Isn't the Tinkerbell thing like if people don't believe in her, she dies?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah?

Speaker: That's pretty shit.

Speaker: That's pretty shit.

Speaker: That's mental health, really, isn't it?

Speaker: Let's be honest.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: What are you talking about?

Speaker: No one believes in me and I'm still alive.

Speaker: There's about three minutes and we've hit rock bottom.

Speaker: Well, if anyone's still listening after that horrendous three minutes.

Speaker: I know I'm not.

Speaker: So normally, how this show goes...

Speaker: We will each take turns talking about a little subject.

Speaker: And then our guest, in this case today, Tyler, will decide which one's better, which so far has been me.

Speaker: And I'd like to think that will continue.

Speaker: Thanks for the faith, mate.

Speaker: Mate, I'm pretty confident.

Speaker: I mean, to be fair, so far you've won both questions.

Speaker: Thank you.

Speaker: But also, like, good luck.

Speaker: Is he trying to seduce me?

Speaker: Why did that sound oddly sexual?

Speaker: Alex, I'm always trying to seduce you.

Speaker: Help.

Speaker: With my fairies.

Speaker: It's fine, we're married.

Speaker: We're wife.

Speaker: We're wife and wife.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: So.

Speaker: Oh, we're rolling D20s.

Speaker: Right, I was wondering what we were doing.

Speaker: Roll a D20.

Speaker: But the real question here is how are we deciding...

Speaker: Who gets 1 to 10 and who gets 11 to 20 again?

Speaker: No, it's whoever gets the highest goes first.

Speaker: Highest number.

Speaker: Why do I always get confused by this?

Speaker: I've already rolled.

Speaker: And the camera right now, it looks like I'm doing something really dodgy.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, Joe, what are you doing?

Speaker: Trying to seduce me like that?

Speaker: I'm shaking my dice.

Speaker: I'm preparing it.

Speaker: This is not getting monetized.

Speaker: What'd you get?

Speaker: 13.

Speaker: Fuck, I got 14!

Speaker: Looks like you're going first again.

Speaker: Again.

Speaker: For the third time in a row.

Speaker: Still can't figure out whether that's good or bad.

Speaker: I think it's bad, because both times I've done it, I have failed.

Speaker: Well, it might be your lucky day.

Speaker: I hope and so.

Speaker: I definitely haven't bribed Tyler.

Speaker: Hmm.

Speaker: Anyway... For anyone that is listening or is watching but hasn't been paying enough attention, they are actually in the room together.

Speaker: No, never.

Speaker: I feel like you have like a... You've kind of already one-upped me now because you could literally bribe Tyler.

Speaker: I don't know what you're on about, Joe.

Speaker: I'm listening to you.

Speaker: Or threaten, yeah.

Speaker: You could threaten.

Speaker: You could blackmail.

Speaker: I could blackmail.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: You don't have anything to blackmail with, right?

Speaker: Yeah, yeah, actually, yes.

Speaker: Fair enough.

Speaker: Buy you a Monster Energy drink.

Speaker: Or a Red Bull.

Speaker: Thank you.

Speaker: Get it right.

Speaker: I'll buy you two.

Speaker: Fuck.

Speaker: Okay, Joe's won me over.

Speaker: Sorry.

Speaker: End of episode, guys.

Speaker: right anyway way too off track track topic tropic yes um i try to say track and topic at the same time so we're trying to keep the can we keep the trend going for the rest of the episode that we just keep mispronouncing everything 100 100 i mean i don't even have to try it's gonna happen anyway right moving on so

Speaker: I'm first again.

Speaker: What a surprise.

Speaker: This is why people only watch the first half, because after they've seen my bit, they're like, right, that's all I need, and they click off.

Speaker: More like, my God, this is terrible.

Speaker: What is this?

Speaker: You know what?

Speaker: I'm going to go listen to Joe Rogan.

Speaker: He makes more sense.

Speaker: Anyway, before I keep getting more distracted... I did actually listen to a bit of Joe Rogan when I was trying to come up with ideas for this.

Speaker: That's cheating.

Speaker: I mean, well, I didn't end up using it, but like I was watching something where they were talking about dragons because I was thinking about doing dragons at first.

Speaker: And I don't know how, but it got me onto Joe Rogan.

Speaker: Um, why not?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: He might be a dragon.

Speaker: You never know.

Speaker: It was an experience anyway.

Speaker: Well, funny enough, my kind of beast, my mythical creature, if you will, kind of connects to dragons a little bit.

Speaker: In a sense, they're kind of both reptiles.

Speaker: I have decided to go with a basilisk.

Speaker: Tyler is a reptile?

Speaker: Yes, he's a reptile.

Speaker: He's, you know, Illuminati and stuff, you know, lizard people.

Speaker: He's one of them.

Speaker: I captured him.

Speaker: And yeah, he's a gnome now.

Speaker: Yes, I've chosen a Basilisk today.

Speaker: It's one of my favourite creatures in D&D as well, so it kind of fitted whatever into this.

Speaker: I was like, why not?

Speaker: I've actually done some research this time.

Speaker: So, be proud of me.

Speaker: Be proud of me.

Speaker: We'll see.

Speaker: It's probably not enough, I'm not going to lie to you.

Speaker: So, there is actually a lot of different...

Speaker: forms of different depictions of a basilisk.

Speaker: So you've got one that is literally just like a pure serpent, like a snake.

Speaker: You've got one which is more known as a... You pronounced it correctly earlier.

Speaker: I'm not going to try to pronounce it.

Speaker: The cockatrice?

Speaker: Cockatrice, yeah.

Speaker: That's it.

Speaker: That depiction is... One of my favourite words.

Speaker: Right, it's so confusing.

Speaker: It's got cock in it.

Speaker: Um...

Speaker: That's because it's got a cock for a head, that's why.

Speaker: Yeah, that is it.

Speaker: It's a literal dickhead.

Speaker: Yeah, it's like a lizard with a cockhead.

Speaker: A cockerel's head, I should probably specify.

Speaker: And kind of like dragon-like wings.

Speaker: And the other one is the more reptile-lizard form with like the four legs, or eight legs in case of D&D.

Speaker: They're all kind of similar.

Speaker: They're all kind of similar, you know, in the sense that they have, like, their petrifying gaze, so they're, like, kind of... Not really rumour, but, you know, the thing about them is...

Speaker: You look at them and you're petrified.

Speaker: You're frozen to stone.

Speaker: Kind of like the whole Medusa thing.

Speaker: And obviously, I'm obviously going through a lot of this is part of Roman and Greek as well, mythology.

Speaker: And obviously, Medusa comes from there as well.

Speaker: Medusa is technically a subspecies of the Basilis, which I found quite interesting.

Speaker: Found that out.

Speaker: Subspecies.

Speaker: That's what Wikipedia said, yeah.

Speaker: Wikipedia.

Speaker: I didn't just use Wikipedia, right?

Speaker: Moving on.

Speaker: Moving on.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: And going on with like subspecies as well.

Speaker: The cockatrice is actually a similar species to the basilisk, but it's actually different.

Speaker: So that's entirely ruled out.

Speaker: That's a different thing.

Speaker: It's similar and they have been confused.

Speaker: I'll find it.

Speaker: I've got it here.

Speaker: So the basilisk is alleged to be hatched by a cockerel from the egg of a serpent that is incubated by a toad.

Speaker: How the hell that works and where biology comes in, I don't know, nor do I want to.

Speaker: Because that sounds all kinds of messed up.

Speaker: So a chicken has to find a toad and then get the toad to sit on its egg.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But then it's laid by... No, it's a serpent's egg that's laid by the cockerel, but it's incubated by the toad.

Speaker: So a serpent is...

Speaker: has sex with a chicken.

Speaker: I guess so.

Speaker: And then the frog comes and sits.

Speaker: Well, what's the chances of all those three things happening?

Speaker: I guess that's what makes it rare.

Speaker: I guess.

Speaker: Um,

Speaker: trying to find it on my notes now i can't remember where i put it i should have probably put them together um but the the cockatrice is is is different it's like a different order i get confused with the order with the bass and suppose it's like a different order like it said it's the egg of the cock room that's incubated by a snake and and you know yeah they're about toad so you mentioned in dnd that they have eight legs yes does that make them spiders

Speaker: I mean, technically... I don't know.

Speaker: I don't think so, because they are technically still, like, reptilian.

Speaker: I guess.

Speaker: And they don't really, like, climb up walls.

Speaker: They're just kind of, you know, the chiller of their legs.

Speaker: You know.

Speaker: Big old fuckers.

Speaker: Anyway.

Speaker: It's actually known.

Speaker: This is where it kind of comes into factual as well.

Speaker: The Basilisk is also known as the King of Serpents.

Speaker: And it's actually believed that the whole myth of the Basilisk came from King Cobra, obviously being the King of Serpents because of similarities with their posture and the way they raise their head.

Speaker: that's obviously going from the depiction of the Bastards being more of an actual snake how do they know that they're royalty then see that is a good question I'm just going to look through my notes again because I did not put this in at all order of what I'm speaking it um

Speaker: So yeah, some have speculated that accounts and descriptions of cobras may have given rise to the legend of the Basilisk.

Speaker: Cobras can maintain an upright posture and, as with many snakes in overlapping territories, are often killed by mongooses.

Speaker: The king cobra, or whatever that word is, has a crown-like symbol on its head.

Speaker: So I'm assuming that's why.

Speaker: It's like the crown-like symbol on the head.

Speaker: So the lizard... Serpent Prediction has that kind of... So they're not actually related to royalty then?

Speaker: I mean, we've not got humans in the leg-aiming process, so they're not royalty.

Speaker: You could have said that Queen Elizabeth was a reptile, and then... Prince Philip was definitely a basilisk.

Speaker: Yeah, there's nothing to do with that.

Speaker: I mean, she never had children, so... Couldn't find a toad to incubate.

Speaker: Exactly!

Speaker: Guys, we're cracking the code.

Speaker: Would you believe that, Carl?

Speaker: Right, okay, moving on.

Speaker: The other thing, like in D&D, when the basil- I'm not from D&D, I just love D&D.

Speaker: The basilisk, when it makes a bite attack, it also poisons.

Speaker: That's another thing that is very heavily mentioned in the myth, is it's very poisonous.

Speaker: Especially with the serpent one, it's said that whenever it moves, it actually leaves behind an entire trail of, like, venom.

Speaker: That if you touch it, fucking dead.

Speaker: Um,

Speaker: So yeah, many stories have given, like added to the Basilisk, deadly capabilities such as it being bigger, capable of breathing fire even, so that kind of links it being to like a dragon.

Speaker: Words.

Speaker: And even killing with the sound of his voice, which I did find kind of interesting, because imagine being able to kill someone or something just by yelling.

Speaker: Must be brilliant.

Speaker: What would be all the choice to kill someone?

Speaker: I'd probably have multiple.

Speaker: Probably the one would just be like the C-bomb.

Speaker: Why not?

Speaker: Why not?

Speaker: Or it could be something like really random.

Speaker: Like, I don't know.

Speaker: It could just be a plain scream.

Speaker: Who knows?

Speaker: I'm not a basilisk.

Speaker: I don't know.

Speaker: Let's ask Queen Elizabeth I.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: I'm going to start throwing that word out more now.

Speaker: It's like a good swear, isn't it?

Speaker: I mean, it's not really a swear, but yeah, I mean, I guess... I mean, it absolutely could be.

Speaker: You stub your toe and you're like, cockatrice!

Speaker: With context, 100%, or without context, or whatever.

Speaker: Sounds like a slur.

Speaker: It does a little bit, doesn't it?

Speaker: We should probably stop before we get demonetised.

Speaker: Yeah, it could be a slur.

Speaker: Slur against who, though?

Speaker: Cockatrices and vassalists.

Speaker: Serpent people.

Speaker: Yeah, serpent people.

Speaker: The lizard people!

Speaker: Oh, are we offending the reptilians?

Speaker: Our overlords.

Speaker: Good.

Speaker: Take me to the hollow earth.

Speaker: Bunch of cockatrices.

Speaker: Bunch of absolute cockatrices.

Speaker: How could you?

Speaker: How dare you?

Speaker: Tom Cruise is on your ass.

Speaker: We'll all be there soon.

Speaker: That sounded oddly.

Speaker: Moving on.

Speaker: So not only that, but apparently the Basilisk could also kill by touch.

Speaker: But also, by like, so say if you have a sword and you touch the Bastas with the sword, that would kill you as well.

Speaker: And also, it doesn't have to be just your like bare skin touching it.

Speaker: It could kill you if you're holding an object that's touching it.

Speaker: It's like a sword or shield.

Speaker: Bosh, dead.

Speaker: Which, that's cool.

Speaker: That's pretty cool.

Speaker: Imagine that.

Speaker: Someone comes up, touch you.

Speaker: Dead.

Speaker: BOSH!

Speaker: That's how you win any fight.

Speaker: Tell ya.

Speaker: You just get hit, but... You're done for.

Speaker: I look at you, done for.

Speaker: I think that's pretty cool.

Speaker: Sorry, I'm going off on one.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: That must be such a lonely existence.

Speaker: I mean, I guess that's why there's not many around.

Speaker: Can't touch anyone, can't look at anyone, can't speak to anyone.

Speaker: Can't speak to anyone.

Speaker: They can't actually speak to anyone because even their breath is highly toxic.

Speaker: So maybe that's why they all died out.

Speaker: Maybe.

Speaker: It's quite sad, really.

Speaker: It was not supposed to get sad again.

Speaker: Why is it going to depressing again?

Speaker: Episode 1 was depressing and now... Why do my stories go this way?

Speaker: I don't like this.

Speaker: Episode 2 wasn't depressing.

Speaker: I mean, it kind of was a little bit because we ended up feeling really dumb.

Speaker: Right, okay.

Speaker: I really hope Tyler's questions later aren't too difficult because I need a boost now.

Speaker: I don't want to feel like I'm stupid.

Speaker: So yeah, I've done actual research.

Speaker: I mean, that's pretty much all the information I got, but yeah, that's kind of cool.

Speaker: Right, so this episode was supposed to be about mythical creatures, right?

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: that there are conspiracy theories about.

Speaker: And we've just proven that they exist.

Speaker: So technically, they're not mythical.

Speaker: So fuck.

Speaker: Well, firstly, the creature that you're saying exists is not the same creature.

Speaker: It's just something that was given the name.

Speaker: No, no.

Speaker: It was its own creature.

Speaker: It's like saying a Komodo dragon is a dragon.

Speaker: No, no.

Speaker: They're different creatures, but it's believed that the King Cobra is deprived from that.

Speaker: No one out there actually believes that these things are real.

Speaker: No, not anymore.

Speaker: But do you want to know?

Speaker: Do you want to know?

Speaker: That's my point.

Speaker: Technically, this might bite me in the ass.

Speaker: They do exist, right?

Speaker: Google right now.

Speaker: Google, even at those home, if not if you're driving, God, no.

Speaker: Common Basilisk, and it is an actual lizard.

Speaker: That may have bite me in the ass, but it's an actual thing.

Speaker: Yeah, but it's just the lizard, right?

Speaker: It's not like... Well, no, it's not like the deadly one that can kill you in one bite, or look.

Speaker: But no, yeah, but it has a name.

Speaker: Joe, can you stop twisting my words and making me feel really dumb and stupid?

Speaker: You do this every time.

Speaker: I put in a lot of effort today.

Speaker: And now I've come here.

Speaker: And you're shitting all over me, twisting my words.

Speaker: It's my job to win.

Speaker: It's your job to lose.

Speaker: Yes, but let me have something.

Speaker: You've got like, what, three points?

Speaker: I've got zero.

Speaker: I'm just pointing out the cracks in your theory.

Speaker: Well, stop.

Speaker: As any good seeker of truth should.

Speaker: Why do you have to make this 20 times more difficult than it is?

Speaker: I feel like you enjoy doing this.

Speaker: You just enjoy crushing my soul and just making me feel so insignificant.

Speaker: And being like, ha, you thought you got a point, or guess what?

Speaker: No, you fucking didn't.

Speaker: I am encouraging you to work harder.

Speaker: Oh my god, bro.

Speaker: I tried so hard today.

Speaker: Tyler, you've been quiet so far.

Speaker: I'll buy your whole pack of Red Bulls.

Speaker: What do you think of Alex's basilisk?

Speaker: Well, I mean, I'm too distracted by the fact that basilisks are quite a heavy thing in Harry Potter.

Speaker: So that's all I can think of.

Speaker: What are you even trying to say to me now?

Speaker: Please, stop begging.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: What was the basilisk doing in Harry Potter?

Speaker: I'm trying to remember again.

Speaker: Was it like hiding under the school or something?

Speaker: Yeah, I think.

Speaker: I don't know.

Speaker: I haven't watched Harry Potter in a while.

Speaker: It was like protecting something or yeah.

Speaker: Which I don't think- It was down with the Slytherin lot.

Speaker: Yeah, which I don't think has anything to do with basilisk... Yeah, serpents, slithering serpents.

Speaker: With bellylisks.

Speaker: From, um... Bellylisks?

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Can we just move on and stop?

Speaker: Just... If you had a sound theory... Shut the fuck up.

Speaker: Sorry.

Speaker: Let me have this.

Speaker: That looked really creepy, because this arm just came out of nowhere and just...

Speaker: Like, we're gonna end up being like, this video is gonna be taken onto some other video on YouTube where it's like, ghosts caught on camera.

Speaker: Just stop deconstructing.

Speaker: You even got him to do it as well.

Speaker: That's just bullying.

Speaker: You can deconstruct mine all you like.

Speaker: Yeah, but you know I'm dumb, and I won't be able to do that.

Speaker: Because I would just be there like...

Speaker: You're not, Dar.

Speaker: You're not.

Speaker: Well, I think we can both agree.

Speaker: All three of us can agree.

Speaker: I do lack a bit of the intelligence.

Speaker: You're a bit slow.

Speaker: Yeah, we'll go with that.

Speaker: I'm a bit slow.

Speaker: Well.

Speaker: I feel like I've had a whole breakdown.

Speaker: Jesus.

Speaker: What's going on?

Speaker: I don't think any of us here are astrophysicists.

Speaker: I am.

Speaker: People aren't really being educated anymore.

Speaker: I mean, if we're being honest here, we probably are on par with Joe Rogan at the moment.

Speaker: Nah, mate.

Speaker: You may be at Joe Rogan's level.

Speaker: I'm at Alex Jones' level.

Speaker: Whether that's better or worse...

Speaker: Who knows?

Speaker: You realise I think this might be a running theme now that Joe Rogan and Alex Jones have been mentioned on every episode so far.

Speaker: It's going to continue.

Speaker: It's just a thing.

Speaker: Can we make sure that we do this every episode?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: If I ever get to go on their podcast... Because I want them as guests.

Speaker: If they come on... Bro...

Speaker: That will make me the happiest person alive for the day.

Speaker: Maybe we should put it out as a threat to the universe that we will not stop making this show until they are on it.

Speaker: I will not stop being a dumbass until they come on this show.

Speaker: If you want us to stop, if you've had enough, if you can't take it anymore, make sure that Alex Jones and Joe Rogan get here right now.

Speaker: Tweet them.

Speaker: tweet and make sure they get on or was it now threads isn't it now i don't know i don't have any of that shit that makes me sound that makes me sound like i'm a boomer hey you're the kids he's more with it than me right i'm gonna close down my notes now that i feel completely insignificant oh have you had enough

Speaker: Yes, please, can we move on and not go back to ripping apart the thing I've spent hours creating?

Speaker: I feel like you're being overly harsh on yourself.

Speaker: I mean... It wasn't that bad, I just had some questions.

Speaker: Well... I'm glad you had questions, Shiloh.

Speaker: I'd be more than happy to answer them, just not now.

Speaker: After I potentially probably not win the points.

Speaker: I mean, you were rather confused about what the subject was for this episode, weren't you?

Speaker: I'm always confused, let's be honest.

Speaker: You didn't really understand.

Speaker: I mean, oh yeah, that is true.

Speaker: I was actually pretty confused.

Speaker: Well, moving on from that.

Speaker: My spectacular, well-constructed, thought-through, researched, properly executed...

Speaker: mythical creature.

Speaker: Very abruptly ended.

Speaker: Yeah, very abruptly ended because I had a bit of a moment.

Speaker: But we're moving on.

Speaker: I said what I wanted to say.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: I've put myself in a difficult situation here now because I feel like you're going to be extremely critical.

Speaker: So... Damn right.

Speaker: If I can.

Speaker: Okay, well... Better than your research, boy.

Speaker: What I am going to talk about is golems.

Speaker: Golems?

Speaker: Golems, yes.

Speaker: Like the iron one from Minecraft.

Speaker: I was going to say Minecraft.

Speaker: Basically.

Speaker: Oh, right.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: Well, a basic description of a golem.

Speaker: So a golem is essentially a being from Jewish folklore.

Speaker: Yeah, so it dates back, basically, I think it's mentioned in the Torah.

Speaker: And it dates back all the way to the second century BC.

Speaker: So it's quite an old story.

Speaker: But essentially, clay and mud and just materials like that that are formed into a human body and brought to life.

Speaker: So, for example, in the Bible, when it talks about making Adam, I think it refers to before God's spirit or whatever is put into that body, he is, for a time, a golem because he's just a being of mud and clay.

Speaker: Yeah, he's made of mud and clay.

Speaker: Adding the Lord to the Bible.

Speaker: I think he's got on.

Speaker: Adding more to the Bible.

Speaker: Yeah, basically.

Speaker: So golems kind of like, they have a little bit of a history with Jewish people as a means of protection.

Speaker: Obviously more modern.

Speaker: By modern, I mean like even medieval times up till now, Jews have had like quite a history of being persecuted.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: So there's lots of stories of Jewish people creating golems to help them or to protect them from threats to sort of fight for them.

Speaker: That's actually kind of interesting.

Speaker: This is really hard for me since Minecraft.

Speaker: Sorry, I'm distracted by that.

Speaker: I mean, yeah, the villagers.

Speaker: Oh, wait, no, I'm not going to go any farther.

Speaker: What made me think about golems wasn't Minecraft, believe it or not.

Speaker: Shit.

Speaker: Shit.

Speaker: So I was recently in Prague and we went to this place that was like the sort of underground alchemy lab that had been discovered.

Speaker: And this was the lab used by a rabbi who was also an alchemist.

Speaker: And there's this famous story.

Speaker: It's called Rabbi Lo.

Speaker: At least I think that's how you say it.

Speaker: Let me give him a Google.

Speaker: And he is, he's famous for making this golem that, um, protected the Jewish community in Prague.

Speaker: Cause there was a lot of persecution at the time from Christians, um, claiming that Jewish people were attacking them and yeah, all that kind of stuff.

Speaker: So there's quite, there's like quite a story about how he made this golem, which the golem's name was Joseph.

Speaker: Oh, that's why you went for it.

Speaker: I see.

Speaker: It's self-centred, are we?

Speaker: I do have a quick question, though.

Speaker: Whilst you were in that alchemy place,

Speaker: Did you try any potions or anything like that?

Speaker: You say that.

Speaker: I did not try potions, although you can buy them there.

Speaker: Oh, can you?

Speaker: Oh, that's cool.

Speaker: So they're still made.

Speaker: I think there was like three potions.

Speaker: There was a love potion.

Speaker: There was a strength potion, I think.

Speaker: Or maybe like constitution.

Speaker: I think, yeah, there was a luck potion.

Speaker: Oh, that I definitely need.

Speaker: They're pretty much the same.

Speaker: Well, they're pretty much the same ingredients as they were originally.

Speaker: Obviously, anything that was dangerous has been removed.

Speaker: Yeah, I don't really want to be drinking any mercury or anything like that.

Speaker: Yeah, so they're like fully drinkable and everything.

Speaker: Whether or not they actually do anything.

Speaker: That's up to you.

Speaker: I kind of want to go see that now.

Speaker: It seems really... It's really cool.

Speaker: What I found really interesting as well is they had the section there where they were trying to make the Philosopher's Stone.

Speaker: The Philosopher's Stone is like basically where they try to combine different metals...

Speaker: to create gold.

Speaker: And what was really weird is that they actually found gold there.

Speaker: So they tried to make gold out of alloys of different metals, but then it ran into natural forming gold anyway.

Speaker: I don't know.

Speaker: There was gold there that they don't know how the golds got there.

Speaker: I'm going to say, but yeah, I mean, alchemists used to believe that if you combine the right materials, it was possible to create gold.

Speaker: Um,

Speaker: So they spent a lot of time trying to combine different metals and stuff.

Speaker: But yeah, there was gold found there, which was like, either... See, I think maybe they brought the gold there to be like, hey, look, see, it worked.

Speaker: That's probably where I stand on that.

Speaker: But it's still kind of like, hmm, that's interesting that they actually find gold there in the place where they supposedly were capable of making gold.

Speaker: Maybe, but what if... We're going on conspiracy theories.

Speaker: I might as well chuck one out there.

Speaker: What if they actually did find out the way and then the Illuminati, the lizard people came in, like the basilisks, came in and took it, stole the recipe, killed everyone so no one knew.

Speaker: Golems put up a fight and that's how they own the world now.

Speaker: They're full of riches because they just make gold out of all the different shitter metals.

Speaker: We laugh about a lot of the stuff we look back with alchemy and we're like, oh man, that was so stupid.

Speaker: But what if?

Speaker: There was actually a lot... It was like, alchemy at its time was early science.

Speaker: And there's a lot of things that we actually have thanks to alchemy.

Speaker: You know, the naming of various minerals.

Speaker: Yeah, like yellow bark and stuff like that.

Speaker: It's like a natural painkiller, isn't it?

Speaker: What I thought was really odd as well is when we're about to leave, the woman there, she shows us

Speaker: these pictures of the various alchemists that worked there, including Rabbi Lowe.

Speaker: And they lived really long lives.

Speaker: Like, much longer than the average person.

Speaker: Including, yeah, including there was, I think he might have been a king or a prince that funded them in Prague.

Speaker: And he was born with various degenerative illnesses.

Speaker: He was a product of incest.

Speaker: He was not well.

Speaker: And he lived until I think his 50s, which is older than most healthy people lived back then.

Speaker: Rabbi Lowe, I think, died in his 80s.

Speaker: Yeah, I looked it up.

Speaker: It says between 1512 and 1526, and he died 1609.

Speaker: Those health potions, they worked, I think.

Speaker: They must have worked.

Speaker: I need to get me some of those.

Speaker: Off we pop, lads.

Speaker: Off to Prague.

Speaker: And to be fair, the ingredients are got on them, you know, like there's the love potion is just full of aphrodisiacs.

Speaker: So it doesn't really make you fall in love with someone, but it does have an effect.

Speaker: It has some sort of science behind it, doesn't it?

Speaker: Whereas like, you know, there's yeah, the health potion is full of things that are now known, like various herbs that are now known to be quite good for your constitution, good for your heart.

Speaker: So yeah, there's definitely some science in there.

Speaker: There's a lot of stupid stuff too, but they were kind of

Speaker: They were fumbling around in the dark back then, I think, and they got some things right and some things wrong.

Speaker: I mean, yeah, you're bound to.

Speaker: I mean, they used to drink mercury because, you know, why not?

Speaker: They used to have radium paint on watches.

Speaker: That was, whoa.

Speaker: I mean, you know, people still smoke.

Speaker: Not that long ago, people thought smoking was good for you.

Speaker: So we're not really advanced that much as a society.

Speaker: Not that long ago, people thought vaping was good.

Speaker: Now we're starting to realize vaping is not good.

Speaker: I saw a while ago, there's actually metals like lead and stuff like that in disposable vapes.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, I think perhaps we judge a little harshly.

Speaker: We get hindsight.

Speaker: We get to look back and be like, haha, look at the mistakes they made.

Speaker: But if we were living back then... It would have been the norm and it would be like, oh, you know.

Speaker: Anyway, I'm kind of going off topic here and...

Speaker: I'm going to kind of bring it back in, but then also go off topic again.

Speaker: I was going to say, you guys pretty sidetracked there.

Speaker: So, because I really want to talk about this film.

Speaker: And it's loosely related to Golems, but I am definitely going back off track a little bit here with this.

Speaker: But it's just such a weird story.

Speaker: So the film is called, and I'm probably going to slaughter this,

Speaker: Bulgasari.

Speaker: And it's a South Korean film from 1962.

Speaker: And I believe it's the first kaiju film made over there.

Speaker: So kind of like a Godzilla type thing.

Speaker: But this thing, this creature in it instead is kind of almost like a golem.

Speaker: But it's huge.

Speaker: Or if it's not Godzilla, it could be a bastard.

Speaker: It's like Godzilla-sized golem.

Speaker: So it's this being of man-made materials.

Speaker: So they construct this being to protect their village.

Speaker: Oh, and then it ends up turning on them.

Speaker: Like the Iron Giant.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Basically, yeah.

Speaker: I mean, he was 10% going, wasn't he?

Speaker: What gets really weird, though, this film was lost, and that's not the weird part, but this is a lost film.

Speaker: And in 1985, it got a remake.

Speaker: It got a remake in North Korea.

Speaker: North Korea.

Speaker: Kim Jong Il was quite a fan of the film.

Speaker: He kidnapped a film director and forced him to make a remake of this film.

Speaker: What?

Speaker: North Korea used to do this.

Speaker: They kidnap actors and stuff like that.

Speaker: There's quite a few stories.

Speaker: I think there was a South Korean actor.

Speaker: I can't remember her name.

Speaker: Or actress, sorry.

Speaker: And she got kidnapped in North Korea.

Speaker: She couldn't escape for like 20 years.

Speaker: Her and the filmmaker, they were husband and wife.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And they both got kidnapped.

Speaker: She stars in the film and he makes the film.

Speaker: They also did a lot of like various propaganda films, North Korean propaganda films.

Speaker: And then when they were, I think it might've been for this film, they, um, they were kind of doing a festival tour and they were in Austria and they managed to get to an American embassy and escaped.

Speaker: So, you know, they got out of it eventually, but for quite a few years, they were like being forced to make these things for North Korea.

Speaker: And another weird but also kind of funny part of this as well is that... Funny?

Speaker: Oh yeah, just got kidnapped by North Korea.

Speaker: This is great fun.

Speaker: The company that made the special effects is a Japanese company and they were told that it was a film being made in China.

Speaker: So they had absolutely no idea that they were doing all the special effects for this North Korean kidnap film.

Speaker: Oh my days.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: I'm pretty sure you can find this film out there on the internet for anyone that's interested.

Speaker: The original from the 60s you can't find anywhere, but this North Korean version you can.

Speaker: So, um, Joe, I'm going to pick apart this.

Speaker: Yeah?

Speaker: The fuck does North Korea have to have a golem?

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: I mean, obviously, this creature is basically a golem, right?

Speaker: A conspiracy theory there, my guy.

Speaker: I mean, the conspiracy theory here is do golems exist?

Speaker: Because there are actually people out there who believe this.

Speaker: I mean, clearly, you also mentioned that Basilisk exists.

Speaker: You're talking about Godzilla-type movies and kaiju.

Speaker: Technically, they're all, like, reptilian-like.

Speaker: lizards so technically they can't ask this I don't think this bull gar sari exists I mean they breathed fire they had like poison toxic breath you know Jesse Tyler's with me on this one you can clearly see and yeah I mean I want to mention here that golems are a part of they are a part of Judaism so a lot of Jewish people not all but some Jewish people do believe that golems are real

Speaker: Some people even think that Joseph, the golem from Prague, is still hiding in Prague in the ceilings of the synagogue, waiting to strike again.

Speaker: Do you know if the golems were tall, big, or were they small creatures?

Speaker: I'm pretty sure they were basically humanoid.

Speaker: They looked pretty much like humans.

Speaker: That's kind of interesting.

Speaker: Do we know how they would die?

Speaker: Or like...

Speaker: I'm assuming they would just turn in rubber or some guy would come over with a pickaxe and go... Well, I got some information here about how you create a golem, but I don't know if it says... Maybe they just drank the health potion.

Speaker: I mean, I would assume you kill a golem the same way you kill a human.

Speaker: I'm assuming it would have some sort of heart.

Speaker: Well, it says part of bringing it to life.

Speaker: There's a few different ways described, but quite a common one is to have something written on it.

Speaker: So Rabbi Lowe's golem had the letter from the Hebrew alphabet that symbolizes, I think it's truth.

Speaker: Yeah, truth.

Speaker: So that's sort of carved into the golem.

Speaker: So I suppose if that was removed, that would then remove...

Speaker: it's life as well.

Speaker: Because that's kind of, that's the magical part of it.

Speaker: Well, not wounds, but like, you know, like, yeah.

Speaker: But it's not as cool as Basilisk.

Speaker: Well, that's not for me to decide, is it?

Speaker: Well... That is for our guest, Tyler, to decide.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Now, Tyler, I don't want to bribe you into making any kind of decision here.

Speaker: Don't you dare bribe me.

Speaker: And I certainly hope Alex isn't doing so.

Speaker: Don't you dare.

Speaker: So, if you had to choose, which you do... He's got to.

Speaker: Which one would you go with today?

Speaker: And don't feel sorry for Alex.

Speaker: Don't feel sorry for Joe.

Speaker: I am gonna have to feel sorry for Alex.

Speaker: Yeah, that's fine.

Speaker: That's fine.

Speaker: No, I don't care.

Speaker: I don't care at all.

Speaker: Why would I care?

Speaker: Why would I care?

Speaker: I don't care at all.

Speaker: I'm not upset.

Speaker: Sorry, who?

Speaker: Who wins?

Speaker: I believe the winner is just Joe.

Speaker: I just want to hear it again.

Speaker: Well, actually, Alex, you know you still have a chance here, right?

Speaker: I never have a chance at the questions.

Speaker: We still have the trivia.

Speaker: I stand... Right.

Speaker: I stand no chance at it.

Speaker: So, for anyone listening for the first time, I've won this part.

Speaker: That's one point for me.

Speaker: However...

Speaker: Tyler's going to have some questions prepared for us.

Speaker: And if I get the first question right, then I've got two points.

Speaker: I win.

Speaker: If Alex gets it right, he gets a point where even there'll be a second question.

Speaker: And whoever gets that question right wins.

Speaker: I've got to say, before we do this, next time you're going first, I think it's the fact that I go first every time.

Speaker: That it screws me over.

Speaker: It's got to be.

Speaker: It's got to be.

Speaker: I did hours of research.

Speaker: It's the roll of the dice.

Speaker: Curse my good luck.

Speaker: Tell you what, Alex, if you really think that that's what it is, I will go first next time.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: We will skip the dice roll for the one episode.

Speaker: You can still do the dice roll, but no matter what, you're going first.

Speaker: Well, Alex, are you ready?

Speaker: No.

Speaker: Well, let's do it anyway.

Speaker: I'm ready.

Speaker: I'm not ready, but let's do it.

Speaker: What's your first question for us?

Speaker: I thought I'd start nice and simple.

Speaker: Is it though?

Speaker: And it is simply a question of what's the difference between a mermaid and a siren?

Speaker: Oh, the sirens are bad and they like abduct pirates and kill them and eat them.

Speaker: A siren, if I remember right, is actually kind of bird-like, and a mermaid is more fish-like.

Speaker: Yeah, fuck's sake.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: I thought you might have actually known that one, Alex.

Speaker: Fuck's sake.

Speaker: I thought that was an obvious one.

Speaker: It's me!

Speaker: Sorry, sorry, sorry.

Speaker: Get a bit worked out.

Speaker: I just love this game show.

Speaker: This means I need to choose, well, I get to choose the next episode theme.

Speaker: And you know what?

Speaker: I didn't actually come prepared for this.

Speaker: What?

Speaker: Imagine not being prepared for this.

Speaker: But, hmm, what would be a good subject?

Speaker: Maybe... I can't really suggest anything because I thought that would be unfair.

Speaker: Because you're not lost.

Speaker: I think... I think it's got to be time that we tackle aliens, right?

Speaker: Aliens?

Speaker: Yes!

Speaker: I mean, it's got to be an episode.

Speaker: I mean, I 100% agree with you, but won't that kind of be like us talking about the same theory?

Speaker: Wouldn't it just end up being like a thing of us just discussing aliens as a whole, a general thing?

Speaker: I mean, that would be equally as entertaining and fun.

Speaker: I think what we need to do is we both bring forth a legit conspiracy theory about the existence of aliens.

Speaker: Like the Egypts and like Stonehenge.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Oh!

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Like Roswell.

Speaker: Pyramids.

Speaker: You're what about them?

Speaker: Choose one.

Speaker: Choose one.

Speaker: One alien.

Speaker: You're doing this again, Alex.

Speaker: I don't know what I'm doing.

Speaker: I picked Gerald.

Speaker: Do you understand what the definition of a conspiracy theory is?

Speaker: Because I'm starting to think this is why you're losing every single time.

Speaker: I do.

Speaker: I just... Alex, you could pick things from the pyramids being made by aliens.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Stonehenge being made by aliens.

Speaker: Right.

Speaker: Crop circles.

Speaker: Area 51.

Speaker: NASA tapes.

Speaker: Area 51.

Speaker: Reptilians.

Speaker: Reptilians are aliens.

Speaker: I just did that.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: Bacillus.

Speaker: Scientology.

Speaker: Oh, we can't go there.

Speaker: They believe in aliens.

Speaker: Tom Cruise will be after us.

Speaker: You know what he's like.
