Taylor's Beginnings and Solarpreneur Concept

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro and closing more deals.
00:00:31
Speaker
What is a Solarpreneur you might ask?
00:00:33
Speaker
A Solarpreneur is a new breed of Solar Pro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one.
00:00:42
Speaker
What's going on, solopreneurs?
00:00:44
Speaker
We are back with another episode.
00:00:45
Speaker
I'm your host, Taylor Armstrong, and we're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and hopefully have a much better time in the solar industry.
00:00:54
Speaker
How are you?
00:00:54
Speaker
I hope you're doing awesome.
00:00:56
Speaker
Hope you're enjoying this fall weather that is coming, starting to get a little crisp in

Coping with Sales Cancellations

00:01:01
Speaker
the air.
00:01:01
Speaker
And today we're going to be talking about a little bit heavier subject,
00:01:07
Speaker
And I'll be honest, today I did not want to record, I did not want to get behind the mic, because I had a rough week last week, got kicked in the teeth, got beat up, got thrown down, got spit on, and then got kicked while I was on the ground, metaphorically.
00:01:22
Speaker
But I had the most cancels I think I've ever had in a week.
00:01:26
Speaker
So just tough time.
00:01:28
Speaker
And sometimes it's not all sunshine and rainbows over here.
00:01:32
Speaker
And I'm sure you've experienced some of those weeks as well if you've been in solar for a while.
00:01:37
Speaker
But going through all that...
00:01:39
Speaker
One of the last things I want to do is get behind the mic and talk like I have it all figured out.
00:01:43
Speaker
Because the reality is, I don't.
00:01:45
Speaker
I'm still figuring things out every week.
00:01:48
Speaker
If you haven't noticed by now, this podcast is pretty much an experiment of what's working for me, what's not working, and hopefully bringing a lot of mistakes to y'all that you can learn from.
00:01:58
Speaker
Because I think all of us, even the top guys, there's still things they got to figure out.
00:02:03
Speaker
There's still things they need to improve.
00:02:05
Speaker
So that's where I'm coming from, getting a little vulnerable with everybody, and hopefully that's okay.
00:02:10
Speaker
Hopefully I have your permission, and hopefully you didn't think I was like, you know, God's number one solar salesman on the earth, because truth is I'm still figuring out a lot of things.
00:02:19
Speaker
So today we're going to be talking about really just how you deal with that disappointment, really how you deal with not wanting to continue when it sucks, and when you have weeks like that where you're getting your teeth

Preview of Christian Maroney Episode

00:02:30
Speaker
kicked in.
00:02:30
Speaker
And we also are doing a little preview because next episode we're going to have someone that's one of the top guys in all of solar right now, Christian Maroney.
00:02:40
Speaker
He's coming on next episode and he's been on the podcast previously.
00:02:45
Speaker
He had one of the most popular episodes.
00:02:47
Speaker
So you can go listen to him.
00:02:48
Speaker
But I think today's topic is a good segue into what he talks about because now he's been in the industry for a while now.
00:02:55
Speaker
He's closed 30 deals in 30 days.
00:02:58
Speaker
done some pretty incredible things, but he got pretty real on the podcast we did.
00:03:02
Speaker
And he explained that even a guy like himself, that's one of the top in his company and one of the top in the industry.
00:03:08
Speaker
He has days all the time where he doesn't feel like getting out there, where he fails more than he succeeds.
00:03:13
Speaker
So that's something we talked about is how he continues to keep going.
00:03:16
Speaker
So I'm going to share a little bit of what I do, share a

Stories of Cancelled Deals and Learning from Failure

00:03:20
Speaker
little bit of how I coped with my losses.
00:03:22
Speaker
And hopefully that's a good segue in the next episode.
00:03:26
Speaker
We're going to hear from the man Christian Maroney.
00:03:29
Speaker
But anyway, so I'll tell you what happened last week.
00:03:32
Speaker
I ended up having four cancels on the week, which is insane.
00:03:37
Speaker
Could not believe it.
00:03:38
Speaker
And some of them felt like they were mostly out of my control.
00:03:41
Speaker
But of course, there's always things we can nitpick, do better.
00:03:45
Speaker
But yeah, I mean, the first one was a deal from...
00:03:49
Speaker
I closed it about a month and a half ago.
00:03:51
Speaker
He was this Filipino couple.
00:03:53
Speaker
His wife, she had the better credit, so she was the one on the actual solar contract.
00:03:58
Speaker
And what happened with him, he called me saying his wife just does not want to go solar anymore.
00:04:03
Speaker
And I convinced him to get back in the home, to let me back in to go over things.
00:04:08
Speaker
But when I got there, the wife was just freaking out.
00:04:10
Speaker
And I'll tell you, this is the first time I've ever had this happen.
00:04:13
Speaker
But I was threatening them with the cancellation fee.
00:04:15
Speaker
I'm saying, look, man, I get it.
00:04:18
Speaker
I know your wife's not happy.
00:04:19
Speaker
You know, you want to cancel, but would you rather pay several thousand and cancel this or just save money?
00:04:25
Speaker
He's like, well, Taylor, I would.
00:04:27
Speaker
And then in that instant, his wife comes down.
00:04:30
Speaker
She was upstairs and she says, no, make him pay.
00:04:33
Speaker
He deserves to pay for the mistake he made.
00:04:35
Speaker
Make him pay.
00:04:36
Speaker
just super mad.
00:04:37
Speaker
I'm like, whoa, this is the first time that I'm having the wife on my site and wants her husband to pay for his mistake.
00:04:45
Speaker
And turns out they're in a pretty rocky relationship.
00:04:48
Speaker
Husband is actually going to Philippines and he told me he does not like being around her.
00:04:53
Speaker
He wants to get out of the country so he doesn't have to spend time with her.
00:04:56
Speaker
I'm like, whoa, okay.
00:04:57
Speaker
Sounds like you guys got bigger issues than not wanting to go slower.
00:05:00
Speaker
I'm
00:05:01
Speaker
But it was under the wife's name.
00:05:03
Speaker
So not a whole lot we can do.
00:05:04
Speaker
Still a chance maybe it can be saved.
00:05:06
Speaker
But for right now, I had to cancel it.
00:05:09
Speaker
So that was one of the first blows on the week.
00:05:11
Speaker
And then seconds, I get a referral.
00:05:13
Speaker
Get them closed up.
00:05:14
Speaker
They're stoked to go slower.
00:05:16
Speaker
I get a text from them and those that you follow me on Instagram or social media, you probably saw some of this.
00:05:21
Speaker
But they text me saying, hey, Taylor, we're going on a vacation out of the country.
00:05:25
Speaker
And you know what?
00:05:27
Speaker
We just feel like this is too big of a decision for right now.
00:05:30
Speaker
We don't want to think about it during our vacation.
00:05:33
Speaker
So please just cancel it for now.
00:05:35
Speaker
And it blew me away because they're a referral.
00:05:37
Speaker
They had already gotten multiple quotes.
00:05:39
Speaker
I showed them how we were better.
00:05:41
Speaker
They agreed that we were better.
00:05:42
Speaker
The trust is there.
00:05:43
Speaker
And matter of fact, they knew one of the owners of our installer.
00:05:48
Speaker
So all these things, they should have had massive trust.
00:05:50
Speaker
They still put it off and cancel the deal.
00:05:54
Speaker
Then the third one, close it up.
00:05:57
Speaker
It was a one-legged.
00:05:58
Speaker
So obviously that was probably my mistake.
00:06:01
Speaker
Usually doesn't go great closing one-leggers.
00:06:03
Speaker
Just met with the wife.
00:06:04
Speaker
She said she'd talked to her husband.
00:06:06
Speaker
They wanted to go solar.
00:06:07
Speaker
Close them.
00:06:08
Speaker
And then I get a text the next day.
00:06:09
Speaker
Hey, my husband said that this sounds way too expensive.
00:06:12
Speaker
Let's go ahead and cancel it out.
00:06:14
Speaker
He doesn't want.
00:06:14
Speaker
He's all mad.
00:06:15
Speaker
So my mistake closing the one legger.
00:06:18
Speaker
So yeah, I mean, those were some of the cancels.
00:06:21
Speaker
There was one more on the week.
00:06:23
Speaker
Similar situation.
00:06:24
Speaker
They were saving tons of money.
00:06:26
Speaker
Older couple moved into the home four or five months ago.
00:06:29
Speaker
Stoked to go solar and get a text from the next day to cancel because they didn't want a loan.
00:06:35
Speaker
They didn't want the debt.
00:06:37
Speaker
So there were things I could have done, but some of it to a degree was out of my control.
00:06:42
Speaker
I should not have probably met with the wife without the husband.
00:06:47
Speaker
That could have solved that problem.
00:06:49
Speaker
I should have probably dug out concerns.
00:06:51
Speaker
And so there's a million things you can say I should have, would have, could have, but sometimes there's not a whole lot you can do.
00:06:57
Speaker
And I think my lesson learned is just to ask the hard questions at the end.
00:07:02
Speaker
And I'll get into that a little bit more here.
00:07:04
Speaker
But just not be afraid to ask hard questions because sometimes we're so excited that we got the deal that we don't ask the hard questions at the end.
00:07:12
Speaker
Okay, so those were some of the cancels.
00:07:14
Speaker
And what I want to talk about is how I coped with them, how you can too.
00:07:19
Speaker
And then hopefully just gives you an idea to not get devastated.
00:07:22
Speaker
I wanted to curl up on a ball.
00:07:24
Speaker
Just call my solo career quits.
00:07:26
Speaker
Throw away the podcast.
00:07:27
Speaker
But I'm back at you and I'm not giving up.
00:07:30
Speaker
That's the most important thing.
00:07:31
Speaker
There's only two things you can do.
00:07:32
Speaker
You either give up and quit or you keep going.
00:07:35
Speaker
So you got to keep going.
00:07:36
Speaker
Okay, so here's the three things that I feel like helped me through this and I feel like can help you too.
00:07:42
Speaker
So number one, and that is to keep experimenting.
00:07:45
Speaker
Okay, we're talking about how you cope with failures.
00:07:48
Speaker
Keep experimenting.
00:07:49
Speaker
What do I mean by keep experimenting?
00:07:51
Speaker
Well, you got to realize that basically all cells training, everything that people are doing, no matter how good they are at cells, it came from an experiment at some point.
00:08:00
Speaker
People experimented with some technique, some way of saying something that worked.
00:08:05
Speaker
And it worked.
00:08:05
Speaker
So they kept doing it.
00:08:06
Speaker
So for you, if you're thinking of calling it quits, this is a great way to kind of recharge yourself.
00:08:12
Speaker
Just know that you need to keep experimenting.
00:08:14
Speaker
You need to take whatever happened and use it as a lesson you can learn from, not as a failure.
00:08:20
Speaker
You can either look at it as a failure or a learning opportunity.
00:08:23
Speaker
And if you look at it as a learning opportunity, it's going to make it way easier to cope with some of these cancels or whatever you're going through.
00:08:30
Speaker
So for me, I talked about just asking the hard questions after the sale.
00:08:35
Speaker
And that's a lesson really I took from last week.
00:08:38
Speaker
Because if I would have had the audacity to just go ahead and ask the harder questions, I think I could have saved some of these.
00:08:44
Speaker
What do I mean by harder questions?
00:08:46
Speaker
I mean, ask them stuff like, hey, Mr. Homeowner, how do you justify taking out $71,000 in debt in order to do this project?
00:08:55
Speaker
Pretty bold question, right?
00:08:56
Speaker
One of the deals that canceled, they were doing a new roof
00:08:59
Speaker
and a system is going to cost them $71,000.
00:09:01
Speaker
So would that be hard to ask?
00:09:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:03
Speaker
Would it cause them to cancel in the moment?
00:09:06
Speaker
Maybe, probably not.
00:09:07
Speaker
But would you rather drag out the concerns now and see if you can tackle them or wait till later, leave them to their thoughts and let doubt fester in their mind and them just text you and cancel like they did to me?
00:09:18
Speaker
So that was one of the biggest lessons I learned.
00:09:20
Speaker
Figure out hard questions to ask.
00:09:22
Speaker
Hey, how do you guys justify taking out $71,000 going into debt to do this?
00:09:27
Speaker
Hey, so Mr. Homeowner, what happens to some people is they overthink this in two days and just make this a big decision.
00:09:34
Speaker
It's a lot of money.
00:09:36
Speaker
It's just solar panels, just saving a little bit.
00:09:38
Speaker
So in two days, when you guys wake up and you're not as excited about it, what are you going to do at that point?
00:09:43
Speaker
stuff like that.
00:09:44
Speaker
So for you, brainstorm, what are some difficult questions you can ask your customers after the sale?
00:09:50
Speaker
Hey, and these people, all of them that I closed, they seemed really solid.
00:09:54
Speaker
They didn't seem like people that I needed to ask hard questions for, but it probably would help solidify them.
00:09:59
Speaker
Probably would have dragged

Experimentation and Breakthroughs in Sales

00:10:00
Speaker
out concerns.
00:10:01
Speaker
So that's something that I took.
00:10:03
Speaker
from last week.
00:10:04
Speaker
And that was the lesson I learned.
00:10:06
Speaker
So keep experimenting, write down ways how you can experiment, how you can improve things.
00:10:11
Speaker
And who knows, maybe you're going to be the next Grant Cardone, solar cells guy, whatever.
00:10:15
Speaker
Maybe you're going to be the one that writes a book about this stuff.
00:10:18
Speaker
Because anyone that does anything great, they're just experimenting, they're sharing their results.
00:10:23
Speaker
And that's what I'm trying to do here on the podcast.
00:10:25
Speaker
So that's the first thing, keep experimenting.
00:10:27
Speaker
Okay, and then number two and three, this is more just kind of how to recharge.
00:10:31
Speaker
For me, it's basically how to reset emotionally.
00:10:34
Speaker
And again, you're going to hear more of this on the next podcast we do with Christian.
00:10:37
Speaker
But number two is just do something different.
00:10:40
Speaker
Have like a side hobby.
00:10:41
Speaker
Have something you like doing during the week.
00:10:44
Speaker
For me, most of you know, I've talked about it in the podcast.
00:10:47
Speaker
I took up jujitsu.
00:10:49
Speaker
I'm doing that during the week.
00:10:50
Speaker
It's something that I look forward to.
00:10:52
Speaker
It's a new hobby.
00:10:53
Speaker
I'm learning new skill and it's just kind of like something I look forward to outside of cells.
00:10:59
Speaker
And I know when everything goes wrong, I can go to jujitsu.
00:11:02
Speaker
I can feel like I'm choking people out and doing something awesome.
00:11:06
Speaker
So it's something I would recommend.
00:11:08
Speaker
Take up a new skill, a new sport, a new hobby, and it really helps to recharge, helps you energize and energizes you outside of your work.
00:11:18
Speaker
And really, it's going to help you recharge every day.
00:11:20
Speaker
And then lastly, this might be a no brainer, but hand in hand with that is just make sure to exercise.
00:11:26
Speaker
This is one of the biggest secrets for me.
00:11:28
Speaker
Exercise is hardly anything physical.
00:11:32
Speaker
To be honest, I don't care that much how I look, but exercise for me, it's about how I feel way more mental for me than physical.
00:11:40
Speaker
then wanting to be stronger, wanting to look better.
00:11:42
Speaker
It's more just physical and it gives me the confidence.
00:11:45
Speaker
So for you, exercise, it's going to help you emotionally.
00:11:48
Speaker
It's going to help spiritually, physically, mentally.
00:11:51
Speaker
I think it helps in all of the above.
00:11:53
Speaker
And a lot of ideas I have for the podcast, for sales, for life in general.
00:11:58
Speaker
Guess what?
00:11:58
Speaker
It comes while I'm exercising

Emotional Reset Strategies

00:12:00
Speaker
or running right now.
00:12:00
Speaker
I've been training for a half marathon.
00:12:02
Speaker
So a lot of weird stuff comes in my head.
00:12:04
Speaker
Sometimes freaky stuff when I'm running, right?
00:12:07
Speaker
but a lot of cool stuff comes in my head, okay, because it gives you time alone to ponder, just be with your thoughts, to listen to podcasts, and consume good content.
00:12:16
Speaker
So just those last two, getting a new hobby, and then exercise, and I think those are key, you know, throwing some meditation in there too, something I've been trying to start doing more and more.
00:12:25
Speaker
But if you can do that, for me, that helped me cope with a lot of the negative I felt last week.
00:12:31
Speaker
But it's a new week.
00:12:31
Speaker
We're going to get after it.
00:12:33
Speaker
So if you're listening to this and you had a tough week, start doing those things.
00:12:36
Speaker
Remember that this whole sales game is just a big experiment.
00:12:39
Speaker
Take it as a lesson.
00:12:41
Speaker
Learn from it.
00:12:41
Speaker
And I can't wait for you guys to hear from Christian Maroney.
00:12:44
Speaker
He's going to be again on the podcast.
00:12:46
Speaker
Next episode, we're going to hear what he's doing, what he's been up to, how he's continued to up level himself from a year ago when he was last on the podcast.
00:12:54
Speaker
You're not going to want to miss out.
00:12:56
Speaker
This guy is crushing it.
00:12:57
Speaker
So thanks for listening.
00:12:58
Speaker
And sorry, I had to hear my sob story.
00:13:00
Speaker
But hopefully it's okay that I got all vulnerable and just shared what I'm feeling.
00:13:04
Speaker
But that's it.
00:13:05
Speaker
I'm taking it.
00:13:06
Speaker
I'm throwing last week away and I'm starting over.
00:13:08
Speaker
I feel like I was, I don't know, whatever.
00:13:11
Speaker
sucky sport team you can think of right now that just got blown out of the water but those games it's like you don't go back and watch the film you throw it away and you just reset you go to next week so that's what I'm gonna do okay obviously you can't go back and you know learn from the lessons but sometimes you just gotta reset keep moving forward so I hope that helps we'll see you guys on the next episode keep

Promoting Top Episodes Cheat Sheet

00:13:30
Speaker
crushing it and thanks again for listening to the show love you peace out we'll talk soon
00:13:35

What's up, solopreneurs?
00:13:36
Speaker
Hope you enjoyed the episode.
00:13:38
Speaker
Before you run out and start selling more solar yourself, wanted to let you know about an exciting new cheat sheet we created specifically for you in mind.
00:13:49
Speaker
One of the top questions I get asked on Instagram, on Facebook, by our listeners is, Taylor, where should I start?
00:13:56
Speaker
What episodes should I listen to in the podcast?
00:13:59
Speaker
You got too many podcasts, man, because now we have over 200 episodes.
00:14:03
Speaker
So what we've done, we created the top 10 most downloaded, most listened to, and I would say widely accepted, most useful podcasts that we've done here on Solarpreneur.
00:14:16
Speaker
We put them together all in one sheet.
00:14:19
Speaker
So you can go, you can hit the ground running.
00:14:21
Speaker
Especially if you're new, you do not want to not have this sheet.
00:14:26
Speaker
So go download it right now.
00:14:27
Speaker
It's going to be at top10.solarpreneurs.com.
00:14:31
Speaker
Again, that's top10, the number 10,.solarpreneurs.com.
00:14:36
Speaker
Don't forget the S on solarpreneurs.
00:14:39
Speaker
We will have that in the show notes.
00:14:40
