Introduction to Daily Southampton Podcast

officialgspn
Hello and welcome to the Daily Southampton. My name is Greg Elliott and I'm flying solo today with Wild Card Wednesday. Not much for Wild Card. I'm going to be reviewing last night's game against Everton and seeing if there's any lessons we can take from it. So let's get straight into it.

Everton Match Recap

00:00:26
officialgspn
So we sneak past Everton is probably the best way I can put it in a ah not so decisive penalty victory in the Carabao Cup and taking them to a draw in full time, plenty to get into and plenty of observations to go through. So I'm just going to get straight to it.

Impact of Dibling

00:00:49
officialgspn
Where are our goals going to come from? Because yesterday the game, I couldn't see with the exception of maybe Dibling who managed as soon as he came on to make an impact and be as he's shown to be the rest of the season are absolute shining star.
00:01:06
officialgspn
He came on and drove at players and got a couple of shots away. Other than that, I think Aribo had a shot on goal, but the rest of the frontline were absolutely missing.

Critique of Adam Armstrong's Performance

00:01:17
officialgspn
Adam Armstrong was completely invisible through the entire game as far as I could tell. I couldn't see anywhere ah where he did anything particularly useful. And it's a real shame that someone who was such an important part of our season and the championship and our promotion and Obviously the critical goal to get us back into the Premier League when he scored at Wembley. And it's fascinating to me that he's not shown any sort of thing at all in this season so far. He just can't seem to hit the ground running and maybe he just needs a goal to get him back into it. But I really don't think he made any impact at all on the pitch. And that's a real concern.
00:02:03
officialgspn
I don't see where our goals are going to come from. We pass the ball around really well.

Passing Success under Russell Martin

00:02:10
officialgspn
And, you know, as we come to expect from the Russell Martin brand of football, we had a 93% passing success rate in the first half, which when you think about, I how many passes we'd make is, is a particularly high statistic. And, and that's great, but none of it had that cutting edge. Even the goal that we did score came from a set piece and you know a free header and it's a concern it's a concern that needs addressing if we're going to have any success or any hope of survival this season and and you know it's only ah a game with fringe players in the Carabao Cup sure and you know a weakened Everton tide and almost a second 11 for us but it's been persistent throughout the season so far that it's still not clear where the goals
00:03:00
officialgspn
are going to come from in the team. And that is a huge concern. And it's something that we need to get an answer to sooner rather than later, or we're really going to, we're going to fall behind where we need to be. And it's going to be a real struggle to get back into the season from there. Uh, like I mentioned, Diblin, even though he only came on for 20 minutes, made an impact when he came on. And that was great.

Assessment of Fringe Players

00:03:24
officialgspn
Ryan Fraser had a ah particularly strong start to the game. he looked good every time he got on the ball and was you know putting the ball into positions and I guess if someone like a Ross Stewart came onto the pitch earlier and was in there perhaps he would have been getting on the end of some of those that's the sort of thing that we can look to hope for for the rest of the season I guess and but but other than that Corne seems to be missing the final touch in in areas he he looked promising when he got on the ball and definitely had moments of quality through the game and
00:03:58
officialgspn
and some balls that should have been attacked better from a player in the box of any description. Um, but there's still something about and not quite having that final ball when he gets on the ball, which is a concern, but it's nice to see him get some game minutes. And as with this game, it was always going to be important to assess how the fringe players in our team got on getting into that, that starting the game.
00:04:26
officialgspn
Speaking of which, James Bree had a fantastic game. I think he was really decisive and seemed to control a lot of the defence even from his position at full back. I think he's really shown that he's a good option to to have for our team. You know, we've talked on the podcast before about the potential balance of the team with two full backs that play such a forward driving role. And it was nice to see the shape yesterday where James Bree was more of a traditional fullback and more holding, you know, he was still pushing forward and getting down the wing when he needed to, but it was definitely a more conservative approach at fullback and really commanded the defense and did well from it, especially combined nicely with Charlie Taylor, who did play that more progressive sort of role was definitely more amongst it and more in the box and up around the forward area a lot.
00:05:23
officialgspn
and He eased into the game and got a lot better as the game went on. It was a few shaky moments at the start where it sort of looked like a real concern. But as the game went on, I think he really improved and and I guess showed that fallback is probably one of our strongest areas of depth on the pitch at the moment. um And I don't think there would be any grumbles to see and you know any of these players rotated in.

Defensive Performance Issues

00:05:48
officialgspn
ah Nathan Wood played in defense and it wasn't the most confidence inspiring g performance. It wasn't an awful performance by any stretch of the imagination, but, you know, against a better team, there were plenty of mistakes, not just from him, but from Howard Bellis as well. Um, the in against even a slightly better team, we're just going to get absolutely punished for. Um, and that's a concern. You know, if we're going to be struggling to score, we need to be the most solid we can be in.
00:06:21
officialgspn
I can think of four or five different times where if the ball fell to an Everton player, or if Everton were, you know, even slightly more critical in front of goal, um, because Everton were very poor. If we're being honest, they, they did not play like a team that were going to beat us. And we didn't really look like a team that were going to beat them for the second half. I don't think we looked like a goal was going to be coming from anywhere.

So yeah, the defence have talked about Nathan Wood and the mistakes we made across the back line as a whole that potentially would have cost us in a ah game against a better opposition. An interest in performance was Harwood Bellis, who I think, although he did make two or three of those similar mistakes, especially later in the game, um he was actually very solid. He had a much better game.
00:08:01
officialgspn
Definitely a better game than he had in either of those games at the start of the season where we've speculated that, you know, a back five definitely didn't really suit him. But he, he showed that he is definitely almost better captain material than Jack Stevens. In my opinion, he commanded the back line and, and stepped up and made some, you know, really important challenges and blocks and.
00:08:26
officialgspn
obviously scored the goal as well. managed to free himself into some space and get that free header, um, and put it in the back of the net. And that's, that's great. That's exactly what we're going to need. If we're going to be struggling to create the cutthroat chances up front, then to do well from attacking set pieces is clearly going to be important. And it's something that I think for the rest of the season has been a real concern. There's been a lot of times where I question why when we've got a free kick, sort of in the final third or or even slightly, slightly back, but in the opponent's half, why we're knocking the ball short still instead of just, you know, taking a chance and putting one in the mixer. I think, I think it's something we should be doing more of just to give us that edge and something else. I know that the style that that Russell White wants to impose is that passing and that's the way it's going to be created, but just to mix it up,
00:09:23
officialgspn
Even three or four times through the game, instead of continuing to knock it short and do the same thing, it's it's great. And it shows that that's there as ah so ability. The ability in the air to get to that was ah was good. I think Big Lez had a ah pretty good game. There were a couple of moments where he almost tried to over-engineer something and force something that was a bit too much to ask of him. But these are all the sort of thing that Uh, you know, we'll come with the game time and he's definitely got so much potential. Um, and you know, also in the shape we were playing, isn't not even necessarily how we're going to be expecting him to play. If we're expecting him to play alongside Flynn downs in the sort of pivot and rotational number six role, you know, those little bits of trying to do too much in a game where he's got that extra support, you know, some of them will come good and that's.
00:10:22
officialgspn
a sign, but he looks like a player when he gets on the ball, instantly thinks about the progressive play and progressing play forward. And he's just an absolute beast. It seems to absolutely physically dominate the midfield. And it's, uh, it's great. It's, it's real so good signs for us. I think, uh, also in the midfield, I think a Rebo had a reasonably good game. I mentioned earlier about, you know, him being one of the players who got closest to scoring for sure. Um,
00:10:51
officialgspn
But again, he showed that he he definitely, after the 60 minute mark, seemed to have a lot less about him, looked like he was struggling a lot more with fitness. So that's something we're going to have to keep an eye on and manage the minutes. The Lana in the first half was the absolute focal point of the team. And it was fantastic. um It just doesn't look like he's missed a step. He didn't manage to create a huge amount, but Every time he got the ball, the pass was progressive. And, you know, if you can put that into some slightly more aggressive areas in a slightly more forward thinking way is definitely shows that he's going to be an impact player for us.
00:11:38
officialgspn
It's clear to me that Lelana is going to have a big part to play in our season. It was great to see him for 45 minutes. um And it's clear that we're going to manage his minutes. You know, he's no spring chicken, but if he can make that positive impact that we're hoping for, I'm sure it will be a big help. And, you know, it's just great to see him back in a Saint's shirt,

Alex McCarthy's Goalkeeping Praise

00:13:07
officialgspn
Now, he had a lot of criticism throwing his way at the start of the season. And obviously, you know, brought in Aaron Ramsdale to replace him and absolutely fantastic signing in my opinion. and But Alex McCarthy showed last night how good he can be. He had an absolutely an amazing game. His was absolutely fine. There were no concerns at all.
00:13:31
officialgspn
He made two incredible game saving saves ah in one-on-one positions that kept us in the game and got us to the point. And of course, he he made that big save in the penalty shootout, which put us through to the to the next round. And I haven't got a bad word to say about McCarthy and his performance. It was just absolutely out of this world. And it's great to see because, you know, there might become a point in the season where We need him to step up as a number two and to show that he still has that quality. And, you know, even the week before we signed Ramsdale, you know, I had high praise for McCarthy and the way he performed, you know, he, he obviously was at fault at the start of the season in the new castle game, but it's, you know, since that point, I think he really stepped up and up to his game. And yeah, he was outstanding last night and it really is, it inspires confidence that if, uh,
00:14:28
officialgspn
any reason at all we and end up in a position where we're not going to have Ramsdale at least there's some confidence knowing that McCarthy is capable at least in some small ways of stepping up and making that position his so that was fantastic to see. Brerton Diaz for me it was made a bit of an impact when he came on and but it's still yet to prove to me the potential that I was hoping for when we signed him so and you know that's more or less covered I guess the whole team front to back it's interesting that we there was I personally threw a lot of criticism at the team for their mentality after the United game and their heads dropping and you know there were signs of none of that when we went behind um and you know it was another
00:15:26
officialgspn
sloppy goal another set piece which i'll talk about in a minute but it was important to show that we weren't going to let our heads drop from that and we managed to bounce back and get back in the game and ultimately go on to progress in the cup and whilst the one all draws not not a massive level of inspiration for anyone to take it is still a result and you know i think it puts us in really good steadying heading into saturday which is um inevitably going to be a crucial game So the last thing I want to talk about is, is the goal we conceded

Set Piece Defense Concerns

00:16:01
officialgspn
and set pieces. And it's so frustrating to continually not get to the second ball of a set piece. Like why is no one chasing that ball out and get into it? It's time and time again, we saw it against United and we've seen it again against Everton. You know, we get the ball cleared away more often than not.
00:16:24
officialgspn
from set pieces but it's the second ball that gets us every time and it seems like it's a routine it's going to be a part of a problem for us throughout the rest of the season i really hope it's something that we can get rid of because it's so frustrating you know if you concede to a world-class finish out of nowhere from a moment of brilliance it kind of is what is but from a ah second ball on a set piece it's just so frustrating and It really needs to not be the case. I think it's really the, the main thing we need to focus on is to stop. And, you know, it's, it's interesting. We talked before about losses and we had a set piece coach and it seems that Matt Gilles picked up that slack in his role and is the the mastermind of the set pieces. But is it in position that actually we should think about backfilling and get in because it's,
00:17:20
officialgspn
It's a third or fourth time this season and it's a real concern. It's really something we need to get sorted out, but at least from the attacking perspective, you know, we got a goal from a set piece and a goal, a non penalty goal from open play. And hopefully these are the things we're going to need to find because it's going to be a real struggle otherwise. Um, but you know, onto Ipswich.
00:17:46
officialgspn
and hopefully an important game where hopefully we all the key players will step up and we'll get something out of it.
