Kim Possible Movie: A Strong Female Lead

00:02:08
Speaker
That's right. We watched Kim Possible movie. So the drama. What a fantastic way to intro it.
00:02:13
Speaker
Thank you. I have sprinkled lingo throughout this entire intro, so you're welcome. Oh, I'm so excited. You can't not. This is the time. I know, right? And we're definitely going to talk about the lingo in this movie and the impact of the show and all that jazz. But first, we're going to chat about the impact of Miss KP before we dive into the movie recap, shall we? Do it.
00:02:37
Speaker
Kim Possible, the TV show, ran from 2002 to 2007 and quickly became one of Disney Channel's top rated and most popular series. Creators Bob Schulie and Mark McCorkle said the series was born out of the realization that there were so few animated series starring strong female characters that women could look up to. And so they created Kim, inspired by their own daughters. Is that not the cutest thing you've ever heard in your life?
00:03:00
Speaker
I love that. I know. The Kim Possible movie was released in 2005 and was the first animated DCOM. It was originally intended to be the series finale, but Disney Channel renewed the series and the fourth season continued after the events of the movie.
00:03:16
Speaker
if you remember season four of Kim Possible. We're big fans. The film stars the voice acting of Christy Carlson Romano, Raven Simone, Will Friedel, Nancy Cartwright, Gary Cole, and so, so many more.

Personal Connections & Plot Overview

00:03:29
Speaker
I watched Kim Possible every single day after school as a kid, and this movie was so the drama for me. So I am very excited to get the sitch on this movie. Are you ready, Cabbie?
00:03:40
Speaker
I am so ready. I love all of the voice actors in this. They're all stunning in this movie. All, you know, one hour and nine minutes or whatever it is just brought so much nostalgia and so much joy. Yes, it really does. Well, with that, shall we get into our recap?
00:03:58
Speaker
Yeah, let's do it. All right, this movie opens just right off the bat with an intense rescue mission. We are in the middle of Tokyo, where a massive parade is happening. And right in the middle of the parade, Shigo and Dr. Draken kidnapped the president of the world's leading toy company, Nakasumi Toys. But not to fear, because Kim and Ron are on it.
00:04:19
Speaker
They fight some ninjas, Ron explodes his own pants, and they rescue the toymaker Mr. Nakasumi and his assistant, who, I must add, is also the voice of Jude D in Avatar The Last Airbender? I heard it and immediately within one line ki completely freaked out.
00:04:36
Speaker
Yeah, I know. She totally is. That's hilarious. Yes. She also, I don't know if you know this, she is also Julie in Friends. She dates Ross in like season one or two or something. Oh yeah. The one that he like, ah doesn't he like meet her on a fossil trip and he brings her back and Rachel's like, what? Exactly. Yes, it's so good. And Rachel's like, Julie, it's Julie. So anyways, that was like me when I found out. I'm like, it's Julie. It's Judy. So yeah, she's great.
00:05:06
Speaker
and She has a very small part in this movie, but I just love her. Okay, so this is the first like weird incident in the movie. Kim and Wade cannot figure out why Draken is motivated to kidnap this toy maker. Once Kim gets home the next morning, we learn that her father has been working for three years and spent $3 billion dollars with a B on some massive project.
00:05:29
Speaker
Yeah, which he almost deletes all the files for. Oops. But then he says it wouldn't even be a big deal if he deleted them because the project lives completely in his head. Jump sideways. Shego has a meeting with Dr. Draken in which she tries to uncover what secret project he has been working on to take over the world. All of his research seems to be erratic and disconnected. And while he assures her that he knows what he's doing, she is less than convinced. But mostly she's just annoyed that she can't figure it out.
00:05:59
Speaker
Because, we should say, if you don't watch the series, Draken is not the smartest evil villain in the world and usually his plans are quite dumb, so she goes annoyed that she ah can't understand this one.
00:06:12
Speaker
Yeah, back to Kim and Ron at school that same day we learn about the main plot of this movie, which is that the prom is coming up. And all of the popular guys already have dates with the popular girls on the cheer squad and Kim is the only one left without a date, which means that she will probably have to go with Ron, thus cementing her status as a social act cast.
00:06:32
Speaker
and she absolutely cannot have that. Kim talks to her best friend Monique who is voiced by the iconic Raven Simone and expresses her concern that her crime-fighting, girl-boss image may be too intimidating for the guys at school. Monique reminds her that she is strong and amazing and should hold out for someone who can handle all that she is, but Kim is not too convinced. We also learn about the second most important plot point of this movie,
00:06:55
Speaker
someone has bought out the Bueno Nacho company and brought in new management that is changing everything. This fact essentially sends Ron into a complete tailspin and motivates him to start a petition to bring back Nacho Night. He will basically talk of nothing else for the rest of this movie. Yes, and briefly, I have to jump in. um In case nobody knows what a Nacho is, it is um Nachos in a taco, which Ron invented during the series. So the Nacho, everyone.
00:07:22
Speaker
He's

Drakken's Scheme & The Climax

00:07:23
Speaker
like butthurt for personal reasons. This isn't just like oh somebody he doesn't know anything about. This is a big deal. His life is Kim and this restaurant. Two very important things. Wade alerts the team that Dr. Dracken has been spotted at the Bermuda Triangle, which is actually a nearby hotel, and Kim and Ron head off to stop him.
00:07:45
Speaker
At that hotel, Dr. Dracken attempts to negotiate with a man known as ah Big Daddy to recover information about Cybertronic technology. After a hilarious game of cat and mouse between the two of them, Big Daddy reveals that only one man can help Dracken and it's Dr. James Timothy, possible Kim's dad.
00:08:04
Speaker
du drama In the meantime, Ron enters himself in a high-stakes game of poker and loses, Kim fights Shigo in formal wear, and Draken and Shigo escape once again. Back at school, Kim sulks about not having a day to the prom, Ron obsesses over his petition to bring back Knock-O-Night, and then we meet Eric.
00:08:26
Speaker
Eric is the hunky new guy at school who rides a motorcycle and immediately befriends Ron. They bond over their love of naked mole rats and motor scooters. However, as soon as Ron realizes that Eric kind of has a thing for Kim, their friendship comes to a fast finish. Kim, however, falls hard for Eric and we get a romantic musical montage of them falling in love to the smooth voice of Jesse McCartney. Aw, yeah. I loved every second.
00:08:54
Speaker
One night while Eric is having dinner with Kim and her family, they realize that Dr. Possible is late coming home for pizza night. We flash sideways and learn that Dr. Draken has kidnapped Dr. Possible and is attempting to steal his $3 billion dollars project from him. Dr. Possible uses voice recognition technology to delete the entire project and assures Draken it's not a problem because the whole thing exists inside his head. Kim and Ron discover what's happened and go immediately to recover her dad. And after fighting off Draken's new synthodrones,
00:09:24
Speaker
which are just synthetic people like robots full of goo. They recover her dad and bring him home. look I mean, you're not wrong. No, this is the actual plot of the movie. There's like so many elements and that's kind of the idea, right? Is Dragon has all these weird elements going on at once and you're like, how did these fit together?
00:09:44
Speaker
But they do. They all come together. They do. So ah the problem is when they get Kim's dad home, he has no memories of what's happened to him in the lair. The next day, Kim and Monique discuss Draken's potential motivations for stealing her dad while they shop for prom dresses. They run into Eric, who tells Kim she definitely should buy a beautiful blue dress.
00:10:05
Speaker
Meanwhile, in the lair, Shigo is also attempting to decode Draken's evil plan. She realizes that so far he has stolen toy designs, top secret cybertronic technology, upgrades for his goo, synthodrones, and teenager junk. She can't put the pieces together. Draken assures her that if she, who is smarter than Kim possible, can't figure out the plan, then Kim can't either.
00:10:29
Speaker
ah The movie then heads towards its final climax as we flash back to Mr. Nakasumi in Japan, the president of the toy company from the beginning. He realizes that his latest design has been stolen and used to make a little collectible toys called little diablos, and they're being put in the new Bueno Nachos kids meals.
00:10:49
Speaker
Kids around the world are going crazy collecting these toys until almost every child in the world has at least one. Ron sinks deeper into his depression with the new bueno nacho management implementing all these new kids meals. And this sullen attitude prompts a little fight between him and Kim in their old tree house after which Kim leaves with Eric and Eric finally asks her to go with him to the prom and Kim says yes.
00:11:13
Speaker
Ron processes their fight in his room with Rufus as he's getting ready for the prom himself and through his processing realizes that something special has been there between him and Kim the whole time and he needs to finally tell her how he feels. But he freaks himself out thinking what telling her might do to their friendship and he bails on his whole plan and goes to Bueno Nacho instead. He's comfort place.
00:11:34
Speaker
Once there, Ron is oblivious, as Ned, his friend behind the counter, tries to tell him that something evil is happening at Bueno Nacho. But the only evil Ron can see is that they have now taken away his bendy straws, and that is the last straw off for Ron. He goes to call corporate and give them a piece of his mind. But upon doing so, he realizes that the new manager who bought Bueno Nacho Corporation is none other than, I bet you can guess it, Dr. Draken.
00:12:01
Speaker
Wild twist. ah know Another factor in his plan. Immediately after making this realization, Ron is swarmed by an army of little Diablo toys that have come to life and he barely escapes on his scooter to go find Kim.
00:12:16
Speaker
Meanwhile, at the prom, Eric and Kim are dancing, having a good time. Ron continues calling her back to back to back, and Eric and Monique convince Kim not to answer her phone and to just have fun, which leads Ron to crash the prom to get Kim to help him. Now, this last bit gets pretty long, and there's a lot of detail. So if you want to know exactly what happens, just go watch the movie. It's literally an hour and nine minutes. But basically, Dragon's plan this whole time has been to take over the world by means of these little Diablo toys.
00:12:45
Speaker
and they're being controlled by the same technology that he stole from Dr. Possible's brain. He and Shigo plan to strike the world with the toys at midnight, but they instead decide to strike Kim's hometown immediately because she's on her way to stop them. The little diablos become massive robots and begin taking over the city, but Kim and Ron use an electromagnetic scrambler gun that Wade made for them to shut down the attack.
00:13:09
Speaker
Oh, and we also learned that Kim's boyfriend Eric was actually a synthodrome the whole time and he disgustingly melts into nothingless goo after being bitten by Rufus, the naked mole rat. This is really how the movie ends. Chase saw that part. Chase is, I should say, my husband has

Kim & Ron's Evolving Relationship

00:13:25
Speaker
seen this movie before, but he hasn't seen it in probably 20 years. And that part happened and he went, oh no. It's so creepy and gross when he gets all skinny and like shrivels up. Oh, it's terrible.
00:13:38
Speaker
ah So Kim defeats Shigo, Ron finally gets dragged in to admit that he knows his name, and Ron and Kim finally go back to the prom, but this time as a couple.
00:13:50
Speaker
Bonnie, Kim's nemesis at school, annoyingly tries to make everyone laugh at them finally dating, but instead the school erupts into cheers. And the audience does too. Kim and Ron dance. They kiss. Finally, a kiss at the end of a decum, may I just say? And that is Kim Possible. So the drama. So the drama. I literally ah'll just love it. I love Kim so much.
00:14:17
Speaker
It's so good. Go watch it. It's amazing. It is so good. It's so funny too. Like that's honestly what I loved about Kim Possible growing up, like the show, is it's so funny. Yeah, it's just very lighthearted fun. It's easy to watch. It's like smooth and enjoyable. I at no point was like, oh, I have to watch this for the podcast. Like it was actually so much fun. Right. And it's like filled with so, so much nostalgia for like childhood.
00:14:45
Speaker
Because like all those characters in Dr. Dragon and Chigo and even like her twin brothers, Tim and Jim and both her parents, the Dr. Possibles, like just every single character is so fun and like fully developed. And I just like honestly just enjoyed it so much.
00:15:05
Speaker
Yeah, it's so much fun. I don't have quite the same level of nostalgia because I didn't watch it as much as a kid, but I mean, I loved it. And it's just a good time all around. The whole thing with the Dr. Possibles is so cute. They're just a sweet family. And it's refreshing after all these other movies where I'm just like, a happy, sweet, wonderful family. Nice.
00:15:26
Speaker
Right and they're both incredibly smart and incredibly I think good parents I don't know like maybe someone can argue with me and the fact that they let their 16 year old daughter go on these international missions and all that I feel like they're really good parents.
00:15:41
Speaker
I think they are too. They're very sincere and they're open and honest and ah vulnerable, but also like they have these like hysterical little like quips back and forth with each other and just like even like the whole like they have pizza night and they've invited Eric. Like it just, without saying it overtly, they're just a very healthy, happy family. Yes, I totally agree.
00:16:03
Speaker
Okay, funny, all I can hear is Eric because I think the last podcast episode is when I discovered from you that Ron is voiced by Eric from Boy Meets World and that was literally all I could hear the entire movie. His voice is so distinct, like so distinct.
00:16:22
Speaker
Not in a bad way. I think he's incredible as Ron. I think it's the perfect casting. but like yeah no Once you know it, you can't unhear it. You can't. It made me even happier. I was like, this only makes it better for me. He has so much like to go on a casting rant for a moment or an acting rant, I guess. Yay, casting rants from Natalie.
00:16:43
Speaker
He specifically puts so much character and emotion into every line. Like you can see and hear and feel everything that Ron is feeling because like, even though the animation might be, I mean, the I think the animation is good, but like, you know, it might be simple. You get so much from his performance that you completely just understand the story just from his voice alone.
00:17:11
Speaker
Yes, I actually think he's a phenomenal actor. And I think that might be something people would debate because he's silly, like the characters he plays are very like goofy and over the top and somewhat obnoxious at times. But I think the way he's able to integrate that level of silliness with the level of emotion and depth that he brings, like, okay, I'm going to go on a side quest here and talk about Eric because I just I want to talk about Eric.
00:17:36
Speaker
oh The way that they ruined Eric's character at the end of Boy Meets World like hurts my heart because he was one of the best characters, I think, in the earlier seasons of Boy Meets World. and I think this actor does such a great job marrying this humor and like kind of the comedic relief with this highly intelligent and very emotionally intelligent character. and I know he has instances of that towards the end of the series, but like ultimately I feel like he just became a punching bag. And that made me sad because I think the actor is worth so much more than that.
00:18:08
Speaker
I can partially agree with you here. First of all, yes, I think Will Friedle is an excellent actor. Excellent. Eric is my favorite character on Boy Meets World. And honestly, Ron might be my favorite character from Kim Possible. However, again, while on a Boy Meets World rant, I freaking love the final seasons of Boy Meets World when he like becomes like a squirrel man and like like where is roo has a be i I don't care what you say. I think that's the funniest thing in the world Wait, that is that's one episode where they do like a what if flash forward? That's not like really arid And then like when he's on a spoiler alert when he shows up on girl meets world and he's like kind of the same Oh my gosh. Oh, I haven't seen that
00:18:59
Speaker
Oh no, I, anyway, okay, we need to get back to Kim Possible. I just think he's so great and I just needed to take a moment to give him all the credit and I think he's great as Ron too. The whole scene where he's like walking himself through if he loves Kim or not when he's getting ready for the prom and he goes on this journey ah just by himself. Like he has no one that he's working off of other than Rufus who is not actually saying words And he just goes on this journey from like, I'm so upset. I need to tell her I'm going to tell her I can't do it. That would ruin our friendship. Never mind. I'm going to bueno nacho. And I'm just like along for the ride so hard. I just yeah i just think that's such talent that you can carry us on that journey and also be as goofy as you are. Oh, for sure. And I think we talked about it a little at the top, but Kim is such like
00:19:48
Speaker
a feminist icon and female role model like the show creators literally specifically created the show and Kim to be a strong female lead that would inspire young women.
00:19:59
Speaker
But I also like want to take a moment to talk about how like I really feel like Ron is such a good male role model, right? Because he teaches young men how to be like vulnerable and funny and be OK with being who they are and also like let a woman take the lead and not feel like undermined by ah a strong female in his life. And I also just love that like he is who he is. And I feel like that is a lesson that young men struggle with, specifically in high school, like being who you are and not like putting on this this face of who you think everyone wants you to be. I mean, women struggle with that too, right? But I feel like right we talk about it more than men do.
00:20:43
Speaker
Yeah. And never once does Ron question, should I change for her? He's just like, she'll either take me or leave me and I'll just deal with that. and i love Exactly. Yeah. I've got to give a little shout out real quick. I really, I think I mentioned this in the last podcast too, but Ron Stoppable reminds me so much of my husband. And I think that's why watching this back, I haven't watched Kim Possible since being married um three years ago. But I like watching this movie was being like, Oh, okay. Like i I see it. Like I married Ron Stoppable and I'm really proud of that. Yes. Because I can see that in chase. He's like so supportive always has your back like
00:21:28
Speaker
is willing to take a back seat but is not weak or ah yeah passive or anything like that. Passive, thank you. Yes, I was trying to think of that word um because like Chase and Ron both have such strength and talent um and also can like recognize and lift up the strength and talent of their ladies.
00:21:48
Speaker
Right and I i mean a little pat on my back here is I think I'm a think I'm a pretty like strong female and ah I appreciate that Kim showed me kind of that it's okay to be that and yes she has moments even in this movie talking about like do you think people are intimidated by me being like this type of person but she only thinks it for a second before being like nah it doesn't matter because this is who I am.
00:22:13
Speaker
who And also thanks to Monique, who I loved. Yeah, I love Monique. I think that, like I said before, every character in this show and in this movie is just like solidly good and fleshed out. And I'm just a big fan of that. Agree. But you this is a good um segue. We talked about my relationship with my husband.
00:22:34
Speaker
I kind of had this like little question pop up in my brain that's like, are the best romances the ones that begin as friendships? And I know that that's your story with with your husband. So yeah explore that a little bit. I love this. Oh, my goodness. So much fun. I love any time we get to talk about my relationship with Nick because I just love him so much. um So I will say, for starters, we were not friends nearly as long as Ron and Kim were. I think.
00:23:01
Speaker
They dragged it on. Because they were like best friends since preschool, right? Yeah. Okay. Yeah. No, I met Nick about nine months before we started dating. So not even very, very long, but yeah, no, we became best friends first. And I am so grateful for that time because we just continued to be best friends into their relationship.
00:23:22
Speaker
um We also had a really unique situation in that we started officially dating after the pandemic had like begun. We were just a couple months into the pandemic, so everything was like real bad. and ah so Our you know friendship and relationship became like a real light spot in my life during that dark time. and but The funny thing is we joke about it now. We didn't actually date. We were like, hey, we're best friends. Hey, we're best friends that like like each other.
00:23:49
Speaker
want to keep doing the exact same thing we've been doing because like we can't leave our house. We just like watched movies and like hung out and like didn't date and we couldn't like leave the house until months after we had started dating. um and so It took a really long time for us to actually have that like dating experience.
00:24:08
Speaker
and i love that. like I'm so grateful because we just got to like hang out and have no pressure. There was no like, oh my gosh, what's he thinking? like This is uncomfortable or weird. like It was just like there was butterflies, but it was mostly just like I'm with my person. I'm with my comfort person that's like been here for me even before there were feelings. you know Yes, I love that. and I really do like to bring it back. I feel like that's a Kim and Ron thing.
00:24:36
Speaker
I feel like we watch some DCOMs and we're like, I don't know if that relationship lasts. I really yeah feel in my heart that Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable stick it through. Yeah. And not to go on to a whole tangent about you know dating and relationships and marriage, but ultimately, if you get married,
00:24:55
Speaker
you're going to want to be your spouse's best friend and you're going to want them to be yours. Not saying they should be your only friend, but they should be your best friend. like You should be comfortable with them and be able to have fun with them. like That's the only way you're going to last a lifetime together. so like The sooner you can get that in play, the better. I'm glad that for us it was so early on that we were just really good friends because it's more fun to have a bro than a bow, I think. Put that on a t-shirt. I love that.
00:25:25
Speaker
I mean, I love being all flirty and fun and we get dressed up and then we get home and I'm like, done with this. Let's put on sweatpants and not care. Play video games. It's only fun to do that when it's special. The everyday is like the chill. Yeah, Ron and Kim have that so hard already. I love how she goes from dress shopping and being all girly to like literally being in a lake in the mud with him. And I'm just like, LOL, that's perfect. I love you guys are so comfortable and like down to do whatever together. Yes. I also think that is one of the best parts about their relationship is that they trust each other so much. Like when Ron comes into the prom and he's like screaming and he's like, these robots were here and they came alive. And what's his name? Eric.
00:26:14
Speaker
Eric, yes, Eric, like tries to discredit him. And Kim is like, no, no, like, let's at least check into this. Like, you can tell she kind of doesn't believe him, but she trusts him enough to be like, let me look into this. Because if he thinks something is wrong, I want to make sure something isn't wrong. So like, I just love that they like trust each other so much. And Ron does anything that Kim tells him to do on a mission. Like she's like, you're the distraction. Go do this. He's like, done.
00:26:43
Speaker
She says, you would need to go do this and I need to go do this. He says, done. He says, I trust your brain. I trust that you always have a plan and things are going to work out. They are always there for each other. And I love that.
00:26:53
Speaker
Yes, I am so glad you brought up the prom robot thing because I was so amazed that it didn't go the direction of her being like, oh my gosh, you're so lame. I'm going back to the dance. And she was just like, no, yeah, we should definitely look into this. I was like, thank you. Thank you, Kim, for like validating him in this way. That validation means so much. And I was so relieved and grateful for it. And and if it had gone any other way, it would have been disrespectful to the last three seasons of Kim Possible.
00:27:23
Speaker
Because like their

Audience Reviews & Critiques

00:27:24
Speaker
friendship is so established and their trust for each other is so established that if she did that in the movie, everyone would be like, no, I don't buy it. I don't believe it. Yeah, not canon. Yeah. You know what's funny is he has not exactly proven that he's always going to make the best decisions, but he has proven time and time again that he will recover well and he will still make it you know work for her and like be there for what she needs.
00:27:48
Speaker
um So it's hilarious to me that he can like literally make every wrong decision and it still turns out right. And it still works out being like the best thing for them. And I think she realizes that like she sees it. She doesn't need to be she doesn't need a character arc of like, Oh, the whole time Ron like she knows in her heart. but She's just kind of fighting it at the beginning.
00:28:07
Speaker
right yeah like What she's fighting is not, do I like Ron? She's fighting, am I okay with dating someone who's not the most popular guy? and Ultimately, she's like, what a dumb question. Of course I am. yeah Because it's Ron. Because it's Ron. Because it's Ron.
00:28:24
Speaker
um So clearly we love this movie. It's so great. What is the public's opinion? Yes, our public opinion. So no tomato meter, only two critics reviews. That is so insulting. That's so insulting. I know. Every critic needs to go watch at this movie and review it now in 2024. I agree. Maybe I didn't look it up, but maybe for the show there's more because that was the case with the Lizzie McGuire movie was there was like hardly any critics reviews, but on the show there was a ton. Oh yeah, I'd imagine so.
00:28:55
Speaker
I mean, it was like one of the highest rated Disney shows of all time, so it had to be. Yeah, I'm sure they do. But our popcorn meter has 5000 plus ratings and leaves us at 73%. Okay, I'm okay with that. I am okay with that. Yeah, it's average. I mean, it's good.
00:29:14
Speaker
All of them are unknown. We don't know any of these people. First review left four stars. They said a very entertaining addition to the Kim Possible mythos filled with the signature comedy, character interactions, and dialogue that you'd expect from the film rounding out with a strong emotional ending. DCOM's first animated film in the brand makes a strong impression. Yeah, love it. And actually, until I read that review, I didn't know it was Disney's first animated DCOM. And so I'm glad you brought that up at the beginning.
00:29:44
Speaker
Okay. Unknown part dos. Three stars, so the mediocre. It wasn't bad in the sense that it came on Disney channel for free, but seriously, if you watched any of the series, then you would have guessed how it ended roughly 12 seconds in. Rude. But I had to round it out with a somewhat negative one.
00:30:01
Speaker
yeah But like does it matter? Does it matter that we knew that how it was going to end? Because the whole time you were like, yes, this needs to end this way. You've seen superhero movies. You know how every single superhero movie ends, except for Endgame, but that was different. So like come on.
00:30:18
Speaker
The best part of a movie is the journey, right? So whether you know how it ends or not, you don't know how they're going to get there and that's the fun part. The anticipation throughout the plot makes everything worth it. Yes. All right. We're going to move on because they're wrong. Third Unknown leaves four stars and says, I like to think that the Kim Possible series ended with this movie. It was such a perfect end to the series and better than any TV movie has any right to be.
00:30:46
Speaker
I mean, it was great, but I also loved Kid Possible season four, so. I can't remember. How does it end? Did they date? Like, did they continue dating? Yeah, it's like it's exploring their relationship, right? And it's like, again, they continue to be best friends, but with like some romance, but it's just more of, it's more of the same, right? She's saving the world and he's there. Cool, cool, cool. He's saving the world too. I mean, he contributes. I mean, he also does save the world. He contributes. There was one review. I don't have their full review written down here, but it was pretty funny. It just said something along the lines of people shouldn't animate kissing.

Career Updates & Voice Acting Appeal

00:31:21
Speaker
I thought that was kind of funny. Potentially not. But here we are. All right, Natalie, where are they now? Yeah, so we have discussed what Christy Carlson Romano, who voices Kim, has been up to in our episode on Cadet Kelly. So you can go back and listen to that. But honestly, OK, listen, I wasn't going to do this, but I'm going to do it. She's so fun that like here's just a quick recap.
00:31:45
Speaker
um After her Disney Channel stuff, she continued acting. She went to Broadway. She played Belle in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. um More recently, she's done podcasting, producing, directing, hosting, all the things. She's married. She has two kids. She talks very vulnerably about her Disney fame ups and downs and like her life afterwards, including her struggles with mental health. She's just an icon. We absolutely love her. What a woman.
00:32:14
Speaker
Who else? Who else? What happened to Will? All right, so moving on, Will Friedel, who voices Ron Stoppable, is probably best known, as we've already mentioned, for his role as older brother Eric in the TV show Boy Meets World.
00:32:26
Speaker
um He has had a long career in voice acting with like an endless list that you should definitely go and look up. He has made occasional on-screen appearances, like when he reprised his role of Eric Matthews in Girl Meets World. But he's mostly stuck to voice acting and some podcasting, which he says is a deliberate choice um because on-screen acting gives him too much anxiety these days. And I love that he's vulnerable about that. Aww.
00:32:52
Speaker
And he's so talented with his voice. What an instrument. I know. What a great guy. I'm kind of glad that's what he kept doing. Yeah. The voice of Rufus, which is Ron Stoppable's beloved naked mole rat, was provided by Nancy Cartwright, a highly, highly successful and well-known voice actress, best known for her iconic role as Bart Simpson on The Simpsons, which is a role that she has voiced since 1989. Did you know that? Whoa, I had no idea. I didn't even know Rufus was a girl.
00:33:24
Speaker
Yeah. Outside of The Simpsons, she's also voiced characters in a huge variety of animated series and films, including Rugrats, Animadiacs, The Critic, The Replacements, and a whole bunch more. Wow. Good for her. I know. She is hugely involved in philanthropic work, especially when it comes to youth literacy and arts education.
00:33:45
Speaker
final tidbit that is worth mentioning, just because I saw it and couldn't not say anything about it. um She is an active member of the Church of Scientology, and she often defends the religion from its many, many criticisms. And I just find that very interesting. Interesting. We are all for religious freedom here, but interesting.
00:34:11
Speaker
Anyway, regarding the rest of the cast, everyone is still working. Raven Simone we covered in a previous episode, I think it was the Xenon episode, um the voices of Dr. Draken, both of Kim's parents, Shigo, they are all actively still working both in voice and on camera work and they are seeing success from both of those mediums. so Everyone is still working. Everyone is doing great. And we are so, so excited that there's so many amazing people in this movie, like award-winning actors that decided to be in this little DCOM big old fan. If you want to see more, you can definitely look them up on IMDB.
00:34:48
Speaker
I don't know what it is about animated movies or movies where there's an opportunity for like a huge voice cast, but they just bring in all the stars. like if When it rains, it pours. like Anytime there's a movie that they're like, most of it's just going to be voice acting. They're like, bring in every Oscar winner we've ever had, all your favorites, like like the movie If that has Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski, who are not just voice actors in that. They're like actor actors in that.
00:35:18
Speaker
And then everyone else and their mother that you've ever heard of is in that movie. And I was like, oh my gosh, I don't know what it is, but it makes me so happy because it's like an Easter egg hunt. You're like, I know that voice. Where do I know them from? And you look it up on IMDB and you have the biggest scream and it's the best. Yeah. And I feel like I don't want to say voice acting.
00:35:37
Speaker
isn't hard because I am very aware that it is very difficult and animated films take a million years to make because of how much work goes into it. But I do feel like there is this element of actors going, oh, I can go to work in my sweatpants and not put on makeup.
00:35:54
Speaker
sign me up. So I think that check famous actors are big fans of voice work for that part alone. And also the behind the scenes, like producers, filmmakers and such, ah it's it's a lot of work still. Like I won't say it's not, but it is significantly reduced or at least a different type of work.
00:36:16
Speaker
when you're not adding the video component. We have mentioned this in possibly every episode. There's a reason we don't have a video component and it's because I don't want to die young and it's so much work to include video, even if you just do like your 1080 camcorder on your whatever recording device.
00:36:35
Speaker
It's so much work to edit video and to get things set up. And then yes, if you add like actors and sets and lights and cameras and everything, makeup, all that, like, it is such a process. Yeah. And aren't our lovely voices enough for you? For me? Yeah, it's great. For the audience. Oh, yes, this should be enough. Maybe one day, ah you know, if we ever like make this our full time job, maybe we'll give you some video. But ah for now,

I know a lot of people who got into figure skating when we were young because of this movie. Okay, see, for me, I want to do figure skating because of the movie Ice Princess. Yeah.
00:38:15
Speaker
I will say my husband has wanted to watch this one. He's seen it on Disney Plus and gotten excited about it. um It seems like it's about figure skating and maybe also hockey or both, do you know? Because she's like wearing hockey skates in the picture. Yeah, I think it's... I mean, like I don't want to spoil it too much, but I think it's one of those things where she does one and then they need her for the other and then like she learns to love both. you know Oh, okay. Well, I'm excited. I think. I always get nervous with the ones I haven't seen before. And I'm like, oh, am I gonna like it? Nine times out of 10, you like the ones you haven't seen before. That's so true. so Okay, everyone go watch Go Figure and we will see you next week. Yay. And please also leave a rating and review ah wherever you listen to your podcast or a like and a comment if you're on YouTube. Yay. Yeah, see you guys next week.
