What? What? What? is What? What did I just watch?

Welcome, fellow Disney Channel babes, whether you're from the nostalgic nineties or the awkward odds or you're giving Gen Z. We're glad that you're here. I'm Gabriela. And I'm Natalie. And this is the podcast where we rave and sometimes roast classic Disney Channel original movies. You're listening to Once Upon a Decom.
Season Two Premiere: Frenemies
00:00:38
Speaker
Hey, everybody. Welcome back to season two of Once Upon a Decom, the podcast where Natalie and I take you down memory lane, rewatching all of our old favorite Disney Channel original movies and some new ones, everyone. I say we did not watch one of those this week. No, not a favorite. Oh, goodness. I'm quitting the podcast. It was so bad. I can't wait to talk about it. Oh, you guys.
00:01:08
Speaker
So if you're new here, let me fill you in. We watch a Disney Channel original movie every week and we talk about our thoughts. We share where the actors are now, what the critics thought, and then we pick another movie for the next week. And you are in for a treat today because we watched the 2012 movie, Frenemies. This movie stars Zendaya, Bella Thorne, Mary Mouser, Muser, not really sure, and Nick Robinson.
00:01:36
Speaker
Which you would think would make it good that it has Zendaya, but oh was I wrong. Oh we were so hopeful in the last episode. I want to have an interview just from Zendaya on her thoughts on this movie because I didn't find that but I need to know. She probably blacked out and doesn't remember doing this because it is not her best work.
00:01:56
Speaker
The tagline is threefold, like the film. The taglines are geek versus chic, beauty versus beast and downtown versus uptown. What? Yeah. Second one doesn't even make sense. Apparently they're out of order of the movie. Beauty versus beast is like the first story with the dog and the dog. Oh, with the dog. Okay. I'm following. Yeah. Yeah.
00:02:23
Speaker
Wow, this movie is garbage.
00:02:28
Speaker
I was thinking about our, um, during our break in between seasons, we did the ranking them into tears. Uh-huh. I already know what this is. I could already hear your voice like, let me tell you all the reasons this movie's a dumpster fire. Yeah. Yep. Look forward to the break in between season two and season three when we're doing that again, because I,
00:02:49
Speaker
Know with absolute certainty where this movie will be listed. Uh-huh. Yeah. I also want to mention though, this podcast is probably going to be like a riot because the worst movies make the best episodes of this podcast. Oh, a hundred percent. this I was looking forward to talking to you about this because of that reason. It's going to be so funny and enjoyable to just trash it. Like, because we say we rave and sometimes roast D coms. This is a roasting time. This is a roast. Welcome to the roast, everyone.
00:03:24
Speaker
yep So, ah without further ado, Natalie, how about you share with us exactly what happened in
Storyline Overview: Frenemies
00:03:29
Speaker
this film? So, this movie is actually three interconnected mini-movies, short films, about different groups of friends as they struggle with, I don't know, friendship, I guess. Stick with me, I will make this so brief.
00:03:45
Speaker
Story one, Jake and Murray. Jake is a brainiac high schooler whose best friend is his dog Murray, and somehow that isn't a weird thing and everyone just completely accepts that. At school, everyone wants to pair with Jake for a science project because he's so smart, but hot girl Julianne dupes him into partnering with her because she bats her eyelashes or something, I don't know.
00:04:08
Speaker
Over time, Juliane manipulates Jake into prioritizing their project over his dog, which she does absolutely none of the work for, by the way. um Feeling neglected, Murray… Murray is the dog. He runs away. He gets rescued by tomboy Savannah. Savannah and Murray eventually reveal the truth to Jake, that Juliane is a horrible, manipulative human being, and Jake goes back to being best friends with his dog. That's… yep.
00:04:36
Speaker
Story 2, Avalon and Halle. These girls are best friends who run a fashion blog together. The blog catches the attention of a major fashion magazine who offers to like buy it from them, but only if one of them takes the editor role.
00:04:52
Speaker
even though they're 14 years old, it's fine. um The boss lady refuses to hire both of them for reasons. um And then they compete for the position. They sabotage each other. They get increasingly heated in arguments until they end up realizing that their friendship is more important than this potential job because they're 14. And they choose to turn down the offer altogether and continue to work on the blog themselves. And a news outlet picks up their story and their blog goes viral. And finally,
00:05:21
Speaker
Story three, Savannah and Emma. If you didn't think they could get weirder, somehow this one's the worst one. It got worse and worse and worse. I mean, I guess the middle one perhaps was the best. No, I think the dog one was the best and that's saying something because it anyway. Okay. Okay. We'll get there. We'll get there. So this Savannah is the same one from the first story with Jake and the dog.
00:05:45
Speaker
Savannah, the tomboy, and Emma, the rich British girly girl, are identical strangers who meet by chance at the mall. Not actually twins though. Yeah, not twins. Just identical strangers. Yep.
00:05:58
Speaker
Sure. um Emma comes from a luxurious but demanding life, and Savannah lives in a chaotic household, and she isn't exactly popular, and they decide that they're going to switch lives for a week. They struggle with each other's lives, obviously. Ultimately, they decide that they like their own lives better. This is shocking, I know.
00:06:19
Speaker
And Savannah gets together with Jake, and then there's a dance sequence, even though none of this was a musical before. And that's the movie. I hate the dance sequence. Why did they include the dance sequence? And then the skateboards, there was so much happening. I literally put, why did they need a dance number with break dancing skaters? I hate it. I don't know. Yeah. So that's the whole movie. These random people, they're friends, and then they're frenemies, and then they're
Critique of Frenemies' Structure and Acting
00:06:47
Speaker
Yeah, that's the movie, if you can even call it that. It's so bad. It's so bad. You all need to watch it so that you can know how bad it is. The best part is that your entire overview of the movie was like under five minutes.
00:07:05
Speaker
I mean, you can go back and see how long it was, but I'm sure that it was nothing. Here's what I said to my husband, Nick, about it. I feel like you and I, we always joke about these D-coms and their crazy plots and how we're like, this entire story could have been told in 20 minutes. But we don't mean it. like When you actually tell the entire D-com in 20 minutes, it's so fast paced that like nothing makes sense. There's no payoff. There's no like emotional arc or growth at all. And that's what this felt like. It felt like three separate ideas they had for DCOMS and they were like, we only have the budget for one, pick one. And they were like, we pick all three.
00:07:42
Speaker
But they could have, this is in my notes too, like they could have made this into one story. like Any of these could have been one story, and it still probably wouldn't have been great, but it would have been better than three disjointed, pretending to be connected stories that didn't fit together.
00:08:00
Speaker
That's exactly correct because it's not like it's one big movie that has different focus points throughout. it is li There is a literal narrator who's like, I'm going to tell you a story. Here's one. Okay, on to the next story. yeah There is no connection other than that. Some of the characters overlap, but the plot lines don't overlap at all.
00:08:22
Speaker
And I hate the narrator, and like you're right. If they had just gotten rid of the narrator and maybe like woven the stories together, perhaps like happening at the same time and just like shifting the focus of who we're looking at when, it could have been something. Or even if they were just like just the dog story, or just the Zendaya and Bella story, either of those could have made a whole DCOM if they fleshed it out more. Right. And here's the thing. Strangely enough, I don't think any of the acting was bad.
00:08:50
Speaker
It was just a pointless movie like yeah the writing was painful but it was like well produced like you know it was like the things that were wrong were creative choices it was not lack of budget it was not bad actors freaking zendaya isn't it it's not a bad actor.
00:09:09
Speaker
It had so much potential. I'd say the kid Jake with the dog was maybe the worst actor for me. He was just a tad cringy, but even that- He was still cute. Yeah, he did fine. There were even moments that I was like, oh, I see where they're going with it. Then it was like, no, no, I don't. They ruined it. No, I don't. Yep. It just kept going.
00:09:32
Speaker
I thought it was over twice. I just kept going. It's like this is an hour and a half movie, like hour 20 minute movie. Why did it feel like seven hours? It felt like Wicked was shorter than this. I agree 100%.
Public Opinions and Reviews
00:09:49
Speaker
I don't even have words it frustrated me so much and I wasn't feeling well when I watched it um and so I was just like this is making me more nauseous. Yeah, I took breaks. I took breaks during this movie.
00:10:03
Speaker
Yeah, I kind of sensed when the dog one was coming to an end, I was like, okay, they said at the beginning, we're going to tell you a story about us, but first let's talk about this kid from school. So I was like, okay, it feels like we're wrapping up the dog thing. Maybe now we'll get into the real story with Zendaya and Bella. And then we got to the end of their story and I was like, the end.
00:10:25
Speaker
And the whole third act was still, not even act, third separate plot was there. And I was like, no, I thought we'd made it. My favorite thing in the world. I texted you while I was watching this and I said, I'm five minutes in. What is this? Where is Zendaya and why is there a dog?
00:10:50
Speaker
Our whole text thread was hilarious. Yes, I will be posting our text thread on our social media. Go look at that, everyone, because it is very entertaining. Oh, and why? OK, well, the third one's the worst. So why did they do anything they did in the third plot? But why did they make one of them British? Her accent was so bad. Because they had to, obviously. It was so terrible. That's how else can you tell them apart, Gabby? They have to have different accents. Haven't you seen all the other twin movies? It wasn't? Like, I don't know.
00:11:20
Speaker
ah Discount parent trap. It was worse than discount parent trap. It was community theater during summer school parent trap. And I say that as a lover of community theater. If the parent trap is a Michelin star restaurant, this third act of frenemies is like Burger King. That's the comparison. um What you just said there brings me to another point. and Okay. This movie,
00:11:49
Speaker
is called frenemies. None of them were frenemies. Not at all. I literally looked up the definition because I was like, maybe I'm in the wrong. Maybe I'm wrong about what that means. No, no. The definition of frenemy A person who is or pretends to be a friend, but who is also in some way a rival. This this so what it doesn't... No. It kind of sort of applies to Zendaya and Bella because they're like competing for a job. But why is the guy and the dog? They're not frenemies. And the British... They're not.
00:12:34
Speaker
Everyone goes from actual best friends to actual enemies to actual best friends again. and The dog was just protecting him the whole time. That's stupid. I hated that Zendaya and Bella's characters, whose names I keep forgetting, I'm just calling them Zendaya and Bella. That's fine. Everyone knows what you mean. Yeah. They turned on each other so fast.
00:12:55
Speaker
They went from, we're going to figure it out. We will never be separated. And in one sentence at lunch, we're like, you're never taking this from me. I'm taking you down. I was like, what is going on? And that's what I mean about the fast pacing. like It wasn't fleshed out enough. No time to develop anything. And then the last one, they were just strangers. like Never friends, never enemies, it's just strangers. What? What? What?
00:13:17
Speaker
I think they just saw the word trending on Twitter or whatever it was back in 2012 and was like, that'd be a fun concept for a movie. Let's name it that and do nothing to do with frenemies. That must have been what happened. I think looking back on it, you're right. The dog one was actually the best. That one should have been a much longer and bigger movie. But here's my main problem with the dog one. Why did the girlfriend Fake girlfriend cares so much about this dog makes it makes sense and she is putting in more work to maintain these three fake Boyfriends and go to their houses every night instead of out with her friends her friends are like why aren't we shopping? And she's like cuz I'm pretending to date this guy, but she's doing that with three guys She is doing way more work to get them to do her work than if she just did the work for school. Yeah
00:14:12
Speaker
It makes no sense. Gabby, I can't even continue to discuss this movie. I think we just should move on because there's better things to talk about than this movie. Zero discussion points. Oh, please. Please. Let's go to the public opinion. I do. i have to Let's end on a positive note. I have one positive from this movie. Sure. Singular.
00:14:33
Speaker
The operatic yawn got me. I laughed really hard at that. I also thought that was very funny, but you know what I thought the best part of the movie was? The bloopers with the dog at the end during the credits.
00:14:47
Speaker
Yes, I feel like they took that from maybe it was like the Beethoven movies or the Air Bud movies. I've seen that done before. and That was the only enjoyable part and the operatic yawn. If you don't know what we're talking about, it was like a guy who looked like he was singing opera and it turns out he's yawning really hard and when he moves the opera singers behind him, it just you had to see it, but don't actually you don't have to see this movie. I did audibly laugh. That was a good little little gimmick.
00:15:14
Speaker
Yeah, that was the only positive I have about this film. Natalie, I had to restrain myself from looking up the public opinion yesterday. So please tell me what they say. Oh, gladly. So tomato meter on Rotten Tomatoes is the critic reviews. There is not a tomato meter for this, which is not shocking. Why would any critic watch this movie? No, no one would. There's one critic review and she says,
00:15:42
Speaker
The movie's worthwhile messages about social priorities and individuality come courtesy of sanitized characters and an unrealistic plot. Ultimately, kids won't miss out on the story's unmistakable positive messages about friendship. So there's some value to tuning in. I think she's wrong. There's no value. Yeah, I think I lost brain cells watching this. I agree. Okay, next, what did the people think? So this audience rating?
00:16:11
Speaker
is bonkers. I think it's just because no one has seen this movie. 42%, which is way higher than it deserves. Way higher. But that might be the lowest that we've seen. I can't remember right now, but that's pretty low. I feel like we've had lower, which is shocking information. This should be in the 20s. Come on. It should be in the 20s. I just feel like you you raised my expectations. I was like, oh no, it's going to be in like the 80s or 90s. It's still way higher than it deserves.
00:16:46
Speaker
But for some reason, a lot of audience members said good things for some reason. So I'm going to read a few for you today. This movie is packed with humor, heart, and deep conflict. It shows an intricate view of friendship in a variety of ways and the tension that propels the story further. What movie were they watching?
00:17:11
Speaker
ah This next person said I quite enjoyed this movie even though it was very cliche. It very much fits the channel It was aired on I think that's an insult to Disney Channel personally you you took the words right out of my mouth I was gonna say that's insulting. Yeah, Disney Channel original movies as a brand How dare you compare this to high school musical and descendants and all the other good ones? Mm-hmm any home then we got a two negative ones. Not even, we have one that's semi-negative and one that's negative. Are you ready? Are you ready? Yeah. So this one guy said, three short films edited to make one long movie that is completely incoherent and completely dumb. Thank you. Thank you. And then I feel validated because somebody wrote this comment. The people who made this movie did not know the definition of a frenemy.
00:18:06
Speaker
I was like, yes, thank you. Excellent. I thought that too. I'm not crazy. You're right. You're 100% right, especially going by the actual definition. It is bananas. So, before we move on, I just have to ask you, what's worse, this or you wish? This. Really?
00:18:25
Speaker
Yeah. Wow. I actually would say you wish is worse. At least you wish has a story that follows a line. Like you can follow the plot. This is no plot, just vibes and aren't good. I had some moments where I was like, so I didn't have that with you wish.
00:18:48
Speaker
i i can't I cannot stand behind this film. I would rather watch you wish on repeat for 24 hours than ever have to watch this movie again. That's truly saying something. I think You Wish just had such a negative vibe to it. That's true. At least this one, while terrible, had positive vibes. like They tried to make it funny. They failed. They tried to make it about friendship. They failed. so In that sense, I'm like, I walked away from this with like a lighter spirit, whereas You Wish, we've compared to It's a Wonderful Life in reverse. It's like it's a miserable life and it just keeps getting worse.
00:19:24
Speaker
So I have no lighter spirit after watching this my spirit is heavy. I feel sad Okay Well, that's fair. We can move on. I need to go watch High School Musical. Save me Zac Efron.
Cast Careers Post-Frenemies
00:19:37
Speaker
All right, let's go to the most interesting part of this podcast. Where are they now? Yeah, so I just went with the four main characters because there was just too much and too many people. So I went with Nick Robinson, who played Jake, Mary Mauser, who played Savannah and Emma, and then Zendaya and Bella Thorne, who are Avalon and what's her name? Hilary Haley. Halley?
00:19:59
Speaker
Yeah, that one. Anyways, we're going to start from like least interesting and move our way up to, let's be real, Zendaya. She's the most interesting. All right, let's do it. So Nick Robinson, who played Jake, the best friend of the dog, he started his career in theater. He played in a Seattle production of A Christmas Carol when he was a kid, and then he has continued acting since frenemies. He's known for The Kings of Summer.
00:20:24
Speaker
And he was in Jurassic World. He played one of the older brothers, and that's when he kind of got like ah some fame going on. Yeah, that is the same guy. Yeah, it is. Yeah. ah What he's really known for, though, is starring as Simon Spire in the groundbreaking romantic comedy drama called Love, Simon. It was the first major studio film centered on a gay teens coming out story.
00:20:51
Speaker
So that's his biggest role? Yes. I did know he was in that. Okay. And then he has continued acting in TV and film. He's gone back to the stage some and he's done some voice work, but nothing, nothing super notable. So that's sick. I mean, Love Simon's really big. Yeah. Well, I'm saying other than the ones I already mentioned. Okay. All right.
00:21:11
Speaker
He's a cutie. I mean, good for him. Yeah, good for him. He's done all right. Moving on to Mary Mouser, Muser. Forget her name. She played Savannah and Emma. Mary started working from a very young age. She has a ton of credits to her name before frenemies. Her breakout role was Lacey Fleming in Body of Proof in 2011.
00:21:33
Speaker
but she gained widespread fame for her role as Samantha LaRusso, the daughter of Daniel LaRusso in the Netflix series Cobra Kai. So that is what she is most known for. My husband loves that show. I could not get into it myself, but my mom and sister love it.
00:21:53
Speaker
I've never even tried, but I've heard it's great. I love the Karate Kid. It's fine. She is also known for her role in Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, which I believe Nick was also in. Oh, cute. I forgot to mention that before, yeah. But ah she was pretty notable in that. She's known as an influencer on both TikTok and YouTube, where she's really open about her journey having type 1 diabetes, and she advocates for awareness and support of those living with the condition.
00:22:23
Speaker
That's really cool. Yeah. And then most recently in 2024, she voiced the character Cleo in the full cast original rom-com audio book, Know Your Newlywed alongside teen Wolf star Tyler Posey. Oh, I love Tyler Posey. Me too. So they were like co-stars in this audio book together. That's fun. Yeah. So she's doing well.
00:22:48
Speaker
Okay, are you ready for Bella Thorne? Because it it's going to get beefy here. Yeah, I am honestly not. I just, I don't know anything other than she's been in a lot of drama. Oh, prepare yourself. I am not going to go into a ton of the controversy in drama, but just know that she is known as a controversial figure. Yeah, that's literally all I know. She has an extremely expansive career, many creative outlets, lots of things that she's doped in. I'm only going to touch on a selection.
00:23:18
Speaker
Okay, so she rose to fame as C.C. Jones on Disney Channel, Shake It Up. She had done some stuff before, but that's where she really got famous alongside Zendaya. That ran from 2010 to 2013. Then she took on more mature roles post Disney and she has a long list of projects that she has worked on. Some of them are music videos, some of them are TV and film. Most notably, she was in The Duff. She starred alongside Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in Blended, and she was in Midnight Sun.
00:23:50
Speaker
Those are like her big roles on film. She's also continued a musical career, releasing multiple singles and EPs in the pop and electronic music genres. And like I said, she's done like a thousand music videos for those. She competed as Swan in the third season of The Masked Singer. Oh, I didn't know that. feel Yeah, I think she was revealed very early on because one of the judges recognized her from something they had worked on together. You want to know what's funny? So many of these DCOM actors have ended up on either The Masked Singer or Dancing with the Stars. Have you noticed this? Oh, I have noticed that and we're going to bring up Dancing with the Stars in just a bit. Of course, of course.
00:24:31
Speaker
Yeah. um Bella is also a published author in 2014. What? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Get ready. In 2014, she wrote Autumn Falls, the first in a series of three young adult novels, the other two being Autumn's Kiss and Autumn's Wish. And it's about a teenage girl who navigates adolescence with help from her diary, which may have links to the supernatural. Okay. I am going to keep my thoughts to myself there.
00:25:00
Speaker
Okay? I want to know them off air, please. And then in July 2019, Rare Bird Books published The Life of the Wannabe Mogul, Mental Disarray, Volume 1, which was a book of her autobiographical poetry. Oh. Uh-huh. She also, just prepare yourself. It just gets crazy and crazy. We have two more things. Oh my gosh, okay.
00:25:27
Speaker
She also has a brand called Thorn Dynasty that sells jewelry and smoking accessories. You can find the link on her Instagram. Oh, okay. And I don't want to go into details on this because it frustrates me, but she made her directorial debut ah directing adult film work. And there was some controversy with OnlyFans. I don't want to dive into it because it's just not relevant to our channel, but ah wow wow A wide, diverse career. Many creative outlets. ahha I think that she might be the perfect example of a child star who went a little too far in the other direction, maybe. I can agree with that. yeah and I'm not trying to be mean about who she is as a person. I don't know her. It just seems like her life went in all kinds of directions. and
00:26:25
Speaker
It's kind of hard to follow like her persona, I guess. Her brand is kind of all over the place. Yeah. Well, let's move on to Zendaya. I have lots of nice things to say about Zendaya. Me too. I love her. Me too. Okay. Let's talk about her now.
00:26:40
Speaker
All right, Zendaya had already done several Disney projects by the time we got to this movie. Most notably, she was on Shake It Up, which was going on during the filming of this, which is probably why they added that ridiculous dance number because her and Bella Thorne were on it together. And then we will see her again in the future in Zapped, which we've talked about before. I'm so excited. Because it has that the boy in it. The boy fight from Radio Rebel.
00:27:07
Speaker
Yeah, it's going to be so good. It freaking better be because Zendaya, you have disappointed me with this film. Yes, yes, she has, but i dont I don't think it was her fault. I think she did a good job with the material she was given. Anyway, she achieved worldwide fame through her role as MJ in the MCU Spider-Man series, and she's appeared in all three of those films. She's also known for The Greatest Showman, the TV show Euphoria, the Dune movies, and much much more. Her list is even longer than Bella Thorne's.
00:27:41
Speaker
Oh yeah, as it should be. As it should be. She also has a thriving musical career. She first showcased her musical talent on the Disney Channel, but she started a solo career in 2013 with her self-titled debut album Zendaya. But then her music kind of slowed down as she chose to focus more on acting, but she has contributed to the Euphoria soundtrack and her voice and dancing were on huge display in The Greatest Showman Notably, her song with Zac Efron rewrite the stars, which I love so much.
00:28:15
Speaker
ah zachary zachary ephron in that movie i just I just, I love him so much. That movie is like a Disney adult's dream. Exactly. You know, you know. Zendaya was also on season 16 of Dancing with the Stars, which we've talked about before. She was only 16 years old and at the time that was the youngest a star had ever been on the show. That record was broken by, I forget her name, Willow. Oh, Willow Shields. We share our last name. Willow Shields. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:28:49
Speaker
She was 14 on the show. We joke we're cousins because she's also from New Mexico and her last name is Shields. so Okay, so Willow Shields, she broke the record because she was 14. But anyways, Zendaya, when she was on, she was 16, she was paired with Val and they came in second because of course she did. She's a fantastic dancer. Yeah, why? I will leave my soapbox in the past, but you shouldn't have dancers on a show where the point is that they're not supposed to be dancers. Yes.
00:29:18
Speaker
Natalie will die on this hill. She's brought it up in every episode. We've talked about dancing with the star I will die on that hill. It's It's fine. It's fine. It's It's fine. fine Anyways, so Zendaya also has her hand in the fashion world. Oh, yeah. I mean, first and foremost, she's just a fashion icon. She's been on Vogue and every other important fashion magazine and everybody wants to be her. So there's that. But she uses her platform to advocate for diversity and representation in fashion, and she emphasizes inclusivity in her projects and promoting the work of emerging black designers.
00:29:52
Speaker
ah She also has her own clothing line that launched in 2016 called Deja by Zendaya, which offers gender neutral and size inclusive styles. We love her. She's amazing. And here's my favorite part. I literally know what you're going to say.
00:30:08
Speaker
Of course you do. We all know where I'm going with this. In her personal life, Zendaya has been dating Spider-Man co-star Tom Holland for years. They are the most adorable Hollywood couple on Earth, and they are very private about their relationship and personal lives. It wasn't even confirmed that they were dating until like years after, I think, ah but we all knew. And just in the last month, Zendaya rocked a sparkling new diamond ring on her left ring finger at the Golden Globes, which sparked rumors about their engagement. And as of this recording, I think it's official because Tom's dad wrote a blog post about the engagement and there's been like tons of sources. It's so freaking cute. And apparently he proposed like in their house, like on the couch, like how regular. I love it.
