Introduction and Format Change

00:00:22
Leo Ernewein
Welcome to Lando's Takes here on the Leo and Lando Show. i am Landon Lando-Samanok. Welcome everybody. So you're probably wondering why you're hearing my voice and not Leo's. I am flying solo for this one. So we're going to try a little something different on this episode or this take anyways that we're going to try. We're going to, like I said, we're going to try something different and see how this goes. And maybe once in a while, I might be able to do a little bit of my own take in and fly solo for a little bit.

Time Limitations in Guest Episodes

00:00:55
Leo Ernewein
And the other thing is, is, you know, we have lots to talk about in one hour between Leo and I. And whenever we have a guest that we don't always get to everything that we need to talk about because there's so much to talk about. And we, we not necessarily go off the rails, but we do tend to talk about other things along with the the topic. So, um I want just want to say to to everybody, welcome. And I hope you enjoy what I have to say. um This isn't going to be a very, very long take or episode if you want to talk, if you want to call it that.
00:01:27
Leo Ernewein
um It's probably going to be maybe 30 minutes or or less, depending on how fast I read through what I'm going to have to say and talk about. um So I hope you all enjoy.

Canada's World Cup Milestone

00:01:37
Leo Ernewein
um So today today I'm going to be talking about what happened the last few days what's come out in the NHL and the NBA next week or our next episode, Leo and I are going to dive into more about the world cup because it's just about to start real quickly. If anybody hasn't or hasn't, or doesn't know that Canada and against Bosnia happened today, which was Friday, June 12th. And they had a draw of one, one. So Canada gets their first ever point in the world cup of soccer
00:02:11
Leo Ernewein
ever i believe so if i'm wrong about that i apologize but as far as i know it's ever so if anybody was wanting to know what the score what happened with canada today one one draw between canada and bosnia so congratulations to the men i know probably a win a win would have been better but that's just how it goes sometimes a win is a win So anyways, like I said, we're going to talk about the NHL and the NBA. though That happened the last few days.
00:02:38
Leo Ernewein
Give you a little bit of my take and we'll go from

Carolina Hurricanes in Stanley Cup Final

00:02:41
Leo Ernewein
there. um So let's start with ah what happened in the Stanley Cup Final a two nights ago. um Carolina seems to be taking over the series like they did again against Ottawa, Philadelphia and Montreal.
00:02:57
Leo Ernewein
In your face, relentless on the pucks, skating hard, getting to the net and all that stuff, wearing down the opponent. Vegas also took some very stupid penalties in Game 4 or Game 5, sorry, I apologize. It was Game 5 that caused the game... and that cost them the game at the wrong time. And it hurt them massively in the long run with momentum and everything else that they were trying to accomplish in that game. Mark Stone had a four-minute high-sticking penalty. Jack Eichel had a tripping penalty. And Brandon McNabb had a cross-checking penalty on Jackson Blake of the Carolina Hurricanes.
00:03:39
Leo Ernewein
All killers, complete killers, And you can't take penalties like that whatsoever when you're trying to take a lead in a series or trying to get gain momentum. Because I'll be honest with you, Vegas did not play very good that night. And when you're trying to get your traction, taking penalties like that against a team like Carolina, you just cannot do.
00:04:00
Leo Ernewein
So now I'm going to move on to Carter Hart.

Carter Hart's Struggles

00:04:03
Leo Ernewein
He's now getting out-goaled by Brandon Busse. take Take note of this here, guys. Carter Hart has let in at least four goals per game in the last five games that the Stanley Cup Final has gone on.
00:04:22
Leo Ernewein
um And I believe when you watch him, it seems like the whole stage has now caught up to him and it's showing. The goals he let in weren't all his fault. Vegas is playing way too soft in front of him. And like Tort said, people like Stahl...
00:04:39
Leo Ernewein
is killing him in front of the net. But two of the goals that were was ah the the two of the goals that he let in ah was ah was a complete misread by him and positioning thing in which I believe is why he's getting out-goaled.
00:04:59
Leo Ernewein
Boasi has come in and completely turned the series around. And good on Brendamore for making a hard decision by sitting out Anderson because Bussey looks fresher.
00:05:10
Leo Ernewein
He looks determined and he is playing well. And he's only only let in at least two goals a game and and is making huge saves when he needs to.
00:05:22
Leo Ernewein
Personally, Vegas needs to make goalie change themselves and go with Hill to change the momentum because if they don't, the Stanley Cup... in my opinion, will be presented Sunday in their barn because Carter Hart, I think, is mentally tired and his confidence and confidence is lacking. And that's ah not a good thing when you see a goaltender having lack of confidence, especially at this time at this time of the year.
00:05:52
Leo Ernewein
So I want to elaborate on that. When you when you look at what caught her heart, you know, every goal they he lets in, I mean, any goalie who lets a goal in is always going to look down on themselves. But all you have to do is watch his eyes. He just he just looks befuggled, if you want to call it that. He doesn't know where he's not tracking the puck well, and it's going by him. And, you know, and and again, like I said, the defense has to play way, way, way, way better in front of him.
00:06:21
Leo Ernewein
and they're giving the puck away a lot in front of them. And so they got to play better in front of them. Or if the car hard is going be in the net, he has to play better.
00:06:33
Leo Ernewein
He has to put play better. He has to get, um he has to start outgoing Brandon Bussey. So is it ah it's a tall task, but I believe possibly, possibly,
00:06:45
Leo Ernewein
Carter Hart can do it. But you know what, the it folks? think I think the magic of the Vegas Golden Knights is starting to run out. And so here's my last point on this series that I'm going talk about coaching and why I think that the magic is starting

Coaching Success: Brindamore vs. Tortorella

00:07:03
Leo Ernewein
to run out. So I i believe Rod Brindamore is out coaching John Tortorella.
00:07:10
Leo Ernewein
Rod is getting more out of his players and it's showing. And I go back to you know the giveaways and the and that sort of stuff. um It starts from stall and it filters all the way down.
00:07:23
Leo Ernewein
what's scarry for What's scary for Vegas is that the best players from Carolina... are starting to get going. So I'm talking about Sebastian Ajo, Andres, uh, Sebastian, the cough.
00:07:36
Leo Ernewein
Um, I'm also talking about, uh, you know, Martinuk, uh, and also, um, number 24. I've lost his name now.
00:07:48
Leo Ernewein
Anyways, you guys, you guys know who you're, I'm talking about. ah and so they've, that they've play They're starting to completely outplay the top guys of the Vegas Golden Knights.
00:08:02
Leo Ernewein
um One of the other problems that I feel that is happening in this series, too, is that Vegas' third and fourth lines aren't scoring either, and that's a huge problem.
00:08:15
Leo Ernewein
But one of one thing I will say is the fact that this has been one of the most exciting series I have watched in a long time. And I know I mentioned this on our last pod, that it is too bad that this series isn't going to be well watched in Canada because my goodness, every everyone,
00:08:33
Leo Ernewein
This has been one of the best Stanley Cup finals I think I've ever watched. And the reason for that is there hasn't been really total dominance on one team and the other team is playing catch-up. It's been pretty much... It's been pretty even in up and up until about Game 5.
00:08:49
Leo Ernewein
And I think a lot of you will probably agree with that. That... Yeah, or whoever's watching, should say. That, you know, it it's been pretty even for the most part until up and up until about Game 5. Um...
00:09:01
Leo Ernewein
um So, but one of the one of the things that I will say is the fact that it, ah no, I've already said that.
00:09:13
Leo Ernewein
um Yeah, so again, Leo and will talk more in depth about this next on our next pod.
00:09:23
Leo Ernewein
And just remember, folks, that anything can happen on anything can happen on Sunday. Will we see a game seven for Wednesday? We'll see. a i think i think I kind of somewhat share towards his confidence that there they will be back in Raleigh. But based on what I saw in game five, I don't know.
00:09:45
Leo Ernewein
So this is a big, big game six coming up on Sunday. um and And also remember, folks, as we end the coaching debate and John Tortorello will not be back for for the Vegas Golden Knights.
00:10:01
Leo Ernewein
He's made it perfectly clear to the Golden Knights that this is only a short-term tenure. So whatever happens on Sunday, ah whether they move on but and go to Raleigh or not, that John Tortorello will not be coaching the Vegas Golden Knights next season.
00:10:18
Leo Ernewein
So this was just a short tenure to try to push them over the hump. And, you know, and honestly, guys, i think they've almost done it. But I just, I think, think the Vegas Golden Knights after having many tough series against Utah, Anaheim, and then, you know, it was a short-lived series against Colorado. But they still had to play, they still had to play well against Colorado. that I think the the long the the long road of the Vegas Golden Knights is starting to show. And I think the short series of the Carolina Hurricanes that they've had is starting to show too.
00:10:56
Leo Ernewein
ah the Carolina hurricanes are are a lot lot more fresher. They look more. Yeah. They look a lot more fresher, energetic.
00:11:10
Leo Ernewein
And the guy that I remember who I was going to say, number 24 is Seth Jarvis. So there you go.

Darnell Nurse's Trade Request

00:11:15
Leo Ernewein
I remembered who the guy is. Sometimes what happens in my brain is I think, I think,
00:11:21
Leo Ernewein
I'm going to think of what I'm going to say, and then all of a sudden I black out, it's like, okay, who is this player? So, yeah, it's Seth Jarvis who I was talking about. So, as we move on, um couple things before I wrap up hockey.
00:11:34
Leo Ernewein
I want to quickly talk about Darnell Nurse and Cale McCarr. If many of you heard that Darnell Nurse has asked for a trade out of Edmonton, Which, you know honestly, I personally don't blame Darnell for getting out of that circus in Edmonton anyways. But I think there's a lot of reasons why, i feel that there's a lot of reasons why he's wanting to leave. And I'll get into it right now.
00:12:00
Leo Ernewein
um I wasn't surprised, like I said, that Darnell Nurse um want wants to trade out of Edmonton. And honestly, I'm glad he wants to because he's, in my opinion, he's been a huge liability for the last number of years, not just a few years, the number of years.
00:12:16
Leo Ernewein
The amount of money they signed him was ah an eight-year, $74 million dollars contract extension that kicked in in 2023. So he's been he's been three years into his new contract.
00:12:31
Leo Ernewein
which carries an average value $9.25 million, on which is a cap hit, basically. So and an average salary of $9.25, that's his cap And the contract that he signed three years ago will run through 20-29-30 NHL season. And it also features a full no-movement clause. So basically, for those who don't know, anybody who signs a contract with a full no-movement clause has... ah
00:13:04
Leo Ernewein
has full control of whether they want to be traded or not, or they want to be traded to the destination or not. So need to make sure that everybody knows that who doesn't know that that's, that's what no movement causes. So, um, like I said, I get it a few years ago and maybe it's been more than a few years ago.
00:13:28
Leo Ernewein
i get that when you look back and you you look at what defensemen have come out over the last, um, you know, number of a a number of years, that as Darnell Nurse be was a young defenseman at the time, he, i get that Emerton's like, hey, we got to lock this guy up. He's our future defenseman. He's going to carry a defensive core.
00:13:51
Leo Ernewein
ah He's going take it over the power play. He's going to play big minutes. And here comes, and evan but a young Evan Bouchard, who's taking over those reigns, Now, he's another story. i think he's another liability of of of problem in Edmonton, but that will be another day or another story. But I also want to say to Evan Bouchard, I wish him all the best with his recovery because he took a nasty, nasty blow to the head and the Canada-USA game on young on Ryan Lindgren, who plays for the Seattle Kraken. So I wish Evan Bouchard a speedy, speedy recovery on that part. so
00:14:32
Leo Ernewein
ah So back to Darnell Nurse, for someone who wants to take a stab at him or take a s snapt stab at him is what I'm trying to say.
00:14:44
Leo Ernewein
he might He might help at you take a stab at him. um will have to the Edmonton will have to realize he maybe have to go to a team that's retooling as well or has to realize that his contract is very steep. So he may not get to the destination that he wants to go to.
00:15:08
Leo Ernewein
So I'll be honest with you. I've watched Don Elner a number of years, of obviously being here in Alberta. I've watched him a number of games and he's just he's just such a defensive liability that his defensive game is just, it's it's really brutal. And in a lot of ways, I think for the amount of money that they're paying him, He's not worth the money. He's not worth the money that they're paying him anymore.
00:15:32
Leo Ernewein
And I honestly don't think he was worth the money that Edmonton should have paid him in the first place. And that's part of the reason why they're in such a big mess in the first place when it comes to cap crunch and why they had to let so many guys go over the last number of years is because of partly because of this contract that they signed him a few years ago.
00:15:53
Leo Ernewein
um So i would now now it's Cal McCarr's turn. So Kael McCarr rumors are going around Flames Nation that he wants to be a Flame or should be a Flame.

Kael McCarr's Future Speculations

00:16:04
Leo Ernewein
Although that would be cool for him.
00:16:07
Leo Ernewein
And I'm sure Calgary would like that. But he's not going anywhere. And here's why I say that. Calgary, by time they start to even come close to a playoff contender, he's going to be in his mid-30s.
00:16:21
Leo Ernewein
He's 28 right now, which is hard to believe. um So my point is Colorado right now has the best chance to win for a few more years compared to Calgary.
00:16:32
Leo Ernewein
I do agree with Joe Sackett. He'll retire as an avalanche. So meaning that i I do believe, and it's nice to hear that contract negotiations are going very, very well. And that I do expect that Kayla McCarr is going to sign another long-term deal with Colorado avalanche. So great news about that.
00:16:53
Leo Ernewein
um Also, Salkic talked about the group of players that has assembled. He talked about Jared Bendar and how the mix of everybody is ah is great. The players like playing for Jared Bendar, so he's not going to anywhere. The whole coaching stuff's not going anywhere.
00:17:11
Leo Ernewein
He also touched about Nathan McKinnon. um And there was rumors flying around, you know, on Twitter and everything that there are players that just could not stand being with Nathan McKinnon and wanted out of Colorado because everybody sees, you know, on the film, on, on not film, but on TV where he's yelling at players. And honestly, guys, he's a very, very fiery person. He wants the best out of his players.
00:17:38
Leo Ernewein
or play he wants the best out of his teammates is what I'm trying to say. He wants to win so badly that sometimes his frustration gets blurted out. And honestly, none of the players take it to heart. It's just Nathan McKinnon being a very competitive person, and they love that about him. And that's what make that's what great players do. They want the best out of their teammates. So I think this whole thing of Nathan McKinnon being a bully and everything and not being a strong leader in the dressing room and nobody liking Nathan McKinnon. I think it's hogwash.
00:18:12
Leo Ernewein
I think it's stupid. And for those people who think that Nathan McKinnon is doing all this stuff, i i really you need to really watch the games and watch out how he loves his love is his players. And you also should hear some of his his interviews too. He loves his teammates. The teammates love him, like I said. And he loves playing for Jared Bender. So i think I think what happens is is when losing happens and when frustration comes out, everybody, that that gets magnified. And that's what happened in the Vegas series, that there was so much frustration with Colorado, the Colorado Avalanche against the Vegas Golden Knights, that any time the camera was on Nathan McKinnon,
00:18:55
Leo Ernewein
everybody's like, oh my goodness, what is with Nathan and his poor teammates? It's just, that's just how Nathan is. and And honestly, he's not like that throughout the regular season. I just think the frustration got to Nathan McKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche. So,
00:19:09
Leo Ernewein
um We'll talk more about about this as we go along with the Colorado Avalanche as we go on throughout the summer. We got free agency and all of that sort of stuff. So um stay tuned. We got more. We'll talk more of hockey. There's lots going to be going on in the next little bit. So stay tuned. Leo and I will do our best to bring you up to information when we start up our podcast in the next coming weeks.
00:19:35
Leo Ernewein
um And then also before I get into the NBA and wrap up podcast, Lando's takes that we've got some um some guests coming on and I've already talked to them I just need now need to set up a time that works for them, works for Leo, and we'll bring them to you. So I'm going to leave this as a surprise.
00:19:54
Leo Ernewein
And I hope that when I do announce it that you'll tune in because there are two ah people that a lot of people will know in this area and are great athletes, great people, and and carry themselves very, very well. So stay tuned on that one. So, Let's talk about the NBA Finals that just happened, or the Game 4 that just happened in the NBA

New York Knicks' Comeback in NBA Finals

00:20:20
Leo Ernewein
Finals. So, in my opinion, the NBA Finals have been unbelievable.
00:20:25
Leo Ernewein
The basketball has been so exciting between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks. And like I said, especially in Game 4, that huge, huge comeback by the New York Knicks, down by 27 points at halftime.
00:20:40
Leo Ernewein
Uh... And they won by one point because OG Ananobi, a former Toronto Raptor, tips the ball in. Now, I'll be honest with you. I don't like any New York teams besides the and NHL's New York Islanders. But I hope the Knicks do win because a 50-year drought is crazy.
00:20:59
Leo Ernewein
And the reason why it's been a 50-year drought, think about how good, if you actually shouldn't say how, think about it Look on Wikipedia and Google um past champions in the Eastern Conference of the NBA.
00:21:21
Leo Ernewein
ah The Boston Celtics have been it been powerhouse when it comes to though within the last 50 years.
00:21:33
Leo Ernewein
They said that the Boston Celtics have been... been If not in the NBA finals or close to it, and they've just absolutely run away with the NBA in the Eastern Conference. So that's one of the reasons why the New York Knicks haven't been in it. And then also just poor decisions, poor management, poor coaching, you name it. The luck has not been on the New York new york Knicks' side, and it may all come to a crashing halt tomorrow, which will be Saturday, June 13th. We'll see if the New York Knicks...
00:22:04
Leo Ernewein
can get over the hump and win the NBA nba championship. So, um And like I said, 50-year drought is crazy. um New York City, it within the last 50 years, have not had a lot to cheer about. Yes, the Islanders in the 80s have won a number of championships, but I don't think a lot of people in Manhattan and the rest of the city, other than on Long Island, I'll be really too impressed with the New York Islanders winning four out of the five championships in the eighty s And then the Rangers did win one in 94, but that's been about it.
00:22:41
Leo Ernewein
The Knicks have been in the and NBA Finals in 94 and 99. They lost them both. So there has not been a lot to cheer about. And then also I should add on with the New York Rangers. They were in it in 2014 with Henrik Lundqvist. But again, they lost to the Los Angeles Kings.
00:23:01
Leo Ernewein
There has not been any champions to date on manha on Manhattan. now Now that I say that, I do remember now that yes, the New York Giants did win the Super Bowl twice against the New England Patriots, but we'll leave it at that. Everybody who knows me, I'm a huge, huge Patriots fan, and we'll leave it at that.
00:23:22
Leo Ernewein
The Giants beat New England twice, we we'll leave it at that. so so But all honesty, the last 50 years, that has not like I said, there hasn't been really, a other than a few you know hoorays, ah there hasn't there hasn't been a lot to cheer about within the last 50 years. so um Let's talk about San Antonio.

Challenges for Young Spurs Team

00:23:47
Leo Ernewein
San Antonio is a very, very young team, and I believe they are getting outcoached too. ah And because the coach is also very young. So the coach's name is Mitch Johnson. Johnson initially served as an inter interim head coach for the San Antonio Spurs for 77 games during season. Before his promotion, Johnson served as an assistant coach under Greg Popovich, who is now used to coach the San Antonio Spurs starting in 2019 and previously worked as an assistant for the Spurs G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs.
00:24:26
Leo Ernewein
So he's a very, very young coach, and I think the New York Knicks are going to win the and NBA Finals. Nobody has ever come back down that much, so be interesting If the Spurs have anything left in the tank.
00:24:40
Leo Ernewein
Wambi, their big center. He needs to be careful going into the game tomorrow night, June 13th. One more flagrant foul and he's going to be in big trouble and suspended.
00:24:54
Leo Ernewein
He did an unnecessary elbow on Towns in game four that gave him that flagrant foul. So he better be careful.
00:25:04
Leo Ernewein
Well, folks... That's about it. That's all I have to take about all my takes. Like I said, this was only going to be a half an hour-ish thing. um i want to say to everyone, thanks for listening.
00:25:24
Leo Ernewein
We'll be back. I think it'll be when Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday next week. We're going to talk more sports. Also, folks, please, please, Leave a ranking on either Spotify or Apple. The more people rate us and comment, the more popular our show will get.
00:25:42
Leo Ernewein
Also, one thing I want to say, and this is a shout-out to Leo. Leo and I have become much closer because of this. It's almost been a year since we started this, and we kick-started this.
00:25:55
Leo Ernewein
And so I want to make a big shout-out to him. And also I want to shout out to all of you who will listen to us. We appreciate you all and thanks for listening to our opinions.
00:26:05
Leo Ernewein
We thank you so much for listening to our show and take her easy.
