Episode Introduction and Context

00:00:19
Leo Ernewein
Welcome to the Leo Lando Show. Once again, this is Lando's Takes number two. Welcome everybody. I hope everybody's had a good Canada week. And also happy 4th of July to our American listeners, if we have any that is.
00:00:37
Leo Ernewein
um So this is part two of Lando's Takes. We've got a lot to talk about. um The reason why... ah We're doing ah another Lando's Takes is because there has been so much to talk about. And once again, Leo is busy this week. He's ah taking over for a whole bunch of his co-workers while they go stampeding. So happy stampeding, everybody. um So what I'm going to talk about today, we've got a lot to talk about um in the next half hour, 45 minutes.
00:01:06
Leo Ernewein
um And then now what's on the docket coming up next week in the next, actually over the summer, um we're going to actually have a couple of guests coming on. um ah to kind of get through the summer a little bit and talk a little different stuff than what we've been talking about. We've been talking a lot about hockey and football and basketball the last little bit and and soccer and things like that. So we want to get some guests on and and talk about their personal experiences. We've got, I'm not going to spoil the the guests who are going to be coming on, but
00:01:40
Leo Ernewein
Yeah, we're going to have some guests and we're going go from there. And so that's what's on the dock in the next couple weeks here. So just want to give you a little heads up what's coming up here.

Canada's World Cup Redemption

00:01:50
Leo Ernewein
So today is Friday, June or not June. It's July, isn't it? I'm so used to saying June, but it is Friday, July the third
00:02:01
Leo Ernewein
Uh, yeah, so NHL trade deadline just, or not NHL trade deadline, NHL free agency just passed. Uh, the CFL season has been underway and, uh, lots of world cup soccer have been happening. So I'm like to start off with Canada. They are in the, what I like to call the sweet 16, the final 16. They play Morocco tomorrow, July 4th in the United States and ah they take Like I said, they take on Morocco.
00:02:32
Leo Ernewein
Last time these two two countries met was four years ago in Qatar at the World Cup. Canada lost its qualifying game, or trying to get in at least. Morocco was in their division, and they lost 2-1. They missed the boat on to moving on into the elimination round. So a little bit of redemption for Canada.
00:02:54
Leo Ernewein
Canada to to try to beat Morocco once again. That is to going on to tomorrow. So ah if Canada moves on, they will go on to the Elite Eight and the quarter World Cup quarterfinal, and they will take on the winner of France or Paraguay. So where i my take on this game is the fact that I think Canada is a lot more better prepared. I think they've got a lot of experience, and they've been on a very big roll.
00:03:22
Leo Ernewein
Morocco has just squeaked in, basically. And they've i think I think Canada is way better than Morocco was it four years ago. Even though I did pick Morocco as kind of the dark horse team or the team to watch out for, i do think after watching Canada the last little bit here, I do think Canada... It's got a pretty good chance against Morocco. so But you have to play the game, and we'll see what happens tomorrow. So I'm not sure what time the game is at tomorrow. i think it's sometime in the middle of the afternoon. But check your local listings and look out or even go on social media, and they will tell you.

CFL Highlights: Stampeders and Elks

00:03:59
Leo Ernewein
So the next topic I'm going to talk about is the CFL. So we're going to start with the Calgary Stampeders because yeah as of yesterday, the Stampeders beat ah the Toronto Argonauts.
00:04:11
Leo Ernewein
And they beat them astounding Vernon Adams broke vernon adams j broke or tied, not broke, tied a record um for six passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown to score seven touchdowns for the Calgary Stampeders.
00:04:29
Leo Ernewein
And he tied the likes of Jeff Garcia, Doug Flutie, And his coach, Dave Dickinson, he tied all those guys for no record was broken, but he tied all those great Stampeder quarterback.
00:04:45
Leo Ernewein
um his or What I'm trying to say is they've passed... Or he's tied very the past very good quarterbacks of the Calgary Stampeders is what I'm trying to say.
00:04:58
Leo Ernewein
So, yeah, so good though huge congratulations to Vernon Adams on on ah on a great on a great game. That's probably one of his best games as a Stampeder that he's played in the last year and four games.
00:05:13
Leo Ernewein
i And then Calgary also beat BC last week and touchdown Kelowna as part one of that touchdown Kelowna where the BC Lions have been removed from BC place for the next little bit here while the World Cup of Soccer has been going on in Vancouver. And I will honestly say i was in Kelowna last weekend and I have to honestly say that I was so impressed with how the CFL, the city of Kelowna,
00:05:42
Leo Ernewein
And the BC Lions, what they put on a little tight space. And there was 20,000 people... i there And they made the event so memorable and so special that it'll be something that I don't think I'll ever forget.
00:05:58
Leo Ernewein
It was, you know, it was fun. The atmosphere was good. The game was exciting. The weather was decent. It wasn't like a typical Kelowna hot summer day um summer day. It was actually pleasant. And so a huge shout out to the CFL, the BC Lions and the city of Kelowna for making such a memorable experience I know that the Lions will host their final game against the Edmonton Elks our tomorrow in Kelowna as part two of the touchdown Kelowna.
00:06:31
Leo Ernewein
It'll be the final game in Kelowna. So hopefully... Hopefully the atmosphere in the game will be just as good as what I experienced last weekend because I'll honestly say I think Edmonton Elk fans are in for a real treat if they're able to make the trot make the trip to Kelowna and see the Elks play because, my goodness, I had a lot of fun. And the atmosphere is really, really good. So, ah yeah, hopefully you have tickets and are able to catch the game tomorrow on TV because it's something really, really cool that
00:07:02
Leo Ernewein
and Never really happens very often. so Speaking of the Edmonton Elks, this was a take that i that's near and dear to my heart. Or not really near and dear to my heart, but something that I think needs to be brought up. So there was an article that was on the Canadian Press, I believe it was. And it was also posted on sportsnet.ca.
00:07:27
Leo Ernewein
And little history of the Edmonton Elks. So for for those who don't know, the Edmonton Elks i had to change their name a couple years ago ah because of ah the pandemic.
00:07:43
Leo Ernewein
ah So basically what this article basically said is um Mr. Morris, who is the president of the Edmonton Elks, basically said in the in their poll and their preseason interview that they've got to get down to the ground running of trying to get back fans' trust and faith in the organization.
00:08:06
Leo Ernewein
And some of the steps that he said that they've taken is that they're going back to the double E logo that they used to have. ah They're trying to engage into the community. They're trying to make it more affordable.
00:08:20
Leo Ernewein
um And, they' you know, they're trying to do a whole bunch of steps that I think, you know, I kind of agree with that they've lost. But one of the things that really is on front and center and are two things that kind of coexist with each other.
00:08:35
Leo Ernewein
I admit the Edmonton Eskimos at the time got succumbed to the pressure of name changing because of the whole George Floyd thing that happened in Minnesota. And and I'm not taking away from what happened. I'm not going to get into the the whole logistics of it because we all experienced it five years ago.
00:08:56
Leo Ernewein
But the Edmonton Eskimos at the time succumbed, like I said, succumbed the pressure of the media. um sponsors and select few of fans or people or, and even Inuit groups saying that they have to change the name because it was a derogatory, whatever you want to call it.
00:09:21
Leo Ernewein
So they, surpa they, they call themselves the Edmonton football club. They succumb to that pressure. And I think what's happened with this team Because of that name change and what's happened to this organization, that Edmonton, the fans have just completely left have nothing want nothing to do with this team until they change the name. and That's what I read between the lines. And i I've said this to ah to a number of people, a number of former Eskimo fans, that the name has to be changed.
00:09:57
Leo Ernewein
and And I agree with it. I think the name has to be changed back to the Eskimos. Why I say that, Their season ticket holders, they used to have over 20,000 season ticket holders, which was one of the largest season ticket holders in the CFL by far next to the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.
00:10:18
Leo Ernewein
It is now down to 9,000, as the article said, which is a huge loss when you lose at least a little under a half of your season ticket holders.
00:10:30
Leo Ernewein
Plus you're not getting gate revenue like you used to because of the name change. And you know, what and and and it's not just because the name change, the, the lack of direction,
00:10:43
Leo Ernewein
From ownership all the way down through management, they've gone through a number of coaches over the last couple of years. um They've gone through a number of quarterbacks, player turnover, you name it. It's been an ugly, ugly five years since that name change has happened. And I i seriously think they need to get back to the grassroots of where they where this football team started.
00:11:04
Leo Ernewein
Because when you honestly think about it, and you I'm not going to go through all the stats and everything that they that the Eskimos used to have, but the Eskimos was a very proud organization up in Edmonton.
00:11:16
Leo Ernewein
I mean, all you have to do is look back in the 80s when Gretzky was there and And even guys like Warren Moon went through the team and all all that stuff that the Eskimos were a very proud franchise. And in in in the 80s, they won a ton of great cups. And they were a dynasty team in the 80s. You know, and even in the ninety s they were they were always in the playoffs and they always challenged for the great cup and all that stuff. And ah they were a very proud organization. And they struggled little bit in the late ninety s
00:11:51
Leo Ernewein
Then in the early 2000s, Ricky Ray came along and just completely turned that organization around and was one of the top CFL teams in the league. with in And Ricky Ray in that time won three out of the four great cups in the early 2000s. And they started off as ah as a pretty big dynasty as well. so um So why I'm saying they need to change the name, it's the grassroots of that of that team.
00:12:21
Leo Ernewein
it It should be called that. it It never should have changed. I totally understand about the derogatory where people are, but you know what? It's a select few of people. If a majority of people, including the Indian U.S. community, decided that this is something that they want to, that it should be called, they need to lead they need to go and do it. and shame on the And shame on a lot of the people who had nothing better to do than to point fingers and say,
00:12:53
Leo Ernewein
you know, sit on their butts or whatever and it said, you have to change the name and you have to change the name. You know, and and and I think people forget that when the Eskimos first started back in the 40s and 50s, and I know this is a ah completely different time, but the Eskimos were created because the Inuit and First Nation community and the Northern community wanted a team named...
00:13:22
Leo Ernewein
that represented them. And because it was in Edmonton and and it was the furthest north city in the CFL, that they were so proud at that time. And I looked this up. They were so proud of that at that time that they wanted a name that they could be proud of and could represent the whole group of of the northern community. So that's why they called the Eskimos. It wasn't because it was derogatory. It's because that's what the Inuit community and the in First Nations and the Indians at that time wanted it the name to be called so honestly guys and ladies and gentlemen my stance on this change the name get back to your grassroots and quit dancing around with this you know all this stuff because honestly it needs it it needs to be done
00:14:10
Leo Ernewein
If they change the name, I think fans will start trickling back. And you know what? Honestly, I think they're starting to trickle back anyways because the team is competitive. They've got they've gone 3-0.
00:14:22
Leo Ernewein
ah But honestly, everybody, the name needs to be changed. And that's that's where i I think that they need to go. And i um I wouldn't be surprised if the owner who owns the team is already starting to kickstart this and talking to the CFL and maybe going around the Inuit community, Indian community, and asking, is this name going to be okay to be re-reacted?
00:14:49
Leo Ernewein
brought up because it needs to be done. So enough on the the Edmonton football club at or the Edmonton Elks. That's where my stance is. I'm willing to take the heat on this, but I'm pretty sure there's a lot of people out there that agree with me that the name needs to go back to where it was.

NHL Career Highlights and Moves

00:15:07
Leo Ernewein
All right, so switching gears, ah we're going to go to the andhl So um before I get into some of the you know free agency signings and all that stuff, um I want to take a take on Jonathan Taze.
00:15:24
Leo Ernewein
Many of you probably don't know that he, unfortunately and not really unfortunately, but yeah, unfortunately he had to end his career um at the age of 36 or 37. I believe he is somewhere in there.
00:15:38
Leo Ernewein
And he has now retired. And I want to give him full marks for even coming back this past season. um he Honestly, there's flashes of him.
00:15:50
Leo Ernewein
being his old self, but I just think with him being off for as long as he did because of COVID-related issue that affected um his immune system, that he just couldn't he just couldn't get back into form. But honestly, i have to give full marks to the Winnipeg Jets for giving him an opportunity, signing him, and hoping that maybe he might be able to get back to least to his old self. But he just teaches could never get... um get himself back into form. And you know what? And fair enough. I mean, when you're when you're as yeah around our age and you've been been away from the league for a number a good couple of years, that the game has changed since he left the Blackhawks. And...
00:16:36
Leo Ernewein
And since the pandemic that, the yeah, like I said, the game has really changed. It's fast. It's, you know, a lot more physical. And, you know, and and like I said, give him full marks for being there. um One of my greatest memories of him in the CFL or not the CFL, the NHL playing with the Blackhawks, scoring the game winning or helping score or kickstart Canada in the gold medal game.
00:17:00
Leo Ernewein
in 2010 in Vancouver. He was a big part of that team. ah Hard to believe that was 16 years ago. And um one of my other great memories of him was, you know, leading the team, leading the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup titles.
00:17:18
Leo Ernewein
um He was called Captain Sirius. I mean, he was basically, he basically, along with Patrick Kane, he basically turned the Chicago Blackhawks completely around because back before he got drafted and started playing with the Blackhawks.
00:17:32
Leo Ernewein
He, that organization was in a tailspin. I mean, I, United Center was as empty as you could possibly get for an NHL franchise. They were terrible. They were, Horribly runned.
00:17:44
Leo Ernewein
And along came Taze and Kane in their draft pick. And boy, they took off. And they, you know, it was just, I mean, also, they also got a couple other players and drafted. And it wasn't just all them, but they they were the faces of the franchise for the Chicago Blackhawks. So I want to send out a huge congratulations to Jonathan Taze.
00:18:04
Leo Ernewein
A well-deserved retirement and a full clap congratulations. on a remarkable career and for even coming back and giving it another go and seeing if you could help the Winnipeg Jets make the playoffs. But it didn't happen this year. But yeah, enjoy and enjoy retirement, man.
00:18:25
Leo Ernewein
So my next take is Leo Carlson. So for those who don't know, as of today, the Philadelphia Flyers have sent ah to the NHL and notified Leo Carlson and the Hime Ducks that they are putting an offer sheet on Leo Carlson.
00:18:45
Leo Ernewein
who this past season played with the Anaheim Ducks. They have off put on the offer sheet a five-year, $90 million dollars contract, which make would make him the highest-paid player in the NHL, which would surpass Kirill Kaprizov, who is making $16 million.
00:19:06
Leo Ernewein
So this is a complete bold statement by Daniel Breer and the Philadelphia Flyers, and maybe a little bit of desperation on their part to try to get a young centerman ah from the Anaheim Ducks into their organization to help them make a push for another playoff run next year.
00:19:25
Leo Ernewein
i totally get this bold move. I mean, Anaheim, I think, should have acted on Leo Carlson a long time ago, and now their hands are tied. And this is what happens when you don't sign your restricted free agents.
00:19:37
Leo Ernewein
When you have young stars like Leo Carlson, get them signed. As much as possible. I have no, from my gather, I think Leo liked it there. i think Leo Carson liked it there. I don't think there was, he played hard. He had a career year under Joel Quenville.
00:19:54
Leo Ernewein
I mean, he played phenomenal, but I mean, as far as Dan, I'm ducks go. This was a stupid move on their part, and this is what happens when you don't get your, like I said, you don't get your restricted free agent signed. You better sign them.
00:20:09
Leo Ernewein
And so now the Anaheim Ducks and Pat Verbeek have seven days. If not, he is Philadelphia's, and Philadelphia will give up, I think, up to four draft, first-round draft picks in the next couple years for compensation. So, yeah.
00:20:25
Leo Ernewein
Stay tuned on this one. My take on this one, think Leo is going to Philadelphia because I just i don't think Anaheim has the budget to sign a guy for $18 million dollars per season. So um I think Leo will be going to Philadelphia. But you know what?
00:20:43
Leo Ernewein
If you're you're desperate to keep your young star and you want to keep him, I would firmly believe that i i think that uh and i could sign them but i just based on their track record and and their you know low budget style that the anheim ducks have had over the years i just do not see that they will be able to sign them but we'll see stay tuned on this one so My next take is the Toronto Maple Leafs.
00:21:09
Leo Ernewein
ah The Toronto Maple Leafs actually did a very, very well done job in this free agency. ah theyve Everybody knows that they took Gavin McKenna and is in their first overall pick.
00:21:22
Leo Ernewein
ah They just signed him to an entry-level contract today. Congratulations to the former Medicine Hat Tiger and Penn State um alumni.
00:21:34
Leo Ernewein
Gavin McKenna for making for signing a contract to the Toronto Maple Leafs today. He joins the likes of Darren Radish, who obviously you heard um in the middle of our mid to late June that he got traded and signed and traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs because Tampa Bay Lightning couldn't sign him to the contract that Toronto just signed him.
00:21:56
Leo Ernewein
um tro also got in Toronto also traded for Nick Paul. ah big He's a big center. front he's a big center He wore number 20 for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
00:22:07
Leo Ernewein
ah The Lightning were able to trade him away to Toronto and got... um Hilda B, who is a young goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs. ah Great trade for both sides. i think they want a young goaltender coming up in the ranks for the Tampa Bay Lightning under Vasilevsky.
00:22:26
Leo Ernewein
And Toronto gets a much-needed second or third-line centre. So... Great trade-on for Toronto. Toronto also got Colton Sissons from the Vegas Golden Knights. They signed him to a two-year contract. They signed Josh Roslevic to a three-year contract. I think it was $4.3 million for Jack Roslevic.
00:22:48
Leo Ernewein
Uh, who else did they sign? They signed, uh, somebody else. I can't, uh, Oh, uh, Brandon Duhame. Uh, he played for the Washington Capitals. They get some size and grit. Um, so I, all in all guys, I think the Toronto Maple Leafs and the management and ownership group, I think have wanting to completely turn the page over from last year into this year. And I think they've, uh, really done a great job of, of, uh,
00:23:17
Leo Ernewein
solidifying what they need and doing some changeover and making ah the roster better. and they also got a...
00:23:25
Leo Ernewein
a number one goaltender in Sergei Bobrovsky, and they also still have Anthony Starr. So, you know, full marks to the Toronto Maple Leafs on a well-done job in free agency and the draft that, you know, I think i think i honestly think that this will be a much better season for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
00:23:47
Leo Ernewein
will they make the playoffs next year will be remain to be seen but based on the moves that they've done today or the last couple days today in the last couple days i got to give them full marks even though i'm not a big fan of that team you got to give them full marks for what they've done uh good job on the toronto maple leaves on the free agency market they may have just kept uh austin matthews so A few other signings that I'll mention and a couple of trades. I'm going to go with the Colorado Avalanche right now. um
00:24:18
Leo Ernewein
The Colorado Avalanche traded Val Nuchushkin away for a drop pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets. This was a clap cap flexibility move by the Colorado Avalanche.
00:24:33
Leo Ernewein
um I think this, for for Val Natchushkin, I think this is a fresh start for him. I think the trust was definitely weighing on on him the last couple of seasons with his based on his play, um based on what has happened the last couple of seasons, that I think the trust of of the teammates and his teammates and his and the coaching staff and management, the patience wore thin. And I think the Avalanche
00:25:04
Leo Ernewein
acted on it and traded the, the, the big forward to Columbus. And, uh, and in return, they managed to be able to use some of that cap money and they were able to assign free agency forward Jaden Schwartz to a contract three years. I think it was $9 million. dollars So, um, good on Colorado. And, uh, supposedly Joe Sackick said that this summer they're going to be talking to the Kael McCart camp and getting a contract extension for him. His current contract ends at the end of this season. I'm full confident that the Colorado Avalanche will sign him. so That's ah the Colorado Avalanche. There's a lot of number of other signings. e LA Kings got Scott Lawton signed. signed They signed Matt Zuccarello.
00:25:52
Leo Ernewein
They also signed Eric Holla. So the Los Angeles Kings off to a good start. uh in free agency they you know with on say kopitar not being there anymore they're able to use all that money and sign him sign a whole bunch of players to help uh guys like quentin byfield and uh uh flourish in los angeles and they also got a ah coach in peter laviolette so i mean great on Great on the Los Angeles Kings.
00:26:22
Leo Ernewein
You know, Nashville was really impressive, and I'm just going to pull this up real quick while I chat, that, boy, Nashville was was busy. Chris McFarlane, who's their new GM, really did a great job of, you know, getting getting players and and filling up rosters to help them move forward into ah next year and and trying to make them better.
00:26:52
Leo Ernewein
And so I'm trying to get this up here. Nashville Predators.
00:26:59
Leo Ernewein
Trade deadline.
00:27:03
Leo Ernewein
Or free agent signings.
00:27:09
Leo Ernewein
Let's see. Oh, yeah. so they this is what Nashville did under was very aggressive. um They acquired Maverick Bork and defenseman Elia Labushkin from the Dallas Stars.
00:27:21
Leo Ernewein
They got Niels Hoaglander from the Vancouver Canucks. They also signed and got Jack Drury. um from the Colorado Avalanche and they also signed Alex and Alexander Kerfoot. So they also, sign that so I mean, good, good, good for Nashville. And they also got Ross Colton from the Colorado Avalanche too. So the Avalanche did a lot of salary cup movements today.
00:27:50
Leo Ernewein
Unfortunately losing Ted or Jack jury. um who was a big part of their team and a penalty killer. But they've managed to trade Ross Colton and Valerie Nachushkin away ah for sour crap reason. But yeah...
00:28:05
Leo Ernewein
I mean, great, great job by, by, uh, by Chris McFarland and the Nashville Predators for, uh, you know, reshaping their roster and, and their bottom six. So, oh yeah. And they also got Adam Edstrom from the New York Rangers, who's, uh, a prospect too. So good on Nashville. So Chris McFarland was really aggressive on that front.
00:28:27
Leo Ernewein
Uh, The Florida Panthers, boy, oh, boy, they're going to be a pest, aren't they? Rocco Gudis signs back with the ah with the Florida Panthers, six years. I think it was like $48 million dollars or something like that. So they are going to be the big pests of the NHL or broad-state bullies.
00:28:50
Leo Ernewein
So we're kind of getting up to the half hour um range-ish here. um So what I want to talk to or kind of finish this off, if you want to look at all the other signings. Oh, yeah. Before I get into what I wanted to end off with, ah another trade happened the last couple of days too.
00:29:12
Leo Ernewein
Unfortunately, Blake Coleman got traded from the Calgary Flames to the Minnesota Wilds. uh, the Calgary flames, uh, get Keaton Middleton back. He's a big, big defenseman. He can, uh, score. He can grind it out. He's a really good defenseman. So, um, good on Calgary for solidifying their blue line. Again, they're getting a lot of blue liners. Uh, then that last, last a little bit to help Dustin Wolf. So, um, so yeah, the Calgary flames, big news, Blake Coleman, um, move from, uh,
00:29:46
Leo Ernewein
calgary to minnesota so um i'll talk a little bit about blake uh blake coleman you know being from tampa bay winning the stanley cup twice you know yeah his first year with the calgary flames was a little interesting um he also wasn't really 100 healthy and i think now that he's gotten out over the two big stanley cup runs that with the tampa bay lightning that I think he's back into form and I think he's going to help, you know, push Minnesota to try to challenge for another Stanley cup run this year. So we'll see what happens with the Minnesota wild. They've got, you know, they've got a chance to make another portion. Blake Coleman will get out of a, a rebuild and go into a,
00:30:28
Leo Ernewein
a team that's trying to challenge for the Stanley cup. So I wish Blake Coleman all the best. It was fun to watch him in the Calgary flames as much as I could possibly watch the Calgary flames. So it was great to see.
00:30:39
Leo Ernewein
So now that we're at the half hour, I want to talk about Brady cut Chuck and, you know, and also I want to talk about Zach warinski and, and all that stuff that's been going on.

Sports and Political Tensions

00:30:54
Leo Ernewein
so
00:30:57
Leo Ernewein
we all i i i totally understand you know back when donald trump became president that you know his attack on canada angered a lot of people it frustrated a lot of people i and and you know what it made everybody turn their backs on on americans and and a lot of people picture americans as bad bad bad and And it's unfortunately it' spilled over to
00:31:29
Leo Ernewein
ah into sports. I mean, we all remember, you know, the Four Nations, how, you know, heated that that's happened last year.
00:31:41
Leo Ernewein
ah And, you know, we all, you know, before that, we booed the national anthem, or not me, but Canadians in and Canadian cities booed the national American national anthem.

ah everybody thought that they were making a a statement on Donald Trump, and basically it just didn't work. and it it's spilled oil And it's bothered a lot of American players.
00:32:09
Leo Ernewein
It's bothered, you know, and and and you know and and it's made American players really feel unwelcome. And as Canadians, I'm i'm i'm really sad to see that people are being...
00:32:22
Leo Ernewein
made uncomfortable living in Canada because they're American. and And we picture them that they are, you know, part of that political spectrum that Donald Trump has set. But you know what, everybody, people just want to play hockey. And and unfortunately, this is what happens when, you know, emotions run high and we allow political stuff to get into our thinking that we push people out. And that... that
00:32:54
Leo Ernewein
is what happened. it That is what happened with Brady Kachuk. I'm not saying Brady's innocent in this, and I'm going to talk a little bit about him because he's not innocent in in this either.
00:33:05
Leo Ernewein
But as from a Canadian standpoint, we really need to be careful how we treat people just because they're from another country. doesn't mean that there's, that they're part of the the political spectrum. And we, we really need,
00:33:21
Leo Ernewein
to back off, we need to calm down and we need to treat people with respect. And i totally understand that in a Canadian and here in Canada, the pressure's on for our all our organizations to ah to win. But what happened to Brady Kachuk was was not was not right.
00:33:42
Leo Ernewein
And it's it's happened it happened with Quinn Hughes. He, unfortunately, was made uncomfortable, and he had to go get ask for a trade and get out of Vancouver. But also, some of that was also his own doing, too. He, you know, in typical American fashion, in my opinion, as a Canadian, he didn't, you know, he didn't do a very good job as being a captain in Vancouver. But same thing with Brady Kachuk.
00:34:08
Leo Ernewein
He's not innocent in this, too. He was part of this whole saga of, you know, on on his podcast. You know, he allowed his brother and his dad to shoot off their his mouth about goaltender Linus Allmark's mental health. And ah he allowed his brother and his father to um shoot their mouths off and is on their podcast about, you know, his state of mind and all that and toughing it out and all that stuff. So that started this whole thing.
00:34:41
Leo Ernewein
last year the four nations tournament about how he was shooting his mouth off about canada and canada this and canada that um and then you know just how he he was acting um you know, in the in the Olympics, that I think people in Ottawa just had enough. And it and it's spilled over into his play in the season.
00:35:05
Leo Ernewein
Honestly, guys, I'll be honest with you. i think the Ottawa Senators are going to be just fine without him. I think he was a problem on this team right from the start. I think he was one of the reasons why they struggled over the last seven years with him being his captain.
00:35:21
Leo Ernewein
He is not captain material. I don't think he's a very good hockey player. I don't think he has hands. He doesn't have foot speed. He just runs around like a chicken with his head cut off and and goes and bashes everybody. And he's also very injured prone because of his play. And so the Ottawa Senators um fulfilled his trade request and traded the scent that forward out into Florida. And you know what? I'm shocked with Florida with based on you know you know how they want to... um
00:35:54
Leo Ernewein
how they want to do things. Now they used to be such a class organization and now they allowed a guy like Matthew Kachuk call the shots on how, how you want to go about, uh,
00:36:06
Leo Ernewein
um trading your team i can't believe that bill zito even listened to me a guy like matthew kachuk to bring his brother onto his team because basically now florida has to be basically florida auto send florida to babysit him and honestly guys i think brady is brady is going to be i don't think brady kachuk is ever going win a stanley cup of florida they've got too many hotheads on that team Believe me, guys, Ottawa's got a good hockey team right now.
00:36:37
Leo Ernewein
They're going to be just fine without him. And they've got a great defense. They've got good forward group. They've got a really good goaltender. I think we're going to see Ottawa do a lot better this year without Brady Kachuk. So I think, like I said, I don't i don't think Brady Kachuk is a very good hockey player. I think he's very overrated. Like a lot of people have said on radio shows that I just, yeah, I don't like the guy.
00:37:01
Leo Ernewein
i can't stand the guy. And go to Florida You want to be in Florida with your brother and your family, you go ahead and you want to be a fool down there, you go right on ahead because I'm glad for Ottawa fans and the Senators, he's gone because it's just it was just um not a good scenario and not a good situation. So um that's all my takes that i can think of that I wanted to talk about.
