Introduction to The Solarpreneur Podcast
00:00:00
Speaker
Look, in the solar business, there's really only two types of people.
00:00:04
Speaker
There's the ones that crush it, make six, seven, and eight figures, and then there's everyone else.
00:00:08
Speaker
The question is, which one will you be?
00:00:12
Speaker
Over the last four years, we've studied the sharpest solar sales and marketing professionals and how they build multi-million dollar incomes using only the best sales and marketing strategies.
00:00:23
Speaker
So how do these solarpreneurs do what they do and what makes them so successful?
00:00:28
Speaker
This podcast is your answer.
00:00:31
Speaker
Join us and thousands of sales pros, marketers, and entrepreneurs as we take the solar industry by storm and uncover what it takes to sell more solar with less effort.
Who are Solopreneurs?
00:00:42
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast.
00:00:50
Speaker
What do you call an underground group of solar professionals on a mission to create a more sustainable world?
00:00:56
Speaker
We call ourselves solopreneurs.
00:00:58
Speaker
And while some might call us crazy, foolish, and dissatisfied with the status quo, we're the ones taking action to create a better future for ourselves and the world.
00:01:08
Speaker
Solopreneur is dedicated to give you, the solar professional, the tools, skills, technology, and mentorship to take the industry by storm and sell more solar with less
The Value of Attending Live Events
00:01:20
Speaker
We are solopreneurs, and this is our story.
00:01:24
Speaker
Boom, what's going on, solopreneurs?
00:01:27
Speaker
Today I wanted to do kind of a different episode, and hopefully a cool one.
00:01:32
Speaker
And that is, I'm getting ready to go to DoorDotOrCon this weekend.
00:01:37
Speaker
So, first of all, if you're going to be at DoorDotOrCon, don't forget to come say hi.
00:01:42
Speaker
I'll be there all weekend, starting on Thursday at the VIP sessions and everything as well.
00:01:47
Speaker
So, definitely come say hi if you're there.
00:01:52
Speaker
What I want to do is talk a little bit about why I go to live events.
00:01:59
Speaker
And then second thing is do kind of a door-to-door con preview.
00:02:05
Speaker
A lot of people go from the solar industry and I wanted to give my take on what I think are going to be the best speakers that you're not going to want to miss.
00:02:15
Speaker
And just some key things that are happening at door-to-door con.
00:02:24
Speaker
First of all, the reason I wanted to do this episode probably more than anything, I had a conversation with a rep last week actually.
00:02:35
Speaker
I was getting ready to go to a deal and was doing some preparation.
00:02:40
Speaker
I was at Starbucks just before I was about to head to a deal.
00:02:44
Speaker
And I ran into a kid that I actually used to sell with.
00:02:50
Speaker
If he's listening, he knows who he is.
00:02:53
Speaker
But we had a conversation, just hadn't talked in a while.
00:02:57
Speaker
And I asked him, hey man, have you gone to door-to-door con this next weekend?
00:03:04
Speaker
And of course we caught up on the solar and how his cells were going.
00:03:08
Speaker
But he's like, no man, I don't really go to those things.
00:03:11
Speaker
And I'm like, oh, how come?
00:03:14
Speaker
He goes, oh, well, it just seems like a waste of time.
00:03:17
Speaker
Like, honestly, I'd just rather be selling and go make more money.
00:03:20
Speaker
I've gone to some things like that in the past, but it just kind of kills my momentum.
00:03:25
Speaker
And it's more worth it for me to just go make more money, not take the time off.
00:03:32
Speaker
And then also I can keep making progress towards the assistant manager position that I want to get.
00:03:43
Speaker
You don't like going to live events, huh?
00:03:46
Speaker
And he just went on to explain that he can get everything that he needs to know from books, just YouTube videos.
00:03:53
Speaker
He's like, yeah, honestly, why pay for these events and stuff when you just get everything you need from books?
00:04:03
Speaker
And I gave him my take.
00:04:05
Speaker
I don't want to be a dick about it or anything, but I gave him my take and just...
00:04:12
Speaker
Just told them that live events have been really valuable to me and that I've learned a lot from them.
00:04:17
Speaker
And I've always made my money back.
00:04:20
Speaker
But on this episode, I wanted to go a little more in depth of why I think live events are super important and why you all should be going to as many live events as possible.
00:04:31
Speaker
Okay, well, maybe not as many as possible, but within reason.
00:04:36
Speaker
I think it's good to go to a live event where
00:04:41
Speaker
at least a couple a year, if not one per quarter.
00:04:46
Speaker
And I kind of broke it down into five reasons why they've been super valuable to me and why I think they're important.
Maximizing Benefits from Live Events
00:04:56
Speaker
So here goes, number one, you learn some killer stuff at live events, especially if it's a good one.
00:05:02
Speaker
I'd be careful about going to free events just because honestly, the free events that you go to, the reason they're doing them is to
00:05:12
Speaker
get you to buy other live events.
00:05:15
Speaker
So at this stage, I basically only go to paid events just because I know if I pay for something, I'm going to pay that much more attention.
00:05:23
Speaker
And hopefully the speakers there, the audience, they came to play big and add a ton of value since they're getting paid.
00:05:32
Speaker
So number one, the educational opportunities
00:05:39
Speaker
are usually really good at these events you get to hear from some of the best people in the industry get to hear from people that are that are steps ahead of where you're at and hear what they're doing and then also with that since you take time out of your schedule and you paid to be there you're going to be committed to learning you're going to be committed to listening you'll be committed to taking notes
00:06:06
Speaker
I've done a lot of webinars, things online too.
00:06:10
Speaker
But here's the thing about those.
00:06:13
Speaker
Usually you're not paying as much attention.
00:06:18
Speaker
I don't know about you, but I tend to do other things when I'm watching YouTube videos.
00:06:24
Speaker
Even listen to podcasts.
00:06:25
Speaker
Hopefully you guys are paying 100% attention to this podcast.
00:06:30
Speaker
But a lot of people are doing other things when they're
00:06:35
Speaker
getting online content, online education.
00:06:37
Speaker
When you go to an event, hopefully you're taking in everything that the speaker has to offer.
00:06:42
Speaker
You're seeing their body language, seeing how they're talking, you're seeing the visual cues that they have with their presentation, and you're gonna take in that much more.
00:06:54
Speaker
There's a lot of ways to learn.
00:06:55
Speaker
There's visual, there's auditory.
00:06:59
Speaker
When you're at a live event, you're gonna get that many more learning opportunities, because you're gonna be looking at it visually, you're gonna be taking the audio cues in.
00:07:09
Speaker
So that's gonna be a lot more valuable.
00:07:13
Speaker
So that's number one.
00:07:14
Speaker
Number two is the networking.
00:07:16
Speaker
I've formed some of my best, I would say, business relationships at these live events.
00:07:24
Speaker
And honestly, it's made me a ton of money just from partnerships I've been on the forum.
00:07:30
Speaker
And then I have kind of my go-to people that I've met from events.
00:07:34
Speaker
I go to a lot of ClickFunnels events.
00:07:36
Speaker
It's online marketing.
00:07:37
Speaker
Then, of course, sales events.
00:07:39
Speaker
But anything I'm trying to do online, I mean, with podcasting or...
00:07:45
Speaker
trying to make sales funnels online, things like that.
00:07:48
Speaker
I have my people I go to and guess where I met them?
00:07:51
Speaker
I didn't meet them at Starbucks, I met them at the live events.
00:07:55
Speaker
If I need help with something, I go to these people because I know they got my back, I know they're in my corner, we're all backing each other up, we're all supporting each other.
00:08:04
Speaker
And that's the thing, when you form these partnerships at live events, it gives you the chance to not only make the connections, but be that connecting person
00:08:13
Speaker
If you know people, if you know someone that's really good at closing, if you know the best person in the world at door knocking, and if you form the partnerships with them, then even if you're not the greatest in the world of those things, you're going to be that person that people go to because they know you've got connections.
00:08:34
Speaker
They know that you know the right people to talk to.
00:08:38
Speaker
So that's number two is networking.
00:08:40
Speaker
And it's even helped me...
00:08:43
Speaker
I used to go to Toastmaster meetings.
00:08:46
Speaker
If any of you know what that is, it's practicing speaking.
00:08:50
Speaker
Basically you go, you meet up with just local people and you all practice giving presentations, giving each other feedback.
00:08:58
Speaker
It's not necessarily a live event, but just they have local meetings all over the place.
00:09:03
Speaker
So that's a good thing to go to if you're trying to work on your speaking skills.
00:09:07
Speaker
But anyways, I went to one of these.
00:09:11
Speaker
And just from the networking aspect of it, I was wearing a ClickFunnels shirt that day, which of course is the software that you can build online sales funnels with.
00:09:26
Speaker
Talked a little bit about it in the past, but since I was wearing this shirt at the meeting, just a random guy there, he looks at the shirt and he says, hey, do you build funnels?
00:09:37
Speaker
Do you build online sales funnels for people?
00:09:41
Speaker
And I'm like, yeah, how'd you know that you're wearing the shirts?
00:09:46
Speaker
I forgot I was wearing the shirt.
00:09:49
Speaker
But from wearing that shirt and the connections I made at this meeting, what happened was I ended up getting a client for funnel building.
00:09:58
Speaker
I'm not really doing that lately anymore as I'm trying to focus just more on my individual cells in solar.
00:10:07
Speaker
We ended up having more meetings just from this connection we made, the networking we had at a live Toastmasters meeting.
00:10:16
Speaker
And then it turned into a client for me.
00:10:20
Speaker
Opportunity for business.
00:10:23
Speaker
So that's number two.
00:10:24
Speaker
You're going to get the best networking opportunities.
00:10:28
Speaker
And that's the other thing.
00:10:30
Speaker
As you go to these events, the more money you spend,
00:10:34
Speaker
I'm not saying you have to be the one that buys the most expensive VIP tickets.
00:10:39
Speaker
But as you get into more expensive events and the higher up tiers of people, those are the people you want to be networking with.
00:10:48
Speaker
I went to Grant Cardone's 10X Con.
00:10:52
Speaker
A couple years back, at the time, I think we got some of the cheaper tickets for that event.
00:11:00
Speaker
But guess who I was sitting with?
00:11:02
Speaker
Guess who I was networking with?
00:11:04
Speaker
It was all the beginners, all the people getting started in business.
00:11:08
Speaker
People that, well, not all of them, but some of them were pretty cheap guys too.
00:11:13
Speaker
The cheapest tickets.
00:11:16
Speaker
So when you go to these events, consider getting the VIP tickets or just figuring out a way to network with the high up people, people who are dominating.
00:11:23
Speaker
Because those are the people you want to learn from.
00:11:29
Speaker
Okay, so number three, going to the events allows you to learn about competitors, see what other top people in the industry are doing.
00:11:38
Speaker
So especially in solar, there's people that are doing insane amounts.
00:11:44
Speaker
Like it blows my mind when I go to Door2DoorCon, some of these other events, to hear what some of these guys are closing, even from other industries.
00:11:54
Speaker
You listen to Sam Taggart's Door-to-Door podcast, other podcasts out there, and there's guys doing insane amounts of volume, closing a ton of deals.
00:12:04
Speaker
And that's what we're trying to do on this podcast, obviously, is get in touch with those people and hear what they're doing.
00:12:10
Speaker
But when you go to live events, a lot of these guys are going to be at these events.
00:12:15
Speaker
A lot of them are speaking, which is what we'll talk about here in a second, of who you want to be listening to at Door-to-DoorCon.
00:12:25
Speaker
But you're gonna be hearing from these people,
Creativity and Focus at Live Events
00:12:27
Speaker
you're gonna be making the connection, and you're gonna be able to hear what competitors are doing.
00:12:34
Speaker
And if you're a business owner in solar, you're gonna hear what other solar companies are doing, what's giving them success.
00:12:42
Speaker
Are they door knocking?
00:12:43
Speaker
Are they getting online leads?
00:12:44
Speaker
How are they following up?
00:12:47
Speaker
What are they doing to close?
00:12:49
Speaker
That's the benefit.
00:12:49
Speaker
It's not just learning about,
00:12:53
Speaker
techniques but you're gonna hear what your competitors are doing it's working for them so good reason to go right there number four is you're gonna be able to market to potential clients and this is especially big for events that aren't necessarily solar related if you're going to online marketing events like myself or personal development events any event
00:13:23
Speaker
Well, even door-to-door con, guess what?
00:13:25
Speaker
There's going to be people that can be potential clients for solar.
00:13:31
Speaker
You heard that, right?
00:13:33
Speaker
So some people are like thinking, oh, I'm going to have to take work off.
00:13:39
Speaker
It's a momentum killer.
00:13:40
Speaker
I can't make any money.
00:13:42
Speaker
If you use these events to talk about what you do, then it doesn't have to be time taken off.
00:13:49
Speaker
You can be marketing to people.
00:13:51
Speaker
You can be prospecting when you're at these live events.
00:13:55
Speaker
I had a guy that I met, Funnel Hacking Live, that's a ClickFunnels event that I go through every year.
00:14:03
Speaker
As you make these connections, most people there obviously aren't in the solar industry.
00:14:07
Speaker
They're from all types of industries.
00:14:10
Speaker
But the people I've met there,
00:14:13
Speaker
They all know me as a solar guy now.
00:14:15
Speaker
And guess who they're gonna come to if they need solar on their house?
00:14:21
Speaker
Okay, so a couple months ago, I had a guy that I met at this Funnel Hacking Live.
00:14:30
Speaker
He hit me up out of the blue, said, hey, I've been thinking about getting solar for my house.
00:14:35
Speaker
Would you be able to get me a quote for your home?
00:14:39
Speaker
Didn't have to do anything.
00:14:40
Speaker
He reached out to me.
00:14:43
Speaker
Came out of nowhere and it's because I met him at this event.
00:14:46
Speaker
Put myself out there.
00:14:47
Speaker
Was known as the solar guy.
00:14:50
Speaker
And so I'm the one he's going to come to.
00:14:52
Speaker
I made that connection.
00:14:54
Speaker
Haven't closed him yet, but falling up from still.
00:14:58
Speaker
So when you go to these events, be sure that you're the one that's not afraid to reach out to people.
00:15:04
Speaker
Especially if you're at other events.
00:15:07
Speaker
Door-to-door con, there's going to be a lot of solar guys there.
00:15:12
Speaker
but maybe the pest control guys, maybe the roofing guys, you can use those opportunities to form partnerships.
00:15:21
Speaker
And hopefully they're going to come to you when they need solar.
00:15:25
Speaker
So that's number four.
00:15:26
Speaker
Use these events to market, to prospect.
00:15:30
Speaker
And really it's like you're not even taking time off.
00:15:33
Speaker
You're just prospecting while you're there.
00:15:37
Speaker
Number five, last one, then we're gonna do a little door-to-door con preview.
00:15:41
Speaker
Use these events to spark creativity, to recharge, to give you new ideas.
00:15:49
Speaker
Another issue that I had in the past when I was in pest control, that was a summer sales thing, but I remember I took too much time off.
00:16:01
Speaker
And it wasn't to go to events, it was just taking time off.
00:16:04
Speaker
And it was a momentum killer because the four days before I would take time off, in my head I was like, oh, I'm going on vacation.
00:16:12
Speaker
Sorry, I got a helicopter in the background.
00:16:15
Speaker
Hopefully it's not too loud.
00:16:23
Speaker
In pest control, I would take too much time off and I had the opposites.
00:16:26
Speaker
Because four days before, I'd be like, oh...
00:16:30
Speaker
Well, I'm going on vacation.
00:16:32
Speaker
I don't need to push this hard.
00:16:35
Speaker
I'm setting up follow-ups, so I'm going to be gone anyways.
00:16:37
Speaker
So I'll just hit it hard when I get back.
00:16:41
Speaker
I would leave, and then when I came back, I would, in a way, forget how to knock doors, forget how to sell, and I'd have to retrain myself and get myself back in momentum, get myself back in that state.
00:16:54
Speaker
So with live events, you never want that to happen and it never should happen.
00:16:58
Speaker
You should use them as an excuse to push super hard before you go to the event.
00:17:04
Speaker
Take as much as you can from it.
00:17:06
Speaker
Use it to recharge, use it to get new ideas, hear from the top people in the industry.
00:17:14
Speaker
Then after it, you need to take what you learn, apply it, and be that much more driven.
00:17:22
Speaker
Just be intense as you get back into the flow of things.
Strategic Event Attendance for Business Growth
00:17:26
Speaker
So always use the live events to go into the next week of work with intensity.
00:17:34
Speaker
Okay, last year, well, I probably went to too many live events, honestly.
00:17:41
Speaker
I would say one live event at quarters.
00:17:45
Speaker
I don't think you need to go to too many, because you can go to too many live events.
00:17:49
Speaker
You don't want to have the information overload and just gets to a point where you're taking too much information and not applying it.
00:17:57
Speaker
But you want to go to these events, take what you can, and then get back at it.
00:18:03
Speaker
I went to quite a few live events last year, and guess what?
00:18:07
Speaker
Still the top closer in my company.
00:18:10
Speaker
Still close more deals.
00:18:13
Speaker
Probably took a lot more time off than a lot of other people, but still was able to close the amount of deals that I wanted to.
00:18:21
Speaker
Make awesome money.
00:18:23
Speaker
So use it like that.
00:18:24
Speaker
Go to the live events, then use them to recharge.
00:18:27
Speaker
Okay, so just a couple of my thoughts on live events.
00:18:30
Speaker
I think they're super valuable.
00:18:32
Speaker
Don't go to too many, but...
00:18:35
Speaker
Go to, definitely go to door-to-door con, definitely go to the ones that can help you in sales, can help you in your money-making activities.
00:18:44
Speaker
And that's using the dominate, using to be the top closer, the top in your company.
00:18:50
Speaker
And who knows, even if you're, maybe you're in not a great situation in your current company selling solar,
00:18:57
Speaker
By going to these live events, you're going to meet people that can possibly get you into better opportunities.
00:19:03
Speaker
Maybe someone you meet at Door-to-DoorCon or your next event will get you into a perfect fit, get you into the perfect company.
00:19:12
Speaker
Maybe that's how you're going to make your next million.
00:19:16
Speaker
So don't be afraid to reach out and network with people.
00:19:21
Speaker
and make those connections while you're there.
Preview of Door-to-DoorCon Speakers
00:19:23
Speaker
Okay, so now for a little door-to-door con preview.
00:19:27
Speaker
Both of you looked at the speakers, started to map out a couple of speakers.
00:19:35
Speaker
So the headliners this year for door-to-door con are Mark Eaton, obviously Sam Taggart, he's gonna be speaking a number of times, Tim Grover, and then Ed Milet.
00:19:52
Speaker
are i think kind of the flagship speakers so obviously they're going to be people you don't want to miss got a couple other ones maybe they're not quite headliners but coach michael burt myron golden he's heard him speak a number of times and definitely not going on not going to want to miss him it's a master closer so definitely don't miss the headliners
00:20:21
Speaker
The big wigs, you want to take as much as you can from these guys.
00:20:27
Speaker
That's pretty obvious.
00:20:28
Speaker
You want to see them.
00:20:29
Speaker
But what I wanted to focus on for the little preview of Door-to-DoorCon is people specifically in solar.
00:20:36
Speaker
A couple of them I've had on the podcast already.
00:20:40
Speaker
And just kind of give you the reason why you should go out and listen to them again.
00:20:45
Speaker
If you haven't heard of them.
00:20:45
Speaker
Okay, so number one, we got Bill Murphy.
00:20:51
Speaker
the 17th, which is Friday, I believe.
00:20:54
Speaker
Yeah, it's Friday.
00:20:57
Speaker
Two o'clock, he's gonna be speaking on marketing.
00:20:58
Speaker
If you haven't listened to his episode on the Solar Preneur podcast, definitely go check that out.
00:21:05
Speaker
He shares some money tips, some golden nuggets.
00:21:08
Speaker
So go listen to that as a little preview.
00:21:11
Speaker
He's gonna be speaking on marketing.
00:21:13
Speaker
So if you haven't heard of Bill, he is the marketing guru for solar.
00:21:18
Speaker
His company, Solar Chi Code, teaches reps
00:21:21
Speaker
how to basically go out and generate leads online.
00:21:25
Speaker
Use Facebook, generate leads, and then how to follow up with these people and how to close them.
00:21:31
Speaker
So definitely check him out.
00:21:33
Speaker
He's gonna be sharing, I assume, a lot more on his specific marketing tips, what he does to generate these leads, how he nurtures them, follows up with them, and clothes them.
00:21:45
Speaker
That's Bill Murphy, two o'clock on Friday.
00:21:50
Speaker
2.45 on Friday, we got Doug Robinson.
00:21:54
Speaker
We haven't had him on the Solarpreneur podcast yet, hopefully soon.
00:21:58
Speaker
But he is the Chief Executive Officer for Legacy Power.
00:22:02
Speaker
He's built up a super successful company.
00:22:07
Speaker
And he's going to be speaking on recruiting.
00:22:09
Speaker
And he's built a massive company, awesome organization.
00:22:19
Speaker
I know he's going to have a ton of great stuff to share about recruiting.
00:22:23
Speaker
So he is in our industry.
00:22:25
Speaker
Definitely go check him out.
00:22:28
Speaker
For 330, we have... Okay.
00:22:29
Speaker
There's actually no one specific for Solar 330 on Friday.
00:22:39
Speaker
But there's going to be people.
00:22:42
Speaker
Speaking on marketing, Lee Haight is going to speak on...
00:22:45
Speaker
I think that's how you say his last name.
00:22:46
Speaker
He's speaking on recruiting.
00:22:49
Speaker
He's from the roofing industry.
00:22:50
Speaker
If you don't have anyone in mind, I would suggest going to see Lee.
00:22:55
Speaker
I've seen him before, and he has some awesome advice to share.
00:23:02
Speaker
Okay, so that's Friday for the workshops.
00:23:09
Speaker
That's 8 o'clock AM.
00:23:10
Speaker
So make sure you don't stay up too late on Friday.
00:23:12
Speaker
So you want to wake up early.
00:23:13
Speaker
Get to these workshops.
00:23:20
Speaker
We've had him on the podcast.
00:23:24
Speaker
probably one of our most requested guests he as well you didn't listen to this episode this man closed 21 deals in a day this brother closed that many deals so this one I'm talking about there's guys that close insane amounts these are the speakers you want to connect with you want to go ask them ask them questions see what they're doing
00:23:48
Speaker
He's at eight in the morning, so go to bed early, wake up.
00:23:52
Speaker
He's gonna be talking about, I know, specifically his door approach.
00:23:55
Speaker
He's trained hundreds, if not thousands of reps, and master closer as well, so definitely go check him out.
00:24:04
Speaker
Ashton knows his stuff.
00:24:06
Speaker
8.45 for solar, we have Skip Kendry, I think, that's how you say his name.
00:24:13
Speaker
We haven't had him on the podcast either.
00:24:16
Speaker
Don't know a ton about him.
00:24:19
Speaker
But from what I've seen, he is actually down here in Southern California as well.
00:24:25
Speaker
And looks like he is president of Current Home.
00:24:30
Speaker
Has done solar roofing.
00:24:34
Speaker
Also been vice president of sales for Sungevity.
00:24:37
Speaker
So has some experience.
00:24:41
Speaker
Also, you got Lenny Gray at 845.
00:24:46
Speaker
I think it's called Door-to-Door Millionaire.
00:24:47
Speaker
He's going to be a good one.
00:24:49
Speaker
So I would suggest between those two at 8.45 in the morning, either skip for solar or landing gray, specifically if you're doing door-to-door.
00:25:00
Speaker
Then at 9.30, got one for solar again, Tyler McAllister.
00:25:05
Speaker

00:25:10
Speaker
