Introduction and Excitement for Demon Slayer
00:00:01
Speaker
On another exciting episode of the Animation Deliberation Podcast, love is in the air as we talk about Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 10, Mitsuri Kanroji. Right off these ads, we have no control over. Sing along if you know the words. One, two, three, it's time for animation deliberation. A conversation and a celebration of our favorite action animated series, yeah.
00:00:26
Speaker
Yeah, welcome back to another episode of Animation Deliberation, the podcast where we take action animation and cartoon seriously, but not too seriously. We are your hosts. I'm Zuhara Lee. And I am Andrew Rogers. And we are back.
Anticipating the Season Finale
00:00:37
Speaker
One more week, one more week left to talk about Demon Slayer and the Soresmith Village. It has been beautiful, it has been fun, it's been an exciting road, and we dropped the news last week that next week's episode is going to be 70 minutes long. How wild is that?
00:01:00
Speaker
It's wild and it's warranted. I feel like this season has still been great. It's not going to be the entertainment district. I feel like that was a high bar, but I have still thoroughly enjoyed it. But I feel like they need a lot of things to wrap up. Even going into this episode, it felt like there was a lot of the season left and a lot of things we had to get out of the way. So I like having this endpoint. But also, I just like this trend that we're seeing.
00:01:28
Speaker
Bad Batch did it to us where they were like, oh, we're going to release the first two opening episodes and the last two episodes. So you get an hour in the front hour in the end. Demon Slayer is doing the same thing where that theater episode was what, like 45 minutes, give or take. And now we're getting 70 minutes at the end. I don't think I could really come up with a better way for shows to start going. You know, give us a little chunk to really grab onto at the start, a chunk to round things out at the end and then let the middle
Streaming Show Release Strategies
00:01:56
Speaker
I hope this continues onward, not just for Demon Slayer, but just anime and TV in general. I think it's a nice flexible use of the streaming space, that's for sure.
00:02:06
Speaker
Yeah, it's a good template, and I'm here for it. Like you said, there's a lot to wrap up on. And interestingly enough, we don't know how much of it is actually going to be action-based as well. Because of the cliffhanger that we got from this episode, it seems like they could be wrapping that up shortly and starting off this transitionary period to what the next arc could
Speculating on the Finale's Content
00:02:28
Speaker
be. But then there's a lot that we could be talking about over there. So I'm fascinated to see
00:02:34
Speaker
how much and what storylines we're able to pack into this episode.
00:02:38
Speaker
Oh, yeah, I mean, even if you were not getting an ounce of action next week, there's still so many questions to answer. I mean, I don't even know if we're going to have time to talk about Hentangu's backstory. Like, when that comes up, I still think there's enough going on with the Hashira, with Genya, with Tanjiro, with, you know, hopefully we get a little glimpse of Inosuke and Zenitsu coming back. Like, there's a lot of stuff to talk about, not even including setting up another season. So, yeah.
00:03:08
Speaker
I'm, you know, I'm not the big, like, Oh, I need an action packed finale. Give me a little action and then give me that talking. I'm ready for it. Give me some beautiful action to dream about. Cause even now, like, I think Twitter algorithm is figuring out how much of an anime fan I am because it's typically just like Washington sports that I get off of that. But now I'm actually getting like these scenes playing over and over again. And of course I pause to look at it every time because they're phenomenal and beautiful. Why would I not?
00:03:37
Speaker
I mean, it is, it's been noted as one of the most beautiful shows. And again, story wise might not have been the highest season.
00:03:47
Speaker
I can't say it's not the most beautiful season, though. That is for sure.
Animation Quality Appreciation
00:03:52
Speaker
They've put a lot of work into, you know, it's only been a year since the last season. The animation quality has gone up tremendously, even in that year time span. So credit where credit is due to this team. Is it affordable or is that distributor? I can never remember what they actually do. OK, we'll go with you for the name that pops up everywhere.
00:04:15
Speaker
Yes, that and the good old aniplex. Aniplex. There it is. I cannot say it like that. That's one thing that we never talked about, and I'm going to talk about it because it's on my mind, was the theater experience. Watching that first episode and having an entire theater full of people all say the aniplex in the voice. I was just like, oh, I'm home. These are my people. It was one of the best moments of watching in theater again.
00:04:45
Speaker
But yeah, I don't know a Star Wars movie and hearing the theme song as the as the backstory starts rolling. Yeah, it's the same exact like internal feeling, but you don't hear people sing the Star Wars theme as much as like all of these people who are ready to say it. I just feel like it didn't come up before. I'm like, oh, no, we need to talk about this because it's a universal experience that everyone makes me laugh every time.
00:05:10
Speaker
with the right people. Yes, yes, exactly. I mean, you're in a theater for Demon Slayer and you're on this podcast to listen to Demon Slayer. So welcome our people. Welcome.
00:05:21
Speaker
Welcome, indeed, and we are going to get to the synopsis. But first, I would like to tell everybody that summer is officially here.

Super great. Hey, I'm actually trying to convince my co-host here of Liquid IV because he's actually never tried it before. Do you have any questions based off what I have told you so far?
00:07:42
Speaker
No, honestly, I think it's a testament to how good of a salesman that you can be sometimes you're very convincing, because I'm sitting here like, wow, this sounds great. I've heard people talk about this before, but never really, you know, known all of the details until you're sitting here like I use this every day. This is great. Um, I just want to know, like, how does it make you feel? How does it taste? What is it like, compared to these other weird, I won't name drop,
00:08:12
Speaker
other ones, but I feel like I've had some of the weird replenishment supplements. But how does it compare all in all here?
00:08:20
Speaker
Yeah. So they do have a bunch of flavors. My favorite one is always the, uh, the orange one. That's part of the immune support. And I don't know if you've been paying attention to like other people, but there are a lot of people who have been coming down with the flu and strap and like COVID's reemergence. And we are like in the middle of June right now. So the fact that they have a whole option that is loaded with vitamin C and meant to help your immune system.
00:08:48
Speaker
but also tastes great on top of that is very convenient.
00:08:54
Speaker
Ooh, that sounds fantastic because I am going to be honest here. I didn't read that far ahead in the ad that they sent us. I thought it was just water flavored. Like I didn't realize that it was a flavored thing that you could put in there. So there's orange. And what else do we have here? Let me tell you about the flavors. We got Concord, grape, lemon, lime, pina colada, tropical punch, watermelon, strawberry, passion fruit, guava, and acai berry. And we have two new flavors at the time of this reporting, which is sea berry and strawberry lemonade.
00:09:24
Speaker
Ooh, I'm really curious about sea berry. I feel like that's been popping up as like a trendy flavor lately and it sounds very exciting. 00:11:01
Speaker
Gosh, just a feedback episode about our sponsors. I don't know why that popped into my head. That's gonna be our weekly news update as what flavors everyone's drinking. Gonna start taking a poll on it. Alright, let's talk about some characters who definitely need some hydration after all this demon fighting they've
Mitsuri's Backstory and Societal Expectations
00:11:21
Speaker
been doing. So this is Demon Slayer Season 3, Episode 10, Mitsuri Kanroji.
00:11:26
Speaker
Mitsuri succeeds in slicing off the dragons, but as she corners the demon and attempts to behead it, she fails to realize that is not the main body and is violently stunned by his sonic attack. The demon goes to kill her as she recalls her past. Born to a loving family, she developed abnormal strength at a young age, along with her signature hair color and voracious appetite. Though she cherished her uniqueness, an annulled marriage caused her to long being seen as normal.
00:11:53
Speaker
She dyed her hair black and ate less in an attempt to get married, but realized she was betraying her true nature. Joining the Demon Slayer Corps allowed her to act freely with acceptance, just as she wakes up to see Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Genya rescuing her. She apologizes for her mistake and reinvigorated, engages the dragons with powerful, love-breathing attacks. The demon notices Mitsuri too, possesses a mark strengthening her, and concentrates his efforts on Mahashira, exposing Hontangu's burl.
00:12:22
Speaker
Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Genya go after it, with Genya revealing his ability to gain demonic abilities upon consuming their flesh. They break it open, but see the exposed Hentengu attempting to flee once more. So we did a lot of speculation off of the opener of this season, talking about things that we could be expecting story-wise. And I just want to say I was right. Sorry.
00:12:51
Speaker
I'll just let you take over now. No, I there was this whole conversation going on as we speculated. I think that was more about the closer than the opener, that it's Oh, she has a sister or something like that is kind of what the speculation was. And it was about family. And the whole time I was just like, I don't know.
00:13:10
Speaker
I feel like that's her I feel like this is like her old self or a different self like I didn't think she had a twin it felt very too on the head. So when it was exposed to us that in her backstory, oh, she
00:13:24
Speaker
just dyed her hair like that was her running away from herself. That's why she kind of looked back proudly to be like, this is where we are kid. This is us now we did it like I will say she doesn't have a tragic backstory. Like her backstory is sad for very different reasons that I know we're going to talk about.
00:13:42
Speaker
But I like the change of pace that oh, she just has a happy family. They all want her to just go out and do her things like she is not from a family of people who's murdered or an abusive father or had to kill her family like no, she's just she's just a girl and life is a nightmare. But like, it was a nice change of pace to not have to go through a tragic episode this week. Like I didn't leave this week feeling sad. Yeah, like I have in the past few weeks.
00:14:11
Speaker
Yeah, it's not like, oh, good lord, you really need a hug type of sad. It's like, hey, good for you for overcoming this. As you said, there were so many similarities in the character designs and everything. And it was that smile on the face. I kind of had you wonder.
00:14:27
Speaker
Is she happy her sister's running away but it really was cool just kind of seeing this realization and development of herself and not only that but she got like her parents support to like they understood who she is and she's proud they're like proud of their daughter.
00:14:43
Speaker
even when she was laying in her bed contemplating life and stuff, just like how supportive, it's like, dude, go to sleep, you're an incredible human being and we love you for that. And the fact that her goal was to, it's just a beautiful story of just learning to accept yourself and being put into an environment where people appreciate you for your best qualities. So the fact that she was able to, I feel like us as,
00:15:11
Speaker
nerds struggle with that a lot. Like, sure, there's a lot of other facets and stuff. But for us as hosts of this type of content, and people who are listening, there's a lot of times where it's like, it's really hard to find your people. Nowadays, like it's kind of opening up and being a little more
00:15:27
Speaker
easier to engage with people who are into this type of content. But there is like the whole thing of like, Oh, you like children shows because it's animated. And why do you dress up like that? And why do you keep up with this? And why do you waste time with yada yada? So it's like, just see this character. Try to be something that she's not to fit into society and then be able to break out of that and be the best version of herself was really beautiful to see.
00:15:54
Speaker
Yeah, like her just her entire outlook on the societal I Guess expectations of herself. There's so many Women that go through this and I talked to Monica very briefly about it after the episode but like you think about the girls that eat a salad on the first date because they don't want to seem
00:16:16
Speaker
gluttonous in any way. And it's like, but why? Why do we care? I don't care that you're going to eat a lot. Let's eat a lot together. Like that's not a thing that I want to care about. But there are so many men that put on like, why are you eating like that? That's not a thing that you should do. So the fact that she
00:16:32
Speaker
could take such a real life example and be like, you know what, screw it. I'm just gonna go and eat and love myself for that. Like, I'm gonna be muscular and I'm gonna be strong and I'm gonna be stronger than the men. Like, it was so great to see her do that. And the scene in the ramen shop with the snake Hashira that I can't remember where it's just like, she's getting to be herself and eat a lot and make a friend along the way possibly more. I do think there is like, definitely something romantic going on there with him. But it was still just like,
00:17:02
Speaker
the way she was like, someone accepted me. I'm going to wear these socks. These are going to be a staple part of my outfit because I've made a legitimate friend. It was so cute in the same way. Wait, like when she woke up and realized, oh, these people love me when Tanjiro Nezuko and Genya were carrying her. It's the same thing of just like, I've been accepted. These people love me. It's so great. And I've honestly been wondering for a little while.
00:17:31
Speaker
because i believe it is confirmed somewhere that the writer of this manga is a woman i wonder if this is a bit of her kind of putting herself on the screen in some way shape or form there was the
00:17:47
Speaker
There was the stinger at the end of the episode halfway through the season where it was just, oh, I want to be good at my art, but nobody appreciates me for the art. And in the background are all the men just staring at her instead of at her art. I kind of had the thoughts in my head at that point like, oh, is this her kind of putting herself out there and being like, hey, I want to be appreciated for the art that I'm doing and doing all these things. And maybe I'm a big eater. Maybe I'm strong, but it doesn't matter. I just want to be this woman. This is who I want to be.
00:18:15
Speaker
And I love that. It makes her as a character so much more fun, not even including the fanservice, not even including the love Hashiro nature. Just her being a person is so awesome and so fun to see, especially in anime where that's usually blown out of the water that women are not women. Yeah. So I'm not going to attempt her last name because I don't want to say it wrong, but Koyo Haru is the name of the manga artist for Demon Slayer.
00:18:43
Speaker
Yes, I just believe they've never been seen in person. Ninth best? Yeah, I'm curious what that list is now.
Demon Slayer's Manga Popularity
00:18:53
Speaker
I'm curious, how do they measure that as well though?
00:18:56
Speaker
sales? Maybe? I mean, it says best selling. So yeah, well, it's a question I've seen some manga data about this. And I can't remember off the top of my head, like what actually wins. But it's something like Demon Slayer in and of itself is fairly short. So are you doing it based on sales per issue or sales overall? Because like one piece is probably gonna win at the end of the day, because they have so many issues out there. But if
00:19:24
Speaker
I'm getting on a weird tangent at this point. I'm just curious to know like, yeah, one piece is number one. So maybe it's overall sales, wherein something else can, cause I want to say attack on Titan is like number one. If you go like average sale per issue or something, which is number 14 overall or sales per issue, 110 million sold.
00:19:50
Speaker
So yeah, that's based on overall numbers, which AOT is also not like that long either. I'm going to roll through it real quick. Attack on Titan, JoJo's Bizarre Adventurers, Bleach, Oi Shinbo, Demon Slayer, Kochikame, Tokyo Beat Cops, Slam Dunk, Blackjack, Naruto, Doraemon, Dragon Ball, Detective Conan. That was such a good anime.
00:20:18
Speaker
Go go 13 and then one piece. Go on back to what you were saying about. Sorry, go for it. I was just going to throw out there. I found in the Wikipedia article the sales per volume that I was talking about, wherein Dragon Ball or no, Demon Slayer is actually number one in terms of sales per issue. Oh, nice. Our average sales per issue, then Dragon Ball, then I think it was Attack on Titan.
00:20:47
Speaker
Or then Slam Dunk. Slam Dunk is just popular, apparently, even though I've never heard of this. We're good for Demon Slayer. They definitely earn all of that. But going back to Mitsuri, we're talking about the fanservice to her character design. There was a Twitter thread that I was going down because Twitter, again, is learning my algorithm and giving me more Demon Slayer content specifically now.
00:21:15
Speaker
And then we're talking about like how it was done the way that she looks and why would she dress that way as a warrior and yada yada. And there was a guy that was defending her. It's like they, she made it very clear that she's trying to find love and she's trying to find someone, um, because like she wants to settle down with somebody at some point and she's trying to find that perfect person that can like match and appreciate her strength. So it's like, it makes sense that she's, that this is her,
00:21:42
Speaker
desire to look attractive by like how she wants to, right?
00:21:47
Speaker
Yes. I know I'm not wording that right, but like this is what she feels that she wants to do. So she's adding like flair to her uniform. But overall, it's like this personality of hers and her fighting style and everything is what has made this character absolutely wonderful. And one of my favorite things that is very underappreciated is in content when heroes make mistakes and there's ramifications to that.
00:22:13
Speaker
There's so many times when people watch a movie and it was like, well, it's so stupid that he did this. Why wouldn't he just do this than that? But it's like, it's a fight and this person's human. They're not perfect. So the fact that she read the situation at hand and then had some slight confidence issues went in for what she thought that she was a kill and then got knocked out by that sonic boom, like,
00:22:36
Speaker
Not that I love seeing our heroes get hurt, but I love that that was how that sequence of events went because not all this stuff is perfect. And despite how powerful these Hashoas are, they are humans in the early 20s that make mistakes. Like the lifespan isn't that high for these people here. We're talking about teenagers and the Hashoas being in their early 20s.
00:22:58
Speaker
Yeah, no, she's still just like, they're all just still people. Like they've supermen them a little bit wherein they have these, you know, amazing powers, but it's still not so over the top, for lack of a better word.
00:23:16
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. They're just lovable and amazing and fantastic and give us all of it. Yeah. Yeah. When we have all of these cool styles based off elements and stuff, like I wasn't sure I was going to like this character much with fear of it being a fanservice character with like, love Hasha, like what do you get out of that? And
00:23:37
Speaker
everything about her appearance in this episode has been like, okay, like she's on the loveless. This is awesome. No pun intended. And I was wondering, it's like, because we were talking about on the last episode, the last Demon Slayer episode we did is like, are these elements actually there? Are they just like fighting styles and they use it to look beautiful?
00:23:55
Speaker
So then I was like, OK, like, how do we represent love? Right. And the fact that it was actually her controlling her heartbeat and hyping herself up, knowing how the adrenaline works and how to
Mitsuri's Fighting Style and Powers
00:24:07
Speaker
use this stuff. And I was like, it's definitely like heart breathing.
00:24:12
Speaker
Obviously, the wording in the illustration goes a certain way. She has her unique fighting style, but the fact that they put so much emphasis on her heart control and breathing control and all that stuff to amplify her fighting style, I was like, that is freaking awesome. I love how much thought went into that. It looked really cool and she is freaking awesome.
00:24:34
Speaker
Oh, yeah, she like, we did have that conversation. And as soon as we saw it on screen, I was like, this is better than hearts, like zu hair joked about just seeing those pink slashes. But it was the muscle tension. It was the way that she, you know, maneuvered herself. And they just kept silhouetting her in the moon. It was fantastic to see. It gave almost spider Gwen vibes in the way that she was like swinging down around the dragon head as she was slashing through it. It's just
00:25:03
Speaker
It's so graceful. It's so beautiful. I don't know why I didn't like fully put the pieces together until this week in my head that she's basically just a ribbon gymnast. Like that's what she's doing with that sword. And it feels that same level of grace, beauty and skill like gymnasts are some of the most skilled athletes full stop.
00:25:21
Speaker
like they just have to do so such crazy things with their bodies and watching her do it as though it's a sword as though it's a fight it just links together so perfectly to see another new form another Hashira just popping off like yeah, I yeah, I couldn't have asked for better to get her in such an uplifting story as well as
00:25:43
Speaker
in a uplifting battle where she wasn't winning the whole time, but it felt like she was winning the energy that was brought was there. Yeah, and Tanjiro even references like I don't know what's more impressive like the swordsmith that made that blade or her being able to use it. And it has to be curious like how many similarities between her style and the snake style there are now.
00:26:08
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, we've seen zero of the snake whether be it fighting style or breathing style. So yeah, there's, it opens a lot of doors because when they said in those first seasons, like, Oh, yeah, this is the flame Hashira. Okay, that makes sense. Here's the mist. All right, makes sense.
00:26:27
Speaker
What is sound? Wait, we have love and serpent. What is this? Like, it's slowly made less sense. Even beast breathing at one point was like, what's this was also when I thought that the elements were there. So I was like, that was beast breathing. Yeah, beast breathing definitely was one of the first question marks. And they still kind of just swept that under the rug of like, oh, he doesn't really have one. He's just being a beast. Like, that's the thing was what it was. He made it up his own because he was just like learning from the mountains.
00:26:54
Speaker
Yes, exactly. Presumably there was a boar that taught him something like the lion turtles here. But yeah, finally getting the answers to the questions in such a format that I'm satisfied. I don't have more questions to ask is awesome because love was probably one of the biggest question marks of like, how does this work?
00:27:15
Speaker
And here we are. It's awesome. But at the same time, they brought up different questions that have to be answered, such as she has a demonic mark. What does that even mean? Like, that was just dropped in there as a little tidbit that the demon said, and they glossed over it. It wasn't part of her backstory. It wasn't anything. They were just like, Yeah, here you go. She's going to meet demonic mark. That's what her sword emblem is, which is I love all of their emblems so much.
00:27:42
Speaker
So real quick, I don't know. I'm drawing a blank if I was talking to my friends about this or if we talked about in the podcast. Did you know that Mitsuri's sword is actually a sword from this like ancient Indian martial art? You can't tell me this is real. No way. This has not been talked about in the cast. It's called an Urumi and it actually is U-R-U-M-I and it actually is a whip sword.
00:28:12
Speaker
What? That is still taught in some villages. A flexible whip like blade originating in modern day Tamil Nadu in the Indian subcontinent. Whoa. Yeah, so they didn't make this up. This is actually based off of an actual sword design. OK, that's I'm absolutely floored right now because we talked about like, oh, how is this possible? It's a super fun design, but like.
00:28:41
Speaker
to see it be real is crazy because the biggest thing that made it feel fake to me was the idea that you have a sword that only has one, maybe two sharp edges. So you have to wield it in such a way that if it was flexible, you're lining up that sharp edge with whatever you want to cut. That just seemed unfathomable enough that, oh, there's the fake point that they've had to make up.
00:29:07
Speaker
But not only is it real, but warriors used it. I need a demonstration. I need to see this going on because that's terrifying. Also, the idea of trying to fight one of these is. You're welcome for your next YouTube rabbit hole.
00:29:25
Speaker
Oh, yeah, no, this is this is being delved upon. I also want to still ask the same question. OK, how did they sheath these ones? They were very tongue in cheek about it in the anime. But what did they do to store these? So
Weapon Inspiration and Demon Lore
00:29:39
Speaker
based off what I'm looking at, like, it looks like you just like roll it up and store it. It's not something that's actually supposed to be like put in a sheath. OK, then.
00:29:50
Speaker
Well, listeners, the more you know, because that was just a mind bomb dropped on me out of nowhere. That was unprepared. But that's so cool. Makes her even better because we I believe we did talk about all of the other swords and styles that we've seen are rooted in some form of known martial art. Like I can't remember what was was was but like that is a thing that people have used with the like two swords chained together.
00:30:17
Speaker
Yeah, his movement was basic was basically like nunchuck related, but blades instead of because that same style of movement that he does like you can do with a single stick as well. Like you don't need something like two objects chained together. But the way that he used it was unique and design based off the fact that he had blades chained together. Okay. So there you go. Yeah, there's my martial arts insight for the day.
00:30:46
Speaker
Yes, well, I feel like there's a good kind of bridge into the next part of the conversation I wanted to have as we talk about the martial arts and the swords. I feel like that's going to be a big crux of the upcoming finale, is what do we do now that the village is essentially destroyed? Like, are the Demon Slayer going to be at their weakest because they don't all have new swords? Like,
00:31:09
Speaker
God forbid Tanjiro broke another sword during this fight and didn't have Haganazuka slaving his full body away right this moment to make him another one. He'd be screwed essentially is what it seems like this is going to work out to be so I'm I'm very intrigued to know how this sets up for
00:31:31
Speaker
As hard as not a place, it's its people. Forest Hills Village is not a place, it is its people. It is its people, but it was a secret location. It was top priority for both of the Hasherists to make sure that the chief and the hire smith survived. So I think they have the infrastructure to be able to recover. It's just going to be a little slow.
00:31:52
Speaker
Yes, I just also can't believe in terms of recovery of anything that we have potentially, we haven't seen it yet, but potentially lost two upper moon demons in this season. Yeah. And then there were three. Oh God, the three are somehow so much scarier than even these two put together.
00:32:17
Speaker
Like, Han Tango has been no joke, but even still does not feel like he holds a candle. And number one has been living rent-free in my nightmares since I saw that in theaters. Those eyes was just... I don't like it. And don't forget, Muzan's above the number one. Muzan's still there, like... But, like, they have an intimidation factor because we know what they're capable of. Like, it's the actual character design of number one that just gives me the hippies.
00:32:48
Speaker
I don't like it. He scared me. I'm scared. You were talking, okay, before I move on characters. Do you think it's a demon mark or it's the same mark that like Tanjiro and Muichiro have? So the only reason I'm even saying the word demon mark is because I feel like that's what the subtitle said.
00:33:14
Speaker
I could very well be wrong but for some reason that's like sticking out in my brain that like that's what hatred said about the mark when he saw it because they also distinctly said something when
00:33:33
Speaker
Muichiro had his mark. Gyoko said, oh, that mark looks a lot like the boy with the earrings. That's the only one Muzon said anything about. And hatred did not have the same exact response. It was similar, but it wasn't like, ah, yes, same mark as the other two. So that's the only reason that I'm like, they really glossed over what this was, because hers also did not just appear. The top button of her shirt came undone.
00:34:02
Speaker
And then that's when you could see it on her clavicle area at that point, which credit to Demon Slayer for not making a big deal. As I'm saying the words, her shirt came undone. They did not make a big deal of that actually happening now that I think about it. Yeah, because it was just the top button that was part of her original look, and that one just happened to... Yes, but lesser anime.
00:34:29
Speaker
Yeah. I've just been watching too many slice of life animes, so I'm just expecting it to be full on display at this point, because that's just what happens. My favorite frame of her, like, this was just such a badass moment was it was silly, but it was just the way that they followed up with it was when they were all rescuing her and that insane amount of lightning that reminded me of Sasuke's Karen. If you know, you know, eventually have an article fan on here.
00:34:55
Speaker
And the way that that lightning came down and she was like She was like silly and how she was doing Yeah But she was like I'm going to protect you guys just being all battered up and like one of the braids being over shoulder and stuff like That frame right there can be a frickin poster. Just how badass it looked
00:35:11
Speaker
Oh, yeah. And that's the thing. I know exactly what frame you're talking about just hearing it. Like, I didn't have to go searching for it or anything like that. There's your social media frame right there for this week. There were so many good moments. And I mean, we talked about it last week, Nezuko's eyes lighting up when she saw her. But equally so, Nezuko like ripping herself out of the wood when she saw her.
00:35:40
Speaker
When she saw that she was hurt was just, oh, no, we need to do this. It was so many, so many good moments, so many good emotions, a lot of like laughs. Gosh, what did hatred call her? It was definitely.
00:35:59
Speaker
It was something demeaning to like, yeah, it was very demeaning almost sexual of just like what her nature was. But her response of just stopping dead, going to the two BDIs and being like, how dare you child you can't say something like that to a woman like me. That's not nice. And then just like, she's a child but demons are older than they look so I still don't like it.
00:36:24
Speaker
Yeah, just so many little things like that that just there was a lot of comedy hiding amidst. Just her entire fight was so beautiful, slicing through the dragons. You know, I feel like she almost tied one up at one point with her sword and then just the final not beheading because obviously she didn't head the dragons, but just.
00:36:47
Speaker
It was almost like a moon blast that she did down upon them with the pink light. And it felt so powerful. And I loved it. Yeah. And speaking of the dragons and hatred, like I could not chill with my speakers yesterday because of how much I love drums. I had that that guy cranked up much higher than I should because I would have kicked in like, oh, I just I love that sound so much. Oh, yeah. So cool. He's great.
00:37:18
Speaker
Cool villains cool. I wish we didn't have two upper moons That's my one concession of the season just because it feels like we have not fully flushed out either of them Like I feel like there was a lot going on with all of the emotion demons and a lot going on with geoco And it felt like they had to share the time
00:37:36
Speaker
Whereas like getting to see Daki go full out and then Gyotaro shows up and he's going full out. And then we think that our heroes are dead and then they both go full out. That was just such a way to fully give us these characters their screen time. Whereas Gyoko and Hontangu and his emotions have had to
00:38:00
Speaker
had to share this, the limelight. So there's definitely some dialogue that makes me think we're going to be getting a lot of untango in the next episode. And it was along the lines of like, I'm not a liar. I didn't do it. Like it looks like he has a lot of remorse of something from when he was alive.
00:38:15
Speaker
that he's been holding on to for a hundred some years and i'm genuinely curious of his backstory now yeah because what triggered it was like a flashback of a samurai being like you are a lying little cretin or something along those lines and like that was why he was being like no i'm not a liar it wasn't even really anything that tundra or the group did it was it's just him like we've acknowledged from the start that he has this whimpering attitude to him
00:38:45
Speaker
And it feels like they're going to tell us the reason why, because you don't just become a demon and not be cocky and powerful like all of the other demons we've seen without a good reason. Because just about everyone else has been full of themselves. And Hontango is the only one that has some trauma, I suppose, from what happened before that caused him to not be this way. And even hatred had the dialogue of like, can't you pick on somebody your own size? Like you guys are the evil ones for doing this and that. So it's like,
00:39:15
Speaker
are these actually like personalities of like human Han Tengu or they're actually like based off of people that he knew these emotions that he's been feeling and holding on to all this time like they they they actually did a good job of like making me want to know as opposed to here's another backstory yeah no that's definitely true because
00:39:37
Speaker
I don't know if they're people or not. They feel like they're all their own unique person or some manifestation of something. So credit to them for getting us on board. Yeah. 70 minutes. Where are they going to spend it? Well, I will give us part of an answer because I did scrub back through the episode just now. The line that hatred did say was
00:40:06
Speaker
What is that mark? Was it on her sense the start of the fight? It looks a lot like a demon crest.
00:40:14
Speaker
So that's specifically what he said. We can read into that however we like. Possibly that's where her inhuman strength came from. Like she's not naturally strong but there's something else going on that we don't know about. That like you can be born with demon power or cursed with demon power or who knows what this looks like. But I feel like a big crux of what we're gonna talk about is
00:40:39
Speaker
whether it be at the end of this season or as the show starts to near its end, it's got to be this crossover between humans and demons. Like now that we know, and we got to talk about Genya big time, but now that we know Genya can consume demon flesh, that Nezuko is still hanging on to her humanity, that Muzan is trying to get back to human, that you have
00:41:00
Speaker
Gosh, I can't remember her name, but the female scientist from the first season that's like trying to cure the demon symptoms with the blood and stuff like that. Like, there's so much cross. Kamaio. Kamaio. Thank you. That Tamaio T.
00:41:17
Speaker
Yeah, there's just so much crossover that I was not expecting this show to have I guess as much depth as it does. Like when you look at it on the face value, you're like, Oh, it's another we're gonna fight demons and ghosts show. But at a deeper level, there's a lot happening when it comes down to both allegory and hey, there's entry here, how demons exist, why they exist and what is going on, you know, between the two worlds.
00:41:43
Speaker
Yeah, that might be something that I actually want to see in the 70-minute episode, is them visiting Tamayo and her giving a full explanation of what these crests are and how Genya's powers are how they are. Honestly, she is- I would like to see this sooner than later. Yeah, it's one of those things like,
00:42:02
Speaker
I forgot Tamayo's character existed for a long time because there's so many things that happened in season one. It wasn't until like the end of Mugen Train when the cat showed up. And I was just like, oh yeah, this is a thing that like Tanjiro's whole quest has been about is getting blood for the cat so she can cure people like
00:42:26
Speaker
she should be a character that should almost appear in every season to give us an update of what's going on and has not shown herself since like halfway through the first season. So revisiting her I think would be a very great note. Also putting her under the protection of the Demon Slayer core seems like a really good idea. Yeah, I mean, we got the little reminder at the end of last season of like, oh, hey, just remind his character exists. But we we got the reminder at the start of this season, too.
00:42:54
Speaker
Yes, I just can't remember what the context was. The cat showed up. I think the cat phased in while Tanjiro was recovering. And he was like, oh, yeah, it's nice to see you again. Here you go. Oh, that's right. Yeah, just that subtle reminder. So maybe that's foreshadowing of she will come back in some capacity at the end of this season because I feel like it's important. And I also just, again, we're hurtling toward what feels like the end. I don't know how many seasons
00:43:23
Speaker
There are left. I'm not going to look into it. Like I said, I know it's a shorter manga, but I don't know how short it's going to be. Yeah. So especially because I think I know what the next arc is. And just off of that concept, I was like,
00:43:39
Speaker
This is the first time I actually feel like I don't know what the next one is because I knew it was going to be into the swordsmith village for a good while going into this, but I haven't heard anything and I'm going to keep it that way until I mean, it's coming out at the end
Future Speculations and Announcements
00:43:52
Speaker
of this year. So yeah, I know sooner than later.
00:43:55
Speaker
If their track record is anything, they usually do like a little to be continued in blah, blah, blah at the end of the season. So we'll find out next week what the season is going to be called. Is it really coming out at the end of what is the date timeline looking like? What did you just say? I don't know, but they've been. No, this season came out and the season started in March. OK, so probably would be February or March that we'd see.
00:44:24
Speaker
the next season. They've been on a pretty good annual schedule. Yeah, they're, they're pretty annual. It was like the first season came out, then a year later, Mugen training came out having writer's strike. So that's probably because they pay them adequately.
00:44:42
Speaker
I actually can't say that because I don't know what the situation is like and do not want to speak anything on behalf. Hopefully they are all living well because we make jokes at MAPA's writers expense all the time or animators expense all the time and hopefully they are getting paid well for the phenomenal work that they do on all of these shows that we love.
00:45:07
Speaker
Another thing I've been seeing on Twitter is a lot of manga to anime comparisons after the episodes come out. And man, some of those hit the hit like a right to the T. It's really beautiful. And somebody had posted that the Giyatoro and Uzui fight was only like four or six pages. So we went to Barnes and Nobles to confirm that. And then just like flipping through trying to find that part was like, oh, man, like they actually got this one like perfectly and spot on. And we had listeners
00:45:35
Speaker
Who sent in clips to talk about how like uzui and ren goku were cut off of this little flashback? And how they like kept at the same too. So it's like it's really impressive. But now of course This is I choice as well. I mean it's just honestly just that one cuz like how do you cut those two beautiful people off? Yeah, there's there's only a taro can cut them off Yeah, when you Andrew rose
00:46:02
Speaker
evolution of his priorities is really interesting because it's like, it's leaning from wanting to change Nezuko to just this every season is more of a burning passion for demons after what happened with Ren Goku. Oh, yes hatred of just like, I'm ready to freakin kill you right now. It's like,
00:46:25
Speaker
Yeah, he has definitely evolved over time. And his journey, I don't want to say has become less about Nezuko because Nezuko is quite clearly the most important person to him, like he would do anything to make sure she's safe at the end of the day. But I, I think he has definitely lulled himself into
00:46:41
Speaker
Well, she's doing fine as a demon. Like now she has control over her blood demon art. She's not trying to eat people this time. Like, there's a lot of good things. I'm excited because I feel like we're getting cute Nezuko back during the finale here, which is gonna be awesome.
00:46:57
Speaker
So good. But yeah, they he's definitely changed a lot. Um, so returning to form, he's going to come full circle in our conversation, returning to form and getting Tamara back to talk about, Hey, how can we cure Nezuko would be an awesome reminder of, you know, where he's come from, what's going on. And I think there's gonna be a lot of retrospective as he gets his new sword and what this means for him and talking about Rengoku and Uzui. Yeah, there's there's a lot to go over.
00:47:25
Speaker
actual dialogue of hatred like being ready to eat Mitsuri like in that moment who was like oh yeah that's why we hate these demons they actually eat humans like
00:47:36
Speaker
vampires. Yeah, the fact that he was like, Oh, she's strong. This is gonna make me stronger because stronger because that's pure clean flesh. Just him saying like, I want to eat that, like good flashes just like, Oh, no. Yeah, this is uncomfortable. This is I remember now, like, talking about it so much pride in killing Hasura because they're probably consuming them right after. Oh, yeah. I want to know which of the upper
00:48:03
Speaker
Moons has the most Hashira kills under their belt. It's probably number one, but I would be curious to know like the breakdown of numbers. Is number one like at 30 and everyone else is low or is it just like five? I don't know. I don't like it either. So many questions, but I will say I have to take this on a goofy note as you talked about comparing manga to anime.
00:48:29
Speaker
I have found a spiritual successor to the muscle mice in this week's episode.
00:48:36
Speaker
did you catch um and it's during like you know how they do the commercial breaks where they have like the manga-esque art in the commercial break there is the snake guy in one of the commercial breaks and his snake just has the goofiest look on his face in that commercial break art i started laughing i was just like oh my god i love him so
00:49:00
Speaker
As of this moment, they are lumped in with the, you know, we've had a lack of muscle mice, but at the very least, I have gotten to see one goofy animal this season. Because the dragon has been too bad ass to claim under our umbrella. But a goofy snake is definitely on the list of things that is allowable. Yeah, because that dude can be kind of a jerk and all the appearances we've seen him. So seeing that level of compassion and
00:49:30
Speaker
vulnerability, I guess like he has a crush was just really the fact that the the snake was conveying all that like the the protagonist and the newest my hero movie how that bird was like the emotions of the character. It's like, oh, yeah, like, I love with you. Mm hmm. It reminds me of, um, it's Celia from Monsters, Inc. that has she has like snakes for her hair. And it's the same like when Mike comes on, they're like, Oh, she's in love.
00:50:01
Speaker
It's yeah, it's that same idea. But um, there was definitely a lot of those moments and like when Tanjiro Nezuko and Genya were saved, there was the moment they all like looked up at her like they were in love and the blood on Tanjiro's face kind of looked like hearts. And it was just like, oh my god, everyone's just falling for her now. This is what's going on. Oh, we love it.
00:50:25
Speaker
We do love it. And listeners, I have found a picture of the snake. That's what I was just laughing at. I will be posting it on the Instagram story. So if you want to see the snake or go back and watch the episode, but he's so goofy looking.
00:50:38
Speaker
I love it so much. Yeah, there it is. I guess an admiration for her just shocked at how much she's eating. Yeah, I don't because like he the snake man. I can't remember his name. We probably looked at everything else. We've googled and we're still calling him Snake Man. Snake Hashira. He's looking like the most admirably that he's ever looked, but it's still the emo like side eye.
00:51:06
Speaker
And she's so happy eating and then you just have this snake like, oh my god, what's going on here? I can't look at him the same in all these serious scenes now.
Mitsuri's Socks: A Token of Friendship?
00:51:18
Speaker
I want to know if the socks have ever been replaced or if, like, was she precious to them and has kept them from ripping? Or have they ripped and he's just replaced them a bunch of times because he wants her in the thigh highs?
00:51:32
Speaker
Like, I would love it if at the end of the season, like one of them was ripped and we got to see them on screen together. And it's like, don't worry, I'll replace them. And she's like fawning over him. I think that would be a lovely moment. TBD. TBD indeed.
00:51:49
Speaker
I have been I will say scrubbing through this episode, just finding scenes. I've just remembered so many things. It's been a great topic for the conversation, but we have gone a little longer than I expected. So I feel like I'm out of things to say. You got anything else, buddy? I think I'm good. All right. Yeah, we should definitely keep it shorter because it's going to be a 70 minute episode that we have to try and cover next week, which is going to be equally as long. And you have a whole other short record after that.
00:52:19
Speaker
Ah, so many shows, so many things, so many weeks. We love it. We love to be here. Alright, anything you want to promote?
00:52:28
Speaker
Yes, so we talked about it last week, I was featured on the source pages podcast this week to talk about flash comics, we talked about the flashpoint run a little bit, as well as just what we think this movie is going to mean for the DCU and everything else. We're all going into it, whelmed but excited after how much Shazam surprised us. So it was a great conversation to be had over with the source pages team.
00:52:53
Speaker
They're fantastic. I'm sure you all know who they are at this point because we talked about them so much Haley's been in the show and BVK upcoming on the show So yeah, it was a great conversation and hopefully I'll be on there after the movie as well But definitely get yourself ready for this movie because it's gonna be a lot
00:53:11
Speaker
Yeah, we're gonna be doing our own comparison with the Flash movie to Flashpoint Paradox, the animated film. So if you guys haven't had a chance to watch that one yet is one of my all time favorite animated movies. So definitely worth a watch. It's on the Max app. That's not HBO Max anymore. And it's good to know that that animated movie and that comic run are
00:53:36
Speaker
arguably the most important things DC has produced in the last like 20 years when it comes to the continuities they've created. So. Go to, you know, kill switch. I mean, it's the way that they created like that animated universe started because of Flashpoint and the comics as we know them today are because of the Flashpoint. So a lot to be had there.
00:54:01
Speaker
Awesome story, lots of feels. Be sure to check that out. For me, 3233 Murphy, we're going to be at Awesome Con this weekend. Our panel is going to be at six o'clock on Friday. So if you're in the DC or Nova area, please come on by and say hello and go harass him on stage. They're going to have to because it's like nerdy family feud. So it's like us versus the audience.
Awesome Con Invitation
00:54:33
Speaker
Interesting. Their participation is literally to harass me on stage. And then I will be getting the sights and sound of AwesomeCon. So keep an eye out for the social medias to see all of that. I recorded four things last week, and I can't... Oh, wait. Yeah, that was multiverse news. That was last week. But just in general, I won't... What is multiverse news?
00:54:56
Speaker
Check out Multiverse News. It is a panel of hosts from the Stranded Panda Network who talk about all the nerd news that comes out. Our very own Jay Scottie is one of the hosts on there, so be sure to go support that. Support everything on StrandedPanda.com.
00:55:12
Speaker
And most importantly, support us. Give us a five star review. Let us know that you love us. We always love the feedback and we love talking to you guys. So hit up the socials, animation, deliberation, whatever social media that you're on. If we're not on one yet, let us know and we'll consider making it happen. Depending on what what media you're telling us to get on.
00:55:34
Speaker
Yes. And on the topic of five star rating and reviews, we love them, we do read them. And I'm going to read one out right now, because we have gotten one somewhat recently. And maybe if you wrote a five star review, we'll read yours off, talk about it, you'll get to hear your name on the show or your, you know, thoughts, whatever that may be. But honor of the love Hashira, in honor of the love Hashira, we're gonna share our love.
00:56:00
Speaker
written to us, great podcast, five stars. So glad to find a great cast about animated content. Many animated projects are for adults, and there isn't a lot of places to chat about them. The hosts have great chemistry, love Zuhair's perspective. Happy to have this great podcast in my queue. Keep up the great work, gents, from Captains 2012.
00:56:23
Speaker
Aw, thanks, captains. Yeah, whoever captains is. Thank you so much for doing that. And yeah, like I said, feel free to leave us those rating and reviews. It's honestly the best, the single best free way that you can help any of your podcasts, not just for us, any podcast you listen to. I'm sure you hear it all the time, but it's because it's true. And what we do actually love it, like seeing that pop up that captains wrote us that I was like, I have something to read on the cast. I'm so excited. Yay.
00:56:52
Speaker
Yeah, after our spider verse coverage that actually put us at number three in our category in the country and we would like to maintain that spot. So please help us do so. Was a crazy day for all of the support that all of you have given us. So thank you. So be sure to check all that out and tune in next time. That's T-W-O-N-I-N and as always stay well. And until we add more to the club, be a sneaky snake and muscle muscle.
