Introduction by Amanda

00:00:00
Speaker
Hello and welcome to the one weight podcast. I'm Amanda and we're the type one together girls. We are stripping down life with type one diabetes from two people who live different versions of it every single day. Please remember type one together does not give medical advice. We are only sharing from personal experience.

Sponsor Highlight: Fieldwork

00:00:18
Speaker
Today's episode is sponsored by Fieldwork. Fieldwork is a qualitative research support system that has incentivized research studies across the country. So you can sign up for their general participant dashboard so that you can stay in the loop on upcoming research studies in 13 of their brick and mortar offices, or you can opt in for the online only research when signing up.
00:00:46
Speaker
they aren't limited to t1d there's type 2 research that's needed there's like fast food research automobile medical conditions mock trials like so many types of research studies and it doesn't matter if you live with type 1 or if you take care of someone who lives a type 1 so parents this is for you um they're likely to have a study for you. ah Something exciting for all of our Southern California listeners, they currently are looking for participants to take part in a study that will be hosted out of their Irvine office. There is a $150 incentive and it will be taking place August 7th through the 10th and it's only an hour.

Friends for Life Conference Recap

00:01:40
Speaker
I also need to disclose that I'm in a current contracted agreement with tandem diabetes. sweet. Now we can get in into the good stuff as you can probably hear my voice is still gone from the Friends for Life conference last week and we're just gonna talk all about it and dive in and give a little recap. It was so fun. It was the best time like I had such a fun time last year and
00:02:06
Speaker
This year, knowing what to expect, I don't know about you, Raquel, but it just felt i don't like I knew what we were doing, where we were going, like kind of the flow, what to expect. It was just ah such a blast. And we had quite a few DMs being like, what is this? What conference are you talking about? like I'm confused. is this one Is this only for quote unquote influencers? First of all, Barf, please don't call us that. ah But second of all, No, it's like for anyone and everyone adults living with type one families kids, but it is like kids centered. Yes, it's at the Coronado Springs Disney Resort Hotel in Orlando.
00:02:52
Speaker
They do offer these around the country in different places, but the Florida one is like the main one, the biggest one. There's hundreds and hundreds of people there and everywhere you walk, there's people wearing devices and it just feels so normal. So yeah. Aren't there like 2,500 people who go? Yeah, that sounds more like it. Right? Like I, for some reason that number has been in my head and that's what I've been saying. So hopefully that's right. Um, but yeah, basically what it is is it's a like three day to four day, depending on how long you want to stay conference. And there's different sessions going on every single day.
00:03:36
Speaker
basically all hours of the day, kind of like a nine to five situation. And so you can go through this big pamphlet and figure out what sessions do I want to sit in on and hear from experts in the diabetes space, right? So there's like, there was a session on like mental health for parenting children, like young children with type one. There was a session on looping. Am I making that up? I feel like I was on all the different kinds of pumps out there and new technology that's coming out and nutrition and exercise and sessions for grandparents of type one kids, sessions for adults. I mean, really, really cool stuff. Although we don't really get to go to any of the sessions because we're in the exhibit hall where we have our type one together table the whole time. So yeah I feel like it's a huge part of the conference that we haven't even experienced. And we probably won't experience. I know. Unless we speak at one, maybe one year.
00:04:35
Speaker
maybe then we'd be in the in the session, yeah. But it's so cool because my first thought, of course, as a parent would be, okay, great, there's all these sessions, but what do I do with my five-year-old, eight-year-old, and 11-year-old or whatever? like They're not going to sit while an expert talks to me for an hour. Well, during all the sessions, they have breakout rooms for each age group. There's like zero to two-year-olds, there's three to five-year-olds, six to 10-year-olds or something like that. And it's all in this big, giant convention center. So if you have
00:05:13
Speaker
if you're in a session in one room, your kid is literally just down the hallway in like a big giant room and they have activities and art and just... and day Yeah, they go to the water park one day and then it's a diabetes

Children's Activities and Exhibit Themes

00:05:29
Speaker
conference, right? So they're safe. Like there are people who are monitoring the alarms and know how to give the insulin and all all that. So um I don't know we saw a lot of parents pretty willy-nilly drop their kids off like it was nothing and then they would go to a session. It is interesting but you're in good hands no matter where you are in that long convention center. It is so big in there like you walk down this huge hallway and there's probably like
00:06:00
Speaker
almost like 20 rooms or doors to these conference rooms just in the hallway. You think you're at the end, but then you make a turn and there's a whole other hallway. And every year they do different themes. So last year it was like space themed or something. And this year was dinosaur themed. Next year superheroes, but all of the brands in the exhibit hall, which is at the very end of the hallway, they go all out with these themes. So with dinosaurs, like Dexcom had like a huge dinosaur like you would see in a museum. Like an animatronic dinosaur. Yes, you could take photos and videos with it. And then Omnipod brought in Bill De Baer to do like a Bill De Baer dinosaur version.
00:06:45
Speaker
um There were a bunch of life-sized dinosaurs everywhere. was kind of I would have been scared of it as a little kid. I feel like the kids loved it. I didn't hear any kid crying. or like I don't know, but it's so funny. It is a little creepy to like when you let your imagination run wild thinking about those giant life-size dinosaurs coming to life. um But yeah, the exhibit hall which is where we were is there's also like
00:07:19
Speaker
ah in between session hours, there will be exhibit hall hours so that then you can pick up your kids, you're not in a session, and you go to the exhibit hall and then you go from table to table. How many tables are in there? Like 50? There's got to be, yeah. Yeah. You can go to table to table and just like talk to small business owners, big business owners, like Walgreens is there, Omnipods there, Tandem, taxunt you know, like all the big, all the big hitters. You just go by and you can ask questions and, um, I, yeah, it's, it's just the best. And my favorite part, like sneaky favorite part, although this might not, um, be a surprise to you, Raquel is getting to try on the pumps. Yeah. Like Omnipod and tandem both allow for like, uh,
00:08:17
Speaker
try it on, you know, like saline trials and stuff. And so it's just such a cool experience and I am eager to do it every time we go. And I just want to keep putting it on more and more like potentially painful spots. Cause my whole thing that I tell everyone is I want to experience the most amount of pain that my daughter could possibly experience. So I can have that like extra level of empathy for her. So same. Neither of them were bad, the Omni Pod and the tandem Moby. Neither of them were bad. They felt the same to me. It's like a tiny pinch. It feels like a little bit of bruising afterwards.
00:08:58
Speaker
It's so weird. Like every now and then you can just hit a bad spot, but it's rare. So I feel like it'd be rare that when you do a trial, you'd hit a bad spot, but for the most part, it really doesn't hurt. So did how do you like rip them off for you when you got home? What do you want to do? Immediately. It was hilarious. Yes. It was within the first three minutes of me walking in our house. Uh, she was like, let me see. Um, cause the army pod was on my thigh. So she was like, do you want to take that off? And I was like, I can, or I can leave it on whatever you want, but I want you to be able to take it off. And she was like, okay, totally ripped it off. It hurt because she was like grabbing the pod and pulling away from the skin. So.
00:09:41
Speaker
ah hopefully most people listening to this know to like start at the edge and just like slowly and gently peel up one little piece of the edge and then slowly peel away while holding the skin taut. ah And then summer got to rip off the tandem. love Yeah, the Moby site. And that's less painful coming off just because it's a smaller ah Smaller adhesive space. Yeah,

Innovations in Diabetes Technology

00:10:12
Speaker
for sure Okay, let's talk about what technology we saw that was interesting because I feel like we did see a few new Things coming out. I didn't get to talk to anyone from the twist company and That's a new insulin pump coming out. They were there apparently but they didn't have a table because the products not out yet but it's like a
00:10:35
Speaker
I don't even know enough about it. It's going to be integrated with tide pool loop, which is really cool. And it's like a twisty circle. Yeah. I didn't like hear much about that or see anything about it. Do you know if it's going to be integrated with tide pool loop as like that will be its, algorithm? I think I think that's what the loop guy was talking to us about, right? But it's going to be separate. So like if you go through their help center and stuff, it's not like you're working with type of loop. It's like, they've got as their algorithm somehow, and it's going to be their own. I don't know about version or if it'll be the same or
00:11:14
Speaker
It sounds like loop is also or has already been bought by some other pump company and we don't know who. So it's going to also integrate with another pump soon. Hopefully to hear. It was so cool. We we've had Andrew on before. um If you're interested in who we're talking about, you can go back to our early days. Andrew Brilliant. He's in the title. So he was there with us and he uses DIY loop. So he was going through like his phone with me and explaining everything and showing me like just you know what comes up based on when he doses and when when the algorithm is making its own decisions. and
00:11:59
Speaker
It was mind blowing. I still don't have like the mental energy to then, you know, like ask her endo to order dash pods and then build it myself and then learn a whole new system. Like we're just happy enough on more than happy actually on OmniPod 5. So I'm like not. not going to rock the boat here, but it was very interesting and I was definitely enticed. What about you? Cause you watched him do all that too, right? go Well, I've had friends on loop for so many years now and so many that I've wanted to build it for me or do it with me. Um, but yeah, it's the technology side that also scares me away. So for those of you listening who don't know anything about loop, it,
00:12:45
Speaker
is not approved. Well, it now is approved by the FDA, but like there's not a version out there that you can just get and use. You have to like code this program yourself. And it's really awesome because there are absolutely no limitations on it. So well, the lowest target you can set, I believe is 87, at least on the FDA approved version, which is so low. It's so simple. Um, but yeah, I mean, I'm interested in it, but I also feel the same. Like I'm so happy using my tandem system and, I don't want to deal with the headache of it all, but I can't say that I wouldn't be interested in trying it once it's integrated with a pump. And then when something goes wrong, you can call and get the help you need and not have to like rely on yourself for that. Um, but there's so many features about it that are really intriguing. So yeah, I totally agree. And then the other one we talked to beta bionics.
00:13:41
Speaker
um Wait really fast. You can't hear my dog whining in the background. Can you so I cannot hear the whining. No another for these whining um So the beta bionics pump is the one it's maybe the newest pump on the market that does not Allow or have you carb count at all? Like there's no option to car count So it's literally like you click a button that says I'm eating an average meal I'm eating a bigger than average meal or smaller and it just learns you over time and gives insulin based on that. But there's not much else you can do. You can't just give yourself a unit. um And there's pros to con pros and cons to all of that. But what are your thoughts about it? For sure. Yeah, my thoughts on it were like really positive when I'm thinking about people who are in need of a break, who are like truly burnt out, who are getting to a scary, scary mental place.
00:14:38
Speaker
anybody who's struggling with like eating disorders and how triggering it must be to have to count carbs and like constantly be faced with you know what you're putting in your body when it's just hard enough to like eat in the first place. Anyway, so I think for that, is amazing if Hattie ever in her life gets to the point where she's just like, I'm not dosing myself ever because I hate this disease so much. This is a pump I would absolutely try and bring up and just be like, that's fine. Can we just keep you safe? You know? And it's like a nice interface. It's a beautiful pump.
00:15:20
Speaker
Yeah. So I thought it is was, it was really cool. Would you ever use it? Do you, do you ever like foresee yourself getting to the point of that level of burnout where you would need to? I don't think so, but it's good to know that exists for like, when I'm super old, like that's something I worry about, you know, if I'm not mentally there or something like that. And there's not someone there to manage my diabetes as well as I can. That's probably the scariest thing about diabetes for me. um But I try not to think about it because there's no point. like Technology is going to be so different. So different. But it's not that they have that now. It's only going to get better and I'm sure there's going to be more things like it eventually. so
00:16:00
Speaker
Yeah, super man, how cool would it be it just like to live in fantasy world for a second to have a pump that just like senses the food that you're eating and then to have insulin that is so fast acting that it acts just like the insulin that comes out of your body, you know, so it's just it would be your pancreas. It would be so cool. Well, Justin from Diebed Tech on Instagram, he just posted something about a potential new insulin that works even faster than anything out there.
00:16:32
Speaker
and um So I don't think it's like anywhere near coming out, but that stuff is actually possible, you know? Yeah, yeah, definitely. For those of us with little, little kids, we've got to a lot of years ahead of us. it Diabetes looks so wildly different right now than it did even 10 years ago. And so I just can't imagine when my four-year-old is 14, that's still little. 14 is still like
00:17:03
Speaker
at the very beginning of your life. you know So it gives me a lot of hope when I think about it like that. um what was your What was your favorite part? like Do you have a singular moment where you're like, those are the best? I don't think I do. I

Impact of Type One Together

00:17:22
Speaker
think, so Amanda and I have been up to a lot over the past year and I forget how much we've done and how far we've come. And sometimes when you're in the weeds, it's like, Is this helpful? Is this working? Are we growing? Like all of that. And first of all, in general, this conference to me feels like high school or college in the most fun way where I'm walking around. And I know some people are going, but a lot of people I see that I know from like past lives, almost in the diabetes community, I don't know, they're going to be there. And it's just like, Hey, oh my gosh, hi, like let's catch up. And it's such a fun feeling. Andrew actually texted me when we got back because he was there as well. Um, and he was like,
00:18:04
Speaker
I haven't had that type of social interaction in such a fun way since I think said since college, like that was the best. I totally agree with that. It's so fun. And so number one, connecting with friends from all the random diabetes things I've done over the years, but also just it felt different walking in this year. Like people know, like, I feel like we're just finding ourselves on the back with me saying this, but people know what type one the together is. yeah People come up to us and say their doctor told us, told them about type one together. people, it's not just about like knowing that, but it's like the fact that the word is spreading, we're actually helping people. And so many different parents come up to us with very specific stories of how one of our resources have helped them. And that is magical. Those are my favorite moments. yeah And also just from a brand side of things, like, you know, I started this a little over five years ago now and it's been a goal to work with a lot of brands in a lot of different ways. And it's been really hard for them to pay attention and more
00:19:04
Speaker
anything to do with us. And frankly, now they do. That's good. I think I nod to be like, oh my gosh, we're doing it. But it's like from a business side and like working as an entrepreneur for so long, like you just never know if these connections are really going to happen. And you never know if the work you're doing is going to get to the level that you want it to get to where it's truly helping people And it's being spread naturally and it just feels so good for that to be happening because at the end of the day, it just means we're helping more people. And the more brands we work with, the more we're able to give away to all of you for free. And that's what we really want to do. So I don't know. It just feels like a dream come true in a way. Totally i agree. That shift in one year, like it felt so different. Not that anything was bad last year, but it was just a different energy. What do you think? I agree.
00:19:58
Speaker
Yeah, it just feels, I don't know, like we we so badly, I mean, we've discussed this with each other and with the community at length, it feels like, but we so badly want to prevent all potential negative experiences similar to the one I've had, similar to the one So many of you have had and we have figured out that the best way to do that is to like get into the hospital systems right at diagnosis. So like yes, we can do a little bit of work with these companies and whatever and get big to like help people see the signs and symptoms. But at the end of the day, so many of these diagnoses are happening to families that have
00:20:47
Speaker
no correlation of type 1 whatsoever. So why would they randomly get stuff in their feed about type 1? And that's just the reality. So the next best thing is to then meet them at the hospital and be like, this is scary. Hey, like there's there's this whole resource hub that we will ah that we have for you. Pick and choose what you need. um Hang out forever, hang out for a month, come back in a year, you know, whatever. And so um seeing seeing the growth and progress and then like finally working with like the bigger companies is feeling really great. My, like the, my like, ah
00:21:36
Speaker
I don't even know what I'm saying. I do know what I'm saying, but I can't find the words. We're still sleep deprived, you guys. ah So similarly to what you were saying, like one of the coolest things that is for you is like working at these company is when like oh my god sorry we can cut out these pauses you're good you're good keep going is when we are in the hall the exhibit hall and and people are coming up to our table
00:22:10
Speaker
And I'm just chatting, you know, like someone comes up and they go, no, I don't know about type one together, please tell me. And then I give the whole spiel. And then like this happened six times. They'd go, oh, I'm a pediatric nurse educator. I am a pediatric endocrinologist and what you're doing is what we need. So instead of being met with like the wrath of like, you don't know what you're doing. You don't know what you're saying. Like, you know, you shouldn't be doing this instead to be like, oh my gosh, this is amazing. We need this. My clients or my patients need this. Like, can we exchange information? That is the coolest feeling. I just love it.
00:22:54
Speaker
No, it really, really is. Yeah, honestly, like connecting with all the people, like the families and everything, so fun, right? And then there's the evening.

Social Events and Wildlife Encounters

00:23:05
Speaker
So here's like a behind the scene look and ah what what happens after because we stayed up. Well, one of the nights I stayed up till two with Meg. you I went to bed, I was probably for so long. The next night, We were out with Meg at this like Omnipod, young adult social thing. There was like karaoke and food. It was fun, but I was just not feeling great. And you went back to bed with me. We just couldn't hang. But besides that- I had my flight early the next morning. So I was like, I got to get out of here. Yeah, I kind of feel like-
00:23:40
Speaker
But like getting to connect with everyone kind of in like a more just hang out way, whether it's the brands or parents. like There's a huge um rooftop bar restaurant thing at the hotel. And after the first main night, like everyone just goes up there. You can see the Disneyland or Disney World fireworks from up there. And like they play the music that goes with them. And it was a mix of like parents that you know I've met, I haven't met. and the marketing people at different brands and other type one. I don't know what to call us. I hate the word influencers as well, but people with the platform online yeah um that I know from online, but haven't met in person and we get to just hang out. And it's so cool. Like I wish that could happen all the time. I agree. And it's like, there's something so healing about it because yes, diabetes is discussed, but not in a way where it
00:24:34
Speaker
is the star of the show. It's like we are living lives. We're having really good, healthy, in-depth conversations that like contribute to building rapport and just like, you know, really pouring into like these awesome relationships and diabetes is just naturally woven into the conversation and it's a beautiful reflection of how once Once you get to a point where you're comfortable with your management style and like things just make sense you know to you, like it's ah it's a reflection of how you live life on a day-to-day basis with diabetes. right
00:25:17
Speaker
yeah like plan Like I am not my diabetes but diabetes is deeply part of me kind of thing and I am not my child's diabetes but my child's diabetes is deeply part of me and who I am and the decisions I make every day and that's never going away anymore. like that's woven into the fiber of who I am. And so then to be surrounded by other people who act, talk, and think that way, it was just so refreshingly like
00:25:49
Speaker
this is normal for all of us. ah yeah It'd be like if suddenly the whole entire world had type 1 diabetes. Yes, it's like I can breathe. like It's just like, oh, okay, like I'm around these people who get it and they get the world that we're in and the work we're trying to do. And I think subconsciously, I don't realize how much when I'm around others in my day-to-day life, like them not understanding all of that is hard. you know It's okay and it's the reality, but there is like a weight that's lifted off when it's like, okay, you just get it, we're doing this. you know yeah
00:26:25
Speaker
Yeah, definitely. Yeah. Well, okay. Should we go through some of the funny things? yeah because we good yes definitely We wanted to have Meg on. art We couldn't get our schedules aligned, um but she was there. We were all sharing a room, three of us, which was so fun, but she had a funny thing happen. Oh my gosh, with Mary. So Mary from Mary type one was also there the first couple of nights, which was a blast. I wish she had been able to stay the whole time um that they, Megan Mary like left. We were all at dinner or something and they left to go.
00:27:05
Speaker
um get changed. And Raquel and I just got a picture out of nowhere of Meg like down on the ground and a thing close by. And when you zoom on the thing, It's a dead bird. Oh, my gosh.
00:27:28
Speaker
A freaking bird like flew towards Mary and Meg as they were walking up a set of outdoor stairs to get to their hotel room. And Mary ducked and Meg didn't have time to process what was happening. And so the bird like a full sight, not a little bird, you guys, like a big big big black bird, like a freaking, yeah, a bird. Yeah, God, it like flew into her shoulder and it just collapsed on the ground and it wasn't moving and I don't know if it was breathing, but it looked super dead and they just like freaked out and laughed hysterically. Like we were all completely shocked and went about our night
00:28:17
Speaker
or attempted to normally. And then Mary, this happened in front of Mary's room. So then when Mary went back to her room, she was like, you guys, the bird was still there and it is alive, but it for sure has a broken wing and it tried to like attack her. It like like went down a step too. It's like they knew that it was still alive. Like it was trying to move. It charged her. Remember? Angry bird. it's I am traumatized from this and I wasn't even there so I can't imagine how they feel. Oh my gosh. That's so scary. Hilarious. Hilarious. So scary. Meg was wearing a jean jacket so at least Bird didn't get on her skin directly. True.
00:29:09
Speaker
ah or never will be forgotten those Oh, I didn't even tell you this. But okay. So side I posted a story after you left of the beautiful water. So like this resort's gorgeous. You walk out of your room. There's like a big kind of Lake Creek thing with a restaurant in the middle of the water. Like you have to take a bridge to get there. It's really cute, but there are signs everywhere that say like alligators and snakes in the water. Shut up. Did you see an elevator? No. I wanted to see an alligator really bad, but I had posted a video and then like showed the sign because it it's kind of crazy. Like this is at a Disney resort. There are kids everywhere. There's a not a fence around most of the water. Like a kid could just run it wild. Not that there's anything they can do to keep alligators away. I don't know. They obviously didn't put them there, but I posted that and then this girl who was also there, um, it's a lady who works for tandem. She had,
00:30:03
Speaker
messaged me and she was like, Raquel, I saw multiple snakes yesterday on my way back to my room and she sent me photos. And there were like big snakes on the walkway. She was like, I was FaceTiming my friend all of a sudden, there's these huge snakes right in front of me. I was like, what? So then the next night I was so careful about walking and like staying alert. But yeah, that's so scary. I hate that so much. yeah Oh my gosh. It's funny because like, yes, I desperately wanted to see an alligator, but I only wanted to see like its head poking out of the water. Yeah. And that's it. Otherwise they can stay in the swamp. Thank you. Oh, another funny thing that happened. Okay. So we went to the pool.
00:30:49

So we were like buzzing, especially Meg and I, we were like, we need to get outside, but also outside it's 90 something degrees and so humid because we're in Orlando. So finally on Friday, I think the last day we're like, all right, let's go to the pool and just relax. So we went and we sat by the hot tub, which was like kind of further from the pool. And we all got in and you all got out to get food, but I just like needed a moment to myself in the water. We were hanging out and then eventually we were all just laying out by the pool. And what happened? um Someone pooped in the pool. yeah Someone pooped in the freaking pool. And we all of a sudden I like there was there were no screams necessarily, but there was all of a sudden a

like um you could just see that the water was totally empty and like the pool was totally empty and then workers going around with a big giant long pole with like... It looked like they were chasing an animal. We were like, is there an animal in the water? Yes. And then we were sitting with um another friend too. So there were four of us and Raquel, you and Meg got up to leave and we had talked about like how long until the pool opens back up. because it was hot, but I like with my nursing background and stuff was like, not today. Why, why would they open it back up today? Like you that's gnarly. The alternative is like so many chemicals in there. And then it's just like, go jump into chemicals. Like, I don't know, whatever. And
00:32:26
Speaker
i I don't know. I was talking to the our other friend who said yeah who's sitting right next to us. And I was like, he's like, well, what what do you think? And I'm like, I mean, they got to fish it out. They have to put the chemicals in. They have to give it time. They have to test the water to make sure that it's safe. And then they'll open it. So like tomorrow morning is my guest. He's like, you're right. You're right. They freaking open the pool 20 minutes later. Yeah. Yeah. It's just so gross. I can't. ah i already I already have such a hard time with public pools. Like I just... Cause the pee and everything. that's in Yeah. Yeah. And and that it's like something I've had to force myself to get over because I've got kids now, you know, it's like gotta do it. Oh, gnarly. Yeah.
00:33:15
Speaker
I know it was refreshing, but I'm glad that I didn't go back in after that. So gross. Yeah. Yeah.

Logistics and Diabetes Management Challenges

00:33:23
Speaker
What what else? I know. hello ah Well, like last year I had my ketone situation this year. I was so thankful to not, but Meg's pump did break. So that was a bummer. Um, but she got it all figured out. That sucked. Oh, and then, um, So we were supposed to have a box of diabetes. I know I had mentioned on here that we were going to have diabetes available for purchase for the first time ever in person. And Megan has been working so hard to make all these extra diabetes and they take her a long time to crochet, um, on top of all the normal orders that people are submitting. So anyways, she sent a big box of them and it said it was going to arrive on Tuesday, which was the day before everything started.
00:34:08
Speaker
but it didn't end up arriving until Monday morning. So after I left like the following Monday, so we didn't have those, which was a bummer, but everyone who was there, thank you for being so understanding. Cause I kept saying, come back tomorrow. We're going to have patches or we're going to have diabetes. And then it never happened. But the good news is once they get back to her right now, they're being returned to sender. Hopefully it works. Um, we're going to do like a big unique diabetes sale because, um, she made some different ones that we don't normally sell. So I think it'll actually be really fun for the community. So look out for that. Yeah. So cute.
00:34:46
Speaker
um Yeah, I don't know. What else did we do? I'm trying to think. It was it was really just a lot of lot of networking and a lot of um chatting with the the community. That's always my favorite part is like standing at our table and yeah, chatting with everyone. So many kids coming by, so many kids eager for stickers and temporary tattoos and ah we show us Oh, yeah. We ordered like this big vinyl poster that's like six feet tall. And um it had some of our diabetes on it, like outlines of them and other fun things. And then we brought a bunch of fun markers and had and everyone who stopped by our table contribute to coloring, coloring a giant coloring page.
00:35:38
Speaker
It was so cute. It was fun to have like an interactive thing at the table. We'll have to start brainstorming for what we will have next year. Yeah. How was it being away from Hattie again? I know we've talked about it in the past, but now that it's been more time, um, I know Danny did great with the blood sugars. So do you want to speak to that at all? and No, i I mean, yes, I can speak to it, but, um, i I just miss them. I miss being around them, but nothing about like anxiety surrounding diabetes. He crushed it. He worked really hard. And I got home to her being like 95% range for the week I was gone. So it's like, cool. Thanks. Bye.
00:36:23
Speaker
yeah better than I did for that week with the chaos. It was great. Well, poor thing. She really needed it because our vacation sugars were shit. They were an absolute nightmare just because we were like, i'm I mean, we should probably do it an episode on this too, just how we deal with vacation sugars. But we were in Tahoe so we had the altitude, the heat, the swimming, the constant snacking, the constant snacking then mixed with like I'm not hungry at all and don't want any food. The constant snacking which then means like no protein and fat no matter how much we try and so and then we traveled from Tahoe to Bend and in Bend it was like 95 degrees and they were in a wedding so there is adrenaline from that and

my parents were helping, which is so, I'm so grateful. But when there's many, okay, you know how the saying is like many hands make for lighter work. Oh yeah. Have you heard that? Okay. Not with diabetes. So many hands with diabetes management makes for more work, which is like in the kitchen. Yeah. Yeah. And that is not like a knock on anyone who helps us. We are so grateful for the help, but like, even if Danny it takes over for, you know, like he took over for a week, then I came home and her sugars immediately, her time and range immediately fell back down a little bit because I wasn't used to it. And so there's just something about the continuity of care, but you can't, you can't do continuity of care a hundred percent of the time because then life isn't balanced and your mental health and like,
00:38:09
Speaker
yeah you know Unless you're the one living with it. I know. yeah but yeah I know. But in a different way. la yeah It's a hard topic to talk about. Like to you. But just because like obviously I wish I could take it from you. Whatever. But if I did, your sugars would be shit. Sorry. Until I figured it out. Right. It's the same thing. And that's why I never really asked for help. But I have thought about like, if Kevin and I get to the point of having kids and then like, I've heard so many people say, especially when you're in labor, your husband will like do everything for you. Yeah. And I'm like, okay, well, that is the most important time to have the best blood sugars. So I got to start training early. Yeah.
00:39:02
Speaker
Yeah, definitely. I think if your settings are dialed in, you should be okay. Hopefully. Yeah.
