WILD ONEZ

Viv

00:07:32
Danielle
Hi, I'm Danielle. i am from Michigan, but I currently live in Lafayette, Louisiana with Veev. I don't know if you're saying that on the podcast, but I just said it.
00:07:41
Viv
Yes! Yes! No, we live together. We we get a run together. So fun. Sorry, I'm jumping ahead, but go ahead.
00:07:52
Danielle
i've So Viv and I go to the same run club. we have so much fun. i grew up mostly swimming, not running. So the running is kind of new to me. But honestly, it's really a maybe taken taken my favor in the last two years. But yeah, that's that's me.
00:08:15
WILD ONEZ
What's your background in like high school sports, endurance sports? Where has your like inspiration to be active? Where does that where does that come

Danielle's Athletic Journey

00:08:26
WILD ONEZ
from?
00:08:27
Danielle
yeah so I started swimming year round in sixth grade and swam through high school. And then in college, i kind of had this weird like...
00:08:40
Danielle
what do what do I do now? Like, I like did swim sometimes, but like not having a team makes it kind of different or like not having that community. and so I like kind of tried lifting weights and just like honestly, like got really out of shape in college and afterwards.
00:08:57
Danielle
And then I took like a cycling class that our like workplace offered like a little trial of and like having that like
00:08:58
WILD ONEZ
I feel that.
00:09:07
Danielle
feeling of pushing myself, like, re-inspired me to get involved. And I like, okay, I want to do a triathlon. Because I had done... i had done... So I did do some triathlons when I was, like, in middle school with, like a youth triathlon team.
00:09:20
Danielle
was like, I'm going to get back into that. And then i heard about swimrun, and I was like, okay, actually... I mostly just like the swimming and running and I don't have to bike if I can swim and run.
00:09:27
Annie P.
you
00:09:32
Danielle
But yeah, that's kind of where I came from. Like the last two years I've spent like rebuilding up athletic background. But yeah.
00:09:41
Viv
That's awesome.
00:09:42
Danielle
I like that.
00:09:42
WILD ONEZ
Love that. Yeah, it definitely takes some time to rebuild.
00:09:43
Viv
missque I
00:09:45
WILD ONEZ
I had a very similar experience post high school where college was just like a very sedentary, focused on school time of my life. And it wasn't until I I moved out to Colorado until I got active again.
00:09:58
WILD ONEZ
And it is a journey, but it is so fun.
00:10:01
Danielle
Yes, yeah. Yeah, I think finding that community to like replicate a team sport or like that environment again is really important to like, for the exercise.
00:10:09
Viv
It's hard. Yeah.
00:10:12
Annie P.
It's huge.
00:10:13
Viv
Absolutely. You need that. You need people to suffer mutually together.
00:10:18
Danielle
Yes.
00:10:18
Annie P.
yeah
00:10:19
WILD ONEZ
yeah
00:10:20
Viv
But also, but also, but also cheer you on too in the, in the, in the hard part too. So, oh my gosh.
00:10:25
Danielle
Yes.
00:10:25
Viv
Yeah. Annie, what about you?

Annie's Outdoor Adventures

00:10:27
Viv
What's your, what's your athletic background? What kind of interests you to keep active?
00:10:34
Annie P.
Yes. so right now I live in West Texas. And so, you know, I grew up in North Dakota, Minnesota. And so I just, I just love to play outside. Like, I just loved hiking. I like trail running, kayaking, biking, lift weights. So I just...
00:10:53
Annie P.
I just like to be active and I like to do hard things. I always say like, I'll do anything once, maybe twice. and So that was my attitude going into swim run as well.
00:10:59
Viv
There you go. Yeah. there go
00:11:02
WILD ONEZ
you
00:11:03
Annie P.
I was i like it. And then in 2019, 2020, 21, maybe around there, I started doing Brazilian jujitsu.
00:11:13
Annie P.
And so that's, that really like stuck with me. And i just, I loved being around those people that are just like, we can do hard things. Like you should do hard things. And i just wanted to keep doing hard things. Like I like being tired and exhausted, but laughing at the same time.
00:11:30
Annie P.
And that's, that's exactly what happened at the swim run.
00:11:34
WILD ONEZ
Peace.
00:11:35
Annie P.
i zero swimming experience. Just, just like to run. i just put on some shoes and just, quick. run And it was the support I received from everyone was fantastic. So and I just like to be active.
00:11:49
WILD ONEZ
Awesome. Love that. Yeah, we were so excited to have both of you guys on at the same time because Swim Run Austin just this past year was the very first time

First Swimrun Experiences

00:12:00
WILD ONEZ
either of you had done a swim run race. And so we wanted to see what your perspective was on like the race community, like the preparation.
00:12:09
Viv
Like joining it, like everything, the whole nine yards.
00:12:12
WILD ONEZ
Yeah, like how did it
00:12:14
Viv
Give us a tea.
00:12:15
WILD ONEZ
Yeah, yeah like how did how did that feel coming from your backgrounds into a totally new sport for you?
00:12:24
Annie P.
Danielle, do you want to go first again?
00:12:24
Danielle
yes Yeah, we can have a rhythm.
00:12:26
Viv
you go.
00:12:27
Annie P.
right
00:12:30
Danielle
It was good. I mean, I could see from Viv's experience that there was a good community, but also Viv is very outgoing.
00:12:39
Danielle
So I was like, I don't like I wasn't sure how it would feel for me.
00:12:40
Viv
Thank
00:12:45
Danielle
But I think Like, even the race having, like, the communal lodging when you sign up is a pretty good indication of what the environment will be.
00:12:56
Danielle
So that kind of got me excited. and I've always, like, I've always loved... like in college when I would like kind of meet someone start being friends with them I loved like inviting them on a camping trip because I think it was just like such a a fun like kind of silly way to get to know someone you don't know that well so the idea of like lodging before the race was really exciting and every everyone of course is so nice and so helpful like
00:13:13
Viv
Yeah. yeah
00:13:23
Danielle
Staying before, I think if you're like going into the race, not really knowing anyone doing the communal lodging is such a good idea because like everyone was sharing advice, like sharing nerves. We went and walked the course beforehand together, like tried on all of our equipment. Like it was a, it was a really good experience and it felt like you were doing it with a bunch of friends, even if you potentially didn't know anyone there. good.
00:13:51
WILD ONEZ
You raced as a solo racer for Austin World Series, correct?
00:13:51
Danielle
good
00:13:56
Danielle
Yes, yes I did.
00:13:58
Viv
Yeah.
00:13:59
Danielle
Yeah.
00:13:59
WILD ONEZ
Okay. That's pretty badass.
00:14:02
Viv
It is bad.
00:14:02
Danielle
Oh
00:14:02
WILD ONEZ
You're just going all in for your first swim run.
00:14:02
Viv
It is so badass.
00:14:04
Annie P.
I agree. listen
00:14:06
Danielle
yeah, well, I felt committed.
00:14:09
Viv
You're like, it's fine. We're going to do it. We're going to, like, I asked Danielle. She's like, I found a person. but I was like, do you need a partner? Like, I'll find you a buddy. Are you short course? are you long course? Like, what what are you feeling? And she's like, oh, long course, solo.
00:14:20
Viv
And I was like, all right. She didn't come to play. We're here. We're ready to go. don't like...
00:14:26
Annie P.
Yeah.
00:14:27
Viv
I was like a proud big sister. was like, my gosh, she's killing it. I think cry when you cross the finish line. I was so excited for you because when anybody says, I'm going to do swim run, I'm like, I hope you like it because it's like when recommend something, you're like, oh man, I don't want to fail this person.
00:14:35
Annie P.
Thank you.
00:14:44
Viv
And you just took it and really absorbed into the environment too.
00:14:45
WILD ONEZ
Thank you.
00:14:52
Viv
I know that you can start off quiet, but and like people get to know you and they're like, I love Danielle. And I was like, how can you not love this person? Like, it's awesome. And like, Annie, you assimilated just like the same, like it was seamless. Like, it seemed like your guys' attitudes, like you guys were there.
00:15:09
Viv
Like this was like your 20th footman race, just the way that you guys presented yourself, the way that you guys ran the race with everybody. Like it was incredible. Annie, you did do it with our friend Kate.
00:15:20
Viv
You guys did short course. you guys did long course, right?
00:15:23
WILD ONEZ
So she's got a story about that because she signed up originally as an experience racer solo.
00:15:24
Annie P.
A medium.
00:15:28
Viv
Yes.
00:15:32
WILD ONEZ
and then if y'all know Kate Melberg, also, yeah yeah, no Kate. Everybody knows her by Kate.
00:15:39
Viv
Everyone knows Kate, yeah.
00:15:40
WILD ONEZ
If you know Kate, she knows she loves to have a good time. And so persuaded Kate Melberg
00:15:46
Viv
Yeah, how did you guys get paired up?
00:15:49
WILD ONEZ
Annie to sign up with her as a partner into the short course distance, right?
00:15:57
Annie P.
Well, initially, yes. So like you said, I signed up solo, whatever. And then for those who don't know, Sarah and I actually work together, but we work remotely. So this was my first time meeting Sarah, meeting all these people.
00:16:09
WILD ONEZ
lovely.
00:16:10
Annie P.
It was awesome. And so Sarah got Kate and i just in touch to see if we could be partners. And Kate's like, well, like how much do you run normally? and I was like, you know, I don't know.
00:16:20
Annie P.
I just kind of run like blah, blah, blah, like seven miles here, three miles here. And she's like, let's just do the Let's just do the middle one because you're basically running the same. And I was like, OK, you say so. like Zero questions asked. like She just one one sentence. I was like, OK, I crushed you. like So it was so fun.
00:16:42
WILD ONEZ
Oh, I love that.
00:16:43
Viv
What did you think about swimrun when you got, it's like, I mean, I'll kick it to you, Annie, a little bit more to pick your brain because like, I know Sarah probably got you to drink the Kool-Aid since you guys worked together and kind of the whole nine yards there. But what did you think about it when she told you, hey, you should do this race?

Community and Overcoming Challenges

00:17:01
Annie P.
i like I said, I just kind of like to do hard things. And I was like, this sounds like a hard thing. Like, cool. And so, i mean, you know, I asked her to just some questions and I was like, gosh, that sounds so fun. Like, I've always wanted to do something like this.
00:17:15
Annie P.
And I actually always like to, i like I tell a story to my family. Like when I first got there and I got to the Airbnb, I like looked around and like these freaking athletes.
00:17:25
Annie P.
And I was like, oh my God, I do not belong here. Like these guys are like athletes. And I was like, it's fine. Like, thank goodness I do like jujitsu so I can have something cool to talk about with these people.
00:17:38
Danielle
Thank you.
00:17:39
Viv
It is so badass that you do Juju.
00:17:39
WILD ONEZ
Thank you.
00:17:41
Annie P.
but
00:17:41
Viv
It is incredible.
00:17:41
Annie P.
was like, I was like, oh my gosh, these guys are amazing. But like they never made like you guys, no one ever once made me feel out of place. And oh my gosh, we're going to cry. But it was like, that was just like something I haven't like felt in a while.
00:17:56
Annie P.
so was like dumb, dumb, stupid.
00:17:56
Viv
God, you're crying.
00:18:01
Annie P.
Okay.
00:18:04
Annie P.
But no, that was like a community I haven't like felt in a while. So it was really nice. but
00:18:08
WILD ONEZ
Yeah. I mean, like swimrun is really impactful, like the community in general. i can say pretty much the same thing from my first swimrun experience into like Trista and Amy and Marcus and Beaks just like adopting us under their wing and just welcoming us into the community. Like we'd already been there for years. Like it was just like this, yeah, like family that,
00:18:35
WILD ONEZ
just existed overnight and it was like the most meaningful connection that I had had and yeah also a long time I did not think a race in a group of people could have that much of an impact on my life and here we are today so it's
00:18:36
Viv
You didn't know you needed
00:18:41
Annie P.
Mm-hmm.
00:18:54
Annie P.
It was just so awesome, especially when we went out to dinner that night. We met, like, Danielle was there. That was my first time meeting Danielle.
00:19:00
WILD ONEZ
yeah
00:19:00
Danielle
you
00:19:00
Annie P.
And then this random person showed up who also was doing a swim run, and everyone was like, well, come eat dinner with us. Like, what are you doing alone?
00:19:07
Viv
Yeah, totally.
00:19:08
Annie P.
Like, it was so awesome to see. everyone was just so helpful, too. Like, I didn't have any gear, okay? So everyone was like, here's a paddle, here's a wetsuit, here's this, here's this.
00:19:19
Annie P.
And then... Another fun thing, I have to tell people, it was so funny, like, what was that on Saturday when we went to do, like, that practice swim where you could just, like, yeah.
00:19:30
WILD ONEZ
The shakeout.
00:19:30
Viv
Oh, like a little shake out.
00:19:31
WILD ONEZ
yeah
00:19:32
Viv
Like you do try things out, see what works for you, tell your links, all that stuff.
00:19:33
Annie P.
Yes.
00:19:35
Annie P.
Yes.
00:19:37
WILD ONEZ
Heather for the first time.
00:19:38
Annie P.
That, yeah, that was awesome because what I didn't realize though, like I said, zero swimming experience, like i would go to a lake and swim and I was like, yeah, i feel okay.
00:19:48
Annie P.
But then Kate's like, do you want some pointers? And I was like, yeah.
00:19:52
Viv
Yeah,
00:19:53
Annie P.
And then
00:19:54
WILD ONEZ
Kate's a good swimmer.
00:19:55
Viv
she's a beast.
00:19:55
WILD ONEZ
That's how I feel too.
00:19:56
Annie P.
yeah, she's a good swimmer.
00:19:57
Viv
yeah be
00:19:58
Annie P.
I was like, holy crap. But then she was like, Hey, Marcus, could you come over here for a few minutes and like help her out?
00:20:01
Viv
He
00:20:05
Annie P.
And then it was like 15 minutes of Marcus, like showing me how to swim. And then when he like walked off, he was like, i don't think you realize how awesome that was. Like, you don't just get that one-on-one coaching all the time. I was like, Oh my gosh, are you serious? like That's so cool. Like,
00:20:21
WILD ONEZ
Oh, Marcus has a heart of gold. He will help anybody and everybody that is interested in swim run.
00:20:23
Viv
he
00:20:27
WILD ONEZ
Uh, he's Viv and I's coach and he's just, yeah, a wonderful human and.
00:20:31
Annie P.
It was an awesome experience. And I could like everything he said, like I remembered the whole time. And then even on the course, I'm pretty sure he passed us like twice. But he was like, just remember this thing, like just remember this thing.
00:20:43
Annie P.
And he was like, when you're swimming, like just remember one thing at a time. And I did. And it helped tremendously. So all the advice, too, is just like top tier.
00:20:50
Viv
Oh, that's incredible.
00:20:50
Annie P.
Yeah.
00:20:53
Viv
I love hearing that.
00:20:54
Annie P.
yeah
00:20:54
WILD ONEZ
Thank you.
00:20:55
Viv
That's like, I think my heart melt. Like talking to you guys, like, I mean, you guys are coming in from totally different backgrounds. Like Danielle, you have a background in swimming, Annie have a background in sports, but also like a completely different sport.
00:21:06
Annie P.
Thank
00:21:08
Viv
You did too. Like, it's a completely different discipline than swimming and running. You still have to, again, have that fitness level of swimming and running, but like putting it together, doing it for the first time, the equipment is not anything that you would like, I mean, doing it how many times in high school swimming did you swim with a buoy in between your legs and paddles on your hands and do it like a fast set and be like, all right, here we go. And then go put your tennis shoes on.

Female Athletes in Endurance Sports

00:21:31
Danielle
Yeah, yeah, definitely not. Definitely not without the not with the shoes.
00:21:35
Annie P.
yeah
00:21:37
Viv
How did it feel like with swimming and running, I guess, swimming running with the shoes on for you guys? Like, weird? Not weird?
00:21:46
Danielle
Honestly, totally fine. Like, I didn't practice that ahead a time, which is probably ill-advised. And I was, like, kind of like, before, I was, like, it'll be fine because I just, like, didn't really have somewhere that I could get in the water with shoes on. Like, I didn't think the gym's pool would be thrilled about that, so I just didn't.
00:22:05
Danielle
And then, like, the couple of days of the yearning.
00:22:05
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:22:05
Viv
They probably would have looked at us a little weird. It's fine. I
00:22:08
Danielle
i Well, okay, actually, I will say before at the Wednesday Run Club before i brought a five gallon bucket of water in my car.
00:22:17
Viv
didn't know that!
00:22:17
Danielle
I drove with it full of water, seat belted in the passenger seat.
00:22:18
Viv
Oh my god, stop!
00:22:19
Annie P.
That's hilarious.
00:22:24
Danielle
and And I like dunked my feet and then went for the run. Because I was like, it'll be fine. It'll be fine. And then, of course, like the Wednesday before I'm like, it's not fine. I need to try it.
00:22:36
Danielle
Totally fine. Like, I did not think about it once during the race.
00:22:38
Annie P.
in.
00:22:41
Danielle
Like, obviously you feel it when you're swimming because you're wearing shoes, but like running with the wet feet was like not even on my radar during the race.
00:22:51
Viv
That's wild.
00:22:51
Danielle
But. good.
00:22:52
Viv
i had no idea about the bucket. That's amazing.
00:22:54
WILD ONEZ
a great story.
00:22:54
Annie P.
you what but
00:22:56
Viv
will i will say the low tide boys might be, they always say, do the bucket test with your shoes if your first time and all that stuff. So you would you're making the boys
00:23:05
Viv
Look, good right now with the bucket test. That's good.
00:23:05
Danielle
good
00:23:07
Danielle
good Yeah.
00:23:09
Viv
Oh, my gosh. Annie, what about you? Did it feel like foreign wearing shoes while you were swimming and running? Okay.
00:23:15
Annie P.
Honestly, no, I'm definitely, so when I go like hiking or running, I'm definitely one of those people that just like, if I see a cool Creek, like I can't stay away. So I'm always, I'm always in the water with my shoes on and it's just kind of like, and I did practice.
00:23:23
WILD ONEZ
Yes.
00:23:29
Annie P.
I went to a state park where there was a lake and some trails and it was Texas. So the trails were like a hundred degrees. So it was like, they dried so quickly for me. but I was very used to it just because I just like to get into stuff.
00:23:44
WILD ONEZ
That's awesome.
00:23:44
Annie P.
Like Danielle says, it just you don't even you don't pay attention to it. you're just Your mind's elsewhere, you know?
00:23:49
Danielle
Yeah.
00:23:50
WILD ONEZ
Yeah, there is...
00:23:50
Danielle
There's other things to think about.
00:23:52
WILD ONEZ
I love her things that go That's awesome.
00:23:52
Annie P.
yeah
00:23:57
Viv
I love that for you guys.
00:23:57
WILD ONEZ
that's awesome
00:23:59
Viv
That's incredible. What, what, I, asked you guys both grew up in in different, again, different backgrounds, which has made you guys absolutely incredible humans and incredible athletes.
00:24:12
Viv
as female athletes, I mean, our entire podcast is highlighting female endurance baddies, like, and you guys are female endurance baddies. Like, I'm just letting you know.
00:24:20
Danielle
Thank you.
00:24:22
Viv
What did you guys, you guys, hit any barriers either growing up now or even in swim run or endurance sports have you guys hit any barriers or misconceptions about endurance athletics or even in your own sports you did too swimming a female athlete and have you guys kind of like pushed past that or have you guys even run into those because i know it's it's different for everybody depending on how we grow up
00:24:49
Danielle
I mean, i think the positive of most swimming and running environments is that boys and girls are usually mixed from the beginning, like as soon as you start. And like, yes, in high school, you like compete separately, but like in the year round team, you're competing together.
00:25:09
Danielle
and I feel like that fosters a pretty good respect for the female athletes because you're
00:25:09
Viv
Mm-hmm.
00:25:17
Danielle
I mean, you're just like have been tied together with the boys team that it's like they understand that you have everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and like it's not like one gender against the other.
00:25:28
Viv
Yeah.
00:25:30
Danielle
So i i do really respect that about endurance sports. Like i i think it's a good community in that sense. I don't know. I'm trying to think of like difficulties or preconception. I mean, like.
00:25:45
WILD ONEZ
It's great that it's hard to think about.
00:25:48
Danielle
I know. I mean, of course there's, like, frustrations about safety when you're training as a female.
00:25:49
WILD ONEZ
It
00:25:50
Annie P.
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:25:54
Danielle
Like, that just, like, is never really going to be equal. Like, I would love, like, you see the boys go run at at night or, and like, early in the morning when it's dark. It's just, like, not it's not quite the same.
00:26:07
Danielle
Or, like, how many runs have you cut short because, like, something's gone wrong
00:26:11
Viv
yeah

Swimrun vs. Triathlon: Community and Inclusiveness

00:26:12
Danielle
and you felt unsafe?
00:26:12
WILD ONEZ
just feels awesome.
00:26:14
Danielle
And and so, like, that, of course, is frustrating.
00:26:14
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:26:16
Danielle
But
00:26:19
Danielle
Wow. Annie, do you have something more?
00:26:24
Annie P.
Well, for me, you know, there's a quote that Isaac Newton says, and it just relates to me so much. We talk about like women in sports and it's, if, if I can see further, it's because I stand on the shoulder of giants.
00:26:35
Annie P.
And I just think that's like the women who've come before me. Like, I don't know if I could do this without them. You know what I mean? Especially like when I started jujitsu, like there was, you know, we're in a small town, it's a small gym, but there were still a couple of women there. And it's like,
00:26:52
Annie P.
They're my giants. Like I was able to like be where I am now because they looked out for me and they were a resource for me. And I know not everyone has that. So it makes me super sad. But it's just one of those things that you you do learn to deal with, like, especially in jujitsu, it's a very male dominated sport.
00:27:09
Annie P.
So you just have to learn to stand up for yourself and know that there are people out there willing to look out for you and be in your corner. And i mean, guys too, like there's always...
00:27:21
Annie P.
you know, and in jujitsu, there's always a couple people that drive you nuts, which you can go to your guy friend and say, hey, like, go beat them up, please, like, and it, and they'll do that for you, and so, so maybe, yeah, I'm just, I, no, I, I sound, I sound a lot cooler than I am, but just while I'm talking, but, well, thank you for the support, but,
00:27:28
Danielle
Thank
00:27:28
Viv
It's a perk, for sure.
00:27:35
WILD ONEZ
Nobody knows Danny. the
00:27:41
Viv
Thank you.
00:27:44
Annie P.
and i just I think maybe growing up with two brothers helped. i don't know. and i I started in the field of horticulture, which is also super male-dominated.
00:27:49
WILD ONEZ
she
00:27:54
Annie P.
You just learn to stick up for yourself. and You just find like men and women alike who you know like you for you and you can just have that authentic relationship with. and Those end up just being the people in your corner.
00:28:06
Annie P.
And I think it's the people too, especially in sports where it's like, we all know we need to like drive to do better and push ourselves. And once you find that like-minded community that sticks with you, right?
00:28:20
Viv
Absolutely.
00:28:20
Danielle
Yes.
00:28:20
Viv
I mean, that's why Sarah and I are still in it too. Like, I mean, we were, we're still here because we have incredible female athletes in front of us. I mean, there's, there's, we're getting a huge, I mean, influence to female athletes, like you guys coming in, like the next generation of swim run. Like, I mean, there's people who done one race, there's people have done 5 trillion races, but I think women in general, like, I mean, not to plug wild, but to plug wild, like they have,
00:28:49
Viv
their Their mission is to get more females into swimrun and more females into endurance sports and know that it's not as intimidating. Were there any intimidation factors for you guys, like, coming into swimrun where you're like, ooh, maybe I'm not kind of like, Annie, you highlighted it a little bit before, like, not feeling like you were, like, there and then, like, immediately getting, like, that feeling, like, washed away. But were there any, like, did you guys feel, like, intimidated by the sport? Did you feel intimidated signing up for the race?
00:29:19
Viv
be involved in something like this?
00:29:22
Danielle
Yeah, I think for me, i was i was definitely intimidated by the like, trail aspect of that and the swimming outdoors. And especially, like, where we live, you can't really swim outside by yourself, especially.
00:29:38
Annie P.
Mm-hmm.
00:29:40
Viv
I don't trust gators.
00:29:40
Danielle
on count of alligators.
00:29:41
Viv
yeah
00:29:43
WILD ONEZ
You did.
00:29:45
Danielle
So like it was kind of intimidating signing up and not knowing how I would, like I just knew I wouldn't be able to replicate the race well at all.
00:29:57
Danielle
And like I'd never really done trail runs. Where we live is very flat. And Austin really didn't end up being that hilly, but I wasn't, like, I just didn't know what to expect and, like, how to train for that.
00:30:10
Danielle
So there was definitely intimidation there. And then also, i had the same moment of Annie when I walked, when I, like, got to the race, and I was like, oh, my gosh, everyone is so fit.
00:30:21
Danielle
Like, I'm like, yeah.
00:30:22
Annie P.
Oh.
00:30:24
Danielle
it was It was intimidating to, like, i was like, did I make a mistake? Like, am I not going to be able to keep up with anyone? Like, and that's that's fine. Like, I knew I'd be at the tail end of the race when I signed up, and I was fine with that. But I was like, am I going to be a hindrance? Like, am I going to be packing up?
00:30:43
Danielle
I'm still out there. But like what Annie said, like, everyone was so nice and so supportive and, like, no one was acting like there was like, I don't want to say clicks, but like, it didn't feel like everyone felt just as excited to have me there as to have someone super fast there. And it like was just welcoming and encouraging.
00:31:09
Danielle
And by the time I race started, I was like okay, it's okay. If I'm way behind everyone, they'll still be kind and won't be packing up on me. Yeah.
00:31:20
WILD ONEZ
So was your...
00:31:20
Viv
until until marcus like passed all of us up and humbled every single one of us after he waited 15 minutes to start the run everybody's like oh yeah sorry good job guys good job and i'm like you too marcus you too i'm like i don't run
00:31:24
WILD ONEZ
Oh.
00:31:25
Danielle
Yes.
00:31:28
WILD ONEZ
Yeah. okay
00:31:34
WILD ONEZ
I love swimming that you get like the entire spectrum of athletes though like you really do get the people who have really high ambitions to podium for every single race which is amazing and then you also have the folks that are out there just to have a good time and cross that finish line no matter when that is. And I love swim run for that. Danielle, you said you had a little bit of experience with triathlon as well and your history. What was that introduction like for you in comparison, like triathlon, like your first triathlon experience into now your first swim run experience?
00:32:15
Danielle
Okay. So my first triathlon, I was in seventh grade, I think, which it was my youth.
00:32:21
WILD ONEZ
Oh.
00:32:22
Annie P.
Wow. Awesome.
00:32:23
Danielle
yeah My like friend's dad did Ironman, so he like started a youth triathlon club, which was so fun and so cool.
00:32:29
WILD ONEZ
OK.
00:32:29
Viv
I thought
00:32:32
Danielle
And also at that age, like yes, like I'm sure i was a kind of nervous, but it is just different when you're 12. Yeah. twelve yeah
00:32:41
Viv
that.
00:32:44
Danielle
Like, I don't, I think I was just like way more, i don't know. You're not comparing yourself as much. You're 12 years old. I probably was in better shape when I was 12 years old. So like
00:32:54
WILD ONEZ
Thank you.
00:32:54
Danielle
i
00:32:54
Annie P.
Bye.
00:32:56
Danielle
like, that was, but I do think that set me up for like, as I got older, i did start, i did like one adult triathlon when I was 16 probably is when the youth ends.
00:33:09
Viv
Mm-hmm.
00:33:10
Danielle
And I remember like that feeling of intimidation where I was still riding like my mom's bike that when I wasn't racing had a basket on the front. Like it was not it was not a road bike by any means.
00:33:23
Danielle
And showing up and seeing all these guys with like carbon fiber tires and like the speed helmets. that I don't even know what they're called. Like just like totally out of my element.
00:33:34
Danielle
And then kind of learning to like, okay, that's fine. Like I can still hold my own. Like I still have my strong suits. Also, like I'm just here to do a race and have fun. Like I don't need to be intimidated by what other people are doing.
00:33:47
Viv
Yeah.
00:33:47
Danielle
So I think, like, learning to be okay with that has definitely translated, like, now as an adult when you show up and you feel like, whoa, everyone knows what they're doing.
00:33:47
WILD ONEZ
That's great.
00:33:56
Danielle
Everyone's really fit. Everyone, like, has all their equipment together. And I am, like, scrambling the day before taking equipment from you guys, really. But just, like, being okay with, like, I'm here to do this race for me. And, like, I don't need to show up and be intimidated by other people because, like, who cares? Like, they're not.
00:34:17
WILD ONEZ
That's such a great mindset.
00:34:18
Danielle
No one's worried.
00:34:18
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:34:20
Viv
to reach it, girl. Preach.
00:34:21
Annie P.
That's awesome.
00:34:22
Viv
Yeah.
00:34:22
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:34:22
Danielle
just
00:34:22
Annie P.
Yeah.
00:34:24
Viv
No, I think that that's, like, it's so important because I think it's so easy to get caught up in, like, just like you said, like, when you were 16, you're like, oh, my gosh, they have all this, like, really fancy equipment. Like, am I going to be able to, like, still be, like, fast? Am I still be able to do everything? And I don't think you can have the best equipment in the world. You can have the crappiest equipment in the world. I think it's just, like,
00:34:48
Viv
just like you said, like your attitude of, Hey, no, I can do this. I can hold my own. And i am like a badass. Like i I did do this. Like I am incredible for showing up here.
00:34:58
Viv
And I think that like, you definitely carry that attitude of like, I can do this, watch me kind of thing. Like, and I
00:35:07
Danielle
You should.
00:35:07
Annie P.
Yeah, take up space.

Race Reflections and Strategies

00:35:10
Viv
literally like it just, it,
00:35:10
Annie P.
Woo.
00:35:13
Viv
And, like, Annie, you, too, like, just the fact that, like, you, like, you guys said earlier, you guys like a challenge. And by you guys even showing up to swimrun, like, it's a wild sport to even think about. Like, I mean, Danielle has been there when I, like, explained it to, like, our run club. And they're like, wait, but, yeah, but, like, I know you run and swim and your shoes on, but, like, what do you do with everything else?
00:35:34
Viv
Like, put it on your head.
00:35:36
WILD ONEZ
It does cause a lot of for people.
00:35:37
Viv
Like, yeah.
00:35:38
Danielle
yeah
00:35:40
Annie P.
you carry it
00:35:41
WILD ONEZ
So, okay, this is this is a good question for you guys. So... Obviously, coming into swimrun as newcomers and swimrun Austin was your first race, you probably had maybe some sort of an idea of what the race would be like and what like transitions would be like, what it would be like running and then swimming and then running and then swimming and then running and then swimming again, like what that impact might have on the body. And so your thoughts coming into the race and then actually getting started with the race and finishing the race, were there things that changed for you?
00:36:15
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:36:17
Viv
Yeah, Annie, what you got?
00:36:18
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:36:20
Annie P.
Well, for me, i was like, you know, shout out to Kate. She really guided me through just anything that along on the course, like she really just guided me like so well.
00:36:30
Annie P.
And she's just like, I don't know. She's just like blunt and to the point. And I love it. I just like, i I love her.
00:36:35
WILD ONEZ
Thank you.
00:36:36
Viv
Oh, yeah.
00:36:37
Annie P.
She was just like the kind of gal I needed in my life. But it was like, for me, my breathing, like I practiced swimming and running and swimming and running again. But once I like got to the course, I just found myself like not being able to breathe while I was swimming. And then that just like, I don't know why if it was like nerves or just like excitement or because I was just like thinking too much, but it was like, it really started to like affect the entire race just because I couldn't, I couldn't breathe, you know, just usual stuff. And I was like, what? Like, this is so silly. like i should be ready. Yeah.
00:37:14
WILD ONEZ
That's fair though. Honestly, like open water swimming can be a really scary, terrifying thing. When I am swimming, sometimes like the first section of a race, my body is also like, what the heck are you doing? Why is your heart rate so high? I'm breathing every two strokes because i don't know what I'm doing. And this is like, yeah, like it's definitely a thing that swim runners experience. Was there a way for you to...
00:37:41
WILD ONEZ
kind of like control that throughout the race? Or what was your experience like after you noticed what was going on?
00:37:48
Annie P.
Well, so actually, you know, when I told you that Marcus kind of helped Kate and I give me some pointers, that that was a piece of advice he gave me. i'm pretty sure he foresaw that happening.
00:37:59
Annie P.
and And Kate was reminding me of it, too, like,
00:38:00
Viv
Yeah.
00:38:03
Annie P.
What he said, you know, he gave me a bunch of different tips and tricks and he's like, just focus on one of those the entire time. And I was like, okay, so maybe this time I'll really focus on like getting my arms super extended or like raising my elbow high or like just my breathing.
00:38:18
Annie P.
Just so like every different length of the of the swimming. it was just one thing at a time. then so i was, because of that, like focus, I was really, i don't know, just help, help get through it. And then we stopped when I needed to stop. And so goes, goes back to having that good partner. And so they will get through it.
00:38:38
WILD ONEZ
Awesome.
00:38:40
Danielle
I mean, the the transitions definitely was, i did not practice beforehand. i just, i I mean, it's kind of hard when you don't have like the wetsuit with you because it's like, I don't really know where I'm going to put all this because i don't, I rent for, I rented a wetsuit and then ended up using, actually don't even remember who's, what, one of your guys' wetsuits, but that's it is.
00:39:02
Annie P.
I love that.
00:39:07
Danielle
but it was kind of like, okay, like I'll carry this stuff. And I was like, I don't know where it's going to be on my body. And like, I had paddles that I didn't end up using for the race because the Saturday shakeout, thank goodness for that. Because I cannot imagine going into that race without doing the shakeout.
00:39:25
Danielle
Like Viv ended up giving me a pair of her paddles because my situation was not working. It was too, too clunky. and like, just like practicing what order i was going to like,
00:39:37
Danielle
put like take my swim cap off take my or put my goggles on put my po' boy in like practicing I definitely could have done more of that at home regardless of the pocket situation
00:39:50
WILD ONEZ
In your shower.
00:39:51
Danielle
So like kind of getting in the rhythm of that, like trying practice it Saturday, like practiced it more the night before. during the race, like I got more confident in like what I was doing when I needed to take my swim cap and goggles off, like when I could leave it on in between segments. And yeah, just like another like in the race moment for me was realizing that within this race like i was a better runner than a swimmer which i wasn't really expecting i think if you've like done triathlons and you have a swim background it's like oh yeah like i'm like i know i'm like not as good as swimming as i used to be but i'm still good at swimming but then when you do swim run i just think more people have a swimming background that
00:40:36
Annie P.
Hmm.
00:40:40
Danielle
are doing swim like i think there's a lot of people in triathlon who like don't really like the swimming at all but do it because they like the rest of it swim more and people like the swimming so like kind of adjusting mid-race and realizing like okay i should actually push the runs harder and like that's when i'm gonna like not that i was like being really competitive during the race but i was like that's when i could pass people if i want and like and like realizing that like okay on the swim like i like I need to like just like calm down, like keep my heart rate from like, but like I don't need to try and keep up with everyone doing the swim.
00:41:15
Danielle
i can do my own thing.
00:41:17
WILD ONEZ
It sounds like you found a really good flow.
00:41:21
Danielle
Yes, yeah.
00:41:22
WILD ONEZ
a What did that like? What like, do you remember when all of that likes kind of started clicking for you?
00:41:31
Danielle
Well, the okay, so the first swim, I, like, did have a little moment of panic because everyone was just getting further away, and I was, like, oh, my gosh, like, I'm going to get left out here. and i was so And I was anticipating, like, being slower in the run, so i was like I was, like, afraid every segment I would, like, fall further behind, which, again, is fine. Like, it would have been okay. and so like the first swim i did kind of get a little bit stressed and panicky and i'm just like by the like doing the run after that first swim i like kind of had a little talk with myself where i was like okay i need to just and like i need to calm down i can't like there's no point in me getting stressed during this one because like i can't it's not going to make anything better i'm just going to get my heart rate out for
00:42:15
WILD ONEZ
Mm-hmm.
00:42:19
Danielle
no reason so yeah I think that second run was when I like had a like I need to get I need to get it together the race isn't gonna be like pay like paced the way I was expecting but it was totally fine the way it was and yeah had fun and the swim the open water swim like If you don't get to open water swim often, it is like intimidating that first length, but you get you get in the rhythm of it, and it's it's fun to look up and see all these cliffs around you instead of a pool. Yeah.
00:42:51
WILD ONEZ
water was so warm this year too like it was fantastic like I yeah was not expecting that and the day before when we did the the shakeout I got in the water and I was like ooh this kind of feels like bath water it's a little like swimrun yeah swimrun Austin's a good one if you want to swim in warm water
00:42:55
Danielle
Yeah.
00:43:21
Danielle
Yeah. Yeah, that was.
00:43:23
Annie P.
I had to stop a bunch during that last swim, so thank goodness for the pole buoys, because I was just like, okay, like I can't. it was wild. was great.
00:43:35
WILD ONEZ
I actually really love that about having the big pole buoys and then you have your wetsuit. And like, if you tired in the middle of a swim and you're just out there having fun and having a good time, like, yeah, you can totally sit upright, in the view, catch your breath and yeah, just enjoy the scenery around you and realize what you're doing is a really bad-ass thing and you should be proud. Yeah.

Unexpected Moments and Future Plans

00:44:05
Annie P.
I don't know. Those pull buoys are just awesome. The fact that I could stop when I needed to stop was, I was like, wow, I had no idea. Like it just, I didn't know it was going to like keep me afloat. Like I just thought it was just kind of like there to like lift your legs a little. And i was like, oh, I couldn't, I couldn't catch my breath. Yeah.
00:44:23
WILD ONEZ
he
00:44:24
Danielle
Yeah, that was fun. Like, there was a couple times was like, I need to clear my gut. I wasn't like flipping over. I felt like a little otter floating in the water.
00:44:33
Annie P.
yeah is so cute right
00:44:34
WILD ONEZ
Okay,
00:44:34
Danielle
On my back.
00:44:38
Danielle
Yeah.
00:44:38
WILD ONEZ
that brings back memories from Swim Run North Carolina floating down the river.
00:44:53
WILD ONEZ
You do kind of feel like an otter.
00:44:57
Annie P.
That sounds so fun.
00:45:10
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:45:21
Annie P.
That is so cute!
00:45:26
Annie P.
Aw, that's so sweet.
00:45:27
Danielle
Yeah.
00:45:27
Annie P.
That's we should have done for swim, Rhett. I'll just...
00:45:30
WILD ONEZ
Can't you float with otters? i keep seeing like ads on Instagram or something where you can like be in like thermal waterproof suits, float on your back with like otters.
00:45:42
WILD ONEZ
it could It could be AI. I don't know. It probably is, but it looks fun.
00:45:46
Danielle
like
00:45:46
Annie P.
I'll find out.
00:45:49
Annie P.
Yeah, this is a thing.
00:45:51
WILD ONEZ
Is it?
00:45:51
Annie P.
There's some in Texas. Yeah.
00:45:53
WILD ONEZ
No. What? Texas?
00:45:55
Annie P.
Yeah. Yeah.
00:45:57
WILD ONEZ
What?
00:46:03
Danielle
Yeah.
00:46:03
Annie P.
Yes. Yeah. Yes. Seriously. There's a couple ranches where you can swim with otters. I mean, I don't know the details. I'm just looking right here, but it's a thing. How cool.
00:46:14
WILD ONEZ
huh well you probably don't need the the thick thermal suits in texas
00:46:29
WILD ONEZ
Awesome. So what are your guys' thoughts about signing up for another swim run? Danielle, maybe partnering in a swim with somebody for a swim run? do you have anything on your radar?
00:46:45
WILD ONEZ
Now that you've experienced it, what's next?
00:46:46
Danielle
Yes. So during the race, I was already thinking like, I'm gonna need to buy a wetsuit. Like this is so much fun. And I did it afterwards.
00:47:00
Danielle
Like during the, you know, like during the race, I feel like I usually am like, why am I doing this? Why did I sign up? Like what? Like not doing swimwear the whole time. I was just like, I can't wait to tell people about this. This is so much fun. I'm going to buy a wetsuit. Like I like i was like making making plans for the future when I was doing the race.
00:47:21
Danielle
So I definitely, my intention is to do Austin next year again.
00:47:26
WILD ONEZ
Yay!
00:47:27
Danielle
And I have convinced someone of being my partner. Joni, if you're listening.
00:47:32
WILD ONEZ
Yay! Yes! Yes! okay
00:47:37
Danielle
yeah I'm hoping i mean it'd be so fun if we have like a bunch of people come do it of course but and I think like doing it with a partner even like before the race i was like yeah that probably is so much fun and like I know I could have i think I just like I felt like there were so many things I didn't know about the sport already and like I just like didn't know what my times would be at all.
00:48:02
Danielle
so I think that made me intimidated to sign up with a partner. I don't know if that's really valid, but that's just where my mind was at But I'm really excited to with a partner next year. It looks like a lot of fun.
00:48:14
WILD ONEZ
It is so fun. Annie, what are what are your thoughts on swim run?
00:48:22
Annie P.
I would love to do it again. i think I'm like traveling a lot this year. I'd like to do Austin again. i had, like honestly, last year, I had like a tough year with them like moving down to Texas and everything. So it was just like,
00:48:34
Annie P.
I don't know. That just perked me right up having that in November. i think it was it was November. Yeah. So I would just love do it again this November. i just want, I really want to do it. I wish I could do more, but I'm just like, don't know if I can. Like I'm going everywhere all over the place this year. it's It's crazy.
00:48:52
Annie P.
it's like a wedding year, you know? So it's like, you're just going, and you know,
00:48:58
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:48:58
Danielle
Sweet.
00:49:20
WILD ONEZ
of the world championship race and so i think as a sport it's still relatively new and yeah like the word of swimrun and the world of swimrun is still growing and expanding which is awesome but it's like yeah this instant connection that you get with somebody if they know anything about swimrun it's amazing
00:49:51
WILD ONEZ
Do you guys have a favorite memory from the race? Like when you think about swim in Austin and the whole experience of it all, what is the memory that pops into your brain that is like the most fun, memorable, what whatever?
00:50:10
Danielle
Okay, I think the, I mean, the jump is just so fun, of course.
00:50:17
Danielle
So that, and then that last length of run, or I guess second to last length of running, when you're like around the finish line and you can hear it, but you still like, you still have your run and your swim and your little, your tiny little run left.
00:50:32
Danielle
I thought that was so fun. And I think the whole thing was downhill too. And like just like hearing the finish line and that excitement and like going downhill and like feeling like you're almost there, that felt like I don't know.
00:50:48
Danielle
And I'm sure I like was not flying down the trail, but I felt like I was flying down the trail.
00:50:52
WILD ONEZ
100%.
00:50:56
Danielle
like It felt like really unstoppable, like kind of easy, cheesy moment.
00:50:59
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:51:01
Danielle
But i really enjoyed that second to last run.
00:51:05
WILD ONEZ
a good runner's high right there.
00:51:07
Danielle
Before I got demolished on this one.
00:51:07
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:51:10
Annie P.
Mm-hmm.
00:51:14
WILD ONEZ
Yeah.
00:51:15
Danielle
I didn' didn't know that was coming.
00:51:17
WILD ONEZ
I'm ready to humble you pretty quickly. From experience.
00:51:26
Annie P.
I love that.
00:51:26
WILD ONEZ
Annie, how about you?
00:51:28
Annie P.
I just, yeah, like like you said, there's so many just like staying with everybody, tons of memories there. i think like during the race, I like needed a break at one point. And so like Kate and I were just walking and talking and just for a hot minute there, I just kind of like forgot we were in a race. And then I was like, wait a minute, probably start running again.
00:51:48
Annie P.
i and I was just like, oh, that's that's nice to be able to just space out like that.
00:51:56
Danielle
Mm-hmm.
00:51:57
WILD ONEZ
Honestly.
00:52:18
Annie P.
awesome. It was just what I needed. but can't wait to do it again.
00:52:23
WILD ONEZ
love that. Woo! So we can confirm they have drunk drink in the Kool-Aid. Yeah.
00:52:32
Annie P.
it' so You guys are awesome. You guys made it all so easy, seriously. like

Growth, Empowerment, and Future Goals

00:52:38
Annie P.
i just You guys made it so seamless.
00:52:43
Danielle
Yes.
00:52:43
Annie P.
Like, thank you for doing everything you did. You guys just made it a fantastic memory.
00:52:49
Danielle
Yeah, I felt very taken care of. felt like I was like the youngest sibling at a... its why everyone that Everyone just takes care of you and tells you what you need to do beforehand.
00:53:01
WILD ONEZ
I think everybody just really wants everyone out there to have a good time and be supported, feel supported, and have the things that they need to race with the you know the proper gear that they need, you know get in the right mindset, give people kudos along the course.
00:53:20
WILD ONEZ
I don't know about y'all, but Viv and I scream at like everybody. and just like cheering them on. And it's, yeah, the energy and the course is unlike anything I've experienced outside of swim run.
00:53:33
WILD ONEZ
And I really hope you guys got to experience like that, the same feeling.
00:53:34
Annie P.
It's awesome.
00:53:39
Annie P.
I absolutely did. It was just, I mean, especially you guys, just women supporting other women and a hard thing. And it was just a fantastic time.
00:53:50
Danielle
Yes, absolutely.
00:53:52
Annie P.
I would say just don't be afraid to reach out like you guys, especially with your wild ones. Like that's an awesome resource. I just encourage people to just reach out and ask the questions, ask the stupid questions. They're not stupid.
00:54:03
Annie P.
and just like trust yourself, trust the process.
00:54:04
WILD ONEZ
Amen. I love them.
00:54:06
Annie P.
And like, honestly, just, just do it. Like you'll, you won't regret it. You never do. Like you, if you're in a bad mood, you never regret a good workout. Right. So it's just like, You know, it's just like this, like you never regret doing this cool thing. Like there's so many resources out there. just really don't be afraid to reach out and do it.
00:54:27
Danielle
Yeah, I think when you sign up for something like an athletic race or whatever it is, even if you pushing yourself past like what you think would be a normal thing to do...
00:54:44
Danielle
Like, it just falls into place once you're there. Like, once you're in the race, like, things work out. Even if you do something silly or, like, wrong that you wouldn't want to repeat in the future, like, it's still fine. Like, I don't I don't feel like I've like, I've definitely signed up for stuff that, like, maybe Some people would say I shouldn't have yet.
00:55:05
Danielle
it But like, it's never, I've never regretted it. Even when I look back and I was like yeah, I wasn't really ready for that. Like that was painful and the moment. Like it's always been fine.
00:55:16
Danielle
things Things fall into place once you're there and people are wanting you and yeah, ask for help. trust Trust yourself that you'll be able to train and get ready and and it'll be okay. And you can laugh at it if it wasn't okay.
00:55:32
Danielle
if
00:55:33
Annie P.
I love that, Dania.
00:55:35
WILD ONEZ
Yeah, I really think swim run is a sport for everybody too, especially and that they do have different distances for people to experience.
00:55:41
Danielle
Mm-hmm.
00:55:46
WILD ONEZ
I think, yeah, that's great advice and jumping right in and signing up and doing the hard thing. It can be one of the most rewarding things in the end.
00:56:00
WILD ONEZ
And like, it truly sounds like that was your guys' experience with swim run. Like not really sure what we're getting into here, but we know it's going to be hard. We know we're going to have a good time out there.
00:56:15
WILD ONEZ
And you come out on the other end of it and it's just like a rewarding thing. and from my personal experience, I feel like after our first race, like it was just such a huge moment of growth for myself personally. And like also in my athletic career, cause i signed up,
00:56:34
WILD ONEZ
not knowing anything about swimrun, not being a swimmer even. i swam for a year in middle school and I don't think that really counts in your adult life.
00:56:49
WILD ONEZ
It's just, I feel like your swimrun experience can be like such a transformative like moment in life.
00:56:49
Annie P.
Aww.
00:56:56
WILD ONEZ
And that's what it was for me personally. And I guess you guys inspired me to share that with your stories. So thank you.
00:57:06
Annie P.
Oh, Sarah. yeah Oh, you're great. too, Viv and Danielle. Y'all are so awesome. My heart's so full.
00:57:15
WILD ONEZ
Seriously.
00:57:26
Danielle
Yeah, I mean, i think doing races like this just proves, like, if something sounds fun to you, e can just sign up and, like, figure out the details later.
00:57:36
Annie P.
Thank you.
00:57:39
Danielle
it's worth just giving it a go. Like, if it seems like a cool concept, you know, I mean, of course you and like need to train. You don't want to hurt yourself, but... I think that most races you can do some level of it at where you're at or, you know, where you think you could be by the time the race happens.
00:58:00
Danielle
And just sign up. It's fun. Yeah. And I think every race I do like that just proves it more, like gives me more confidence that I can continue pushing in that direction.
00:58:14
Annie P.
I would love to do a trail run and I really want to compete in jujitsu this year as well. So see where all that or all that leads.
00:58:21
Annie P.
I just think I've never really been in like a competition before, like even swim run. That was like my first race competition thing. And so that was just, that was great. I would love to do that again.
00:58:32
Annie P.
Like even if it was like a trail run or something, you know?
00:58:36
Annie P.
Yeah, and so it's so it's kind of like your belt levels. So there's like white, blue, purple, brown, black. and then And then you go by weight. So... you know I'd be a blue belt and whatever weight I'm at. And then, you know, it's just you want, especially there's not a lot of, there's a lot more women in the sport now, but it's like, you obviously go against the girl. So you want to go to like bigger cities and Texas is like a jujitsu hub. So while I'm here, I need to make the most of it.
00:59:04
WILD ONEZ
Really?
00:59:04
Annie P.
And so you just, yeah, you just sign up and you need to make your weight, of course. And then You can do, you know, with the gi, which is like the, you know, like the jacket that you'd like see them wear. Or you can do no gi, which is like just normal workout clothes kind of with your rash guard. And so there's, yeah, there's different elements to it. I think it'd be super fun.
00:59:27
WILD ONEZ
That's awesome. That can definitely bring you a lot of cool places. Yeah. You have to keep us updated.
00:59:34
Annie P.
Thanks, guys. I will, I will.
00:59:37
WILD ONEZ
Thank
00:59:37
Annie P.
Now that I've spoken into the universe, it'll happen. Cool.
00:59:43
Danielle
So I signed up for the Brooklyn half. I'm doing it with my brother.
00:59:51
Danielle
I'm really excited. Yeah, it'll be fun to do My brother's in New York City, so I'm excited to go see him and run that. And then Louisiana Summer Nights. I'm excited to I think this year I'll be planning on going in a little more train for running a longer distance. Last time I think the longest I'd ever ran was 13 miles. Like I had done one half marathon, had not done it again in training and then showed up and I was like, all right, time to run 27. Not great.
01:00:22
WILD ONEZ
That's incredible.
01:00:26
WILD ONEZ
Congratulations. You literally just like doubled that. Actually more than that.
01:00:34
Annie P.
Yeah,

Conclusion and Gratitude

01:00:51
WILD ONEZ
it's too
01:00:58
Annie P.
I feel the same about you all. And, you know, Sarah Viv, thank you for giving us this safe place to talk about this all. I think it's really important, like you said, for women in sports, it's just women just doing stuff. It's really important to have that safe space to talk about it and people to reach out to. So thank you guys.
01:01:17
Danielle
Yes, thank you guys for supporting us and others. And it's it's been fun to be here.
01:01:27
Annie P.
I know im I'm so giddy right now. I just like.
01:01:31
WILD ONEZ
Oh, well, that's amazing. Yeah, I'll say thank you again for joining on this episode of The Wild Ones. um And we'll see y'all next time on the podcast. Love y'all. Bye.
01:01:44
Annie P.

01:01:44
Danielle

01:01:45
Annie P.
