Introduction & Daylight Savings Debate

00:00:00
Chris
gotta hit start welcome back to another episode of the mythic giraffe podcast i'm chris i don't know that's
00:00:06
whattimeisit
The music never went. What is that? And I'm Ron and I don't know what time it is.
00:00:12
Chris
the thing it's daylight savings we're all thrown off cats and dogs living together it is yeah
00:00:18
whattimeisit
anarchy. It's so dumb. can we Which one do we need to get rid of to make it better?
00:00:26
Chris
i just leave it as it is now i guess i don't know
00:00:28
whattimeisit
Right, is it this one we keep? We don't keep the one other one, right? We keep this one.
00:00:32
Chris
I think, I don't know.
00:00:33
whattimeisit
This is the end of Daylight Savings, right? Not the beginning.
00:00:35
Chris
yeah This is daylight saving ending.
00:00:37
whattimeisit
Right, so let's just call it.
00:00:39
Chris
Yeah. It's ended. It's done.
00:00:42
whattimeisit
Time of death, debbra or eleven October October.
00:00:43
Chris
Yeah.
00:00:46
whattimeisit
November the 2nd, 2025.
00:00:48
Chris
Yeah.
00:00:48
whattimeisit
but It also feels like it's early this year.
00:00:51
Chris
Yeah.
00:00:53
whattimeisit
usually feel like it's in the middle of November.
00:00:56
Chris
I see. I felt like it was I thought it was usually in like October. I don't know. It's probably some stupid thing that it's like, oh, when does the, you know, sun pass by a waning gibbous? And don't know.
00:01:12
whattimeisit
And I'm sure B-shift is submitting their extra time as we speak. Good
00:01:17
Chris
Oh, yeah, that's. Yeah, I that killed me.
00:01:19
whattimeisit
old B-shift.
00:01:20
Chris
They used to.
00:01:23
Chris
Yeah.
00:01:24
whattimeisit
But don't take the time when they get a short shift.
00:01:24
Chris
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:01:28
whattimeisit
Yeah, they earn that
00:01:29
Chris
yeah
00:01:32
Chris
It's and then you've got what would we talk that there's like four states that don't use daylight savings and.
00:01:33
whattimeisit
time.
00:01:37
whattimeisit
Yeah, there's... And there's countries that don't do it. Just get rid of it.
00:01:40
Chris
Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:01:41
whattimeisit
It's a nightmare. it's We bitch about it perennially. It's time to be done with it.
00:01:47
Chris
Yeah.
00:01:50
whattimeisit
Maybe it made sense at one point 1774 or whenever Franklin proposed it, but we got digital clocks now.
00:01:54
Chris
Right. Yeah.
00:01:59
Chris
Yeah. It's yeah. Yeah, but I like the rationale. Industrialized societies usually follow a clock-based schedule for daily activities that do not change throughout the course of the year.
00:02:14
Chris
yeah remi Yeah, but who cares? There's lights now.
00:02:18
whattimeisit
ah sir
00:02:18
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. We are no longer covered by solar time because as we've proven, time is nothing.
00:02:25
whattimeisit
Time is just a construct. We're all living in a simulation anyways.
00:02:29
Chris
Hmm.
00:02:30
whattimeisit
And simulation is breaking.
00:02:32
Chris
Yeah, yeah.
00:02:33
whattimeisit
As we speak.
00:02:33
Chris
Oh my god. Yeah. All right.

Gaming & DIY Stories

00:02:40
whattimeisit
So, playing any new games? Anything fun?
00:02:43
Chris
Yeah, started playing a Ghost of Yote.
00:02:46
whattimeisit
Sounds like a Slasher. What are those games called?
00:02:52
Chris
Hack and slash, kind of?
00:02:53
whattimeisit
Ah, the Dark Souls.
00:02:54
Chris
No?
00:02:55
whattimeisit
Souls...
00:02:55
Chris
Oh, no, not really. No, it's not Souls-like. It's the...
00:03:00
Chris
it's the It's not a sequel, but it's like the same vein as they had Ghost of Tsushima five years ago, four years ago. Yeah. You're a Ronin, your family was murdered and it's you getting the um a backing or whatever to take down the six crime Lords that killed your family.
00:03:21
Chris
Very like, like there's a map. But you know a lot of games, you'll ping a place on a map, and then there's like something glowing or whatever. In this, the wind blows in that direction to guide you.
00:03:33
Chris
And yeah, there's a lot of like environmental cues that tell you things.
00:03:35
whattimeisit
The wind! The wind! It's
00:03:38
Chris
And yeah, it's pretty neat. You can do like a standoff, like an old samurai movie and stuff. Yeah.
00:03:46
whattimeisit
fun.
00:03:46
Chris
Yeah. It's neat. How about you?
00:03:48
whattimeisit
Um, Planet Crystal.
00:03:54
whattimeisit
Yeah. Making my way through the DLC. It's a lot.
00:04:00
Chris
Yeah. Have you figured out the ah water supply issues?
00:04:03
whattimeisit
Oh.
00:04:03
Chris
and
00:04:04
whattimeisit
Oh, my God. I was playing yesterday and my mind was blown. I walked in this guy's house I was like, what the fuck? How did you run the wires like this? Now I have to redo all of my wiring.
00:04:15
whattimeisit
That's the whole thing.
00:04:16
Chris
ah yeah. Make sure it's up to code.
00:04:18
whattimeisit
Yeah. I got the inspector in there.
00:04:21
Chris
can you imagine that and i'm sure there's some simulation game that's like that like you you build everything out and then you know the plumbing inspector comes by so you can't do that yeah
00:04:21
whattimeisit
No.
00:04:33
whattimeisit
Well, he wouldn't like my irrigation system, so.
00:04:36
Chris
if it works that's what matters yeah 60 of the time it works 100 of the time
00:04:38
whattimeisit
ah It works about 60% of the time. To be fair. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm having some power supply issues that I've got to figure out, but now I've figured them out.
00:04:51
whattimeisit
So, you know, there's going lot more wire running.
00:04:52
Chris
Yeah. Nice.
00:04:54
whattimeisit
So basically I'm going another entire day and a video game running, rewiring, my video game.
00:05:04
Chris
Well, when you get done this, you'll have the experience. You can rewire your house.
00:05:08
whattimeisit
No, and nana day no, Try that. I'm doing it ever again.
00:05:14
Chris
ha Yeah.
00:05:15
whattimeisit
Nay, nay.
00:05:19
Chris
I, uh, my Jeep's driver side door lock, the power lock was not engaging, just was not locking the door. So you had to get out, use the key to lock it.
00:05:34
Chris
so I was like, okay. So i look and I was like, you know, it it looked like was going to be about between six and $800 to get it fixed. was like, no, there's gotta be an easier fix. I look up things and everything. And I found,
00:05:48
Chris
like The part that's the actual door actuator. And people are like, oh yeah, it happens. Just replace this thing. was like, okay. So look online. Of course, if you get it from Jeep, it's like $300.
00:05:59
Chris
So I was like, yep. So I find one through a reliable parts store. $29, $30. I was like, okay. Comes in the mail.
00:06:09
Chris
and look at it. i'm like, okay. Well, here's where it's got to go. i was like, I probably just take the panel off the door and plug it in. I had to take everything out of the door.
00:06:21
Chris
um I had to disconnect it from every bit of the lock. I had to clamp my window in place so I could remove the window actuator and everything. But at the end, I got it all put back together two hours later and the doors lock.
00:06:36
Chris
So it works.
00:06:38
whattimeisit
I would have just bought a new car
00:06:40
Chris
at all I told my wife, I was like, first I was worried because ah I got the door put back together and everything. And it hit the lock button and nothing happened. it was like, oh no.
00:06:50
whattimeisit
new car.
00:06:50
Chris
But then I remembered I hadn't plugged the door back in because I disconnected it.
00:06:50
whattimeisit
Oh, no.
00:06:54
Chris
So I didn't like set off an airbag or something.
00:06:55
whattimeisit
Shark, shark.
00:06:56
Chris
So yeah, did that. And then I was like, the locks work.
00:07:01
whattimeisit
i My friend, long-time friend from college, texted me yesterday. Hey, I got something about a friend of his car. You want to come over and help me? I'm like, in our long time of knowing each other, when have you ever seen me do car maintenance?
00:07:17
whattimeisit
Not doing it. He's like, what? I'm like, no, it's not happening.
00:07:22
Chris
Yeah, should come over.
00:07:22
whattimeisit
You want me to...
00:07:23
Chris
Yeah, I got you. No problem. Sure.
00:07:25
whattimeisit
Yeah, ah you don't brakes. Those are for pussies. No, because I do go over his house. it's his like His house is my project house where I'll just be like, yeah, I'll rewire a ceiling fan here and I'll figure it out.
00:07:40
whattimeisit
So I've like run wiring his house. I've done ceiling fans. I've thought a lot of like candy main crap at his house that I won't do in my house because I want it done right.
00:07:46
Chris
Well, let's say, yeah, you get the first job done there so you know what you're doing. Hmm.
00:07:50
whattimeisit
Right.
00:07:54
whattimeisit
But I just let the i let all of the maintenance issues pile up on my vehicle, and then I'm just like, cool, this is a dealership's problem now. can get a new car. It's just better issue.
00:08:07
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:08:07
Chris
yeah yeah i there are some things i mean it used to be you bought well at least me i would buy a car And I would also, i would go to the parts store and I would buy the Chilton or Hanes manual that showed like every piece of that car, like taken apart and everything. So you could fiddle with it. And now everything's so computerized and all it's just, it's too much for me.
00:08:31
whattimeisit
Yeah, you you and I have very different ah backgrounds when it comes to maintenance.
00:08:38
whattimeisit
It is the one thing that the Salisbury Fire Department does not understand and still does not understand about me. don't do maintenance. I never pretended to do maintenance. I never said I'm good at this shit. And people are just like, oh, you do this and this and this and you fix it. I'm like, that's not on my list of skills.
00:08:55
whattimeisit
I put this this. This wet substance on this hot substance. That's the end of my training. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
00:09:05
whattimeisit
it is the It is the fire department way to like fiddle with everything.
00:09:05
Chris
yeah oh yeah yeah
00:09:09
whattimeisit
Sort of half-fixed shit. ah And I just learned a long time ago, it's better to just pay somebody knows what the fuck they're doing, and then it's fixed.
00:09:18
Chris
yeah let me I've got people for that yeah yeah
00:09:19
whattimeisit
Done. Like, you hang cabinets. I don't hang cabinets. I got people for that.
00:09:27
whattimeisit
Because I'm just going to be mad at myself when it's not right. This way I can be mad at somebody else.
00:09:30
Chris
yeah
00:09:34
Chris
Sir, I've paid you for a surface. Why haven't you done said service correctly?
00:09:38
whattimeisit
Yeah. Yeah. i yeah
00:09:41
Chris
Yeah.
00:09:42
whattimeisit
I look at the ceiling that I painted down here. It looks like crap. like I'm like, just going have to get somebody in here and fix this.
00:09:48
Chris
I want to say we're finally getting our roof leak addressed in the next couple of weeks.
00:09:56
whattimeisit
Oh, that's good. and

Home Improvement & Vehicle Talk

00:09:57
Chris
Yeah.
00:09:57
whattimeisit
Just...
00:09:57
Chris
Yeah. But of course now, I mean, you can see like some wet spots. on the drywall. I'm always like, that looks like mold.
00:10:04
whattimeisit
Right.
00:10:05
Chris
I'm like, it's probably some kind of mold. It's not black mold.
00:10:08
whattimeisit
Right.
00:10:08
Chris
What are we going to do? i was like, well, when they fix the roof, I'm going to cut those sections out and we'll put new drywall up.
00:10:10
whattimeisit
Just repaint it.
00:10:14
Chris
I said, but when we cut it out, I'm going to put my head up there. And yeah, she's like, yeah, we need to look around and make sure. i was like, oh yeah, yeah. You know, we'll bleach anything we have to or whatever. I said, but this might, I think to myself, this might be another storage area we could have.
00:10:26
Chris
So might convert it to like a little pull down attic over the garage.
00:10:31
whattimeisit
Nice.
00:10:32
Chris
Yeah.
00:10:32
whattimeisit
Yeah. I've got a two wet spots upstairs from where I had roof leak before I had my roof leaks and I just ignore them.
00:10:41
Chris
What's other thing? mean, this is out in the garage. It's fine.
00:10:45
whattimeisit
But none of that, but like if you talk to anybody about drywall, once it dries, it's just back to normal. It's fine.
00:10:51
Chris
Yeah, yeah.
00:10:51
whattimeisit
So just paint over the spot.
00:10:51
Chris
Yeah, yeah, here yeah.
00:10:53
whattimeisit
be fine. like My wife, we have like, yeah, you just, yeah.
00:10:54
Chris
That's where you get the the kills done.
00:10:59
whattimeisit
Well, my wife, we have like a little bit of mildew that grows up in the ceiling of the, of the bathroom. But I've got, i had them put the green drywall up in there.
00:11:04
Chris
Mm-hmm.
00:11:07
whattimeisit
I got, you know, all the, and she's like, well, it's it's this.
00:11:07
Chris
Yeah.
00:11:09
whattimeisit
I'm like, just take a little spray, Lysol spray, wipe it off.
00:11:11
Chris
hu
00:11:13
whattimeisit
It goes away.
00:11:14
Chris
Yeah.
00:11:15
whattimeisit
I'm like, it's a wet bathroom. It gets moist in here.
00:11:19
Chris
Yeah.
00:11:19
whattimeisit
What are you going to yeah
00:11:19
Chris
Get a fern.
00:11:22
whattimeisit
Yeah, something.
00:11:23
Chris
Yeah.
00:11:24
whattimeisit
The drywall tape is sagging. She's like, how are you going to fix that? like, call somebody? I don't
00:11:28
Chris
Yeah.
00:11:28
whattimeisit
know.
00:11:30
Chris
I mean, you could peel it down, sand it down, re-mud it, re-tape it.
00:11:33
whattimeisit
yeah' have to I'd have to remod the whole thing.
00:11:37
Chris
yeah
00:11:38
whattimeisit
Nightmare.
00:11:38
Chris
You do the contractor special and just slather some paint up there and that'll adhere it.
00:11:43
whattimeisit
And when I go to sell the house, that's what I'll do. They won't even know.
00:11:49
Chris
ah Let's say I watch some of these videos and it's like home inspections gone wrong and it's yeah God, some of the things that I guess all this one, they put this beautiful new carpet in their living room and all.
00:12:02
Chris
And in the corner, they have a PVC pipe that comes up and then goes out the wall. And has a little tag on it that says sump pump line. Don't trip. I'm like, what? No, either build something around that or move it. Don't just, it was literally like in the corner of the ah living room, like an eight foot pipe that went down on the floor.
00:12:25
whattimeisit
when i When I bought this house, I was like, this weird. This house doesn't have a sump pump. Because, like, have a split level.
00:12:33
Chris
Yeah.
00:12:33
whattimeisit
So, you know, water is going somewhere.
00:12:37
Chris
Yeah? Oh, yeah.
00:12:38
whattimeisit
And so I'm like, Scotty, it's crazy. How did this miracle happen that don't have a sump pump? And then, like, years later, I was in the in the the back room, and I'm like...
00:12:49
whattimeisit
feels a little damp right here it's a little linoleum floor i cut the linoleum and they had just taken a piece of metal covered the sump and put linoleum back over it and i was like what the who why would you so i'm like
00:12:52
Chris
Yeah.
00:13:01
Chris
Oh, yeah. that's
00:13:07
Chris
Contractor special.
00:13:09
whattimeisit
So I had to like run a sump pump line. i built a little box to go around the sump so that, you know, it's, you don't fall into the sump pump.
00:13:14
Chris
Yeah.
00:13:19
whattimeisit
It's crazy. I guess they were just like, well, I want that, that little corner more importantly than I want the water to drain out from my foundation.
00:13:27
Chris
Yeah.
00:13:29
Chris
yeah
00:13:29
whattimeisit
Maniacs.
00:13:30
Chris
Yeah. My neighbor, as I had my Jeep door torn apart yesterday, Got my earbuds you working on stuff. And he comes over, he's like, hey. I was like, oh God, you scared me. I was like, hey, what's up? take He's like, so, you know, I'm sure Sarah told you we're putting a fence in. was like, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a great idea. He's like, so there's gonna be that alleyway between your fence and my fence.
00:13:50
Chris
was like, okay. He's like, mean, that's kind of narrow. Would you be okay if we just like killed it off with round off or whatever and just like paved it or put stone? i was like, sure. He's like, are you sure? i was like, yeah, kill it, kill all the grass. I don't care.
00:14:06
whattimeisit
yeah everybody Why not just put the fences... Why not tie the fences together?
00:14:12
Chris
In case one of us moves, that way you don't have a tied fence to your new neighbor that you may or may not like.
00:14:21
whattimeisit
But then you still fence. Who cares?
00:14:22
Chris
I i don't know, man. but the guy the neighbor Our neighbors to the other side, they left that alleyway. So yeah.
00:14:29
whattimeisit
Why? That's crazy.
00:14:30
Chris
I don't know.
00:14:30
whattimeisit
Okay.
00:14:31
Chris
Well, one of it is. i mean, it's two different colored fences.
00:14:35
whattimeisit
No, just get the same... but See, that's why you have to establish dominance. You put up the fence first, and then they have to conform to the fence that you put up. And then and once they've conformed, you put up a new fence just to screw with them.
00:14:44
Chris
yeah
00:14:49
Chris
Just change out five panels.
00:14:51
whattimeisit
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:14:55
whattimeisit
Yeah, gonna...
00:14:55
Chris
Is there a way to like refresh panel, the fence panels, the PVC ones?
00:15:02
whattimeisit
I think you just have to... I don't know, break them out and put a new one in?
00:15:06
Chris
Oh God.
00:15:07
whattimeisit
Because I've got a broken one in the back.
00:15:07
Chris
i don't want to do that. Yeah. But like, I've got some that, know, it's just like the sun fade, you know, plastic.
00:15:14
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:15:15
Chris
I don't know if you could like, you take a blowtorch to them. Like, no, no, but I've seen like, would they do that to like stadium seats.
00:15:18
whattimeisit
Yeah, definitely.
00:15:22
Chris
They torch them gently in it.
00:15:22
whattimeisit
Sure, yeah, yeah.
00:15:25
Chris
don't know. I would do that and I would, I would have a melted slag somewhere.
00:15:25
whattimeisit
I don't know.
00:15:29
whattimeisit
I have a panel that The county clearly was cut in the grass and kicked, I don't know, must have been a bladed weapon from a samurai through my fucking fence.
00:15:39
Chris
Yeah.
00:15:41
whattimeisit
got and But it's on the back, so I don't really see it and i don't care until I go out there and a we back I'm like, God damn it!
00:15:44
Chris
Yeah.
00:15:46
whattimeisit
And I just ignore it for another six months.
00:15:48
Chris
yeah
00:15:49
whattimeisit
But I'm about to take out a two panels of my fence and put a shed in.
00:15:55
Chris
Ooh.
00:15:55
whattimeisit
by And by when I say I'm about to, I'm about to pay somebody. to take two panels out of my fence. I'll just move one of those back there.
00:16:04
Chris
Yeah.
00:16:06
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:16:06
Chris
It's like, I've got to redo, I want to redo my shed, make it a little bit bigger. I'm trying to decide if I want to just totally demo it or just knock down a wall and add to it.
00:16:15
whattimeisit
I regret not knocking down my shed and keeping one wall because my original shed was before the county setback.
00:16:25
Chris
Yeah.
00:16:25
whattimeisit
So we have a 12-inch setback rule. So I got that stupid space between my fence line and the shed.
00:16:28
Chris
ah
00:16:31
Chris
Yeah.
00:16:33
whattimeisit
But this one I'm going to take where my stupid fish pond was, or is currently. I'm just going to put a shed right over that, tie it into the fence line, and have a little shed for my bikes.
00:16:41
Chris
Yeah.
00:16:45
whattimeisit
and
00:16:46
Chris
Nice.
00:16:46
whattimeisit
I can't have a garage. That's my brother. Just build a garage in your house. i don't understand why you're not doing that. i don't know I'm sure a shed and a garage are probably the same price.
00:16:55
Chris
Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. It's comparable.
00:16:57
whattimeisit
Yeah, I work for the city.
00:16:58
Chris
Yeah, yeah. They say, you know, the garages are the new sheds.
00:17:01
whattimeisit
Yeah, that's what they all say.
00:17:04
Chris
Yeah.
00:17:04
whattimeisit
work for the city of Salisbury, but I see myself getting the...
00:17:06
Chris
Yeah. Just put a pole building out there. Yeah.
00:17:11
whattimeisit
Yeah, sure.
00:17:12
Chris
Yeah.
00:17:15
Chris
ah
00:17:16
whattimeisit
not really a thing here where I live.
00:17:18
Chris
yeah
00:17:20
Chris
yeah
00:17:20
whattimeisit
You know, you don't just like put ah a building bigger than your house in your backyard.
00:17:26
Chris
No?
00:17:27
whattimeisit
now
00:17:28
Chris
And it's like, I don't, yeah.
00:17:29
whattimeisit
Some people do it.
00:17:31
Chris
And I mean, bully to those people who do it, but I look at some of them, I'm like, what are you doing with this wasted space? And what do you mean wasted space? I was like, well, you've got like an 18 foot ceiling in here.
00:17:41
Chris
What are you putting above you?
00:17:42
whattimeisit
and
00:17:43
Chris
Well, nothing. was like, okay.
00:17:47
whattimeisit
Some of those pole buildings you guys have down there on the shore are... Just knock your house down and move into the pole building. I don't know what you guys are doing.
00:17:53
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
00:17:57
whattimeisit
so much It's like you have this crappy rancher in front that's falling apart and then it's like this 20,000 square foot pole building out back with you know heated seats and you know.
00:18:05
Chris
Yeah.
00:18:07
Chris
Well, they also have to have to have a place to put their brand new $80,000 or three quarter ton jacked up pickup.
00:18:14
whattimeisit
That's true. It's true.
00:18:15
Chris
Yeah.
00:18:16
whattimeisit
and Yeah. I've never seen people complain about the price of things and then drive up in their $80,000 pickup truck. And then three years later have a new $80,000 pickup truck.
00:18:27
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. ah
00:18:31
whattimeisit
I think I can think of certain people who I work with who have spent more on pickup trucks in five years than I spent on cars in my entire life.
00:18:40
Chris
Oh, easily. Yes.
00:18:42
whattimeisit
And boy,
00:18:42
Chris
yeah if There are probably people who have spent more on vehicles than I've spent on my house.
00:18:46
whattimeisit
yeah, that's true. And boy does it piss them off that I would drive a car.
00:18:50
Chris
i yeah I don't understand that.
00:18:52
whattimeisit
it Really weird.
00:18:54
Chris
Yeah.
00:18:55
whattimeisit
I'm sorry they don't drive a pickup truck 100 miles each way to work? At one mile per gallon?
00:19:03
Chris
no a mile and a half.
00:19:04
whattimeisit
so Yeah. it's Why would I do that?
00:19:08
Chris
Yeah, that's I don't. I don't understand it.
00:19:11
whattimeisit
Carry your deer carcasses.
00:19:16
Chris
Yeah. And then the ones that that truck has never had anything in the bed of it that's heavier than a pound, you know, never pulled anything, no nothing.
00:19:21
whattimeisit
No.
00:19:24
whattimeisit
and ah kick It can't get dirty. Why
00:19:29
Chris
Yeah.
00:19:31
whattimeisit
didn't that happen?
00:19:32
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. I don't get it.
00:19:36
whattimeisit
Cars, I'm very much of the, this is a vehicle. It gets me from point A to point B.
00:19:41
Chris
Yeah.
00:19:41
whattimeisit
I want the cheapest one that's comfortable and safe.
00:19:44
Chris
Yeah.
00:19:45
whattimeisit
And reliable enough to get me to work.
00:19:47
Chris
yeah
00:19:49
whattimeisit
And so far, that's Subaru. Brought to you by Subaru.
00:19:52
Chris
Yeah. but By Matt Slap Subaru.
00:19:57
whattimeisit
and Not anymore. It's gone.
00:19:58
Chris
No?
00:19:58
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:19:59
Chris
he sold?
00:20:00
whattimeisit
so Sold out.
00:20:00
Chris
God, what a bastard.
00:20:03
whattimeisit
I know. and know.
00:20:04
Chris
Hmm.
00:20:05
whattimeisit
I know. Terrible.
00:20:06
Chris
Hmm. I felt bad for the this total side tangent. The other day, Thursday, finally leaving work. was supposed leave at 3.30. I think I finally left at like little bit after 4.
00:20:17
Chris
On my way home, was like, you know what? going to take Division Street because I just, yeah, I'll run the back way. And look and there's this SUV. It's a Ford Explorer. So I'm pulled over to the side of the road in traffic still, like righte right past College Avenue. So I'm in a city vehicle.
00:20:36
Chris
So I roll my window down. There's this older fella. I said, you're all right. No, not really. I'm like, oh, shit. So turn my lights on. pull over. What seems to be a problem?
00:20:46
Chris
Well, it just conked out on me. What you mean it conked out? Well, i've had issues with it, and it conked out. won't start. said, okay. I said, do you have a tow truck? No. Well, I bought this new phone, and it doesn't work.
00:20:57
Chris
Great.
00:20:58
whattimeisit
Mm-hmm.
00:21:00
Chris
So I said, all right. Find your insurance cards. We find it. So now State Farm thinks that this man, that I am this man's cell phone. So I'm still getting texts from them. Um, but we get the tow truck set up and everything.
00:21:14
Chris
And I was out there for like an hour and I did, but I saw on his front, it had this like side of the road car shop. I said, is that where you bought it from? oh yeah. Yeah. yeah They did me really good. You know, I've wanted 1500 for the Volkswagen I was trading in or whatever. And they gave me a even thousand. I'm like, oh, that doesn't sound equitable, but okay.
00:21:41
Chris
I said, well, while we wait for your tow truck, let's call them, see if they can work on it. So call, and again, I'm, you know, this is so-and-so, or, you know, this Chris. I'm calling on behalf of Mr. So-and-so.
00:21:54
Chris
says he bought this vehicle from you a week ago. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Is he liking it? I said, well, it died on him today, and he wants to get it fixed. And she said, the girl was very nice. She's like, okay, but as we explained to him, this was an as-is deal. That's why he paid cash for it.
00:22:08
Chris
ah We'll fix it, but it's on him. i was like, All right, I'll let him know. I told you, so that's not right. i was like, you need to take this up with them. Oh, look, your tow trucks here. Have a nice night, sir. Oh my gosh.
00:22:19
whattimeisit
What's you get for getting involved?
00:22:21
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:22:23
whattimeisit
So that's what you get.
00:22:23
Chris
So that's my good deed for the year.
00:22:27
whattimeisit
Yeah. That's what you get for being involved in that.
00:22:31
Chris
Yeah.

Halloween & Work Dynamics

00:22:34
whattimeisit
Well, we already moved to topic one.
00:22:34
Chris
Yeah.
00:22:36
Chris
Yeah. Topic one.
00:22:38
whattimeisit
I'm most excited for topic two, but topic one.
00:22:40
Chris
Okay.
00:22:43
whattimeisit
Topic one. So, uh, Clearly Halloween just passed, if listening to this in some sort of order.
00:22:47
Chris
Yes, it did.
00:22:50
whattimeisit
ah My, well, my wife loves Halloween, so we make a big deal of it.
00:22:55
Chris
Yeah.
00:22:57
whattimeisit
But the thing that I noticed, two things I noticed. trunk and treats are terrible. I'm saying it now. It's fine if you want to do an extra trunk or treat, but to take away trick or treating from children is terrible.
00:23:08
Chris
Yeah.
00:23:11
whattimeisit
You're terrible person.
00:23:14
whattimeisit
Because apparently there's neighborhoods that don't allow trick-or-treaters.
00:23:17
Chris
What?
00:23:19
whattimeisit
yeah Apparently that's a thing.
00:23:20
Chris
but What? i I don't understand. Okay. Proceed.
00:23:26
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:23:26
Chris
Yeah.
00:23:27
whattimeisit
Proceeding. That's terrible, right?
00:23:28
Chris
Yeah.
00:23:29
whattimeisit
like If you live in a place and you're like, ah I hate children that come around and spread joy. You're a jerk.
00:23:38
Chris
yeah Yeah.
00:23:38
whattimeisit
That's all I say.
00:23:38
Chris
or Or just turn your lights off and, you know.
00:23:43
whattimeisit
Right. And prepare for it be egged.
00:23:43
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
00:23:46
whattimeisit
Yeah. But my neighbors, my little street, we all sat outside, which is, this is kind of where I'm going with this.
00:23:54
Chris
Yeah.
00:23:55
whattimeisit
We all sat outside because since COVID, we got to this habit of setting up little tables and sitting outside with the kids.
00:24:01
Chris
Mm-hmm.
00:24:04
whattimeisit
And the kids love it.
00:24:06
Chris
Yeah.
00:24:07
whattimeisit
They come to a little table. We've got all kinds of, it's out of control.
00:24:10
Chris
ah You guys are insane, but.
00:24:12
whattimeisit
We're insane. I fully admit, it takes like six to seven minutes per kid for them to go through the table. And we're causing a backup on the on the on the block. But we all sit outside.
00:24:26
whattimeisit
And then when there's like a little lull in the kids, we all sit there and talk. And it's pretty nice.
00:24:30
Chris
Yeah.
00:24:32
whattimeisit
Like we don't normally do that, which is also weird.
00:24:34
Chris
Yeah.
00:24:35
whattimeisit
Like we're all very friendly to each other. And we all do this once a year.
00:24:37
Chris
Right.
00:24:39
whattimeisit
think we should do that more than... That's the side the point. But got me thinking, I was like, because of COVID, at least for my neighborhood, Halloween has changed for the better.
00:24:42
Chris
Yeah.
00:24:51
Chris
Yeah.
00:24:52
whattimeisit
And I started thinking about what kind of other things have changed for the better because of this? And I couldn't really think of, yeah.
00:24:58
Chris
Because of COVID?
00:25:02
whattimeisit
And I think that might be the only one I came up with that was for the better.
00:25:09
Chris
Yeah.
00:25:09
whattimeisit
Like work from home became a thing, but then they're fighting against it. You know, which.
00:25:14
Chris
Yeah, I would virtual meetings, that's a benefit.
00:25:16
whattimeisit
ah Yeah, virtual meetings. Yeah. Most meetings could just not be any meetings.
00:25:23
Chris
Well, yes, but
00:25:24
whattimeisit
How many meetings do you think you go to? And you go to more Marines than I do. That actually gets so something gets done.
00:25:31
Chris
Yeah, yeah. five percent
00:25:33
whattimeisit
Yeah, it's I think five percent high.
00:25:35
Chris
yeah yeah
00:25:37
whattimeisit
I think every time I've been involved in a meeting, it's a circle jerk session of just wasting everybody's time.
00:25:43
Chris
Yeah.
00:25:44
whattimeisit
And it's terrible.
00:25:47
Chris
Well, and I hate the ones that are, you know, we've all been at this meeting for, you know, the last, you know, each each other. We've been doing this once a month for the last year. ah oh but look, this agency has a new representative. So let's go around the room and everybody say your name. And what's your favorite flavor pie?
00:26:07
whattimeisit
Right.
00:26:08
Chris
No, no, I am not going to, after this meeting say, Hey, by the way, Apple pie. We should definitely. Yeah. We should talk more.
00:26:16
whattimeisit
You and we choose blueberry.
00:26:16
Chris
No. God. I just. Oh my gosh.
00:26:20
whattimeisit
i It drives me bonkers to sit in meetings and just get nothing done.
00:26:28
Chris
Yeah.
00:26:29
whattimeisit
You know, my wife, God bless her, she sits in virtual meetings all the time. And I'm like, did you guys accomplish anything? No.
00:26:37
whattimeisit
why are you having this meeting?
00:26:39
Chris
Yeah.
00:26:40
whattimeisit
What is it going on?
00:26:41
Chris
Yeah.
00:26:42
whattimeisit
Well, this time, this time we had to show off our Halloween pet costumes.
00:26:42
Chris
Did you have an agenda? Did you meet the items on the agenda?
00:26:48
Chris
Yeah.
00:26:50
whattimeisit
What the hell does that have to do with your job?
00:26:53
Chris
Oh
00:26:55
whattimeisit
That part, that comes from people who do not have friendships outside of work.
00:26:57
Chris
my god.
00:27:00
Chris
Yeah.
00:27:01
whattimeisit
Like, because you friendships
00:27:04
Chris
Oh my God, I'm going to do that. The next quarterly officers meeting. Like, all right, yeah everybody go around the room. And what's your favorite color sock?
00:27:13
whattimeisit
not coming to this meeting. not I'm not going to be there. Those meetings already annoy me, so I'm not coming.
00:27:17
Chris
ah
00:27:21
whattimeisit
The running gag for the Court the Officer meeting is that I've been on the agenda for the last year.
00:27:26
Chris
And never gotten to you. Yeah.
00:27:27
whattimeisit
It's never gotten to me, and I just gave up. TJ was like, well, we'll get you next time. I said, just don't bother.
00:27:33
Chris
Yeah.
00:27:34
whattimeisit
The information I have is a year old at this point. It's not worth it.
00:27:36
Chris
Yeah.
00:27:37
whattimeisit
If it wasn't important enough for years of training, we're good. I just can't stand meeting meetings. I can't say virtual. I think virtual meetings waste even more time somehow.
00:27:45
Chris
Yeah.
00:27:50
whattimeisit
Except that you don't have to drive there.
00:27:52
Chris
Yeah. That's a big thing to drive. Yeah.
00:27:56
whattimeisit
A good and bad is virtual health.
00:27:58
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. yeah yeah
00:28:02
whattimeisit
Like if I get my blood work done from the doctor for my yearly physical, that's because I'm a good boy and get my yearly physical.
00:28:07
Chris
Mm-hmm.
00:28:10
Chris
Right.
00:28:11
whattimeisit
She's then like, all right, well, we have to have follow-up. It'll just be virtual to, you know, discuss your blood work.
00:28:19
Chris
Yeah.
00:28:19
whattimeisit
Like, yeah, whatever. And then you find out that ah costs more money, costs me more money for the virtual follow-up than it did for the physical.
00:28:21
Chris
Yeah.
00:28:28
Chris
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. That makes sense. That makes sense.
00:28:33
whattimeisit
She talks to me for three seconds and says, hey, but look, that'll be $25.
00:28:40
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's what? 8.30 a minute.
00:28:45
whattimeisit
Oh, it's crazy. um I'm telling you, if it's three minutes, that is, it's two of those minutes of her saying, hey, how are you I haven't seen you in two weeks since we did your blood drop, your physical.
00:28:51
Chris
Yeah.
00:28:57
whattimeisit
Like, and then it's, yep, that'll be $25.
00:28:58
Chris
Yeah.
00:29:02
Chris
Yeah.
00:29:02
whattimeisit
cool
00:29:03
Chris
what's Or the ones that don't give you that option. Like I had to drive almost three hours to... meet with this surgeon to talk for 20 some minutes when that could have been virtual.
00:29:16
whattimeisit
Right. Yeah.
00:29:17
Chris
And then, side tangent, stupid insurance. So I had my annual physical with my doctor a few weeks ago, because again, I'm a good boy.
00:29:24
whattimeisit
Sure.
00:29:27
whattimeisit
Mm-hmm.
00:29:27
Chris
follow up. And I said, you know, the week before i'd called them and said, Hey, I'm having this surgery done in November. they want me to have a pre-surgery physical. Can we just loop that in? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll just take care of it all.
00:29:40
Chris
They called me back the next day. Well, insurance isn't going to cover it if it's both. So we'll do your annual physical now, and then we'll do your pre-surge appointment on, you know, but actually it's tomorrow.
00:29:56
Chris
was like, okay. She's like, but everything's going to be covered the same. So the only thing we'll just have to do an EKG that Monday. was like, could I do one at work and bring it into you? It's just no.
00:30:06
whattimeisit
Right.
00:30:07
Chris
But it's just seriously, this is. Yeah. So I'm going to go to the doctor tomorrow for half hour.
00:30:13
whattimeisit
Right.
00:30:13
Chris
Maybe.
00:30:14
whattimeisit
Right. To get it totally done.
00:30:17
Chris
Yeah.
00:30:17
whattimeisit
And then, you're more december right and because December, you're going to do your work physical in a month.
00:30:18
Chris
Yeah. By somebody who's not a cardiologist.
00:30:24
Chris
Exactly. December 15th is when I get to do that. So, yeah. Yeah. I'll be all physicaled up for the last 35 Golly.
00:30:30
whattimeisit
Yeah, I made them switch my annual physical go to like June, I think.
00:30:33
Chris
hang
00:30:35
whattimeisit
May or June I do it.
00:30:36
Chris
yeah
00:30:37
whattimeisit
So I'm like not doing them all for a month.
00:30:40
Chris
Well, I had mine in like June, but then something happened one year and it got pushed back and then, you know, insurance, well, they won't pay it for exactly a year later. It's gotta be a year and one day.
00:30:52
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:30:52
Chris
And then that was on a weekend. It just, yeah. ah
00:30:55
whattimeisit
Yeah, i had that conversation with my dentist. Because, you know, to get your cleaned, it's got to six months and a day or something like that. So, eventually, we're just going to flip-flop my schedules because we're just adding a day every year.
00:31:02
Chris
Yeah.
00:31:06
Chris
Yeah.
00:31:07
whattimeisit
So, if I live long enough,
00:31:09
Chris
Yeah.

Convenience Services & Work Culture

00:31:11
whattimeisit
this is going to really screw things up.
00:31:12
Chris
180 years yeah that reminds me i need to call and make a point where a dentist i was like yeah at my physical they're like oh yeah you still seeing dr caputa i was like who the hell oh that's my dentist yeah
00:31:13
whattimeisit
Yeah. Yeah, see? That's my plan.
00:31:32
whattimeisit
Nice. Yeah, they always give me crap about my hearing. they're like, you're not doing hearing in eye tests? I'm like, no, I have good vision and I have good hearing. I don't need crap.
00:31:38
Chris
well and you do that your city physical
00:31:41
whattimeisit
Yeah, basically.
00:31:43
Chris
Hey, so I took advantage of the city's vision clinic a couple of weeks ago.
00:31:48
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:31:48
Chris
Yeah. Got every free eye exam. They're like, ah, you've changed a little bit. Do you want new glasses? Like, sure. You know, I do you notice things, some things are a little bit fuzzy further away. Like, okay. That's like, i so I looked at some, you know, frames and everything. They're like, all right. Yeah.
00:32:03
Chris
You'll get an invoice tonight. And these were the cheapest frames I've gotten in. can't remember how long they're only like 130 And she's like, yeah, they'll probably ship in like three to four weeks. Like a week and a half later, I get a package in the mail. My new glasses are here.
00:32:17
Chris
Bada bing, bada boom.
00:32:18
whattimeisit
Yeah, that's nice.
00:32:19
Chris
Yeah. was like, that's convenient.
00:32:22
whattimeisit
I would take a vision, but I have perfect vision, so...
00:32:24
Chris
a Jerk. Eagle eyes, Ron.
00:32:29
whattimeisit
oh ah Eagle Eyes Whismur over here.
00:32:31
Chris
ah
00:32:33
whattimeisit
Yeah, so those are the things I was thinking about mostly about COVID was...
00:32:34
Chris
But um ah grocery delivery.
00:32:38
whattimeisit
I can't do it, man!
00:32:40
Chris
Well, I can for non-fresh stuff.
00:32:42
whattimeisit
i I can't do it. what We were talking about this the other day, because
00:32:45
Chris
Well, I don't do it anyway. My wife takes care of that. Yeah.
00:32:48
whattimeisit
Sure. But go to the grocery store and you see these people pull up in the, what were the spots where they just delivered out to your car.
00:32:56
Chris
Yeah.
00:32:56
whattimeisit
I'm like, I can't sit in my car while some poor kid making minimum wage loads my car up. Like I'm some sort of king or ruler going, peasant, put those in the back. Can't do it.
00:33:08
Chris
yeah
00:33:09
whattimeisit
I'm still an able-bodied adult human.
00:33:13
Chris
Yeah, but there's all the people in the store.
00:33:16
whattimeisit
I could just go at 7am on a Saturday. That's what we do.
00:33:20
Chris
It's just people.
00:33:23
whattimeisit
Yeah, there's no people at 7am.
00:33:24
Chris
That's true.
00:33:26
whattimeisit
That's why you go then.
00:33:28
Chris
Yeah.
00:33:29
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:33:30
Chris
It's just yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:33:32
whattimeisit
I can't sit there and do the grocery delivery thing.
00:33:36
Chris
What about if they deliver it to your house?
00:33:39
whattimeisit
Oh no, I would feel worse.
00:33:41
Chris
Really?
00:33:41
whattimeisit
I don't even really like getting DoorDash.
00:33:44
Chris
Oh, I do and I don't.
00:33:49
whattimeisit
Something about it feels just wrong to me.
00:33:50
Chris
yeah It's like the only food that should be delivered is like Chinese and pizza. Uh.
00:34:00
whattimeisit
Yeah. Yeah.
00:34:04
whattimeisit
Yeah, we got Vietnamese delivered because it's just annoyingly far away. And then I think about it, I'm like, I'm just making this poor door dasher drive the annoying drive that I don't want to drive.
00:34:10
Chris
ah
00:34:17
Chris
uh yeah it's like the next house isn't your neighbors like can we doordash something to your house and just come pick it up
00:34:18
whattimeisit
you know right at the edge of his little DoorDash zone that we're in. He's like, these motherfuckers. Right, yeah.
00:34:30
whattimeisit
Yeah, yeah. That's... I just don't... I get it. And it must be lucrative, because a lot of people do it.
00:34:37
Chris
yeah oh yeah
00:34:40
whattimeisit
So we're creating jobs, which is good. Because we need them. But... An Uber kind of came out, but kind of went away in his back.
00:34:51
whattimeisit
I don't know what's going on with Uber.
00:34:52
Chris
uh
00:34:53
whattimeisit
and don't really use it as much anymore.
00:34:57
Chris
um yeah i was just looking online to see you benefits from the pandemic um improved hygiene awareness i don't think that worked there are definitely people that didn't yeah um i guess a better awareness of mental health for some things
00:35:08
whattimeisit
But that definitely didn't work.
00:35:11
whattimeisit
Yeah. They did not take this look.
00:35:22
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:35:25
Chris
Yeah.
00:35:26
whattimeisit
I guess. I don't know if that's because of COVID or we're just in an era where mental health has become a thing.
00:35:33
Chris
Yeah.
00:35:35
whattimeisit
i think my problem with the mental health conversation is that we we we knew all knew how to deal with this up until like 100 years ago.
00:35:47
Chris
yeah
00:35:47
whattimeisit
And then we stopped dealing with it. And now we're dealing with it the wrong way. I think.
00:35:55
Chris
Um,
00:35:55
whattimeisit
Like...
00:36:00
Chris
guess a little.
00:36:06
whattimeisit
Benefits of...
00:36:08
Chris
see. Greater investment in hospitals. I don't think that's worked.
00:36:12
whattimeisit
No.
00:36:14
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
00:36:16
whattimeisit
A bunch of hospitals will be closing soon, so...
00:36:18
Chris
Yeah. Um, an aversion to unnecessary travel.
00:36:24
whattimeisit
That's fair.
00:36:25
Chris
Yeah.
00:36:26
whattimeisit
That's fair.
00:36:29
Chris
Oh, decrease in the use of paper.
00:36:31
whattimeisit
Oh, that is true. Except the Salisbury Fire Department.
00:36:37
Chris
Well, I mean, you know, 30 years from now, they'll finally catch you on. on
00:36:41
whattimeisit
we still We're still printing out things after we email them to other people.
00:36:46
Chris
I dev side tangent inside baseball. I developed a form for somebody the other day and they said, cool. can we send this off to a printer so it can be made in duplicates?
00:36:59
Chris
I said, why? It's an electronic form. Yeah, but that's why I have a paper copy. ah What are you going do with a paper copy? Well, I'm going to scan it and then save it.
00:37:12
Chris
I just, I looked at the person and I know this is the wrong thing to say as a deputy chief in our organization, and but I just looked at and like,
00:37:25
Chris
I didn't realize you were that much of an idiot and I walked away.
00:37:33
whattimeisit
Wow.
00:37:34
Chris
I'm going to print the thing for you to sign the thing so I can scan the thing to save the thing. Yeah.
00:37:42
whattimeisit
that That's a level of crazy that I don't think I've heard in a long time.
00:37:46
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
00:37:50
Chris
yeah
00:37:51
whattimeisit
At my station, we write it on a board.
00:37:54
Chris
yeah
00:37:55
whattimeisit
We tag it.
00:37:56
Chris
Yeah.
00:37:56
whattimeisit
We send an email about it.
00:37:59
Chris
Yep.
00:38:00
whattimeisit
We print out that email and put it into a binder.
00:38:03
Chris
Yeah.
00:38:03
whattimeisit
And then we write it down into a book.
00:38:03
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. one i Then I like the follow-up emails like five, six days later or whatever. This has been addressed. Please remove from book.
00:38:16
Chris
Well, that, fingers crossed, that should be changing. The new hub is working. We've done a lot of so you know internal tests with it. And it looks like.
00:38:26
whattimeisit
I appreciate that you guys are so optimistic that they will still be printing it out, and putting it the book, putting on the board, putting it on a tag. It's very optimistic of you.
00:38:34
Chris
Yeah.
00:38:40
whattimeisit
All you had to do, and I told this to that chief officer years ago, was create a form. like It would even be an Excel spreadsheet for each piece of apparatus.
00:38:50
Chris
Yep.
00:38:51
whattimeisit
As the thing comes in, you put it on that living spreadsheet, put it on the N drive.
00:38:54
Chris
Yep. ye
00:38:55
whattimeisit
When it gets done, you take it off.
00:38:58
Chris
yeah but we have maniacs that keep things on the n drive like all right no no no i'm talking about when i sent that thing out to the chief officers was like hey have your shifts go through and clean out you know your drive so you know d shift clean out your n drive folder and i got well i mean there's some really important stuff on there i'm like
00:39:04
whattimeisit
Sure, I've got stuff on the N drive.
00:39:24
Chris
I looked at some of the shifts and you have files for people who haven't worked here in 10 years.
00:39:32
whattimeisit
That's fair.
00:39:33
Chris
Yeah. was like, you have saved work orders from 2013. Yeah. yeah But I mean, for reference, i was like, we don't have that vehicle anymore.
00:39:43
Chris
Oh, I, uh, uh,
00:39:45
whattimeisit
I was telling people about that, that there's a captain who works on my shift. not going to say his name.
00:39:51
Chris
yeah.
00:39:52
whattimeisit
Can give any more information than that? Who has never deleted an email in his entire career.
00:39:57
Chris
Oh my gosh.
00:39:58
whattimeisit
And is proud of the fact that if you say x he could say, well, in 2005, there was an email about it that said this.
00:39:59
Chris
yeah
00:40:06
whattimeisit
And you say, that was 20 years ago.
00:40:07
Chris
Yeah.
00:40:10
Chris
Yeah.
00:40:10
whattimeisit
Things have changed. Well, they never sent a follow-up email.
00:40:12
Chris
Yeah.
00:40:16
Chris
yeah yeah Is that person signed up for the outlook email training on Wednesday?
00:40:22
whattimeisit
but I just turned out one.
00:40:23
Chris
Because I hope so, and I hope they say that and the instructor just, their mind explodes.
00:40:28
whattimeisit
Right.
00:40:28
Chris
Golly day.
00:40:30
whattimeisit
the He brought up, that person brought up an AC note thing.
00:40:30
Chris
ah
00:40:36
whattimeisit
He's like, this happened, I remember this meeting, and I'm like, no one else does. He's
00:40:42
Chris
It was an unseasonably cool May afternoon.
00:40:44
whattimeisit
like, like i have I have the email of the AC notes.
00:40:45
Chris
i mean
00:40:48
whattimeisit
I'm like, why?
00:40:48
Chris
Yeah.
00:40:50
whattimeisit
I throw those things away as soon as they send them out.
00:40:50
Chris
Yeah.
00:40:52
whattimeisit
I read them once, I print them out for everybody to look at, and then and we throw them away.
00:40:52
Chris
Hmm.
00:40:56
Chris
Why do you print them out?
00:40:56
whattimeisit
What? Oh, because if you don't, they'll never look at him.
00:41:00
Chris
ah
00:41:00
whattimeisit
I know. Look. I'm trying to make sure they read the notes.
00:41:04
Chris
I know you're trying to reach the masses. Yeah, but there's one that you have to read to him.
00:41:10
whattimeisit
I... Well, Grandpa needs to be read to so he can go to bed. Put his little pills out. He takes them.
00:41:15
Chris
ah
00:41:15
whattimeisit
He eats his applesauce. And I read the notes to him.
00:41:19
Chris
And on B-Shift, they had.
00:41:22
whattimeisit
And on B-Shift, they had one more person become a Phaedo brush truck.
00:41:26
Chris
Yeah.
00:41:26
whattimeisit
Cool.
00:41:28
Chris
ah
00:41:28
whattimeisit
Something worth AC notes for her.
00:41:30
Chris
Oh my gosh. Well, that's like, I mean, yeah. Behind the scenes, you know, we put that stuff together beforehand and it's when it's first sent out to everybody in that group, it's things in green. We'll talk about three things in black or just, yeah. Yeah. Just so people know.
00:41:49
Chris
And certain people still try to talk about the things that in black. And Obarski was like, and no, no, no. That was just in there for ideas or, you know, so you have an awareness. We're talking about the green things and that's it. This is our agenda.
00:42:01
Chris
But what do you mean? No, this is our agenda.
00:42:05
whattimeisit
Because you guys have a wandering meeting for like four hours once a week. What is going on?
00:42:10
Chris
Well, now it's once a month, two hours.
00:42:13
whattimeisit
Oh, good.
00:42:14
Chris
Yes.
00:42:15
whattimeisit
Seems reasonable.
00:42:17
Chris
Yeah.
00:42:19
whattimeisit
you know In a world of instant communication, like if you guys wanted to discuss something, I'm sure you could ah have a have a group meeting.
00:42:22
Chris
Yep.
00:42:29
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. Yep.
00:42:30
whattimeisit
You could all have a Zoom meeting.
00:42:32
Chris
Yeah.
00:42:32
whattimeisit
You don't even have to be together.
00:42:32
Chris
Yeah. There is information that needs to be sent out. I got a, it's called a text massage at 7 a.m.
00:42:40
whattimeisit
oh oh how does that work
00:42:42
Chris
m this morning. Yeah. Yeah.
00:42:49
Chris
Animals.
00:42:50
whattimeisit
animals that that's why things don't change because those people still exist it's crazy and those people train other people to be crazy
00:42:54
Chris
Yeah.
00:42:57
Chris
I guess so.
00:43:00
Chris
should spray them with a water bottle. Yes. That's, that's the thing. It, yeah. It's that trained insanity that.
00:43:09
whattimeisit
If we could keep your crazy just to you, and then when you leave, the crazy's gone, that's fine.
00:43:13
Chris
Ooh, yeah.
00:43:14
whattimeisit
But that's not how it works. Your crazy spreads.
00:43:15
Chris
How do we, God. Yeah. God, that's a Ted talk. How to keep the crazy to you. Yeah.
00:43:21
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:43:22
Chris
Hmm.
00:43:23
whattimeisit
Yeah. Try to make sure the crazy dies with your career.
00:43:27
Chris
yeah
00:43:27
whattimeisit
Because...
00:43:30
whattimeisit
And my favorite of it, my favorite example, I hate how this officer acts. I become an officer. I'm never going to do that.
00:43:36
Chris
Oh my.
00:43:36
whattimeisit
Then they become exactly that officer do exactly the same things that they said they hated.
00:43:39
Chris
Yes.
00:43:42
Chris
Even a little bit more.
00:43:44
whattimeisit
Sometimes, yeah.
00:43:45
Chris
Yeah. yeah
00:43:47
whattimeisit
It's crazy. You spent years bitching about what this person does and then you do exactly what they said did.
00:43:49
Chris
Yeah.
00:43:52
Chris
Yeah.
00:43:55
Chris
Officer that might rhyme with Frogger.
00:43:55
whattimeisit
What happened? Might do.
00:44:00
Chris
ah
00:44:02
whattimeisit
exact idioms that he did.
00:44:04
Chris
Yes. ah Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:44:07
whattimeisit
I have to sit there and go, should I say this thing? Because does it make me sound like the asshole that I hate? No? Okay, check. I can move on to this.
00:44:13
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
00:44:15
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:44:15
Chris
Yeah.
00:44:17
whattimeisit
ah
00:44:21
whattimeisit
Well, that's our benefits of Kobe, guys. Here's what to say Let kids enjoy Halloween.
00:44:25
Chris
Yes.
00:44:25
whattimeisit
No trunk or treats, you jerks.
00:44:28
Chris
Wait.
00:44:29
whattimeisit
You can have a trunk or treat as an additional Halloween event.
00:44:30
Chris
Yeah. Additional. Yeah. Yeah. Not. Yeah. In replacement of.
00:44:35
whattimeisit
Yeah. Yeah.
00:44:37
Chris
Yeah.
00:44:38
whattimeisit
And then we're going to go to topic two because I'm excited for this.
00:44:41
Chris
All right.
00:44:41
whattimeisit
I had

Media Influences & Nostalgia

00:44:42
whattimeisit
homework.
00:44:43
Chris
Yeah, yeah, I gave you for Ron homework for this. So topic two, i yeah saw a different podcast did something similar. They did 10 video games to get to know me. So I said, how about you know five to 10 pieces of media to get to know you?
00:44:58
Chris
So I waited on a couple of days to work on this.
00:45:01
whattimeisit
Wait. Is it just me are we doing both of us?
00:45:02
Chris
and oh no, both of us. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:45:06
whattimeisit
I don't want to just be me.
00:45:07
Chris
and No, no, no. I've got a list.
00:45:09
whattimeisit
Okay, good.
00:45:10
Chris
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:45:11
whattimeisit
I have to start before you start. How many of yours are books? How yours are movies?
00:45:16
Chris
Oh,
00:45:20
Chris
one, two. I've got three books. One, yeah, I'm like three, three, and four for like books, movies, games.
00:45:30
whattimeisit
Wow.
00:45:33
whattimeisit
Huh.
00:45:34
Chris
Yeah.
00:45:35
whattimeisit
I'm like all books.
00:45:37
Chris
But I honestly figured that's how it would be.
00:45:41
whattimeisit
Okay.
00:45:42
Chris
Yeah. Yep.
00:45:44
whattimeisit
I think I'm gonna blow your mind with one of them because I think they're thinking I'm gonna say one thing I'm gonna say something different.
00:45:44
Chris
No, that's not sad.
00:45:47
Chris
yeah and okay sure yeah let's start you can start yeah okay
00:45:53
whattimeisit
Yeah, yeah.
00:45:56
whattimeisit
Ready to start?
00:45:59
whattimeisit
I'll go first. Kurt Vonnegut's The Cat's Cradle. This book is always, um i say always, I probably read it when I was in high school and it changed, it's it literally changed my life and how I approach things.
00:46:14
Chris
okay
00:46:22
Chris
Okay.
00:46:23
whattimeisit
um And has always been a book that I go back to and read.
00:46:29
whattimeisit
probably once every three years and would define a lot of my views on spirituality and religion.
00:46:36
Chris
o
00:46:38
whattimeisit
So that's my number one. Read this book.
00:46:43
Chris
Yeah.
00:46:43
whattimeisit
And it's it's not a long book, right? So it's, you know, easy read.
00:46:45
Chris
Yeah.
00:46:48
Chris
Okay. Yeah. And it also spurred a... ah Hot song.
00:46:55
whattimeisit
don't know which came out first. I'm assuming the book.
00:46:59
Chris
Probably the book.
00:47:00
whattimeisit
I'm assuming.
00:47:00
Chris
Yeah.
00:47:01
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:47:04
Chris
All right. So my first one. And if you want me to weed it down, I can. But I said, yeah.
00:47:10
whattimeisit
have to. No. Don't wait down. The 1990s Batman anime
00:47:11
Chris
yeah No, no. Batman, the animated series.
00:47:16
whattimeisit
series. nineteen ninety s batman era yeah i
00:47:19
Chris
Yes, the animated We watched it on Fox in the afternoons. That is, in my opinion, probably the best representation of Batman.
00:47:30
Chris
It was the most formative Batman for many of us. ah Just, yeah, it really, because you got to see the duality. You got to see the Bruce side of it. You got to see the yeah how screwed up Bruce can be at times. It was just really, it was, in my opinion, the best representation. and Yeah, Batman's been one of my favorite comic characters for years and
00:47:57
whattimeisit
I mean, it's a pretty good answer for a man who has Batman everything.
00:48:00
Chris
yeah.
00:48:03
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
00:48:04
whattimeisit
It is.
00:48:07
whattimeisit
It's maybe not the best Batman. It's the most breadth of Batman to me.
00:48:13
Chris
Yeah. Okay.
00:48:16
whattimeisit
To me, because of my age, the Michael Keaton Batman.
00:48:22
whattimeisit
I know.
00:48:22
Chris
I liked the Keaton, but it just wasn't. Yeah. Didn't hook me.
00:48:26
whattimeisit
But it was really my first. I had seen Adam West Batman. I wasn't a DC Comics kid, so I didn't read Batman.
00:48:32
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
00:48:34
whattimeisit
So Michael Keaton was the first Batman fan.
00:48:36
Chris
Yeah. I can get that.
00:48:37
whattimeisit
But I appreciate the Kevin Conroy Batman.
00:48:42
Chris
Mm-hmm.
00:48:42
whattimeisit
So I'm all about it. I'm to pick another book, shockingly.
00:48:47
Chris
OK. Yeah?
00:48:48
whattimeisit
ah And i I don't know going to pick the whole series. I think I'm just going the first one.
00:48:54
Chris
OK.
00:48:55
whattimeisit
which is Frank Herbert's Dune.
00:48:58
Chris
Oh, that's what, six novels, seven novels?
00:48:59
whattimeisit
and has
00:49:02
whattimeisit
He died writing the seventh one, I think.
00:49:05
Chris
OK. Yeah.
00:49:07
whattimeisit
His son kind of took up the mantle years and years later.
00:49:10
Chris
Yeah.
00:49:13
whattimeisit
It's a tough toss-up for me um between Dude and Asimov.
00:49:19
Chris
OK.
00:49:20
whattimeisit
But my love of that kind of futurism and sci-fi stems from those two books. I had to choose one. And think if I was to choose one, love Dune a little bit more.
00:49:32
Chris
Yeah.
00:49:33
whattimeisit
And just that has shaped whenever I'm take a break from reading history, hardcore, deep history books, I go back to sci-fi more than fantasy, I would say.
00:49:41
Chris
h
00:49:48
whattimeisit
But a fantasy book will be on this list.
00:49:50
Chris
Yeah.
00:49:52
Chris
Yeah. Dune's a good pull.
00:49:55
whattimeisit
like it's like It's a great book. It's a hard read.
00:49:57
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
00:49:59
whattimeisit
But I think that's...
00:50:00
Chris
Isn't a isn't dune like, 500 pages or something.
00:50:05
whattimeisit
Let me see.
00:50:11
whattimeisit
have to go through and find my copy of Dune. There it is. In my Dune section of my library.
00:50:19
whattimeisit
It's short of 500.
00:50:21
Chris
and Okay.
00:50:24
whattimeisit
Well, it's like 474.
00:50:29
Chris
Okay.
00:50:30
whattimeisit
So, you know, it's...
00:50:32
Chris
hu
00:50:34
whattimeisit
But I love that that that style of futuristic sci-fi.
00:50:39
Chris
yeah
00:50:39
whattimeisit
Not just robots in space, but actually like politics and what things could look like.
00:50:44
Chris
yeah i mean that's a huge yeah that's a huge part the dune ethos cool all right uh my number two is a game destiny yeah yeah destiny is the first like really guess it's an mo
00:50:48
whattimeisit
Yeah. Yeah.
00:50:52
whattimeisit
Yep. Yep.
00:50:57
whattimeisit
Okay.
00:51:00
whattimeisit
Makes total sense for you.
00:51:10
whattimeisit
so silly.
00:51:10
Chris
not really RPG. It's an m MO shooter.
00:51:13
whattimeisit
Yeah, it's...
00:51:14
Chris
and memo i don't know.
00:51:16
Chris
But
00:51:16
whattimeisit
almost its own thing because it's not like you're interacting with a lot of people unless you want like yeah yeah it's its own destiny is its own thing
00:51:20
Chris
unless you want to. Yeah.
00:51:26
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. but I mean, the the story of Destiny, the characters, I mean, because of Destiny, I joined clan.
00:51:38
Chris
And i still discord message with five of them regularly to this day from you like first play destiny seven eight years ago now and i mean that you really for us still even though it's a dying game i still hop on every now and again knock some stuff out yeah it's just been one of those everlasting gobstoppers of i wish there were books i really wish there were books there's fanfic
00:52:07
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:52:09
Chris
But there's not like, and I mean, I've got like their grimoires, but like not an actual novelization of destiny.
00:52:10
whattimeisit
Right.
00:52:16
whattimeisit
Feels like it should have been...
00:52:18
Chris
Bungie, if you want me to do that, say the word.
00:52:21
whattimeisit
Should have read graphic novels, at the very least.
00:52:23
Chris
There are actually some, but there's ah there's only like two or three.
00:52:25
whattimeisit
Oh, okay.
00:52:27
Chris
There's not. Yeah. Yeah. So, but yeah.
00:52:33
whattimeisit
I'm going to go back to a book.
00:52:34
Chris
Yeah.
00:52:36
whattimeisit
ah Shockingly. I do have book that's on this list.
00:52:37
Chris
Yep. Okay.
00:52:40
whattimeisit
I'm going to go back to a book. Shockingly. And this book, to me...
00:52:47
whattimeisit
It just sets my comedic tone life.
00:52:50
Chris
OK.
00:52:52
whattimeisit
And that is Douglas Adams, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
00:52:56
Chris
Oh.
00:52:57
whattimeisit
um it's just such a classic dry british humor i really grew up and loved that that style of humor and it came from that book i read it well i was way too early when i read it didn't understand it really and
00:52:57
Chris
Yeah.
00:53:07
Chris
Mm hmm. Mm
00:53:16
Chris
hmm. Yeah.
00:53:19
Chris
Got to have a towel.
00:53:20
whattimeisit
Got out of town. probably the first time I ever dressed up in costume as an adult when I had choice of what I could dress up as, I dressed up as Arthur from Hitchhiker's to the Galaxy.
00:53:32
whattimeisit
you know, for Halloween.
00:53:33
Chris
Okay. Yeah.
00:53:35
whattimeisit
yeah
00:53:35
Chris
I've never read the book. I've seen the movie.
00:53:38
whattimeisit
Oh, don't read that. Oh, God. movies are bad.
00:53:44
whattimeisit
The movies are bad.
00:53:46
Chris
Yeah.
00:53:47
whattimeisit
Yeah.
00:53:47
Chris
Wait, are there more than one?
00:53:49
whattimeisit
Oh, there's been... At least two chances it tries to make the movie I can think of.
00:53:55
Chris
Okay.
00:53:57
whattimeisit
Not good. Yeah.
00:53:58
Chris
Hmm. Hmm.
00:54:00
whattimeisit
Read the
00:54:01
Chris
yeah Oh, okay. ah My third one is a book. um It's Spellfire by ed Greenwood.
00:54:13
Chris
That was literally the first D&D novel I ever read. Way back in like middle school or something. And I was like, this is a neat world. And this, I want to learn more about this.
00:54:27
whattimeisit
but
00:54:28
Chris
And that's what got me into the Forgotten Realms.
00:54:31
whattimeisit
You're chomping my thunder, but mine's different.
00:54:33
Chris
OK. All right.
00:54:34
whattimeisit
Because my fourth one is Dragonlance.
00:54:37
Chris
Oh, nice.
00:54:38
whattimeisit
Because that was the first D&D series I read was the Dragonlance books.
00:54:38
Chris
Yeah.
00:54:42
Chris
OK.
00:54:43
whattimeisit
I freaking loved them.
00:54:44
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
00:54:46
whattimeisit
Yep.
00:54:46
Chris
Yeah.
00:54:47
whattimeisit
Loved those books. So, yeah.
00:54:49
Chris
Yeah,
00:54:51
whattimeisit
That was my first introduction. Oh, I was probably... was in middle school as well when this came out. So, yeah.
00:54:56
Chris
that's.
00:55:00
whattimeisit
But yeah, D&D books. I mean,
00:55:01
Chris
yeah that'
00:55:04
whattimeisit
great world of writing. It was such a... a um like i i just I knew what D&D was. I was lucky my dad and mom were kind of nerds, so I knew what D&D was.
00:55:18
whattimeisit
But those books, like all of them, were like, oh, you can make stories out of this.
00:55:24
Chris
Yeah.
00:55:25
whattimeisit
you know, which was so cool to me.
00:55:26
Chris
Yeah. yeah Yeah. yeah And it was yeah just that world building and seeing that it was totally fleshed out. It wasn't just ah Oh yeah, there's a place. And it's like, no, there's people and interactions. And yeah, it's an almost living environment.
00:55:47
whattimeisit
Yeah, I agree.
00:55:48
Chris
Yeah.
00:55:48
whattimeisit
Well, I just went to four, so it's your four.
00:55:51
Chris
Okay. um So my four is... i was going to say Star Wars just in general, but that's just too big.
00:56:03
Chris
um Honestly, I mean, that... A New Hope was, you know, of course, the first one I saw and everything. But I think Jedi was the one that really hooked me, hooked me.
00:56:17
whattimeisit
Really? Jedi?
00:56:17
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:56:19
whattimeisit
I'm an Empire man myself.
00:56:21
Chris
ah yeah Yeah, I know that.
00:56:23
whattimeisit
Ooh.
00:56:24
Chris
Yeah. I mean, I liked Empire, but don't know. Jedi... it was the growth of Luke, and now he's like a badass.
00:56:35
Chris
And... can kind of do things, even though he kind of knows. He doesn't know exactly what he's doing, but he's standing up for what he thinks is right.
00:56:47
Chris
And you get to see the ultimate conclusion of what the rebellion has been trying to do for all these years. And yeah.
00:56:57
whattimeisit
It is the movie that gives you hope.
00:56:59
Chris
Yeah. Unfortunately, that hope was squandered. But yeah.
00:57:05
whattimeisit
It's not if you don't think about it.
00:57:07
Chris
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And we got to see a green lightsaber. That was cool.
00:57:12
whattimeisit
It's true.
00:57:13
Chris
Yeah.
00:57:14
whattimeisit
Did introduce us in the world of there are mother, different mother, mother, other colors. Yeah.
00:57:20
Chris
Yeah, yeah. Other colors. um Neat space fights, dog fights and all. So yeah. Yeah.
00:57:32
whattimeisit
I really struggled with my fifth choice because obviously I love history and it's hard to pick.
00:57:35
Chris
OK.
00:57:40
Chris
Yeah.
00:57:46
whattimeisit
like It's hard for me to remember what book got me into history.
00:57:51
Chris
Yeah.
00:57:52
whattimeisit
And this is kind of, it's not it's not a book.
00:57:58
Chris
Yeah.
00:57:59
whattimeisit
It's not quite what happened correctly, but I'm picking the movie 1776.
00:58:07
Chris
OK.
00:58:08
whattimeisit
um When I was in middle school, saw that movie, and then my eighth grade teacher, U.S.
00:58:13
Chris
Yeah.
00:58:14
whattimeisit
history teacher, he made us like... recreate the constitutional convention in class and brought history to life for me in a way that i never had before and that movie always makes me think of that event so it's not a history book i understand that it's not a historically accurate movie but it is a something that sparked my love of history for some
00:58:30
Chris
yeah
00:58:41
whattimeisit
Good or bad, it's caused my life to be full of history books.
00:58:47
whattimeisit
Because it's...
00:58:47
Chris
Well, mean, histories. i mean, it's it's literally where we've come from. It's learning from past mistakes. It's seeing some of the repetitions that have happened year after year. And yeah.
00:59:03
whattimeisit
Yeah, it's just... My... my prachant for reading history books as ah as my first choice like i i really basically read three genres of books history and it's not defined by one era of history fantasy and sci-fi it's about it um i find all other books to be a waste of my time
00:59:22
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:59:34
Chris
Well, my number five is another novel, Jurassic Park.
00:59:41
whattimeisit
Oh, such a good pick.
00:59:42
Chris
i And
00:59:44
whattimeisit
Oh, I didn't even think of it. The book was so amazing.
00:59:47
Chris
the book was amazing. So much better than the movie, folks. Please read the book.
00:59:50
whattimeisit
Oh, man.
00:59:51
Chris
um I was I mean, I think we were every kid from our generation was a dinosaur kid at one point.
00:59:53
whattimeisit
Oh,
00:59:59
whattimeisit
yeah. Oh, yeah. We were...
01:00:01
Chris
And i mean, Jurassic park just cemented it. I mean, that was what at the time i was like, I'm going to go be a paleontologist when I, you know, go to college and all that. My wife comes in and shaking her head at me because yeah.
01:00:16
Chris
Um, Yeah, she's saying not every kid because she didn't like dinosaurs. Something wrong with her.
01:00:22
whattimeisit
It's just a Western Shore person.
01:00:22
Chris
ah
01:00:23
whattimeisit
We don't have opinions.
01:00:23
Chris
Yeah. But I mean, just Jurassic Park was just, yeah.
01:00:25
whattimeisit
this That was amazing book. That book...
01:00:29
Chris
but it thats It blended the science and just the fascination of the big giant animals. Yeah. Yeah, in 93, I think.
01:00:36
whattimeisit
So the movie came out, of what, 93, 92? Yeah, the book came out. I remember i reading the book probably the year before that.
01:00:48
Chris
Yeah. yeah
01:00:48
whattimeisit
Which was like amazing for like timing for me that I like finished the book and I was like, oh, there's this movie out now.
01:00:54
Chris
Yeah.
01:00:54
whattimeisit
my God. That book is i such a great pick. I'm so annoyed that I didn't put it on my list.
01:01:00
Chris
I read that book in three days.
01:01:03
whattimeisit
Wow, I don't think I read it that fast, but yeah.
01:01:05
Chris
Yeah. ah Three days. Yep.
01:01:08
whattimeisit
that That is such an amazing pick.
01:01:10
Chris
Yeah.
01:01:12
whattimeisit
I'm going to pick the only horror book... that I still read and that is Stephen King's The Stand.
01:01:20
Chris
OK.
01:01:26
whattimeisit
I had a love affair with Stephen King books for a long time and for some reason just kind of fell out of it. I don't really have a good excuse or why but I just said like I said now now I only read history fantasy or Levi but when I was a kid Stephen King The Stand and that is a big book to read when you're in
01:01:33
Chris
Yeah. Too spooky for me.
01:01:38
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
01:01:46
whattimeisit
Because I had read The Talisman first, which was also a giant, massive book. but I was probably seventh grade when read The Stand.
01:01:55
Chris
Okay.
01:01:56
whattimeisit
Yeah, that's a big book. It's great.
01:02:00
Chris
Yeah. It's a, let's see. Oh my gosh. The complete uncut edition of Stephen King's, the stand is 1,152 pages.
01:02:10
whattimeisit
Yeah, I would have said a thousand pages. It's a big book.
01:02:12
Chris
oh Wow.
01:02:13
whattimeisit
Yeah, yeah.
01:02:14
Chris
Yeah. I mean, that's more than some trilogies. Um,
01:02:18
whattimeisit
Yeah, yeah.
01:02:22
Chris
um My next one is another game. Final Fantasy IV.
01:02:30
whattimeisit
You and your final thing. What's one for?
01:02:31
Chris
For... that Well, for us, it was Final Fantasy II.
01:02:37
Chris
Yeah, I know it's confusing. In Japan, it was the fourth for US.
01:02:38
whattimeisit
is too hard for me.
01:02:40
Chris
They called it the second one. It was the second one released in the US. But that was like... I think that was the... Well, other than like playing stuff on the computer and all. But that was the first. and I mean, Dragon Quest on the ne or Dragon Warrior on the Nintendo.
01:02:56
Chris
But I picked up Final Fantasy IV as a rental. I was like, there's this just plain red cover. that there's The T is a sword. This looks neat. And then, yeah, it just the world building, the class system and all. i was like, this is this is fun.
01:03:14
Chris
And ever since I've been a Final Fantasy fan.
01:03:19
whattimeisit
I it's a good pull. i I did realize I have to put a movie on this that if I didn't put it, it would disingenuous to me.
01:03:27
Chris
OK. OK.
01:03:28
whattimeisit
This movie is 50 years old.
01:03:30
Chris
okay So in 75.
01:03:31
whattimeisit
Right? Is it 50 years old?
01:03:33
Chris
Yeah. Bubba.
01:03:35
whattimeisit
I believe it's 50 years old. I believe it's just now. so Yeah, I think it was been 75. This movie is the scariest movie that's ever been made. No movie has ever had an effect on my life like this movie did.
01:03:50
Chris
yeah
01:03:51
whattimeisit
I watched this movie when I was way too young. And I'm still obsessively watching it.
01:03:54
Chris
ah but
01:03:56
whattimeisit
And this movie is, of course, the greatest horror movie of all time. Jaws.
01:04:01
Chris
Yep. Yeah.
01:04:04
whattimeisit
No movie has had an effect on my life like Jaws.
01:04:07
Chris
Yeah. I'm going to need a bigger boat.
01:04:11
whattimeisit
We're going need a bigger boat or stay the fuck of the water.
01:04:17
Chris
ah Yeah. Yeah.
01:04:21
Chris
What were they? Yeah. who Who wrote Jaws?
01:04:27
whattimeisit
Is it Bletchley?
01:04:29
Chris
Yeah. don't know.
01:04:30
whattimeisit
David Bletchley?
01:04:31
Chris
I want to know what trauma happened to him to cause.
01:04:35
whattimeisit
I'd have to go upstairs. I have my copy of the book.
01:04:36
Chris
Hmm.
01:04:39
Chris
Yeah.
01:04:39
whattimeisit
The book's... kind of better than the movie but the movie is so amazing that's yeah yeah yeah
01:04:42
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. Oh yeah. It's a great movie.
01:04:48
Chris
Yeah. yeah Yeah. It looks hokey at some points and everything, but it's kind of holds up.
01:04:55
whattimeisit
oh yeah there guys you're invited being invaded no it's practical effects practical effects just pulled up and because it's shot the way it shot it holds up better if that makes sense
01:04:55
Chris
Oh God. There's danger.
01:05:10
Chris
Oh, totally.
01:05:12
whattimeisit
Oh, she's going crazy.
01:05:14
Chris
ah Yeah, somebody walked in the neighborhood. Imagine that.
01:05:17
whattimeisit
Oh, man.
01:05:17
Chris
Yeah, it's also a good pull. um All right. My next one is.
01:05:26
Chris
Calvin and Hobbes by Watterson.
01:05:30
Chris
that
01:05:31
whattimeisit
so much better at this than I am.
01:05:35
Chris
I. What just part of it is I looked at like my bookshelf and was like, you know what? What books are on my shelf and then, you know, what stuff is worn and things like that. I mean, i have read and reread Calvin and Hobbes so many times over the years. I mean, it's just such a great series. Yeah.
01:05:55
Chris
If I had had a son, my wife hates this. It would have been Calvin.
01:06:00
whattimeisit
His brother was named Hobbes.
01:06:00
Chris
But.
01:06:04
Chris
But yeah, it's just. Yeah. ah The humor in it, the relatability, you know, it's just, I've always liked Calvin and Hobbes.
01:06:12
whattimeisit
It was perfect time for when we were kids.
01:06:14
Chris
Yeah.
01:06:15
whattimeisit
It was perfect.
01:06:15
Chris
Yep. Yeah.
01:06:18
whattimeisit
So I'm going to pick a fantasy book that is to be the one you're thinking of.
01:06:21
Chris
Okay.
01:06:24
Chris
Yeah.
01:06:25
whattimeisit
This is the one I think you think I'm going to say Lord of the Rings because it's probably the fantasy book I read the most.
01:06:29
Chris
Okay. Yeah.
01:06:31
whattimeisit
But the fantasy book that started it all, really, for me, was the Xenet series by Piers Anthony.
01:06:31
Chris
Mm-hmm.
01:06:38
Chris
the Xanath series.
01:06:40
whattimeisit
Yes, when I was very young, my mother bought these books for me.
01:06:41
Chris
Okay. Yeah.
01:06:47
Chris
Yeah.
01:06:48
whattimeisit
And it was just kind of a tradition when I was a kid. I read... I'm sure i stopped at some point and the series continued, but I read those books obsessively as a kid from, I don't know.
01:06:59
Chris
yeah
01:07:02
whattimeisit
I want to say I was eight years old when I read the first one. That can't be right, but I could be right because I was a book reading nerd really young. So um that book series, like of the Rings,
01:07:19
whattimeisit
My love for that came later in life. Xanath was the early. It was more kid-friendly. More for me.
01:07:28
Chris
Well, I mean, the movie really cemented cemented it for you. Yeah.
01:07:35
whattimeisit
I'm really surprised they never made a Piers Anthony movie about Xanath. It's weird.
01:07:40
Chris
yeah
01:07:42
whattimeisit
I don't think it's as popular as I think it is in my head because I read it.
01:07:45
Chris
I mean, it's pretty popular. Oh my God.
01:07:47
whattimeisit
Yeah.
01:07:48
Chris
There's 48 books.
01:07:49
whattimeisit
Yeah, there's a ton of them.
01:07:51
Chris
Geez.
01:07:53
whattimeisit
He was like one of these Stephen King guys who was putting out like three books a year at one point.
01:07:53
Chris
Yeah.
01:07:56
whattimeisit
like
01:07:56
Chris
Wow. Yeah.
01:07:57
whattimeisit
Yeah.
01:07:57
Chris
That's a, That's impressive.
01:07:59
whattimeisit
Yeah.
01:08:01
Chris
um
01:08:04
whattimeisit
What number we at? Seven?
01:08:06
Chris
ah No, eight, right?
01:08:07
whattimeisit
Eight? Oh.
01:08:09
Chris
Yeah.
01:08:10
whattimeisit
Oh, boy.
01:08:10
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. um I think, yeah, math. Yeah, math eight. hu um Yeah, so my eight, um I tried to think of a good embodiment, and I almost went with a movie, but I went with one the newer animated versions. And there's, think it's on it's probably on Disney Plus, but the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
01:08:38
Chris
It's like a newer telling of Pete's first couple of years and everything. I think it just, I've always loved Spider-Man. It was the nerdy kid who got some powers, but still stayed the down to earth nerdy kid. And yeah, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man definitely gets that.
01:08:59
whattimeisit
I have a comic book as well.
01:09:01
Chris
Oh.
01:09:02
whattimeisit
And it's a comic book that I loved as a kid because of... I'm really thinking of this as the stuff that shaped me as a person.
01:09:13
Chris
Yeah.
01:09:13
whattimeisit
Not so much me as the now, but how it led to that.
01:09:15
Chris
OK. Yeah. yeah Yeah, that's a good poll.
01:09:18
whattimeisit
And that's Captain America. and I'm talking like the 80s comic books, Captain America, Solo. um Something about Captain America...
01:09:30
Chris
yeah
01:09:31
whattimeisit
appeal to my dumb brain that is willing to do a stupid job like be a firefighter for his whole life yeah it really is it's just yeah he is the boy scout
01:09:38
Chris
That's the continuation of the Boy Scout.
01:09:47
Chris
Yeah, i mean, he's, yeah, Cap.
01:09:50
whattimeisit
which is why i don't like some of the newer stuff where they mess with him being a boy scout
01:09:55
Chris
Yeah, yeah, yeah. When you boil it down, Cap is, he's not just the super soldier, but he's just a super person.
01:10:04
whattimeisit
mm-hmm yep yep and now i gotta like really think about my 10 because your your list is better than mine it's more annoying it is you said that that was eight or was that eight or that we were going okay so i got two more all right because there's two three things i gotta put on this list i haven't done and no no it's 10.
01:10:05
Chris
Yeah, yeah.
01:10:15
Chris
no No, no, no, it's not. We've got two more, right?
01:10:21
Chris
That was eight. Yeah, we've got nine and that's fine. You can have bonus. That's fine.
01:10:32
Chris
So my number nine is the Kale series by Paul Kemp. It started out as just like this a novella in a series in the forgotten realms and then he built off the character he did a trilogy and then a follow-up trilogy and he so should do a third trilogy and stupid wizards of the coast cut it and made him jam it into one crappy novel that he still rants about to this day but it was just i a lot of the characters aren't great people but they try to be better people than what they are and i think it's just a really good
01:11:15
Chris
representation of just they are dealt a really shitty hand and they're trying to do the best they can with it and at the end of the day are they a great person no but did they do a lot of good stuff yes i just think it's yeah and i mean to this day it's social media but i'm quote unquote facebook friends with the author and i've had discourse back and forth with him it's just pretty neat yeah
01:11:40
whattimeisit
ah That's pretty awesome. That's pretty awesome.
01:11:46
whattimeisit
I have to pick a video game because I feel like it'd be crazy for me not to pick a video game.
01:11:50
Chris
yeah
01:11:52
whattimeisit
And it is tough.
01:11:55
whattimeisit
Like... My number... the The answer that pops in my head and keeps coming back to my head... It's also a Bungie game, which makes it kind of crazy.
01:12:04
Chris
yeah yeah that's what i figured you're gonna say
01:12:05
whattimeisit
I have to pick... Halo Combat Evolved.
01:12:11
whattimeisit
No game... Up to... That game... That was the first time, like... my friends and I would put Xboxes together in in a house and play at Halo. We would get together. We made it a thing to play Halo.
01:12:27
Chris
Yeah.
01:12:27
whattimeisit
And you know we played StarCraft together. We played other games, but there was just something. And like Halo reached out to groups of friends who I had my nerdy computer friends and then I had my jock friends and we all played Halo.
01:12:41
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
01:12:42
whattimeisit
um
01:12:42
Chris
I mean, it was, yeah.
01:12:43
whattimeisit
It was such a phenomenon.
01:12:43
Chris
I, yeah, unfortunately I missed out on Halo since I was, uh, I've been a Sony guy from day one, but now they're re-releasing it.
01:12:48
whattimeisit
PlayStation 3.
01:12:53
whattimeisit
I heard that.
01:12:54
Chris
Yeah. So I will finally get to play Halo.
01:12:57
whattimeisit
It's going to feel so bad to you because it's so old.
01:13:01
Chris
it's special it's I think it's in Unreal 4 or 5 or whatever, so it should be easy to play.
01:13:07
whattimeisit
Yeah.
01:13:08
Chris
But...
01:13:08
whattimeisit
It's just that game changed everything for gaming for me.
01:13:14
Chris
Yeah.
01:13:15
whattimeisit
It's got to be Kalo.
01:13:16
Chris
Yeah. Yeah, yeah see, I was torn on my number 10. um I was going to say one of the games that came before it in the series, but ah I had to go with Baldur's Gate 3.
01:13:34
whattimeisit
Such a good answer.
01:13:35
Chris
Because it wraps up. yeah It's the video game. It's the D&D. It's the ah novel backstory part of it. But it's so approachable. And it's just.
01:13:48
Chris
Yeah.
01:13:49
whattimeisit
So well done.
01:13:50
Chris
Yeah.
01:13:50
Chris
yeah Yeah. It's, you know, chef's kiss. Amazing.
01:13:50
whattimeisit
So well done.
01:13:54
whattimeisit
It's... Baldur's Gate 3... To me is right now that things can change, but it is the ultimate of that genre of games.
01:14:03
Chris
Yeah.
01:14:08
Chris
Yeah.
01:14:09
whattimeisit
I've not enjoyed an RPG of any type as much as I enjoyed World's Gate 3.
01:14:13
Chris
Yeah. Oh, absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. And I mean, to the point, and you can tell that it's so, don't know, out there that Wizards of the Coast, but theyre I saw something other day, they've got like a new, like, you know, they're reintroducing the Forgotten Realms in D&D.
01:14:17
whattimeisit
And it's...
01:14:33
Chris
And CarLac is on the front cover.
01:14:36
whattimeisit
That's nice.
01:14:37
Chris
Yeah, i mean, it's pretty amazing.
01:14:40
whattimeisit
Yeah. Yeah, that's such a good pick.
01:14:46
whattimeisit
We're at the 10th.
01:14:47
Chris
This is it.
01:14:48
whattimeisit
The final pick.
01:14:48
Chris
Yeah, this is number 10. Yeah.
01:14:50
whattimeisit
The last hurrah.
01:14:53
Chris
yeah
01:14:57
whattimeisit
If you were to get to know me, if you wanted to come up to me and have something to talk about, hmm.
01:15:06
whattimeisit
I think you'd have to...
01:15:10
Chris
It would clearly be the Reese Witherspoon classic.
01:15:16
whattimeisit
Well, I wanted to say a history book.
01:15:18
Chris
Yeah.
01:15:21
whattimeisit
And I think it's got to be Band of Brothers.
01:15:24
Chris
oh that is such a good pull.
01:15:25
whattimeisit
Stephen Ambrose.
01:15:29
whattimeisit
it's It's a very approachable history book.
01:15:29
Chris
yeah
01:15:31
whattimeisit
Yes, there are some issues with... his version of things but they're not wrong it's just a version um but that book and the series that it spawned of course is amazing but uh that book is such a good starter place for someone to read yeah gotta go with banner brothers it's probably and as i'm looking at it in my shelf right now it's got a lot of bends and breaks in the spine so
01:15:35
Chris
Yeah. Right. Yeah.
01:15:43
Chris
Yeah.
01:15:49
Chris
Yeah.
01:15:52
Chris
Yeah. Wow.
01:16:00
Chris
Yeah. That's a good indication.
01:16:03
whattimeisit
Yep.
01:16:03
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. Look, now people get to know us.
01:16:08
whattimeisit
Yeah. Yeah. Well, you sold me a 10. I thought
01:16:10
Chris
I thought Boulder's Gate was my 10th.
01:16:13
whattimeisit
it was your knife.
01:16:13
Chris
Did I admit that was my knife?
01:16:15
whattimeisit
thought.
01:16:15
Chris
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
01:16:15
whattimeisit
OK.
01:16:18
Chris
Yeah, I've got ten.
01:16:19
whattimeisit
All right.
01:16:20
Chris
Oh, it's because number four muddled together between the two.
01:16:20
whattimeisit
That's fair.
01:16:23
Chris
Yeah.
01:16:24
whattimeisit
That's fair.
01:16:25
Chris
Yeah.
01:16:26
whattimeisit
Yes, but now you get to know us and go read all those books I suggested.
01:16:26
Chris
was about to say. Yeah. Yes.
01:16:30
whattimeisit
i almost put Time Bandits on that list.
01:16:30
Chris
Yes.
01:16:32
whattimeisit
I love that movie. almost put Monty Python Holy Grail.
01:16:33
Chris
Yeah.
01:16:36
Chris
Yeah.
01:16:37
whattimeisit
Such a phenomenal list.
01:16:37
Chris
I almost put Bloodsport.
01:16:40
whattimeisit
Spaceballs almost made the list.
01:16:42
Chris
Yeah.
01:16:44
whattimeisit
There was...
01:16:45
Chris
Neil Gaiman's North mythology.
01:16:45
whattimeisit
There was...
01:16:48
whattimeisit
don't know what we're supposed to do with Neo Gaming anymore.
01:16:49
Chris
Yeah. Yeah, I know.
01:16:53
Chris
I know.
01:16:55
whattimeisit
It's not being convicted of anything. That's all I can say.
01:16:57
Chris
Yeah.
01:16:58
whattimeisit
I almost put Wheel Time on there.
01:17:01
Chris
Yeah, that's a.
01:17:01
whattimeisit
such an amazing Such an amazing series. It starts well, has a shitty middle, and ends okay.
01:17:06
Chris
Yeah. Yeah. I almost put Deadpool and Wolverine.
01:17:08
whattimeisit
Game of Thrones.
01:17:10
whattimeisit
Yeah. Yeah.
01:17:13
Chris
Yeah. ah I started to put like some music on there, and I was like, no, this is just.
01:17:19
whattimeisit
Music doesn't define me.
01:17:20
Chris
No. Oh, yeah.
01:17:22
whattimeisit
There's people that, and it's totally fine that it does, but it's just not me.
01:17:23
Chris
Yeah. yeah Yeah, I like listening to music and stuff, but it's not just the, yeah. Yeah, if somebody gets to know me, I mean, yeah.
01:17:30
whattimeisit
Yeah.
01:17:33
Chris
It's not like I got a bunch of vinyls in my office. I've got a bunch of comic book stuff, and yeah.
01:17:39
whattimeisit
I have a history books, anxie books, and sci-fi books.
01:17:41
Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
01:17:43
whattimeisit
And a bunch of nerd shit.
01:17:47
whattimeisit
Well, folks, we don't know what time we're ending this.
01:17:51
Chris
yeah it's uh yeah we have no it's it yeah it is yeah i'm sure neil degrasse tyson has something to say about that but yeah yeah enjoy your extra hour of light maybe no whatever yeah yeah enjoy your fake time

01:18:17

01:18:22
whattimeisit
