The Goal Post is back after another exciting week in the CFL.

Damien and Patrick start off the show by breaking down each game from Week 2 of the CFL season. The Blue Bombers still look like a class above most of the league, the Alouettes defence is on fire, while the Stampeders stayed undefeated, as did the Roughriders.

The Boys then issue another edition of The Goal Post 3 Stars of the Week - highlighting the three best performances of the week, along with some honourable mentions. It was a tough decision with so many impressive performances on offence. Next, they re-shuffle the CFL power rankings to take into account Week 2 wins and losses, before moving to Week 3.

They quickly preview each game on the Week 3 slate, including moving lines and quick thoughts, before giving out their Week 3 picks - The Podcast is 5-2 through 2 weeks!

Enjoy!

Welcome and CFL Week Overview

00:00:24
Speaker
Alright, welcome back to another episode of The Goalpost. Coming at you after another week in the CFL, another week into summer.
00:00:35
Speaker
And it's going accordingly. We've got some great games, some great talent on display. Just a good weekend of CFL football, Patrick. How's it going? Good, Damian. Another week in the books here in the CFL season.
00:00:49
Speaker
Nothing too crazy that we we saw last week, but I mean, it's it's starting to ramp up. I think we're really starting to... Get some pretenders, getting to see the contenders, just going to, you know, lay of the land of what's going to kind of go down this season.
00:01:04
Speaker
um I know it's still early in the season and teams still have plenty, plenty of time to figure things out. But I think you're going to see these first five weeks or so, really just the teams who are going to be a class above.
00:01:17
Speaker
Teams are going to be kind of looking to get out of the middle of the pack. And then the team's kind of the basement dwellers. You you know what I'm talking about. So ah this week, I think, proved to be a test for some and some statements made

Ontario Teams' Early Struggles

00:01:30
Speaker
for others. But yeah, it's another week in the books here in the CFL season. And it's just nice to just get back in the flow of football on every single weekend.
00:01:38
Speaker
Yeah, it's ah it's been a tough start for the province of Ontario. I think the province of Ontario is a combined owen six to start the CFL season. Of course, after we talk about how good the East is going to be in our CFL preview, just have to stick it right back to us. But there's lots of time, like you mentioned.
00:01:57
Speaker
um You know, I got out to my first game of the season, our Argos home opener. We'll get to that. But nice to get back in the seats. Lots of people there. um So yeah, good weekend for it.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs BC Lions Recap

00:02:06
Speaker
um But it all started back on Thursday night where you talk about being a class above and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers just reminded everybody pretty much who was watching that they are a class above in this league.
00:02:19
Speaker
ah Blue Bombers 34, Lions 20. A lot of places to start in this one, but I think it has to begin at quarterback with a very, very big who's back of the week with Chris Strebler.
00:02:33
Speaker
Guy goes 15 24, 246 yards, three touchdowns. Everybody was always like, can this guy actually throw the football? Was a big rusher, led the CFL in touchdowns last year from being a short yardage quarterback. And he absolutely stepped up and just diced this Lions defense.
00:02:52
Speaker
Yeah, no no legs necessary for Chris Strebler in this one. It was all done with his arm. It was just an impressive performance. You know, BC was favored in this game over the over the Blue Bombers, obviously without Zach Caleros to start week we two for them, I guess it is, because they had the week one bye.
00:03:10
Speaker
I just did not see this game unfolding the way it did. ah i was at a concert for this game, so i was kind of score checking, keeping an update. I took the Lions as well, and I was just shocked.
00:03:22
Speaker
I was just shocked. Every time I would update it every 15 minutes or so, The game was kind of just getting out of hand, and I was thinking, all right, BC will wake up, BC will wake up. They only had 10 points at half, and it just did not look good on the scoreboard. I didn't have the flow of the game, but then I'm just looking at these Nathan Rourke stats, and he got out quarterbacks by Chris Strebler, who has been a backup in this league for a bit now.
00:03:46
Speaker
um He obviously had his... Claim to fame a couple of years ago with with the Bombers when they won their great cup. But this was a nice performance from Streffler. He just did what he had to do. He only threw the ball 24 times, 15 completions, 246 yards, and three touchdowns in the air. it was a very impressive performance and just...
00:04:07
Speaker
Like you said, it was just the Bombers letting people know we are here. Don't worry. We may have lost some guys in the offseason, but this is still the team to beat in the West. And they kind of showed up and kind of, you know, gave a wake up call to BC. I think you could say just such a classic Winnipeg start.
00:04:24
Speaker
I feel like I've seen that that game script a thousand times where, you know, it's a close matchup, a close spread. And then they'll start the game and just march the ball down your throat for a touchdown within the first three minutes. Like they go 80 yards in four plays and then a 27 yard touchdown to Dembski.
00:04:45
Speaker
They get two and out on on the lines. Then they get an interception on the next line's possession. They get a field goal and then just boom, you're down 10 nothing within like five minutes of this game starting.
00:04:58
Speaker
And that just kind of killed the Lions. Like they got in a hole early on defense and offense. The Bombers held Rourke to six passing yards in the first seven attempts in the first quarter.
00:05:09
Speaker
They just seem to be absolutely ready for this game, whether that's having a week one by really showing while the Lions had to travel to Winnipeg. But even when BC was able to find positive plays, like they did intercept Strebler once, they wouldn't score points on it.
00:05:27
Speaker
And every time they showed life and were able to get points, ah the Bombers responded every time. Like BC goes down at the end of the first half to go and get a touchdown. Bombers say, okay, we'll open the second half with a seven play 108 yard TD scoring drive. And just every time they were able to get something ah the Bombers snapped back and and kind of threw it back in their face.
00:05:51
Speaker
Yeah, it's the it's the sign of a true champion. Just you know not letting up when they have the lead. ah Timely responses when the other team gets points or a turnover. And Winnipeg said, yeah, we are still the class of this league, or especially in the West.
00:06:06
Speaker
ah We'll see what's going on with those Argos in the East. We'll see what's going on over there. But yeah, it was the offense was great. um you know We also got it should highlight Matthew Peterson with over 130 yards on the ground.
00:06:19
Speaker
A touchdown as well. It was just... of Perfect game from him. ah But the defense, the defense of the Bombers was was amazing against the Lions. Marquise Bridges, two interceptions in this game.
00:06:31
Speaker
One came off Jeremiah Massoli. And it was just it was just very good. ah Tony Jones led them led the Bombers with nine tackles. And then obviously Willie Jefferson. I mean, this guy every single year is just...
00:06:44
Speaker
you know, a candidate ah for defense player of the year, just one of the best in the league. It doesn't always show up on the stat line, but he Rourke was just uncomfortable for most of this game. Every every time I watch back these highlights, Rourke felt like he was just kind of running for his life.
00:06:59
Speaker
He just could not get comfortable and get in that groove where when Nathan Rourke is on, he is the client like he is the best quarterback in the in this league or one of the best three, we'll say.
00:07:10
Speaker
But it's just he never got comfortable in this game. The Bombers had him kind of running for his life and it led to him you know on the sidelines to finish this game. And Jeremiah Masoli had to come in in relief.

Montreal Alouettes vs Ottawa Red Blacks Recap

00:07:22
Speaker
We'll see what the what comes out of that. you Like say, was an oblique injury. Uh, I, I just don't know. It may have been a, uh, let's say face here. Let's put Rourke on the sideline injury, but I hope it's nothing too serious.
00:07:36
Speaker
Uh, but yeah, I mean, they just made work uncomfortable all night and, uh, it was just not, not a good, it was, it was a Nathan Rourke from last year performance, uh, the opposite of what we saw in week one from him.
00:07:48
Speaker
Yeah. They said that, uh, he went and saw medical staff for an oblique poll, uh, more evaluation to come, uh, soon. He has not been ruled out for the weekend.
00:07:58
Speaker
ah But yeah, tough night for Rourke. Like you said, Willie Jefferson was just all over the field like it. think they said something on the broadcast where if you're a quarterback, like you have to know where he is on the field every single snap.
00:08:10
Speaker
And that just has to be so tiring for a quarterback to have to take that into account every time you have the ball in your hands. ah The best part of his game for Rourke, I thought, was his feet. He led the team with 58 rushing yards.
00:08:22
Speaker
I think that's been like a real positive in his game so far is how good he is on his feet. um But yeah, not a ton of positives for the Lions in this one. Keon Hatcher had a great game, ah four receptions, 127 yards, including that huge touchdown.
00:08:38
Speaker
They had 11 targets like it was four catches on 11 targets. Bit of a tough line. ah You know, Winnipeg, to their defense's credit, was able to shut down James Butler. He only had 27 yards on 10 carries.
00:08:50
Speaker
um But yeah, Matthew Peterson really, really stood out in this one for the Bombers. ah It was, you know, next man up. Brady Oliveira comes out ripping like a 43 yard rush, ah but then injures his shoulder and has to leave the game.
00:09:04
Speaker
And then Matthew Peterson, a Canadian rookie from, I think it's Brooks, Alberta, steps up and absolutely crushes this Lions defense. He was a fourth round pick by Hamilton in the 2024 draft. He won the Canada West player of the year last year with 1,100 rushing yards.
00:09:21
Speaker
You got to think, like, we'll get to the Hamilton Tiger Cats, but... For a team that currently is struggling to run the ball, seeing one of your former draft picks just tear up a defense for one of the best teams in the league has to sting so badly. Yeah, you can never have enough depth in the CFL, especially if it's Canadian talent. That that helps as well.
00:09:44
Speaker
And I mean, you know, maybe the Bombers have their next guy of the future with with ah Matthew Peterson here. Yeah, Hamilton, you know, maybe you should have... like they just did not address that running back room at all. And it's showing up through the first two weeks.
00:09:59
Speaker
They have a nice buy coming up, which I think will help them a lot. Maybe they can get something going on the ground here. A good thing for BC, you got it. it's a back you're You're going back to Winnipeg. Well, I guess you're hosting Winnipeg, but you're playing them again ah in week three.
00:10:15
Speaker
So, I mean, you can get your you can get your get back here in this in week three. We'll see, though. you know Obviously, if Rourke is playing, that's going to be huge to keep an eye on. No disrespect to Jeremiah Masoli, great veteran in the league, but I just think the team is obviously very...
00:10:29
Speaker
but it's just a lot better with Nathan Rourke. And we're going to see Zach Caleros come back for the Bombers in week three, which, you know, Strebler was great, but that's going to be a step up as well for that team. So just going to be interesting to see if, you know, BC can bounce back in week three and kind of, yeah or at least just put on a better performance. This game was just never really close, kind of over by halftime if you want to look at it that way.
00:10:51
Speaker
um But yeah, it was just not good for BC and they need to bounce back in week three. Yeah. Just such a gut punch to like, have a loss like that and then you got to realize oh yeah we have to play Zach Kalaros next week yeah at least you're going home you know what I mean that's that's your bright side there that crowd was rocking in week one maybe you maybe you go back to the well bring Snoop Dogg back out there yeah that was brutal uh tough tough place to play they had like 36,000 people there like it's always impressive um but we'll move back to the east um with a team that has
00:11:25
Speaker
seemingly figured out its rushing room and it's the Montreal Alouettes continuing to just steamroll teams in the Eastern Conference Alouettes 39 Red Blacks 18 the place to start with this one is a disclaimer this was a Matthew Schiltz game for Ottawa this game is a lot a lot different with Drew Brown in at quarterback however The Montreal Alouettes defense is operating at a completely other level than we've seen, even from last year where they had the best defense in the CFL.
00:11:59
Speaker
They have six takeaways in two games. ah They have two defensive scores in two games. ah They had interceptions from a defensive lineman, a linebacker and a defensive back in this one.
00:12:13
Speaker
Like you're getting all three phases of your defense getting interceptions on Matthew Schiltz, who was this was a nightmare game for him. ah You know, the the last one, ah Wesley Sutton running it in for a pick six. Absolutely put the nail in the ah coffin.
00:12:28
Speaker
um But yeah, just a A dominant, dominant game from Montreal's defense who gets their ninth straight win against Ottawa and their 11th straight win at TD plays. Just ruins the home opener and continues one of the more crazy streaks in the CFL.
00:12:46
Speaker
Dominant. they They currently own the Ottawa Red Blacks. ah Drew Brown, it was kind of like a, it was pretty late scratch. Like it was, we recorded on Wednesday or sorry, we we recorded on Tuesday and I believe the news came out Thursday. Yeah. ah And so that was big shifted the line because this, this game was basically a pick them. Ottawa was a slight favorite going into it with Drew Brown at quarterback.
00:13:09
Speaker
That obviously doesn't happen. he They said he looks good to play week three. Keep an eye on that. ah But yeah, the Alouettes came out with Matthew Schiltz and they just didn't give them life.
00:13:20
Speaker
ah And like you said, the defense, they've only allowed 28 points total through two weeks. like You can win giving up 28 points in a game and they've given up 28 points over two weeks. It was just...
00:13:31
Speaker
pretty much perfect. It was just hilarious though. In the first half, they were just killing them with field goals. It was just drive down the field, field goal, field goal, field goal. They were able to get a ah an an Evans one yard run in there, but it was just field goal after field goal, long drives, long drives, keeping Schiltz in the Ottawa ah offense on the sideline.
00:13:50
Speaker
And then, you know, you you have to get the points and field goals do add up and they matter. And I think Some NFL teams should take note of this. You can win kicking field goals. You don't always have to go for it on fourth down or in this case, third down.
00:14:03
Speaker
ah But yeah, it was perfect performance for Montreal. ah you know They now become the favorites to win the great cup after a performance like this. And I i agree. It's just been nice ah with Davis Alexander. he He just looks more and more comfortable after every single game he plays.
00:14:20
Speaker
Still hasn't played a full like season in the CFL, which is kind of crazy to think about But yes, I mean, it's it's all Montreal here. Like Davis Alexander was just 23 of 32 for 344 yards in the air.
00:14:34
Speaker
ah It was a perfect game from them. Through the interception, so I guess maybe not perfect on the stat sheet. But I mean, otherwise, it was just very well. ah yeah A very good performance from Alexander in the Alouettes.
00:14:46
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, he's now like he's two games away from the record to start a CFL career. i think it's eight. and No, he's six and oh now. ah It is really impressive. He just looks really composed.
00:15:00
Speaker
um Part of that is he has a lot of time to to kind of, you know, do what he wants to do. And part of it is how good this receiving core is. Like he hits seven different receivers in this one.
00:15:11
Speaker
Tyler Sneed and Austin Mack both go over 100 yards. Phil Plott was great in this game. They moved James Letcher from like strictly punt and kick returning to now being a receiver.
00:15:23
Speaker
He's got 37 yards and a touchdown like it is. He was spreading the ball. People were able to get open all night. It's hard to get a read kind of on this. Red Black's defense so far, like you, they were on the field so often in this one that it was hard to tell, like, you know, what this defense really has because they were just not able to really get rest throughout this entire game. Like you said, long, long drives from Montreal.
00:15:50
Speaker
ah The one other thing I had from this game from Montreal is, Travis Tice is becoming a problem, dude. He had 12 carries for 75 yards. He's got a long of 32, also gets two receptions for 25 yards.
00:16:05
Speaker
Just like he's a perfect running back. Like he runs downhill. He puts his head into people like it is. He is seemingly so difficult to stop once he gets ahead of steam.
00:16:16
Speaker
Yeah, it was Sean Thomas Erlington in week one. Now you got Travis Tice in week two. It's just guys are stepping up for Montreal right now. And, you know, I'll go back to it Like we didn't know what this running back room was going to look like. Tice was a promising prospect and he's shown up in week two. It was kind of his welcome to the season moment.
00:16:35
Speaker
And it's just great to see from this team. And, you know, the I'll give credit to Ottawa. They have played two contenders to start it and they've given up 70 points through the first two weeks, which is just the complete opposite of what Montreal is doing on the defensive side of the ball.
00:16:51
Speaker
But I mean, Montreal just looks like a ah real threat and they're getting it done on both sides of the ball. Like you said, they were spreading it around. know, in the air. And then you kind of have two running backs that at any given moment can be your number one and give you ah an excellent performance, not just like ah a serviceable game. It seems like if they're on, they're going to be a huge problem for the opposing defense.
00:17:14
Speaker
ah Ottawa, if it's just it just wasn't good. And I don't know, well like do you think this is a, like you just throw it out, you know Matthew Schiltz, this isn't what we are. Because the offense, while it wasn't good, I do think the defense has got to tighten up a bit here. Because you've given up 70 points through the first two weeks. And you just need to like give your offense a chance. Because their running back room has kind of been non-existent with just having to play from behind yeah the entire game. So I don't know. Because Stanback has not...
00:17:46
Speaker
been able to showcase his abilities thus far in the season. I know like only 40 rushing yards again. Like, i mean, you only had 210 passing like that part of the game. I think you have to take with a grain of salt because they are playing from behind. I think you burn the tape from this game, except for the penalties, dude. This was another game where,
00:18:06
Speaker
They just got shredded by penalties, 11 penalties for 98 yards. like It is just not a sustainable formula for this Ottawa team to keep losing yards both on offense and on defense. they had I think they had two horse-collar tackles in the same quarter. like it you know You're getting 30 yards of penalties just off of those two plays alone.
00:18:29
Speaker
ah Really tough. They need Drew Brown back. i'm I think he will be back. I think they play... a Calgary next week so it's uh we'll get to that later but maybe a bit of a reprieve from uh you know the absolute absolute great cup contenders you've been playing so far um but yeah Ottawa you gotta just kind of pick your head up and focus on getting the next one because you need a win here early.
00:18:54
Speaker
And those were two tough, tough games. I think that Drew Brown can really give them a shot against Calgary. ah And I think they're, they're on the road for that one too. Yeah.
00:19:04
Speaker
At least, at least it's on like the Saturday. So you get a no couple extra days to get healthy and it, it seemed, it didn't seem, you know, too serious because they probably thought he was 50, 50 to play last week. They, they, you know,
00:19:19
Speaker
proceeded on the side of caution and just said, you know, we got a whole season to play. ah So yeah, I, and they said he, he, they look for him to play in week three. So I'm going to go off that and they need a bounce back. They need to get in the wind column.
00:19:32
Speaker
Good opportunity to do it this Saturday.

Toronto Argos Home Opener and Challenges

00:19:34
Speaker
Absolutely. We'll stick in the Eastern side of things, or at least location wise, where the Argos had their home opener, Their banner raising game ah spoiled by the Calgary Stampeders.
00:19:47
Speaker
Stampeders 29, Argos 19. This was a frustrating game for a lot of different reasons. I'll start with the stadium. okay So BMO is currently under construction for the World Cup next year.
00:20:02
Speaker
They've taken out the entire end zone stands and the Jumbotron in that section. The whole north side of the stadium is currently like roped off in terms of entrances.
00:20:16
Speaker
So there's only two entrances, like basically on, on one side of the stadium on the South side, maybe three. ah And so, you know, I get there at like three 15 and doors opened at three. So i was like, I'm going to get one of these rings. No problem.
00:20:35
Speaker
I get there and it is like pandemonium to get into this stadium, like lines of, of hundreds and hundreds of people finally choose one, get through the gate, and they're like, sorry, out of rings. I'm like, what? like ah Out of rings already? like So I start like pinballing over to the other two gates, and the other two gates have lots of rings, but you go up to the guy who's like, yo, can i can I grab one of those? And he goes, no, like you if you want one, you'll have to exit and then reenter through this gate.
00:21:09
Speaker
So I go back to my seat. Everybody is like, I see guys like yelling back and forth with security guards because they can't get one. Like that part of the game was pandemonium.
00:21:19
Speaker
I had to buy one of the rings. Wow. That's that's tough. Demo. I see they're looking for the money, man. It's real, real tough look. um But on the on the positive side of things, aside from the construction, biggest Argos home opener crowd since 2016. I think it had just shy 18,000 or maybe just shy of 19,000, which is a good sign.
00:21:40
Speaker
Good sign. lot of people in that building ah for the game, which was good. ah The gameplay, that was the part that wasn't great. ah goes This was a messy, messy game from the Argos and a super, super winnable game that they didn't.
00:21:58
Speaker
Like yeah it was just, it was in reach kind of the whole game and it just didn't happen. Yeah. They, they were in a bit of a, a grudge match and in the first quarter, especially it was three, nothing to end it.
00:22:09
Speaker
ah You know, Calgary responds with, with a field goal and where I think the game just really flipped on its head and all the momentum, went to stampeters direction was on the Adrian green 40 yard pick six.
00:22:23
Speaker
Uh, it's just, it's just something that like just can't happen, especially in that style of game. It was clear that, you know, whoever makes the big mistake was going to pay for it. And buckle and the Argos were the ones who made the mistake and they just really couldn't get points after that. And that kind of flipped Calgary,
00:22:40
Speaker
They ended up kind of getting some offense late in the fourth quarter. It was just that that was the backbreaker to me. ah And it's just like Arbuckle doesn't have that great cup magic this year.
00:22:52
Speaker
It's been pretty evident to see. ah He finished this game with with a pair of interceptions. He's now got four interceptions through two games, and it's just not good. and You just watch it. It's just like this guy is you know, the game seems a little faster for him this year.
00:23:11
Speaker
ah not and It's not all perfectly laid out for him like it kind of was at the end of the season last year with the Argos where like they They were at their peak. Everything was working perfectly as a well-oiled machine.
00:23:22
Speaker
This year, it's a little different. There's some new pieces to it. And Arbuckle kind of just hasn't really gotten in the hang of things this year. i thought we were maybe going to see some Tucker Horn action in there.
00:23:34
Speaker
I guess Dinwiddie's saying like this is our backup. He won us a great cup, so I'm not going to pull him mid-game, but I think we could be looking at Tucker Horn starting next week. like I think it could be one of those situations.
00:23:47
Speaker
We'll keep an eye on that. I am just kind of you know throwing stuff at the wall, seeing if it sticks, but it was just an ugly game from the Argos, and I think it started with that pick six. It really was the momentum switch in that game because without that,
00:24:01
Speaker
That ends up being like a Dargos might be leading after the first half in that game because it ended up being nine for going into half. And the Argos started the game extremely well on defense. Like the defense looked massively better than in that game against Montreal.
00:24:19
Speaker
They forced Calgary to punt on both of their opening drives, massive sacks on, on Vernon Adams. Like Wynton McManus had a big one. Andrew Chatfield absolutely knocked the Sonic coins out of Vernon Adams on one of those hits.
00:24:34
Speaker
ah DeMarcus Christmas gets a sack. Like I thought McManus and judge looked great at linebacker. They're going across the field. ah But yeah, like Arbuckle had been flirting with that interception all of the first half and,
00:24:48
Speaker
and then it comes back to really sting you, ah sucks that it had to be a St. Mike's guy to take it back. Shout out. But, um, that was really the point where this game started to turn, like you said.
00:24:59
Speaker
And the thing with our buckles that he, like you said, the game looks a bit fast, but I thought, thought what they did really well with our buckle in those, you know, the Eastern final end of the game and in the great cup was they got the ball out of his hands really fast.
00:25:13
Speaker
Like he, he wasn't holding on to balls long. He had easy options. They were running the ball well. And I think the longer that he holds on to the ball, the easier it is for him to make mistakes, whether that's interceptions, whether that's big s sacks.
00:25:29
Speaker
and And it's just becoming increasingly obvious that the longer that this guy has to operate, the more prone he is to making big mistakes. I think that's the biggest adjustment that they need to make if Arbuckle stays in at quarterback is a lot of quicker plays I wouldn't mind seeing Tucker Horn from what I saw from him in the preseason it seems like he has a great arm and really good football IQ i would not mind seeing that because he got Saskatchewan rolling in next week who stayed on the east coast like it's not like they're traveling they played in Hamilton so they'll be adjusted um but yeah that this one was kind of death by a thousand cuts for the Argos like it was just
00:26:08
Speaker
small mistake, small mistake, big mistake, and then they were all just kind of compiling. While Calgary just took care of the football, kept getting big plays when they needed it, and that ended up really producing ah offense in the second half because they looked like a well-oiled machine in the second half ah that just got ah a huge throw, a huge run whenever they needed it.
00:26:28
Speaker
they They were the better team. it was kind of it was It was obvious as the game moved along because you were kind of waiting for the Argos to figure it out. You're thinking, okay, slow start. Defense is keeping them in.
00:26:39
Speaker
it'll It'll happen. It'll happen. And it it didn't. And on the other side, Calgary had the slow start in the first quarter, and then they found their game. like as As the game went on, Calgary got better and better, and the Argos just kind of stayed where they were. And if anything, maybe got a little bit worse.
00:26:55
Speaker
Coxie with the late touchdown. big play guy. Like you said, he he's always making a big play, even if it's in a kind of a nothing moment or a nothing game, but nice to see him always deliver. But on the other side, your Vernon Adams Jr. MOP mo p so off to a pretty good start.
00:27:11
Speaker
He had 301 yards in the air. three hundred and one yards in the air 54 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown. You know, he's he's got a nice thing going with Philpott and Rimes. Philpott at 117 yards.
00:27:24
Speaker
Rimes just short of 100 with 98 yards on only four receptions. So their offense is a well-oiled machine. you know, Dedrick Mills finds the end zone again. He's going to be a big time touchdown prop guy, it seems like, as this season goes on.
00:27:38
Speaker
ah But yeah, it was just Calgary. got better as the game went on. you know Their offense got into a rhythm. they They survived. They didn't make the mistakes. And the Argos just faltered. And it it was ugly. And you know it's it's got me thinking, like where is Chad Kelly? We need you. like This team is a lot better with Chad Kelly at quarterback.
00:27:59
Speaker
I thought Arbuckle was going to be able to you know allow them to like just survive through this stretch without Kelly. But i mean like we'll get to the power rankings later.
00:28:10
Speaker
they They do not look good to start the year. it just They do not look good at all. and you know Even Tucker Horn may not be better than Nick Arbuckle, but it's just kind of a a vibe shift or just something to change the momentum that's going on with the Argos right now. because It's kind of bad vibes going on. The only positive thing was mine. Williams kind of had a great game aside from the coax. Cox, he's going to be the guy this year, it seems in the receiving room.
00:28:38
Speaker
ah But yeah, mine Williams kind of stepped up nine rushes, 62 yards. Like someone's got to take that number one running back spot in the Argos running back room. And after a game like this, it looks like Williams is, you know, trending in that direction.
00:28:51
Speaker
Yeah, earned a couple of huge first downs with his feet and just another guy like Travis Tice runs downhill all the time, runs into tackles, ah does not avoid conflict whatsoever.
00:29:04
Speaker
Very fun to watch. He was certainly a positive of this game. um But yeah, it'll be it'll be tough sledding for this Argos team. It's starting to look like, ah you know, they're going to have to battle to just get into the playoffs. You know, obviously that could really change on a dime ah if Chad Kelly gets back to this team. He's on the sidelines.
00:29:23
Speaker
you know, firing up the crowd, like walking around fine. So I'd like to think that he's back sooner rather than later. um But time's going to tell on that one um to the last game of the week here.

Saskatchewan Rough Riders vs Hamilton Recap

00:29:35
Speaker
Hamilton loses their home opener, just three home openers for Eastern teams, three losses as the Rough Riders come to town and win what ended up being a close one at the end.
00:29:47
Speaker
Saskatchewan 28, Hamilton 23. um The biggest thing from this game ah was really, there's a couple of things. I think the Rough Riders in this game proved how good their roster is, especially at the receiving core.
00:30:01
Speaker
You know, you have Sean Bain Jr. out, you have Kean Schaefer Baker out, and it's just a next man up mentality. Like Hamilton manages to shut down Samuel Amelis after he has a great game in week one. And this was the Keyshawn Johnson game.
00:30:16
Speaker
He had eight catches, 124 yards and a touchdown. He almost single-handedly marched the Rough Riders down for the winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Touchdown drive of 70 yards. He had 69 of them on four catches, including a 15-yard catch for the touchdown.
00:30:35
Speaker
Then he gets two catches on the next drive. like it was He had absolute glue on his hands in the end of this game, and Hamilton had no ah option to cover him. like They just couldn't do it.
00:30:47
Speaker
Yeah, the Hamilton defense has struggled through the first two games, and you know on the flip side, it's the the Rough Riders have shown that they they are in the the upper tier of the West, and I think it's kind of them and the Bombers going to be going at it this season. It's going to fun game.
00:31:04
Speaker
fun battle to watch to see who comes out of this West or at least gets home field advantage in the playoffs. Because yeah, like you said, you know, the top receivers weren't there. And then MLS is kind of shut down.
00:31:16
Speaker
And then Keyshawn Johnson out of nowhere. It's just like, he's going to put the team on his back, eight receptions, 124 yards. And like he said, gets the huge touchdown late to kind of secure this victory because we know it wasn't Brett Lother that, you know,
00:31:31
Speaker
it If it wasn't for him, ah if Brett went, let's say, you know, 50% field goals this game, they win by two scores, but instead he misses three field goals and an extra point, especially the one late. Like he, if he makes that one late,
00:31:47
Speaker
I think you just kind of put it all behind you. You secure a win. you know Hamilton has go all the way down the field, get a touchdown, and like you can't lose the game.
00:31:58
Speaker
But you know he misses that one late. Bo Levi Mitchell is a dangerous man when he just he needs one thing to do, and it's go down the field and go get a touchdown. And then now he's got Kenny Lawler, who like that connection is ah alive and well going for them.
00:32:13
Speaker
But yeah, it was just a unnecessary... unnecessarily stressful for the rough riders at the end there. And I think a lot of that has to do with the kicking. Yeah, it's a very mixed reaction from from Saskatchewan fans.
00:32:27
Speaker
A lot of them are like, listen, this problem already reared its head last year. he went through a stretch a really bad stretch. And now to start the season like this is not a sign of better things to come. Some people are quite loyal to him, you know, been with the team a long time. Give him the benefit of the doubt. He'll figure it out.
00:32:44
Speaker
um But just that is the only part of their team right now that you look at and is like, that's a problem because the running game is dangerous. Like AJ Lett comes back already after we thought it might be a long timeout.
00:32:59
Speaker
They said head. like I think he had a concussion. um But then he goes out in this game and gets a 47-yard touchdown to give Saskatchewan the first touchdown of the game. He finishes with 96 yards on 13 attempts.
00:33:12
Speaker
Kadeem carry is 26 yards on four rushes. Like if that is the duo this year, all like immediately in the second game, teams are going to have a problem covering them.
00:33:23
Speaker
Trevor Harris, again, like Mr. Consistent I had here, like he won't lose you a game like for all the, you know, any detractors of Trevor Harris. The one thing that he, you can pretty much never say is that he like blew you a game He might not have gone out and like done everything and been lights out to win you one.
00:33:41
Speaker
um But when you have a you know a consistent quarterback like that, 26 for 37, 295 and a touchdown and interception, he's just going to be steady back there and get the ball to his guys.
00:33:54
Speaker
And that was really evident with the Rough Riders because they didn't have the lead until... Hamilton made the big mistake of this game. Like Bo Levi throws a 64 yard pick six in the third quarter to give Saskatchewan the lead for the first time in the game.
00:34:11
Speaker
Another 40 attempt game from Bo Levi. And when you're really heavily reliant on his arm, That is when he is prone to making mistakes. And when your eggs are in that basket, the Bo Levi mistake comes back to really bite in a bad way.
00:34:27
Speaker
And that was really what happened in this game. This game could have easily gone the other way and been a Ticats win. But it's those small mistakes by Bo Levi throughout the game. The big mistake on the pick six, yeah the inability to get the running game going or stop the rush that just added up and ended up in a Ticats loss here.
00:34:47
Speaker
Yeah, and I mean, yeah, guess guess who guess who got the pick six? Roland Milligan Jr., of course. Like, who else? This guy, it shows that, you know, it wasn't a one-off season. He's still the number one defensive back in the CFL.
00:35:00
Speaker
and Like, Hamilton is a fun team to watch, but I think Milanovic wants them to be less fun. You know i mean Just, like, it's sick to the fundamentals. The defense can, like, stop...
00:35:12
Speaker
the opposing offense and Bo is going to throw it. like I think that's just what this offense is going to be for the rest of the year. It's ah like Greg Bell actually had a half decent game, like 46 yards on five rushes is good. And he found the end zone, but Bo Levi wants to throw the ball.
00:35:30
Speaker
he's He's found a nice relationship with Kenny Lawler who had 162 yards in this game. like It's clear it's just they're always going to look to Kenny Lawler. That's their first look every single time. If he's open or even if it's a 50-50 ball, he's going to get his look.
00:35:45
Speaker
And then it's just, you need other guys to step up, but I don't know if they have the depth necessary where, you know, the other side of the field, Saskatchewan has guys stepping up, especially in the receiver room. I don't know if Hamilton has that same kind of depth and talent.
00:36:01
Speaker
I mean, you still have the whole season and and you know these um unsung heroes have time to step up and you know develop their role on this team, but it has not been a promising start for Hamilton. you know We're onto them though. like They're a great over team because they score points and they give up even more. So we'll see if this changes going forward, but I think they got have a different game plan because it's pretty obvious that if you can stop Kenny Lawler, this team is going to struggle to score points.
00:36:31
Speaker
ah They're going to abandon the run game pretty quickly. And it's just going to be playing from behind, which is, well, like you said, like the first half was fine for Hamilton. They were in this game, they were leading.
00:36:42
Speaker
And then, you know, the game plan backfires where you're just throwing the ball, throwing the ball. And like, it's very similar to the Argos game, just like a bit more points involved in this one. But same thing where Just the changing of the tide happens on a big mistake.
00:36:57
Speaker
And then, you know, the the great team builds off that momentum and, you know, leads it into a victory for them. It was impressive ah second half for the Rough Riders.
00:37:08
Speaker
Yeah, Hamilton's a fun team to watch, except if you're a Ticats fan, I have to imagine. like This would have been a real frustrating game if you're a fan of Hamilton because it even a weird sequence at the end there where they have 56 seconds and Bo Levi throws like a 70-yard pass that's incomplete on first down and then throws like three checkdowns in a row. like It was just...
00:37:34
Speaker
super weird where it seemed like he he thought he had 20 seconds at the start of this drive burns like 17 on that play of of airing it out and it being an incompletion and then all of a sudden he's like scratching and clawing for any yards throwing check downs and then the game just ended on a on a missed third down it was like third and six or something and they just incomplete games over ah So real frustrating game. If you were a Thai cats fan cup, like the one positive is yes. Kenny Lawler is looking to be like a, still like his star self.
00:38:08
Speaker
Stavros cats and Tonis has been incredible so far to start this year, but yeah, they just, they need a win bad man. They're on the bi-week this week. So it's a, it's a positive for them. I think this team needs some time to kind of get it together, focus on the game plan because they have Montreal

Standout Players and Performances in Week 2

00:38:24
Speaker
after that. So it's,
00:38:25
Speaker
You don't want to start this season 0-5 again like they did last year. um But that's it for our week two recap. um Stars of the week this week is going to be tough because there was a lot of performances that were really caught your eye ah in this game or in all four of those games.
00:38:47
Speaker
I think that considering everything, the the one that i my eye catches to go number one is Matthew Peterson. To come in ah in relief of Brady Oliveira and throw up 130 23 carries and get a touchdown really stands out to me Yeah, it was huge. It was, it was, you know, Olivera goes out who was having a great game.
00:39:13
Speaker
And then Peterson just picks up right where he left off, carried that momentum and just help this team get a, get a huge win in their season opener against a team that, you know, BC, we didn't know what they were going to be this year. Week one, they started off pretty hot and then they kind of came back to life in this game. And a lot of it had to do because they couldn't stop Matthew Peterson.
00:39:34
Speaker
ah I'm going to go to the Riders. Similar situation. Keyshawn Johnson. He steps up. He steps up when he needed to. MLS was shut down.
00:39:44
Speaker
A couple of receivers out for the Rough Riders and Keyshawn Johnson, eight receptions on 11 targets, 124 yards and a huge touchdown late to help secure the win for the Rough Riders.
00:39:56
Speaker
just Just a similar thing where like, you know, it's not going perfect. We need someone to step up. And Keyshawn Johnson did exactly that. And that's why he is one of my stars of the week.
00:40:06
Speaker
Yeah, he could have easily been number one for me, too, in this game. And then, like, it just shows how good that receiving room is. Like, if Amalus was our first star last week, Johnson could easily be first star again this week.
00:40:19
Speaker
um My last one, man, there was a lot, lot of really, like, eye-popping ones here. But I think... It has to be for me, Davis Alexander, like to go 23 for 32, 344 yards and a touchdown ah in this one.
00:40:36
Speaker
it It just stood out to me like that's the second most yards that a quarterback is thrown for this year behind Drew Brown ah goes to to stay undefeated in his CFL career.
00:40:48
Speaker
ah Just an impressive performance from him. Yeah, like i said earlier, still hasn't played a full CFL season as a starter. He is, you know, it's a nice start.
00:41:00
Speaker
He's quickly on the path to becoming one of the top quarterbacks in this league. I'm not going to rush to that yet. You know, you got to see it over a an extended period of time. But what he's done in his first couple games this season and going back to the games he played last season, very promising for Montreal. And I don't think they're regretting the move to, you know, dish out Cody Fajardo. I think they're very happy with what they have in Davis Alexander.
00:41:25
Speaker
Absolutely. Some honorable mentions. I think AJ Lett getting 96 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries is definitely ah worthy of an honorable mention. Adrian Green, two interceptions, one pick six.
00:41:39
Speaker
Carrick Weefall quietly had five receptions, 127 yards and a touchdown. And also Keon Hatcher, four receptions, 150 yards and a touchdown. Yeah.
00:41:51
Speaker
And, you know, we'll get, we'll give the honorary Chris Strebler, cause we don't know if he'll be back here for the rest of the season. Calero is coming back. ah He was great. You know, just did what he had to do in that game to get the win.
00:42:01
Speaker
ah It was just a lot of good performances this week. A lot of points for the teams that won. It was the offense eight this week. So, you know, it was nice that you shouted out Adrian greens to get some defensive love in there who did kind of flip that hat.
00:42:15
Speaker
that game on its head against the Argos. But yeah, a lot of a lot of guys this week. like Didn't even mention Kenny Lawler, but I know it came in at a loss, but just an insane game. So yeah, a lot of guys getting loved this week.
00:42:27
Speaker
Yeah, Kenny Lawler, eight receptions on 10 targets, 162 yards. ah He could have easily been up there as well ah had it been you know part of a winning effort, had he gotten in a touchdown, but still a great, great effort from him. he just he's He's so good.
00:42:41
Speaker
It's hard to put it any other way. um

CFL Team Rankings Debate

00:42:44
Speaker
on to power rankings the tough part this is uh this is where it kind of gets interesting here um this is tough like i think again like last week i think we have to like focus on the top three and like iron those out to start i think the top three are the same i would maybe give winnipeg the benefit of the doubt maybe bump them up to one maybe yeah yeah it's tough
00:43:14
Speaker
i It's those three teams. like Those are the top three teams, I believe, right now. No, for sure. It's just where you put them. Because you know Montreal, it's hard not to say they're first, but then they beat up on Matthew Schiltz and Nick Arbuckle. like Whereas Saskatchewan ah goes out and beats Drew Brown and Bo Levi.
00:43:34
Speaker
Winnipeg beats Nathan Rourke and the in the Lions.
00:43:38
Speaker
Yeah, it's tough. I feel like we actually could keep them the same, though. That's what was saying. If we want to like you know avoid just avoid some backlash and just kind of see... I think we leave it and then we just see how how it goes next week. I mean, if if Winnipeg does it again with Caleros and they shut down Rourke, then we can maybe talk moving them up.
00:43:58
Speaker
um But I mean, i think the Rough Riders are going to win again next week. So let's just leave the top three. i guess Those are the top three teams. And I think as the season unfolds, they'll kind of... that That'll just figure itself out as it goes. Yeah, I've got i've got a bit of a feisty one here.
00:44:16
Speaker
I think that we shift four to six down a slot and slot Calgary into that four spot. Yeah, I'll give them some love. They were impressive in a loss in the opening week, right? they Or sorry, in ah in a win. They're 2-0. Yeah. ah Yeah, sorry. i was I was thinking Ottawa for a second there. Apologies.
00:44:38
Speaker
ah Yeah, ah Calgary's 2-0. They've won in two very different ways. They were in a shootout in week one. The defense helped get it done in in week two. So yeah, i I have no problem with that at all.
00:44:50
Speaker
And then... like a I think we can probably keep BC, Ottawa, Toronto after that. or Yeah, I guess you leave it because the el the Elks were off, so we don't really know. I think they're fine there. Hamilton loses again, and their defense really can't stop anything.
00:45:09
Speaker
it's just Toronto toronto is is... I don't know what to do with this team because they have looked horrible through the first two weeks. I know that's not what their team is, um but it's like it's getting to the point where it it's slowly becoming more than just you know Arbuckle and Chad Kelly...
00:45:26
Speaker
it's It just hasn't looked good. I'm not going to panic and throw them at the bottom because in the back of my mind, I can't because I'm like, they've won great cut. They're defending great cup champions. Chad Kelly hasn't played. so But they're they're on watch.
00:45:40
Speaker
Another stinker against the Rough Riders at home this week coming up. And and I will not hesitate to put you down there. Yeah, absolutely. So yeah, it goes Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Montreal, Calgary, BC, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, Hamilton.
00:45:55
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I like it. It's, you know, a Hamilton, the good thing for the East, you know, the three teams probably haven't looked great. I mean, Ottawa, obviously with the Schiltz game, but it's wide open.
00:46:07
Speaker
and There's three teams at Owen too. So whoever wants to get into the playoffs, it's right there in front of you.

Game Previews for Week 3

00:46:12
Speaker
a good time for Hamilton to have the bye, but yeah, it's still wide open in the East for these teams that are owen to Absolutely. that is That is definitely one way to look at it.
00:46:20
Speaker
um Moving into week three, a quick week three preview ah starts with Montreal going out West to Edmonton to play the Elks. The opening line was five and a half points for the Alouettes.
00:46:37
Speaker
tough one for for Edmonton we talked about this in our our preseason preview about you know the Elks you know just trying to scratch and claw to even get to like two and four in their first six games it's still five and a half now uh this is a this is a big test for Edmonton yeah uh coming off a bye you're at home you're You're going against a team that is currently favored to win the Great Cup. They've looked perfect through their first two weeks. Davis Alexander kind of is what I think they want Trey Ford to be in a way.
00:47:09
Speaker
And it's just going to be a nice test for Edmonton here. I don't need you to win this game ah like your five and a half point dogs. you're You're at home against a ah tough team. but be in the fight here.
00:47:20
Speaker
You know what i mean? Just like hang tough. Don't get down a bunch and then have Trey Ford scramble around and, you know, make these highlight reel plays in a, in a nothing game, like stay in the fight.
00:47:32
Speaker
Don't make the mistakes. Kind of just, you know, throw some punches, have the defense, make some plays, get them off the field, hold them to field goals. um But yeah, I would like to see a bit of a response from Edmonton after week one and coming off a bye here.
00:47:46
Speaker
Yeah, so would I. i just It's going to be tough because you know Montreal's ah offense is enough to deal with. i actually think that you know in a straight-up game, I think Edmonton's defense could probably put up a pretty good fight against Montreal's ah offense.
00:48:01
Speaker
To me, it's this Alouette's defense going up against Edmonton on ah offense. like That is... you know The worry in this game is that this Montreal offense, similar to the Ottawa game, just absolutely feasts on Trey Ford mistakes, and it gets out of hand that way.
00:48:19
Speaker
Very much possible. it's yeah You just don't know what we're going to get from Edmonton from week to week. They're going to be one of those teams where... you know, at their best, it's going to this is a playoff contender in the West. And then at their worst, you know, and their second last in our power rankings and could go to last that at any given week. So yeah, I would, it's just, just show me something, Edmonton. That's all I'm asking. hand You don't need to win this game. Like Montreal is in a class above you this year, but just like, you know,
00:48:47
Speaker
quiet the Trey Ford haters. Just like, let's have a ah turnover less game and just hang in there and just see what it is. Like, I think they would love for this game to kind of just go under 48 and a half and just get in one of those games and get it to a spot where, you know, if you get the ball with a minute 30 left, you have a chance to win the game. That, that would be a nice thing to see for the Alex.
00:49:08
Speaker
Totally agree. Uh, it's, Yeah, you just want to see some fight out of them in this one. um Moving to Friday, Saskatchewan, like we said, staying out east to play the Argos at home. Rough Riders open and are currently still two and a half point favorites.
00:49:25
Speaker
Small spread, small spread in this one is what I will say, because in any other form of a preview, you would say this is going to be such an uphill battle for the Argos, especially with the Rough Riders, how tough of a defense they have and how dynamic of an offense they have to cover two and a half is going to be a mission, I would say.
00:49:46
Speaker
But why is the spread so low? It's got to move. I mean, the Argos are plus money on the spread right now. So I would assume this moves to at least three by kickoff.
00:49:58
Speaker
But yeah, it's surprising. I guess they're saying Toronto has to figure this out eventually. And they're at home. i would like to see another nice crowd at BMO Field. That would be a nice boost for the Argos who are kind of searching for something early in the season.
00:50:13
Speaker
it Yeah, this spread is surprising. I don't know if the CFL does trap lines, though. That's kind of what I'm starting to realize a little bit. ah you know you can You can find some holes in CFL lines. you know and I'm 500, so Damien's picking up better than me to start the year, so...
00:50:30
Speaker
You know, maybe fade me. we'll We'll see. We're not in fully fade Pat season yet, but we could easily get there by week five. ah But yeah it same same kind of thing with the Elks here for the Argos. Yeah. Show us something. Like we i we want to believe in this team.
00:50:46
Speaker
We know what they can be. I know, you know, we've said a million times Chad Kelly's not there. but Arbuckle has to be better. He couldn't play worse, I think for these first two weeks. So at least find your B game, man. It doesn't have to be a brutal game every single week.
00:50:59
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. You just want to see something. i think ah a good start would be everything for the Argos in a game like this. Like if you go out and get even a first quarter touchdown, like ah direction could you imagine the Argos doing that this year?
00:51:13
Speaker
That's where we're at right now is like a first quarter touchdown would be massive for this team. So yeah, i think a good start will be everything in this game. Just keep Saskatchewan to field goals even like like we've seen. If you force them to kick a field goal, who knows if Brett Lawler is going to make it Exactly. The game plan is pretty simple for this one. It's just keep it in front of you, home to field goals, and just the turnovers, like the Arbuckle, four interceptions through two weeks. That's got to stop. And you're not throwing enough touchdowns to make up for them either. So yeah just something's got to change for the Argos here. And on the other side, we'll just see if the Riders can just keep rolling.
00:51:51
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, it'll ah this game, you know, if the riders come out and just blow the doors off them, it's like, all right, this riders team is a great cup contender. Absolutely.
00:52:01
Speaker
um Red Blacks stamps Red Blacks going out West Stampeders one and a half point favorites in this one this is a really interesting game like I just pray Drew Brown is playing in this game because to me this is like an ultimate grocery stick game like if if Ottawa versus the stamps like it's like who takes over the top of that next rung of teams Yeah, fun game of the week, this one. ah Yeah, and like, you know, Calgary's off the 2-0 start.
00:52:32
Speaker
Ottawa with the Schultz game that, you know, you're going to burn the tape. And they've shown a lot offensively, both these two teams. So obviously, I think, you know, where Damien and I's kind of head goes with this one.
00:52:43
Speaker
But yeah, it the the red blocks with Drew Brown. I think can give Calgary like, think it's going to be a ah ah battle like this game where, like you said, I don't know who's going to separate from the pack, but there's got to be, you know, a ah fourth team in the, in the upper tier of teams that are going to contend for a great cup.
00:53:02
Speaker
And these are two teams that, you know, they haven't really had the playoff success, especially last year. Ottawa was able to get into the playoffs. Calgary misses it for the first time in forever. And they want to get back or for,
00:53:15
Speaker
Ottawa, they just want to get there. Calgary's been there a bunch of times. So who can like step up and elevate themselves into the pack above? We'll see. I truly don't know. This is going to be ah the fun game of the week for me.
00:53:27
Speaker
Yeah. I'm very excited to see it. ah Yeah. I'm trying to, I was just trying to find anything on the drew Brown injury. They're pretty tight lipped on it. ah Hopefully he's playing in this one um because like we've seen from this stamps defense, if it's Matthew Schiltz, they will eat him alive in this one ah last game of the week.
00:53:47
Speaker
rematch of last week blue bombers coming out west to take on the lions opening as two and a half point favorites and i believe it's still two and a half yep yeah yeah and this one's interesting do the lines get off up off the mat like they I think it was Nathan Rourke is 0-4 in his career against Winnipeg. Like just cannot beat this team. Obviously, that coincides with them having, you know, a run of, you know, supremacy in this past five years.
00:54:18
Speaker
um But this one, similar to, you know, the opening two games, I want to see something from the Lions in this game. I want it to be close. You're at home now. And i that's really it Like if this can be a field goal game, whether you win or whether you lose, i don't think truly matters. Like you just want to see something out of BC in this game.
00:54:37
Speaker
Yeah, ah a response. A response from the Lions would be huge ah to show. Because after week one, we were thinking, be seized that team to you know hop up with Winnipeg and Saskatchewan and just see if if they can like throw their hat in the ring, make the playoffs, maybe go on a run. But after what we saw last week, Rourke just didn't look comfortable.
00:54:58
Speaker
you know We'll see if he plays. I guess he's not 100% starting this week. Jeremiah Masoli will not win this game. I can go off and say that with Zach Caleros coming back.
00:55:09
Speaker
ah so yeah you You would like Rourke to play, and you need a response here. and you know We'll see how Zach Caleros looks with the Bombers. because If it's better than how they looked with Chris Streffler last week, then it's like yeah we we

00:55:22
Speaker
are back.
00:55:22
Speaker
The Bombers have not gone anywhere and we're going to win the West again. Yeah, it's ah yeah. I guess that line kind of indicates right now that they I guess that they would be leaning that Rourke is playing in this game.
00:55:36
Speaker
Yeah, I would agree with that. If you if you don't think he's going to play, maybe hop on it now ah for the Bombers, because I think if If they, similar to like the Drew Brown and and Matthew Schiltz, like that line moved about seven points by kickoff from when it was opened.
00:55:51
Speaker
This could be another one where if Jeremiah Masoli is announced on Thursday ah that he's he's starting, you're going to see this line move to maybe five and a half. Like it's going to be active. So. you know take Take a shot if you think, but for now, it's in the indicative of Nathan Rourke starting.
00:56:09
Speaker
Big word. Yes, sir. ah Yeah, very sneaky one. It's not one that we gave out, but I hopped on Al's nine and a half minus nine and a half last week. I think was plus 255.
00:56:21
Speaker
Yeah, I, my, my take did not look good, but when I said we didn't know that Matthew Schiltz was starting. So correct. Yeah. Well, this will be a nice tell if Drew Brown is like, is playing, if Ottawa kind of just handles the stamps, which I'm not saying they will, but if they do, then I think, you know, that line last week where they were one point favorites over the owls makes a bit more sense.
00:56:44
Speaker
Definitely, definitely. That'll be, ah yeah, excited to watch that game. On to our week three picks. We were two and two heading into week two. We went three and one as a podcast. The BC Lions sold us a bit there. We had Saskatchewan minus three and a half, Calgary plus three and a half, which was a absolute winner.
00:57:05
Speaker
And then the the system play over 50 and a half in Saskatchewan Hamilton. Easy, easy hit. ah And we're now five and three going into week three. So we're in the positives. We've got some room to play around with here.
00:57:19
Speaker
I think that to start out, I think going kind of with the system of last week, I think it's Saskatchewan minus two and a half before this moves any further.
00:57:31
Speaker
Yeah, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. We've had the riders in the first two weeks on the point spread. They've covered both weeks. Got a little stressful, I guess, with that last drive for Bolivar Mitchell.
00:57:44
Speaker
i Came up short, thankfully for us. um But yeah, i I like that pick a lot. I think it'll move to at least three. ah just Just the way it is. like The Argos are plus money right now on the spread. So that's kind of interesting why it hasn't moved. But yeah, I'm liking the riders a lot.
00:58:01
Speaker
ah For my pick, I'll go with the fun game of the week. I've already put the label on it, so you got to go with it. Over 50.5 in the red-black stamps, and this is where we pray that Drew Brown is playing because if Matthew Schiltz is starting, I do not think this goes over the total based on what we saw last week from him.
00:58:19
Speaker
So yeah, I'm going to take the over 50.5 and just... Please, Drew Brown, please. Let's hope your hip is healed and you're ready to go and put up a lot of points. Yeah, I agree. um I'm almost going to fade myself in this one because i had written down Al's five and a half. And when we were doing our preview, i was like, maybe Edmonton can cover this game.
00:58:40
Speaker
I'm going to go against that thought and and just take Al's five and a half. I think that that will probably even move closer to game time. Yeah, I don't mind. I think the number is pretty good because like it makes you think. right It's enough points to make you think about taking the Elks, but I do not disagree about the Owls. Who knows? like I don't think we'll be upset if Edmonton comes out, covers it, gives us a good game, like and just kind of shows some fight.
00:59:05
Speaker
and with the last pick With the last pick of this week... i don't I don't really know where I'm going. It's kind of all over the place. I kind of want to go back to the fun game of the week, but I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket where I don't know if Drew Brown is starting.
00:59:21
Speaker
Because I think if Drew Brown is starting, Ottawa can win this game. I believe they're a better team with him at quarterback than the Stamps. I'm not going to do it, though, because it's just too risky.
00:59:32
Speaker
with the Bombers. so i'll go i'll go with the bombers Yeah. palmer's minus two and a half colleo' is coming back we don't know if nathan rourke's goingnna be playing and if he is playing we don't know if he's gonna be one hundred percent ah they just look like such a better team than bc last week obviously it's tough to beat a team you know back to- back But I think, you know, its it's hard to win the West as many times in a row as the Bombers have. So I think it's a true test of a champion to kind of just handle your your start to the season and beat BC back to back.
01:00:03
Speaker
I agree. I agree. I think those are four solid picks, especially getting on them early like this. And this could be a big week. Like if we go 4-0 here, all of a sudden we are to start the CFL season.
01:00:16
Speaker
Yeah, you like we have not had a negative week. Well, I guess, you know, if you're giving up, we're two and two and three and one. So if we just, you know, two and two, three and one, four and oh every week, and we don't dip into the the one and three oh and fours, we will come out the season profitable.
01:00:32
Speaker
That is the goal ah to give the listeners some winning picks and help them make a little extra change. Absolutely. um But that'll do it for this week on the goal post. Get out there.
