Introduction to Solarpreneur Podcast
00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fail.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you how to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.
00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solopreneur, you might ask?
00:00:33
Speaker
A solopreneur is a new breed of solopro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery, and you are about to become one.
00:00:41
Speaker
What's going on, solopreneurs?
00:00:43
Speaker
We are back with another
Overcoming Comparison and Gratitude
00:00:44
Speaker
Today, we're going to be talking about how to stop comparing yourself with others and why maybe you should compare yourself with yourself.
00:00:52
Speaker
Okay, all that and a whole lot more coming up.
00:00:56
Speaker
We are here to help you close more deals, generate
00:00:59
Speaker
I almost said close more deers, tripping, generate more leads and referrals and have a much better time in the solar industry.
00:01:07
Speaker
Hope you're doing awesome.
00:01:09
Speaker
We're recording this right around Thanksgiving season.
00:01:12
Speaker
So I am grateful for all of the people listening to this podcast, all my peeps over on the show supporting this.
00:01:21
Speaker
Couldn't do it without y'all and just extremely grateful.
00:01:25
Speaker
But regardless of whenever you are listening to this, hopefully there is something you can be grateful about today.
00:01:32
Speaker
And that's part of what we're going to be talking
Sales Competition and Self-Reflection
00:01:34
Speaker
Okay, so today something I've been thinking a lot about and actually been struggling with a little bit myself, just getting a little vulnerable here.
00:01:43
Speaker
We recently finished up a big competition over here, you know, company-wide.
00:01:50
Speaker
And we were seeing people close deals left and right.
00:01:53
Speaker
It was a three-week competition.
00:01:56
Speaker
We had a dude close 31 deals.
00:02:00
Speaker
A few people closed like 31 deals in the three weeks.
00:02:04
Speaker
And several people closed in like six, seven.
00:02:07
Speaker
I think we had someone close like eight deals in a day.
00:02:10
Speaker
So we've all heard those crazy numbers.
00:02:13
Speaker
And I've had several people that have had numbers like that on the podcast.
00:02:18
Speaker
And, um, just being, just throwing it out there, my sales for the three weeks, I got a total of five sales and that was it.
00:02:29
Speaker
So something that I was struggling with, I'm like, man, I'm out here grinding, um, competition season.
00:02:36
Speaker
I feel like I put in a good effort.
00:02:38
Speaker
You know, I could have worked harder.
00:02:39
Speaker
There's, I had my moments where it was a little lazy, but for the most part, I feel like I was pushing hard the whole time.
00:02:45
Speaker
I was grinding and ended up with five sales.
00:02:49
Speaker
So it was, I started getting pretty down on myself.
00:02:52
Speaker
You know, I'm in week three of the competition.
00:02:54
Speaker
I'm at like, you know, three sales final week, two, three sales.
00:02:59
Speaker
And I'm like, what, what am I doing wrong here?
00:03:02
Speaker
I've closed 150 deals in a year.
00:03:04
Speaker
I'm the solopreneur.
00:03:06
Speaker
Why am I not seeing the same level of success as everybody else?
00:03:10
Speaker
So not going to lie, it was tough.
00:03:12
Speaker
Just finishing out the competition.
00:03:14
Speaker
Results weren't what I expected and weren't what I wanted, but hey, I'm still here.
00:03:19
Speaker
Still made good money, don't get me wrong.
00:03:22
Speaker
Made some good money and deals I closed, got some good commissions on them.
00:03:26
Speaker
But it was a team competition, so it wasn't like I was going head to head with
Impact of Comparison and Self-Improvement Strategies
00:03:30
Speaker
So at the end, it was kind of a bittersweet.
00:03:33
Speaker
We actually won the competition.
00:03:35
Speaker
It was a little bit bittersweet because I'm like, man,
00:03:38
Speaker
Our team won, but why didn't I contribute as much as I was hoping?
00:03:44
Speaker
So today I'm just going to talk to you about maybe you relate with this.
00:03:48
Speaker
Maybe you have had times where you felt the same, or maybe you're just closing everything you touch and you've never felt this way.
00:03:54
Speaker
If that's the case, you can skip the episode too if you want.
00:03:58
Speaker
But I think most of us have probably had times in our solar sales career, or maybe even we're just starting out,
00:04:05
Speaker
where we get in this negative mindset, we're comparing ourselves with others, we're not seeing the results we want, and we just can't get out of this funk.
00:04:15
Speaker
So I made some realizations, and I did a little research, and so I just want to talk through some of the things I realized and just talk about how it's, I think, affected my performance a little bit, comparing myself with everyone else.
00:04:31
Speaker
instead of just pushing hard myself.
00:04:33
Speaker
So I did a little bit of researching on this, just researching how does comparison hurt us.
00:04:41
Speaker
And what I found, this is according to a few articles from people that know science, researchers and all that.
00:04:47
Speaker
Comparison, number one, it's a waste of time.
00:04:50
Speaker
Grab the notes here.
00:04:52
Speaker
Number two, it lowers your self-esteem.
00:04:54
Speaker
Number three, it can give you anxiety and depression.
00:04:59
Speaker
We probably felt that when I was in the competition, I remember the last week, there were a few times where I was having appointments fall through.
00:05:07
Speaker
That was, I think, my biggest issue during this competition is I just had so many appointments fall through.
00:05:13
Speaker
And I would go into this appointment, even a few that were like solid.
00:05:17
Speaker
I had met with them one time and they're basically on board, but just didn't sign the docs.
00:05:23
Speaker
And they're like, oh, we'll sign for sure tomorrow.
00:05:26
Speaker
We all know how that goes, right?
00:05:28
Speaker
So I think on the last week I had that happen like four times where people just couldn't get them to sign push, push.
00:05:34
Speaker
And they're like, hey, come back tomorrow.
00:05:36
Speaker
We just don't want to sign it.
00:05:37
Speaker
I go back and of course they change their mind.
00:05:40
Speaker
Or they text me and say, hey, don't come back.
00:05:42
Speaker
And what I did is I let that get in my head and I let myself just like kind of get down, take a longer break than I should have instead of going out and pushing.
00:05:55
Speaker
And it was because I was comparing myself with others.
00:05:58
Speaker
All right, so that's what we're going to talk about.
00:06:00
Speaker
How can we stop comparing ourselves with other people?
00:06:04
Speaker
And some practical things we can do.
00:06:06
Speaker
I'm going to give you guys four things that a few of them I realized.
00:06:09
Speaker
A few of them are just from doing a little bit of research.
00:06:11
Speaker
Okay, so number one is evaluating your own performance.
00:06:15
Speaker
We probably all know the best way to improve is compare yourself with yourself.
00:06:19
Speaker
That's the one person you should be comparing yourself with.
00:06:24
Speaker
the you of yesterday, the you of last week, the you of last year.
00:06:28
Speaker
Yeah, you should compare yourself with that person.
00:06:30
Speaker
Okay, so something that I've found to just make that comparison and figure out are we actually comparing, we got to be measuring our progress.
00:06:39
Speaker
I've talked about this many times on the show, you should be tracking your KPIs, tracking your stats, and figuring out if you are really making that improvement.
00:06:48
Speaker
Hey, and then I think the best thing, the best, yeah, one of the best ways you can track this and make sure it's consistent is do your weekly planning.
00:07:00
Speaker
Hey, what I try to do every week, not perfect.
00:07:03
Speaker
But write out your wins, write out what happened good from the week, and then write out what can be approved.
00:07:08
Speaker
Just journal it, pen and paper.
00:07:12
Speaker
And this is one of the best things I've seen to really just make sure you're comparing yourself to yourself and improving.
00:07:20
Speaker
And one thing I actually didn't do this during the competition because I was going hard.
00:07:24
Speaker
I'm like, no, I don't need to do my weekly planning.
00:07:26
Speaker
So this probably would have helped.
00:07:28
Speaker
Hey, number two, how about have healthy competition?
00:07:31
Speaker
And I know we're saying don't compare.
00:07:34
Speaker
I just barely said don't compare yourself with others.
00:07:36
Speaker
But I think we do need to have the healthy competition.
00:07:40
Speaker
Something I was doing, I was comparing myself with the top guy at my company.
00:07:44
Speaker
And of course, I'm going to get depressed.
00:07:46
Speaker
Of course, I'm going to get depressed when I'm only at five deals and the top guy was at 30.
00:07:50
Speaker
Hey, so how about...
00:07:53
Speaker
not comparing yourself, but having the healthy competition with the guy that is one step ahead of you, with the guy that's about your same level.
00:08:00
Speaker
Hey, I heard this on another podcast.
00:08:03
Speaker
Can't remember which one it was, but someone said we should all have someone we're mentoring, someone we are coaching, and someone we're holding accountable, and then we should all have someone that we're competing with that's about our same level or just...
00:08:19
Speaker
a step ahead of us.
00:08:20
Speaker
And I think that's healthy.
00:08:22
Speaker
Um, when I say don't compare yourselves, I'm not saying don't have competition.
00:08:26
Speaker
I think that's one of the best ways to drive production to make improvements, but just don't be getting all depressed.
00:08:32
Speaker
Like if we're just starting our first day swimming laps in the pool, we're not going to compare ourselves with Michael Phelps.
00:08:39
Speaker
We're not going to compare ourselves with those guys.
00:08:41
Speaker
We want to have the healthy competition of the people that are just above our levels or at about the same levels.
00:08:47
Speaker
And it's funny, I actually see this in our office currently.
00:08:51
Speaker
Two of our top guys, they have, I think, almost weekly or monthly, they're calling each other like every other day.
00:08:59
Speaker
They're going out together.
00:09:00
Speaker
And these two guys, they go back and forth.
00:09:03
Speaker
They're like probably top five in our office.
00:09:05
Speaker
But they are always having this healthy competition.
00:09:07
Speaker
They're about the same level.
00:09:10
Speaker
One will win one week.
00:09:11
Speaker
One will win the other week.
00:09:13
Speaker
And they do this back and forth.
00:09:15
Speaker
Funny enough, they're crushing it.
00:09:17
Speaker
So I think it helps to have someone that you can compete with and then also someone you're mentoring, someone that you can hold accountable and hopefully they can hold you accountable to.
00:09:28
Speaker
And then number three, realize that you might not have the same goals as other people.
Aligning Goals with Actions
00:09:33
Speaker
I did a podcast with Ricardo Ritchie a few weeks back.
00:09:37
Speaker
I think it was now.
00:09:38
Speaker
You can go listen to it again.
00:09:39
Speaker
But something he talks about is he will have these one-on-one sit-downs with his people.
00:09:45
Speaker
And they'll say, oh, I want to close.
00:09:47
Speaker
I want to be just like you, Ricardo.
00:09:48
Speaker
I want to install 200 plus accounts next year.
00:09:52
Speaker
And then he'll ask them what their schedule is.
00:09:55
Speaker
And they're like, yeah, well, you know, we just hang out in the mornings.
00:09:59
Speaker
We go out at like three o'clock.
00:10:02
Speaker
And something he talked about is the way they talk, it's not aligning with what they want to do.
00:10:09
Speaker
Rather, their goals aren't matching up with their actions.
00:10:12
Speaker
So you need to realize for yourself, what's your vision?
00:10:15
Speaker
What's the sacrifice you're really willing to make to actually hit what you want to achieve?
00:10:20
Speaker
And when you are thinking of comparing yourself, are you comparing yourself with someone who has maybe been on like a blitz for the last two weeks and they're working 12 hour days?
00:10:30
Speaker
Maybe you're someone like myself.
00:10:34
Speaker
Say, so I know I'm not going to compare myself with someone that's out doing a blitz.
00:10:39
Speaker
You know, maybe they just came out, flew out here.
00:10:42
Speaker
They're going full steam ahead for three weeks at a time.
00:10:47
Speaker
Um, yeah, like maybe I'm just, maybe I'm spending the time with my family in the mornings.
00:10:53
Speaker
So remember, you need to check yourself, figure out what your vision is, figure out what your goals are.
00:10:58
Speaker
And everyone's going to have seasons, right?
00:11:01
Speaker
So this last three weeks, I was going full steam ahead.
00:11:04
Speaker
But also, there's other times where I know I'm taking my foot off the gas a little bit.
00:11:09
Speaker
I got to spend a little time with the family.
00:11:11
Speaker
So realize what those seasons are for you.
00:11:13
Speaker
And don't compare yourself with other people that are in the season of grinding, going full steam ahead.
00:11:20
Speaker
But don't use that as an excuse either.
00:11:22
Speaker
And then last but not least, speaking of Thanksgiving season that we're recording this podcast around,
00:11:28
Speaker
is you need to practice gratitude in everything you do.
00:11:33
Speaker
I think if you can have this gratitude mindset, it opens up the world, right?
00:11:38
Speaker
You're seeing things through the gratitude lenses.
00:11:41
Speaker
And one of my favorite podcasts, I keep referencing old podcasts, it's because I've had some amazing guests on here.
00:11:47
Speaker
But Earl Capulli, he is the gratitude man.
00:11:49
Speaker
He's gratitude mindset.
00:11:52
Speaker
When we were managing a team together, he would always have our team list out at most every meeting that I can remember, we would list out things we were grateful for.
00:12:02
Speaker
And he got us in the habit of just doing this three things a day that we're grateful for.
00:12:09
Speaker
And what I realized, it's almost impossible to think negative.
00:12:12
Speaker
It's almost impossible to, you know, start envying people, comparing yourself when you're practicing gratitude in your life.
00:12:22
Speaker
Start making that a habit.
00:12:24
Speaker
Journal three things every day.
00:12:26
Speaker
There's a lot of planners that have this too.
00:12:30
Speaker
Most planners that I've gotten, they have bullet lists, three things that you're grateful for that day, three wins.
00:12:36
Speaker
And it just gets you focusing on the positive, right?
00:12:40
Speaker
And it's the same principle.
00:12:43
Speaker
Forget what that's called, but when you're buying a car, you see that same car on the road that you were looking to buy in.
00:12:50
Speaker
when you didn't see it before because now that opened up your perspective right so same thing with gratitude when you're thinking of things to be grateful for that's what you're gonna see right but if you're thinking um i suck compared to this guy oh this has been a terrible week terrible month then you're gonna track those things in your life as well okay so these are some things that i got away from and i think i dropped the ball on a little bit during our competition hey and i know hey
00:13:19
Speaker
I might lose some, but I'm still undefeated.
Mindset and Resilience
00:13:22
Speaker
Just because I only finished with five cells in the three weeks, that doesn't define me.
00:13:27
Speaker
I'm the solopreneur, baby.
00:13:28
Speaker
I'm going to get out there.
00:13:29
Speaker
I'm going to keep grinding.
00:13:30
Speaker
So I hope you can have a positive mindset.
00:13:33
Speaker
I hope that even as you take some losses, take some fists to the face.
00:13:38
Speaker
Remember, just like Rocky said, it's not about how hard you can hit.
00:13:43
Speaker
It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
00:13:48
Speaker
So keep that in mind.
00:13:49
Speaker
Hope you have a very grateful holiday season, Thanksgiving season.
00:13:54
Speaker
We're going to be back with you next week.
00:13:56
Speaker
We've got some killer interviews we are recording and there will not be a podcast this coming Friday.
00:14:04
Speaker
We're going to give it a holiday Thanksgiving and then we're going to be back at you next Tuesday.
00:14:10
Speaker
So hope you have an awesome week.
00:14:11
Speaker
I'm grateful for everybody.
00:14:13
Speaker
Love you guys and we'll see you on the next one.
