All the history we read in the history books can begin to seem a little mundane, but history also has a Flipside. Each month we take an historical event anniversary and, admittedly sometimes tenuously, extract a discussion topic from it, then we ask guests from the history, archaeology and heritage spheres to sit down and have a chat with us about it... no holds barred; these discussions could head off in any number of tangents. Ever wondered how suffragette martyr Emily Wilding Davison, a little-known hieroglyph specialist and the modern gender pay-gap are linked, well except from all being in one single episode of Flipside that is... listen and find out! And as always, stay safe, and we'll see you on the Flipside! #OnTheFlipside

Introduction to Archaeology Podcast Network

Speaker
You're listening to the Archaeology Podcast Network.

Purpose of Flipside Podcast

00:00:03
Speaker
The concept of flipside podcast is a little out of the ordinary, but on the basic level we take an event from the past and we use that event to inspire discussion within the disciplines of archaeology, history and heritage.

The Role of Interdisciplinary Guests

00:00:20
Speaker
Our guests come from all manner of backgrounds and specialisms, and their links to our monthly event might at first seem tenuous, but just wait until the discussion starts.
00:00:35
Speaker
There is no end of value in interdisciplinary studies, and what our guests turn up in our recorded discussions is almost always outside the box, and surely that can only be a good thing.

Unexpected Tangents in Discussions

00:00:50
Speaker
Why flipside? Flipside because oft times we begin with the discussions people might expect, and end up on tangents which uncover quite the other side of events. For example, suffragettes.

Speaker
We all know of Emily Wilding Davison, but what links her to a little-known hieroglyph specialist and the modern gender pay gap? We've all heard of the mighty Hadrian's Wall, but what links that to a spooky haunted woodland?
00:01:23
Speaker
and modern border control systems, other than the fact that they can all be heard discussed in a single flipside episode that is.

Value of Diverse Conversations

00:01:32
Speaker
It's not intentional, and we're not boasting. This is just what happens when you put people who study things so differently in one metaphorical room and give them something to discuss.

Podcast Aims and Listener Experience

00:01:45
Speaker
It is quite simple really, but we've found it works. Why do we do this? Well, because we hope firstly that you, our listeners, enjoy the experience, but also because we hope to encourage others out there to have the same utterly unscripted vortex inducing and perhaps just a bit whimsical talks with your friends, with your pals, with your colleagues.
00:02:13
Speaker
And with luck, this might just mean we're able to understand some things just a little better. But hey, if you stop at enjoying the episode, well, that's good enough for us. Stay tuned and stay safe.
