Elias Hansen: All right, welcome back, episode six. um We had planned kind of like a more basketball nerdy podcast. And honestly... you know we were doing I was looking into teams. Charlie was looking into teams. Just getting a little dry.
Elias Hansen: Um... but Thankfully... Yesterday, was Media Day. And. kind of Cool, kind of not cool. We have some things we're going to talk about.
Elias Hansen: uh from oh it's cool it's exciting it's good content but some uh maybe a little drama Cooking up something definitely worth talking about and something I've seen a lot of people talking about.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: So we're going to start today with the GQ. Piece which is an awesome piece. Well, we'll go into it the GQ article with Stefan Castle and Dylan Harper. And then Charlie and I will just kind of bounce back and forth about some things we thought. We're interesting of note.
Elias Hansen: from Spurs media yesterday, really the kickoff. of... kind of the season, honestly. So that's what we're thinking today. Charlie, you excited?
Charlie: Super excited. I was joking before this that like this is probably the most actual like Spurs updates we've had.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: in in a, in a few months. So there's, there's, there's more to talk about.
Elias Hansen: Yep. yeah Oh, and I should... i should I should note I'm fully decked out in Red Sox gear for game one of the...
Charlie: um
Elias Hansen: AL Wild Card Series, Red Sox -Yankees. Gonna be fun. Um...
Charlie: There we are.
Elias Hansen: Yeah. Gonna be fun. But anyways. let's let's let's jump into it uh yes you're totally right this feels like the first maybe well I think it's pretty noteworthy. I think it's definitely worth talking about. Maybe it feels even more noteworthy because we've been just like absolutely starved of any kind of Spurs, real Spurs content since.
Elias Hansen: probably late June. Um,
Charlie: mm -hmm
Elias Hansen: but If you haven't read it yet. Everyone should go read the GQ story. called here i haven't pulled up uh Can the and NBA's new dynamic duo get the Spurs to the promised land? GQ did an interview with Steph Castle and Dylan Harper. Lots of really...
Elias Hansen: It's fun. It's a cool story. They're very much. themselves. Um,
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: And good segue. Into them being themselves. I'm just going to read. I'm going to read in full the part that caught a lot of people's eyes. um in Spurs land and nbn and NBA land all around.
Elias Hansen: So, quote, Harper and Castle discussing how short this offseason has felt for the pair when a smile erupts across Harper's face. I'm going to win sixth man of the year this year, he says.
Elias Hansen: No, you're not bro. Castle Scots. The reference to the prize awarded to the best player who comes off the bench. is surprising. Only a month earlier at press conference after the finals, teammate Devin Vassell suggested that Harper had been frustrated with, quote, playing time and different roles that he was in.
Elias Hansen: I'm going to win sixth man of the year, Harper insists. You're not going to be six man. Castle says, who are you going to be six man for? I don't fucking know. God, Harper says, which. I'll you know pause. I don't get that.
Elias Hansen: What does that mean?
Charlie: happy
Elias Hansen: Does God need a sixth man? I don't.
Charlie: Amen.
Elias Hansen: Okay. You don't actually think you're going to come off the bench, do you? I cut in. the interviewer. What's the political answer here, Harper says, looking down at the recorder. He calibrates his voice into its cheeriest pitch.
Elias Hansen: I'm going to do whatever the team needs me to do, man. If that's come off the bench. He stops. That's crazy. Fuck no. I ain't coming off no bench. Quote bro, all you got to know is you going to be in the starting lineup Castle says ending the discussion. Be ready to hoop.
Elias Hansen: Later in the conversation, Harper walks the six -man thing back. I was lying, he said. I had a smile on my face.
Elias Hansen: i don't know it's it's it's i i've heard different takes about this over the past like two days or whatever because every you know Zach Lowe talked about this. Brian Windhorst talked about this.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: um But this is reigniting a debate and worry that we had at the end of the finals that I kind of thought was dead and buried.
Charlie: Blah.
Elias Hansen: And here we are. back again. um Mitch Johnson was asked about this. Mitch Johnson did a lot of evading, a lot of political answers at Media Day this year. He said he doesn't envision anyone being in the starting lineup yet. Everyone's going to have...
Elias Hansen: big roles. So I'll stop there. I'll let you give your thoughts, Charlie, but all I'm going to say right now is The door is open. The door is open.
Charlie: Definitely. Yeah, and I feel like... You know, it's funny because this is really you started this by saying like it was a really honest look at their personalities and they really kind of shined through And I feel like that's totally because you can totally like when you read the whole.
Charlie: like interview because once this drops like it took like the news and like Instagram basketball cycle like a few hours to pick it up and then it was like only that one quote like fuck no i ain't coming off the bench
Elias Hansen: Yep.
Charlie: and it was like and just that alone it was like oh my god like this is the headline this is like The drama, everybody wants to hear. like you know, the guy that like the one guy I think everyone in the and NBA loves. And then.
Charlie: the one guy that most people like don't like kind of it's that drama re -sparked up and I think that You know, there's there's been so many different moments of this like when Dylan Harper accidentally reposted that thing on TikTok where...
Elias Hansen: Yes, I forgot about that.
Charlie: it was like it was like a meme and that was during the playoffs
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: It was like a meme, like one of those just like AI generated memes. And it was just like slandering De 'Aaron Fox. He quickly like unreposted it.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: And then, you know, you had Devin Vassell's comment after a game. And so there's been all these little things. This feels like the most. Probably direct.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: version of this, but it's it's also like I think if you take a step back it. more than anything like like if you If you don't think about all the other stuff happening, like all the slander Fox is getting, you know how people might be feeling about him.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: like all the like little things that have made this seem more dramatic than it is like Ultimately, like you do want. you know players that want to play and want to impact the game and want to win You know what I mean?
Elias Hansen: Yes. Totally.
Charlie: and like i think that i think that's like ultimately like the number one thing to think about
Elias Hansen: You're right.
Charlie: With this and like Dylan Harper was asked about this, like a few days later at the and NBA media day, which we're going to. Spurs media day, which we can get into more later.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: But he when he was asked about it. um About the storyline and his place on the depth chart, he said, i feel like it's just competitive nature everyone has a competitive edge to them But the biggest thing for me is whatever I can do, just like yeah last year to help. the team win, and whatever position that all the coaches think is best for me to be in. That's the position I have to go in.
Elias Hansen: yeah
Charlie: And then he said, whatever happens this year. Just know it ain't going to be no bad nothing for me. I'm always going to stay positive and be the forefront. I'm just keeping the team together. So.
Elias Hansen: There's a lot of ways I think you can look at this, to be honest.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: And Charlie, I think you're taking the right approach as a Spurs fan to just like be positive. and like that's that's ah blah blah blah I'm gonna be honest.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: Reading this. It was an alarm bell to me and I don't mean to be alarmist and I don't mean to, you know, you know, start freaking out over absolutely nothing.
Charlie: Mm hmm.
Elias Hansen: But listen, in an article where... Clearly, they are representing... Apparently, players think it's that GQ is the place to like be yourself, I guess. I don't...
Charlie: Yeah. this
Elias Hansen: what But I'm going to like the Players' Tribune. but Anyways. This is, this is a. problem. If... It is. actually his true sentiment about coming off the bench.
Elias Hansen: And like you said, he gave he walked it back a little bit in media day. but When you have two teammates, start because...
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: We talked about this in the very first podcast we did. It's not time yet for Dylan Harper to come off the bench. Now. maybe if you Can you get creative? You play like a three -guard lineup. you know Spurs went to multi -guard lineups more in the playoffs to help control some of those turnovers. It's possible.
Elias Hansen: Does this even open the door? For Fox taking... a bench roll. which might be exciting. But realistically, this is the season Fox has to rehab his trade value because hopefully, I think we trade him so we avoid a lot of financial constraints down the line.
Elias Hansen: All that to say, you're right. Like this is the attitude you want your players to have. However, Eat. is the one thing, it's the one thing I can think about apart from injuries.
Elias Hansen: that I think could throw a wrench into this season. It's a great problem to have. Every coach wants to have the problem. of we have too many good players. And we need to figure out how to best use all of them and keep them happy. That's the goal is to have that problem. but that problem can be debilitating and it's a thunder they recently i mean The Thunder is a bad example because they're probably going to be even better this year.
Elias Hansen: And. It doesn't work this way. But what I'm trying to say is that we saw them have a lot of great players and there'd be enough of a log jam. that they just kind of had to dump. really high caliber players. and Having a log jam at certain positions and specifically at like the one and two spot for the spurs It's going to get interesting.
Elias Hansen: And... I'll be this this article i honestly like at first i was i was scrolling through instagram and i was like swiping through these pictures of them like into covas on a truck and i was like this is so tough like should i repost this on my instagram story like this is awesome and then i was like i should read the article if i should just look at the pictures like a five -year -old And I read the quote and I was like,
Charlie: Yeah. has been yeah
Elias Hansen: Whoa. ah Because I'd heard the take that, and I agreed that, like... Harper. is probably like the chalk candidate for sixth man of the year. If the lineup goes the way we're thinking about it.
Elias Hansen: Um, But it concerns me a little bit. I think it's like something to take note of. It just is like... i had accepted within myself that this idea that there was discontent about not getting starting minutes.
Elias Hansen: like I put that out of my brain. but it just made it feel all the more real. Again. Um, And there are some other things in media day that we can get into that probably like calmed me down a little bit.
Elias Hansen: but uh does Does Harper start? Does Fox, and I don't think so. I can't imagine a world where that would happen, but like. So many possibilities have been opened up. by Dylan Harper saying, i'm fuck that, I'm going to start.
Elias Hansen: And Stefan Castle saying, yeah, you're not going to come off the bench. Like what bench are you talking about? like Woo!
Charlie: Well, that's that's that's another thing that people are not talking about enough is that, bro, Castle was such an instigator and like in that interaction.
Elias Hansen: Yeah. Yeah.
Charlie: we're like like fox had the or not uh harper had the answer like nailed and then and then castle like
Elias Hansen: Yes, I'm going to be sixth man of the year. Perfect.
Charlie: yeah Yeah, and Castle was just like... what What the hell are you talking about? And i think I think it's like...
Elias Hansen: Ugh.
Charlie: I can see how like, you know, especially like, you know, that's like when you're like closest friends on the team and y 'all are like kind of. Messing around with each other. You also probably believe in each other the most And so I could see how like.
Charlie: around him like that might you know, reveal a different. side of how he's feeling. But, um yeah, I mean, definitely, like...
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: It is like. the probably the biggest thing outside of injury that could get in the way of this team this year. And it's something that's like been bubbling up and it's an unfortunate, like.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: Consequence? of Just like. the state of like media and sports nowadays where like you know you can do these these interviews and these one -off quotes that just kind of
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: go around and it's it's not just like. like the fans consuming that, it's like all the players are going to see that as well. You know what I mean?
Elias Hansen: Yep.
Charlie: And I...
Elias Hansen: Totally. Yeah.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: Yeah. We don't, I mean, we don't... We don't have to go into the rabbit hole on this because... It's it's a little bit more detailed than than need be, but like the Spurs take a step back. if De 'Aaron Fox is not the leading point guard. i truly believe that like i think i forgot who said it but like without fox if you Put Harper in the starting role now. like You increase your championship window odds. maybe over the next four years, and you decrease them for this year.
Elias Hansen: And if you keep Fox in the starting lineup and let him play more, you might decrease them in the future, especially if he stays on the team, but increase them for this year. um how Good of a chance. Do you think you have this year? Championships are not easy to come by.
Elias Hansen: Listen. it All I'm saying is that. I think. I personally think, and I would imagine that the Spurs staff probably thinks the same. De 'Aaron Fox has to start.
Elias Hansen: Dylan Harper has to get a lot of minutes. De 'Aaron Fox has to be the starting point guard. There are just too many problems that come up if he isn't And... I'll call. Cut myself off. But this quote just made me think.
Elias Hansen: We can't say. We're going to put the team first and say, fuck no, I'm not coming off the bench. at the same time. Those don't work together.
Charlie: Yeah. Yeah.
Elias Hansen: So we'll see what wins, I guess.
Charlie: Yeah. And so, yeah.
Elias Hansen: We'll see what wins.
Charlie: and And I do think that, like... there's There's definitely, I mean. as much as as good as he can probably be at like you know trying to buy into the team like that's probably how every player is going to feel deep down.
Charlie: when it when it comes down to it.
Elias Hansen: It's a good point. That's true. That's true.
Charlie: And so we'll see. We'll see how it goes. But I agree. I don't see a world in which. Fox isn't starting. You know what I mean?
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: Like, it's got to be at least like.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: Unless like something crazy some crazy development happens throughout the season
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: of like his abilities, but I just I just, i would it kind of. ah like i guess i appreciate ms johnson's like political like non -specific answer but I feel like there's there's not really a question of.
Charlie: Harper actually starting. at at least at the beginning of the season.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: Yeah, agreed.
Charlie: But.
Elias Hansen: Well, let's let's move in. Let's jump move on and jump in to media day. um i have a I have like... four little things none of them that exciting but just kind of interesting that i thought were good
Charlie: Mm hmm.
Elias Hansen: Um... But, Charlie, you want you want to kick it off with some of the things you thought? or most notable worth worth talking about?
Charlie: yeah definitely I feel like the two main Spurs clips I've seen go viral over the past uh few days has been the Harper clip and then Wembe. kind of getting into What?
Charlie: that finals loss felt like.
Elias Hansen: Yep. Totally.
Charlie: And um I have this quote right here. And it was this is the question was like. what like how did you go about dealing with that finals loss. And this is what he said. He said, it's not over like the feeling of that loss. It's not over. It evolves with time.
Charlie: But I've had a few sleepless nights, maybe not sleepless, but hard to find sleep. There's just a point where you accept that you have to go through it. and You have to feel all of it. We don't want to hide from anything, so we're going to face these emotions, face the reality that we have 100 games to play.
Charlie: to get back to the and NBA finals. And this is the reality of it. We're in a great spot. We're very hopeful, very ambitious, and we're ready. And so that that is like, you know, the sleepless nights part is again, you get that one like AI photo and it's like sleepless nights like.
Elias Hansen: Yep. so so
Charlie: caption and it's all over Instagram.
Elias Hansen: ah ah
Charlie: But I mean, that that makes total sense. And I think that like... That. It's... It's interesting how like... you know the nature of the offseason you haven't really been able to like get direct responses from the players about a very like consequential Like...
Charlie: postseason. And so it's it's been it's been interesting and nice to kind of hear where they're at right now.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: And when we went on to sit talk about a lot about how he was.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: really inspired and like touched by the fact that so many of the players came out to france with him and he said it was even emotional for him the same thing with fox like hosting players that was right when tobias harris got signed and he was there at the training facility like working out with them And so. I think that the ultimate takeaway is that they're Like are not trying to like pretend like it didn't happen They're not hiding away from it like it it sucks and they all like will admit that
Charlie: But I think it is like the best. motivation that they could have.
Elias Hansen: completely yeah i that this was one of the main things i had written down too is that Especially that... that uh point of like them coming to France and having some emotional conversations emotional nights like this collective heartbreak.
Elias Hansen: is the perfect motivator. You don't get a better motivator for a team to go out and win a bunch of games in a season.
Charlie: Hmm.
Elias Hansen: um Case in point 2013 to 2014.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: um Spurs like. This is exactly what everybody was saying before the playoffs this year, that this team had to kind of like cut their teeth. And. Hmm.
Elias Hansen: taste their own blood a little bit in the playoffs before they could really get anywhere. and They made it all the way.
Charlie: and
Elias Hansen: they ah overcame what they thought was their biggest opponent. Um, And what I liked about, like, I've... You know. Yes, this is this is exactly what I want to hear from the team. What I liked hearing from Wendy too is him describing, you know, the... definition of what success is now in a season has changed.
Elias Hansen: Like the definition is now we want to be the number one.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: Like it it seemed pretty clear in those quotes that it's like, not just win the West. We want to be the one seed in the West through the regular season.
Charlie: Yeah. Mm -hmm.
Elias Hansen: Then we want to. And he recognized that like we're going to have to move some very good teams out of the way. There was no sense of like... where the whole team is back and we're going back to the finals. We really want to go back to the finals and we are heartbroken that we did not win the finals.
Elias Hansen: And we understand that. There's going to be some incredibly tough competition. um going through the west and
Charlie: mm -hmm
Elias Hansen: Yeah, I think like the crying together as a team and like going to someone's house and like bonding over over some drama bonding is
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: Exactly what. we want. for this team. That is perfect.
Charlie: Totally. And I also saw... um In regards to that that that specific quote where he was talking about, now it's like the expectation that we're the number one. team in the West.
Charlie: and it's also he he had another quote where it was like it honestly feels right like it feels like It felt weird when we weren't in this position. Now it feels right that we're in this position. And I think that's just like. It's been such a weird trajectory because...
Charlie: you know, We got really lucky with all these. you know, great picks starting with Wemby and then Wemby had it got injured and then he had, you know, the.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: blood clot and all these things where it was like everyone knew it was It was all working. to like a very special place and this year is just like the culmination of all that
Elias Hansen: Yep.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: Um, And I also, I saw Fox was was asked about like how he played in the finals or in the playoffs in general and you know his thoughts on that and he talked a little bit about how he wished he played better He said, I moved on from it. It definitely stuck with me.
Charlie: For a while, you think about it, but you don't want to let that dwell on you for the rest of the time you play basketball. Someone has to win, someone has to lose.
Elias Hansen: Yep.
Charlie: And I think that like. That is part of what makes. Like it's two things. It's a part of that kind of response is what makes Fox such a good player and like the first Clutch Player of the Year because he can just kind of...
Charlie: doesn't let things dwell on him too long but like that also i've i've seen fans like also get upset by that same like kind of attitude or like he's able to brush things off which is like a great thing like as a player
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: who's gonna you know show up the next day and do the same thing But it's it's funny that like, you know, I've like. even in like the comments on that like people still had something to say like oh, like he doesn't care you know as much as he should.
Charlie: But I think that I think it's it's good that he's able to talk about it and like able to brush it off because.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: there is I think he really has. But on the receiving end of like. So much.
Elias Hansen: Oh yeah.
Charlie: negative energy like way more than was warranted.
Elias Hansen: Oh yeah. i think I think with all of these like quotes about how players are feeling, I'm going to be really interested. I think more so than any other season.
Elias Hansen: like the like my favorite Vic quote of like, I refuse to carry the i have carry the burden of hiding my emotions.
Charlie: Hmm.
Elias Hansen: like Very clearly, this team is like... Going to be pretty expressive. about what they're thinking how the season's going if they want to start or not
Charlie: a
Elias Hansen: And. For a long time, like these comments didn't really hold much weight. It was a little bit like great like we're getting to learn more about these players and we're seeing like how it fits on a team And now we kind of have a blueprint of a team that can make the finals and hopefully win it if they're a little bit more mature in their decision -making.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: And so these, these little insights about like,
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: what they're thinking about the team and how frustrating something is. and all of these little like sides of personality, they become, you know, you don't want to like. put hang your hat too much on like a random quote from a postgame interview but like I feel like the Devin Vassell postgame of that finals run is the perfect example of this is where it's like you hear something that in the past probably would have just like whizzed right over your head it's like oh Dylan Harper wants to play more great like we got a young guy who's ready to like attack
Charlie: um
Charlie: Hmm.
Elias Hansen: um But now like these pieces mean a little bit more.
Charlie: hanging
Elias Hansen: like The idea of them collectively be all being really upset by this loss. and Fox saying he's going to wash these off. and and look forward that one's a little bit more political but i think like these little comments and quotes now.
Elias Hansen: They mean probably a lot more and you can. draw a lot more from them, especially when, like I said, like Vic. Clearly not going to hide anything. um He's not going to like. be a a like a Kawhi Leonard type.
Elias Hansen: I guess.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: Inshallah. He's not going to get quiet letter type, which speaking, OK, little tangent.
Charlie: Yeah. and
Elias Hansen: But... Piss me off absolute bullshit at Kawhi's presser
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: He was like... I'm not gonna answer any questions about the investigation. or anything to do with the Clippers. And then a reporter was like, are you still, a you like to laugh? You're still a fun guy.
Elias Hansen: they like oh Like that is ridiculous. The biggest scandal, the NBA seed and Kawhi gets to just be like, I paid my fine.
Charlie: Crazy.
Elias Hansen: Like I'm good. We're not going to talk about that. Move on. Anyways, that's a tangent.
Charlie: Yeah. Crazy.
Elias Hansen: but I... Going back to what I was saying, I think these types of little interviews and quotes and things that come out are going to be a lot more helpful to understand.
Elias Hansen: the team dynamic when it's already performing at ah a really high level or maybe it's not performing at a high level and we get a quote or a piece of reporting that it's like oh maybe this this can explain a little bit more about why this is happening.
Charlie: Yeah, totally. it's it's like It's just a part of that.
Elias Hansen: No.
Charlie: like you know as as the team grows and changes, like the goalposts kind of move. And now it's like the expectations are different and it's not like.
Elias Hansen: Exactly.
Charlie: It's like the windows for winning championships are so small and fleeting in the NBA. It's like if you are within that window. Like everything matters and that everyone, everyone knows that everything feels more.
Elias Hansen: Yep.
Charlie: like higher stakes more pressure and there's you know all these things that are you know affecting the players and the coaching staff. and
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: So, yeah, I completely agree with you. i um
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: it also i this is another tangent but ah another quote that I actually think was from the GQ article was Castle talking about how um This got a lot of...
Elias Hansen: I have something written down from this and I'm wondering if it's the same thing.
Charlie: A lot of like. It was they got a lot of, like, kind of... Like. negative comments as well but he was saying that msg was like a bit underwhelming
Elias Hansen: Okay. Oh, okay. yeah yeah yeah
Charlie: And... And he was like, honestly, like everybody hyped it up. you know the craziest. arena in the world but it was nothing compared to o OKC.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: And I thought that was so funny because like that's one thing I've seen so many players talk about was that. o OKC building is like the hardest arena to play in.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: And, uh...
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: in the league and
Elias Hansen: Yeah, no, I've i've heard that.
Charlie: Amen.
Elias Hansen: like i I knew OKC was one of the loudest. And also, I've heard i've never seen a game at MSG, but like I have heard, like because there's not the typical... like noise filling like like a sound effect or like a you know some sort of strange song that it's just really purely the crowd noise that like when msg is loud
Charlie: Amen. Mm -hmm. Mm hmm.
Elias Hansen: It gets really really loud.
Charlie: Mm hmm.
Elias Hansen: What? there's lulls in the noise, unlike kind of other. and NBA arenas. But yeah, I have seen that. like like that With like a picture of Stefan Castle shooting a fadeaway and it says like ah it was underwhelming or something.
Charlie: Yeah. is
Elias Hansen: Yeah. the The thing that I was going to say that I think came out of that article that I had written down is that there's a, they're talking about like all of them all being like young guys, blah, blah, blah. Like they hang out.
Elias Hansen: And there's a quote where basically they're like they like let loose, basically, one night. So I'm assuming, and this was after this was. a win against Houston. It was a really great win. And it wasn't said explicitly, but it was like.
Elias Hansen: pretty clearly laid out. that they got drunk. And Vic. does not drink. He's like, Ben said that he he doesn't drink. ed he And if you look at his stat, we lost to Charlotte the next game, basically.
Elias Hansen: now That was the night of the 30th.
Charlie: ah
Elias Hansen: And the 31st, we played Charlotte in a really bad loss.
Charlie: Yeah. Yes.
Elias Hansen: And when we played really bad, and there are like pictures of him, people have been tweeting about it, of him during warm -ups, and he has like dark circles under his eyes, and he's like...
Charlie: man
Elias Hansen: Like, happy friends! So we definitely had ah our first hangover game.
Charlie: hand
Elias Hansen: From Vic. on the 31st loss of the Hornets which is hilarious and it's good to hear that he's not just like this like monk like figure who like just speaks and like literature quotes to his teammates and is actually a normal person. But I thought that was pretty funny.
Charlie: That is so funny.
Elias Hansen: ah
Charlie: i didn't I haven't seen the Twitter threads of connecting the actual game to that.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: That is so good.
Elias Hansen: Yeah, I saw most of like his stats and then pictures of him during warm -ups. but My king was hungover.
Charlie: That is so funny
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: Okay.
Charlie: Yeah, that is so funny.
Elias Hansen: I know. the The only other, like, the honestly, the last thing I had written down, but another funny thing is that, like, There were quotes that... I heard someone say, I think it was Michael C. Wright was saying like, it feels like every time you interview Vic, like you have to go back and look something up.
Elias Hansen: and he was saying how... Vic was training his vestibular system.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: Which I didn't know what the vestibular system was ah before I heard that.
Charlie: Son of a...
Elias Hansen: But apparently when he was training in the south of France with a rugby team.
Charlie: Mm hmm.
Elias Hansen: That was part of training his vestibular system, which is your inner ear. and your balance.
Charlie: Mm hmm.
Elias Hansen: I guess. which like i've heard i've heard takes of like kind of criticizing the monk thing and i push back on that but for whatever reason I was a little bit like.
Elias Hansen: This is a little ridiculous.
Charlie: This is too far this is too
Elias Hansen: like this are two This is a little much. I'm working on our balance. I don't know, but I thought that was funny. that Maybe the biggest ah thing that he paid attention to was his inner ear.
Elias Hansen: His vestibular system.
Charlie: Yeah. I think I was reading that too. And it sounded like the the rugby team was actually like. a great experience just to see how connected like the team coaches and the fans were and that's and he was like
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: felt like very accepted by it but i was i also had to look up what the stimulus system was it
Elias Hansen: but yeah Yeah. okay
Charlie: But yeah, I...
Elias Hansen: Oh, the ah the only other thing I had written down, and then I'm out. Then I can pass it to you, but... Did you see the... picture of the Spurs like Classic Edition jersey.
Elias Hansen: or whatever.
Charlie: Yes. Yeah.
Elias Hansen: The gray.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: the old logo. That is awesome. I'm so excited for those i'm gonna have to get my hands on one that's more money out of my wallet but those are awesome
Charlie: So sick.
Charlie: This is going to be worth it.
Elias Hansen: If you haven't seen them and you're listening, you should look them up.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: The Spurs new like classic edition jerseys. They're super cool. Gray with the old Spurs lettering and the old kind of Spur logo. Um, Super cool.
Charlie: Super sick. I only had one more. quote And it was just...
Elias Hansen: Okay, what you got?
Charlie: it was It wasn't any, like... exciting development or drama. It was more just a circling around. barnes or
Elias Hansen: Mm hmm.
Charlie: um And because he's kind of, you know. In all the news of the offseason, I feel like that's one person nobody's heard anything about.
Elias Hansen: Yeah. Classic.
Charlie: And. um It was. It was really cool because I think the reporters... They were talking to him like... you know the veteran he is and like how you know he's taking on this different role and now he's been with the Spurs for a little bit now.
Charlie: and what that's like being here and why he chooses to be here even if you know with our new um you know, draft picks like... taking even like a less of a role because he started last year for the first half of the season and then was bumped out.
Charlie: by Julian Champagny and then eventually became even like a third string.
Elias Hansen: Right.
Charlie: um making some appearances in the playoffs just because of his experience but He had this to say in this business, a lot of times you don't have that opportunity. But for me, I genuinely enjoy my teammates and I've enjoyed the progress and outcome that we built here specifically in these couple of years. I'm happy to be here.
Charlie: And so it was like a really. Like. I don't know.
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: it's it's You forget.
Elias Hansen: A pro's pro.
Charlie: Because you you hear all these like headlines of like all the young guys just saying whatever or going out, having the hungover Charlotte game.
Elias Hansen: is
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: But ah it's cool to also hear that there's like... you know some good veterans there that are
Elias Hansen: Yeah.
Charlie: happy with where they're at and happy to be a part of you know where the team is at.
Elias Hansen: Totally. that Yeah, Harrison Barnes. is the best he gives like so much money to so many like give a bunch of money to like
Charlie: of
Elias Hansen: SAC like the San Antonio Community College like right after he got there
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: Great dude. Shout out Harrison Barnes. and had All serious to shout out Harrison Barnes. But I think that is a good one to end on because a few exciting notes. So we'll have...
Elias Hansen: We'll have one more episode. um what i guess a couple weeks from now and then after that the season is starting. I mean, we you let's see, I'll look at a calendar right now, but yeah, we'll have one more episode in two weeks.
Charlie: Mm -hmm
Elias Hansen: And that'll be the last time we talk. Before. This. season kicks off against the thunder. which is super exciting.
Charlie: Season, it's, yeah.
Elias Hansen: um But it also means
Charlie: It starts on a Tuesday.
Elias Hansen: It starts on a Tuesday, which is okay.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: All right, whatever.
Charlie: Yeah. Yeah.
Elias Hansen: It'll be a good Tuesday. um but next Episode... First, we're going to have to talk about starting lineup. um
Charlie: who
Elias Hansen: It got even a little bit more exciting with this quote. The real question is at the four spot. I won't spoil it too much, but next time we talk, we're going to have to do a real. uh we'll think about what else we want to include but that'll be the last time we talk uh logistics We're probably going to start doing Wednesdays.
Elias Hansen: um and i did when you know We'll see if it works, but we'll try to do more regularly, maybe weekly. during the season. Unless, of course, there's a Spurs game we have to watch. um And then. Final thing, we're going to work out timing.
Elias Hansen: But we had a very... exciting piece of outreach from an Italian fan base. via instagram so we're gonna have to figure out a time to where we can talk to
Charlie: Amen.
Elias Hansen: the uh Italian representatives for Spurs fans. Some worldwide Spurs fans hear about. how they picked Spurs, what that, like, do how do they watch, like. You stay up, real well I guess it's like so it would be early in the morning or like middle middle of the night, like when you're watching games.
Charlie: flight reacts the next day like the highlights
Elias Hansen: How'd you become a fan? Yeah, exactly. It's just a highlight league anyway. Nobody watches the game. um So some exciting stuff. But we will plan to talk.
Elias Hansen: a couple weeks From tomorrow. recording this on a Tuesday, a couple weeks from tomorrow. And that'll be our last. off -season pod we made it we're gonna have seven off -season episodes somehow we found What is like...
Elias Hansen: Seven. episodes worth maybe like seven close to seven hours worth of of nonsense to rattle off takes about um and finally we're gonna have some basketball to talk about so get excited i'm hyped charlie it's almost there i've got playoff baseball to distract me
Charlie: Seven hours worth of. ah Yeah. Yes, sir. Yeah.
Elias Hansen: But pretty soon, 85 % of my non -work. Mental capacity will be dedicated to Spurs basketball again.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: I can't wait.
Charlie: oh i can't wait it's gonna be a great great opening night too i'm excited for all of it
Elias Hansen: It'll be great. Oh yeah. me too me too yeah yeah the the well i i landed the plane and then i'm adding another tangent but the thing we were thinking about doing was like Teams are most excited to watch non -spurs.
Elias Hansen: I'll just say there's a ton of really exciting teams. People are in new places. It's going to be a fantastic season. But we can talk about that more next time. um For now.
Charlie: Yeah.
Elias Hansen: Thanks for listening. Have a great rest of your Tuesday or whenever you're listening. We'll talk to you soon.
Charlie: Peace.
