Discovery and Consequences of the Necronomicon

00:00:00
Speaker
We found something.
00:00:03
Speaker
The Necronomicon. The Book of the Dead. You know they don't want me there. You're part of the family. Despite my warnings, they read from the book Unleashing Demons.
00:00:18
Speaker
Demons. Demons.

Hollywood's Portrayal of Smoking vs Reality

00:00:22
Speaker
God help us.
00:00:35
Speaker
back. Rick, how we doing, man? We're at the end of our long road, our long groovy road to Evil Dead Burn. You got a cigarette? Yeah.
00:00:48
Speaker
Cigarettes are back, baby. It's sick. It's sick. like Let's be honest here. I think the biggest proponent of keeping cigarettes cool is Hollywood.
00:00:59
Speaker
Like real life, I feel like cigarettes just aren't nearly as cool as they used to be. But there are so many movies that are like, hey, we're going to give this person, they're going to smoke a few cigarettes. This is how we're going to establish character.
00:01:13
Speaker
What's helping is how lame vaping looks. yeah People are like, I need to get back to the old tobacco. that That shit looks lame. yeah Just sucking on some plastic, a little puffs of vapor smoke.
00:01:26
Speaker
I think it's true. like if you If you have your movie protagonist smoke a cigarette, you associate them with being like tough and grizzled. and they're They're choosing something that's not great for them, but you understand why.
00:01:38
Speaker
If you choose your protagonist to vape, everyone's like, yeah problem they're a little bitch. They're a little bitch. Yeah, it's like it's like they're they're like they have a they're like emaciated in some way. Like I just need my little fix.

Tribute to Sam Neill and His Horror Legacy

00:01:51
Speaker
called nicotine fix a So we have a little bit of movie news if we want to jump into that real quick.
00:02:02
Speaker
Yeah, i guess I guess we do talk about horror movies ah in addition to the finally new release we're covering today. But talk about some other upcoming items to keep our eyes on. You can you can tee us off here.
00:02:16
Speaker
I'll get your least favorite part out of the way, Trav. In memoriam, rest in peace, one of our Scream Kings, Sam Neill. ah Obviously, everybody knows him from Jurassic Park, but also had a run in horror films. Yeah. um A true Scream King in the eighty s and 90s. Yeah, ah The Omen 3, which I have not seen, but I've heard like.
00:02:44
Speaker
but That's what you want to lead with ah out of his horror films? I feel like that's the. I'm going chronological. Okay. That's an 81. And then also in that same year, Possession in a thriller called Dead Calm in 89. And he kicks off the 90s with one of my favorite Carpenter movies in the mouth of madness.
00:03:01
Speaker
Great take on Lovecraftian horror. um and then Event Horizon, which ah another huge blind spot. love You've seen that and Possession. Yes. I've seen all three of them. Well, the the three big Sam Neill horror films. Yeah, those are... Possession, Event Horizon, and in The Mouth of Madness. And I...
00:03:18
Speaker
I highly recommend all three. you know i keep my own. I think it's going to top 200 horror films. I recommend everyone. All three of those are in there. All three of them might even be like top 100. Possessions is up there for one of the best female lead acting performances of all time in horror movie.
00:03:35
Speaker
Do you have someone helping helping you manage that top 200 list yet, Trav? Has a listener reached out and offered their services to volunteer? Very few people, I tease it, very few people show that much interest. it's mainly self-indulgent or or really for me and you to just go back and forth in curating our own list.
00:03:51
Speaker
Oh, it's excellent it's oh it's it's a nightly ritual for me. Every night i'm doing one thing or the other. And if it's the other, just looking at your list.
00:04:03
Speaker
Uh, wait, he's, then his last three horror films are less known and I haven't seen any of them. Uh, they have, they each have their fans, but Snow White, A Tale of Terror in 97, Daybreakers 2009 and Backtrack 2015. Have you heard of those?
00:04:17
Speaker
Nope. Never watched any of them. So to celebrate the life and times of Sam Neill, you and I talked on the phone the other day and decided we wanted our next movie to be a Sam Neill movie. One of those three that you just mentioned.

New Projects and Deals in the Horror Genre

00:04:30
Speaker
I thought of this, Trav. What if we did an Instagram poll tomorrow and the next day about which one of those three people think we should cover? And then if we get any votes at all, we'll honor it. No self-voting rec here to propel your choice because that might be one of our only votes. But yeah, we'll put on social.
00:04:49
Speaker
um And let's see. People will will probably have to put the poll up before this episode even releases. Yes. few days three We're recording on ah on a Tuesday. We'll put it up this Wednesday. You guys will hear this Sunday. so yeah.
00:05:06
Speaker
um But yeah, a big loss. And by all accounts, he seemed like a great guy. Spielberg pinned an amazing thing about him. Tony Collette said some nice words. Cillian Murphy. I'm just trying to mention like some of our horror freaks.
00:05:17
Speaker
um And also in New Zealand, the last few of these Evil Dead movies have all been filmed in New Zealand. And so a little connection there. But just wanted to pour one out, pour pour out some wax candle, some candle wax for ah right in my mouth for Sam Neill.
00:05:32
Speaker
Mm-hmm. um Yeah, man, he we lost a good one. um But yeah, so moving on to looking forward, um i think the only notable pieces is, ah you know, our...
00:05:50
Speaker
Last rights are end, so to speak, Ed and Lorraine Warren. Turns out to not truly be the end. way. They have passed the next segment of edd and Lorraine Warren, and they're taking us to an earlier stage in their life when they were much younger. And what i think it's called ah First Communion is going to be the next chapter here um in the series. And so that's targeting, I think, 2027
00:06:20
Speaker
um And I bring it up again, where we've covered the whole um the Conjuring series, if you want to listen to one of our other not franchise series. Not the whole Conjuring-verse, just the mainline series. Yes, yes. And um you cannot deny that it's it's the highest grossing horror franchise of all time. And so there are some great installments from James Wan early in the series. I think we're a bit more lukewarm on some of the later installments. But it will be interesting to see this revival of the franchise here next year, especially with new leads. He no longer will have Vera Farmiga or Patrick Wilson, who, I mean, let's be honest, like they're acting carried
00:06:57
Speaker
carried that franchise, especially the later installments where you really lost James Wan being as involved. um So without them, it'll be interesting to see this next chapter. They're getting even hotter.
00:07:08
Speaker
How is that possible? talking about Ed Warren has quite the ah Hollywood glow up here. If you look up real pictures, Ed Warren, a bad person.
00:07:18
Speaker
But I was going to say, he got an ethical glow up as well. Yes, yes, very much. um Yeah, try I will only want to cover that film. It'll be to it'll be dependent on my health coverage at that time, um depending on how like extensive my medical policy is. I don't I can't afford more rogue trips to the ER.
00:07:39
Speaker
First films. Just eat an apple a day. That's what we're talking about, right? Yeah. You should be good next time around. Okay. I'll do my best. um The other thing that I saw was ah the

Review and Impact of Evil Dead Burn

00:07:51
Speaker
Craven Estate regained its rights to the original night of Nightmare on Elm Street ah screenplay in 2019. Wow.
00:08:00
Speaker
Meaning they can they had their list of suitors, and it sounds like from an exclusive earlier this week from The Hollywood Reporter... that Paramount inked a right to deal with them. So unknown how many years that Paramount has access to that script and what they can do with it.
00:08:19
Speaker
But it's going to be, it sounds like it's going to be the flagship product on Paramount's new service, Paramount Primal. They have a new label. You think they're going to give your old boss, Taylor Sheridan?
00:08:34
Speaker
their guy You know what? Come hell or high water, you don't know. Maybe they'll be western spin. now Nightmare on Elm Street. I mean, they've said that it's it'll be a story that at least takes place in the same universe. So I don't know how closely they'll stay. As Yellowstone or as Nightmare on Elm Street? No, Nightmare on Elm Street. Nightmare on Elm Street. Okay, okay. I was like, wow, that is shocking. Yeah. over a Dutton Ranch. ah Nobody go to sleep at Dutton Ranch. You know what? With the amount of cocaine that goes on at that ranch, I think nobody will have any...
00:09:07
Speaker
have any trouble sleeping over there um But yeah, Paramount Primal, it's their new genre label and um it's led by J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margulis, the guys behind Barbarian and Friendship, some power brokers in Hollywood. So yeah, we don't know anything other than that. But I'm excited. i The ah first Nightmare on Elm Street I love. Actually, I love the whole series. Dream Warrior is probably my favorite. um But I never saw the 2010 remake.
00:09:39
Speaker
Basically, it got pretty panned and I wasn't interested in checking it out. Maybe when I'm feeling... The last one I saw was Freddy vs. Jason, which was everything wanted as a horny 16-year-old
00:09:51
Speaker
But I think it came out around then. But ah looking back on it, I can see why ah the ah franchise i'll tell you did I tell you my story about Freddy versus Jason in the theaters.
00:10:02
Speaker
So i and now I feel ah self-conscious telling this story because on this last pod, you ripped me for sharing my public good deeds. ah Okay. Yeah. Publicly.
00:10:13
Speaker
Well, this started off as a good deed and then wasn't. As you know, Trav, I was heavily involved in Best Buddies. That is truly a good deed, yes. Well, just wait. A nonprofit where you're paired up with somebody with intellectual and developmental disabilities, like Down syndrome. And I got paired up with a guy named Austin Davenport, or you know who you know was a big part of my life for 15 years before he passed. Yeah.
00:10:36
Speaker
Anyways, our first hangout session was the movies, and he said he wanted to see Friday versus Jason. and So we go see it. We have a ball. We popcorn.
00:10:48
Speaker
Now, I was still getting to understand like the dynamic between Austin, his wife, who also had Down syndrome, and his parents who live in town. Because it's like, he's 35 at that time. He's of age.
00:11:01
Speaker
But obviously, he's getting state-assisted help financially. He has his own job, but like he still needs some guidance in the world. and so his parents kind of loosely shepherd him. And I learned that night when I came home and dropped him off and his mom was there,
00:11:16
Speaker
She said, Oh, what'd you guys see? And i was like, Oh, we just saw a funny little horror flick, Freddy versus Jason. And I see Austin look at me like, dude, what are you saying right now? Like, what are you telling her this for? And she's like, um Ricky, remind me what that was rated. I was like, Oh, I are.
00:11:31
Speaker
And I got a polite speaking to about kind of what to put into Austin's head. Oh, that's funny. I did not know that story. He he loved it. he He told that story till the day he died about how he he snuck one past his mom. That's amazing.
00:11:45
Speaker
um Yeah. And the other, the other, I guess, similar news was that Crystal Lake, a prequel miniseries on Peacock about the origins of ah the lake where Jason, Jason Voorhees. Yes.
00:11:59
Speaker
Where he took shape. And it's ah Linda Cardellini who's headlining that. I love her and yeah everything she's in, especially Grandma's Boy. Great underrated comedy. If you haven't seen it. Dude, Grandma's Boy is fantastic. Yeah.
00:12:13
Speaker
um Yeah, so some some revitalizations of old, wonderful slashers, and we'll see if they do them justice. So that's all I got, dude. Talk about revivals of old, wonderful horror films. Maybe not necessarily a slasher, but ah this is the Sunday Scaries. I'm Travis Telerik.
00:12:30
Speaker
I'm Ricky Townsend. And today we're covering the latest chapter in Evil Dead, in Evil Dead Burn, a film by Sebastian Vanacek.
00:12:42
Speaker
um Just came out this past week. If you're listening to this now on Sunday when this episode releases, they'll have been in theaters for a little over a week. This is the sixth film in the franchise. It is the end of our groovy road to Evil Dead Burn. And i feel like we're we're pretty well informed now, having so recently watched the rest of the franchise and not just the lore, but all the production that went into it to ah talk to it now. I was pretty amped going into this movie. And so
00:13:13
Speaker
Yeah, Rick, let's talk about it. When did you see it? I saw it last night at the AMC waterfront. um I'm fully moved into Pittsburgh. I think this first time podcasting out of Pittsburgh. And it is the coolest AMC, dude. It's like the Taj Mahal of AMCs. It's like very, it's very royal. And it's got these big columns. And it's got all these like quotes on ah on the banner on the on the tops of the ceilings of all these like you know i see dead people and we'll always have paris and all these cool lines i'll be back um sodden prime had the seat in prime um sparsely attended but like you know monday night at 9 10 um
00:13:54
Speaker
and I'm starting to think, Trav, that i as much as I love premier seating, man, I'm i'm like in prep for this episode. I'm looking at my notes, and they're so scrabbled and scribbly because I'm writing it in the dark. And I might have to start taking you up on the sit just sit in the back and use the phone as as blasphemous as that is. If I'm not bothering anybody, then whatever. But I missed probably like 25% of my notes because I just cannot read them. Yeah.
00:14:20
Speaker
um But yeah, I saw it last night, and i had a hell of a time, man. It's fun. It's a fun movie. A worthy installment in the Evil Dead franchise, in my opinion. And as you know, we never talk about these things beforehand, so I'm eager to hear what you have to say. um It's not my favorite. It's not my least favorite.
00:14:40
Speaker
it It was just solid. I have some nitpicks, and I have some things I really liked about it, and it made some choices. And that's all you can ask for, dude, is like... these these directors uh coming out of the woodwork and oftentimes other parts of the world and have a different take and add to it uh they add they take they you know meld in different ways and so um i'll give more of my more thoughts after i hear what your viewing experience was like but uh had a good old time yeah i saw that amc arapa crossing just earlier today tuesday
00:15:14
Speaker
Um, one 30 matinee showing the classic of trap classic. Yes. Uh, two, two films in the last 48 hours really for me. I took my girls to see toy story five there on Sunday, which is fantastic. I know we don't talk about animated Pixar movies on this pod, but man, Pixar lets me down occasionally with some of their newer releases, but they, they do not, ah mess around with their crown jewel of IP and toy story. They do a really good job.
00:15:41
Speaker
um But Evil Dead Burn I saw today sat in the back row, just like you said, that did enable me to take notes on my phone, which is ah fortunate. There was a lot I wanted to write about because echoing your point, I really like this film as well. I um i think my overall take on the franchise now that we've seen all six,
00:16:00
Speaker
is every single film, to me at least, in the Evil Dead franchise, they are hitting a solid single with. They are getting a hit every single time at bat. They haven't made a bad movie. rare Exactly, which is extremely rare for a franchise that is six films deep.
00:16:16
Speaker
um And i think that's a testament to you know the direction they chose with going with new directors, allowing them to kind of run with it, truly create their own flavor, which this one really does feel more unique. I think we lose a little bit the lore.
00:16:32
Speaker
in fan service from the Evil Dead films. But you really got to give kudos to Vanachek. It is a whole vibe, this movie, um feeling distinctly unique. It also does a really good job of, ah for a franchise that's really struggled with continuity and retconning, I think this is the first installment where there's a very clear path from yeah Evil Dead Rise to this film. So also kudos to that. There there was no retconning needed as far as I could tell. I was thinking, i was thinking just in case people are listening to this who have not decided when they're goingnna watch it, if they haven't seen it yet, if we could have a clear spoiler mark at some point in this episode, maybe before the awards. because i know that the And maybe even ah resist talking about the post-credits scene until, i assume it's both of our Shyamalan award.
00:17:21
Speaker
Right? Yeah. For Biggest Twist. 100%. we resist talking about it until then if we can. Yes, let's do it. um The only thing i agree with all that, the only thing I would would push back on is like I do think...
00:17:34
Speaker
he He added lore and dipped into a lot of lore. I don't know if I can articulate it as best as I can as other like evil dead fanatics might be able to, but there was a lot about the wise men who are mentioned in Army of Darkness.
00:17:49
Speaker
Obviously, the whole thing's about finding the Kandarian dagger, which um I liked. I was a little confused by because the the dagger they find is is looks like the one we've seen other movies, and then that's like a...
00:18:03
Speaker
It's a decoy or something. um ah you You've said six films. I want to bring something up to your attention here, Trev. Six films plus a series in Ash vs. Evil Dead, yes which ah apparently you know contributes a lot of of ah ah canonical information and twists and turns and lore.
00:18:24
Speaker
But I want to revisit something that we brought up during Evil Dead 2013. I think I just mentioned offhand that the Lee Cronin's The Mummy some people considered an Evil Dead movie.
00:18:35
Speaker
Do you know why they were saying that? No, I haven't seen. haven't seen Lee Cronin's The Mummy. So not only silly every time I mentioned his name, and we well title is it is Lee Cronin's The Mummy. yeah um He has gone on record. So in the movie, people notice that, hey, there's a professor Baxter.
00:18:54
Speaker
in The Mummy, who is an archaeologist, which happens to have the same name as Beth Baxter and ostensibly Ellie in Evil Dead Rise. And when asked about that, he says, yes, maybe they could be related. And then there's also 1923 audio recording in Lee Cronin's The Mummy that sounds very similar to the 1923 audio recording Evil Dead Rise. So when people are making their rankings here and there on Letterboxd and Reddit, some people are including Lee Cronin's The Mummy. So I do think we should both give a chance to watch Lee Cronin's The Mummy this year because I think Lee Cronin's The Mummy ah might be an unofficial installment in The Evil Dead. I'm sure we'll watch it before the of the year. we If we ever get around to doing our second annual Spookies Awards, um that's definitely one we need a catch up on for our 2026 more notable horror films.
00:19:41
Speaker
Yeah. um Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have not commented. ah And i know Lee Cronin has been known in the past to try to add his own lore without getting approval, like saying, oh, yeah, that's yeah time displaced Ash.
00:19:54
Speaker
yeah That's what I was holding back on is that he's kind of interjected some of like, this is what's going on the franchise. And then Bruce Campbell's been like, no, no, no, no. I was just making a cameo. This is not as elaborate of a... as some people might want it to be um ah before before i give more thoughts drive can i do the synopsis yeah that'd be great after the loss of her husband a woman alice seeks solace with her in-laws as one by one they transform into deadites she comes to discover that the vows she took in life survive even in death a couple thoughts
00:20:28
Speaker
this food This movie reminded me a lot, not the the laughs, which there are some laughs, maybe not in this in the as overt as people might think when they think of comedy, but it reminded me Final Destination Bloodlines. There was a lot of like ah Rube Goldberg-esque teasing of household objects that you know are going to play a part later, whether it has to do with a car or a kitchen or sharp objects or teasing a chainsaw that's never used, and then it's a a bush trimmer. what they're called? Bush trimmers? Bush whacker? Yeah, that was like a weed whacker, but with a metal blade on the end as opposed to ah just like the strings. yeah um
00:21:09
Speaker
I love the 15-minute title drop, you know? Yeah, a nice, ah nice hefty 15 minutes before we see the the title drop. I liked that. Okay, so Vanacek's film. He's got a distinct style. I think you you you mentioned this earlier. and some of it are like. I feel like this feels the least like the other five films. Yes, I agree. So like, ah you know, the setting is somewhat similar and instead of taking place in a cabin or an apartment. It takes place at like a family farm home in a Victorian home. Yeah. But like in an open area, countryside or woods. Yeah. Right. And so and then she's stuck there with in-laws who don't like her after her husband has passed. um But his filming style is very bleak and austere.
00:21:53
Speaker
And um super visceral like he he he forgoes buckets of blood and instead just has people slamming other humans into the ground and into the wall. And the camera goes with them. And and it's it's just in your face. I don't know if trav if you've heard of um a a movement in in French horror called um the the the new French extremity or new French extremism, which Uh, Gasper knows you've reversible as part of that group martyrs, uh, high tension. And it's just like super graphic, unflinching looks at like injuries and horror and violence, but often with like a social commentary underneath. I haven't seen as much as I'd like, but I know enough to have picked it out and watching this, Kind of arthouse gore is how I'd put it. And Vanacek dips into that completely, in my opinion. um A lot of his filming style is low to the ground. It's very, very brutal.
00:22:57
Speaker
um And I think the only thing I didn't like about that was, like you said, we lost some evil deadness. The deadite designs just looked kind of more like generic zombies to me. And I thought the color palette was just drab and gray. And I missed the pops of color that we saw in other films.
00:23:15
Speaker
That aside, aside from that, I really liked what what he was doing behind the camera, like as far as directorial flair.

French Influence and Thematic Elements in Evil Dead Burn

00:23:23
Speaker
And the music in this one, I know we usually save this for later, but he brings in this ah this group called Double Danger to do the soundtrack here. And it's talking about like visceral.
00:23:34
Speaker
It's like this heavy electronica grunge style that was... It was fun. Like it had me amped. Yeah. um And i I can't think of like the past films noting the music having as big an impact on not at all nearly as much. And so that kind of goes again with this unique flavor Banachek brings.
00:23:56
Speaker
Hala Hova by Slim Bambino. This was a song that I shazammed in the theater because I want to know what it was. But it was it's this one. I think it's when they're playing at the club.
00:24:13
Speaker
the The club scene, which has probably one of the best match cuts I've seen in the last couple of years, which maybe we should say for winners and losers, but that that that smash cut from car to ass was amazing. yeah Yes, you get to look right in a lady's booty.
00:24:36
Speaker
It's just front and center. It's true, Trev. You do. um You do. And so, yeah, a little more sexuality than what we've seen in past ah Evil Dead films as well. And that some some raunchy kissing.
00:24:51
Speaker
Mm hmm. Yeah, that's ah I agree with all that. Everything you said, it I always prefer some degree of uniqueness and taking a swing versus just paying fan service. And I yeah think that's what Banachek really went for here. So again, i don't think everything landed for me.
00:25:15
Speaker
um it But it it does a good job. And to my point I made earlier, because you're right, it it adds a lot to the Evil Dead universe lore. I more so meant the other films, there was a lot more homage paid to the original trilogy, a lot more Easter eggs. And I think this one was a bit lacking where truly Banachek was like, no, i'm just going do my do my thing here. I'm going my own thing.
00:25:36
Speaker
Yes, I agree. And I think that's that that's like to its benefit. like It wasn't as cloying or desperate to do fan service in the past versus like explore new opportunities. um Something also, i don't know if you noticed this, but the sound design was awesome, not not just with like bones crunching and like bodies. Again, bodies slam into walls 25% of this movie, if not more.
00:26:01
Speaker
But also, did you notice that any time a deadite spoke, it was no matter how far away they were, it was as if it was like in your head. And I, you know, I think as for placing us into a protagonist's shoes, I found that really creepy and and really effective.
00:26:16
Speaker
Like it didn't matter where the dead it was, whether it's in the cellar or outside or whatever. um It's just like surrounding you always. um Another thing is I've seen some discourse out there like that.
00:26:31
Speaker
my My friend, Joel, ah Joel Myers, who's a huge Evil Dead fan and and will likely be our guest on the evil on the Resident Evil podcast. But we were talking and he mentioned something that I agree with. He it was like, he's getting, he was like, I'm getting kind of tired of the the tonality discussion of this balance and tone. And we miss the zaniness from Bruce Campbell. hmm.
00:26:51
Speaker
And his point, and which I agree with, is like... humor comes in many different shapes and forms. One of those things is like extreme violence or gore when it ramps up to a point where it's simply ridiculous. You can do your own sight gags, whether it's, you know, an evil dead 2013 where her arm just comically falls off or yes the guy slips on her cheek or an evil dead rise when they're using a cheese grater or ah ah little boy's getting yeeted down the hallway. and even here, there is...
00:27:23
Speaker
Dude, that whole scene at the funeral ah with the jackhammers going on while they were trying to talk. Yes, construction going on during the service. It's great. it's it's It's black humor. It's not as in your face as your Bruce Campbell zaniness. But, I mean, paul ah the grandma's role in this paul is chock full of humor. So I think people are being a little short-sighted with what they consider humor. and It might be a little more subtle and under under under the surface than you're used to, but...
00:27:50
Speaker
It's a funny movie. like it's It's not like every laugh a minute, but it's funny. I laughed more for this one than I did the past two films than for Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead 2013, early Cronin's ah Evil Dead Rise. I think this one actually had more humor in it. And to your point, some of it is just the extremeness of...
00:28:10
Speaker
you know, funny situations, um you know, Allah, like ah meet the parents, right? Like, fan this is awkward or this is, I can't believe I'm seeing this, but also is some more overt humor and like what Polly's saying.
00:28:25
Speaker
um Just. thing people of trying to come to the home to steal her money. yeah Did it see, did this movie unlike the others seem more like a vampire movie to you?
00:28:36
Speaker
Like there was ah the recruitment efforts were much more intentional in my opinion. Like join us, you know, we're family, we're all together. that That seemed a bit, I don't know, it seemed more vampiric to me. i don't know if you felt that. Yeah, i I agree. Also, there was more like deadites like knocking at the door, like waiting to be let in, where in the past movies we usually see, you know, windows getting shattered and evil entities and so evil spirits entering the home through that. There was not as much evil spirit entering in this one. And we can discuss that. I think some of that's maybe...
00:29:11
Speaker
intentional And when we get to spoilers, we could talk about maybe why that wasn't as present here. um But because you were largely devoid of, you know, on omnipresent evil entity kind of flying through the woods and and attacking our protagonists and characters that way.
00:29:29
Speaker
it was much more grounded in each deadite themselves, slowly trying to get more deadites to join the family, so to speak. Maybe that is because it is more rooted in a familial system, which is kind of an extension of the last one, which is a nuclear family um where, you know, it's a family that loves each other very much and is trying to save themselves. Whereas this one is a family that hates each other.
00:29:54
Speaker
ah But it's familial. I think these last two movies are super familial. um I'm surprised we haven't mentioned Edgar yet, who who I thought was fantastic, played by Errol Shand. ah The dad of the family.
00:30:07
Speaker
one of i page yeah One of the more memorable like male Deadite performances. Because I haven't seen one that stuck out a while. Yeah, I 100% agree. That might be the most memorable.
00:30:20
Speaker
the The best portrayal of a male deadite other than, you know, when Bruce Campbell gets turned briefly. Just good ah just a good old classic ah masochist with that pistol of his.
00:30:30
Speaker
um Any more general thoughts or do you want to touch on themes, which I know with these Evil Dead movies shouldn't take too long. Yeah, yeah. We can go to themes. Yeah, I mean, this is this is one where I i didn't feel that strongly about. Like, i I think enough men have made movies about and domestic abuse and the role that women must play in those situations and the the violence there within. i don't think he was doing anything offensive or anything. i just I think it is a bit of a tired trope at this point, but it is something new for for for Evil Dead. So um there's that.
00:31:08
Speaker
I do wish they did more with what they were trying to say, except it seemed like they were trying to get somewhere with this idea of reclaiming your independence and, and fighting back against your abusers. But it it seemed a bit surface level to me. I, I got more, I got more mileage out of the family strife about how it it is to be an outsider. She's a French girl.
00:31:31
Speaker
Um, in an American family who is not appreciated or loved. And those interpersonal dynamics were more interesting to me than than the issue she was having with her abusive husband. So I don't know how you felt about those thematic. Yeah, I so definitely agree that this movie, the main strife here is domestic abuse. Like where in Evil Dead 2013, it was addiction, and recovery, and Evil Dead Rise. You know, it's this...
00:32:01
Speaker
Family-centered drama again, but more seriously. That was like a maternal yeah turmoil. um and And so outside of the domestic abuse of this one, you you kind of get like also like when an apple is rotten, it could mean the whole barrel is rotten as in the the family here, right? The in-laws that she stays with.
00:32:22
Speaker
And you also get, you know, Vanacek is French. I think this was a very much pro-France, anti-America movie. Like with a French protagonist kind of marrying into this horrible American family. youub Does not have to run restaurants. so ah You know, that maybe that was a bit more tongue-in-cheek. But I got they got some whiffs of that as well. But, ah you know, power to Vanacek. He's repping his country here. We just you knocked out of the World Cup today.
00:32:51
Speaker
I was just going to say, play too hot. So maybe yeah maybe a little karma coming your way for talking about America like that in our country. Oh, yeah. America got knocked out. US got knocked out earlier. by Spain, that's where it's at right now.
00:33:05
Speaker
I did like... I did like ah sometimes I think you'll find and this goes both ways, whether it's domestic going international whatever. ah But when the a an international filmmakers tapped to helm ah an American financed movie that they'll try to adapt.
00:33:22
Speaker
and Americanize their style. Vanacek did the opposite. He's like, cool, I'm going to make this a French film. Like yeah my lead's going to be French. It's going to play a huge part in the movie about an expat, you know, coming to France or sorry, coming to America from France. And then I'm also going to borrow the style of a very,
00:33:43
Speaker
you know, important French horror movement in the new French extremity. So I love that he just owned his nationality and then like his, what he he used what he knew rather than trying to do something else. ah I think it worked out in his favor. And it it'll it's a great installment. I just think it's like, it's so fun watching this franchise grow and it's like a worthy family member on the mantelpiece yeah yeah or on the mantle.
00:34:07
Speaker
ah a worthy family family member, which is what Alice was striving for here this whole film. Yeah, just couldn't get there. um Let's talk production notes.
00:34:19
Speaker
So I have to own this. I was susceptible to probably very targeted social media advertising for this film that I assumed everyone else was getting. And so I thought this was going to be a smashing box office success following on the heels of, you know, the last two installments kept getting bigger and better.
00:34:41
Speaker
Confetti Alvarez's 2013, Dilly Cronin's in 2023.
00:34:45
Speaker
um We still got time for maybe this to turn the page and better. Slow burn, so to speak. It's not doing as well as had hoped or planned. I do not think this will be the highest grossing Evil Dead film to date. In fact, it'll likely be far from it, although it looks like still treading towards a box office success, to be clear.
00:35:06
Speaker
make Yeah, no, money on the film let's it'll be successful in the sense that it will make money before it hits streaming. it's kind of It's almost profitable already.
00:35:17
Speaker
ah It's a disappointment in terms of the trajectory of of the film. of the series. So ah Evil Dead Rise opened to twenty four million um had a ah what I had my notes in here. So a two point seven five multiplier, meaning it went on to have a domestic total of sixty seven.
00:35:41
Speaker
And then with its with international, it it it did one fifty total. Here we have a fifteen million dollar opening Where if you apply the same viewing patterns of Evil Dead Rise, that 2.7x multiplier, you're ending up at 90 million worldwide. And if it has the same international domestic split, like all all things being equal, which it won't, it's a different release date, whatever.
00:36:08
Speaker
It's on target to gross less than Evil Dead 2013, but 90 million worldwide on a, what'd you say? $25 million dollars budget. 20 million, $20 million dollar budget. So that's, so many that's money well more than profitable. I, I think they're going to look at how they marketed into their release dates. I texted you this. I do think it's a release date thing. Evil Dead has never been a summer blockbuster event.
00:36:32
Speaker
In my opinion, i think it's either a fall or a spring situation. Um, I don't know. It just doesn't, it doesn't scream summer. And also you're, you are, but they're blocked in by all these other movies, Odyssey, Toy Story five. um the amount The same weekend as the Moana live action movie, although that's not too hot either. So bad weekend at the box office. Thank God.
00:36:56
Speaker
I mean, why was... I asked if i my four-year-old... Everyone's saying they knew this was coming, but earlier this year, wasn't that this year was that last year, Lilo and Stitch like broke the box office with with its super high live-action remake numbers. So i I don't understand the science... Fool me once, shame on you. on these Fool me twice. Shame on me. I don't think audiences want to be fooled twice. It's kind of a, it's an old gimmick. And I, I hope it, I asked my four year old God daughter what she thought of Moana the live action. And she goes, um it was the same like as what Moana one. I'm like, all right, that's all you got to say.
00:37:35
Speaker
ah So yeah, development of this movie. um I don't have much on it either, Trav. It's a new release, so the interviews aren't a populating as much as an older film, but um very similar story to how these other things came up. Sam Raimi is doing his thing, comes across verminz or infestation.
00:37:56
Speaker
ah Vanacek's It's directorial debut about spiders, which looks really creepy and I want to see. And from what I have seen, it looks like a very similar aesthetic to, you know, Dead Burn in terms of its color palette. Yeah, I've not seen it either, but it is it is pretty routinely praised. It's on my watch list right now for...
00:38:17
Speaker
You know, more recent, I think it came out 2023, more recent horror films that I need to go check out. And so, like you're saying, Sam Raimi caught this and, you know, identifying new and young talent, like we've said, with both Lee Cronin and Fetty Alvarez. And so this is how he kind of spotted the next director to pass the torch to it. So it's like...
00:38:37
Speaker
I think another pattern it followed to Trav was that you find that whatever new director that they had from the previous installment is trying to hold on to the to the ride, because by all accounts, it seems like Lee Cronin either did want to do Evil Dead Burn or almost did and then got the mummy offer.
00:38:58
Speaker
and then went off and made his own. Some people call it Evil Dead Egypt, which makes me want to see The Mummy even more. um But curiously enough, he got and ah Cronin got an EP credit on this one, which we'll talk about maybe why later. But dot, dot, dot. You know, also worth noting, all three of these directors, international directors here, going outside the US s for its farm system here. That's what I'm saying. ah Lee Cronin, Ireland, Vanacek, France, Fetty, Uruguay.
00:39:27
Speaker
right? Yeah. Or is it Paraguay? i think it's Uruguay. Okay. Sorry, buddy. One of Guays. But we are taking it back to the homestead for the next installment in Evil Dead Wrath.
00:39:38
Speaker
ah That dude has a very Italian name, but he is American. Oh, okay. Francis Galupi. or gala um A prequel.
00:39:52
Speaker
A prequel. To Evil Dead 1. Yeah, development that's development. Do you want to do casting? Yeah, so I apologize because there are some bigger name stars in this film. For the prior Evil Dead films, think are very notable. Wait, sorry. What stars are in this movie, though? Well, I'll say they have long filmographies. Oh, okay. I am just unfamiliar with their work.
00:40:15
Speaker
So here i go butchering names, but Suheila Yacob is our star here, and she plays Alice. Our fire final girl. She was in Dune Part 2 with a smaller role.
00:40:28
Speaker
She's in Climax. Yeah, so yeah she's she's the one who's ah very leery about Timothee Chalamet's character. She's like telling Zendaya, like, why do you trust this guy? he's Exactly. shouldn't Yeah, okay.
00:40:40
Speaker
Yeah. And then Tandy Wright plays the mom in ah Susan. Now, Tandy Wright, I have seen her in. She is the mom of ah Pearl in T. West, you know, 2022 film. Ty West.
00:40:54
Speaker
Ty West, thank you. um Hunter Doohan plays Joseph. That's one of the ah brothers, I guess, her Alice's brother-in-law. Giddy has a few films he's been in, but I'm not familiar with any of them.
00:41:08
Speaker
Lucy Ann Buchanan plays, this is the tough name, but I think we're thinking it's Taya. Taya, Thea, Taya, Tia, I don't know. think it's either Thea or Taya. I was trying to listen for how they pronounce her name throughout the entire movie, and I never heard it clear, despite being in a single piece. I had few instances of not...
00:41:26
Speaker
knowing what the characters were saying, whether they were a deadite speaking. I could have, I'll probably have to return to this one with subtitles at some point. I would say a bit of a messy movie in that regard. I, and again, i like what Vanacek was doing, but also some of like the, the, the editing style and, and his lack of master shots. Like it's, it's, we often talk about a lot of closeups in these movies, but Sam Raimi is like a master at doing that, but you still understand that the motivations and the action There was a lot of chaos where I did not know what was happening and I didn't know what was being said, whether that's intentional or not. But a quick note on Lucien Buchanan, who played Thea or Taya, the girlfriend of Will, or sorry, yeah, of Will.
00:42:13
Speaker
Of Joe. The girlfriend of Joe. I'm sorry, who played the girlfriend of Joe. So get this. She was involved in Evil Dead Rise. Do you know what her role was?
00:42:24
Speaker
No. She was part of the crew. She was Nell Fisher, the little girl who played Cassie. She was Cassie's doubles. like handler, like she made sure she got the set on time and stuff and like was kind of her. Oh, cool. Her guardian, if you will. And a lot of these people are New Zealand. And so she was involved and knew these people. So I thought that was interesting. And then another connection, Trav, on the last episode, you had said that um Anna Marie Thomas, who played Jessica in Evil Dead Rise, was in this. You were close.
00:42:56
Speaker
It's her stunt double, Greta Van Den Brink, Her stunt double in Evil Dead Rise plays Jessica in this movie. Oh, i did I just thought that was the same actress who played Jessica. So it was Jessica's stunt double.
00:43:13
Speaker
So for those who are haven't seen these movies in a while, ah Jessica is the deadite in the beginning of Evil Dead Rise at the at the lake who iconically ah beheads her boyfriend and then rises out of the water. and With the title card.
00:43:31
Speaker
with the title card and and that film chronologically is bookended by that moment. And then we kind of get a cool thing here in Evil Dead Burn, where the movie starts off back at that lake, although in much different circumstances, different season. And ah she is she is back and reeks of the lake, still in the lake, hanging out, getting getting some getting some sun. ah But ah yeah, played by a different actor. Well, I guess the same actor. A stunt double is on camera as well. But yeah, heard yeah Jessica's stunt double. I thought that was interesting.
00:44:05
Speaker
Okay, okay. um And then you already noted Errol Shand, who plays Edgar, the the dad of the family. He's great in this film. Again, he's had minor roles in a lot of smaller films, none of which I'm familiar with. And lastly, well, I got i guess two more. Maude Davey plays Polly, the grandma.
00:44:22
Speaker
um she's She brings the comedy, like we said, to this film. And last lastly, we have George Poehler, who plays Will, who is husband to Alice.
00:44:33
Speaker
What an asshole. What a great asshole. Yeah. she's He did play great asshole. Nothing's his fault. So awesome. um That's it for casting. i mean, crew, anything else? You know, we we caught talked about Vanachek. I think it's probably worth saying that he co-wrote yeah um this film here with Florent Bernard.
00:44:55
Speaker
um who also co-wrote, ah vert is it Vermines? Yeah, and the American translation is or the American title is Infested. Yeah, so they're they're a duo returning here to write together in this film.
00:45:09
Speaker
All right, well, let's ah let's rip off that spoiler warning here as we get into our awards. Spoiler warning. Because we got some cool stuff to talk about. Scurometer. Scurometer. where we rate the scariness, not this quality of the film, but the scariness of this film.
00:45:29
Speaker
um Yeah, let's do it on three. All right. Three, two, one, six. Whoa, look at us. It's been a while.
00:45:42
Speaker
It's been a while since we've landed. Wow, the last few were fairly contentious, but here we're we're in agreement. i know, I don't think I could handle another fight with you, Trav, about our sclerometer. So this means all three new installments of Evil Dead we find...
00:45:55
Speaker
well scarier than original trilogy. Yeah, which just in this seemed more muscular. It seemed more like a lot of it's in the daylight. I didn't feel dread as much as I felt like cringe-inducing moments, as I'm sure the Canal of the Ward will have a lot. It's much gorier and brutal, but it's not as scary. It's not as dreadful. so it's But we still believe it's evil.
00:46:18
Speaker
Army of Darkness is the clearly scary. Yeah, out of all films we've reviewed to date. Wait, is it really? it our lowest? Oh, you're right. It has to be, right? It's a 1.5. Yeah.
00:46:30
Speaker
That's very cute. Okay, highlights. There's a lot of highlights, man. There's some good parts of this movie. Yeah. So why did you pick that opening shot of that woman's booty just shaking in the camera?
00:46:45
Speaker
Dude, that is an amazingly bold match cut. Only rivaled by a Kubrick's 2001 Space out Odyssey from the ah the femur bone to the spaceship. ah Dude, I was like the only one laughing in my theater. I was looking around like, ah you guys you guys are getting bold. There was probably only five of us, but there were some good laughs for that part and others throughout the film.
00:47:08
Speaker
A vocal vocal group. Yeah. All right. One of them I picked was the dinner scene. Yeah, that's what I was going to say. It's just I i love a good dinner scene. um It did remind me of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
00:47:25
Speaker
Where you're at the table of a really fucked up family and you feel that tension of who's going to say what. and there's decay in the air and it escalates to a point where then you get violent and it culminates in and in a really great brawl and, uh, and some crazy shit happening. I, I really liked it.
00:47:46
Speaker
i I really liked like every character, at that dinner had a very distinct motivation just while they were eating. And you you feel them all, right? So you you have the mom, Susan, who's trying to be the matriarch and get everyone together because this is a normal formality after your son has passed and trying to include Alice.
00:48:06
Speaker
um You have recently turned or mid turning deadite in Edgar, who's just looking for any sharp objects he can find from the knife to the, you know, the wine corkscrew. Fiending for a sharp object. We should say like, yeah, he's already he has been infected at this point by a deadite. But they're still at dinner with their in-law, their daughter in-law, who they do not like, which just makes for good comedy, too.
00:48:30
Speaker
Speaking of fiending, you have Polly just really wanting a pour of wine there, like reaching out her cup to get a pour. They deny her. takes someone else's wine and starts drinking from it. um You have Alice trying to hold it together among her family. She really doesn't want to be there. And at the same time, she's keeping an eye on Edgar, trying to make sure sharp objects stay away from him. She takes away an object from him like three different times.
00:48:53
Speaker
Yes. And so like, I just love... the The tension building up, you know, something's about to go down, but you also see each character independently like acting to their motivations of their character arc. And it was a very satisfying payoff then with our poor good boy Max, who just gets forked over, so to speak. Wow, Trav, low hanging fruit right there. Yeah.
00:49:17
Speaker
Yeah. um Yeah, i agree. Anytime you're, and again, this was one of the most chaotic scenes where I couldn't really get a sense of where people were sitting, but at ah a certain point, didn't matter. All that mattered was like the weird energies going on between them.
00:49:31
Speaker
You have Will, you also have Will, ah or sorry, who who's? Joe's the brother. Sorry, I keep for ah mixing them up. You have Joe just being a complete bitch, just not sticking up for his girlfriend and yeah just kind of, you know,
00:49:45
Speaker
shaking in his boots. um The mashed potatoes looked a little soupy. I like mine a bit lumpier. i i love the dialogue where Susan's just like, you can't tell the difference. Oh, fresh and frozen. This is something you need to know if you're going to be running the club. So cutting. Yeah. Just a complete bitch remark. love um Yeah, that's my highlight. I know there's probably one of yours, but you have another that you liked? That was my top one off my list. um Yeah, that it was probably that. It's probably the car fight scene. That's what I had. good That's my second A car fight. It's claustrophobic.
00:50:21
Speaker
they're They're doing a great job at just using objects within the car within like ah a a seatbelt to try and strangle someone, you know, like the seat head. Well, set the scene, set the scene of who's fighting who. Cause I, this is another, another case of like really interesting motivations and fear.
00:50:34
Speaker
Yeah. So Edgar snapped and he just killed the family dog, but then he's also fallen back in, previously damaged his head. So Joe, his son, and Taya, Joe's girlfriend, get him in the car to take him to the yeah ER.
00:50:48
Speaker
And while they're driving, you know, he, Edgar comes to now fully as a deadite and begins to attack them. Taya's driving and he's, he's,
00:50:58
Speaker
trying to attack her while she's still driving, trying to take control the vehicle. They crash. And then while they're crashed, they're still going at it. And you, so again, you get different ways they're fighting from different parts of the car, from the front of the car to the back seats. well And you also have Taya like desperately asking Joe to protect her and like yeah shoot her, his own father. He's not doing it. Cause they have the gun that they teased in the glove compartment and Joe won't use it to kill his dad.
00:51:28
Speaker
um You have Taya's fingers get chopped off from the car door slamming on them. And then, like you said, you have Joe being a coward and escaping to the sunroof while he watches his dad, Edgar, just impale Taya through the back of the head repeatedly um with the the metal spikes on the car seat head. they Yeah, the headrest. The headrest, yeah.
00:51:50
Speaker
Repeatedly, but then he gets one final just shot. just right i yeah I thought that they were going to gouge her eyes, but no, it was less symmetrical than that. It was one going through her mouth, other through the other the throat. yeah I will look at Karst's headrest differently now.
00:52:08
Speaker
Very innovative in the kills and the the tools used for killings in this movie. You get a fork, you get a car seat head ah or headrest. But yeah, that that was probably my other one since we both agreed. That's funny that we we had the same two.
00:52:23
Speaker
But yeah, the dinner scene was was paramount for me. honorable mention old lady fight. Yeah, that, that was great. I mean, Polly really brings the comedy. Every scene she was in was pretty funny. I do take issue a little bit with the, uh, accusing Taya stealing from her gag.
00:52:38
Speaker
They, they used it maybe one too many times, um, of her bringing it up, but it was really funny. Like the, the first instances. I think it was like a, it did feel a little bit of like a translation issue the the way that she would say you're a thief or you're trying to steal my money.
00:52:55
Speaker
maybe in French there's a bit more bite. Well, she was accusing, ty she wasn't accusing Alice. She was accusing Taya. I know, stealing for but I'm saying this, it was a script writing problem with the dialogue and the jokes like that.
00:53:10
Speaker
Maybe they wrote this in French and it sounded funny and then they translate it. And it's just ah it's a bit, it's a bit dull, but I think her performance sells it and it's super funny. And yeah the, the, and her her leg being used as a weapon against herself and then the slow moving body what do you call it like what do you call the little machine that takes oh the automated chair that uh takes her yeah of the stairs all right yes she gets whacked and then tied to it slowly ah i love her mid-credit scene at the very end where she's just now
00:53:44
Speaker
lost both legs and is a deadite just crawling along the street. I have a, that's one of my winners for best lines is the mid crowd scene. yeah um but Yeah. Okay. Let's go to our Ben Gardner award.
00:53:56
Speaker
Best jump scare. Well, this is a good segue because the winner for me is, is grandma Polly when um at this point she has been infected in a very,
00:54:08
Speaker
ah sexy but gross way uh oh man that's it's save it for talking about our candle okay that was my clear just say we'll just say that she gets infected by a deadite and uh sexy is certainly a choice in words there so i can't wait to talk about that more don't kink shame dude yeah um local gilfs in your area um And she's on bed rest and Susan, the matriarch who's trying to pull everybody together and take care everybody. And she's dedicated her life to take care of her family is also taking care of her mother. And, um, she's walking out of the room and and behind her,
00:54:48
Speaker
Grandma puts the sheets above her head and sits up and calls her by her name, which she hasn't been the whole movie. She's been misnaming her. And so Susan is all hopeful and she turns around. She says, what'd you call me? And what's funny about this, this setup is like, you know, there's going to be a jump scare. It is. It is palpable with like tension and it's silent.
00:55:09
Speaker
I just didn't know what was going to happen. If she's going to lift open the sheets. What I was not expecting was her just to shoot up further in the air. Like it was just, she only had one leg. It was like, Oh my God, how'd you get up like that?
00:55:22
Speaker
Yeah. So I, I, I, I had a gleeful jump and I laughed at myself at that moment. So that was my word. ah Max, the dog got me or the dead-eyed version of Max, the dog. There's, there's, Oh yeah. After he's been turned and,
00:55:36
Speaker
They're in the interior. Joe's talking to Alice and suddenly comes right up against the glass and barks. And ah just one of those out of nowhere jump scares. There was less um palpable dread leading up to it. it's just like a quick gotcha when you weren't expecting it.
00:55:50
Speaker
Yeah, max Max was only dead for like five minutes. He had a fairly long deadite life, it seemed. Yeah. um All right, Deep Cuts. I split Trav mine into... We already talked music, so we can skip that, but I split mine into like Evil Dead callbacks slash expanding lore and then just like a couple random Deep Cuts. Yeah.
00:56:15
Speaker
ah Do you want to kick it off? I mean, the only one I had is they tease a few times in the film where you think a chainsaw is going to come into play and it never did. um What did in the film what do you think of that? were you Were you satisfied or did you want a chainsaw? The first time i really liked it. You see Edgar and his tool shed and he's putting gas in something. And I'm like, oh, there it is. There's the chainsaw we're going to see. And it turns out to be a weed whacker. I'm like, ah, he got me.
00:56:39
Speaker
at the end of the film when will you know this burned husk of will the deadite is fighting with alice now in the construction zone and alice is trying to climb out of like the pit she's in and she pulls down on a power cord to support her And you see what that power cord is attached to.
00:56:59
Speaker
And one of the items was a chainsaw, like a corded in chainsaw. She pulls down. I'm like, yes, this is where we get it. And instead of using the chainsaw, she ends up using like a jackhammer on him, which yeah was cool. But like, I feel like that was the perfect time at the very end to bring a chainsaw into play. And so I was, you know, I call out the...
00:57:21
Speaker
the T's for the purpose of our deep cuts here, but never got the ultimate payoff. I felt like yes I could used one chainsaw kill. You know, it's a double edged sword. I mean, we we commend Vanacek for doing his own thing, but then you kind of miss continuing the baton passing of the things they've done in all others.
00:57:40
Speaker
i think it's say I think it's I'm happy to say that there has been a chainsaw in every Evil Dead movie. Maybe not one has been used in every one. The jackhammer is funny, though, and I think it'll age well, especially when it ties back into the the sight gag of the funeral happening while the jackhammer is going. and so just the ultimate ah sign of disrespect that like the thing that was interrupting his funeral is now killing his dead eye version of his body.
00:58:05
Speaker
Um, I mentioned on the top of the episode, we have mention of these three wise men who put together a weapon to stave off deadites. And so the word wise men was used for the old man in army of darkness who helps Ash get back to his, uh, correct timeline.
00:58:22
Speaker
um the Kandarian dagger. So pretty, uh, Joel, my my my Evil Dead nerd buddy, tells me that it plays a much larger role and in the TV series, which you and I have not seen. um But up to this point, we just think it looks like a larger, more ridged version of that knife, kind of doing the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade bit. exactly what I thought. It was like the most humble-looking knife, right? Yes. It wasn't the gaudy did or ornate-looking thing. And so, yeah, just playing with the, you know, it's, it's the, that's the MacGuffin of the movie. um
00:59:01
Speaker
Cool to, to finally see it and see it in action. it does ah so to speak, make my dull knife a little bit. So I'll, I'll, I'll hold my thoughts. ah You do another mention of dead by dawn.
00:59:11
Speaker
I think Susan says it. i Oh, I missed that. Yeah. It's it's very muddy. The audio is muddy, but I heard her say it. Uh, They Joe picks up a turkey cutter in the kitchen. Yeah. Which is a callback to 2013. And then my last one, Trav, this is a long shot. If if you could remember what they were saying, they she was reading about the events that took place that that Joe and Will's.
00:59:40
Speaker
grandfather studied that he was a wise man and studied this Kandarian lore and these deadites. And they kept mentioning 1983 as something happening then. And isn't that when evil dead release? No, it it released in 80. Well,
00:59:56
Speaker
It released at festivals in 81, but yes, it wide release in 83. But I couldn't, what I wrote down, I could not read. But something happened in 83. Like there was some discovery. ah So maybe our listeners can put together what that was. But that was my Evil Dead evil dead lore.
01:00:14
Speaker
Okay, so we have another shiny nod. In the last movie, we had the gallons of blood coming out of the elevator. In this one, we have a little, here's Johnny, with Taya coming out of a hollow-bodied door, I assume, Travis. Yeah. If I'm to learn anything from your... ah Yeah, putting her face through it. That was definitely a hollow core door.
01:00:34
Speaker
Yeah, hollow core door. So just a nice little nod back to a Kubrick's horror masterpiece. You also get like kind of the... They're on set and snow in a remote oh yeah cabin vibe.
01:00:47
Speaker
Yep. Snowed in with a not great company. um You get a spider on a lamp of close up of a spider that then somebody, I forget who it is, swatted away. And I'm wondering if that's a callback to his first film.
01:01:04
Speaker
Oh, yeah. You're going galaxy brain here. It's a stretch. All right. the Last one is they make a big to-do about the Belvoir pen. and so i was My dad is a huge fountain pen collector. so I was interested to see if this was like a well-known pen. and so I went on to the subreddit of the fountain pens. And i lo behold, like one of the top posts was like, hey, is anyone seen Evil Dead Burn? What was that fountain pen? Because Belvoir is not a real brand. they didn't ah you know They just made it up. But they used a real fountain pen. And many of the comments I saw said that it that it had to be a Parker, specifically a Parker 75 Sissel. It's a classic sterling silver. It's a classic sterling silver crosshatch pattern with a signature arrow clip
01:01:52
Speaker
Those are its trademarks of a Parker, one of the world's most famous and prestigious luxury pen brands in the world.
01:02:00
Speaker
So there's your pen pen news for the day. i I like that you did the diligence there. You know, there's people are big like gear heads or have nice watches or have nice pens. And that's a universe that is very foreign to me. um But yeah, that pen definitely plays a big role in this film. Oh, part of my awards later. right. Now, cantaloupe award.
01:02:22
Speaker
right, Trev, it's at that time. i think you should explain. yeah so I will break my own rule. Usually the enforcement saying just one. I think there's probably a few we could call out here. So if we keep it brief, Rick, I think we name our winner. And it sounds like maybe we have the same one, but I'll i'll try to introduce it. But I think there's also room for some honorable mentions because Vantagec gives us a lot a lot to chew on, so to speak, when it comes to our cantaloupe award.
01:02:48
Speaker
um So this is our cringiest, hardest-to-watch moment. For me, this is very clear, very unique, very disturbing, and is when Deadite Taya is going at it with Polly, but she's not... Going at it? Explain what do you mean going at it. whoa So a lot of times, Deadites are just there to kill, but sometimes they're also there to taunt.
01:03:09
Speaker
You see the more social side of them, and this is the case here, where Taya could easily kill Polly in a moment's notice, but instead wants to have some fun with her. So she reaches towards Polly, the grandma, and ah poor our poor Polly with dementia and only one leg, pulls out her upper row of dentures from her mouth, puts it in her own mouth and licks on it and gets her own saliva on it. And she sucks on it. And like seductively sucks on it before then popping those dentures back into Polly's mouth, which was...
01:03:44
Speaker
man, an all time just cruel and hard to watch way to turn someone into a deadite because then that is what causes Polly to turn, like you were mentioning later in the movie when she's with Susan.
01:03:57
Speaker
And it was, ah yeah, it's funny because a lot of times in horror movies, it's something gory or gruesome, but this one was just the simple act of licking old lady's dentures and then putting them back in her mouth.
01:04:10
Speaker
Yeah, some some spit play. Yeah. um Is that what you had, or did you have something on top of that on your list? No, I had, dude, the pen going in Alice's ear. Ear hole, yeah.
01:04:26
Speaker
Yeah. Good sound design on that for when it punctures the eardrum. The visual... like Knowing that it punctured, i don't know what an eardrum looks like, but I can't imagine a fountain pen, especially a Parker 75, slamming into your drum like that. he said with a trademark like arrowed tip.
01:04:45
Speaker
Yes. ah and And yeah, sterling silver, no less. um Yeah, something about that really got me like I I scrunched up my seat.
01:04:56
Speaker
And I think because I'm wary of getting older and my eyesight's not what it used to be and I can't hear things as well. My back hurts. And, uh.
01:05:09
Speaker
her hearing went that quickly and I'm, I'm doing this, this slow crawl to, uh, losing my hearing and that kind of expedited her hearing loss. So that it was, it was between that and something you probably didn't have. It wasn't gory, but when the, in the beginning, when the guy's boat turns upside down and he's like swimming around while there's dead, I Jessica out there, i was, am I butthole clenched, man. i was very worried for him. I actually had that or just after that on my list as well because Jessica somehow turns the water to acid. it looks No, I think you no she boils it.
01:05:44
Speaker
Or she boils it. Okay. And you see the man be able to swim out of the lake but then die on the shoreline. And then she steps out of the lake and like purposefully steps on his hand and you just see all the skin on his hand just kind of slough off. Just slough. of But my other honorable mention I had to call out was, um again, Susan the matriarch.
01:06:05
Speaker
is up in the room with now dead-eyed Polly. And dead-eyed Polly tells her like, hey, go look who's at the window. And lo and behold, it's her dead-eyed husband, Edgar, pining for her somehow up on the second story.
01:06:18
Speaker
Susan opens the window for him and her commitment to family is so strong that... She is not turned yet, but just willingly sees Edgar, who, mind you, at this point, has blown his brains out three different ways. Very determined. From the side of the head and from under the jaw. He was very him it was very committed to suicide.
01:06:36
Speaker
Yeah, he's looking a little worse for wear, right? So ah she sees her dead-eyed husband, and in that moment of seeing him pine for her and open the window... She falls madly in love with him again, and we get a good, that first, deadite, ah passionate, make-out romance scene. MTV's best kiss, 2026. I mean, they really got after it. Lots saliva slop there.
01:07:00
Speaker
Yeah, she says something like, you haven't kissed me like that in years. you just yeah and well well i'll We'll step on it here. That is actually my favorite line. That's my favorite line of the movie. You haven't kissed me like that in years.
01:07:12
Speaker
as they were As they were macking on each other, I thought to myself, man, that that's a couple whose sex life has not died. And so I was very sad to hear that the this was ah only being dead brought them brought the fire back. the spark This was the spark they needed, hence Evil Dead Burn.
01:07:28
Speaker
It's burning romance, baby. Oh, burning hot, dude. I i was like... how How are you going to make a porn parody of this when you already have some hot shit happening here?
01:07:41
Speaker
Yeah, that was that was a harder to watch one as well. That that that kind of rounds out my list for yeah my cantaloupes. Yeah, there's one other one, but I can save it for my favorite death.
01:07:52
Speaker
Okay. Well, let's ah let's move to best deaths. You want to start with cannon fodder first? yeah um so can' i feel like we probably have the same one maybe maybe not i don't know it's just it's a throwaway death um that it is to set the tone or whatever you want but i had fishing line guy okay so we have different ones yes fishing line guy is great especially because ahead i was just gonna say me too movement we finally see a guy get entangled and I guess not vines, but fishing lines this time, right? That's kind of true to form. Oh, I didn't think about that.
01:08:28
Speaker
And he gets completely ensnared. Yeah, after multiple films of women getting raped or sexually abused. well it's more than But it's more than one woman. It's multiple women.
01:08:39
Speaker
um But it was good to see a guy ah get ensnared here. Yeah, some bondage play going on his it's He is fishing. Jessica is able to somehow manipulate the fishing lines and um then throw them back at him, hook his face.
01:09:00
Speaker
It's unclear the mechanics of what's going on, but all we know is that it looks like it hurts like shit and pulls him. His whole face is being stretched and... ah what eventually he gets pulled into the water and then yeah we get the classic blood in the water right well no he he's still ensnared when his friend comes back and then takes the boat out to save him and he's still alive ish at that point but then there's the boiling water that horribly no no no we're missing a very important part traf okay
01:09:32
Speaker
that His buddy gets on the boat to go save him. He pulls him out of the water and thinks he's got him. He's like, I got you, buddy. I got you. And then we pull back and see that's only half of his body. Yeah, the top half of his torso. Very Jaws-esque. yeah ah And so not an important guy. We don't know his name.
01:09:51
Speaker
um But that was my cannon fodder just as like an ah opportunity for some creative kills and and obviously to connect the last film to this one. i I had the black crematorium worker oh who dies off screen. Yeah, I like that guy. It's kind of a surreal part of the movie because this is where Will presumably breaks free, Deadite Will breaks free of his coffin. But you don't entirely see what happens. You just know he is somehow turned Edgar from grabbing his wrist, I guess, and burning him.
01:10:24
Speaker
And then you just see Edgar's reaction. It's a tight shot on him kind of sitting up against the wall while you just hear screams and see viscera and gore and body parts get chucked around from this poor... I will say, i give the guy some credit, he was still belting out some yells as as lots of blood was being tossed against the wall. like he And lots of him was tossed against the wall. He must have not gotten in his vocal cords till the very end there. No, and he was listening to a banger. I like the music was listening to.
01:10:51
Speaker
um Yeah, pour one out for a crematorium guy. I'm i'm curious. There lot of deaths in this one. What was your favorite? I'm i'm curious what your number one was. I think the hardest to watch for me was Max the dog getting repeatedly stabbed with the fork.
01:11:07
Speaker
That was... um Man, it's... Like you said with the lighting and the colors in this movie, it's a bit dark. You don't see like bright red blood, but because of that, it almost looked...
01:11:18
Speaker
more realistic here, right? Not artistic, but just like, oh this guy's murdering a dog. And that was ah tough to watch. And I think we've brought this up before, but For some weird reason, a dog dying on screen just gets to me a lot more than a human dying.
01:11:32
Speaker
And ah so i I at least bring it out bring it up to give Max a shout out because he he was nothing but a good boy and Edgar turned on him. He would come when whistled.
01:11:43
Speaker
Yeah. Well-trained. Very responsive. And his owner, deadite owner, now turns on him and stabs him to death. Yeah. Pour one out for Max. Now- Should you have- To be clear- see you have someone on the family tree.
01:11:58
Speaker
I just want to make sure this was your fate this was your best death? Well, I mean, what are we saying? It's most notable? i just like For me, when I pick this one, it's like, what's the most interesting or entertaining whatever?
01:12:12
Speaker
Okay, yeah. I think you're right. Sometimes we go with over-the-top kills, and maybe this one's not as over-the-top. What I'm hearing, Travis, this one stuck with you because it was a good old boy, and you're and you're still thinking about it.
01:12:25
Speaker
Um, I did, I did the, the dishwasher door on Thia, Tia's head. as you know, I mean, maybe we're similar in this way. You're picking one that traumatizes you a bit. And as you know, I'm a concussion haver. And so anytime there's face or head trauma, it gets me. And, uh,
01:12:44
Speaker
Boy, did she get some head trauma. Yeah, she probably got a mild concussion right before she died. Yeah, just a mild grade. So yeah, the she and and Joe are fighting in the kitchen. um the At one point, he falls into an open dishwasher room um what door and yeah you know the door is propped open which means it's lateral and he falls on top of it and you can kind of see the door coming off the hinges yep So, yeah, and I thought that was going to be the big item gag. There was like he's getting pushed into like household items. And I was like, OK, whatever, that's kind of tame.
01:13:25
Speaker
And then he is able to get out of that situation. And I think he is about to hurt somebody or do something. Again, there's a lot going on, so I don't remember exactly, but.
01:13:36
Speaker
ah And maybe it's Polly. Maybe it's going he's she's going after Polly. I don't know what it is But he... Along came Polly. Along came Polly down those stairs. ah Just goes to town on her head with that door that he removed from the dishwasher.
01:13:52
Speaker
And does it until she is a bloody pulp of nothing but a bottom jaw. Yep. Yep. And ah it is it is quite gruesome. Looks like a lot of tomato paste. And it was pretty gratuitous. And I got to give Vanacek a shout out for sticking with it.
01:14:10
Speaker
um i Again, everybody every single one except for Evil Dead Rise... It did initially get an NC 17 sorry, it it was not approved. You know, they don't actually slap it on the label until you accept it. But they were basically saying, hey, this cut won't get an R rating the way it is. So they had to cut some stuff out.
01:14:30
Speaker
I don't see. I'm not surprised by that at all based on how this movie was probably the most brutal Evil Dead movie we've seen. Would you agree? Yeah, yeah. I think that's fair. um And speaking of brutal parts, too, you know, there's so many cantaloupe contenders, I completely forgot about the scene where Edgar takes, Dead-Eyed Edgar takes Joe's face and then smashes it into the remains of Taya's now mutated face and lower jaw to to kiss his girlfriend. Ugh.
01:14:59
Speaker
um And so, yeah, a lot of ah lot of mouth trauma here in this film between the dentures, Susan's kiss with Edgar, Joe's kiss with... ah Well, dude, do you know what? I'm not surprised.
01:15:12
Speaker
French kissing, man. yeah French movie. Very sexual. Very. You know how the French are, our baby. Yeah. They got hairy armpits, too. And they love to smoke cigarettes. They do. A lot of jokes.
01:15:24
Speaker
Zuziqui. Viva la revolution. um Yeah, I think yours takes the cake. i was too knee-jerk reaction to just seeing Max die, but that was the most gruesome death.
01:15:37
Speaker
Yeah, well, still, Max was a good boy. Most most gruesome non-death? And maybe this is one I had to dole knives, but the triple self-execution of Edgar blowing his own brains out, which usually for a deadite, that'll do the trick, but not for Edgar. Not this one.
01:15:53
Speaker
No. um All right, I'm excited because I have mixed feelings. Yeah, I've mixed feelings about this whole thing. um The big twist, if you were a wise man and you stayed not just past the mid-credit scene, but in the post-credit scene, you would be treated with a very surprising, Un-Evil-Dead-esque, almost MCU-esque,
01:16:18
Speaker
like connecting cliffhanger, this person will appear in the next installment kind of thing with with Ellie. so um Ellie from Evil Dead Rise. Yeah, and probably of the fan favorite of Deadites, at least of these the the last three films. That's what we were saying. Yeah, Alyssa Sutherland was absolutely, she was the high point for me and in casting of Evil Dead Rise. And so we get to see her again.
01:16:42
Speaker
So I'm going to explain a little bit of detail because, again, i know a lot of people already that have talked about this movie that did not stay the

Post-Film Twists and Character Returns

01:16:48
Speaker
whole time. So I'll just explain it if you haven't read about it. ah the The crematorium manager, that woman, she is ah closing up shop for the day and her daughter is looking at some urns. And she's asking him about what are these urns? And she goes, oh, this is sad. But these are the urns that um families forgot to pick up.
01:17:06
Speaker
And, um you know, we'll keep them here for a bit. But if they don't come by, what they throw them out or something, if she does something with them, I forget. But the girl is very touched and saddened by this. And she's looking at them and she notices one. It says Christopher Leroy, which I have an idea of what what that was referenced to. We can talk about it. And then she sees another one that says what Ellie Baxter.
01:17:26
Speaker
e Um, she hears something. She looks in the mirror. She thinks it's her mom. She looks back again, looks again, and then in the mirror appears Ellie. ah Not only is it in her imagination, thiss not her imagination. She looks behind her and Ellie is actually standing there in all her deadite glory.
01:17:47
Speaker
ah She's six foot tall in real life, so she kind of towers over her and And probably also one of the most shocking moments of this movie. Yes. When's the last time you saw a close up graphic kill of like an eight year old? She, yes she, what is she either bite or rip out her neck? I don't know. She breaks her neck. She breaks her neck, but breaks it, but compound fracture. Like it's, it's bloody, like doesn't just break it internally. Yeah. She snaps her head off.
01:18:17
Speaker
Yes. And then essentially turns to the camera and says, Cameron says, what? Mommy's back. Yep. uh and then cut the black and then it gives her her cast her cast card ah her credit cast credit where it says ellie played by yes something i love the touch of how it put her casting credit right after that scene it's funny you were getting texts from me in real time from the theater today yeah so as the credit started to roll i was like oh lee cronin was a ep on this one i had no idea and you were wise you were a wise man and not saying anything and then like two minutes later i was like oh my god that post-credit scene okay
01:18:53
Speaker
So I've set it up. I've explained it. What I'll give my reaction in a sec. I want to hear yours first. You see that to walk me through what you're thinking. Yeah, I, I don't hate it. i mean, the more I've been stewing on evil dead rise, this is why it's helpful that we've rewatched the franchise. Yeah.
01:19:10
Speaker
I think out of all the characters in the newest three films, she is the one who I enjoyed the most. And I would be willing to watch her reprise her role and come back. I mean, more than, more than Campbell for the franchise, yeah more than Mia, even more than Mia. I don't need a protagonist back. Like,
01:19:28
Speaker
Ellie, I think we brought this up on the last episode, but she has been the scariest deadite to me to date for all six films. She does a great job. But remember, but let's not forget, Mia was not just a protagonist. She was also the main antagonist of the movie, and she has some pretty scary names, too. Yeah, she does. But I just think Alyssa Sutherland...
01:19:46
Speaker
We met she's such a natural beauty, but she's so tall and with those high cheekbones, like her transformation at that is one that is truly scary. And so if they're going to bring someone back and it's not going to be Bruce Campbell, I think Ellie's number two on my list.
01:20:04
Speaker
And so, ah you know, and if they don't bring her back, it was just a fun Easter egg at the end of this film. But it ah it it was an awesome post-credits scene. i I liked it. i enjoyed it.
01:20:16
Speaker
I don't want to normalize post-credit scenes in every movie, but this is one I was not expecting, and I i thoroughly enjoyed it. So Vanacek, not his idea. After he turned in his cut of the movie, apparently Sony said, great.
01:20:29
Speaker
Also, can you go film a quick scene with Liz Sutherland? We want the option to have her return. He dutifully agreed and said, cool, I'll do this. Can I have... free will of how I want to do it They're like yeah, sure. Just, just tease her a bit. Um, yeah, of course when she showed up, I was all smiles and like, yeah yeah, and we'll do our rankings at the end of this episode. I would like to try with you. Um, evil dead rise is really high up there for me. And one of the reasons is because of, uh, Sutherland's performance. Um,
01:21:01
Speaker
it It excites me to see what's going to happen because as we both know, the next movie is coming out in 28 and Evil Dead Wrath is a prequel set in the 70s.
01:21:13
Speaker
And so I don't know if... So it can't be Ellie unless they're jumping around in time a bit. it No, I'm saying this is i'm this is Ellie, I'm assuming. But it's yeah I'm saying Evil Dead Wrath can't be the film with Ellie. So yeah, I want to get the good part out of the way. it's She's a favorite Deadeye. It was awesome to see. And this is very and Evil Dead-like.
01:21:37
Speaker
Here's my question, though. At the end, the last time we saw Ellie, she was what we both call an amalgamation in the last movie. Yes, she had few more Combined with a bunch of other people, including her dead children, other apartment neighbors. And then, by the way, the amalgamation had a name. I didn't know this until after episodes. That thing was called the Marauder, by the way. Oh.
01:21:59
Speaker
So she's the Marauder, and then she is pulverized in a wood chipper. So tell me exactly what was being cremated here. And when they got the remains, how did they know it was Ellie versus all these other children? Like, what? what what How did that work?
01:22:18
Speaker
And that's my first question. And the second question is, like, the rules of deadites have been if you dismember them or pulverize them, they don't come back. And if they do come back, it's not the same visage of... the body they inhabited before.
01:22:30
Speaker
That's a bit more technical, but I am curious what CSI team came up and decided that was, a you know? Yeah, it's a little potpourri of ah who who they were cremating there. her little A little melting pot. It's a little clunky. A lot different people. It's a little clunky in that way. And it is a little fan servicey. And I, I really do like the idea of these things being like standalone efforts that aren't really tied other that don't get bogged down and slowed down by too much lore and connectivity. So I'm a little hesitant. I don't want this to be a routine. Like you said, I don't want this to be a routine thing.
01:23:08
Speaker
I think if they're occasionally going to do callbacks, they should do it. But I really like the loose continuity of stuff here. And I hope that, we don't get backed into a corner of having to like explain stuff and, and do too much nostalgia. So I was mixed, uh, trending towards towards really liking it, but it was a little confusing and I just want to make sure they don't get too crazy with it.
01:23:30
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I think, I think that's right. And like I said, if they don't ultimately bring her back, we just got that one scene, even though.

Audience Reactions and Speculations

01:23:37
Speaker
It's a great scene. You know, it's a little confusing on how she's there in the first place. it was a great scene.
01:23:42
Speaker
yeah Like, you know, little kids' necks get snapped too often. I fair i don't need to see them too often, but it caught me off guard. That's, that's very fair to say. Yeah.
01:23:55
Speaker
I agree. Christopher Leroy. do You want to take a stab at what the hell that name is? No, it sounded like maybe it had significance, but I i did not know. um So it's a reference to ah ah a movie called Meet the Leroy's.
01:24:17
Speaker
Um, and that is a movie that was either written by or directed by one of of the co-writer. And so Bernard, yes, he, Florent Bernard directed a movie called meet the Leroy's and Christopher Leroy is in that movie.
01:24:33
Speaker
Oh, okay. that is That is the connection. So just a personal... You got the Spider for Vanacek, and you got the Meet the Leroys for Florent. That's a comedy drama.
01:24:46
Speaker
So I don't think we'll see Christopher Leroy return. i don't think so either. Some people were thinking it had to do with the Christopher Lee in those old... as as a Dracula in the old Hammer hammer movies.
01:24:58
Speaker
ah But yeah, that's an easy Shyamalan Award for best twist in the movie. easy All right. Where are we Don't go in there. Yes. and And as we've been talking, I know pre-pod, we talked about we were struggling to find one, um surprisingly, but i did I did find one. So I have one ah in the in the in the tank after you.
01:25:18
Speaker
Well, told you mine pre-pod, so I want to hear yours. Mine's not great. It was hearing you talk about setting up the the car scene story or the car scene where ah Edgar ends up bludgeoning Tia.
01:25:32
Speaker
Dude, if her name is not pronounced Tia, we're we' are all over this podcast. I've said Tia a few times. just Just to mix it in? If it's one of those two. Numbers game? I'm committing to Tia. coverage I'm committed to Tia.
01:25:44
Speaker
If I see somebody, no matter how much I love them, repeatedly stab a dog and then like start getting violent with my family members. The last thing I'm doing is getting into a car with them.
01:25:59
Speaker
Like, I think, I think driving the strongest, like he's the, the, he's a built dude. That guy clearly has a program. I'm, I'm either like getting the police involved or restraining him or sleeping pills or something, but you're just asking for trouble putting that guy in the back of a little sedan. yeah I think that was a bad, yes.
01:26:20
Speaker
Yeah, I think that's a great one. Honestly, that's but that's better than what I had. I just had a... It is kind of a rookie move to wear ah sneakers to your husband's funeral. So I can kind of relate to Susan offering offering Alice spare pair shoes there. You know, sir Alice is clearly the victim in a lot of this familial stuff.
01:26:42
Speaker
She could have prepared a speech and wore nicer shoes. Yeah, yeah. I was thinking that too. Like, Will... was a horrible husband, as we learned throughout the film, to her. Yeah, well, at that point... Well, sorry, when you put it that way, maybe didn't deserve a speech. me say, she didn't need to go to the funeral. But if you're going to go, if you're going to go as his wife... Right, if you're going to go, either make a big protest and be like a big fuck you or don't go at all. But the middle ground of, I'll kind of go...
01:27:19
Speaker
It's just going to make it harder for yourself. Nice shoot. I did like the sneaks though. Yeah. we We get a lot of lot of shots of the sneakers. We get those later in the film as well.
01:27:30
Speaker
but she's just Oh, I'm glad you brought this up. um Another nod to Evil Dead 2013 is when Tia is like dragging her feet back to the house after she's had the car seat in her head. There's several shots of her combat boots that she's wearing, like stylistic combat boots. And she's kind of pigeon-toed in the same way that the character in the...
01:27:55
Speaker
beginning of the movie of evil dead 2013 is i figured if it's her or mia later i forget but one of them was walking just like that yeah kind of like broken ankle yeah at least bad sprain yep yep um all right so where does that leave us here best best lines we're in best lines best lines okay well i've stepped on a few years it sounds like i i have one more again i try to limit it to one so maybe i did us a service by getting some yours out of the way or a strategic of you um yeah i'll just i'll you know what trav i'm feeling generous i'll just do one this time okay because you did steal mine uh mid-credit scene we have formerly yes single-legged grandma polly now legless grandma polly because her prosthetic was used against her to bash her in down the stairs and then she uh sawed off her own leg because she was tied up to the
01:28:50
Speaker
banister or to that little elevator situation. yeah to the electric chair. And ah so, yeah, a kind a comical shot of just her leg um when they're doing kind of a ah recap of where everybody's at towards the end of the movie.
01:29:03
Speaker
So we don't see the grandma. And I was like, well, are we going to see her again? And we do mid credits. dragging her ass down the road, a young girl drives by or drives up to her similar to the directorial cut of ah Evil Dead 2013 when Mia is found by a passerby. And she goes, ah oh, my gosh, are you OK, man? Like, can I help you? And she goes, they stole my legs.
01:29:31
Speaker
But yours will do just fine. It cuts like such a great cartoony one liner. Yes. That that was more ah par for the course and what we get with mid credit scenes are just kind of like just funny gags that they like to put at the very end of these Evil Dead movies. Do you know what it reminded me of Trav?
01:29:53
Speaker
What? It was a it was um Bilbo Baggins in Fellowship of the Ring. OK, well, that's my precious that's good. No, it was ah it's that meme.
01:30:05
Speaker
And I don't know the the origin of it, but it's like this old guy and he's bent over near a car. He's like, call an ambulance. And he rises up and he's got a gun. He's like, but not for me. yeah I like that guy.
01:30:20
Speaker
Oh, I like that. I also had a Pauly line and one we've mentioned a few times, but the first time she does when Taya arrives back to the home now as a deadite and Pauly just yells out, she came back for my money. She's hung up on that oh that. That instance, it was only the second time she had referred to it. The first since the dinner scene. And so um got a few chuckles out of our audience and all five of us here in the theater.
01:30:47
Speaker
Um, oh man, I'm gonna break my own rule. I did also really like at dinner, um Edgar's mid turning into deadite. And, uh, Susan mentions how will's looking down on them from above.
01:30:59
Speaker
And he's like, from above, he's down below. mike easily my clear number two line. I love that above.
01:31:10
Speaker
yeah Um, all right. Some dull knives. Yeah. All right, i already already gave my big, ah my soapbox about Ellie's dull knife of how the fuck it she cremated. And I've teased a bit. i i want some some dialogue here with you, Trav.
01:31:29
Speaker
The knife thing, I don't care that it's yeah that it's not the main knife that we see in the other movies. That's fine. You can have a decoy like Holy Grail or Last Crusade. My thing is like, what why are the deadites so fixated on this thing? it It doesn't seem that effective. Okay. So what we learned, and I know the books say different rules for different deadites and the lore kind of is all over the place, but what we've heard is complete dismemberment, fire, in one case, live burial, um and ah polarization is what and does away with these deadites.
01:32:05
Speaker
This seems like the most ineffective way to kill one. It's so small. You have to get so close to it. Yes. Like I, the chances of you not getting harmed while trying to stab a deadite with this thing are very slim. I just don't see all the big hubbub of trying to get this item that is locked away and seemingly nobody can really find it. It is. It was a poor motivation for the entire, like the motivation of all these deadites to get this one little thing seemed like a stretch.
01:32:33
Speaker
So it's funny. I had this on my list as well. And maybe to turn this one knife into a bigger dull knife. So that like you were saying, there's different ways to kill deadites that's been established in canon from the prior film installments.

Unique Rules and Critiques in the Film

01:32:45
Speaker
And this film's just very unique and a lot of those methods don't work. Like Will gets burnt to a crisp. Oh, yeah. But it's still a surviving deadite. Edgar blows his brains out, but he's still living. And so like you and Ty gets like stabbed through the back of the head, which sometimes could kill a deadite and and she's still alive and kicking fine. And so it was very unique. And now they're saying, no, the only way to like really kill them is the knife. And pulverization because jackhammer and dishwasher door helped with that. Mm-hmm. Well, she still stabs Will at the end with the knife.
01:33:18
Speaker
um The jackhammer alone was not enough. Oh, right. You're right. But yeah, we do see Taya die with without one. So that's a good point. um Yeah. and And so they're fixated on this. Like you said, it's not the most effective weapon. You also don't get like a ton of kills with it at the end. No. She stabs Joe she and she stabs Max and she stabs Will. So I guess she gets like 50% of them with the knife. Yeah.
01:33:45
Speaker
Yeah, I'm with you. Is this the first time knife is a dull knife? Yeah, think so. That's why also I wrote down because like, oh, how great is this?
01:33:56
Speaker
We have a true dull knife. Um, but yeah, it was kind of like the catalyst or the motivating force for these deadites and really just throws into question how you kill them. Is this really the most effective way?
01:34:08
Speaker
So I'm with you there. Again, i like the swing. It's the first time that the motivations of these deadites, uh, is something other than we we were just called. Like you you read the incantation and here we came.
01:34:23
Speaker
Um, so that was interesting. I just think they could have a stronger motivation. Yeah. Um, I had some kind of with Susan and Edgar on this one. So Joe inherits his grandpa's beautiful Victorian mansion in the countryside.
01:34:39
Speaker
And that place has just gone to like complete shit. He's indecisive, man. Like literally the first shop when they're entering is of like mold growing on like the rafters and stuff. And this is where they want to spend like the week or the weekend after Wills passed away. Like, yeah I mean, he could have done like something a house cast. They didn't have blue pebble on their side. Trav. Yeah. I mean, just the homes.
01:35:04
Speaker
The home's beat. The home's in rough shape. and if if What's the value? a family member Give me the value. 2025 value. I'm just saying if I had a family member pass away and I was going to host my family to like mourn and spend some time together, I would at least put in like a little effort to the home feeling a little more welcoming. Less than two hundred k Oh, the value of the home. i yeah Real estate is so dependent on where that lot and the land sits. Location, location, location. Exactly. Exactly.
01:35:32
Speaker
um It's clearly near some construction zones. That might be you know hiddened hidden in the valley a little bit. ah nice Near a nice lake with some good fishing, apparently. yeah and ah and And lacks drone laws. Yeah. um All right. that Maybe you can help me with this one. Maybe it's not a dull knife and you can explain it. But What was the point that maybe it was just a gag, but what was the point of Alice reading almost the full incantation and the demon speeding through the air?
01:36:04
Speaker
But she doesn't finish it. She says, fuck this. But the demon keeps going. I guess two questions for you. What was the point of that? And how did the deadites wake up in the first place? Don't you have to read something? Yeah. So I didn't know where to fit it, but this is something worth talking about.
01:36:23
Speaker
So the incantation is never fully read in this film. And like you said, there's no true Necronomicon or Book of the Dead in this film either. So my interpretation is this, again, is just a direct continuation of it.
01:36:35
Speaker
being played to Jessica, who's kind of like Dead Eye number one. You're right. And then spreading it to the family. And to your point, when Alice is reading the words, I actually had this as a winner because I was about to get really pissed off again because brought up in Evil Dead 2013. was like Who reads themselves out loud? Latin, yeah. um But she stops, and I like that. Gives a red her and herring or MacGuffin and got a good laugh out of it. But what comes through the shed is not the evil entity or spirit force, but is Max the dog. So it kind of tricks you on that as well. max Redite Max shows up to to attack Alice. Okay, thank you. That actually clears that up. So it was wrong footing us into thinking it was a spirit. and That's why it keeps going because it's actually the dog.
01:37:20
Speaker
And then this must be like, I don't know how long Jessica was hanging out in the lake, but maybe it could have been a couple of weeks or something. yeah And then she just comes up at the right time. Yeah. yeah So, so she gets, this is all stemming from ah Danny boy with his, with his ah vinyl. Yeah. That wakes him up from that book.
01:37:42
Speaker
ah in LA, I guess. Yep. And evil dead rise. And then Alyssa or Ellie infects a bunch of people. How did Jessica get it?
01:37:53
Speaker
Because the book was still around or something. who would How did Jessica get... She she is in the vault. She must... i think she got some of the blood.
01:38:06
Speaker
Well, actually, i don't know. I think Evil Dead Rises or Evil Dead Rise ends with her getting in her car. in the garage of that condemned apartment building.
01:38:17
Speaker
OK, so Beth didn't kill the Kendarian demon itself. She just killed the just it's she destroyed its physical host. The Kendarian demon is an immortal disembodied spiritual spiritual entity.
01:38:29
Speaker
And therefore it was fused as the Marauder, but it reemerged ah and then possessed Jessica. Okay. And then Jessica then fucks shit up in Evil Dead Bird. All right. like that. but No longer. I recant. I recant. This is a dull knife.
01:38:44
Speaker
Okay. um I still do have. Well, do you have another one? No, that was it for me. ah One's really short. I just got to end it with these final boss CGI things. like i i thought that I thought Will's final form at the end was just cheesy CGI, like kind of sloppy. All right, winners the losers?
01:39:10
Speaker
Oh, yeah, baby. ah got a lot of losers. My only winner was ah Alice not finishing the incantation when she reads, which already said. Yeah. All right. I've already mentioned some of mine too. a Big winner for cigarettes.
01:39:24
Speaker
They're cool again. Big winner for awesome match cuts, specifically a car collision with a dead eight right to a big fat ass. ah Hey, winner, cups, not just goblets or glasses, but cups of wine at dinner. I like it.
01:39:41
Speaker
Let's just skip and like a copy mug yeah skip the formalities, man. We're all grieving. Pour that Merlot in a big cup of Joe. know, I love my wife. I love Anna, but she's very big on stemmed wine glasses. And those are such a pain to clean. Like you can't really put them in the dishwasher. If you hand clean them, I got big hands. It's tough to get in there. Like I, I much prefer stemless or like you said, just go straight to straight to a cup. Humble brag much there?
01:40:08
Speaker
What? That i hand clean wine glasses? With those big hands. with those You know what they sense you know they say about big hands? I mean, i think gloves man have hands I think most men have hands too big to comfortably fit inside of one glass.
01:40:25
Speaker
It's the part in Swingers when he's like, I don't know what to do with these paws. I'm just just, what is he? He's like a big bear. i'm like a big bear. Another winner I had was slamming humans against the wall. I wish I, when I watch this again, I'm going to count how many times somebody just hurls somebody else against what, what, Trav? Is that drywall? Yeah. Yeah.
01:40:48
Speaker
yeah you have that You have Edgar like throw Joe through the floor of the second story and they come crashing down to the first story. Again, house not in good conditions, then maybe that lends itself to it. But this house took some extreme damage here as people were just getting, again, yeeted up against walls, up against floors, just thrown all around the house.
01:41:09
Speaker
Sub one hundred k Maybe. um Well, you know, you brought a good point. If Evil Dead Rise was in l L.A. and this is L.A. adjacent, then this is pretty valuable for that much land. This is over a million dollars just for the land itself.
01:41:23
Speaker
Um, and my last winner was for bush trimmers. Although i am fans of, I'm a fan of the bush. I just want to put it out there. Uh, but the trimmer was a cool tool. Yeah, it was fun.
01:41:36
Speaker
Uh, innovative. I liked it. What bushes or the

Innovative Weaponry and Continuity Questions

01:41:40
Speaker
trimmer? Trimmer. I'm just not used to metal blade on a, on a weed whacker like that. Uh, again don't typically like my bush my bush is trimmed i do think thank you for reiterating as if that wasn't heavy-handed enough the first time you said it wow i got a got a few losers yeah did too um from that lake scene one of my losers is uh Taking a call from the wife when you're on the boys trip, you know, his friend kept being like, man, do you got to take this now? you got to take this now? was like, yeah, I do. And if he hadn't taken that call, imagine how differently that trip could have Yeah. They get a trip together. Jessica would have been like, you know, I respect their healthy male friendship. I'm not going to fuck with these guys. You know, I'm just going to go on my way.
01:42:30
Speaker
Oh man. Another dull knife. We're have to fix this in post. When he's fishing at the beginning of the film, the two buddies, his friend leaves him and he reels in a head.
01:42:42
Speaker
But that wasn't Jessica's head, right? Because her head is still attached to body. I know. And it wasn't the boyfriend's head because that was a male. um that scalped girl's head? Or has there been other victims in the lake?
01:42:57
Speaker
I don't know. I don't have an answer. You bring up a good point. looked like it still had some hair on it. So I don't think it was Skelp Girl. it couldn't be Skelp Girl. It couldn't be Boyfriend. And it's not Jessica unless she can like conjure head. And like reattach her. Yeah. That's a dull knife. That's a solid dull knife. I don't know whose head that was.
01:43:14
Speaker
Yeah. someone needs Someone needs to claim it, just like the urns at the crematorium. um A loser I had was repeating a line as if the audience didn't already hear it.
01:43:28
Speaker
I was going to put as one of my favorite lines as in a foreshadowing moment is when Susan goes, I would die for of all of us to be together again. hmm.
01:43:39
Speaker
And then it's like, that's great. That's subtle. That's nice. Because you know, you know similar to Evil Dead Rise, that something's going to happen to bring them together, but not in the way you think. And then post Kiss, which highlight of the movie. Love that kiss.
01:43:53
Speaker
Edgar's like, hey, remember when you said i would do anything to be together again? and I'm like, fuck, come on I know Vandacek clearly isn't like Americans. if He probably thinks we're dumb. We're not that dumb.
01:44:05
Speaker
We're going to remember what people say. there's There's a lot of repeated lines. Again, with the she came back to steal my money. It was very funny the first time it hit. And they say that a few more times. And then Will keeps saying at the end of the film, like you know they say, till death do. Oh, I know. That was annoying. And intend to keep that. And he has to repeat himself multiple times. No wonder if she killed him. I was like, all right, shut up, man.
01:44:27
Speaker
I agree. Repeated lines. um Another loser I had, you know if anyone needs an outside perspective of Will's character and his integrity.
01:44:40
Speaker
He only had six people show up for his funeral. Like it was immediate family only. Like that's a pretty empty house. So his parents should have probably suspected like he's not the greatest guy in the world, but that can turn out.
01:44:52
Speaker
Yeah, that's tough. That's, I mean, well-deserved. This guy wasn't was a piece of work. But, yeah, loser would be... There's less people there than most funerals have as your pallbearers.
01:45:07
Speaker
Not a good sign. Yeah. Kind of mentioned this earlier, but just wanted to reiterate, loser buckets of blood. no more no Not many buckets of blood here. It's a lot, it's a drier Evil Dead. Aside from saliva, it's like we replace blood with saliva here. Did you have any more?
01:45:27
Speaker
No, I'm looking at my notes. i think that was it. i had I had one more, and it's similar to the lack of buckets of blood. um the loser would be vomit. Usually in these movies and in Sam Raimi movies in general, you get some like pretty iconic vomit scenes, but there's only two moments in there. They're dribbles more than full projectile. Yeah. at Edgar kind of dribbles out those mashed potatoes. Right. I thought we might get some vomit there.
01:45:51
Speaker
And then, ah the dude on the boat in the beginning vomits after seeing his friend, uh, not, uh, only being half the man he used to be. Yeah. And he yeah of your point vomits a bit.
01:46:03
Speaker
But yeah, I was missing some vomit. Maybe maybe all loser for frozen foods that take a pretty big hit. Oh, yeah. honor here just Very disparaging, especially for a parent.
01:46:13
Speaker
A lot of our girls' meals are like, all right, let's heat up some frozen hot dogs, frozen chicken nuggets. They're still good. I bet you if I have a fresh hot dog that I'm boiling or a frozen hot dog that I'm boiling, you would not be able to tell the difference.
01:46:29
Speaker
Not that that's the finest cuisine, but ah I can relate to Alice not being able to tell the difference there. I'll take you up on that. let's look Next time we do a real-life pod. Okay, I'll give you two hot dogs and you have to pick which one came out of the freezer. No, how many do they have in weapons? Is it seven? Seven, I think. Give me that many. I love that. I love that scene.
01:46:51
Speaker
Yeah, Stouffer's, Healthy Choice, ah Amy's, Taken Strays. Those those served me well um throughout my life and will continue to. So I'm not hating unfrozen meals at all here. It's also like a nightclub bar. Like are people really going there for the cuisine?
01:47:11
Speaker
Susan makes such a big point of like, you can't serve frozen food there. I'm like, man, if it's like 2 a.m. and I'm at a bar, like the last thing I'm thinking about I'm on my third bottle of bottle service is like, oh man, I hope these appetizers come straight out of the freezer.
01:47:26
Speaker
Doesn't taste like it was an an air fryer. Yeah. um By the way, can i can i just say, can we can we both give our favorite frozen food

Personal Favorites and Rankings in the Franchise

01:47:38
Speaker
meal?
01:47:38
Speaker
Because- It's a clear winner for me. Okay. Amy's cheese enchilada. It is. there's just nothing better, dude. I've had it since I was a kid and I, even when I'm on a budget and I'm walking through the grocery aisle and you know, you, you shot, you got to shop the perimeter when you're trying to save money and eat healthy.
01:48:00
Speaker
But if I, if I'm in the frozen meal section and I see Amy's cheese, have you had that before? I have not. I'll have to try it. Oh, Trav. love Mexican. Dude, you got to give it a try. Mine would probably be the DiGiorno Supreme Pizza. Ooh.
01:48:17
Speaker
That's kind of king of frozen pizzas for me. used to get a lot of those back in the day. Ranch or just un-under-all? I don't dip my pizza in ranch. I think they- You're a gentleman. Sometimes, yeah, it's a disservice to the food, right? If you need a condiment dipping sauce, I think that's good enough to merit no sauce.
01:48:33
Speaker
I respect that. um All right. ah Let's do Scream King, Scream Queen, and then we need to finish with ranking old films in the franchise. I love it. i I struggle with this. I kind of want you to lead because I have a couple in between, but I could be convinced.
01:48:52
Speaker
Yeah. I am.
01:48:56
Speaker
I'm mad you you're making me lead. Were you also struggling? I know who. I can tell you who I was between. Sure, don't tell me that.
01:49:07
Speaker
Edgar, Ellie, or Polly? Edgar because he his face stuck with me. Ellie because it's almost like a makeup award for the last one, and it was just so exciting to see her. And then Polly because she just brought comic relief and then a ah killer last mid-credits moment. but i Yeah, I agree.
01:49:27
Speaker
i I think I would scrape Edgar, although I agree with everything you're saying. And it's a toss up for me, but exactly what you said. i i feel prone to give this to Ellie because i was I think she was our runner up and a close runner up. And still dead ride and again, like i she makes a fantastic Deadite. So even though she had to do a lot, which is a little in terms of screen time, um I like that.
01:49:53
Speaker
all right i like that I thought you would poo-poo that because she's literally in there for 30 seconds. but ah Cool. Ellie, I like it. Alyssa Sutherland. There you go. um okay no How do you want to do this how do you want to do this and in the way that's the most interesting for the viewer? i'm I'm just going to rip the band-aid off and tell you exactly where I'm at.
01:50:14
Speaker
For me, there's one film that stands above the other five, and then the other five kind of a grab bag. How about this? i think we I think we both know Evil Dead 2 is the best. We'll let's just put that out of the way. That's what I wanted to get. Exactly. That's what wanted get out of the way i think Evil Dead 2 is still the best film in the franchise. All right. Easily. That's our consensus number one, and then we'll probably differ for the remaining five.
01:50:35
Speaker
um I'll go first. Hot take. I have Army of Darkness at six. I... Really love the movie. Again, like you said, in the beginning of the episode, this franchise doesn't miss.
01:50:52
Speaker
At this point, when I'm thinking of rewatch ability and what I want out of an Evil Dead movie. It's the one that I would probably reach for the least frequently, but I would still reach for it in the near future.
01:51:06
Speaker
But that's my number six. Yeah, i I think for mine is actually the original, The Evil Dead. Okay, that's fair. I think you could introduce people to the franchise by just starting Evil Dead 2.
01:51:19
Speaker
I don't think you need to watch The Evil Dead. um Obviously, like... it it matters so much more for the great lengths they went to to make that film and the production story behind it. Yes. But just like focused on the film itself, I think it's a little lower. Because i Army at Darkness is just so damn funny. like It is funny. That seems like the one where if it's on TV, I'm more apt to to tune in for bits of it. My list could change tomorrow, but that's just how I feel right now. my And Evil Dead 1 is a little higher for me, and I'll i'll share it when I get there.

ah I think... it's it it begins difficult for me to separate the production story with the film itself to a point where like I find myself enjoying it more and more each time I watch it because of how scrappy and resourceful it is so yeah just to add on to what you said like if you're not thinking about all that the productions like but once you do know about it and see it in action it's kind of hard not to love so yeah um All right. My number five is Evil Dead Burn.
01:52:19
Speaker
um Again, really good. Really good movie. I just like the other four more. I mean, we've we've already talked about- Last criticism I've level. This is the longest film the franchise by far. is it? 111 minutes. Yeah. Everything else was like a tight 85 or at least Evil Dead Rise. I think it was still under 100. Yeah. Let me verify that real quick. Yeah.
01:52:38
Speaker
i would i felt I felt the length here. It overstayed its welcome a bit. The third act was probably its weakest. Or not the third act, the whole third act. like the The final the the big bad boss fight I could have done without. Even Evil Dead Rise was only 96 minutes. yeah the The will piece at the end was just elongated. and And like you said, a CGI monster just wasn't quite doing it for me. Yeah.
01:53:02
Speaker
um All right, yeah, I'll keep this one quick because I just talked about it but my number four is Evil Dead 1981, the original, um scrappy. it's they're They're swinging.
01:53:14
Speaker
They're 20-year-olds in the woods, and they they created history, so number four. ah Mine's going to be Fetty Alvarez's 2013 Evil dead Nice.
01:53:27
Speaker
What sticks out to you? I like it again. Again, these are all so close, right? So it's not a clear delineation. And like you said, my list on the bottom five, like I said, at the top of the pod, like they're all getting hits on all these films. These are all good movies. Um, I can't imagine on the episode, but like the, the drug addict, the drug addiction, like something kind of charged through that didn't quite get to me as much. Um,
01:53:51
Speaker
I don't know. i I just remember not being that impressed the first time I saw that movie in theaters, and that's just kind of stayed with me even upon rewatch. What are the things you like about it?
01:54:04
Speaker
um i I mean, i do really like, I think I see more of the comedy upon going back to rewatch it, like you said, with um I forget the girlfriend's name, her arm kind of hanging by a thread then falling off. And yeah. so you know you you And I had not watched the original films before that was the first evil death movie i ever watched. I'm watching the originals and then seeing everything. It pays, it does a really good job of paying homage to the original films. And and I like it more because of that upon rewatch.
01:54:32
Speaker
Okay. Probably the best out of the ah three newer films for paying homage. I mean, again, it's set at a cabin very similarly to... um Yeah, I mean, some people still call it like a remake for that reason. no um All right. My number three is... And this was close. My... Well, I guess... Yeah. be my We can just say they're both because... ah by elimination, but my number three is Evil Dead Rise. um For a while, it was my favorite Evil Dead, and maybe that'll happen again. um
01:55:07
Speaker
It's a close battle between this and Evil Dead 2013 for me. For number two, um Yeah, what else was I to say? I mean, the setting's great. Alyssa Sutherland as as um Ellie is just pitch perfect. And it's just a different swing. And i felt I think that one is the one I care most about the characters. I think that's the best characterization in any of the movies. And that's probably a big reason why it's top five. I'd agree. i had Evil Dead Rise as my number three as well. I think it's the best of the newer Evil Dead films. Love what they do in the game department building setting. Love Alyssa Sutherland.
01:55:40
Speaker
I agree the characters you you're more vested in them than I think the other films. All right. delete cronin So your number two is Army and mine is 2013. Tell me about Army. I want to hear more about the Army from you. I think Army of Darkness is just so fucking funny. Like, like the the main reason I like Evil Dead 2 is just Bruce Campbell, like putting that film on his shoulders and they just double down on that in Army of Darkness. So, yeah you know, the only caveat is it's the least horror, if you even want to call it horror. I think it still gets a horror tag like a letterbox, but that's a very, very loose. It's a technicality. Yes. Yes.
01:56:16
Speaker
But that's just taking all the best parts of Evil Dead 2 and being like, let's just let Bruce Campbell do his thing. It is truly the the Bruce Campbell show. Very entertaining. It's such an iconic like ah ah poster for the film too.
01:56:32
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, says lot. that that carries a ton of weight with what I like. No, it sticks out, though. I mean, when I think of it, I think of that poster. It's like it's just so extreme. And you've got the fantasy elements to it. Yeah. That's what i'm saying. like I say right now it's the sixth, but that could be in the top three for me tomorrow. It just depends on what my mood is. um Evil at the 2013 this was interesting. This was this used to be my sixth favorite and it shot up in this rewatch. I don't know what got me at it.
01:57:02
Speaker
I think I appreciated it more. I was surprised by how much I liked it. It's it's ah dedication to the lore and it's doing something different but sticking with the overall template.
01:57:15
Speaker
And again, Jane Levy as Mia as do don't, you know, doing triple duty as protagonist antagonist and ah victim. just And i mean, the climax goes a long way. I mean, what a way to end a movie.
01:57:28
Speaker
um yeah Yeah, Evil Dead 2 will forever, i think, be the clear. and It's like a masterpiece of like bonkers horror comedy. I mean, what else is there to say about it? right All right. Well, I think that does it for us this week. Again, we'll have a pullout there on social media, which by the time you're listening to this, maybe we'll leave it open for another day or two, but we'll have to make a decision here by early this coming week on which a Sam Neill movie we want to cover for next weekend.
01:57:56
Speaker
And we'll- Possession in the Mouth of Madness or Event Horizon. Yes, correct. um And yeah, we're looking forward to covering one of those and then we'll get back to, I'm sure more recent or 2026 movies. there's There's a few that we missed in our hiatus beginning of the year that we're going to try to get back to to cover.
01:58:19
Speaker
