Speaker: Fresh ESPN is just out here firing people, dude.
Speaker: Not just a couple, like a few.
Speaker: And while ESPN is out here firing people, hockey signings, the off-season is looking kind of crazy.
Speaker: We're going to talk about that.
Speaker: Crazy.
Speaker: Hopes and dreams were crushed over the last week that we had like things that we had predicted.
Speaker: And Damian Lillard, you know, we said he's going to Miami, but is he fresh?
Speaker: Is he?
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: He might.
Speaker: He might not.
Speaker: Rumors out there.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: But kicking it off, you know, it was the 4th of July this week fresh, right?
Speaker: Like, you know, obviously like one of the biggest American holidays, if not the biggest.
Speaker: And what I was going to ask you as I was just, you know, hanging out at home on the 4th, what do you think the best baseball movie is?
Speaker: Like, what's your favorite?
Speaker: Because I was watching some on the 4th, you know, because baseball, America and stuff like that.
Speaker: And I'm curious as to what your favorite baseball movie is.
Speaker: That's a tough one.
Speaker: Without...
Speaker: Any preparations?
Speaker: I'm going off the top of my head.
Speaker: I mean, the two that, again, I could probably think into this further and come up with a different answer, but
Speaker: The Sandlot and Feel the Dreams are the two.
Speaker: No way.
Speaker: That's the two I was going to say.
Speaker: I'm not even kidding right now.
Speaker: That's awesome.
Speaker: I was going to say I have my top three.
Speaker: Sandlot, Feel the Dreams, and then there's this movie with Kevin Costner in it called For a Love of the Game.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: He's a Detroit Tiger in that movie, and I love it because I'm a big Tigers fan.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: Bull Durham was a good movie, too.
Speaker: Yeah, and I live right by that team.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So we got two for two, though.
Speaker: Great minds think alike, dude.
Speaker: That's so funny.
Speaker: I was actually coming into this because I know that you and I have an age gap.
Speaker: I was like, is he even going to like the Sandlot?
Speaker: Like, I like the Sandlot.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: It's a classic.
Speaker: You crazy?
Speaker: That's great.
Speaker: I was just making sure, dude.

Speaker: I just was making sure that wasn't some generational gap there, you know, like, what's the Sandlot?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And I named some movie from, like, 1847.
Speaker: It's like a baseball play.
Speaker: It was a silent movie.

Speaker: Charlie Chaplin and whatever.
Speaker: I'm glad I answered that right so we could keep the podcast going on because it seemed like that was an important question, so.
Speaker: That's almost like a re-job interview.
Speaker: And I feel like I passed, so I feel good about that.
Speaker: Yeah, no, we're good.
Speaker: We can move on to people that aren't so good.
Speaker: Speaking of job interviews, yeah, go ahead.
Speaker: There's a list of people that are going to need to do something.
Speaker: There's a list of people that are going to need some job interviews, maybe.
Speaker: I don't know what you do when you're an analyst or a network personality at that level.
Speaker: But ESPN Fresh laid off some bigger, what I would call bigger names like Jalen Rose and a handful of other people.
Speaker: It's like 20 people.
Speaker: It's like 20.
Speaker: Yeah, it's crazy.
Speaker: And some people may know certain ones from certain sports.
Speaker: But you're talking Steve Young.
Speaker: You know, legendary quarterback, Rob Ninkovich, you know, won Super Bowls with the Patriots.
Speaker: There's a ton of names in there.
Speaker: Keyshawn Johnson, big star football player.
Speaker: Jeff Van Gundy, pretty high-profile NBA, former NBA coach.
Speaker: Max Kellerman's been around, like, almost all my life, you know.
Speaker: This guy, he's kind of like a baby Skip Bayless.
Speaker: He just tries to be a pain in the ass.
Speaker: But, you know, he's all right.
Speaker: Chris Chelios.
Speaker: super famous hockey player.
Speaker: So, I mean, Neil Everett, dude, has been around forever.
Speaker: And Susie Colbert.
Speaker: So, a lot of big names, dude.
Speaker: A lot of big names.
Speaker: I mean, how much do you think they're saving?
Speaker: A billion dollars or something on these names?
Speaker: I don't know how much they... I'm curious if that's going to come out because I'm like, how much could they be saving from this?
Speaker: Because, like, there's some names on there that I'm like, oh, wow.
Speaker: Like, I didn't expect... I really didn't expect the Jalen Rose thing.
Speaker: Yeah, he's good.
Speaker: If I'm being honest.
Speaker: Todd McShay does all their draft stuff.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: He's huge.
Speaker: So what I think is crazy to see is that all of college game day was safe.
Speaker: But that also brings up one of the names associated with college game day.
Speaker: Pat Maxey.
Speaker: I knew her name.
Speaker: Yeah, Pat Maxey.
Speaker: Who just got a huge deal.
Speaker: With ESPN, can you describe that deal fresh?
Speaker: Because I feel like you remember it better than I do.
Speaker: But it was an insane amount of money.
Speaker: I didn't see the numbers.
Speaker: And I know part of the deal was that they would get to keep streaming the game on YouTube, and that show would also be aired on ESPN, so you could pick which one you want to watch it on.
Speaker: Now, yeah, that's the future of how we're going to watch stuff.
Speaker: I mean, that's part of why we're getting into this podcast thing.
Speaker: I mean, mainly because we talk about this stuff anyway, so we figured we might as well press record.
Speaker: But, you know, it's a cool space to be getting into, and he's obviously at the top of that.
Speaker: I don't know, man.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I don't think he could be worth that much that they had to fire.
Speaker: Guess.
Speaker: Guess how much I just looked up.
Speaker: Well, just just guess.
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: One hundred and fifty million.
Speaker: Oh, no, that's a little high.
Speaker: Eight eighty five million.
Speaker: OK.
Speaker: For just him, though, or for.
Speaker: I guess the show, the Pat McAfee show is like eighty five million.
Speaker: for that's the deal that's it i didn't look into the okay because i i was thinking maybe more years yeah no that was good typing on the fly um no i was thinking maybe more years like maybe they really wanted to lock him up because he is like the biggest name in sports right now you know sports coverage especially football so i'm like maybe if they sign him for 10 years it could be 150 million so who knows but um
Speaker: Yeah, it's great.
Speaker: I mean, you have to think some of these guys, you know, Neil Everett and Susie Colbert and Steve Young, Matt Hasselbeck.
Speaker: These are a lot of these guys, not Susie or Neil, but a lot of these other players were star players.
Speaker: That's why they're signed to ESPN.
Speaker: Jalen Rose, Keyshawn Johnson, Steve Young, Rob Ninkovich, you know, Lofonzo Ellis.
Speaker: So, yeah.
Speaker: It's crazy, man.
Speaker: It's got to be looking at hundreds of millions of dollars that they shaved off the books.
Speaker: So I guess there's a reason for it.
Speaker: And then here's my other question.
Speaker: Are they going to sign Shannon Sharp, who just left Undisputed with Skip Bayless, which was on Fox.
Speaker: Now he's a free agent, so to speak, to put it in sports.
Speaker: You know, does he get $85 million also?
Speaker: Can you imagine the amount of hate he's going to get if it breaks, like, within, I would say, in the next month or two?
Speaker: Yeah, I hope they wait for his sake.
Speaker: Have an exclusive contract?
Speaker: Yeah, he's going to get a lot of hate, if that is true.
Speaker: You know, like, I don't know if there's any validity to that.
Speaker: Well, he's going to do something, everyone thinks.
Speaker: Yeah, but maybe the 20 other people that got laid off at ESPN, maybe he's like, oh, let's do our own thing.
Speaker: Yeah, I mean, he's got a lot of names to pick from there.
Speaker: You know, him and Steve Young talking football would be pretty crazy.
Speaker: I mean, they're both Hall of Fame caliber guys.
Speaker: So who knows?
Speaker: Who knows what this does to the game?
Speaker: But it is interesting, dude.
Speaker: So time will tell.
Speaker: I think there's a lot of talented people out there, though, that have pretty damn good resumes.
Speaker: So we'll see what they do.
Speaker: Fox is always paying boatloads of money to these guys.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Well, they can always come and be on the Fresh Cakes podcast.
Speaker: We'll pay you absolutely nothing.
Speaker: But we'll smile.
Speaker: We have very wonderful smiles.
Speaker: We'll be very gracious.
Speaker: Yeah, we'll say thank you and please and things like that.
Speaker: Yeah, exactly.

Speaker: We know we're not paying you, but we can just.
Speaker: So speaking of paying, you know who got paid?
Speaker: Bertuzzi.
Speaker: Bertuzzi.
Speaker: I was going to say he didn't get paid.
Speaker: The Bruins.
Speaker: Gosh darn Bruins.
Speaker: I looked into this a little more.
Speaker: They had like, what was it?
Speaker: It was something crazy, like $5 million to fill eight spots or some craziness like that.
Speaker: So they weren't, they were just screwed, you know, but that, so that is definitely why they traded Taylor Hall.
Speaker: I still think they could have re-signed Bertuzzi because they're going to have to go get a top six guy somewhere that's going to be about $5 million.
Speaker: You added Taylor Harrell's salary dump.
Speaker: You didn't re-sign Orloff because who signed Orloff?
Speaker: The Canes.
Speaker: Yeah, the Canes.
Speaker: Very upsetting.
Speaker: A lot of tension for the podcast.
Speaker: He goes from one team to the other team.
Speaker: I love Orloff.
Speaker: Dude, he came onto the Bruins and just started...
Speaker: Skoldegor's first night as a Bruin, didn't he?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I think it was like four out of his first five games he scored goals.
Speaker: As a defenseman.
Speaker: As a defenseman.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And he's a good defenseman, too, and a puck mover.
Speaker: But Bertuzzi, I don't know who I'm more upset about.
Speaker: Probably Bertuzzi, but I really like Orleff.
Speaker: I really liked Orleff.
Speaker: So I don't know.
Speaker: I'm pissed about them both.
Speaker: But we didn't have the money.
Speaker: So what do the Bruins do?
Speaker: Let's bring in Milan Lucic.
Speaker: who is a former Bruin and a beloved former Bruin.
Speaker: But, I mean, it doesn't really replace the, like, the problem with Bergeron and Krejci was their age, right?
Speaker: And not during the regular season, obviously, but once you get into that intense playoffs after having played a regular season, what do you have left in the tank at that age, right?
Speaker: And I think we both saw not much.
Speaker: Yeah, but I mean, you know who the Bruins did resign was Pasta.
Speaker: So, I mean, it seems like they're going to start building around him.
Speaker: And so if nothing else, you hold on to probably the guy that's going to make the most impact in the organization or what's going to make the most impact in the organization in the next five years.
Speaker: Yeah, and it's not like our team becomes terrible, but it lost a lot of pieces.
Speaker: I mean, we're talking probably Bergeron and Krejci.
Speaker: No one expects them to come back.
Speaker: They're probably going to both retire.
Speaker: And then you're talking Bertuzzi and Orleff on top of that, who, yes, were mid-season acquisitions.
Speaker: They weren't part of the whole, the entire thing, but they were good acquisitions.
Speaker: Yeah, they were.
Speaker: I remember how...
Speaker: upset I was when you all got Bertuzzi like in the trades like when trades were happening because I feel like we got really nothing and the guys you know that we did trade for like Gossespierre got signed by I think the Red Wings I don't know what Poglia Yarve is doing but if the Canes sign him I'm going to go on another rant about he's the slowman right he's the guy like he's slow he skates all goofy and he like wears his visor on his forehead oh yeah okay
Speaker: And he just – he didn't show up in the playoffs.
Speaker: I think he was like a healthy scratch.
Speaker: You know what I mean?
Speaker: They were like, dude, you can't even dress for the game.
Speaker: That's how much you don't trust you out there.
Speaker: Well, look, we got some minor leaguers back for Taylor Hall.
Speaker: So that's, you know, amazing.
Speaker: Like what are we going to do with that?
Speaker: I think you guys – and I know we don't want to go too long on this, but I think you guys are in a much better situation than us for next season.
Speaker: I would like –
Speaker: different leagues at this point.
Speaker: But we'll see.
Speaker: I don't think the Bruins are done either.
Speaker: So we'll see what happens.
Speaker: Well, the Bruins aren't done.
Speaker: And you know who lost might not be done.
Speaker: Celtics.
Speaker: Are they just getting started?
Speaker: Might.
Speaker: Yeah, we'll see.
Speaker: So we just, like right before we're recording this, traded Grant Williams to Dallas.
Speaker: And Grant Williams is a bench player, but he's a good bench player.
Speaker: And he's been for some years for us now.
Speaker: Good shooter, got some size, good defender.
Speaker: So Dallas signed him for four years, $54 million.
Speaker: We got like three second-round picks, which, I don't know, second-round picks in basketball, not always amazing, but you do find stars in the second round.
Speaker: So that's maybe a salary dump to sign, maybe.
Speaker: Here's what would have to happen for us to get Dame Lillard, since you already brought this up.
Speaker: You're going to trade Jalen Brown for him, Batman.
Speaker: Batman after they already traded Greenman?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Marcus Smart.
Speaker: What did they trade Marcus Smart for again?
Speaker: Przingis.
Speaker: That's right.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: So then they have to trade Batman.
Speaker: Well, because Dame Lillard is a superstar, you know, so you got to give him a star and they'd probably need to give him
Speaker: Someone else.
Speaker: I don't know if it's like Peyton Pritchard.
Speaker: He goes back to Oregon or like whatever.
Speaker: But they're going to be trading.
Speaker: I thought he was a free agent.
Speaker: Or no, he requested a trade.
Speaker: He requested a free agent.
Speaker: So he doesn't have a whole lot of negotiating powers.
Speaker: Portland.
Speaker: OK, that's right.
Speaker: So it's not like I don't see it as a probable right now, but it is getting a lot of buzz because of Jalen Brown needs to resign.
Speaker: We could offer him, and him and Tatum just are kind of the same guy.
Speaker: They're a little bit different.
Speaker: I think Brown's more explosive.
Speaker: Tatum is probably like a better finished overall player, but Brown's really good.
Speaker: But they're somewhat similar size.
Speaker: Neither of them's a guard.
Speaker: They play like the same position, basically.
Speaker: So it's like I wouldn't mind having, if it's Damian Lillard and he was happy to be on the Celtics, I wouldn't mind that, Jay.
Speaker: But I really like Jalen Brown.
Speaker: Batman, dude.
Speaker: It might evolve between this episode or next episode.
Speaker: So what percent chance do you say that has of happening?
Speaker: Just putting you on the spot.
Speaker: 10%.
Speaker: You think a 10% chance of him going to the Celtics?
Speaker: It would be a big trade.
Speaker: And he wants to go to the Heat.
Speaker: He's pretty much said he wants to go to the Heat.
Speaker: So the other thing I saw today was that Jason Tatum was basically recruiting Damian Lillard, which may be just a rumor.
Speaker: That's not like a fact or anything.
Speaker: Because A, that's kind of fucked up if Jalen Brown's going to beat your teammate.
Speaker: You know what I mean?
Speaker: And you're like, get this guy out of here.
Speaker: Give us Dame.
Speaker: But I do think as a player fit, Dame with either of them, Dame with Jalen Brown or Dame with Tatum makes more sense than Tatum and Brown together.
Speaker: So we'll see, man.
Speaker: What do you think?
Speaker: I think that I would rather see him on the Celtics in the heat.
Speaker: Because you know why?
Speaker: It's almost like a selfish reason on both sides.
Speaker: Like, I want that for you for the Celtics.
Speaker: I also want to see Tyler Hero, who was like a Kentucky boy, stay with Bam Adebayo.
Speaker: He was also Kentucky.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: I feel like they have a lot more potential at the Heat, and I don't really want to see them broken up because I like to see Kentucky players succeed.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So, I mean, the 10%...
Speaker: I agree with you on that.
Speaker: And they are good together.
Speaker: They eat as like an underdog type of team.
Speaker: They play that way, but they play tough.
Speaker: So I hate them, but I don't, you know, because of you, I have to have some Kentucky, you know.
Speaker: And then Portland's in a crazy rebuild if they do that.
Speaker: If I'm Portland, I'd rather have, I mean, yeah, so maybe 15%.
Speaker: I'd rather have Jalen Brown.
Speaker: then no offense to Tyler Hero, but he's not an all-star like Jalen Brown is.
Speaker: So we'll see, man.
Speaker: I would take Dame.
Speaker: Give us a guard, shooter, someone who can actually hit a clutch shot.
Speaker: And that's all I have to say about that, man.
