And I'm still stuck on how you can't quite get Bad Romance to scan as Bad Beliefs, because even though belief is two syllables like romance, you have to sing it like belief, and that just doesn't work. Now, he admits at this stage there might be another explanation that is outside of epistemology, which is that there might be a political reason that people change their beliefs in this way. But he's going to use these examples in support of his theory about how we outsource beliefs and outsource belief production to go, look, these people are sincere in their beliefs. And Neil goes, look, this is a great example.

Truth-Seeking Senses and Evolution

So he wants to talk here about how belief is shallow, that actually most of our beliefs are very shallow copies of how the world actually is. So he says, the shallowness of belief is an instance of a more general phenomenon, the adaptive outsourcing of cognition to the world.

I just think the epistemic onto gap means we need to be very cautious about making claims, about having knowledge about the world. I like to leave that to one side because I have no reason to think my beliefs are true.

He loves his cicades and we're going to see it here because it says, a central piece of evidence that our visual representations are extended consists in their shallowness where representation is shallow if it is easily uprooted.

But actually, it turns out our eyes are always twitching. If you're taking a large scene, your eye is twitching.

There's the various, the optical illusions where you have sort of arrow-type shapes and then straight lines drawn across them, and the lines appear to be bent, and that's because essentially your brain is predicting the future. It sees the arrow and thinks, okay, it's moving in that direction, so assumes the line will be going in that direction, even though it's not. There's all sorts of ways.

So, you know, certainly there are a whole lot of claims that have no novelty whatsoever. They've been brought up and debunked many times before, a long time in the past. So in those cases that year, there's perhaps much less of a need to rebut them than a brand new challenge to something.

He goes to, he says, well, can we go look at a simpler example? How about Holocaust denial? That is apparently is Cassin's preferred example for talking about these things.

And she uses evidence of the increasing incidence of the phrase death recorded next to the names of people who had been convicted of sodomy. You could argue that, given that that seems to be a claim that she was leaning on quite hard, you might want to do a bit more research.
